Not everyday do I get to read a book so profound and beautiful as this. Character development is superb and the prose is simple yet elegant. The storyline, furthermore, is poignant and seamless. I had this book in my purse while traveling in Paris, and the last 30 or so pages, which I read impossibly quickly sitting in a subway car, moved me to tears, not because it was sad but because it just touched my heart to the core. This is one of those books that stays with you, becoming the voice of reason and humanity in your mind. This is a book you would want to give to everyone you love so they could experience what you have experienced.

I found this book very touching. The main character is an amazing, noble man. I didn't want this tale to end. I found myself writing down sentences from the book, thinking that I would send them to friends who would also find them touching and perfect. Bring a hanky for this one. Another reviewer said this book would make a good movie, and I agree.

A touching book about friendship in the gulags (work camps) of Siberia, The Industry of Souls by Martin Booth is a wonderfully written novel with an unforgettable story that examines the most basic human emotions of love and hope during the worst of times.

The book follows the life of Alexander Bayliss, a British citizen who is wrongly accused of espionage by the KGB and is sentenced to 25 years of hard labor in Siberia. The book centers around the friendships and bonds he makes with the six other men in Work Unit 8. Even in the terrible living and working conditions of the gulag, the seven men help and support each other in order to maintain their optimism and sanity. Almost all were betrayed into the gulags either by their acquaintances or by their country. Over the course of two decades, they find understanding and trust once more in their comrades.

This book explores themes of love, friendship, and freedom in the unusual setting of the gulag. The setting helps bring out the themes because it is often only during the worst of times when one truly comes to appreciate what they would normally take for granted. Martin Booth delves deep into these themes, showing us that even in the most hellish places, love and hope can exist.

In this way, what I found to be the most touching was the friendship between Shurik (Alexander's nickname) and Kirill, the leader of Work Unit 8. The events that unfold bring the reader to ponder the value of a true comrade. They make the reader wonder how far they would go for a friend.

At times the book is heartbreaking. Other times, the book leaves the reader furious at the injustices of Communist Russia. However, I don't believe Martin Booth was trying to reveal the corruption that put fear in the lives of all Russians during that period of time. I think his main message was that even in bad times and in the midst of such corruption, true friendship can help you pull through. As Shurik said himself, "I owed... my allegiance to my comrades, not to my country. Friends are more important than flags." A thoroughly compelling read, the reader is drawn into the story and doesn't want to leave. I give this book five stars.

Uplifting........2003-11-30

An Englishman is sent to a Russian gulag on trumped up charges in his 30's, and serves his 25 year term. Now he is 80, living in a Russian village with a couple who treat him as a father. Reflections on his life, both gulag and village, are interspersed with the events of the day celebrating his birthday. This is a feel good, uplifting story. While the facts of gulag life are there, few of the gulag scenes are terribly disturbing, and the only one I connected with on a deeply emotional level was one in which the Englishman recounts the daydream he escapes into to remain sane. Instead the comradeship and humanity of the work team of political prisoners is emphasized. After reflection, I have concluded this is an honest story, and to be both honest and uplifting - as well as interesting - is always an achievement. As in Islands of Silence, Booth seems to have a wonderful empathy for the old.

A book to remember.......2003-06-08

I was loaned this book by a friend who bought it at a dollar store, and it sat on the shelf for a long time before I finally had enough time (between other books and general workload) to read it. I wish I had read it sooner.

I honestly can say that this book touched me in a way that few books do. Not only did it inspire me to contemplation, it also touched me on an emotional level. The story of Shurik and his years in the gulag and the lessons he learned (both in the mining camp and in his time in Myshkino) really pulled me in and imparted wonderfully written words of wisdom upon me.

I think everyone should read this book, really. I can honestly say, out of all the books I have ever read, this is my absolute favourite. I give all my praise to Martin Booth and the Industry of Souls.

I loved the early novels in this series, and they were a great inspiration to me in writing my own historical novels, Rashi's Daughters, Book 1: Joheved and Rashi's Daughters, Book II: Miriam. But they've become less and less interesting, with this most recent one a downright disappointment (especially the ending). I doubt I'll even read the next one.

Castles, Secret Passages, Witches and Old Curses!.......2006-06-04

What more can you ask for in a medieval mystery? This is by far the best Catherine LeVendeur mystery! In it we have Catherine and her family going back to the home of her mother because of a summons received by her grandfather. When they arrive they find a castle that is full of her relations, but it is also full of secrets. It seems that no one is telling the truth. Catherine and Edgar, along with her sister Agnes and her ward Margaret, set out to uncover all the secrets and therefore solve the family problems that everyone thinks are being experienced as a result of an ancient curse placed on their family. The book is a page-turner! There is a lot of action going on, and of course a time-constraint as well, since the well in the keep is going dry. Reading this book is like taking a time-flight back to medieval France.

The Witch in the Well is my first time reading a Catherine LeVendeur mystery. Catherine and her family are visiting her brother when they are suddenly called by their great grandfather to come to the family castle Boisvert. All the descendants of the LeVendeur family must be there. It seems that far back in the family lineage that started Catherine's family, someone married a fairy who now resides in a well and if the well goes dry then the family will die. Adonnen is the fairy that guards the family and lives in the well.

Catherine doesn't know what to make of the family legend, but she starts to take it seriously when a messenger that her great grandfather sent ends up dead, and a mysterious lady keeps appearing to her. Is it Adonnen? At Boisvert she discovers that the women who reside at Boisvert are barren, and her great grandfather has not aged in twenty years.

I enjoyed the fantasy and mystery of "The Witch in the Well," Sharan Newman is a wonderful storyteller and writes a mystery without making it a detective story. Another reader said that there wasn't much of a point for Catherine to be at her brother's castle in the beginning, and all I have to say to that is that characters in books and movies move from setting to setting, otherwise the books would be boring. It's part of telling the story.

Catherine LeVendeur is a wonderful character, she's smart, witty, and an equal with her husband. Catherine is also a Christian and easily accepts her cousin Solomon though he is Jewish. Throughout the book the author makes a big deal that Solomon is Jewish, I really didn't see what the big deal was. I guess it wasn't a good thing to be Jewish back in the 12th century. Overall I enjoyed the history, the legend and the characters of "The Witch in the Well." It's a great historical novel.

not as fun as her other works.......2005-03-29

I started this book with the same excitement that I have read all of the Catherine LeVendeur books, but this one left me sorely lacking. It didn't seem to have the same flow or intelligence of most of the other books, nor was there as much mystery as there was merely adventure. By now I am totally invested in the different characters populating her books, and I definitely wasn't disappointed to see more interaction between the siblings. However, as another poster put it, the ending was so disjointed it was almost like someone else wrote it after reading the last page of the previous chapter. It also left me with the feeling that this was the end of the series, which I hope is not the case.

I visit Sharan's website www.sharannewman.com and there was no information about upcoming books, but I certainly hope this isn't the end of Catherine LeVendeur. I want to see how their changing roles can mesh into a new story. Don't leave us hanging Sharan!

I have read this book five years ago, great thanks to my wife. If you can read Spanish - read this gem, this book in English does not exist.

I had enlarged colon and went to three different doctors who were saying the same thing and prescribing the same drugs which weren't helping, then I read this book... I have not had a stomach pain since... I have not had a cold, a flu or even high temperature in five years as well - I forgot what the words doctor and pill mean. I feel great and I have a lot of energy. This book has changed my life; it can change yours too...

Traditional medicine is a scam - it is a business to make money and they do not care about your health!

In a nutshell: Manuel Lezaeta Alcharan lived in the first half of 20th century and is a legend in Chile because he has cured many terminal patients. His "thermal body doctrine" as he calls it, is based on three main principles: first - our stomachs are not made to process meat and different types of processed food; second - our skin is the third lung and a third kidney and it plays a major role in eliminating toxins from the body; third - `the thermal doctrine" - the way body regulates the temperatures inside and outside.

He was studying medicine in Chile when he got very sick - gonorrhea, which was incurable at that time. He stopped studying and went around the country one last time and was getting ready to die when he met a German monk - Padre Tadeo de Wisent, who cured him in two month and whose methods are based on works of great German doctors: Priessnitz, Kneipp, Kuhne, Rikli and Just. Manuel stayed with the priest for nine years and learned his ways... He went back to study afterwards, but not to finish his career as a doctor - to become a lawyer. He wrestled many sick people out of hands of traditional medicine and saved their lives. He had to go to court and fought for years against Chilean traditional medical establishment for the right to publish this book and at the end the Supreme Court ruled in his favor because his methods cannot harm the body - they are natural.

A stomach of a tiger is made to process raw meat, it is short and strong, and it sucks all the nutrients out of meat and gets it out fast. Our stomachs are similar to monkey stomachs, who eat fruits and nuts in small quantities all day long. Human stomach digests mango in two hours without any extra effort, and it digests meat in six to sixteen hours depending on type of meat and the way it was cooked. Being so long in our stomachs, meat rots and instead of nutrients the blood takes toxins the body. The same goes for all the chemicals and toxins we eat with manufactured and canned foods, cakes, artificial sweeteners, this list can go on and on.

Now, a civilized man eats all the wrong food and every time he feels cold - he puts on more cloth - thus closing the pores of the skin through which great amount of toxins is eliminated. You see the picture? - We stuff our bodies with toxins and we close the way they are eliminated. I cannot possibly explain all parts of the theory in this short review. There is the law of temperatures, how to bring your skin back to life, second part of the book explains how to cure different diseases.

To learn how to become healthy you will need to read the book. This may sound like hype to you - but it is not - it is how exited and grateful I am this book exists.

I lowered my cholesterol from 290 to 246 after using the recipes in this book for 2 months. It has really helped me out tremendously, I just feel better. The recipes are quite tasty and easy to follow. My favorites so far are the black bean soup, the 2-bean enchiladas, and the Apple crisp. I like the fact that the recipes are separated by the seasons as it makes it easier to know where to look when I want to make something for a hot summer day, or cold winter day. I highly recommend this book if you need to change your eating habits to a more healthy option!

This is the book that finally got me cooking........1998-02-25

I'm a total beginner in the kitchen and I'm glad I found this book. It's so fully of clear, valuable information, that the recipes seem almost a bonus. The only problem I have is remembering everything I read and it's sometimes a little hard to locate it again. I'm not sure the organization by seasons is better than organization by meal or food type, such as soups, entrees,etc. or ingredients, i.e., beans, greens, etc. One thing, despite some of Dr. Ornish's provocative book titles, his integrity comes through and apparently his regime really works. Ask people like Bill Moyers who started following Ornish's program after severe heart problems.

I just bought this book. I have a shelf of vegan/vegetarian cookbooks, and am thrilled to find one with recipes that are practical, easy and above all, flavorful. Have already made five recipes, with great results. I would love to have a software edition, so I can index ingredients for shopping lists--my main bugaboo--I hate making shopping lists! Bon Appetit

Not for serious collectors.......2006-12-23

This book is geared towards cheaper (i.e. mass produced shell and glass) cameos and not enough on hardstone or lava cameos. It glosses over technique and history, which are essential to understanding value in the market place. The price guide is useless. The prices seem random and don't take workmanship or the marketplace into account. Is the cameo being offered for sale at a flea market? An auction house? A high-end antique jewelry shop in an urban area? On Ebay? Those are all distinct venues that generate different price points because the customer base is different. I was also disappointed that most of the cameos featured were of average quality and quite common, and not the high quality type that interest serious collectors.

This isn't as comprehensive as some other books on cameos but it has short, helpful explantions that augment other books I have on the subject.

Lots of pictures, little content.......2003-05-31

This book contains photos of cameos made from many different materials, from plastic to shell to glass. But of the 160 pages it contains, only around 30 pages give any information about cameos. The rest of the pages are photos with prices. It really is just a price guide.

Good book for price guide but............2000-05-20

The book is exactly what it says it is, a price guide. There isn't any history, how to tell what time the cameo is from, what the cameo is made of etc. Not exactly what I wanted but will come in handy for an idea of prices.

Bizarre and Thought-Provoking.......2001-09-10

Will Patton's work on screen or on stage or as an audio performer is defined by his singular ability to become any person with such clarity and believability that it is truly astounding. Also remarkable is this amazing little book. Bizarre and even frightening at times, this small book chronicles a pain-filled, often incoherent journey. Perhaps one of his greatest gifts is his ability to truly put thoughts down on paper, no matter how strange they may seem. His journey takes us through his vagrancy as a street drunk, drug use, unusual thought processes, strange almost mystical experiences, to contemplation of suicide. These jottings may shock some and impress others. But no matter the effect, everyone should respect this writer for being willing to share such private thoughts and ideas. Bravo! Bravo! Encore! Encore!

Religion and dentistry meet in the Bible Belt..........1999-10-19

Had a truer author kept a journal and had a heart to break he wouldn't match the desolate landscape of Will Patton's brain. Although I DID crave a greater definition in time within the editing of his thoughts, there was no lack of satisfaction in this thought provoking read. This tiny booklet is carried thoughtfully as a reference and reminder that anyone can be alone in a crowd, and that no one likes to be pushed into a pretensive state of happiness when all he can see is his own vision of reality. I write this review with admiration that Will Patton had the guts to even bare himself to the public and to allow himself to be naked this much. It is Baudelaire's Evil Flowers without the vagueness of poetry, and it is a great relief that his Southern expressions come forth without that usual aire of pretense. Perhaps he will consider setting forth more of the same someday without the harsh editing.
