Angela Carter - The Bloody Chamber.......2007-07-16
A very good collection of short stories.
We had to read this for our English Literature course and I'm very glad I did. Carter is a very talented writer and this book deserves the recognition and awards it got.
The best stories to watch out for are;
The Bloody Chamber,
The Tiger's Bride
The Snow Child
The Werewolf
Carter's language is very elaborate, so if you're going to read it, do as my English tutor said; "Read actively. Have a pen in your hand and a dictionary next to you". Trust me, she was right.
A very good read if you can understand what is going on. All the stories are based on old fairytales (i.e. The Tiger's Bride is based on Beauty and The Beast) so if you can work out how the story is similar and find links you should be able to appreciate the stories.
Gothic writing at it's best!.......2007-04-08
Angela Carter is a superb author with a vivid and utterly compelling style. Her short stories are graphic, sexy, and page-turning. She doesn't disappoint! If you loved fairytales as a child but need that little something extra now that your older and wiser then you simply must read this book!
The flip side of the traditional fairy tale.......2006-04-26
Carter's collection sheds a feminist retelling of many famous fairy tales. I especially liked what she did with Blackbeard and the Puss in Boots.
Included in this collection is the story behind the film, "In the Company of the Wolves."
Don't come to this collection expecting Grimm's. Come to it expecting great storytelling and interesting perspectives on the tales we thought we knew so well.
Twisted fairy tales.......2005-12-11
I had to read this book for one of my college courses and absolutly loved it. The way Carter twists the fairy tales and adds a sometimes morbid clencher is excellent. I loved the statments she was making in them and the way stories were told was excellent. As was the fact that women weren't made out to be weak or that their only rightful place was in the kitchen. Out of all the stories in the book I found "The Tigers Bride" (re-telling of Beauty and the Beast) and "The Company of Wolves" (re-telling of Little Red Riding Hood) to be my favorites.
Little Red Riding Hood and the Lone Wolf.............2005-12-03
This great collection of short stories by the late Angela Carter focusses on the theme of familiar fairy tales and legends that includes Red Riding Hood, Bluebeard, Puss in Boots, Beauty and the Beast, vampires and werewolves with a provocative element and mind-inflicting twists. The gist of these dark tales, written in fantastic prose venture on the chemistry between human and beast(s) and of their self-discovery of inner thought as well as their physical sexual conformations. This book can be read over and over as the language woven within it's plot reaches a point where there are many possiblities for the characters-the innocent virginal maiden and the beast can go from, and for the reader being left in a wild sense of wanting to know more.
So be prepared to be propelled through one heck of a rollercoaster as from the first few pages, even every sentence containing a unique word will immediately have an impact in this sexually implicit and bloody fest of a book.
I accidentally came across Angela Carter's works through "The Company of Wolves", as i have never heard of her, and will definitely be amongst my collection including S.K., James Herbert, Dean Koontz. Highly recommended for horror fans.

Truely the finest piece of gothic literature of the century........2002-11-30
Angela Carters book the Bloody Chamber can only be described as sparkling genious. Carter writes with the combination of the classic fairy tale, and magical realism, incorperating elements of gothic horror,and subversive sexuality. She weaves tales of sinister locations, fearsome monsters,and powerful heroes to leave the reader with a slanted version of an old moral. Her interpretations are brought to life by her powerful descriptions and modern settings. Her stories are proof that this genre can still terrify off screen. The Bloody Chamber is truely one of the finest pieces of gothic liteature of the century.
A loving dark twist on beautiful fairytales and folklore...........2000-04-04
Angela Carter wields a deliciously decadent pen once again in The Bloody Chamber. This slim volume is packed with familiar tales retold with a dark gothic twist, each tempered with a saucy wit and the ability to impart new meaning onto old standards. Heroines are erotic, independant and canny, and their victories contain a bite, an edge that places these tales outside the traditional happy ending. Stories are beautifully overblown and hyperreal. The Bloody Chamber is stunning in its delicacy and sly, subtle humour that tempers even the darkest tale. This world is very female , where the instigators of action and solvers of perilous events are mothers, daughters, wives and wild girls. Carter's work is too beautiful to describe - she needs to be read again and again, and each time, a new shade can be seen to her impressive legacy. She is an addictive read.

Angela Carter, The Bloody Chamber and Other Adult Tales (Harper, 1979)
Angela Carter tells stories. Fairy tales, to be precise, at least in this volume. They're the fairy tales you know well, that you grew up with. Carter just wants you to know that they've grown up with you. The Bloody Chamber and Other Adult Tales visits old standards and, well, not "makes them new again," exactly, but takes a slightly different approach in the telling, making them earthier, exploring explicitly subtexts only hinted at in the tales we know (even if we grew up on the unexpurgated editions). In some ways, Angela Carter's minor masterpiece stands in direct opposition to Wendy Walker's retellings of fairytales, as Walker does the same thing, but by twisting the tales into even more labyrinthine iterations; Carter just wants to hack all the floweriness away and get to the bloody, decaying meat of the matter. Both writers are doing something wonderful. If you've never had the pleasure, pick up The Bloody Chamber and Other Adult Tales and get a glimpse of what Grimm was too scared to spell out. ****

Twist On "Who Done It".......2006-02-13
Ruby is a Rabbi's widow in Eternal, Texas and her congregation still expects her to behave "appropriately". The book starts off very slow.....there is a lot you will learn about Temple Rita, and the Jewish faith along the way. I thought even with the snail like start I'd continue only because I might learn something. The Essie Sue character is annoying at best, but unfortunately you need her...after all, she made the chopped liver and is the organizer of the reunion event for Temple Rita. What made this so unusual for a mystery is that the killer is revealed shortly after the murder...and the rest of the book is set on catching him in all sorts of plots and twist which are very cleverly done. Rita , I suspect, must be in her early 40's, at best. If it says, I missed it, but her actions and clothes she wears and her 20 something college son all point in that direction and the fact that being a new widow she has two men chasing after her. Ed, the journalist, who I hope she dumps sometime soon, and the ever charming Lieutenant Lundy.

This book is good if the reader is looking for a general guide to personal healthcare. There are chapters on potential problems, but the information doesn't go into depth. This book is a general overview that just touches the surface.
Excellent source of information for women's health.......2004-02-09
I borrowed this book from the library because it was the only book that described vulvodynia, pain of the vulva. I was diagnosed with vulvodynia recently. In fact, it had 25 pages on it. This is an essential book for any woman, because all women sooner or later will experience health issues with their vagina, the more you know the better off you are!

Travel guide lite.......2006-03-24
I live in the Central New York region just east of the Finger Lakes. I work with people who live in the region and I road trip quite a bit in the area when the weather warms up, so I have a "mile-wide and an inch deep" knowledge of the area.
I consider this book a "lite" travel guide because it doesn't cover much of what's in the area, but it covers what it does in great depth. It focuses on what the cover says, and nothing more. It doesn't cover many eateries outside of the population centers, and skips a lot of the "hole in the wall" restaurants, diners, and stands that offer great food but are a bit off the beaten path.
If you want to focus on wineries and want some in depth knowledge about thoose wineries this is the book. Beyond that you will need to look elsewhere for information.

This book was very useful to have on vacation -- his restaurant reviews were a big help in terms of types of cuisine available and the winery reviews were very specific about what types of wines they produce and what he liked when he went tasting. It was also nice to know how formal restaurants were before you went.

Some Problems.......2004-10-20
It's a huge book, over 600 pages but there are a few problems.
1. A lot of years are skipped. For instance Upper Deck '92 is missing as well as '96 through '98. Every manufacturer seems to be missing years whether it be Donruss, Fleer, Ultra, Score, Stadium Club. You name it. A lot of traded series are also missing.
2. Don't plan on using this as a reference guide for any length of time because the pages start falling out practically the moment it first opened.
The solution for Beckett is simple. Don't include every card. Over half of the 1991 Score series is 2 cent cards. Just state that unlisted cards are 2 cents and you'd save yourself a couple of pages. The book would literally be half the size or less and then Beckett could include more sets.
Don't Buy.......2004-08-13
I think Beckett gets worse and worse every year. I am so upset with their magazines and their books. This books skips so many years. For example there is no Donruss 1991-2000 cards listed at all. Majority of my cards are those ones. So this book become very useless to me. It's just like their magazine they skip everything. I haven't been able to find a book yet that will tell me what the price of all my cards are. If you have any special insert cards, this book will not list them.
Beckett's remains the price guide for collecting older cards.......2004-07-31
Okay, here is the situation. Beckett's monthly price guides can barely keep up with the baseball cards that are produced each year, let alone all those surplus sets and special collectible cards that are flooding the market on a monthly basis. However, as a collector I am not concerned with the current deluge and am working on sets of older cards from those long forgotten days before Fleer and Donruss opened the floodgates. Those monthly price guides will certainly give you prices, but they are not going to be any help if you are trying to figure out which cards you need to complete a particular set that you are working on. I finally finished my 1966 Topps set, have six rather expensive cards left to complete a 1953 Topps set and a couple of dozen for both the 1962 and 1967 Topps sets. That means I need to know ALL of the cards so that when I hit the card shops and shows that I am prepared for dealers who have their cards organized by numbers, players, or random piles.
With the "Official Beckett Price Guide to Baseball Cards 2004" you have your best shot at finding out exactly what is out there for any sets that you are working on at the moment. If you need to know about the prices and you are not going the monthly guide route then the prices quoted here are going to be more valid the farther back in time you go. But the key thing here is that these guides list all the cards, including all the extras, inserts, special sets and the like from Bowman, Diamond Stars, Donruss, Fleer, Goudey, Play Ball, Score, Sportsflics, Topps. Upper Deck and whatever other companies have sprung up that I cannot remember off the top of my head (hopefully there will not be a test anytime soon).
Beckett remains the price guide I use to put together my want list for the next card show or for checking out on line auctions. This is especially important when a set has numbers missing (it happens), so that you can avoid desperately searching for cards that are not there (e.g., the 1953 Topps set has 274 cards from #1 Jackie Robinson to #280 Milt Bolling, so there are some numbers that just do not exist). As always, there is also a concise and informative introductory section that will be of use to anyone who considers collecting baseball cards a serious hobby (is there any other kind?). There are over 290,000 prices listed, but more importantly there are those boxes to check off your cards as you add them to your collection. Plus the portable size makes it easy to use on the road.

Good "Brain Food" Book.......2002-03-12
This isn't a "how to" book.. it's a picture book of examples of well designed pieces. It's great to flip through when you need a little inspiration. I find it quite useful - although I was disappointed that most of the work is dated 1996, 97, or 98 - especially for a book that is the best brochure design 2000. Other than that, it is a useful reference book for any designer, but if you're looking for a "How to Design" book, this isn't for you.
ok picture book.......2001-06-09
Fine and dandy stuff, this sizeable collection has good information, a bright layout and tasteful type, international representation, and the 411 on the stuff they use and how they figured it out... but this is a collection of 1997 designs for a book dated 2001. You can tell.
Huge & Excellent Reproduction.......2001-04-11

Rockport rocks.......2000-04-22
I have purchased a number in the "Best of" series that Rockport publishes for brochures and logos, and the latest in the brochure series will be a useful addition to any graphic designer's library. Number 5 in the brochure series shows great diversity in types and styles of fairly recent brochures. I find it helpful that Rockport divides the book up into sections that highlight specific types of brochures - i.e. service, institutional, product, etc. - so that I can look for trends within certain categories. A good source for ideas, and a way to see what is happening now in design across the country.

One of the best film books ever, but needs an update.......2006-06-12
Patrick McGilligan's thoroughly detailed biography of Robert Atlman is nothing short of one of the greatest film books of all time. McGilligan's style is exhaustive, yet easy to read, covering all the bases of Altman the man, his life and his films.
Even though it is apparent that McGilligan is a huge fan of Altman's work, he never writes with a bias. His analysis is totally fair and balanced, pointing out the both the failures and successes of both Altman the person and his films. By the end of the book, you really feel you have gotten to know the great filmmaker and have been along for the ride on all of his many exploits.
The only problem with the book is that it was published in 1989, and hasn't been updated since. While Altman's first golden period (the 1970s) is obviously well covered, we are deprived on McGilligan's analysis of Altman's second golden age (1992's "The Player" up to the present). After re-reading this book recently, I was left with a nagging desire to read McGilligan's take on Altman's career in the last 15 years. His thoughts on the twin triumphs of "The Player" and "Short Cuts," or on "Pret a Porter" (which is hinted at in the last chapter), or Altman's very personal "Kansas City" (the book has a heavy emphasis on Altman's KC upbringing), or Altman's ordeal over "The Gingerbread Man," and especially "Gosford Park" are needed.
Please, Mr. McGilligan, update this fantastic book!
