GOVERNMENT INVOLVEMENT.......2007-07-28
Not to bad of a book, so buy the least expensive book available. Some of the governmenr stuff is true, I wonder how the author found out. It takes a little getting use to his writing style. His interpretation of the end times should make one think about reading the bible and shoring up they faith in Jesus. Whether it will happen in the fashion that he wrote it . . . don't know what to say.
The ending was weak. Several chapters used to built up the coming of the great decite; takes only two paragraphs to describe the closing of the gate.
The Ahriman Gate.......2007-07-09
It was a page turner for me. I love the theories and ideas that are mentioned. I enjoyed it and passed the book on to other family members, so we could discuss the theories. It makes life interesting to speculate on aliens, etc. I look forward to the next great read of this nature. Loved the book. Highly recommend it.
Unusual story.......2007-02-22
I really enjoyed this book. the second half was really difficult to put down, and the story is all too plausible, considering current work in transgenics. This book will not be soon forgotten.
Not bad! BUT Could have been better........2006-10-06
I'm not and avid reader. I enjoy reading but it takes me awhile to finish a book. The Ahriman Gate took me just two days to finish reading this 400 page. A new personal best! This book just seemed to dig it's claws into me and not let go. That having been said, parts of the plot of the book left me scratching my head wondering "where are the authors going with all this".
Good points:
Very interesting concept, entertaining and generally well written. The (human) characters are well developed and believable.
Bad Points:
The author obviously wanted to combine all the popular myths of our time (UFO's, alien visitors, Bigfoot, MIB, secret societies, bible prophecy, etc) into one story. But all these elements, instead of giving the story depth, make the story a little "poogy" and lugubrious in places... Too many threads to weave into a proper story "cloth". I think that if the authors had focused more on character development, had a little more action and moved the plot along a little faster this would have been a great book.
Conclusion:
If your not religious or don't believe in God or Jesus then this book is most certainly not for you. When ever a character is in serious trouble they call out for divine help. There are at least 25+ direct bible passages quoted by characters. If you think that this would make you feel irritated/uncomfortable then give this book a pass. However, if you'd like to see the good guy empowered by a deep faith in the divine put boot to evil butt, then this book is for you.
P.S. You can also get the Ebook in a PDF format for $8.00 from his web sight. Good deal if you ask me.
Transgenetics: Are You Ready For This?.......2006-04-16
After authoring two memorable non-fiction books on spiritual warfare, Tom Horn unites with his wife Nita, exploding on the fictional scene with the haunting and powerful The Ahriman Gate.
I commend Tom for what he was trying to accomplish with Ahriman: that is, through the use of a fictional story, to introduce the reader to the frightening recent developments within the world of transgenetics, biotechnology, and nanotechnology through a Christian worldview. This worldview holds that the inspired Word of God should be used as a framework and foundation to understanding the past as well as what is to come.
There is no more desirable result than to have the reader understand the sordid world of transgenetics through the lens of God's Word. Throughout the dialogue in the story, many important topics are breached which will normally not be touched in the pulpit, such as:
* Nephilim - What lessons can be learned about the offspring of the fallen angels and human women?
* Transmogrification - The ability of angels to manipulate matter and energy, and to shapeshift into human form.
* Aliens - Is there life on other planets, or are these "visitors" simply the Biblical fallen angels and evil spirits masquerading as "grays?"
* Alien abductions - Do victims of abductions actually physically experience what they describe in abduction accounts, or are they the unwitting pawns of evil spirits who, through remote viewing, implant thoughts, images, and experiences into their minds?
* The stones of fire - What was the Lord referring to in Ezekiel chapter 28 when he said Lucifer was moving about in the "stones of fire?"
Those who have read Tom's previous books on evil spirits and spiritual warfare know that he is an expert in the field. He deftly incorporates this knowledge throughout The Ahriman Gate to explain what the characters were experiencing and the entities with whom they were engaging.
I highly recommend all of Tom Horn's work: the non-fiction Spiritual Warfare: The Invisible Invasion and The Gods Who Walk Among Us, and now the fictional title The Ahriman Gate.

Exemplary Nero Wolfe mystery.......2006-11-10
A murder conviction; a missing person; a beautiful woman; even a distraught family - but Nero Wolfe puts the pieces together and again solves the mystery puzzle. One of Rex Stout's most complicated and satisfying Nero Wolfe mysteries.
Getting better -- much better.......2006-08-16
This is my second Nero Wolfe book, and I'm getting the message. Wolfe's an eccentric; Archie is someone I'd love to meet; the stories carry me along. The denouement in this book is not exactly shocking, but I'm getting into the rhythm of Stout's writing and plan to keep going with more stories until I'm hooked -- or not.
Great Stuff!.......2006-05-19
Rex Stout was an amazing writer. His characters are great. The dialogue and action are crisp. And, where did he get the ideas for his stories? Some of the plotlines really draw you in. Take this book, one of Stout's best. In Might As Well Be Dead, the great detective Nero Wolfe is asked to locate a young man missing for over a decade--who turns out to have just been convicted of murder. Wolfe has to put his considerable mental prowess to work to overturn the conviction, along with his helpers--the irrepressible Archie Goodwin, and Saul, Fred, Orrie, and Jimmy. One of Wolfe's colleagues doesn't make it to the end of the story, which makes it personal for Wolfe. The cops are breathing down their necks. And, just to add to the mix, Archie falls in love with the attractive woman pining for the man on death row. Great stuff!
Another Outstanding Story.......2005-03-31
The CD edition of this just came out, and leaves us all begging for more. Michael Pritchard's restrained but agile style once again makes this one of the best stories from Rex Stout.
You can tell it's the 1950s, and that to some extent Stout is reacting to Mickey Spillane's popularity. He has Archie and Saul doing some things here that are downright over-the-top - perhaps more so than in any other Wolfe story.
A nice transition: the beneficiaries of Wolfe's services here are actually rather depressed. You sure do wish we had Prozac back in the early 50s. However, Wolfe serves up a happy ending which restores all our optimistic expectations.
What if your client fires you? Nero simply says, well, pay me a fee of $50,000.00 and we'll call it square. Of course, when the client balks, Wolfe then enumerates all the equitable theories of why Wolfe earned the fee and is not blackmailing the reluctant client into paying.
One constant element of Wolfe: he believes in earning his fees, regardless of his immobility. And he earns it here, for sure. You'll love this one...
Search for a missing son turns into a murder case.......2002-03-25
James R. Herrold threw his son Paul out of the family business 11 years ago - unjustly, it turns out, and he now wishes to set the account straight. When Wolfe and Archie begin advertising for a P.H. who's now known to be innocent, though, it attracts Purley Stebbins, wanting to know why they're interested in Peter Hays, who's on trial for 1st degree murder. Archie opts to look at Hays, just on the chance - and seeing his face in defiance at the jury's guilty verdict, with life in it, sees the kid in Herrold's college photo.
Albert Freyer, Hays' attorney, comes to Wolfe, who breaks his rule of discretion and makes common cause with him. Freyer's never seen Hays with any life in his face, and knew nothing of his past; when they first met, Hays had said he might as well be dead, being given over to despair. Archie, Wolfe, and Freyer believe he's innocent (partly because *somebody* followed Archie to court, and it sure wasn't Hays).
Hays is supposed to have shot Michael Molloy, the husband of the woman he loved, but he's been standing mute. Mrs. Molloy couldn't divorce him (this was 1956) even though he was maltreating her. An anonymous man had called Hays up with a tale of Molloy starting to beat up Selma, and the cops were tipped off to the shooting by an anonymous caller. Hmm.
Hays hasn't got enough of a personal life for the frameup to be personal, and Selma Malloy appears to have no outside interest (as well as an alibi). Archie, therefore, goes to work questioning her, partly because she used to be Molloy's secretary, and can give them a line on any interesting business dealings he may have had. (The current secretary is far less appealing to him.) The first scrap is a safe deposit box, location unknown, in the name of Richard Randall - if they can find it.
The usual supporting players are deployed to the fullest: Saul, Fred, and Orrie (naturally), and even the more rare Johnny Keems. They have the joyous task of sorting through Molloy's associates and poking into holes, trying to stir something up without being bitten.

Customer Reviews:
Informative.......2007-01-09
I was a new step mom when I bought this book and found it informative and helpful.
Straight to the point..........2002-02-11
This fairly brief book doesn't spend a lot of time on the philosophy of stepmothering, but instead, gets right to the practical, nitty-gritty information that the reader can use immediately. The real-life stepmom stories that appear on almost every page are both enlightening and inspiring, spoken directly from the heart.
The book covers many issues, ranging from second weddings to money to the ex-wife. The "Tips for Merging New Families" aren't new, but it can help sometimes to take a very basic look at how you're approaching your role. There are also several helpful chapters on discipline.
The "Stepchild's Point of View" chapter is helpful, too, and and full of insight straight from the kids. The book also touches on holidays, vacations, stepsiblings and more. While it doesn't spend a lot of time on any one topic, the broad range it covers provides some quick guidance for the new or inexperienced stepmom.
The "Survival Tactics" are up to-the-point and a good reminder of how we're responsible for our own behavior and feelings. You'll probably also learn something from the questions and answers at the end of the book.
A Book Lacking In Content.......2001-03-23
I found this book somewhat disappointing. It lacked content, and neglected a lot of the WHYs in a blended family. I left this book feeling unfulfilled. However, _Keys to Successful Step-Mothering_ does contain some good content on coping skills and would be a good read for the busy mom or stepmother. This book is a good companion to other, more in depth, step parenting books, but I found it doesn't stand well on its own.
Good Advice For Any Stepmom.......1999-05-02
This is great resource for stepmothers. It has many helpful suggestions about dealing with blended families in healthy ways and the importance of keeping your marriage a priority. It dispels myths about stepparenting and encourages stepmoms to set expectations at a realistic level.

This best-selling cookbook from the culinary director of Chateau Ste. Other features include a guide to food and wine pairing, tips on the well-equipped kitchen, and color photography throughout.
Customer Reviews:
Every recipe I've tried has been stellar!.......2000-03-24
I can't say enough nice things about this slim littlecookbook. First, every recipe I've tried has been stellar -- and I'veused the recipes with several dinner parties to rave reviews. Second, I appreciate the organization. Sarich classifies every recipe by seasonability of ingredents, cost of ingredients, and time needed for preparation...very helpful features that I wish more cookbooks shared. Third, I like the lay-flat spiral binding, which makes it handy to use. Fourth, the presentation and photography are beautiful. Interestingly, I've bragged up book to several out-of-town guests, and they've purchased the book (even though they don't live in the Pacific Northwest). Additionally, the indices at the back of the book include wine and food/herbs/spices pairing, wine descriptions, and useful lists of ingredients to have on hand depending on what type of cuisine you tend to cook.

Beginning with the earliest available information (6th century B.C.) through our most contemporary designs, this book offers the reader heretofore unattainable information and an exquisite collection of illustrations. Many of the bottles pictured are currently available to collectors. These wonderful photographs are further enhanced by a concise history covering perfume, cologne, scent, atomizer and fan-stopper bottles from Northern Europe, American, Bohemia and Japan. Over 270 patent illustrations are presented as part of a comprehensive chapter on commercial bottles. In addition a directory of perfume makers and scents and a useful price guide are included. Special emphasis has been given to bottles by Lalique as well as those made in Czechoslovakia. Glass, porcelain and silver are some of the materials discussed in the creation of scent containers. Rounding out the book are chapters on Dime-Store novelty bottles and tips on care and presentation of scent bottles. This book is unquestionably one-of-a-kind, appealing not only to the collector but to anyone who has ever experienced the magic of what these special bottles have to offer in addition to the fragrances they contain.

A perfume bottle collector's wish book.......2002-03-08
This book is full of lush color pictures of bottles many of us will never be able to afford but now we know what to look for! I really am glad I purchased this book and I have referred to it many times. I have made purchase based on information and discovered favorite styles of bottles. I understand that there is a newer version of this book and I have not seen that book. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who collects perfume bottles. It is a great book to sit and look at and wish "..if only......."

Customer Reviews:
Great book on traditional upholstery.......2006-06-23
This is a great book for beginners as well as advanced upholsterers. I found interesting that it is very extensive on traditional techniques and it is also very explicative of each one of them. It has very good explanaitions as well as coloured pics and drawings. I didn't give it 5 stars because it is superficial on covering modern techniques, the ones required for a professional business. I'm an upholstery student at a community college, and it has been a great reference for me. But I had to learn the time saving tricks with my teachers. This is a great reference if bought with the Complete Course, written by the same author.

Two cups of Communism and a tablespoon of Freud..........2004-07-12
"The more important the shadows are, the more value and meaning the film will have." --B.B.
As with other installments of the Conversations With Filmmakers series of books, the themes that the director holds dear pop up in several of the interviews. The two persistant subjects in this book are those "great" ideas of the 20th century: Communism and Freudianism. Bertolucci wouldn't be Bertolucci without these two influences.
These interviews span over 30 years of Bertolucci's career and include discussions of some of his movies that aren't currently released on DVD, like The Conformist and La Luna. The most current film discussed is 1998's Besieged.
My favorite chapter was the conversation between Bertolucci and fellow filmmaker Wim Wenders from 1981 in which they essentially predict the coming popularity of reality TV.
While it would probably be best to actually view the films first, this book would serve as a good introduction to Bertolucci. The book will be most valuable, however, to those familiar with his work already and those who want to know what makes Bertolucci tick.
