Book Description
As girls growing up in Clare Valley, Australia, Anna, Bett, and Carrie Quinlan were childhood singing stars known as The Alphabet Sisters. The unbridled enthusiasm of their flamboyant grandmother Lola was the glue that held them together. As adults, though, the women haven’t spoken in years–ever since Bett’s fiancé deserted her to marry the younger Carrie. Now Lola is turning eighty and she is determined to reunite the girls for a blowout bash. And no one ever says no to Lola.
Bett, who fled to London after the scandal of losing her fiancé, is hesitant to face her sisters and her hometown–especially since she has yet to find another man. Sophisticated Anna, the eldest sister, isn’t too keen on the prospect either, though she’s secretly grateful for any excuse to leave her crumbling marriage behind in Sydney. And Carrie, who remained in Clare Valley, is perhaps the most apprehensive. Her marriage–the nominal cause of the sisters’ estrangement–is also on the rocks. Was she wrong to have followed her heart and run off with Bett’s fiancé?
When Lola shares her special request, that the girls stage a musical she has written, their short visit becomes a much longer commitment. As they are forced to spend more time together, the sisters must confront the pain that lingers between them. Preconceptions and misunderstandings are slowly put aside and the three find themselves gradually, irresistibly enveloping one another once again–until an unexpected turn of events changes everything in ways none of them could have ever imagined. . . .
Layering the lighthearted antics of small-town life with a heartbreaking story of loyalty lost and found, The Alphabet Sisters is an unforgettable story of two generations of women who learn that being true to themselves means being true to one another.

Family feuds.......2007-05-02
Three sisters are reunited after a space of three years where there was no contact between them. The girls who used to work as a singing trio around the country towns as children, had an enormous row when Carrie, the youngest and prettiest, married the fiance of Bett, the middle sister, and even Anna, the eldest of the trio, got into a serious yelling match with the other two when they criticised her husband and her marriage. With the formerly close sisters at loggerheads like this, it falls to their grandmother, Lola, to devise a plan to reunite them. Anna is by now working as a voice over actress in Sydney, missing a husband who has taken himself off with his girlfriend, and living with her seven year old daughter, Ellen who had suffered terrible facial scarring after a dog attack. Bett is working at a publishing house in London while Carrie stayed with her new husband, working in her parent's motel in the South Australian countryside. Lola is an outrageous extrovert who virtually raised the girls while their parents ran the motel, and who thinks up the plan to get the girls back together by writing a play about the real life visit to the town by General Douglas MacArthur during WW2. The plan works but only after a lot of drama and tears, It's a "chick lit" book with a difference, with an equal mixture of laughter and tears.
Loved it!.......2007-02-17
I thought this book was really good. I couldn't put it down from the start. I am giving it 4 stars because I thought parts of it were a little predictible but the ending wasn't at all. I thought the characters were very good and Lola was just fabulous! She makes us all wish we had a grandmother or "really great-gran" like her!
A-Z of emotion.......2006-08-04
From someone who has siblings, has lived in small country towns and who has experienced the death of someone pivotal to my life, this book is 100% real. The author is clearly writing from personal experience which has obviously been painful, joyful, tedious, delightful and full of adventure and it shows.
This book is full of characters that each have a fascinating story worthy of their own dedicated novel. Such is the depth that the author has put into each character and the believability she has created.
I am grateful to this wonderful author for making me laugh, reminisce and for producing the cathartic crying session that helped me with my own grieving process.
I can't wait for the sequels.
I Disagree............2006-05-23
It has taken me a month to read this book and I'm still not quite done. I thought I'd love this book because it is Chick Lit and I love Marian Keyes and the like, but this book is very dull. The story of the three sisters was okay, but that's just it....no snappy, witty dialogue; just an average book that has been done before. I will finish it because I finish almost everything I start unless it is really dreadful, but I can't wait to get onto something else.
Wonderful Book! I Highly Recommend It!.......2006-04-27
I found myself hooked from the first page. The characters are well written and the trials they go through are heart-wrenching. I do not have sisters so I really didn't have much to compare the book to but I must say, I loved it! I found myself crying and laughing throughout. Please, do yourself a favor and buy it, it is worth every penny and more; then buy it for every woman you know, they will appreciate it! I have never read any books by Monica McInerney before this one, but I plan to get every one of them!

Early Nevil Shute.......1997-09-04
MARAZAN was one of the very early Nevil Shute stories, from his days as a full-time engineer. It still has the Shute character and prose style, but not the polish of his later books. MARAZAN is written as an adventure story, set in pre-WWII England. This is not really a book I would recommend to a random reader, but a fan of Nevil Shute would enjoy it as I did.

Excellent.......2006-11-11
This is an excellent resource for rootworkers. The author compiled a lot of great information on Moses including history, drawings, and references to biblical sources. There are seals and spells for many purposes and a wonderful chapter called "The Great Voodoo Man of the Bible". I highly reccomend this book.
Book Description
How did Australia achieve such phenomenal success with its wine? Historian and critically acclaimed wine writer Nicholas Faith provides an in-depth account of the growth and international boom of Australia’s wine industry, and describes how the country’s wines have risen to the point of becoming the world’s number one choice. This is the first, and very best, book to chart Australia’s amazing success story.

VIN EXTRA-ORDINAIRE.......2003-07-15
.
"Liquid Gold" will become essential reading for anybody wanting to gain a detailed understanding of Australian wine. It looks closely at the history of the Ozzie wine scene and the trail-blazing vignerons who have elevated this country's wine to world-class status. Nicholas Faith's thesis is that Australians have underplayed the importance of "regionalism". He then demonstrates that each Australian wine district has very distinctive and attractive attributes.
This book is the first comprehensive study of the Australian wine business written by a non-Australian. Faith is an Englishman with expert credentials. He made his name with The Winemasters, the classic 1978 study of Bordeaux. As a contributing editor to the London Financial Times Faith combines a knowledge of wine as one of life's essential joys together with a sharp commercial understanding of the wine industry.
The history of the Australian wine scene is covered in more detail by other authors, but Faith, with his international perspective puts the last 200 years of development in a very relevant, topical and balanced context. Faith's stated purpose in writing the book is "an attempt to explain the success of Australians in the international wine market since the early 1990s". For those readers familiar with the early pioneers and the renaissance of our industry in the 1960s, it may be tempting to skate over the 275 pages it takes Faith to get to the current era.
With an Englishman's appreciation of pedigree, Faith reminds us there are now dynastic Australian wine families eg the Smiths and Wynns, with up to five generations of viticultural, oenological and wine marketing skills behind them. Interestingly, members of these families are still at the cutting edge of wine innovation.
Faith looks at the very topical issue of the two opposing trends in our industry. With the recent large-scale mergers and international rationalisations eg Rosemount/Penfolds and Hardys/Constellation- there is a risk that Australian wine making will become "commodified". Some critics (particularly the French) argue that industrial scale wine production (even at a high technical standard) leads to bland and characterless wine. The discounting power of supermarket liquor buyers and the squeeze they are putting on the growers and winemakers (both large and small) is seen as the biggest threat to our industry's continued success.
Thankfully, there are still the innovative smaller-scale producers who are prepared to experiment and "push the envelope" when it comes to making their vines and wines sing and dance for our pleasure. Faith reminds us of the increasingly important role of estate-grown (individual vineyard) and "hand-made" wines. He assures us Australian producers will continue to carve out valuable niches at this premium end of the market.
Faith is optimistic that the most of these competent "tin shed" wine makers with access to good fruit will survive, despite the increasing dominance of the Big Five wine makers and the pressure of retail liquor discounting. He sees cellar door, mail order and direct sales to restaurants as the key. When coupled with wine regions presented as attractive tourism destinations, the identity and survival of the small labels must be assured. In support of this, Faith tells us of the habit of the serious French wine consumer who likes to buy wine direct from the producer.
The most provocative passage in Faith's book looks at the relative economic power between the grape grower and the wine maker.
"The whole of Australia is now coming to resemble Champagne, another region of blended wines produced by firms that are renowned for the value of their brands but - with a few exceptions - can supply only a small proportion of the grapes they require."
On first reading, you might think Faith has seen too many bottles on the shelves of Sainsbury's bearing the label "Product of South-Eastern Australia". However, statistics are on Faith's side. Recent numbers from the Australian Wine Industry Directory (Wine Titles 2003) show that the Top 22 winemakers own or lease only 20% of the total area of Australia's vineyards. To the outsider, the power would seem to be in the hands of the grower but, increasingly, the winemakers apply a rigorous grading system when buying fruit, and will reject grapes that are of inferior quality.
A close reading of the book reveals a few annoying typos and oversights. One example is the name of Penfold's former Chief Viticulturist in South Australia: David Murdock. Faith spells it Murdoch.
Late in the book, he tells us that the Margaret River region of Western Australia is the only region in the world that was recommended geologically as having soil-types suitable for wine-grape growing - this was before the first vine was planted. However, in an earlier chapter we are told that the founders of the Barossa Valley region in South Australia in the 1830s also consulted a mineralogist before committing to their vineyard plantings.
Faith demonstrates that terroir and regionalism does underpin much of the qualities that we see in Australian wine. He reminds us that Brian Croser's bold move into the Adelaide Hills and Andrew Pirie's rigorous selection of Pipers Brook was driven by a belief that the soils and climate characteristics of Burgundy could be found in parts of Australia. The emergence of great local pinots is a result of this combination of science and passion.
One familiar aspect of both the earliest and current generation of Australian vignerons is the large number of medical doctors who got themselves involved with grapes and wine. Faith tells us about the pragmatic and pioneering doctors of the 1800s who grew grapes and recommended wine as a health-giving tonic. The modern generation of winemaking medicos seems to be more inspired by the need for relief from the pain of taxation. Either way the restorative power of Australian wine is firmly based.
When you finish reading "Liquid Gold" you may be obliged to lift a glass and thank Mr Faith for writing such an informative, provocative and entertaining book.

fluff.......2005-10-28
This book is great if you want to know what kind of rigging each
ship had. You will not get how many crewman it took to sail each ship unless its a galley then you can figure it out by how many oars it had. On some you will get the tonnage of a particular ship but not always. You don't get any idea the cargo it was able to hold in tonnage or what type of cargo it mainly shipped. Nothing about what kind of weaponary ie cannon
6pounder,12pounder etc. I did like the pictures. I did learn about ships that I never knew existed. Thats why I said fluff
in the title.
A Treasury of Sail.......2005-01-08
The author presents a history of sailing ships through illustrations and descriptions that span 2-3 pages. He breaks the subject matter between long ships and round ships and presents the ships in chronological order from ancient galleys to clippers.
The content of the description seems to be drawn from personal experience, where possible, and various research sources. The author does use a lot of naval terminology for rigging and ship structure that may leave the young or unversed in the dark. The real glory of the book is not, however, the entertaining prose, but the drawings of the ships. The art ranges from mostly black ink renderings of the ships to a few water colors (at least in my hardcover copy) that are simply beautiful pieces.
If you are lucky enough to find a decent early copy (like my 1924 copy) jump on it. Or, if you are interested in seeing what various sailing ships looked like, any copy will do.
P-)
Excellent illustrations.......2000-03-30
If you're looking for a good interpretation of excellent illustrations, then this is your book! The illustrations are par none, but the writing lacks substance. Much of the descriptions are but interpretations, some based on fact, but many imagined. Readers looking for a very broad overview will enjoy this book. Those looking for detail about the ship or about the history of the time-period would do better with something else.
Delightful reading for enthousiast and history buff alike.......1999-09-27
Essentially a reprint of a book published originally in 1924, the book manages to have both modern prose and a dated (nonpajorative in this case) perspective. Because the author is chronologically close to his subject, his focus on the meat of the matter is excellent. Complemented by excellent illustrations from Gordon Grant, Culver's prose flows forth, at once detailed, humourous, and filled with romance. An easy read that will probably be enjoyed by enthousiast, history buff, and devout non-fiction reader alike. We can only hope that this book does not go out of print for another 75 years.

1001 Designs for Whittling and Woodcarving.......2000-04-19
Without any review, I never had a chance to really know if this is the book that I need. Unfortunately, it is not what I was looking for.
However, the book itself is OK for beginners who are looking for simple objects like Christmas tree ornaments, butter and cookie molds, chip-carved pieces, tramp-carving, gouge decoration, silhouettes and more.
For experienced carvers, challenging projects like toys, weather vanes, signs, noisemakers, musical instruments, cigar-store, animals and humans, caricatures, carved jigsaw puzzles and more.

Book Description
As a teacher of colored pencil workshops, Gary Greene sees his students buying watercolor pencils "by the truckload." Problem is, they haven't known what to do with them--until now. In this much-requested book, Greene shows artists how to achieve a variety of different effects in this fascinating medium.
From loose, watercolor-like washes to precise airbrush looks, the author, along with six guest artists, shows readers how to master the medium in 18 complete painting demonstrations.
Customer Reviews:
Very Helpful.......2007-04-28
This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to learn the nuances of using watercolor pencils. The author's illustrations show the remarkable results that can be attained with this medium.
I especially want to comment on the series of cherries, which other reviewers have referred to. The cherries are the most useful and important part of the book, in my opinion, and the feature that distinguishes this book from others in this field. By repeating the same subject (the cherries) over and over, but as painted by different techniques, the author demonstrates the variety of achievable effects. I was surprised just how different each set of cherries looked when painted in the various techniques. Those demonstrations, along with other instruction in the book, make for valuable instruction. This is a great book for anyone who wants to become skilled in this medium.
Excellent techniques.......2007-04-08
I don't understand the complaint with the cherries by some of the other reviewers. Gary is just introducing the reader step-by-step to the techniques using cherrys as the example AT FIRST. There are 13 cherry techniques covered over 20 pages, but there are 128 pages in the book. Hmmmm, could there be more? WHY YES! As a matter of fact there is.
He then proceeds to use these techniques on other images that DO NOT repeat themselves. He covers stuff like portraits, animals, landscapes, textures, flowers and a bit of the abstract. There is a large variety. AND WAIT, theres more! He also demonstrates the varying techniques step-by-step with these other various non-repeating works of art! So, don't be fooled by the complaints about cherrys. It's just covered in Chapter 2 and then he goes into more depth in all the other chapters. (Chapter 1 is the usual materials tools and color charts.)
Okay, so it is not for beginners. You should know how to draw well, and be confident in your drawing. You know... be able to create the illusion of 3D on 2D. Or else you'll be one of those reviewers who says "I'm disapointed in this book, I expected more."
Painting with water-soluble colored pencils.......2007-01-04
This book was a gift so I have no knowledge of the contents other than that the gift recipient was pleased with the content and found it helpful in learning to paint with watercolors.
Overall a great introduction to the medium.......2006-03-25
As an experienced artist but a beginner in this particular medium, I found this book to be very informative. I noticed that some of the reviewers complained about the cherry paintings, but I found them to be quite helpful. I enjoyed seeing how one subject looked painted several different ways. Though some of the sample step-by-step paintings are pretty substandard, a few are quite good (such as the one of the three parrots). Though probably not the most inspiring art book in the world, this is the best book I have found as an introduction to water soluble colored pencils.
Lack luster book.......2000-04-11
I find it hard to explain why I was so disappointed in this book. Perhaps it is the redundancy of subjects(cherries), yet the cherry part was interesting in the fact that it compared a same subject with different techniques. Still it lacks something.
The other examples of pictures that were in the book were overwhelming for me. It is as if I were already expected to know how to draw the pictures. I did not find there to be enough step by step instruction.
I also have another book by Gary Greene- Textures. That book is far more inspiring and instructional than this one is.
This book just does not whet my appetite for watercolor pencils enough to make me want to race to my pencils and start drawing right away. Instead, it just makes me sigh, and put the tin away for yet another day.
This topic could be covered in a far more inspirational and effective way than was done in this book. And the examples should be more exciting and motivating than they are.
Customer Reviews:
Great instruction and inspiring tips!.......2007-03-22
This is one of the "keepers". Kristy has done an excellent job here in not only instruction, but in very informative tips and techniques. Saves the new artist allot of time in getting right to the point and avoiding common mistakes. Kristy's book is highly recommended and I'd have given it more than 5 stars if I could have!
Drawing And Painting With Colored Pencil.......2006-11-06
Drawing And Painting With Colored Pencilery good reference book, I was very happy
A Waste of money and time.......2006-08-24
There are many other books available on this subject and they are all better than this one. There is nothing to be gained from reading this book. Forget it!
Stunning Examples.......2006-06-29
The illustrations for the techniques are Kutch's own colored pencil artwork. Her flowers are stunning and if I ever achieve a drawing on the level of her poppies or the morning glories, I'll be very happy.
Unfortunately, I struggled with some of the directions, bogging down over the art terms and special tools that I don't yet have. I think I'd benefit from rereading this book after I experiment more and stock in some of the supplies (special papers, ball burnisher, citrus thinner, etc.).
The techniques are shown in 5 or 6 steps with the illustration progressing as she describes the colors used. Most of the examples are flowers or fruit, but a few landscapes round it out.
The first 49 pages deal with regular colored pencils, then the rest of the book goes on to watercolor pencils and the techniques for those.
Be Advised it is much to do about Watersoluble Pencils...........2006-03-23
This is a wonderful book, don't get me wrong, however I expected it to relate more to colored pencils by themselves. The first section does, then it goes on to a much larger section on watersoluble pencils and the final section is devoted to using them in tandem. If you are interested in using them in tandem then by all means, this book should be on your shelf! The text is precise and easy to follow, the artwork is wonderful, to say the least.
Customer Reviews:
Not a First Art Book, But a Great First Colored Pencils Book.......2005-09-26
An excellent small book, especially valuable because it teaches so much without costing a bundle. Fascinating section on learning to paint anything with just three colors and black: this is invaluable for outdoor sketching, when you don't want to take the time to find just that shade of green, and hauling all hundred colors would be a drag anyway.
This is meant for the person who can already draw or paint, but wishes to learn this particular medium.

My complaint is with the Akron Public Library Bookstore who sold me this product. The condition of the book was outrageous. The book REEKED with cigarette smoke and it was damaged at the spine and written in. To add insult to injury, the book, which I paid shipping for came with postage due! I seem to recall having paid for shipping. I do understand that when you buy a book second hand you can expect some surprises. Here I went to Oz looking for the Wizard and found the bumbling old snake oil salesman. I will never order from this particular vendor again.

It is okay.......2007-08-03
It is okay. It has a lot in it but it has not given me what I wanted. I like the way Ann Kullberg illustrates her books. She doesn't have mixed media but with colored pencil in itself she makes it very visible in what to do. This book is a good book but not as exciting as some others.
Entering a competitive field.......2007-08-03
I was disappointed in this book for two reasons. Firstly the mixed media exercises use other mediums more as underpainting than as combinations with colored pencil to create new effects. By comparison, see Mary Todd Beam's demonstrations with colored pencil in mixed media in "Celebrate Your Creative Self." The results from Hershberger and Huff still look like colored pencil, not mixed media. In my view, this means it misses out as a mixed media book. How does it fare, then, as a colored pencil book?
I find the end results of the exercises in this book rather flat compared to works by established colored pencil artists, and this is my second reason. The book begins with some promising ideas, but adding other mediums should enhance, not muddy the result as I feel they do here.
The colored pencial medium has burgeoned into an extremely professional field in the last ten years or so, and this makes it a highly competitive market where new publications are concerned. The authors of this book have hard acts to follow, and this inevitably affects any assessment of its merits. The competition includes artist/instructors like Cecile Baird, Bet Borgeson and particularly Ann Kullberg, arguably the best of all colored pencil artists.
In fact, on Kullberg's website, even unsuccessful entries in her 2007 juried competition have a "zing' that is somehow missing in the illustrations in this book. The explanation that clarity is inevitably lost in simplifying the step-by-step lessons may be fair enough, but I suggest you compare these instructions with those on the Kullberg website. Although using colored pencil alone, Kulberg's exercises nevertheless achieve radiant, light-filled results.
Perhaps minor quibbles, but the exercises are not numbered (for easy reference) and the number is incorrectly given as 52 in the subtitle on the cover.
'Creative Colored Pencil Workshop'is beautifully bound and the authors undoubtedly convey a passion for their medium, but I find that the book comes nowhere near the high standard of books by the artist/authors mentioned above. For the higher price, I really expected something more.
Beautiful Illustrations.......2007-05-25
Beautiful paintings by the authors and other artists strike a nice balance between a how-to book and a must-have for sheer enjoyment. I uploaded two images so you could see into the book.
Herschberger and Huff share their expertise on an expansive range of materials making this an excellent entry point for beginners and great fun for experimental artists. In one demonstration, or technically two I guess, they both paint from the same reference photo, but make entirely different painting choices. Witty humor highlights their rapport as the two artists work together and play off one another.
I particularly liked the silver leaf demonstration and how it was used in a realistic, not decorative, painting. Can't wait to try that!
Eye Opener.......2007-05-04
I always thought colored pencils were for the grandkids. Wow, I read the entire book in one sitting and I can't wait to try some of the new ways of using not only colored pencils, but other media. Thank you to the authors for opening my eyes to new things.

Floydian Freak.......2000-06-18
I've been a Floyd freak forever, and this book is as close to excellent as you can get. For non readers of music, it not only has chord names, it actually shows how to play the chords. Most songbooks don't do that anymore. You usually need a chord encyclopedia to learn how to play them. The only reason "Momentary Lapse of Reason" didn't get 5 stars is because most of the words to "Dogs of War" are missing. "On the Turning Away" is superb, and easy to play for a beginner or a 30 year amateur guitar player like me. Shine on.
No More Turning Away.......2000-04-12
Well, I started playing guitar about 3 years ago. So I realized that I love Pink Floyd songs (that was a little bit late when talking about a band that old!)! No more Joe Satriani's, Steve Vai's, Eric Clapton's, Rolling Stones' songs! David Gilmour's melodic guitar is what I think the maximum of playing guitar! On The Turning Away song has a great solo just like also Sorrow! No matter how good guitar player you are, how techniques you apply, how old or new your guitar instrument is, you always will want to play like David Gilmour: right notes in the right time! And this songbook (as the others of Pink Floyd) will help you a lot! Have a big fun, pal!
