Book Description
Lisa Edwards
This Prada-wearing magazine editor thinks her life is over when her "fabulous" new job turns out to be a deportation to Dublin to launch Colleen magazine. The only saving grace is that her friends aren't there to witness her downward spiral. Might her new boss, the disheveled and moody Jack Devine, save her from a fate worse than hell?
Ashling Kennedy
Ashling, Colleen's assistant editor, is an award-winning worrier, increasingly aware that something fundamental is missing from her life -- apart from a boyfriend and a waistline.
Clodagh "Princess" Kelly
Ashling's best friend, Clodagh, lives the domestic dream in a suburban castle. So why, lately, has she had the recurring urge to kiss a frog -- or sleep with a frog, if truth be told? As these three women search for love, success, and happiness, they will discover that if you let things simmer under the surface for too long, sooner or later they'll boil over.

"E-Book Extra: The Seven Deadlies: A Previously Unpublished Short Story by Marian Keyes
Hard-nosed, bitch-goddess London fashion editor Lisa Edwards was certain her ""fabulous"" promotion would mean more A-list parties, society page photos, and jet-setting jaunts to the fall collections.
Instead, she's being deported, Prada wardrobe and all, to supremely un-chic Dublin to launch Colleen magazine. Her assistant editor, over-organized world-class worrier Ashling Kennedy, however, is thrilled with her new job . . .until she discovers it comes with a very high price tag: Lisa Edwards. And then there's Ashling's oldest, dearest chum, Clodagh ""Princess"" Kelly, who seems to have achieved true happily-ever-after suburban fairy tale bliss -- but lately has this irresistible urge to kiss a frog. The chances of three such diverse, equally unsatisfied women bonding would be remote anywhere except in staid Dublin town, ""the magazine version of Siberia."" And once they do, they're going to start shaking things up -- in print and out of it -- especially when Colleen's rumpled, moody, wickedly attractive head honcho Jack Devine is tossed into the mix.

Not a page turner, but a page filler!.......2007-09-19
"What is written without effort is in general read without pleasure."
(Samuel Johnson).
Going through this book, I got the impression that Marian Keyes was fulfilling a contract with her publisher to produce a 'novel' that had to be in the bookstores by a certain date. So basically she got up in the morning and pounded away at her keyboard to string together a bunch of words, without heed to plot, characters, insight, or style. The result is a desultory ramble of nonsense. The reader is left feeling ripped off of hard earned money and precious time. I would avoid this book at all costs!
VERY DULL!.......2007-07-08
I TRIED MARIAN KEYES BASED UPON A RECOMMENDATION. THIS WAS JUST AS BORING AS 'LAST CHANCE SALOON'. I COULDN'T BRING MYSELF TO FINISH EITHER OF THESE BOOKS. THE CHARACTERS ARE ALL SO ANNOYING, YOU DON'T GET ATTACHED TO ANYONE & THEY AREN'T BOOKS YOU CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT. I JUST CAN'T BELIEVE ALL THE GLOWING REVIEWS, THESE BOOKS ARE SO BORING.
A pleasant surprise.......2007-03-30
I was leant this book by a friend and was pleasantly surprised by how easy this books was to read. Not my usual taste in books, I was aprehensive to take the book from her, but as I began to read I found the story to be quite engaging.
However, I won't be running out to buy any Marian Keyes in the near future.
Great Read.......2007-02-12
Super fast read and a great ending - I have never read a Keyes book I didnt like!
Sushi for Beginners.......2007-01-09
Not bad, really. A little slow in the beginning, but picks up as it goes along. Neither as hilarious and pointed as Rachel's Holiday nor as poignant as Last Chance Saloon, but good nevertheless.

Miami crime reporter Britt Montero, the Cuban American with Latin passion and Yankee perseverance, gets involved with members of the Cold Case task force that's reopened an old case involving the murder of a high school senior and the rape and near-death of his girlfriend, who's now a sculptor with an unusual specialty--ice carving. Unmasking the killers requires Sunny Hartley's cooperation, but even Britt's blandishments can't convince her to help the task force bring her attackers and her boyfriend's murderers to justice. And it doesn't help any that the head of the force, who has her own reasons for pulling her men off the investigation, seems to have something romantic going with homicide cop Kendall MacDonald, Britt's old (but hardly forgotten) lover. As usual, Edna Buchanan delivers a denouement that's full of bittersweet tricks and turns in this latest outing for her popular series heroine. --Jane Adams
Book Description
Fourteen years ago, two teenagers on a Christmas Eve first date were abducted, and only one lived through the ordeal. The lone surviving victim, Sunny Hartley, became a wealthy sculptor, but the reclusive ice maiden will not talk about what happened that terrible night. Now a chance encounter in the Miami morgue between reporter Britt Montero and a petty thief, bizarrely electrocuted during the commission of a crime, has placed the still unsolved kidnapping/murder on the front burner of Sgt. Craig Burch's Cold Case Squad. But Britt and Burch are about to discover that the price of justice can be too dear to pay; that when you start turning over rocks, sometimes something truly ugly slithers out.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyed the book, hated the ending.......2007-05-18
SPOILER...DON'T READ IF YOU DON'T WANNA KNOW THE END. I can't believe she killed off this character...the one chance for Britt to really be happy has finally happened. This was a disappointing part of the book for me. Why do writers have to do this? Nevertheless it was an enjoyable read. Dang...I hated the ending.
Probably a 5 if I weren't so upset!.......2007-04-11
I kind of knew where this latest Britt Montero novel was going, but I had to read it to see if I was right. And because I knew what would happen and was so disappointed that for once my vision of Britt's future was not what I wanted it to be, I give this book a 4-4.5 instead of a 5.
This novel is filled with forboding about something deadful to come that will impact everyone in lives of Britt Montero . The overlying story itself revolves the death of a guy who may have been responsible or involved in an old rape/murder. Fourteen years ago, two young kids were abducted and left for dead. Of the two victims, one did not survive (Ricky), but Sonny, the girl did. She was raped and left for dead. As Britt begins her latest news article about the newly formed Cold Case Squad, she is plagued with issues concerning the reopening of the old murder case (reluctance of witnesses, intimidation, and several shady suspects). Sonny, the survivor, is now a reclusive artist who seems to not only be deaf in one ear, but has emotional scars, and does not seem to remember who raped her and left her for dead. As the story plays out, you see Britt's desire to find justice, while maintaining her relationships with co-workers, friends, and old/new lovers. Sometimes Buchanan's efforts to parallel the devastation occuring in New York with the lives of her characters, was hard to enjoy/. However, in the end, although there were things that I would change, I still enjoyed reading the book.
What can I say- WOW!.......2006-08-14
There is no denying that this is a dark book. But isn't reality dark for too many of us? If you are looking for a happy ending, with all plot lines tied up with a big cheery bow, this is not the book for you. If you want a bang-up shocking story with an ending that will not leave you for days, this is definantly the book you need to keep you interested.
Post Nine Eleven Crime Stories, Dateline Miami.......2005-09-05
A burglar was booby-trapped too effectively and electrocution resulted. Mr. Gomez, a jewelry store owner, had had a terrible time with burglars. Gomez is charged with second degree murder.
The reporter narrator of the book says she deals in shades of gray. The reporter, Britt Montero, runs into a detective on the cold case squad, Craig Burch, who believes the homicide victim burglar has a connection with one of his cases. She proposes a magazine piece on the cold case squad to her editor and he thinks it's a good idea.
The victim-burglar was scarred in a previous incident. The burns may have been caused by potash, the alkaline material used in making soap. Having a can of lye under a bed or near a door is a form of protection. The following evening the Gomez store is torched. The head of the cold case squad tells Craig and the other officers not to reopen the case. It is claimed other matters will yield a greater chance of successful prosecution. The members of the squad decide to do some investigation off the record and they seek Britt's help.
North Beach is still real but Britt fears the developers will change things. The cold case had two victims, one victim survived and lives in North Beach. She is an artist. When studying in Italy she became known as the ice maiden. In a cold case time works in favor of law enforcement officials, children grow up and spouses lose their fear. Nazarino, one of the police officers in the unit, is very interested in getting to know the ice maiden.
Britt and others identify some of the likely suspects, including a preacher. Someone showing remorse is tagged for the police by Britt as a possible informant. The author is careful to place Britt's near romances in a post nine eleven context. Too, the feelings of the residents of Little Havana are described as very patriotic. A number of over age men sought to volunteer for service in the wars of retaliation. It turns out the ice maiden is uncomfortable with ordinary people who don't know brutal and ugly things can happen.
The unraveling of the plot twists is very compelling. The alert reader is in for a number of surprises. It would be a shame not to read this book. The author is at the top of her form.
In a World of Sadness and Dispair.......2005-03-19
Up to this point, I loved reading and following Edna Buchanan's Strong Women Reporter Britt Montero. All I can say is that the horrible disheartening ending made me decide that I will never buy or pick up at the library another Edna Buchanan novel.
Is it so hard to have happy endings especially in the same novel were 9/11 had an important part. I am thoroughly disappointed in Ms. Buchanan...

Book Description
The debate over human Genetic Engineering (GE) is about to go mainstream. Not as a one-day wonder about cloning or a theological disagreement about embryos, but as a major political issue, driven in part by a grassroots movement of opposition.
Human Genetic Engineering is a highly readable and entertaining guide. It explains in accessible language for a popular audience the essential questions that will arise in the future debates: What is human GE? Will it work? What perspectives should we remember? Who is doing what, and why?
Customer Reviews:
Slouching toward GATTACA?.......2005-05-18
Pete Shanks has written a terrific introduction to human genetic engineering and the fraught issues it raises. The basic question he takes on: How do we get what's good out of human biotechnology, but make sure we don't wake up one morning and find ourselves in GATTACA?
"Guide to Human Genetic Engineering" covers the cloning of people and pets, "transhumanism," eugenics, sex selection, designer babies, gene doping, stem cells, and more. It welcomes beneficial uses of biotechnology, but cuts through the techno-boosterism that characterizes far too much of the current public discussion of these issues.
The book's appearance is engaging, with a table or pull quote or something else visually interesting on almost every page. The writing is top-notch -- entertaining, even funny and intermittently irreverent, but without ever losing sight of the seriousness and importance of the subject matter. The author clearly explains the technical basics, and goes beneath the surface of the political and social controversies, but not so deep as to lose "perplexed" or simply curious readers. He makes it clear what he thinks, but it's obvious that he respects what others think too.
I recommend this book very highly.
Choosing where we should go.......2005-05-17
This is a great primer and source-book on just about everything connected with human genetic engineering -- cloning, stem cells, the fertility industry, gene therapy (and how it hasn't worked), and even the history of eugenics. There's really nothing like it. Every chapter has got suggestions for further reading, there's an appendix listing all the best websites and books ... and on top of it all, Shanks can really write. Clear, concise, accessible; this is the best introduction to the subject yet.
Book Description
Over 900 intriguing images from rare decks of playing cards used between the 14th and 20th centuries: Bacchus, death, dancing dogs, players cheating at cards, royal coats of arms, stylized versions of king, queen and other face cards, hunting scenes, much more. Immediately usable graphics for illustrators and a treasury of diverting subjects.
Customer Reviews:
Sparse but beautiful.......1998-01-21
This Treasury of playing cards is sparse on text or history, but there is an abundance of beautiful pages full of playing cards to look at and admire. If you appreciate and admire the artwork of playing cards this is a wonderful book.

Tired tables, boring bookcases, cast-off chairs, and other fatigued furnishings take on a whole new life when dressed up with zingy colors and simple paint techniques. In Fantastic Furniture: Intriguing Paint Techniques & Projects, author Mickey Baskett and a team of designers show how easy it is to embellish flea-market finds or new unpainted items with color blocking, stamping, stenciling, or simple drawn motifs, or with slightly more complicated methods like decorative painting, crackling, or detailed hand-painted designs. Step-by-step instructions and patterns are included for all 30 projects. Styles range from bright and bold to softly romantic, with several kid-themed projects as well. This guide takes a very similar approach to Baskett's similarly titled Fantastic Furniture in an Afternoon, but it does not repeat actual projects; overall this one offers more variety. --Amy Handy
Book Description
Give new life to old furniture or transform unfinished pieces with quick and easy decorative techniques, such as block painting, stenciling, stamping, sponging, distressing, stippling, glazing, and design painting. The 29 projects in this full-color collection include a chair with a watermelon motif, a rocker with posies, stripes, and swirls, and a Southern Magnolias Armoire. “Recommended.”—Library Journal.
Customer Reviews:
good book for beginner.......2006-04-05
This book is great for someone with limited knowledge of painted furniture. The pictures are nice, covering both the older flowery country style and the new funky multi color style. It is short on in depth details of paints, supplies, and preperation. But there is enough info to get you through a project. For those that cant draw there are some patters for flowers ans such. The projects presented are inspiring and unique not cheap or tacky looking. The book does not cover classical faux paint techniques that could be combined into the projects presented. If you need that type of information I highly recommend The Art of Painted Finish by Isabel O-Neil.
A Great 'How-to' Book for beginners.......2000-06-10
The projects in this book are fun and eye-catching. It contains a broad range of do-it-yourself furniture painting, as well as sponging, stamping and stenciling. There's sure to be at least one project you'll want to try.

A fine introduction.......2000-04-16
The subject of this volume, crisply handled, is a magnificent one, as any reader who has seen a great house will attest. The handling of the subject, smoothly touched, is a testament to clear, concise journalism.
Pretty pictures but no content.......2000-01-12
This book has lovely photos but absolutly no depth. It is really not much more than a magazine article and definitly not for anyone who has a serious interest in the period.

A bit outdated.......1999-01-07
Not bad but unfortunately, the book isn't up-to-date with some series. For example, the book indicates that LA Law is still screening at the time of publication(although it ceased to screen in 1994 and it didn't mention the second series of Murder One.
Still, not a bad read for any TV addict like myself.

Great book, but leaves out one major aspect..........2005-07-06
I first started listening to Queen back around 1987, having a copy of "The Game" that a cousin gave me. But it wasn't until 1992 that I became a fan, and I bought this book to learn about the band. It's got a lot of good information and pictures, and I recommend it to any Queen fan.
There is one aspect of the band that isn't touched on in the book, and that is their debauchery! Even though I've been a fan for almost 15 years, only recently did I learn that these guys were real hellraisers! I'd read a magazine article after "Innuendo" came out that mentioned the wild release party they held for it, but I had no idea how hard these guys partied. Sick and twisted!
But anyway, that one, minor, misgiving aside, I recommend this book. I wish there were more books available on Queen.
Must Have!!.......2003-06-21
I bought this book back in 1992 when I first became a Queen fanatic. There are some great pictures and quotes, along with kind of an abbreviated history of the band. It concludes with a list of all of Queen's music releases up until 1992. It is a beautiful book that is well worth the money. You will look at it again and again.
Absolutely fab!!.......1999-04-26
This Queen book is absolutely fabulous! It is perfect in nearly every way. It is basically a visual timeline of the band, from its subtle beginnings to its flashy end (or is it?). The pictures alone are worth the price, but the ingenius quotes from band members simply makes this one of the best Queen books available. Look for Freddie in his Superman shirt!
A Rock n' Roll extravaganza for the masses........1999-04-20
This book brings you right along side the band and their legendary music. If you like queen, this is a must have for your library!
