Book Description
The second book in the trilogy that launched one of the most important fantasy writers of our time
Customer Reviews:
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
The conflict in the ice could make you feel that biting, terrible cold,
so that was very well done. Simon, no longer a boy, but a man capable
of taking care of himself, has done the fantasy thing and won the sword
from the dragon.
Prince Joshua, in the meantime, while waiting for the sword, has
his own problems with battles and politics, and must try to reach the
Stone of Farewell, while surviving the bitter winter that his nemesis
has brought about.
The epic adventure continues.......2007-07-12
The Stone of Farewell is the second installment in Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series. Like the first installment, this is a hefty-sized book that will keep the fantasy enthusiast well-entertained for some time.
Please know that epic fantasies are not for everyone. They are bigger, slower, and involve a whole lot of characters (many with goofy names). Personally, I enjoy the bigger stories as I feel it just makes the fictional world more real and enjoyable, but I understand others may feel weighed down by all the detail.
Stone of Farewell is divided into several storylines as characters are all over the place doing very different things. You'll follow Simon, Binabik and Sludig as they try to bring the magic sword "Thorn" to Josua at the Stone of Farewell. You'll also follow Prince Josua and his remaining party from the disastrous fall of Naglimund as they also seek the Stone of Farewell. You'll tag along with Miriamelle and Cadrach as they just try to stay out of trouble, rather unsuccessfully. You'll spend more time with Tiamak, the swamp native who is a member of the League of the Scroll as he really makes his way into the story. And you'll also follow along with Eolair and Maegwin as they adjust to life under the mountains, and what they encounter there.
Sure, it sounds like a lot to keep up with, and it is. But Williams does a good job of keeping most of these storylines engaging. The only one I didn't care for much was Miriamele and Cadrach's. I didn't find these pages particularly exciting. In fact, at times, I thought their story could be told in half the time that was spent on them.
Williams writes beautifully, decribing scenes in wonderfully vivid details. The characters feel like real people. It is rare that I would think that one of their actions seemed completely unreasonable for their character.
This is an enjoyable read, and if you read the first book, you really need to read this one. It's even better. I can't wait to get through the third. Enjoy.
Excellent Epic--Review on the Trilogy.......2007-03-15
I have very little to say about Tad Willaims other than he has an astounding imagination and is always a joy to read. This is the second book in the trilogy. I almost gave up after 100 pages or so of the first book. After I stuck with it I realized that the reasons for me not enjoting the first part of this book are the same reasons I loved the rest of the trilogy. I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys fanatsy.
Slows a Bit Toward the Middle of the Trilogy.......2006-08-14
It is a time of darkness, dread and ultimate testing for the real of Osten Ard, for the wild magic and terrifying minions of the undead Sith ruler, Ineluki, the Storm King, are spreading their seeming undefeatable evil across the kingdom. With the very land blighted by the power of Ineluki's wrath, the tattered remains of a once-proud human army flee in search of a last sanctuary and rallying point-the Stone of Farwell, a place shrouded in mystery and ancient sorrow.
And even as Prince Josua seeks to rally his scattered forces, Simon and the surviving members of the League of the Scroll are desperately struggling to fulfill missions which will take them from the fallen citadels of humans to the hidden mountain caves of Qanuc trolls..across storm-tormented waters to discover the truth behind an almost-forgotten legend..to the secret heartland of the Sithi, where the near-immortals must at last decide whether to ally with the race of men in a final war against those of their own blood.
Now known as Simon Snowlock, because of the white tuft of hair on his forehead, the former kitchen boy continues his arduous journey in the service of the rebel Prince Josua, brother to the (human) High King, and enters the last great citadel of the Sithi.
...and the great adventure continues........2006-08-03
Book Two of Tad Williams' long epic series Memory, Sorrow and Thorn is great. It starts out right where the last story left off and even gives a synopsis of the first book for those who are too lazy to read it. However, after reading that part, it really doesnt help much and one could easily get lost if they hadnt read the first book, the Dragonbone Chair first. Plus, you miss out on so much character development. Anyways, Stone of Farewell picks up a lot faster than the first book and continues on its pace all the way through to the end. I like how the author continued to have SImon's character grow up, becoming more and more of a man. I was worried this would not be the case, but Williams accurately describes Simon's coming of age and his eventual maturing and does it very well. Some new characters are introduced, which is pretty typical for fantasy, and it really becomes apparent the battle of good versus evil. What is really great is how Williams builds the characters. He really gets you attached to them and care about what each of them have to say. SOme parts of the first book were very confusing but Tad straightens us out in this second helping. A side note: this book is much shorter and easier to read than the Dragonbone Chair. Pick it up, but make sure you read the first book first, fans of fantasy rejoice, Mr. Williams has done it again.

Customer Reviews:
Texas Tangle.......2006-02-13
This is only the second book I have read of Nancy Fairbanks. It is fast paced and educational and I love the way she lets the other character,Luz, give her opinons on the side....so to speak. Two complaints I had is that (one) Carolyn is suppose to have lived in El Paso for sometime now....BUT she seems to know very little, if any, Spanish words. She can recite a millions facts, but how about a couple Spanish words? Having Carolyn ask Luz all the time what a word in Spanish meant was a little annoying. Also (two)...the author seems to want to split her personality. One is with all the sweetness and naivete of June Cleaver and the other is akin to Stephanie Plum. I'm a little confused as who the real Carolyn Blue is? The recipes throughout the book help soothe a lot of ills so I may read another copy.
the best yet.......2005-03-27
Holy Guacamole is the best Carolyn Blue mystery so far! Lots of fun and lots of food.
Holy Guacamole.......2005-01-24
This is a light and fun book. One of the references used is from a book written by one of my family members. El Paso is a little known city in Texas. It is actually the 19th largest city in the nation, and the largest on any part of the U.S border. This book gives us a glimpse El Paso's culture, climate and ambiance. The recipies included are from some of the finest restaurants, serving the best Mexican Food this side of the border. There's lots to learn and new food to try.
All hail Macbeth, di Scozia re!.......2005-01-23
This is an unassuming, yet amusing mystery. Its protagonist is a woman with an admirable propensity for taking up arms against a sea of troubles while tossing off historical tidbits and Texas-oriented recipes along the way. I have no qualms about recommending this book to anyone with a taste for contemporary foodie whodunits. Part of the book, however, deals with a local university's production of Giuseppe Verdi's opera, "Macbeth," and I have a mind to offer a comment or two on that.
The producer-director of the opera, we are told by the heroine-narrator, has taken diabolical liberties with the piece, liberties enough to rile her and everybody else in the audience into a state of sputtering indignation. These liberties are even offered later in the book, albeit half-heartedly, as sufficient reason why the aforementioned producer-director so soon takes on the new role of First Murder Victim.
As far as I can see, just three specific liberties are set out for the operatic "Macbeth." First, the setting is changed from 11th Century Scotland to contemporary El Paso. Second, the protagonists are no longer nobles embroiled in a civil war over Scotland but gangs embroiled in a civil war over turf. Third, the witches, whom Verdi had made into a chorus of women, have been converted into a trio of individual singers. (This third change is regarded by the narrator as a GOOD THING.)
Speaking as an opera fan, one who has been assailed by productions of Mozart's "Cosi fan tutte" set in a Brooklyn diner, Verdi's "Un ballo in maschera" placed in a latrine, Rossini's "Barber of Seville" transported to Baghdad, and Wagner's "Ring" plunked down in heaven knows what twisted and incoherent universe, these "Macbeth" liberties seem awfully mild.
That everyone in the theater would find them appalling is a concept that strikes me as hilariously unlikely. It must be remembered that a substantial portion of any paying audience at an opera house regards all music drama as merely an interval between periods of serious drinking. That portion neither knows nor cares. Then, there is the segment of the audience that takes any new twist, no matter how bizarre, no matter how irrational, no matter how inappropriate, as a stroke of genius, and they will loudly trumpet their own open-minded appreciation for it. Another portion just comes to hear the diva sing; they couldn't care less about her surroundings. Some come just for the music and regard all physical stage production as intrinsically flawed. And the rest of us just look, groan and mumble that it might have been worse. In fifty years of opera attendance, I recall only five performances that I found faultless--and three of those were in the 1960s.
As for the liberties taken with the opera in the book, a struggle between thuggish nobles is not so different from battling gang lords; a turf war is a turf war. Between Scotland and El Paso--well, blasted heaths are not exactly unknown in either place. And as for the weird sisters, whether chorus or trio, they are still le sorelle vagabonde who on un giorno non vidi mai so foul and fair greet Macbeth to hail him di Glamis sire, di Caudor sire, and king that shall be.
serio-comic who-done-it .......2004-10-27
After traveling through several American states and quite a few foreign nations solving homicides along the way, Caroline finds a murder investigation in her own back yard in El Paso. They are attending the opera seeing a contemporary version of a Macbeth dealing in modern day illegal drug trafficking. Many are appalled at the changes artistic director Vladislav Gubenko made to the Bard's classic.
After eating tostados with guacamole, Vladislav leaves for home ignoring his irate critics. The next day his next door neighbor and former vice cop Luz finds Vladislav dead. The police think he choked to death in his vomit, but Luz believes otherwise; she feels a killer used a pillow to smother him. Luz and Carolyn try to learn who the killer is and why he murdered him. In the course of their investigation, they kidnap a Juarez based drug dealer and take him to the States for the bounty, rescue students from white slavery, and get men abusing their authorities by illegally jailing women for personal use. However, the Gubenko killer remains at the top of the list.
Many Americans and Mexicans see El Paso as a border town, but to Carolyn it is a cosmopolitan center with many of the good points that large cities contain with the additional influence of the borderland culture. Luz and Carolyn make a great crime fighting team who hopefully will continue to clean the streets from those felonious varmints. Nancy Fairbanks has written a serio-comic who-done-it in which Carolyn's trivial historical sputtering adds humor to the witty and exciting pursuit of a killer.

I have made the Chicken and Dill Soup recipe for our family and also for 2 sick friends. It helped "cure" these two wonderful ladies of their respiratory illnesses. I really do believe it has medicinal qualities.
I have also made the carrot soup which is delicious. And, I have made the 4 cheese Fettucine Alfredo, also, very rich and delicious. A little serving goes a long way!

Book Description
For centuries, the sampler has been a mainstay of the seamstress's craft, at once a didactic tool, a commercial showcase, and, frequently, a work of art in itself. This beautifully illustrated, accessible book presents a look at some remarkable samplers and offers a concise history of the form as well. Arranged like an alphabet, Samplers from A to Z concentrates on 26 examples, each chosen to illustrate a key facet of sampler artistry. The topic covered range from alphabets, embroidery, and cutwork to landscapes, spot samplers, and whitework. Pamela A. Parmal, who is also curator of the current exhibition of samplers at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, provides an overview of samplers and their role in industry and education throughout their history. This succinct, colorful book is ideal for anyone interested in the technique, history, or astounding beauty and variety of samplers.

These are delicious and practical recipes, tried & true........1997-08-27
I have a large cookbook collection, but I would definitely put "Home Cooking Sampler" by Peggy K. Glass on the small shelf of perennial favorites.
Most of the recipes I have tried have become standards made over & over for family and friends.
Her Buttermilk Pancakes are the best, and the Lemonade recipe is the one I make every summer. I wish all cookbooks were as simple and as full of delicious, reliable recipes as this one. Bravo, Ms. Glass! I am ordering your latest book today.

Description:
The capability of passive air sampling to be employed in the evaluation of direct genotoxicity of ambient air samples was assessed. Genotoxic effects of the total extracts from the polyurethane foam filters exposed for 28days during a regional passive air sampling campaign were investigated. Twenty sampling sites were selected in Brno city on the area of approximately 20x20km in October and November 2004. Brno is the second largest city of the Czech Republic, highly industrialized with approximately 370,000 of permanent inhabitants. The levels of PAHs, PCBs, and chlorinated pesticides were determined in all samples. Fraction of each extract was also assayed in the bacterial genotoxicity test using Escherichia coli sulA::lacZ. Complete dose-response relationships of the air extracts were determined. The statistical analysis showed significant correlation between observed biological effects and PAHs concentrations in samples.

Book Description
Building or rebuilding their houses was one of the main concerns of the English nobility and gentry, some might say their greatest achievement. This is the first book to look at the building of country houses as a whole. Creating Paradise shows why owners embarked on building programmes, often following the Grand Tour or excursions around other houses in England; where they looked for architectural inspiration and assistance; and how the building work was actually done. It deals not only with great houses, including Holkham and Castle Howard, but also the diversity of smaller ones, such as Felbrigg and Dyrham, and shows the cost not only of building but of decorating and furnishing houses and of making their gardens. Creating Paradise is an important and original contribution to its subject and a highly readable account of the attitude of the English ruling class to its most important possession.

Book Description
I've learned never to let momentary fear stand in my way. There are no excuses. I've learned that power is sexy. So is confidence in yourself.Patrika Darbo, the popular star of Days of Our Lives and the woman who TV Guide calls the "full-figured bitch goddess" of daytime television, has broken the size barrier and shattered the stereotype that heavy people are doomed to unhappy lives -- personally or professionally. Here Patrika shares her life story, writing with her heart on her sleeve about her hard-won victories as she offers advice -- not for losing weight, but for gaining confidence, a winning attitude, and a positive approach to life.Patrika doesn't ask anyone to change but simply to celebrate who they really are. Patrika herself wasn't always self-confident and savvy to the ways of Hollywood and the real world. Over the years, she's often been up and down on the scale; yet through all the diets and binges she's never lost sight of her dreams and has never let momentary fear stand in her way. She's the first to admit that issues of self-esteem go along with being big, but she's learned how to move beyond them and has never allowed conventional notions of beautylimit her or tell her what her life should be. No matter who you are or what size you're not, you can be beautiful, confident, and sexy. As Patrika takes you through her life story, she offers advice for living out loud and great pointers for making everyday exciting -- from the set of Days of Our Lives to the bedroom (or kitchen, or living room, or laundry room). Patrika encourages and inspires women of all sizes to remember the best of who they are.
Customer Reviews:
Get Real Patrika.......2006-01-08
Patrika could have penned a really great book, but instead she seemed to think she is all that and a much bigger celebrity than she really is. Had she just written a book with insights into what it's like to be a plus size actress without all the tons of personal who cares biographical crap and armchair psychology I really don't think she's appropriate to spew it really might have been fab. Instead it's a like a fat girl cheer but not from a real live like you and me fat girl, it's from a fat girl on her own pedestal (but who wear Cherokee?!) Read Camryn Manheim's memoir instead, it's MUCH better and she's much more true to life even though she is rightfully a much bigger deal than Patrika! Trust me, I've read all the fat girl memoirs!
left me cold.......2003-07-15
People who endured bad childhoods tend to either make the mistake of thinking that NOBODY in the world had it as bad as they did or they make the mistake of thinking that EVERYBODY is just as messed up as they are. Ms. Darbo takes the second road and it got really very tiresome. I've given this book away twice and got it back both times.
kiddo keeps scarfing it.......2003-06-26
I read this book because I a long time viewer of Days of our Lives, but haven't had the time to watch recently. Any large woman who gets popular is somebody I want to read about. After reading the trial of a woman who is large, but paid her dues I felt refreshed. This book is funny, with advice. It may not be advice you could use, but its there, with the message of "large woman like sex too."
Then when I tiredly decided to have a yard sale to get rid of my stuff, this book was on the "go" stack. Until that is my 17 year old saw it, grabbed it and hid it in her room.
I Loved This Book!.......2002-05-06
"365 Glorious Nights of Love and Romance" is inspiring and touching, but also humorous, sexy and a lot of FUN! I highly recommend it. As someone who has dealt with weight issues my whole life-I could identify with so much of what Patrika Darbo was saying. It made me realize you can't just sit back and let life pass you by. You've got to get out there and make the most of everyday-no matter what your size!
I also love that it is written so that it feels like Patrika is talking directly to you. It was EXCELLENT! You SHOULD read this book.
