Book Description
". . . when I look I see an open gate where there should be none. And what longs to enter through it, darkness and devastation. And I can feel that evil longing emptying out the good of Shibboleth, pulling on it with every rancid breath as it stands waiting for the gate to open farther."
The Messenger of Magnolia Street tells the haunting story of three childhood friends who reunite to fight the unnamed presence that is slowly draining their beloved town of goodness and light. Nehemiah Trust fled his hometown of Shibboleth twelve years ago, after the death of his mother. Now chief of staff for a powerful senator, Nehemiah has washed his hands of Shibboleth. But one night his older brother Billy and childhood friend Trice appear at his front door. Something is wrong, they tell him. Nehemiah is needed back home.
This mesmerizing novel of love awakened, purpose abandoned, and legacy reclaimed begins as slow and easy as a southern Sunday, but as the town of Shibboleth begins to sense the approaching darkness, the three friends must race against time to save the lifeblood of the place they call home. The solution requires a willingness to sacrifice everything.
Customer Reviews:
---Couldn't put this book down until I finished it---.......2006-10-14
I found THE MESSENGER OF MAGNOLIA STREET to be both intriguing and eerie, and a very magical story. I plan to read it again soon because there are so many nuances in the story and I want to make sure that I didn't miss anything.
It's the tale of hard times that come to a cozy little town in Alabama called Shibboleth. The changes to the town take place over a twelve-year period and seemed to have started after Nehemiah Trust left the town to work for a senator in Washington, D. C. Nehemiah was bright, kind and admired by everyone. The changes to the town were slow but a feeling of darkness, and in many people, forgetfulness, was sliding into their minds and thoughts. The town and citizens were becoming parched and dry just like the land around them.
Not everyone was completely aware of the changes, but Nehemiah's brother Billy knew some odd things were taking place. When his best friend, Trice told him they needed to get Nehemiah to come home he agreed. Trice had always had some kind of psychic insight and Billy also longed for his brother's presence. Nehemiah reluctantly returns to his hometown and the childhood friends reunite in a bond to save Shibboleth.
The characters in "Messenger" are wonderful. The story is told by an angel who calls himself the Recorder and he sometimes tells us what God has to say. For instance, Aunt Kate is a bigger than life and kind-hearted woman who owns the local diner. She offers food and good will to all that need it. At one point we are told that everyone loves Kate, and the Recorder tells us that God loves her too!
I can't wait to see what River Jordan writes next!
If Stephen King wrote Christian fiction, it might be like this.......2006-06-06
At times, this novel seems like something Stephen King might write: some horrible evil thing is about to destroy a town, and a trio of childhood friends must find a way to fight it. There are two major differences between this book and a Stephen King book, however: 1) the religious tone, and 2) the details (or lack thereof) of the story.
The Messenger of Magnolia Street is definitely religious in tone; if I had a dime for every time a character is saved by prayer or divine intervention, or prayer or divine intervention or faith is alluded to, or God pops up as a sort of supporting character, I would have enough money to go out and buy another book. A reader who enjoys Christian fiction, who enjoys reading books that feature angels and miracles, might enjoy this book much more than I did.
The other nagging feature of this book is in the lack of details. Several of the characters don't seem to have jobs, and many aspects of their lives just aren't described. Even the evil thing itself is not specifically described until the end. The story was still compelling, however, and in some ways very well-written.
Messenger delivers .......2006-06-06
Thank you for the adventure and most importantly for the reminder that sometimes a parched soul needs only a droplet of dream to be renewed. Just like the folks of Shibboleth craved Nehemiah's stories, so it is for souls like mine. And, Messenger does the trick. It takes you to another place and TIME, but drops you off back at home - with a whole new perspective. I swear I saw a little gold dust in the sand hugging my feet just as I closed the cover. This story is as captivating as the intriguing, beautiful cover promises.
My visit was too short!.......2006-05-01
Shibbleth is not on any map; there are no GPS coordinates, but there is a guide book. In The Messenger of Magnolia Street, Author, River Jordan takes you there; she shows you where to look, then leaves to wander its streets. River Jordan writes with a southern style that reflects small town influence. Her deep faith is evident in tale of the classic battle of good and evil.
The Messenger Of Magnolia Street.......2006-04-16
I loved this book!! River Jordan writes with the descriptive qualities of Truman Capote. She makes you feel you are envolved as all of the events as they unfold. This is a "can't put down" read, so make sure you have a quiet nook and time to read about all the good people in Shibboleth!
Rivers style is very easy to read and you find yourself engrossed in the characters. I was left hanging on the edge of my seat in total anticipation of events swirling around in this wonderful story.
It is a story of good and evil and how each character had a part in bringing a positive outcome.
Please please read this book!! It is the feel-good book of the year. It made me feel there was hope in this world.
Book Description
Entering into service as housekeeper for the distinguished investigator Sherlock Holmes and his associate Dr. Watson, Mrs. Hudson expands her duties beyond keeping things tidy.
The great detective's latest client is a traveler recently returned from the Far East-and nearly killed under mysterious circumstances. He says he's under a Sumatran curse that will end his life.
While Holmes and Watson seek a less superstitious solution to the man's dilemma, Mrs. Hudson and Flottie, the orphan girl in her care, take it upon themselves to investigate the case. They are determined to solve the mystery-even if it entails pointing Mrs. Hudson's employers in the right direction.
Customer Reviews:
Confusing.......2005-10-29
As a long-time fan of anything to do with Sherlock Holmes, I was really looking forward to reading this novel about the little known Mrs. Hudson. Mr. Davies main characters and storyline were very plausable, but the final pages with the finale was confusing, unbelievable and loaded with character explanations that could have been incorporated within the main pages. I'm sure I'll read "The Malabar Stone" but have my doubts things will improve.
A Mrs. Hudson Who Upstages the Great Holmes.......2005-09-25
I hope this book will become the first of a series. Martin Davies gives us a fresh and innovative look at the housekeeper of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. She is an extraordinary character, kind and caring, but at the same time, shrewd, perceptive, and capable of brilliant deductive thinking. She never becomes a rival to Holmes, but in her own subtle way she provides many of the insights and clues that lead the great detective to his solution to the puzzle at hand.
Davies is adept at creating endearing characterizations and evoking the atmosphere of Edwardian London with its fog-shrowded cobblestone streets, gaslights and sinister alleyways. This is an irresistable treat for all fans of Sherlockiana.
And Whatever Is Left, However Unlikely, Will Be Dinner..........2005-07-12
I actually purchased this novel with a certain amount of trepidation-because I have one Mrs. Hudson novel (not by this author!) on my shelves, and try as I may, I just can't seem to get into it. But I liked the write-up on this novel, and as this was Mr. Davies first attempt, I felt I should at least give him a chance. I'm glad I did.
The story is told through the narration of a young girl named the unusual sobriquet of "Flotsam", called tenderly "Flottie". She has came along with Mrs. Hudson to keep house for two unusual gentlemen: Sherlock Holmes & Dr. John H. Watson. Flottie has a past with a rather disreputable man, alias for the moment, Maurice Orlando Fogarty, AKA, Melmoth. He seems eager to have the young girl let him know how Holmes is doing in his latest case, which seems to involve a Sumatra Curse. (My only ding: Sorry, Martin, but the Giant Rat Story IS getting old. The one in Resurrected Holmes, by Paula Volsky will always be my favorite. On the plus side, this is a new twist that I will guarantee is original, and not bad. )
But Mrs. Hudson has her own ideas about the case, and they don't exactly square with The Great Detective's own. One thing is certain-murders are being committed by strange devices, and SOMEBODY is not what they seem. Is the client lying? If so, why? Why is Fogarty so mixed up in this that he tries to bribe Flottie by telling her he has found her long-lost brother, but he's a dope addict and will die if she doesn't cooperate? And does Mrs. Hudson REALLY beat Holmes at his own game?
Tell you what. Are you looking for a really good reading experience? Then buy the book, read it, and find out! This is one book that The Raven has very little bad to say about. Martin Davies, my hat's off to you. Quoth the Raven...
Very good read.......2005-03-30
I was expecting a so-so pastiche with this book, but I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the characters, and they held my interest to the end.
This is a good story.
For fans of the Mrs. Jeffries mysteries .......2004-11-01
Homeless and hungry Flotsam tries to steal a rotting cabbage but the grocer's son Scraggs catches her. He turns her over to housekeeper Mrs. Hudson, who sees something in the orphan and takes her into service as a maid. Mrs. Hudson insures that Flotsam is educated in the domestic arts and the three R's. When her employer commits suicide Mrs. Hudson takes a job as housekeeper to Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson; she brings Flotsam along to keep her safe and secure.
One night a man with one eye and a scar on his face and wearing a cowl, comes calling with a note saying his master wants to meet with Mr. Holmes. The next day Nathaniel Moran asks the famous detective for his help. He is clearly frightened because he believes he is under a Sumatran curse caused when he and his two business partners disrespected their gods. Several people connected with their enterprise in Sumatra are dead and Nathaniel hopes Holmes can break the curse. Holmes believes a human is killing people but before he can solve the case, Moran's partners die. It takes Mrs. Hudson to help the great detective solve the spirit's curse.
Readers who are fans of the Mrs. Jeffries mysteries will want to read MRS. HUDSON AND THE SPIRITS' CURSE. Although Sherlock Holmes gets the glory, it is Mrs. Hudson working behind the scenes who solves the case. Her relationship with Flotsam is more like mother-daughter than upper and lower servant. The protagonist has a heart of gold beneath her gruff exterior and readers will take her into their hearts. Martin Davies take on Sherlock Holmes will shake up die hard fans of the master detective.

Great Book!
Amazing stories, great intro by Dr. Upledger.......2007-05-09
This is the second copy of this book that I purchased for a friend considering Craniosacral Therapy. The short stories of actual experiences of practioners done in the 'Chicken Soup' style of a few pages per story is great. Reading it is much like eating peanuts, you do not want to stop!!

In Red Hot Lovers, authors Debbie and Steve Cornewell put the spice back into your relationship with a collection of racy recipes for two. Customer Reviews:
Cooking in the Nude is nothing more than a misleading title.......2001-02-10
I ordered this book with high expectations which were quickly dispelled after opening the book. I guess the title is justified by a mild twist on words(ie. "Appeteaser") becuase I find no other reason for it. However, the fact that this piece of garbage(which I returned so minus one of those) has sold over 400, 000 copies has motivated me to wrie my own book. Thanks.
A note on safety.......1999-04-03
Sure, cook in the nude. Just wear an apron if you are working with hot grease. Be well.

Cooking in the Nude: Quickies comes with a warning on the back cover: "While impromptu passion in the dining room can be fun, we must advise you to be 'Ready for Action' before you start 'Fooling Around.' Be sure you read both these sections before you try anything." In Quickies, authors Debbie and Steve Cornwell offer up a slew of recipes that can be prepared in an hour or less (how you spend the time you've saved is up to you). Obviously, the Cornwells have written this cookbook in the spirit of fun, and with corny puns for recipe names such as Halibut My Place, Fetish-ini, or Caesar and Please Her Salad--plus goofy tips on seduction--they've succeeded in making Quickies, one in a series of Cooking in the Nude cookbooks, as much fun to read as it is to cook from.
Book Description
This unique cookbook is chock full of fun and playful recipes for two that can be prepared in under an hour. QUICKIES has creative dishes such as Chicken Porno Bleu, Promiscuous Prawns, and Fondue Me. Within all the innuendo and double entendres are elegant yet easy dishes.

Good Cooking.......2000-04-17
This book has some great recipes, it is one of the first cooking for 2 books I bought. The names are a bit wimsical (A Grape Fantasy, Lovers Lure, Vealing Lusty) which makes the index a little chalenging but the actual dish is in parenthesis. The recipes are also listed in a subject index (beef, chicken, etc.). There is a pantry list that has common ingredients in the recipes that makes stocking easy, and the recipes themselves are very clear, easy, and quick as the title sugests. There are categories for appetizers, salads, dressings, entrees, and vegetables. Each main dish has a suggested menu using other recipes in the book if you are uncomfortable planning your own, and they work fairly well, though I must say that the wine recomondations are not the best. There is no nutritional information. All in all this is an excellent book and I think you'll be very pleased.
Book Description
What do Charlie Chaplin, Ulysses S. Grant, Franz Liszt, Al Capone, George Sand, and Sharon Stone have in common? The love of a fine cigar. Barnaby Conrad III, author of The Martini and an avid fan of cigars himself, has dedicated his new book to the poetic, historical, and artistic pursuit of this wonderful, timeless passion. Drawing upon examples from art, film, literature, and politics, The Cigar presents a lushly illustrated, fascinating social history, honoring the cigar's origins and development, as well as its sexy and everlasting allure. Witty and elegant, The Cigar is the perfect gift for male or female cigar aficionados.
Customer Reviews:
Finally, a book that actually understands Cigar Cuisine!.......2003-04-08
There are tons of cigar books out there, but this is the first I've found that actually explains how to cook with cigars. The rest of the book is great of course, wouldn't expect any less from Conrad, but the recipes are really where it starts to shine above the others. Unfortunately there is no mention of the cigar burrito (one of my personal favorite dishes), but all of the dishes I've tried have been great. This will definitely give those who complain about the "smell" of cigars something to complain about! To quote the note that came on the cover when this book was given to me, bon appetit.
get your torch and light up your cohiba.......1998-03-25
i picked up this book wanting to know more about cigars. this book did not disappoint. it was very informative and useful. the photography was excellent, so excellent, in fact, that looking at all those stogies made my mouth water. so sit down with a nice glass of cognac, a nice cuban, and read "The Cigar".

Book Description
Italian playwright Carlo Gozzi (1720-1806) is best known for his plays that have famously been adapted into opera librettos. Puccini's final opera, Turandot, was based on a play by Gozzi. Prokofiev's The Love of Three Oranges is also based on a Gozzi play. Richard Wagner's first opera, Die Feen, is based on Gozzi's La Donna Serpente. Mozart's The Magic Flute contains many elements that are similar to Gozzi's plays. Gozzi was the most successful playwright in 18th century Venice. This is the first full biography in English of this major figure in the history of world theater. He is well known for reviving commedia dell'arte, an ancient form of Italian improvisational theater that had fallen out of favor before Gozzi's time: In this way his plays soon became the most popular in Venice and other parts of Italy.
