This anthology of short stories, and the occasional story poem, is vintage Neil Gaiman: quirky, sometimes very funny, often dark and disturbing. Most have been published before, but are hard to find elsewhere and cover all of Gaiman's writing life. As Gaiman says in his introduction, "most of the stories in this book are about love in some form or another," but not requited love. The stories in Smoke and Mirrors touch on all of Gaiman's themes: sex, death, dreams, and the end of the world. From "Chivalry," about the Holy Grail and where it finally ended up, to "Troll Bridge," a very adult version of "The Three Billy Goats Gruff"; from "Bay Wolf," a story poem that melds Beowulf and Baywatch, with interesting results, to "Murder Mysteries," which is about a murder, but also about angels, God's will, and Evil, these stories leave lasting impressions. Fans of Ray Bradbury's short stories and of Gaiman's other works will enjoy this collection. --Nona Vero
Book Description
In the deft hands of
Neil Gaiman, magic is no mere illusion ... and anything is possible. In this, Gaiman's first book of short stories, his imagination and supreme artistry transform a mundane world into a place of terrible wonders -- a place where an old woman can purchase the Holy Grail at a thrift store, where assassins advertise their services in the Yellow Pages under "Pest Control," and where a frightened young boy must barter for his life with a mean-spirited troll living beneath a bridge by the railroad tracks. Explore a new reality -- obscured by smoke and darkness, yet brilliantly tangible -- in this extraordinary collection of short works by a master prestidigitator. It will dazzle your senses, touch your heart, and haunt your dreams.

GAIMAN'S SHORT STORIES: A MODERN EDGAR A. POE.......2007-08-10
I first met Gaiman's storytelling craft and writting style a long time ago through his Sandman comics. To that work I give five-plus stars.
After that I read some of his novels. His books Neverwhere, American Gods and Good Omens were good, but to my opinion not superb. I gave them 3 stars. I thought his comics were better than his novels. And then I decided to try his short stories.
Something told me that those would be better.
I bought Smoke & Mirrors (along with Fragile Things), and it took around one week for delivery. I read Smoke & Mirrors in less time that it took to be delivered. It is not that I am such a fast reader or Amazon too slow delivering (at leas not always), but I just wanted to read more stories. I think that his style is suited better for short stories than for long novels. Even though Gaiman is a strange mix of Stephen King and Edgar A. Poe (within an Allan Moore), he is more a Poe. His short stories are very good. and now I'm reading Fragile Things.
I still think of Gaiman as an excellent comic writter, thats the reason I only give 5 stars to his comics and stick to 4 for his short stories.
My favorite stories were the last tale in the book (Snow, Glass, Apples), and also the tales: Murder Mysteries, Change, Nicholas was... (very very very short story but equally good), Babycakes and a story that is hidden in the introduction called Wedding Gift (don't miss reading the introduction!!!).
I also liked his poem White Road. Pretty "upsettling", as Humpty Dumpty would have said.
Enjoy
Classic Gaiman.......2007-04-27
I'd read a couple of the stories in this collection before (notably "We Can Get Them for You Wholesale," and "Snow, Glass, Apples") and I've been a fan of his longer fiction and graphic novels for some time, but this was the first time I'd really immersed myself in his short stories. It was definitely an experience.
What struck me the most is how different most of these stories are. In his (excellent) introduction, Gaiman himself talks about specific influences for several of the stories and poems, and about different "voices" he's written them in. The difference really is astounding. "Chivalry" is nothing like "Murder Mysteries," which is nothing like "When We Went to See the End of the World..." Of course, some stories are more similar than others, but his range is pretty incredible. The only thing the works share is that they're pretty darn good.
Of course, in any collection, there are going to be high points and low points. The thing with Smoke and Mirrors is that even the low points are good. A few of the poems, and maybe one or two of the stories weren't exactly my cup of tea, they were well done. And the reason I gave this book five stars is that the stories that were my cup of tea were so good that I didn't mind it when or two missed the mark.
Make sure you do more than skim the introduction. He's buried a story in there that's well worth reading, and I found myself skipping back to the introduction after each story, to get a little more perspective on what I'd read.
a definite keeper.......2007-04-22
One of my favorite books of all time. If it were possible to give more than 5 stars, I would. I was introduced to this book when a friend of mine had me read one of the stories in this book. It was a dark, and I must admit, very disturbing retelling of the fairy tale Snow White. After reading it, I was somewhat perturbed, but I was also hooked. I looked high and low for a copy of the book, and when I finally came across one, I was not disappointed. Gaiman's stories are both haunting and compelling, and always entertaining. This is a book I'll read over and over... and over again.
A treasure trove.......2007-02-12
I loved American Gods. I loved Good Omens. I loved the Sandman comics (I only read the first few) and Neverwhere. This book of short stories felt like peeking inside Gaiman's head as he wrote all of these. Some of the stories seem like they inspired or were inspired by his other books, others seem totally out of left field but undeniably Gaiman. I read the book straight through in a day and now go back for my favorites.
Five for most of the stories.......2006-12-26
Neil Gaiman is kinda my hero. This collection of his short stories is amazing. Several times after reading one of the stories in this collection, I shivered with pleasure at how it seemed to be the perfect ending that pulled it all together.
I don't want to ruin any of the stories with too much summary, but they are generally pretty creepy and fantastical. Just don't expect happy endings. The introduction was actually worth reading and interest (and contained a bonus story). I thought that "Changes" and "We Can Get Them For You Wholesale" were particularly good. A couple of the stories fell flat for me, but the good ones were so perfect they made up for it. I think that Gaiman's prose is much better than his poetry but that didn't make his poetry bad - just not as good. Anyway, much worth reading in here.

A Benjamin Justice Mystery
Benjamin Justice knows a reporter is nothing without credibility. He learned the hard way when a Pulitzer was snatched from his grasp. It's been a long, hard climb to find even a fraction of the work he once had. But his fortunes are about to change: Justice has been offered the opportunity to script a documentary for public television.
Only after he accepts the job does he learn a crucial piece of information: The man who had the assignment before him has disappeared, leaving behind his trashed motel room-and a spattering of blood. As Justice delves into his predecessor's notes and follows his tracks, he enters a world of pleasure and peril-and deadly secrets. And soon it will not be his reputation Justice must protect...but his very life.

One tragedy after another.......2005-03-30
I would actually have given this book 2 and 1/2 stars, but I decided to round down. There are four main problems with this book, and the entire Ben Justice series in general; 1) the ridiculous ease in which Justice is able to get information out of people. Friends, colleagues, even strangers who are unwilling to talk to the police happily confess all to Justice, and it's a bit unbelievable. 2) The romance between Ben and another character is very hard to swallow, and very unconvincing. 3) So many tragedies occur to Ben Justice that it almost becomes a parody. I almost expected Ben to find out that he was adopted on the last page! 4) The resolution is rushed and unsatisfactory. It's one thing to leave some plotlines hanging and a few doors open, but at the end there are characters that literally disappear without any dramatic resonance. I'd give an example, but I don't want to spoil the book for anyone that hasn't read it. This book was a disappointing entry in the Justice series.
Mr. Wilson is a risk-taker!.......2004-01-13
If you are looking for a nice mystery where everything gets worked out almost mathematically in the end, this book is not for you. If, however, you are prepared to be blown away by a story that stetches the very limits of the mystery genre, then this one's for you. Mr. Wilson creates larger-than-life characters, many of whom you will care about desperately. And all the good guys don't win in the end. Sound like life? The novel ends with important questions not answered. Perhaps we'll get those answers in the next in this series if we find out whether or not Benjamin Justice is at risk.
Mr. Wilson, through the main character and narrator, Ben Justice, grapples with difficult subjects: corruption in the LA Police Department--there are references to the Rodney King debacle--corruption in the newspaper media, the insanity of "barebacking." Along with Justice, we meet again Harry and Templeton as well as Justice's older landlords. (Actually they're touring Europe on a sort of second honeymoon while Justice looks after their animals and housesits for them.)
Wilson secondarily has almost written a travelogue for a great part of Los Angeles. I got a better feel for this city from him than I have gotten from other "serious" travel writers.
Early in the novel, Ben stops at a mystery bookstore to buy the last copy of Walter Mosley's GONE FISHIN', as Wilson once again pays tribute to another fine California mystery writer.
Solid Mystery.......2001-08-16
Intrigued after reading the previous reviews, I went and purchased this book first, even though I believe it is the 3rd of the series. I won't go into the plot but I will say that the author develops his characters in such a way that you feel as if you really know and care about what happens. Excellent pace to the story. Had me turning pages to find out what happened next. Enjoyed it so much I went and bought 2 of the other novels in the series. Recommended.
Hard questions.......2000-12-30
I like this series because the most difficult questions are raised and the author faces them with honesty and fearlessness. He isn't afraid to take us all the way down the darkest corridors of ourselves or of the society we have created. I read and re-read all of them and ask myself the same questions, Justice asks. What is desire? If we follow it, where will it take us? What is honesty and when is it useful, when distructive? How do we deal with the persistance of slings and arrows, especially as we get older? And the terrible reality of not knowing ever, really, why we do what we do. Wilson asks more than this, following the answers relentlessly toward often ambiguous conclusions. These books are thought provoking as well as entertaining. Tough stuff, but irresistible and memorable.
Another great Mystery!.......2000-11-10
I really enjoyed this third Benjamin Justice novel. Ben is such a wonderful character, and now that he has turned 40, things are looking up for him. He's got a new job at a Public Broadcasting Station writing a documentary series on AIDS and bare-back riding, a very controversial new trend. Justice and his new associate producer go looking for the episode's producer, Tommy Callahan, who hasn't been heard from in over a week. Tommy is later found murdered. It's from this point on in the story that Ben gets involved in solving this mystery, and his life gets turned upside down, and backwards. At the same time, Ben is struggling with his love life, infatuated with Peter, the associate producer ( a blond beauty) and Oree, a sophisticated gentlemen more his own age.
There's always plenty of surprises in John Wilson's novels, and this one is one of his best. You just can't wait to get to the end to find out how everything is going to turn out. And the characters are always so well-developed you feel like they could be your friends. I read his last mystery, "The Limits of Justice" first, so now I am working on his previous three. It's best if you can start from his first one, and read the whole series in order, although each book stands on its own. If you like mysteries, you'll really enjoy this one, I did.

Original series gets better.......2006-06-28
Sadar's Keep is the second book in the Oran Trilogy, which follows several different groups all vying for the control and future of a country called Oran.
There's still typos in this book, although not as bad as the first. (However, I did do a double take when I realized a whole sentence had been printed twice in succession!) Call me picky, but I really do like to read my books without glaring grammatical errors.
In Sadar's Keep we get to explore more of the characters' emotions and motives as they prepare to do battle at Sadar, the site of the last big battle between two of the elemental queens. This book finally tells us why the Burning occurred, as well as giving us a better history and understanding of the country, and sets up what it means for the ultimate fate of Oran if the current state of things is allowed to continue.
I like stories and characters that are well thought out and have more than one side to them (not all good, not all bad). In this book, the author hints that although the former elemental queen Huld had good reasons for trying to subdue Zorah, she wasn't entirely blameless or had the best of motives for her actions.
The soon-to-be queens continue to mature in this book, as they begin to realize their importance to the current rebellion and future of the country, and even their ties to the past. While the past may have shaped them into their inescapable destiny, they are by no means bound by it when it comes to their decisions and actions.
Definitely an enjoyable read and a great set up for the final book.
A very enjoyable read.......1999-05-05
I didn't know it was part of a series. But the end is open and just begging for another title, so I came looking her - discovering it is the second title in the serie! I've already ordered the finale (Beldans Fire)...
A Very Interesting and Enlightening Book.......1998-05-15
I thought this book was great, one of the best fantasy stories I have ever read. Not only does it include magic, and lively characters, but explores one individuals total fear of death. A very fascinating story.
A well-crafted fantasy world and excellent magic system........1997-09-18
This story continues the tale of the Queen's Four Quarters begun in Snyder's "New Moon." Enough background information is given, however, that it can be read on its own. The cast of characters are sympathetic and well drawn. You come to truly care for the fate of Oran, suffering under the Silean occupation brought in by the country's own Queen

Want to understand soft tissue injuries? Get this book........2005-11-08
This book is an OUTSTANDING resource (and real eye-opener) for the practitioner as well as for the average person who just wants to understand how things happen in the body and why it can be so hard for some injuries to heal.
Mr. Benjamin is a truly excellent educator who can get the knowledge across in a clear and concise manner. I have personally taken quite a bit of additional training from him revolving around the fundamentals laid out in this book. I can honestly say that it changed my life and my career as a massage therapist.
This is a book that you will refer to CONSTANTLY. It is invaluable.
Very well written.......2003-06-15
This is an easy to understand book. I learned a great deal from it. The author knows his stuff, and wrote the book so you don't have to have a great deal of knowledge to follow along. I would recommend this to anyone who deals with injuries, or who has an injury or pain and wants to learn more about it.
Invaluable resource guide!.......1999-10-18
Ben Benjamin has been my favorite bodywork writer for a long time. I read all of his columns in the American Massage Therapy Association Journal. This book has been thoroughly used so that the cover has even fallen off! Keep up the great writing Ben! Having authored "The Healing Art of Sports Massage", I have a specific need to know things for my practice to be successful!
a great reference book.......1999-02-22
This is a good book if you are experiencing any pain. It will discribe the problem you are having and how to treat it. It could even save you from going to the doctors office and spending unessesary money if you are sure of your problem and can treat it yorself. I enjoy having this book around. It is a good reference book.
Helpful information in layman's terms. I recommend highly........1998-10-14
This book gives clear, understandable step-by-step guidelines to help the reader identify what type of injury is causing his/her pain. This book helped me understand what my chiropractor and sports doctor did not, that I had a torn ligament in my back. This excellent book also describes exercises that will contribute to the healing of one's injury.

NOT the annual recipes.......2007-03-03
I do like Cooking Light recipes, so I'm sure the ones in the book are fine. However, I just ordered a copy for myself and it is NOT the annual recipes book. I am trying to replace my Cooking Light magazine collection with the books (to save space) and this does not contain the recipes from the magazines from 1995 (they put the books out the following year for the previous year's recipes). I haven't actually tried any, so I'm giving it a neutral star rating of 3.
Great Book.......1999-08-02
I bought this book when it first came out and I use it over and over again. The recipes are easy, they turn out great and best of all my family will eat the things I make. I think you will like it too.
A must have cookbook for everyone........1998-06-16
I am not a great cook and can't always take the time to try new recipes, but the photos got me inspired and the recipes kept me going. The recipes are easy enough for everyday use. My daughter is learning how to cook and this is a great book for her to start with. Now I'm checking out the other Cooking Light cookbooks.

Doesn't get much cuter than this!.......2007-05-14
I have been quilting for a while and have seen many a (children's) quilt book and none have come as close as this as being inspiring, well-put together and with such great instructions, that it's hard to make a mistake. I made the Doggie In Flight quilt for my son and he sooo treasures it, both sides of it. I am making the ladybug one and plan to make the camping one for my older boy. I've had this book a few years and whenever I feel blue and uninspired, I just pick Jennifer's book up and my day is brightened.
In addition, Jennifer has designed some awesome fabrics that really give a quilt that quality look. I sometimes lack confidence in my color and blending choices, but this book makes it "kid's play".
EVERY quilt is wonderful (usually not all in a quilt book, maybe 2 or 3 are great and the others so-so). Even if you don't have children it's a nice book to have because, well, someone is usually having a baby, or child's birthday, etc. Some of the quilts are more difficult than others, but the instructions are straight forward. Besides the featured projects the book has lots and lots of quilts as display and inspiration, so no, not all the quilts come with instructions, just the featured quilt projects. But it gives one the opportunity to look at color choices and a similar pattern if you like the quilt used as decor. The bonus is that there are many decorating ideas (for those who need it, like me).
Jennifer, you and your sister did a fantastic job. Please come out with another book, my boys are getting older!
Sweet Inspiration!.......2001-08-03
This book is a darling, inspirational book on nursery decorating. It is based on designs with the baby quilt as the central focal point. There are lots of tips on room color and ideas on furniture to use, etc. I think the ideas may be challenging to create for people who don't sew or paint (aren't crafters), but the book is lovely and has a wonderful inspirational value which anyone decorating a nursery should enjoy. Jennifer Sampou designs fabric for Koffman, so look for her 100% cotton fabrics in quilting fabric stores! They are also lovely!
Great Ideas Abound!!!.......2001-07-11
I received this book from my sister who is helping me decorate the nursury for my baby due in September. I needed inspiration and found it here in this lovely and beautiful book. I hadn't thought of creating a room around a quilt, but that is the approach in this book. I chose to create a variation on the little red hen room as it suited the style of my home.
I found the directions for the quilt clear and the designer touches full of practial information. This is a great book full of great ideas. I recommend it highly!
Not quite Quilting, but interesting.......2001-05-27
Pay special attention to the subtitle of this book. It is mainly a decorating book, including one quilt in each room. Sometimes there are no directions for the quilt. Jennifer has been designing fabrics I love for a long time. She is joined by her sister, a painter, for this project. There are some clever ideas and some where you will think, "Are they kidding?" The rooms are gorgeous, but frankly, my children would have reduced them to rubble in a few short weeks. Many of the ideas are adaptable to guest rooms or for incorporation into more practical environments. Some ideas are silly, but then we expect a certain amount of that from decorators and prefer to dream about that life where we might actually live in rooms like these.

Good Company for All Who Love Movies.......2007-05-07
If Ernest Hemingway had made movies, they would have looked something like John Huston's. The passion, intelligence, and joie de vivre of Huston's films are reflected in this set of articulate interviews. Pour yourself a good drink, and listen as one of Hollywood's best raconteurs spins yarn after yarn in this splendid volume of a valuable series.
Listening to a Fascinating Man.......2005-07-31
This is a terrific book. It consists of interviews with John Huston from 1952-85. Not only does the reader find out about Huston's ideas on filmmaking and get some inside info on the making of classic films, but he will find out about the breadth of Huston's interests, which extended beyond filmmaking to art and philosophy. Here, truly, was an intelligent man.
The most interesting thing to me about Huston was that he started in the classic studio age and survived its downfall to make films that were fresh, interesting and important even in the Eighties. These interviews show Huston's mental flexibility. He admires "McCabe and Mrs. Miller," "Rocky," and "Taxi Driver." Huston is also quite frank about his own films. I will never be tempted to see "Roots of Heaven" or "Barbarian and the Geisha." I have to see "Moby Dick," which he considered one of his films that never got its due.
I was sorry when this book ended.

Ably edited by independent scholar and freelance writer Robert Long, John Huston: Interviews is an informative and insightful compilation of interviews with the late John Huston (which took place from 1952 to 1985) in which he personally comments on his life and projects as an acclaimed filmmaker. Among the movies that are surveyed within this context are The Maltese Falcon, Key Largo, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The African Queen, The Night of the Iguana, Prizzi's Honor, and The Dead.
