Anne Tyler's The Amateur Marriage is not so much a novel as a really long argument. Michael is a good boy from a Polish neighborhood in Baltimore; Pauline is a harum-scarum, bright-cheeked girl who blows into Michael's family's grocery store at the outset of World War II. She appears with a bloodied brow, supported by a gaggle of girlfriends. Michael patches her up, and neither of them are ever the same. Well, not the same as they were before, but pretty much the same as everyone else. After the war, they live over the shop with Michael's mother till they've saved enough to move to the suburbs. There they remain with their three children, until the onset of the sixties, when their eldest daughter runs away to San Francisco. Their marriage survives for a while, finally crumbling in the seventies. If this all sounds a tad generic, Tyler's case isn't helped by the characteristics she's given the two spouses. Him: repressed, censorious, quiet. Her: voluble, emotional, romantic. Mars, meet Venus. What marks this couple, though, and what makes them come alive, is their bitter, unproductive, tooth-and-nail fighting. Tyler is exploring the way that ordinary-seeming, prosperous people can survive in emotional poverty for years on end. She gets just right the tricks Michael and Pauline play on themselves in order to stay together: "How many times," Pauline asks herself, "when she was weary of dealing with Michael, had she forced herself to recall the way he'd looked that first day? The slant of his fine cheekbones, the firming of his lips as he pressed the adhesive tape in place on her forehead." Only in antogonism do Michael and Pauline find a way to express themselves. --Claire Dederer

Book Description

From the inimitable Anne Tyler, a rich and compelling novel about a mismatched marriage—and its consequences, spanning three generations.

They seemed like the perfect couple—young, good-looking, made for each other. The moment Pauline, a stranger to the Polish Eastern Avenue neighborhood of Baltimore (though she lived only twenty minutes away), walked into his mother’s grocery store, Michael was smitten. And in the heat of World War II fervor, they are propelled into a hasty wedding. But they never should have married.

Pauline, impulsive, impractical, tumbles hit-or-miss through life; Michael, plodding, cautious, judgmental, proceeds deliberately. While other young marrieds, equally ignorant at the start, seemed to grow more seasoned, Pauline and Michael remain amateurs. In time their foolish quarrels take their toll. Even when they find themselves, almost thirty years later, loving, instant parents to a little grandson named Pagan, whom they rescue from Haight-Ashbury, they still cannot bridge their deep-rooted differences. Flighty Pauline clings to the notion that the rifts can always be patched. To the unyielding Michael, they become unbearable.

From the sound of the cash register in the old grocery to the counterculture jargon of the sixties, from the miniskirts to the multilayered apparel of later years, Anne Tyler captures the evocative nuances of everyday life during these decades with such telling precision that every page brings smiles of recognition. Throughout, as each of the competing voices bears witness, we are drawn ever more fully into the complex entanglements of family life in this wise, embracing, and deeply perceptive novel.

3 out of 5 stars Good writer, but...........2007-08-24

This is the fourth or fifth Anne Tyler book I have read. She is one of my mom's favorite writers so she keeps bringing her books to me to read. After reading this I immediately called Mom and told her not to bring me any more of Ms. Tyler's books! Don't get me wrong, she is an excellent writer. I read this book in a single day and couldn't put it down. I only have two problems with Ms. Tyler's books. First, she never really resolves her stories. She makes you care about these characters and then the story just kind of peters out. It's as if she's just writing away and suddenly says, "OK, that's it!" and gets up and walks away. Second, I always feel so melancholy for about two days after I finish one of her books. I'm sure it can be argued that there is a lot of realism in Ms. Tyler's books. Maybe there is, but not any kind of reality that applies to my life. I've been married to my husband (ironically also named Michael) for almost eight years and we also have three children (all boys though) and my marriage is nothing like the one described in this book. I've heard many reviewers say this is just like a typical marriage. Thank God my marriage is atypical is all I can say. If I had to live like Michael and Pauline I'd rather die old and alone. So basically, if you're a glass is half empty kind of person, this book is probably for you. However, if your glass is always half full and you believe that true romance, passion, and happily-ever-after are still possible in a marriage, pass this one by.

2 out of 5 stars This book goes from interesting to boring and boorish.......2007-08-16

This book started out interesting enough but over the years, the characters become so stale and predictable, by the end I could have cared less. And the one character you do have some vested interest in (Pauline, the lead female) completely disappears for endless, countless pages, while we hear how well her milk-toast husband does without her. Pauline, the source of fire in the book, completely loses out on life on pretty much every level, the husband ends up with the nice wife, the happy home - and ultimately he bored this reader half to sleep. How I even got through the last 10 years of their story is a testament to having books on CD and their soothing nature when stuck in heavy traffic.

4 out of 5 stars Unlikeable but interesting characters.......2007-08-12

I have to say that I didn't necessarily LIKE any of the characters in this book, but they each were very intriguing in their own way and I couldn't put the book down. The characters were very well thought out... even though each of them has some major flaws that makes life miserable for the people around them, Tyler manages to show how each of them is still good in some way - for example, Michael is stodgy, stingy, stuck in his ways, unromantic.... but he is also dependable, a hard worker, doesn't give up easily. Pauline is short-tempered, manipulative, selfish, unrealistic, probably bipolar... but she's also vivacious, creative, idealistic, the life of the party. This is how real people are - there's a little bit of good in even the most imperfect of us.

5 out of 5 stars The Fine Art of Living Day by Day.......2007-08-02

This is my first Anne Tyler novel and I have to wonder how I missed her? What a brilliant writer she is, and her subtlety in storytelling is to be admired and studied. It's so hard not to see the wastefulness that goes on in the lives of these characters. Some people just sleep through life and this is a great reminder to WAKE UP!

This was NOT a good book - boring and seemed to just ramble on and on.

When last encountered (2000's Dead and Gone), career criminal Burke was on the rebound from a nearly successful assassination attempt, lying low and licking his wounds in Portland, Oregon. Severed from his connections in NYC, Burke survives on jobs--"violence for money" mostly--brokered by his live-in lover, Gem, an Asian beauty with a painful, larcenous past and a present to match.

At hand is a task Burke has done before: the recovery of a runaway, a 16-year-old girl named Rosebud. But Burke, an assassin with scruples, knows when things aren't right. Rosebud's father, Kevin, has a '60s-era contempt of "The Man" that doesn't jibe with his obvious wealth. Mother Maureen limps through life on pharmaceutical crutches. Younger sister Daisy and best friend Jennifer know things but won't share. As his search spirals out from Portland's mean streets, Burke encounters a mysterious young woman, Ann O. Dyne, who offers to help for a price. Her raison d'être is pain management--securing and dispensing medications vital to the terminally ill but held beyond their reach by a largely uncaring cadre of doctors, lawyers, and politicians. Eventually, of course, this plot line connects with Rose's whereabouts.

Andrew Vachss's MO here, as usual, is a mystery (Rosebud's disappearance) plus an actual cause célèbre (humane pain management). It's a risky formula that aims both to entertain and to enlighten. With its believably unbelievable characters, Vachss's spare noir, and steely pacing that counterpoints a bolt-upright climax, Burke's 13th outing is every bit as satisfying as the dozen that came before. --Michael Hudson

          Book Description

Burke is back, but still lurking in the shadows, unable to return home. He is prowling the unfamiliar streets of Portland, Oregon, in search of a runaway teen. By all accounts, Rosebud Carlin is a happy, well-adjusted girl. She doesn’t fit the profile of the runaway kids Burke knows so wellÉand once was. But there’s something about her fatherÉ

Burke knows the street script, but the actors are all strangers. Cut off from his family and his network of criminal contacts, Burke is forced into a dangerous alliance with a renegade group dedicated to providing relief to those in intractable pain by any means necessary. A bargain is struck, and the fuse is lit. Heart-stopping and hard-hitting, Pain Management is the latest bout in Andrew Vachss's thrilling reign as undisputed champ of brass knuckles noir.

Andrew Vachss's previous novel, Dead and Gone, prompted the Rocky Mountain News to say, "Starting a Vachss novel is like putting a vial of nitroglycerine into your pocket and going for a jog." With his latest thriller, Vachss turns the heat up a notch by dropping his career criminal and ultimate urban survivalist, Burke, in the middle of some of the most dangerously determined humans he has ever faced. Burke has gone "missing-and-presumed" from his native New York City, following a failed assassination attempt. The shadowy man-for-hire is scratching out an existence in the Pacific Northwest, waiting to see if it is safe to return. Without his underground network of contacts and connections, cut off from his own people, Burke is forced to abandon his trademark complex scams. Instead, he returns to what he refers to as "violence for money." When Gem, the professional border-crosser who calls herself his wife, brings him a job tracking down a runaway teenager, Burke finds himself in a long, dark tunnel of lies-lined with more games than players. Burke takes to the unfamiliar streets, quickly and brutally establishing a presence. The whisper-stream carries him to a fanatical group of criminal Samaritans dedicated to supplying adequate drugs for those suffering from chronic pain. Forced into a potentially deadly alliance, Burke walks the wire between betrayals, risking it all for a girl he has never met. Because the State-raised outlaw knows better than most that there are many kinds of pain. And many ways to "manage" it.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, as always.......2007-08-12

Let me tell you - when Burke first lit out for Oregon, I was kind of disappointed. NYC has become such a character in the previous novels, I incorrectly assumed Portland would be a snoozer (I know, I'm such an East Coast-er). Boy was I wrong!

In "Pain Management" Burke is hired to track down a missing 16-year-old. His always on-target instinct tells him that there is something not quite right with the girl's family, and things just go to town from there. Burke manages to come across all types of underbelly characters, and Vachss is able to portray his experiences without making them sound too spy-novel.

Add to the mix a pharmaceutical drug plotline, lots of violence, sex, and a healthy serving of blues and doo-wop, and you've got yet another Vachss masterpiece.

As good as this book is - I really miss Burke's family back in NYC. I've got the next book sitting right here waiting for me, and I can't get to it fast enough.

5 out of 5 stars Touching and inspirational.......2005-12-26

Pain Management is touching and inspirational. Out of one of the grimmest parts of society, goodness blossoms in an effort to save people from deadly pain. Burke is his endearing self, as always. I recommend the novel as heartily as Andrew Vachss' other books which are also excellent.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite there.......2002-11-29

I think that _Blue Belle_ was the first Vachss novel that I tried, and after reading that I ripped through his subsequent novels with a sense of discovery and pleasure. To be honest, I lost that interest and amazement a number of books ago. While the first book set in Oregon gave me a glimmer of new hope, this book really isn't there either.

A lot of the problem is that what made Burke so interesting in the first few books was the very real tension between light and dark in the character. He was constantly in balance, and the nastiness made for a really refreshing read after all the weaker characters that you find in detective novels today. Unfortunately, Burke has been around too long, and he's just too much a defender to really believe in the Dark Knight anymore. He's taken on too many good causes and acted too much as protector of the helpless. Good thing in a person, less good if you want to keep the tension of someone strung between good and evil. I'm sure that the continuing novels serve Vachss' not-so-hidden agenda of educating his audience, but they just aren't as interesting to read at this point.

I'm a little troubled with myself for writing this kind of review, as I recognize that there are larger issues with these books than a good escapist read. I applaud Vacchs' determination in the work he does for children and I think he's chosen a nearly ideal vehicle for getting his messages out.

I just wish that I had the same compulsion to read Burke novels as I did with the first.

Anyways, this book (Burke tries to ignore his problematic relationship with Gem, while taking on the case of a 16-year old runaway) is well-written and will probably appeal. Still worth a read, in any case.

4 out of 5 stars Burke returns, in Oregon.......2002-11-19

Andrew Vachss has to be an interesting individual. You get the idea that Burke, the main character in his novels, is a somewhat nastier version of himself. Burke is a shadowy figure, with only one name (only one was given when he was an orphan) and a mysterious, cloudy, bitter view of the world. He works around the edges of things, making money on the black market, specializing in being untraceable and invisible, or almost. He is almost completely uninterested in the fate of people he doesn't know, and for the most part he's pretty cold. He has a real hatred for criminals who exploit children.

In this outing, he's gone to ground in Portland Oregon. This is a departure for Vachss, who's set almost all of his books in New York City. He bounces around town, establishing a "rep" so that someone can hire him to do something. Eventually a troubled father contacts him, looking for his daughter. Burke agrees to look, and does so with his usual disregard for rules, animosity towards authority figures, and dark, mysterious methods. When he finds the girl, the answers are not at all what you were expecting, satisfying though they are. There's a whole interlude where Burke helps a woman who steals drugs for the chronically ill, and it's from this side-plot that the book gets its title.

I liked the story, about as much as I usually do with Vachss. Everything's very dark (I don't think I could read two of these in a row without contemplating suicide) and murky, and the structure of the book is strange, too. For those who aren't familiar, Vachss has veered between numbering his chapters and not bothering. They're anywhere between a couple of lines and a page or two of text, very short, very choppy. The author seems to just only write part of the story, several lines of dialog, and expect the reader to fill in the rest.

Given that, this is a good book.

3 out of 5 stars The sadness works, but I miss the wrath..........2002-11-14

Burke is laying low in Oregon. He's not in his element (New York), and this affects "Pain Management" as it affected "Down in The Zero." For me, a Burke story works best when the villain inspires a gut-deep flash of pure HATRED. I didn't get that fix this time. Also, just the words "New York" carry a seediness integral to the mood of Vachss' work.

Under an alias, Burke agrees to locate a well-heeled hippie's daughter. Things about her disappearance don't add up, and Burke encounters some locals who may or may not help him. They also may or may not be milking him for their own cause - getting pain meds to those in greatest need despite America's short-sighted treatment policies. These two plotlines never really merge. The daughter's family bears a secret that caused her to take off, but it's...well, a more "esoteric" reason than molestation. On the plus side, Vachss offers some intelligent, sympathetic young characters. He reminds us that everyone has the potential to be both Cain AND Abel.

Burke's usual anger and vigilance fall short of his melancholy. Things with Gem are decaying, and this almost becomes a distraction from the plot. His woman troubles don't end there; Ann O. Dyne is the most annoying girl Burke has dealt with since Fancy ("Down in The Zero") or Nadine ("Choice of Evil"). She's not stupid, just annoying. Flood, Blossom and Belle are still the top-tier Burkettes.

Vachss' effort to broaden the scope of issues in Burke novels is commendable. However, it doesn't play to Burke's strengths. Baby Boy Burke is a conman first and a killer first-and-a-half. "Pain Management," while thought-provoking, didn't hit me as hard as earlier works. Burke has the blues six feet deep, and the only effective remedy is to get back to New York and take it out on the lowest of the low. With "Only Child," I hope to see How Burke Got His Groove Back.

                    Book Description

Low-carb diets have transformed the way America eats, but staying on them presents two common challenges—cravings and boredom. Drs. Rachael and Richard Heller, known for over twenty years as the Carbohydrate Addict's doctors, have helped millions of people achieve weight-loss success in their low-carb diets. Now, developing two hundred exciting, all-new recipes, they present a one-of-a-kind cookbook that asks readers specifically what they're hungry for. Organized by thorough lists of longings, from hot and spicy to cool and refreshing, The Carbohydrate Addict's No Cravings Cookbook emphasizes on-the-spot satisfaction that will reinvigorate every low-carb dieter on any program.

Each of these selections is truly low-carb, with six grams of carbohydrates or less per serving, and none of the recipes require special low-carb brand food, obscure ingredients, or sugar substitutes. Desperate for a real Italian dinner? Try Chicken Parmesan Romana. Hankering for heat? Flaming Shrimp Portobello is fiery and delicious. Craving crunch? Crisp and Crackly Cheese Crackers provide the right snap.

Keeping readers motivated, the recipes in The Carbohydrate Addict's No Cravings Cookbook address individual palates in an energizing new way. This is the ultimate cookbook for winning the fight against carbohydrate temptation, reaching and maintaining your ideal weight, and reviving the pure pleasure of eating.

3 out of 5 stars ok, but not great.......2006-08-24

I recently started the South Beach diet so I was looking for some low/no card recipes. I wasn't too excited by the recipes in this book. Some offbeat stuff and stuff I would never eat. True, no sugar substitutes, but I like other low card recipe books I've gotten better. But heck, it was real cheap.

                    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2005-09-27

I was a little reluctant to purchase yet another low carb cookbook when I happened upon this one while browsing. I picked it up, looked through it, put it back, moved on and came back to it later. Am I ever glad I did! This book is the best low carb cookbook that I've ever owned, bar none, and I own quite a selection. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the recipes are "new" (you won't find a single cheesecake recipe), and that the ingredients could be purchased in any local grocery store. The format is enjoyable to simply read, for those cookbook lovers like myself who can spend an evening reading recipes! All recipes I have tried thus far have been very good; I wouldn't think twice about making them for guests as well.

                    Book Description

In The Mediterranean Pantry, Aglaia Kremezi presents 70 recipes for condiments and seasoning mixtures from France, Italy, Spain, the Eastern Mediterranean, and North Africa. The chapters correspond to how these provisions are preserved--in bottles, boxes, and jars. The text is accompanied by 20 color photographs that demonstrate how to turn these items into elegant gifts.

The Mediterranean Pantry includes recipes for unusual and familiar condiments--preserves, flavored oils and vinegars, liqueurs, and spices using these products. Preserve colorful red, yellow, and green bell peppers in olive oil during the height of the season, and serve a tasty pasta sauce months later that you can make in minutes chopping the peppers and mixing with roasted garlic and olive oil. Or make a tart green tomato and mint relish before the first frost and enjoy it with roast lamb on a cold winter night. The Mediterranean Pantry will help you infuse sunny Mediterranean flavors into meals all years long.

This delicious collection includes recipes for Preserved Lemons, Green Olives with Harissa and Orange, Green Fig Preserves, Fried Artichoke with Garlic in Olive Oil, Olive Oil with Truffles, and many other items with which to stock your pantry shelves. Many recipes are as simple as mixing several ingredients, with little or no cooking. In addition, a detailed list of mail-order sources ensures that even the most exotic ingredients will be available to all.

2 out of 5 stars Found book arrangement difficult.......2005-04-27

A College textbook or reference-type book. Comprehensive--fine print. Seemed a good read, but I didn't like the set-up. All text was in the front, and the examples and photos were grouped in the back. One would need to flip back and forth to view examples of the subject matter. Didn't work for me.

This is the only reason I gave it a low rating, and returned the book.

4 out of 5 stars The Complete Guide to Furniture Styles.......2003-01-28

As a college educator in the history of architecture, furniture and the decorative arts I think the Boger is a very good overall text both to students and interested others. Information on furnitre prior to Gothic is the weakest, and would reccomend other texts to satisfy those needs. Photographic reproduction quality in some instances barely passable.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for a history of furniture styles!.......2001-03-01

I have to disagree with the previous reviewer--this book is FILLED with pictures in the back half of the book. The pictures are disappointingly all black and white, but it keeps the cost down I suppose. This is the best resource for visual identification of styles from Egyptian through Twentieth Century that I have seen, and I have seen quite a lot of them. The front half of the book is very detailed information about each of the styles as well as specific pieces within each style. It's not something you can read from cover to cover, as the details would quickly overcome you. But it is a wonderful reference book for anyone who wants to be able to look up a particular style, read about it, and look at many pictures to visually understand general characteristics of the style.

3 out of 5 stars Good written description of history and style.......2000-06-09

THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO FURNITURE STYLES is a well written guide to the history of different periods of furniture. It states the history of the period and crucial pieces with a description of the piece. There are very few pictures, so if you are looking for a guide to train your eye to note characteristics of period pieces, this will not help you. If you are looking for a written description of the pieces, this book is for you.

This is an excellent book for the history of style, proportions, and ergonomics. It is especially useful for the cabinetmaker who is custom designing furniture. The golden section (golden rectangle) is covered in the most precise detail I have ever seen. The tables and charts are extremely helpful in the design stage of any project. If you design furniture, you'll definitely want this book in your library.

4 out of 5 stars Introduces process and principles into the art of design.......1999-10-02

An excellent book which has earned a spot over my drawing table. Superbly covers form/function, visualization, standardized (ergo) vs. personalized design, and construction principles. Covers drawing, drafting and CAD well. Includes a brief history of furniture.

The math is suited for the drawing table rather than the shop, as you should expect for a design book. The hows and whys of design principles are explored, some not as conclusively as I'd like.

The book is well illustrated with many relavent line drawings, charts, and graphs. It is nicely laid out, easy to read, and pleasing to look at.

                    Nice job, Mr. Graves!

... and you have a thing of beauty when you're done!

I was lucky enough to scoop this book up in our public library. It was the beauty of the cover that attracted me. I had never quilted before, but had wanted to learn how. I knew this was not a how-to book, but was aimed at an audience who had more experience than I. It assumes you have some knowledge of terms and techniques, like strip piecing, but a short beginner's class will bring you up to speed fast enough! I have never been disappointed when buying a book by Liz Porter and Marianne Fons. The instructions are clear and concise, and you can avoid some pitfalls if you follow the instructions literally, as in assembling star pieces in the same order as they do - it makes it lie flat and you can ease the seams together better.

I also like the little tidbits they throw in. They're a wonderful team and they write wonderful books. I did my first strip-pieced Starburst quilt in a class that made alot more progress than I did and I used this book to finish the project. It's a great addition to any home quilting library.

                                              Product Description

"The preservation of the Union was the motivating force that inspired Hoosiers to contribute so much to the Union cause during the Civil War. Indiana furnished 208,367 men, of which 24,416 were killed or died of disease during the war. These men constituted 141 regiments of infantry, 16 regiments of cavalry and 26 batteries of artillery. While most of the units served in the western theater of operations, Indiana troops fought in 308 engagements in seventeen states. Hoosiers first tasted combat on June 3, 1861, at Phillippi, Virginia, and took part in the last battle of the Civil War at Palmetto Ranch, Texas, on May 13, 1865. A Chronology of Indiana in the Civil War is an attempt to give a day by day account of Indiana's participation in the Civil War. It is hoped that this chronology will be helpful and interesting to the student of Civil War history; that is will convince the casual reader that Indiana's role in the Civil War was an important one; that it will illustrate the significant part Indiana played in winning Union victory; and that it will provoke additional study and research by those who read it." Book Description

Grayson Hall was a widely acclaimed New York Theatre actress, 1964 Academy Award nominee, and co-star of the 1960s-70s Gothic television serial, Dark Shadows.

Here for the first time is a survey of her life and career which takes place in the world of New York writers and artists beginning in the early 1950s; a world that revolved around serious intellectual discourse, cocktails, cigarettes and theatre! Grayson's own story is that of a hugely talented woman, admired by writers, producers, fellow actors, but who did not get the one role that would propel her into the stratosphere. Nevertheless, with the roles she did inhabit, she became an iconic figure.

This book reaches back to Grayson's earliest stage appearances in 1942 as a teenager on Long Island; her extensive stage work in regional theatre and in New York City; her television and film appearances including three early New York art house films, the avant-garde French film Qui êtes-vous, You Polly Maggoo? and her Oscar nominated turn in The Night of the Iguana. And for Dark Shadows followers, this book answers some lingering questions: who got hired on Shadows first, Grayson or her husband Sam? Was it always happiness and light on the Dark Shadows set? And did she really do much aside from Shadows or Iguana?

5 out of 5 stars One Heck Of A Lady.......2007-06-18

Grayson Hall, the subject of this novel, was one fascinating individual. In reading Jamison's excellent biography, I found myself wishing that I had gotten to know her, or at least seen one of her stage plays.

Knowing the woman primarily from Dark Shadows, it was a treat to discover that she was a real person; funny, warm, emphatic and totally dedicated to her art and her family. RJ Jamison draws her perfectly: he does not apologize for the flaws and comments on her subliminal acting abilities with gusto.

The only problem is: whoever inserted the photos (and yes, when I read a biography I always look at the pictures) really did a lack luster job of it. Ms Hall comes off cropped badly as most of the pictures are fully distorted.

But don't let that stop you from getting (and enjoying) this fantastic book.

                                                              4 out of 5 stars Nice Read.......2007-05-16

I enjoyed learning about the theatre business as well as gaining insight into the actress herself. I love Grayson Hall, this book was not disappointing.

                                                              5 out of 5 stars A Real Gem.......2007-03-15

Grayson Hall was a real character in her own life so it is not surprising that she could make a star-turn in just about any role she took on. This book is a wonderful look into an actor's life, how actors live and work. Ms. Jamison left no stone unturned in this bio!

In this thoroughly researched biography, author R.J. Jamison chronicles the metamorphosis of young, awkward Shirley Grossman into the eventually sophisticated and elegant Academy Award-nominated actress, Grayson Hall. Revealing never before told stories and secrets (including Shirley's true date of birth), Jamison finally opens the door on the enigma that was Grayson Hall. Who was this woman really? Was she the no-nonsense actress who made young ingénues quake in their shoes? Or was she the kind-hearted friend who doted on her family? It turns out that she was both of these and so much more. Whether you know Grayson from the theatre, movies, or from Dark Shadows, you will "surely" want to read this book about our "Shirley."

What is Love? Divine, physical, Spiritual... The 'Cadillac Diet' is an exploratory search for what God wishes for us on earth. The tale is told through the vehicle of a 40 something man and his teen son that move to a small Florida town to start over. Their arrival coincides with an image of Jesus appearing at the exact spot at which the first mass in the new world took place over 400 years ago. A series of events reveals that 'he' will appear again. The ensuing media frenzy pairs him with a dynamic female reporter sent to cover the story. In the circus like atmosphere that develops they encounter religious charlatans and the faithful curious. At least one murder is attributed to the ensuing struggle for the rights to Jesus' foretold second coming. Also, there are some really great recipes!
