best book in a lng time.......2007-10-09
This is an outstanding book and I do reomened this book to all ages. It is a magical fairy tale and even a person who dosn't like fairy tales much would love this book. I read this book over two months ago. I've read many other books in that time. But I still can't get this story out of my head. I loved this book and will read it many more times still. This is the best story in a long time, I hope that you read it and if you do, KNOW that you will love it as much as I did.
The Goose Girl.......2007-10-05
The Goose Girl is an inspiring book. It is a journey for both the character and the reader, who experience change in their own lives. Never before have words so easy and enjoyable to read, strike me. That have uplifted me, and left me wanting more.
In the beginning, Ani is not confident about herself, and the position that she is asked to fulfill, like almost anyone. As she faces her future with the prince of a neighboring country, is betrayed by those she thought she could trust, and having to make an entirely new life out of something that did not seem possible, the reader is enticed into the companionship between Ani and her new friends, the suspense and loveliness of the blending of experiences. The life changes of the "Prima Dona" to a servant is not an easy task, for anyone. Whether you are going from junior high/middle school to high school, or raising your own children and trying to cope with the new challenges of being a parent. Everyone wishes that they could have the opportunity to hear the whisperings on the wind, listen to animals and have a bond tighter then humans do with each other.
This book for me was revealing, relaxing, enjoyable, and invigorating. It is not everyday that you are able to be pulled into a book that grabs you by the shoulders, and makes a mystery, suspense, love and comedy into an enjoyable book for any and all ages.
I've met Shannon Hale, and she is an amazing author. She is so "intone" with herself; as a woman, wife, friend, daughter, mother, etc. She is aware of the need for good, wholesome literature that makes you want to run through the fields and experience and view life as you've never seen before.
Enjoyable read.......2007-08-31
I read this book because I have three daughters and someone told me they would like it. Actually I really enjoyed it, so much so that I bought and read Enna Burning as well.
A Lovely Princess Tale.......2007-08-22
"The Goose Girl" may be looked at as two things. It is a tale about a princess, a retelling of an old Grimm tale (one that I have not yet encountered). It is also a sort of fantasy book including speech with animals and magic control.
And yet, "The Goose Girl" does not fall into the common, stereotypical traps set by these genres/types. It is a book that is remarkably enough not stale, with twists, excitements, and constant changes. It may be the simple story of a princess going through hardships to achieve her goal, but it has so much more than that. It has side characters that spice up the story, plot turns that make things different, and a comfortable pace. The magic and fantasy of the story do not control it, which means that lovers of reality will still be pleased by this story.
It's a well-written book with an interesting plotline and some very fun characters. But it has its flaws as well. "The Goose Girl" is an almost 400-paged book, and it certainly feels it at times. While there is an unobstructed flow, there are many points in the book where it grows tedious and begins to drag. This book could do with a good edit.
If you don't mind that it drags on a bit, it's really a great book. You don't have to love princesses or fantasy to enjoy this book. It's not that kind of a book. It's eloquent, enjoyable, and for any reader who can handle a bit of bulk. Enjoy.
Not Princess Fluff.......2007-07-15
Hale has a lovely writing style and the ability to create characters you can really rally behind. Ani's tranformation from shy and insignificant to regal was not done in a cliche way, and she remained true to her character (her slightly anxious character) all the way through. I enjoy introspective characters and Hale is excellent at creating them. Do not pass off Hale's work as "Princess Fluff" as all of her YA novels have a rich writing style, moral conflicts, and even a dose of uglyness (murders, battles, abandonment) that keeps her books feeling real, despite the magical elements.
Product Description
Ani shuddered. The city was as beautiful as a birthday cake from afar. It was not so friendly when one was out of luck. She glanced out the window toward her little room. It had never felt like a home, but it felt safer than any place she had known. Maybe after I return to Kildaree and all is set to right, she though, I'll come back here again and be queeen after all.

Graphic fairy tale.......2003-02-09
This book is bit graphic for young children--a horse's head is cut off and hung on a gate post. I do read this book to my second grade class but I do a bit of my own editing as I go along. Children love fairy tales and aside from the graphic content in a couple of places this book is a good bargain.

Book Description
As long as there have been vampires, there has been the Slayer. One girl in the all the world, to find them where they gather and to stop the spread of their evil and the swell of their numbers.
Around Sunnydale, they say a scarecrow saturated with Halloween rain will come alive and slaughter anyone in sight. (Lovely place, Sunnydale.) Buffy's best friends, Xander and Willow, used to think the tale was nonsense -- but after a few adventures with Buffy, they're not so sure.
Even without a maniacal scarecrow, a Sunnydale Halloween is a truly horrific happening. There are enough zombies and vampires about, ready to party hearty and eat some brains, to keep the Slayer and her friends up all night.
And then rain starts to fall....
Customer Reviews:
Very unique.......2007-08-06
I am a huge Buffy fan and I have read many of the novels. To be honest, when I read the book preview, I thought it sounded cheesy and I was convinced that I wouldn't like it. Boy was I wrong. I wound up really enjoying the story because it was so unique and the character development was quite good. I may even reread the book. I would definately recommend it!
This is Halloween (Rain).......2006-11-20
I really liked this one. Lots of pop culture refferances, and it looks like the leading villan ripped off Tim Burton.
A Fairly Entertaining Adaptation of the Series.......2005-11-04
Fans of the earlier seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer will certainly enjoy this novel based on the series. Published in 1997 it works from the series at that time. Willow still has a crush on Xander; meanwhile, Xander continues to pine for Buffy. Cordelia reigns supreme as the queen of Sunnydale High. The villain of the novel is interesting and the story itself is better than most of the episodes. Giles is not convinced that Halloween is a rest day for vampires like in later years but this is a minor detail. The work does fairly good job of catching the wit of the characters. This is great for those fans nostalgic for the good old days before Xander became a construction worker in love with a vengeance demon, Willow turned into a psychotic lesbian witch with a magic addiction and Buffy gained an annoying little sister.
Did the author ever watch the show?.......2005-07-23
I picked this book up at the dollar store and feel ripped off. Wow this was bad. It reminded me of fan fiction that was written by someone who had never seen the show but had heard about it.
The problems began with the premise. Halloween is supposed to be dead vamp wise. I was willing to let this go because it might have been written before that fact was established, I don't know.
The BIGGEST problem for me was the bad dialogue and the fact that for halloween Willow died her hair red from brown. They talked about how good she looked as a red head and how it looked better than her normal hair color. It was at that point I shut the book unable to read any more. The author had no idea what the characters even looked like. It was just such a shame.
maybe book burnings aren't so bad afterall.......2004-11-06
Buffy didn't move to Sunnydale until half way through the school year.
Therefore, she was still living in Los Angeles at the time this book supposedly took place.
Glaring continuity problems seem to plague all the Buffy books. The fact that the authors aren't given permission to advance the storyline of the show in any meaningful way make the books the equivalent of really boring filler episodes of the show. Only the books aren't as well-written and Sarah Michelle Gellar isn't around to salvage the tripe.
Reading the authors attempts at dialogue is funny (laughing at them funny) at first, but then it just gets painful. The book reads like overly earnest fan fiction and all the characters become insufferable because of their sappiness and led balloon one-liners.
I don't know Nancy Holder and Christopher Golden personally, but reading this filled me with a strong dislike and sense of pity for both of them.

If the pace of your life or depths of your depression leave you lacking in body and soul, this book can help you feel whole again. Jennifer Louden encourages you to assemble and draw on personal rituals, journals and sanctuaries that can add comfort and breathing space to your life. Some are obvious (herbal baths, flowers) or seem too silly, New Age, or time-consuming to tickle every fancy (blow bubbles in traffic jams, chant affirmations). Many more seem sublime and creative. But that's her point: pick and choose what works best for you, but do take some actions to make your life happier.
Book Description
With over 200 prescriptions for giving yourself a break, this book helps the reader to sort out guilty feelings about self–nurture and to define her comfort/self–nurture needs.
In this book the author delivers a host of creative and comforting programmes like the self–care schedule, creative selfishness, creating a comfort network, body delights, a personal sanctuary, the comfort journal, bathing pleasures and comfort rituals. Organised by topic and cross–referenced throughout, this guidebook is designed to appeal to women of all ages. The new edition has been revised and updated for modern women.

much needed.......2005-11-20
I am another who bought *another* copy of this book...someone borrowed mine and I never got it back. Sometimes we need reminded of the little things. This is full of ways to do that and some may sound silly but it works. Have it on gift lists for a few people I know.
writing instructor for healing and self-discovery.......2005-02-28
I keep buying this book over and over - I have given it to friends in crises and at turning points. I can't say enough good things about The woman's comfort book. It is a resource that you will never tire of!!
A treat!.......2003-05-20
I must have given this book half a dozen times as a gift to friends or family members who were in need of a little nurturing, or who needed an excuse to spend a little more time on themselves. This book has dozens of ideas for activities to help you through a day, and even a little categorized index to look for a project based on how you're feeling at the moment.
A real treasure! Give it to a loved one by itself, or in combination with a nice journal or blank book and a couple of fun pens (I recommend purple), and she will know you care about her. Better yet, buy one for yourself.
Wonderful book!.......2000-03-29
This book helped me through a very difficult time in my life. It offers simple ways to learn to treat yourself well. Often women don't give themselves the time they deserve---this book definitely helps. Every woman should own a copy of this book.
Everyone ought to have this book!.......1999-11-18
This book was referred to me about 6 years ago by my psychologist I was seeing at the time. It is the most wonderful book I have ever owned. Guidance on how to comfort your self, mind, and soul from what you will need to get started, whether it is a candle, bubble bath, etc. To how to do the comforting! I have given a copy to all of my girlfriends! (I highly recommend all of Ms. Louden's books) Enjoy!
Customer Reviews:
every recipe I have tried is THE BEST!.......2007-05-28
I have tried quite a few recipes in this book, and have to say that this cookbook is one of my all-time favorites. Every single recipe is delicious. Don't worry that you can't find Tommy Tang's Thai Seasoning in the local asian markets; he lists the ingredients in the glossary, so you can approximate your own version... garlic, black & white ground pepper, chili powder and cayenne. The recipes are rich, flavorful, clearly written, original and well-rounded, except for dessert. When you love savory and spicy foods as much as I do, who cares about dessert anyway?!
We don't eat Pad Thai in restaurants anymore, because after we tried Tommy Tang's version in our kitchen, nothing else comes close to being so fresh and wonderful. My coconut curry favorite is the Green Curry Salmon... what a treat! Another can't miss authentic dish is the Green Papaya salad. But there is much more, and I'm sure I will eventually make every dish in this cookbook.
Tang Devotee.......2001-08-31
I have prepared many of the recipes in this cookbook. It is my Thai cuisine bible and I have never prepared anything but something ( or many things)that were not rated superb by everyone at my dinner table. Tang's recipe for tom kha kai is amazing, though I cut the coconut milk ,two thirds coconut milk and one third water. I have not found a light coconut milk that is worth using. His pad thai recipe is difficult but good if done correctly and I made the Salmon with Kaffir Lime Sauce last week and it was amazing! I have other Thai and Southeast Asian cookbooks, but none compare to Tommy Tang's. I have gone to his restaurants in LA and Pasadena, and they have both been great.
Basic Thai and a Little More.......1999-12-15
This is a book full of tremendous recipes, from classic Thai curries to superb innovative takes on dishes such as mee krob. An excellent introduction to Thai cuisine for anyone interested in cooking or eating! Although Tommy gets creative at times, this should not be confused with the Asian fusion approach which is so fashionable in 1999 --it is truly Thai cuisine. Buy this book if you can find it! Your taste buds will thank you.
The most unique and enjoyable Thai cookbook on the market........1998-12-01
As a person who never cooks, after eating at Tommy Tangs restaurants in Pasadena and Hollywood,I had to rush out and buy the cookbook.WOW!!!!!!What a book!!!!!!I found the recipes to be well written and easy to follow, and the pictures were absolutely mouthwatering, like the dishes at the restaurant.Since then, I have eaten at many Thai restaurants and purchased Thai cookbooks and have yet to find one that is remotely close in quality to Tommy Tangs. The cookbook is absolutely the bible of Thai cooking and a must for any kitchen.
No Tangs You.......1997-12-08
Reading this cookbook one has to wonder, is this about food, or is this about Tommy? I've eaten for several years at his restaurant (far better 10 years ago than now) and honestly, the recipes in the book are less than reproducible. There is a recipe for Tiger Roll-about as Thai as Pizza. The pictures are good, but the Tommy's tenor of 'Ain't I great and witty?' makes me gag. Sorry...give me a good recipe for a good Lemon Grass soup and you've got a devotee. I pour over Pad Thai recipes, this one just doesn't cut it. I'll eat at the restaurant (especially on Drag Night) but I won't cook from the book.

Customer Reviews:
Some amazing clocks.......2007-02-08
I really enjoyed this one. You won't find a large selection, but the ones he has included are out standing. Be warned, these are not something a beginner could whip up right away, as they are quite detailed. But i think well worth the work in the end.
My only complaint, a small one is that some of the drawings seem a little "dirty", the lines where not as clear.
But if you enjoy some detailed scroll projects, you'll probably like this one.
Not Bad.......2003-01-20
I found this book to be not exactly what I had expected. The clocks are indeed antique, but I personally found them to be not very attractive looking, and I probably wouldn't really take the time to make any of them. Except for maybe 1 that was neat. The patterns appear to be fairly accurate although a bit tough to follow. A good challenge!
Advanced Scroll Saw Clocks.......2000-01-11
Having built 2 of the 5 clocks shown in the book, I can attest the dimentions are fairly accurate. What I really enjoyed about the clocks was the brief history he gives at the begginning of every clock. It gives you something to think about while you are spending the hours of tedious scroll sawing. I did not find these clocks to be overly difficult to build, but they were complex. I enjoyed the two clocks I built and am planning a third.
Book Description
Far from being mere antiquarian or sentimental curiosities, the rebuilt or reused fortresses of the Rhine reflect major changes in Germany and Europe during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Taylor begins The Castles of the Rhine with a synopsis of the major political, social and intellectual changes that influenced castle rebuilding in the nineteenth century. He then focuses on selected castles, describing their turbulent histories from the time of their original construction, through their destruction or decay, to their rediscovery in the 1800s and their continued preservation today.

Customer Reviews:
This Review Will Be Short Because I Want To Get Back to the Book........2006-09-01
This book arrived today and I sat down to glance through it. Two hours later, I'm taking a break to write this review, but it was hard to put the book down. First, as I did, read Cast of Killers and A Deed of Death. Then, when you are hooked on the Taylor murder, get William Desmond Taylor: A Dossier, Bruce Long's marvelous collection of clippings from the newspapers and journals of the time. It is a work you must have. Reading Taylor's own words and those of his contemporaries, as quoted in the press, makes the murder seem almost as recent as the big murder cases of our day. Also, you learn an enormous amount about life and mores in America and Hollywood in the 1920s. Even if the Taylor murder doesn't interest you particularly, if you enjoy true crime stories and/or silent films, I recommend the book for details and atmosphere.
Comprehensive Recounting.......2004-10-15
This is a collection of newspaper clipping both before the murder of W. D. Taylor as well as after. It will help you paint a picture of the man behind the name as well as introduce you to the times in which he lived.
The book is too expensive for most but if you are a Taylor devotee, your pickings are slim in regards to tomes being written about him.
