Book Description
#1 New York Times bestselling author Judith McNaught crafts a thrilling tale filled with unrelenting suspense, unforgettable characters, and powerful undercurrents of greed, ambition, and desire.
Leigh Kendall reveled in her stellar Broadway acting career and in her marriage to Logan Manning, scion of an old New York family. When her husband finds the perfect mountain property for their dream house, he decides to surprise Leigh with her first view of the site. Driving upstate on a winter's night, Leigh is run off the road in the midst of a blinding blizzard. When she awakes in the local hospital, seriously injured, the police inform her that her husband has mysteriously disappeared, and Leigh, although obviously distraught, becomes the focus of their suspicions. The more she discovers about her husband and his business affairs, the less she realizes she knew about Logan Manning. Now, Leigh is heading deeper and deeper into unknown territory...where friends and enemies are impossible to distinguish, and where the truth becomes the most terrifying weapon of all.
Customer Reviews:
Not her best, but I still love her........2007-09-11
If there is anyone who is new to McNaught and this has been your first novel and was disappointed (as I), please don't let it be the last from this author. That would be a tragedy. Check out PARADISE and read the 5-star rave reviews on here. All her historical romances are worth reading as well.
I wasn't overly impressed with this one but I honestly can't find myself rating anything she's written below 4 stars simply because I revere her a lot as a writer. Ms. McNaught is a phenomenal author and one can witness it in all of her previous novels. She has penned many beautiful, poignant love stories, and she won't ever change as my #1 favorite romance writer.
...however I felt something for this one was lacking.
Certain parts of the book seemed hastened while certain scenes seemed dragged out. Ms. McNaught is a great when it comes to building up the anticipation of the union between the hero and the heroine but I felt none in the case of Leigh and Michael; it was too abrupt. I was still rooting for Logan and Leigh to be reunited throughout much of the duration and had difficulty processing Michael into the picture until the very end but by then, the story was already ending. In short, their passion seemed somewhat forced, something that I never felt before in any of her previous novels where the flame steathily crept in with burning intensity and swept me right along.
On the positive side, it was a unique, well thought-out plot despite pitfalls along the way. I liked the way how she fused Leigh's and Michael's pasts together when she recognized "Falco" (reminiscent a la "Remember When"). Her secondary characters were brilliant and this is where her trademark JM writing shined. Sam Littleton was a far more intriguing character, who reminded me of a sassier and wittier version of Sloane Reynolds in "Night Whispers" but with the same warmth. And acting twice as a supporting character, Courtney Maitland never failed to amuse me with her no-nonsense humor and sass. What a character. I would love to see her become her own heroine in another novel.
.....
BUT. Most of her other contemporaries are all gems, especially Paradise, Perfect, and Double Standards. ALL her historical romances are treasures ("A Kingdom of Dreams" being my zenith favorite).
Despite some disappointments in this one, I still remain JM's loyal fan for life. She has written many splendid previous novels and I say this without any reservation.
I do not understand overall lower customer average rating..........2007-04-12
I have now read all McNaughts books but Night Whispers. I hesitated reading "Someone to Watch over me" because of the 31/2 star rating, but I enjoy McNaught books over all other writers in this genre, so I figured it was better than most other books out there. This book, from beginning to end, surprised me and I do not understand the customers' overall lower rating. Thanks McNaught for intertwining a plot carefully tied to a love story worthy of reading both, regardless of plausibility...this is romance fiction afterall. I will order Night Whispers today.
Loved it!!.......2007-03-08
A great read, definitely worth your time. The characters are developed well and the story is great all the way to the end! A keeper!!
Mack McCord and Sam Littleton should have been main characters!.......2007-01-06
I've always admired JM for her ability to create realistic characters, but I don't know what happened to Michael Valente and Leigh Manning. Perhaps if Valente had first been introduced to us on his own turf rather than from law enforcement's point of view, he wouldn't have been so difficult to get a handle on. Since he was the obvious 'hero' of the book, I didn't like not knowing if he was good or bad or what.
He and Leigh both had such bland personalities, they never once seemed real; their dialogue, especially Leigh's was so robotic, so boring.
On the other hand, Mack McCord and Samantha Littleton were fabulously paired and both were extremely interesting. Sam was beautiful and her intelligence often came through in her subtle, classy manner. This was my 2nd reading of this novel, and I found that I wanted to reread it for these two secondary characters rather than for Valente and Leigh Manning.
McCord and Littleton make the book worthy of 5 stars.
And I can't forget Detective Shrader; he was great! The author did a great job with this character and Jason Solomon's character as well.
Someone to Watch Over Me.......2007-01-03
The is one of my favorites. I love her characters. I like past characters appearing in her books. They are like family. I like the fact that she doesn't have to use vulgarity in her stories to tell a good, interesting and adult story. I love the mystery and the suspense. Of course, I have all of her books as I have followed her writing since the first historical. I don't know how she could ever top this story, but I'm impatiently waiting!! I hope it isn't 3 years again!
Book Description
Where angels fear to tread . . .
Fever Devlin leaves his university job to return to his home in the Georgia Appalachians, prepared to confront the ghosts of his past. But his arrival is greeted with the discovery of a body on the porch of the family cabin -- a corpse that turns out to be a half brother Fever never knew existed.
The truth about the murder and the secrets surrounding Fever's life remain hidden in the determined silence of the locals. He must sort through his quirky family history -- where an adulterous mother, an unnamed father, a secret diary and a priceless church relic become the pieces in a puzzle of grim awakening and dark suspicion.
It takes the brutal murder of an old wood-carver to expose the festering secrets of this mountain community where the dead tell no tales -- and a killer plots to ensure Fever joins their eternal silence.

Linger on the Devil's Hearth.......2007-07-04
Readers who insist on action-packed car chases and hair-raising gun battles, beware. Although there are a fair number of dead bodies in THE DEVIL'S HEARTH, DePoy manages to heighten suspense using subtle interplay between believable, albeit tight-lipped characters.
This is often done with what I would call rocking-chair drama -- played out against the fascinating backdrop of a dying culture, with a thoroughly satisfying coming together of the various plot lines at the end.
Grab yourself a mug of tea -- or a jug of moonshine -- to savor along with this good story. Linger over your reflections. They're bound to crop up as you read this one.
First in series a true pleaser.......2007-06-26
The Devil's Hearth by Phillip DePoy is the first book in the Fever Devilin series about a folklorist in the Appalachias of Georgia. Fever "Dev" Devilin returns home to Blue Mountain after a long absence to recover from the loss of his job at Burrison College. Unfortunately he's welcomed by a corpse on his front porch that bears an uncanny resemblance to Dev. With his friends Deputy Skidmore "Skid" Needle and colleage Dr. Winton Andrews, Dev quickly starts investigating the mysterious death and find out who may want him dead. This book is full of twists and turns, most of them in Dev's own narration. As a folklorist, he truly loves the people of his home and their stories and skills. Often the mystery takes a backseat to the explanation of a rope lathe for making ladderback chairs or the story behind a folksong. Dev is torn about his family's unusually twisted past. (Wouldn't you get angry if everyone kept telling you "You know how your mother was"?) The pieces come together slowly even as Dev insists that the mystery itself is far more interesting than the solution. His investigative skills make him the perfect detective and Skid and Andrews make for humorous foils. DePoy alternates violence with quiet humor in a bittersweet way. The villain does a great deal of exposition at the end, but I'm sure DePoy will work out that flaw in future books. Dev is an engaging tourguide through the mountains of Georgia and its people.
Deadly Dull.......2006-05-19
Combine these elements: a murder mystery, folk music, folklore, and an idyllic setting in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains. How could this book not be a winner? Phillip Depoy manages to take an interesting plot, and from it create a totally boring novel. The higher the body count, the bigger the yawns.
A very good read........2005-04-06
With a mix of music, craftsmanship, food and moonshine, we are given a wonderful sense of life in Fever's Appalachia. But DePoy also includes the dark side of folklore and secrets. Fever is an intriguing protagonist supported by interesting secondary characters and a few stereotypes to lighten the mood. Since I've already ordered the next in the series, I'd say that's a definite recommend.
Multi-layered brilliance.......2004-10-04
DePoy has become my favorite author with his two books in this series. I know a bit about folklore and the people of the mountains and they are portrayed accurately and with great compassion here. The mystery is a real one, the characters alive and complete, and the insight into a hidden world -- the world of shape note music, Melungeons, hidden travelers, and front porch conversations -- make this book a warm, inviting place to be. I can't wait for the next one.
Book Description
Canada's greatest unknown composer, Maddalo McCannuck makes his living by digging holes in the ground at the archaeological site of the Devil's lair, in Italy.
After twenty years of passionate studies, Mad McCannuck finds himself alone, his wife gone, no friends, thousands of old records and a handful of debris.
Until one day, the unexpected happens. A daughter born of his one great love, a college girl whose existence was a secret, comes looking for her dad.
McCannuck is not himself. Is he prepared to dig up the past? Can he reveal himself, show her what he really is: a mad composer, an idealist, a loner, a loser?
Must he become the enchanting story-teller of the Devil's Lair?
While piecing together the scattered fragments of a mosaic, his past, McCannuck struggles to find his greatest treasure in his true and native land: a family, a home.
Customer Reviews:
Our Heritage.......2002-09-28
The author, now forty it seems, has grasped what defines a generation, his, much of it spent in Canada. Strange, though, that it has taken someone who has been living in Italy such a long time has been able to scratch beneath the surface to find, or at least explore, what it means to be Canadian. Not all the answers are provided, or found for that matter, an impossible task, I think. Interesting, too, this game he plays with his daughter, trying to enchant her as any writer would a reader.

Outstanding.......2006-01-09
It's hard to imagine finding more value for a few bucks than Jean Carper's various books, including 'Miracle Heart'. So I've given a couple dozen of these to friends, relatives, and employees. Because of this book, my wife & I have been on about 5 grams of citrus pectin per day (chapter 12) for a year and a half plus other recommendations longer. My dad & brother already have stents, and my wife's mother died of complications from strokes. We recently had our hearts scanned for hard plaque and both came up totally clean. Co-incidence?
Jean Carper's style is to usually cover one subject per chapter and reference the original research sources. Although I might like it a little more brief, I think she says enough to cover the subject without being too verbose. She covers a few or several subjects, puts a cover on it and goes to print.
We have serveral Carper books as well as another 50 health books. I think Jean Carper is one of the best sources in our library. Is this book perfect? Absolutely Not. Is it Outstanding? Absolutely Yes. Read it for what is there, not for what is not there.
In addition to diet and exercise!.......2000-07-26
I understand the points of the previous reviewer. As a journalist, Carper might have included information from the studies he/she is referring to. However, I believe that those who are buying books like Miracle Heart are because they are already monitoring their diet and exercise to keep their hearts healthy. Supplements do just that: supplement what we are already doing. Co-Q10, ALA, HGH etc are not to replace choosing to exercise to eat a healthy diet. I took Carper's information as a means to supplement what I am already doing. My parents are taking Co-Q10 as part of their array of supplements and are feeling healthier. They get their supplements from a site called PapaNature because it offers documentation, a variety of brands and door to door service.
very informative.......2000-03-16
This book summarizes much of the latest research on prevention of cardiovascular related diseases. The author covers almost all (forgot, e.g. "melatonin") of the bases in relating the latest developments in diet related heart disease prevention, and as such I found it an excellent informative book. The author reports the studies, the results, the recommendations and the dosages relating to supplementation of vitamins, minerals, some herbal products, omega 3, etc. etc. The book contains new information that I believe has yet to be widely disemminated.. I discern the same weakness in this book as in much of the current information on diet, to wit, how to combine all into a single plan of treatment. The author might have reported to us that studies have yet to be done on how these divergent benefits of supplements can be advantageously and safely combined, but instead omitted any such discussion. Additionally, and I note this as another suspected weakness in my mind of the medical work currently being done on diet, it seems that all of the information is coming out of what I consider to be highly suspicious "population" studies, as opposed to research on individuals( or monkees) on the chemical effects on a single individual of supplementation. If I am going to take 1000 grams of vitamin C per day, I would like to know the immediate and long term chemical effect, as opposed to knowing that 6000 people lowered their risk of heart attack by 19% by so taking. And, then, immediately after reading the book, what do we get but one study concluding that excess C contributes to, rather than prevents, the problem. But as an educational tool this is a very fine effort!

Bestselling cookbook author Rose Elliot offers the essential guide to vegan cooking.
Customer Reviews:
A significant addition to any veg cookbook library!.......2002-08-19
While it isn't difficult for vegans to modify most vegetarian recipes, it is nice not to have to. A quality vegan recipe book is important for those of us who don't use products from animals and who want diversity in our meals. Rose Elliot dispels many of the myths commonly associated with vegetarian and vegan diets. At the beginning of her book, Elliot deals with misconceptions that much of society has concerning protein, iron, calcium and vitamin B12. After putting the reader's mind to rest concerning these items, Elliot briefly states some of the benefits of vegetarian and vegan diets. The book has a variety of nutritious recipes in the following sections: Soups; Dips; Sandwiches and Bread-based Snacks; Salads, Dressings and Appetizers; Sauces; Pastry Dishes; Pasta Dishes; Legume Dishes; Grain and Nut Dishes; Potato Dishes; Desserts; and Scones, Cakes and Cookies.
As with her book Vegetarian Christmas, Elliot's recipes are easy to prepare and sound delicious. Each recipe includes the number of servings it makes and many recipes include variations. A few of the recipes that I'm looking forward to trying are: Lentil Loaf, Stuffed Nut Roast, Instant Vegan Raspberry Ice, Christmas (plum) Pudding, Spring Rolls with Dipping Sauce, and Bread Sauce.
Vegan Feasts is an excellent recipe book that will be a significant addition to any vegetarian's or vegan's cookbook library! -Reviewed by N. Glenn Perrett
Great desserts!.......2001-03-22
The thing that makes this book worth having is the dessert section. I haven't made many of the savory recipies as I can manage without a recipie book for those, the thing I think every vegan needs help on is puddings and sweet things. As a vegan I really miss things like 'steamed suryp pudding' and 'chocolate cheese cake' and 'rum truffles' - untill now. This book is great because it doesn't assume that because you're vegan you only want to eat low fat carob things, it gives great recipies using proper chocolate, vegan buiscits and vegan cream. This is heaven for those of you who really miss dairy desserts - you need never go without treats again!!
Very disappointing.......2001-01-21
I've tried several recipes out of this book and have been very disappointed with the results. The 'Broccoli and almond quiche' is very oily and doesn't taste that great. The 'Lentil loaf' is just awful. The 'Couscous with chickpea stew' is okay, but doesn't give enough reason to buy this book.
This book contains a lot of oily, deep-fry, margarine and sugar recipes. The writer is from the UK and the dishes remind me of some vegan food I tasted when I was over there.
I hate to say anything negative about a vegan book (I'm a vegan myself), but this book just isn't good advertisement for veganism in my opinion.
great book great food.......2001-01-08
I knew Rose Elliot's books, some years ago when I lived in England, and when I decided becoming vegetarian. Her food is simple to make, whith ordinary ingredients, but is always delicious. Her lemony vegetables and brown rice is always a winner with me and my husbang.God save Rose Elliot.

Magnificent. One of the very best books about moviemaking........2003-01-31
A cineaste may not treat Vincent Sherman with the same regard usually reserved for Welles, Ford, Fellini, or Godard, but a movie buff remembers and appreciates the underrated Sherman's quiet craftsmanship on many popular Hollywood features. Sherman has been an actor, writer, producer, and director -- an all-around "fixer" who could take a bad project and make it saleable, and a promising project and make it successful. He brings the same practicality, insight, and honesty to this fascinating autobiography.
"Studio Affairs" gives the reader an insider's look at the Hollywood studio system, with its stepping stones and setbacks. Vincent Sherman worked with such luminaries as Jack Warner, Harry Cohn, Bette Davis, Errol Flynn, Humphrey Bogart, Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, Rita Hayworth, Claude Rains, even The Dead End Kids. Sherman wore many hats, and he details his varied dealings with actors and colleagues with remarkable candor. His personal life is as compelling as his professional career.
"Studio Affairs" is engrossing reading. On more than one occasion this reviewer intended to spend a few minutes with the book, and was hooked for more than an hour at a time. Vincent Sherman deserves a standing ovation for his work, and for this book. Movie fans should enjoy this book very much indeed.
