Book Description
Sasparillo, an armadillo from Texas, leaves his home to find out where on Earth he is, and with the help of a golden eagle, he discovers where he lives--in a city, in a state, in a country, on a continent, on a planet, in the solar system, in the universe. Along the way, Sasparillo learns about geography, history, the environment, and animals native to Texas.

Great book.......2006-08-06
This book is great. It is a great adventure for young readers. Books are a great way to discover far off places and this one takes the readers to many places in the United States. I highly recommend this book.
THE LOST IS FOUND.......2004-04-08
Granted the Lone Star State is a large one - many miles and every sort of terrain imaginable from plains to lakes to hills to cavernous waste. And, this is where Sasparillo has lost his way.
How in the world will a tiny, friendly armadillo find his way home in this vast area? Never fear, there are those who help and in this case it's a strong eagle.
Yes, a magnificent eagle befriends Sasparillo and carries him across the sky as the little armadillo searches for his home.
Youngsters love a happy ending, and Sasparillo finds one.
Great book!!.......2004-02-09
My daughter loves armadillos, so when I saw this book at the library, I had to bring it home. It is great. It took her interest in armadillos and combined it with geography. The author did a great job of intertwining the fact that there are 50 states and linking that with the continents and our place on earth and the planets in the solar system. For us, this is definately worth purchasing!!
Emma says...........2003-03-22
it's a very good book but it needs more details about other places. I really liked the postcards because they looked so real. If I was going to places, I would write postcards to my friends.
Signed, E.J.W.
A must for everyone who loves childrens books.......1998-09-15
I checked out this book from our local library because of the colorful illustrations, but as soon as I got it home I knew I had discovered a treasure. My children loved the rolling, tumbling word play and I loved the fact that they were learning as I was reading. Ms Cherry does a wonderful job of drawing you into the story and her illustrations are delightful. I have added this book to our home library and look forward to seeing new stories from this wonderful authoress. I highly recommed it to any one with children or a love for Texas. A must to own.

Book Description
Vulcan: linchpin member of the United Federation of Planets. Home to a civilization dedicated to o'thia, the ruling ethic of pure logic. But it was not always so; thousands of years before, Vulcans were a violent, warlike race, with tempers surpassed only by the planet's hot, arid sands. The philosopher Surak would show his people another way, teach them to reject their emotions and embrace logic and knowledge. The Vulcans would evolve and prosper, eventually exploring the stars and attaining further enlightenment as they encountered other cultures.
In the twenty-third century, Commander Spock, Captain Kirk, and the U.S.S. Enterprise are summoned to Vulcan when its people consider seceding from the Federation and returning to their isolationist ways. Vulcan's savage history becomes fully revealed as Spock, his father Sarek, and Kirk work to preserve the planet's future from anti-Terran factions with hidden agendas. The crisis is twofold for the half-human Spock -- should Vulcan secede, he will be required to resign from Starfleet and return home, or forever sever ties with his homeworld.
Years later, a decades-old plot to destroy the Federation from within forces Ambassador Sarek from the bedside of his dying wife, Amanda. The ambassador's decision widens the long-standing rift between himself and Spock at a time when they must pool their resources together. While the Enterprise crew contends with Romulans, Klingons, and the mysterious Freelans, Sarek's only comfort comes from reading Amanda's journals, which reveal more about his human spouse, his son, and himself than he ever realized.

WARNING: COMPILATION, NOT A NEW ST NOVEL.......2005-01-17
This is NOT a new Star Trek novel: it is merely a compilation of two previously released ST novels, Sarek, and Spock's World. My one star rating reflects my annoyance at having to return what I thought was a new novel when I purchased it. The rating is not a commentary on either of the novels included in this compilation, both of which I thought were quite good.
BEWARE, STAR TREK FANS--THIS IS NOT A NEW BOOK!.......2004-12-19
"Sand and Stars" is actually two older books--"Spock's World" and "Sarek"--repackaged. Although both books are great, therefore, making this book great, I was DEEPLY DISAPPOINTED when it arrived in the mail because I had already read them. I thought I was getting a NEW Star Trek book about the Vulcans. The description and product detail do not explain this. So, if you have not read "Spock's World" or "Sarek," by all means, order this book--you'll really enjoy it!

The Color of Adventure!.......2000-04-19
Many of the early SPIDER adventures had colorful titles -- no doubt as a aid to the cover artist. These two adventures, "King of the Red Killers" and "Green Globes of Death" are first-rate stories that show the breadth of the series. "King of the Red Killers" has THE SPIDER dealing with a foreign invasion, ala Operator 5. "Green Globes of Death" is a first rate mystery, with a worthy arch-villain -- "The Fly", naturally!

The essential-and accessible-guide to the science of baking
Baking is as much a science as an art. That's why, in addition to mastering basic techniques and recipes, every baker must also learn about the science that underlies the baking craft. Guided by contemporary baking and pastry research and practice, this new edition of Joseph Amendola's invaluable reference gives readers knowledge that they can apply to their own baking-whether it's selecting the right flour, understanding how different leavening agents work, or learning about using new baking ingredients and additives to enhance favorite recipes. Written in a clear, easy-to-understand style, Understanding Baking is an essential companion for anyone who is serious about baking.
Customer Reviews:
The *best* book for the money.......2006-04-24
I am a cake designer by trade and I'm getting ready to teach my first college level course and this is the book that I will be using for my students.
The reason for this is simple: value for money with a clear understanding of baking principles.
Most professional tomes like the Gisslen or Friberg book will set you back 50-75 dollars a book. You can have both of Amendola's books for the cost of just one. Sure, they might not have all the pretty pictures, but why go out and spend hundreds of dollars that you don't need to.
And to set the record straight, I completely disagree with the person who complained that the books were boring and too scientific. The act of baking is not an art - it's all about science and if you think that's boring then you shouldn't be baking.
A good baker and cake designer will know and understand why cakes are made the way they are, otherwise, he or she will not have the knowledge needed to overcome the problems and issues that every baker will face at some point in his or her career, whether professional or home baker.
If you're a home baker and you want a less "science-driven" book then I'd suggest The Baker's Dozen. If you love cake and really want to understand what it's all about then you can't beat Joseph Amendola - he is a master.
Baker's Best Friend.......2003-07-08
Understanding Baking gives the student baker all the baking science he or she will actually ever need in day to day operations. This new edition has a much friendlier tone and eliminates a great of the repetition and overly arcane or dated material that existed in the previous editions. Theory and concepts are related to actual products much more clearly. Rees/Amendola lucidly and concisely explain the chemistry of ingredient interaction, baking physics and supply useful ingredient definitions. The reference tables and troubleshooting guides are helpful and clear. The new information on wild yeast starter/artisan bread is timely and interesting as is the discussion of trans and cis fats. Any pastry chef can tell you that the most complicated presentations begin with a good grounding in the basics. From there, it's up to you. Industrial baking, which this edition, for the most part, sidesteps, is now so specialized, automated and artificially preserved you need an whole set of encyclopedias to understand the processes that are usually performed by a machine. On the other hand, with this book and it's companion volume, The Baker's Manual (also recently revised with many, many appealing new formulas), you could start a fine little pastry shop. It impowers you to be the best baker you can be.
Understanding Baking/ The Baker's Manual.......2003-02-20
The older editions were geared towards professional bakers
or those that wanted to be. Joseph Amendola's work is
hard to see in this latest edition. They have dumbed this one down. To quote "Chemists in large industrial-sized bakeries have actually conducted studies that determined the optimum specific gravity and pH levels for each type of cake. Knowing this, of course, makes it all the more worrisome to be at the mercy of a plain old recipe book, with no such equipment on hand to provide guidance or reassurance. Fortunately, some room for variation exists in cake baking." I just don't see someone of Amendola's background and reputation writing this...Understanding the science of baking is crucial for baking success. Most retail bakers understand and utilize specific gravity when baking cakes...this insures accuracy in baking-and this translates to dollars and wasted product saved. A nice book for the home baker perhaps, but as a text book, it is a regression. Too bad.
A gem........2002-10-10
This book is great because it covers the fundamentals of baking. I believe that fundamentals are important as they serve as a starting point for pastry chefs. I appreciate the fact that they've included all aspects of baking - from the simplest of information for the beginners to the complex stuff for the professionals.
Dry and overpriced.......2000-11-03
"Understanding Baking" is a dry-as-toast recitation of the principles underlying the preparation of baked goods. The book would appear to be intended for the culinary student, since the authors apparently didn't feel burdened with need to make the subject matter interesting to a wider audience. It a 'just the facts, madam' kind of book with nary a single recipe to be found. (See "Cookwise" by Shirley Corriher for an example of the complete opposite.) The chapters are curiously organized -- some are done in straight narrative with review questions at the end, while others are written in a programmed-learning, question-and-answer style. Some chapters are a mix of both. The editing is sloppy in spots, and I would swear there are at least two instances where the author's insertion notes were carried right on into the final printing (pgs. 16-17, and 46-47). All that being said, however, the book is indeed crammed with information essential to the professional baker, and there are several very useful charts showing cake/cookie/bread/pie faults and their causes. Home cooks will benefit if they can stay awake, but the book is clearly targeted toward the professional and professional wannabe.

Book Description
Jean-Christophe Novelli is one of London's most-celebrated new Michelin-starred chefs, renowned for his striking combinations of flavors and artisitc presentations. But at the heart of many of his signature dishes are easy and accessible recipes perfectly suited to the home cook. In his restaurant kitchens Jean-Christophe adapts and combines these core recipes in a varietyof innovative ways suivant son humeur--according to his mood--adding an unusual vegetable here, a highly flavored oil or an exotic garnish there, to produce the dazzling creations for which he is so well known. Now adventuresome home cooks can re-create these spectacular effects in their own kitchens.
Your Place or Mine: Cooking at Home with Restaurant Style follows Jean-Christophe's building-block approach to cooking, offering more than 100 recipes along with dozens of ideas for variations. In sections on Fish and Shellfish, Poultry and Game, Meat, Vegetables, and Desserts, he demonstrates how to build on simple recipes to discover a range of from his repertoire of oils, powders, juices, and reductions. For example, a simple eggplant caviar becomes an integral layer of a luscious Goat Cheese Terrine with Eggplant and Red Pepper Caviar. A straightforward hearty beef daube becomes the stuffing for an elegant sweet glazd onion. Transform fresh pan-seared scallops, Fava Beans, Orange, Vanilla, and Cardamom. Or let the pure flavors of the basic recipes speak for themselves--the choice is yours, according to your mood.
Lavishly illustrated with full--color photographs of both simple and more complex dishes, including the chef's whimsical dessert sensations, along with step-by-step photographs of more intricate culinary techniques,
Your Place or Mine will inspire you to experiment, improvise, and be as bold and creative as the chef himself.
Amazon.com
For cooks who have at least the basics of kitchen craft under their apron strings, London chef and Michelin star owner Jean-Christophe Novelli offers a guide to the next level. In Your Place or Mine, Chef Novelli takes the adventuresome cook to the core of his exciting, eye-catching work, where some pretty simple techniques for enhancing flavor team up with whimsy. Any home cook who works from one end of Your Place or Mine to the other can't help but come out the other side with a better grip on the creative spark that ignites culinary fireworks. "Suivant son humeur," Chef Novelli is inclined to chant--"According to his mood." Your Place or Mine will show the home cook how to translate mood into stunning meals.
The text opens with a section called "Jean-Christophe's Box of Tricks." These include various flavor-infused oils, dressings, reductions, and powders of such ingredients as orange peel, carrots, and cèpes. There's nothing revolutionary about these tricks--they have been knocking around restaurants for the last decade. But Chef Novelli encourages the reader to take them home, stand back, and enjoy the results.
As for building a dish, Chef Novelli will take a core ingredient and build with it, like using blocks. The construction changes according to mood and whimsy. Confit of Rabbit Leg with Vanilla-Seed Risotto, for example, moves right along to the more elaborate Rabbit and Vanilla-Seed Risotto with Confit of Rabbit Leg, Rabbit Loin, and Vanilla Sauce. The initial dish demonstrates the basic technique. The second dish shows the reader how to take that technique on up to the restaurant production level.
Chapters follow a traditional path: Fish and Shellfish, Poultry and Game, Meat, Vegetables, and Desserts. Chef Novelli moves from Pan-Fried Scallops with Orange, Vanilla, and Cardamom to Broiled Lemon Sole with Bibb Lettuce and Ginger Sauce, from Roast Quail with Broiled Pancetta to Sweet Glazed Onion Stuffed with Beef Daube, from Spicy Eggplant Salad with Parmesan Crackling to Coconut Crème Brûlée. Not only will a home cook who tackles these recipes put stunning meals on the table, that same cook will also be sure to view the world of food a little differently as a result. "Suivant son humeur" may well become such a cook's catchword. --Schuyler Ingle

Definitely Your Place!.......2006-04-16
The food has always been an important focal point in my family. My grandparents used to love gathering the entire family on festive occasions around a grand dinning table, providing all sorts of sumptuous delicious dishes that used to take hours if not days to prepare. As a child I used to look forward to those occasions. They used to spare no expense in entertaining the entire family, cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. in the grandest Turkish fashion. That tradition was embraced by my own parents who loved throwing dinner parties where every single detail was not overlooked. They used to hire waiters and additional cooks to help my mother to work her magic in the kitchen for our guests. My parents' dinner parties and my mothers cooking are legendary among their circle of friends and acquaintances; so much so that if there is a long gap between their dinner parties, their friends will remind them that it's about time that they threw another one.
Now away from all that grand dining that I have been brought up with, I am trying hard to keep the same tradition alive in a modest way in San Francisco despite our busy lives. Every night we try to prepare different menus and sit down to a dinner table with at least three course meal. It is a hard process, since we work long hours in investment banking. We like eating well but don't like spending too much time in the kitchen as my mother, grandmothers and aunts used to. Thus we look for cooking books that will guide us in that process. But Your Place or Mine: Cooking at Home with Restaurant Style by Jean-Christ Novelli which was given to me as a present and is not such a book. It is not a cookbook for a beginner; the recipes are very time consuming and detailed. This is a book for a seasoned cook such as my mother, who will use it to prepare stylish impressive food on very special occasions. It is about top notch restaurant style food preparing at home, written by one of London's most-celebrated Michelin-starred chefs. The dishes in this book are of extremely high quality and are of kind of food that you would like others to prepare it for you or you would expect to have it served at award winning top restaurants. Having said that, the book is full of well illustrated photos that will guide seasoned chefs or home cooks to prepare those exceptional dishes. I wish my cooking skills were such that I could use this book to prepare sumptuous meals each night! We prepared Confit of Rabbit Leg with Vanilla-Seed Risotto with Mandarin Brul?e after many hours in the kitchen one Saturday and the end results were such that it sent our taste buds craving for more! Absolutely fabulous cookbook if you have the skill. For less seasoned cooks such as myself, I would urge one to use The French Laundry Cookbook by Thomas Keller to prepare those exceptional dishes. Jean-Christ Novelli's stunning cookbook will be on display on our coffee table to impress our guests, it will not be a book that we shall use often. Your Place or Mine? Lets me to say, definitely yours!!
Your Place or Mine?.......2001-05-03
Definitely for the more experienced cook but wonderful, insightful recipes! Lots of great sauces and oils. A lot of the recipes inspired me to make up recipes of my own. Great instructions and pictures showing stages of cooking. Beautiful pictures of the food! Not the kind of food you would make after a busy day at the office but you could really show off for a special dinner or meal. Highly recommend to the adventurous.

Just a great book all around. So may great cars to look at and read about. If you want detailed information on a single car or generation of a car then look elsewhere, but for pretty good commentary and loads of pictures, this book is an excellent read, and reference.
An ideal guide to American Muscle cars........2006-05-25
This is a big book. Its mostly color photos throughout. Each car has 1 page devoted to it,1 color photo (sometimes 2 photos)and plenty of information. Its a great book.
The standard of these books from this publisher has improved over their former black and white photos and low quality paper. Now these books are printed on very high quality paper and plenty of color photos.
This book is an overview of American muscle cars.It helps knowing whats out there. If you wanted specific and detailed information on your favourite model you should consider looking at books that cater for specific models. This book is a gem and an ideal book to start with.

This book really rocks! They've got A TON of cars in here, great photos, cool writing by John Gunnell. I really like his writing style. Lots of cool information and period reviews of the coolest cars Detroit ever produced.
I had a copy of the previous editon of this book, and the 4th Edition is a great improvement. 400 pages! This is a great bargain on a really well-done book.

I was very dissappointed in this book. For the money, I wish I would have chosen another PMC book. Its very basic and mainly B/W pics, very few color. What color ones there are, I wasnt impressed. This book stays on the bottom of my PMC book pile.
