Book Description
World-renowned dark fantasy artist Brom in this illustrated novel intimately combines his dramatic storytelling with his uniquely arresting images, to create a work of striking imagination, a world where fairy-tale tradition collides with vileness and depravity, love and heroism, suffering and sacrifice. A shadowy land of make-believe where Jack and his box are stuck beneath the bed with the dust, spiders, and other castaway toys, forced to face a bitter truth: children grow up and toys are left behind. Jack believes this is the worst that can happen to a toy.
But when the Plucker, a malevolent spirit, is set loose upon the world of make-believe and Jack is thrust into the unlikely role of defending Thomas, the very child who abandoned him, he finds out there is worse that can befall a toy-far worse. As desperation mounts, Jack is thrown together with Thomas's other toys-Monkey, the Nutcracker, and the ethereally beautiful porcelain doll Snow Angel-as they struggle to rise above their simple roles as playthings in an effort to save the boy they love.

amazing Brom!!!.......2007-07-16
This book is really amazing : Brom mixes inside different kind of wonderful pictures. Furthermore the book is really well made : it impressed me. The paper is very good.
enjoy your book
Creepy!.......2007-03-12
Ewww... morbid and creepy... but it gets 4 stars because it was for my husband and he loved it...
Twisted Toy Story.......2006-09-14
I bought this book solely for Brom's stellar artwork, but it's a fun story as well. The writing is a little odd--it reads like an older children's book, or maybe young adult--so the occasional f-bomb (and other epithets) tend to catch me a little off guard (and I swear like a proverbial sailor). I can't say much about the art, really - it's great and it's consistent with his other work, aside from the toy theme. I did catch myself wondering what Toy Story would have looked like had Brom done the art direction. If you're a fan of Brom's work at all, it's certainly worth the price for a fun read and beautiful pictures.
Thanks a ton........2006-05-01
Here's an idea: don't put up an editorial review with a huge spoiler that reveals the ending with no warning.
Left wanting.......2006-04-16
I love Brom's work, have since he broke into the rpg scene back with Dark Sun from TSR (before it was WOC--anyway...). I've also enjoyed his art books and his other forays into the gaming world. Because of all that experience I suppose I expected more of the same. This book is a novel first, so if you are expecting Brom's great art filling page upon page you would be sorely mistaken, and that is the real reason for my mediocre score--that's what I had expected. The story itself is nice enough, but I like his painted art more, so the words pale in comparison. In the end I couldn't help but feel that there could have been more art, even if they hadn't been finished paintings, Brom's sketches are fantastic as well. I'm excited for him that he got the chance to do this book, but I won't buy the next illustrated novel. However, I'll be the first in line for the next art book.

Book Description
Buffy and Angel find themselves launched into a frightening reality where fierce dragons and other fairy-tale monstrosities rule supreme. Once they locate each other, they rally the missing teens -- including Salma -- and attempt to make their way through the interdimensional portal back to Sunnydale. Little do they know that two unlikely allies have also come through to alternity: Spike and the rogue Slayer, Faith, both with their own respective -- and complicated -- MOs.
Back in L.A., gang violence and vigilantism are at a fever pitch. The Slayerettes -- now an extended unit -- are holding down the fort, awaiting Buffy and Angel's return. But Slayer and Vampire are feeling moral conflict that rivals the physical strain of demon-slaying: each wonders if a reality exists where their love could have survived. And when one of the duo's charges is suddenly killed, the portal to Sunnydale is sealed. Now, before they can worry about ridding their own universe of supernatural chaos, they've got to find a way to get back to it....

Super Reader.......2007-08-06
This line about sums this book up :
He looked grateful at the fantastic four, Slayer, Slayer, vampire, vampire. "Now you see why I'm glad you folks showed up."
Spike helps himself to a leap through the door, and when none of them come back, and no children are returned, Riley and Gunn go to break Faith out of jail to help, being all out of superpowers at their end.
So, the gang is most definitely all here in this book.
You'll need a seatbelt, this is one bumpy ride!.......2005-10-13
WOW! That was a whirlwind of chaos and loose ends never tied up.
I loved the first two books in this trilogy and couldn't wait to get my hands on the last book, the conclusion of what, until now, had been a great story.
Things kinda fell apart in this book. Okay ... not kinda. They totally fell apart.
The authors tried to pack so much into this one novel that it's almost impossible to keep up with without a map! It was rushed, and as a reader I felt it. It left me feeling winded and exhausted.
As others have mentioned, the continuity in this novel leaves much to be desired. There were storylines left unfinished, big ones.
Willow stops breathing and dies in one chapter, steps out of the room looking pale and ill and says to Cordy, "I feel dead," in another chapter, and then is her usual self in the rest of the book. It ends with no conclusion or even acknowledgment that it even occured at all. I kept waiting for Willow to go evil and betray them, or take some kind of unexpected action as a result of apparently dying, but nada.
Faith is thrown in the mix in a slick, almost after-thought manner that doesn't do her character justice. (And that says a LOT coming from me, because I'm not a Faith or Eliza fan.) She comes in and saves everyone, despite their obvious distrust, and then hugs Buffy and Angel before willingly going back to jail. She didn't even get a Thank You. It just didn't fly, it was never rang true or came to life for me.
And then there's Spike. I love this guy. Love the wit, the naughty undertone to his character and the huge heart he tries to hide. (Figuratively speaking, of course.) He's a great character, and provides great comic relief. But what in the world happened to him? What was the ending supposed to mean? The story ended with him, in his pre-vamp body, running like a coward and hurling himself into a light, begging for help.
Huh?
When this book ends, it leaves the reader feeling like the story is unfinished. They crammed too much into it and it got sloppy. They could've easily fleshed it out and added another novel to the series.
A disappointing ending to what had otherwise been a terrific story.
Didn't care for the characterizations.......2002-03-16
This book seemed pretty flat to me, compared to the characters on the TV show. Especially the sub-plot surrounding Spike. There was a lot "happening" in this book, but I couldn't be moved to care much. Unlike the show, where you can go from tears to laughing out loud in a heartbeat.
Loved it.......2002-03-15
I heard these were coming out, and it was approaching my birthday of last June, I got thise and play tickets from my mom after serious begging. She bought me them as soon as each one came out, funny thing is my best friend who doestn live at all close to me, got me the first one. But this is on the third one, it was a very well written book. The scenes between Buffy and Angel were pricless and touch the b/a shippers heart. A problem was of how much Buffy acted as if she loved Riley more than anything of the world, and Angel was past, why he dreamed about her and their forgotten day. Otherwise it is a good read, as a fan of either show, or the B/A or even b/r(gag) relationship. Just one thing to people who read my review or somethign that would never happen Nancy and Jeff read this, what the hell happend to Spike?! Is there a new crossover triogly in the making*looks hopeful*
Great Series.......2002-01-23
Nancy Holder deserves a huge Buffy fan award. Not only did her hardcover book, "Book of Fours," provide fans with one of teh Slayer's best stories, it fit logically into the Buffy-verse without taking many great leaps.
I'm not sure why she stopped writing with Christopehr Golden but I have no complaints. She blew his "Tales of the Lost Slayer" out of the water with this trilogy. It all fit neatly into the recent story lines of both Buffy and Angel (Seasons 4 / 2 respectively).
Kudos! MORE NANCY MORE!!!!!!

One of the best short story collections I've ever read.......2003-03-22
While Black Anvil Hammer is by no means the Grapes of Wrath, it is an amazing composition of short stories. Foreman really breaks the trend of cardboard story-boarding by really allowing you to become emotionally attached to the characters in such a short period. A few of the stories seem like they do not belong, but are excellent in their own right. What is truly amazing however, is Foreman's ability to create a story that keeps getting deeper the more one reads it. The other thing Foreman excels at is creating emotions within you. You hate some characters, while you love others. You want to throw things after reading some stories; you want to cry after others. Even the ending leaves you feeling better, with a "wink-wink" reference. But this isn't a big "lets get together and cry fest". Great piece of literature overall.
...
AWESOME!.......2002-12-23
This is the best book I have read in a long time! The dialogue and suspense keeps your attention like nothing else. The way the author challenges you to re-evaluate the stereotypical way society has taught us to think is amazing! Just when you think you know how a story will end, he turns the tables and throws you for a loop! Great reading and would make a wonderful gift! Looking forward to the next release!

Book Description
In this astonishing expose, journalist Greg Critser looks beyond the sensational headlines to reveal why nearly 60 percent of Americans are now overweight. Critser's sharp-eyed reportage and sharp-tongued analysis make for a disarmingly funny and truly alarming book. Critser investigates the many factors of American life -- from supersize to Super Mario, from high-fructose corn syrup to the high cost of physical education in schools -- that have converged and conspired to make us some of the fattest people on the planet. He also explains why pediatricians are treating conditions rarely before noticed in children, why Type 2 diabetes is on the rise, and how agribusiness has unwittingly altered the American diet.
Customer Reviews:
The New Cultural Obesity.......2007-09-12
When I returned from the Peace Corps in Africa to the US the first thing that struck me was how heavy people were. I did not return from a country suffering from famine, the people there were mostly in excellent shape considering their situation and it was the first time I had really noticed with a new perspective how heavy Americans were. This struck again when I had spent some time hiking in the west and returned to the mid west to see the inactive people away from the trails of the national parks were very overweight.
In Greg Critser's book I think the only thing that was not well explained was this problem of sedentary lifestyle. He does an excellent job otherwise in explaining the politics and culture that have created America's obesity epidemic. This book has changed my eating habits and brought an awareness of the problem of convenience foods, high fructose corn syrup, and fast food culture to me by his explanation of how the most readily available inexpensive foods are also the cause of obesity and much of the nation's health problems.
This is an excellent book and will probably change your outlook on food and eating for the better.
Diet book.......2007-06-10
A good history lesson that is interesting and a fast read. A basic look at how kids and adults can get fat without knowing the makeup of the foods we consume. An eye opener.
Fat Land.......2007-04-06
This is an excellent book that has a lot of inshight into just why Americans are larger than life. This is not a book that I would have chosen to read on my own but I was required to read it for a class. While I am not over weight at this point in my life I have learned a great deal about how to prevent getting there in the near future.
food for thought.......2007-01-30
excellent book! completely changed the way i look at food and the things i am willing to eat. i recommend this book to anyone looking for a healthier lifestyle and the scientific evidence to support their decision.
Not Exactly News.......2007-01-09
This book details a variety of reasons for America's obesity epidemic, including the overuse of high-fructose corn syrup, increase in size and availability of junk food, and a decreased value on physical education in public schools.
Nothing Critser says is exactly earth-shattering and, like many others who have addressed this same issue, he presents the problems without proposing any new solutions. Critser describes ways some fast food restaurants are trying to include healthier foods, but dismisses that largely as a marketing ploy. He also describes ways in which some public schools have begun to reform their food programs and increase their physical education programs. These examples, however, are few and far between.
The overall tone of this book was one of hopelessness. I think by now we all know that obesity is a problem. It would be nice to read a book that has some innovative ideas for fixing it, rather than another one simply exposing the causes.

The Best Soups!.......2006-12-25
We have tried several recipes - both vegetarian and meat - from this book and have never failed to produce an absolutely phenomenal soup. The only reason I'm even looking to buy another one is that ours is getting so tattered that the pages are loose and spattered and I'm afraid we'll start losing some of our favorites! The only suggestion for improvement would have been to put nutritional info after each recipe but it was published long before that came into fashion in cookbooks. Besides which, it's not that difficult to figure out given that the ingredients are mostly fresh and easy to find. Winter has become our favorite season because we get to cook from this book. Buy it if you enjoy warm and healthy comfort food.
Super Soups.......2006-06-21
If you are going to have a soup cookbook, I would suggest this one. Each of the book's five sections ("Flavorful Homemade Stocks", "First Course Soups", "Light But Satisfying Soups", "Main-Dish Soups", and "Sweet and Refreshing Soups") contains fabulous recipes. Preparing stock ahead of time and keeping it in the freezer is a wonderful time saver for nights when you don't have a lot of time to cook. The flavor of a homemade stock is too rich to be compared with store-bought stuff. The recipe for "Fresh Tomato Soup with Basil" is the best homemade tomato soup I have ever tasted! "Yogurt Soup with Beef and Barley" is a recipe for a thick, delicious soup that will perfectly warm a cold winter night. There are also sections on microwave soups, breads to accompany soups, and suggested menus. Each recipe is preceeded by a description, so you know what to expect from your finished product.
Product Description
From the cooking pot to the dinner table, Homemade Soups shows you how to prepare wholesome soups for everyone in the family. There's a recipe here to suit any palate, whether as a tantalizing starter, a hearty main, or a fruity finish. A cool Gazpacho makes the perfect light summer lunch, or as Autumn nears, sit down to a harvest-inspired carrot and fresh ginger soup, choose beef broth with bacon and butter dumplings as a warming winter dish, and celebrate the arrival of Spring with a chilled asparagus soup. If you fancy something sweet, try a nutty apricot soup with hazelnuts.

For Soup Lovers!!.......2007-09-28
What a wonderful cookbook!!! I am not one to order things that don't have reviews, but just the soup on the cover made my mouth water! The book is a wonderful hardback, spiral bound book. It has wonderful pictures of some of the soups. Of course we would all like more pictures, but there are plenty. The book has an entire section on tips and techniques and for making basic stocks for the soups. Chapter one contains recipes for consommes and clear soups. A wonderful variety including a japanese miso and chinese egg-flower soup. Some of the other chapters include: chilled soups, seafood soups (Cambodian Hot and sour fish soup, Fish soup with saffron), Poultry & Game Soups (Chicken Soup w/ Saffron and Rice, Normandy Pheasant w/ chestnuts and Cream), Meat Soups (Jambalaya w/ spare ribs).... and so much more! The last chapter is titled "Accompaniments", which includes many wonderful bread recipes, dumplings, poppyseed rolls, noodles, crackers... My favorite chapter is the Pulse and Grain Soups. The recipe I am about to try from that section is the Italian Barley Soup w/ Wild Greens. The picture says it all. Happy Soup Making!

Customer Reviews:
Nice, but lacks content.......2003-10-04
This is the only Pepsi guide book that I have, and I'm not real happy with it. It is inadequate, hardly scratching the surface of all the Pepsi collectibles out there.
As with most other collectibles guides, the back index leaves much to be desired. I guess the author agrees because he omitted it completely. Big mistake.
Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of Pepsi guides out there, like there are for Coke. But that doesn't mean this one is the "bible" of Pepsi collecting; it doesn't come close. I'm hard-pressed to figure out why others have written such glowing reviews for it.
It's pretty, but it's incomplete, the prices are all over the map, there's no back index...but there's very little competition.
Great Resource!.......2002-10-25

Very interesting to a new quilter.......1999-04-23
I found this book at our library and was interested immediately. I was glad to read some history on an age long craft. All women of their time told a story by the quilts they made. This book did a good job of describing some of these guilts, and the journey they have been on. It is a very important part of our history that needs to be told.

Book Description
The past decade has witnessed - especially among younger architects - a resurging interest in building with wood. The discourse has in no small measure been influenced by Konrad Wachmanns' classic Holzhausbau. And yet, this standard work (originally published in 1930) was out of print for many years. Now Holzhausbau is again available and appears here for the first time in an English language edition. Wachsmann demonstrates how new forms can be achieved when modern manufacturing processes are adapted to the traditional building material wood. He presents three totally different building techniques: the wood frame, the panel, and the log house methods and illustrates then their wide range of application possibilities by analysing plans and photographs of works of some of the century's most renowned architects. Two introductory essays enable the reader to take new hold of the book and a biographical sketch offers an impression of the times in which Wachsmann worked and lived.

A Beautiful Book.......2000-12-24
The moment you open this book you will feel inspired to work with wood in your home. It covers wooden building styles from medieval huts (still in existence from pre 1350 in Finland), through New England clapperboard, through log cabins and swiss chalets. These are enchanting enough, but the photographs of the interiors are fantastic. From deepest rustic, heavy hewn log interiors, to beautrifully painted 18th and 19th century wood panelled rooms. Its all in here.
A celebration of wood. As a huge fan of this natural building material I was delighted with the rich and endlessly varied illustrations. This is not, I should add, a "how to build" book. There is relatively little text, and all illustrations are full colour photographs of real wooden houses (no line drawings, or plans.) But that said, I have drawn great inspiration from it, and would use it directly to instruct a carpenter or architect I was working with.
For all who truely love wood as a buliding and decorative material, this book is a must.
Note quite what I was expecting.......2000-01-04
It is a good book, but based on the cover, the description and the other review, I was expecting more Arts & Crafts/Craftsman/Post & Beam/Greene & Greene/Frank Lloyd Wright/Mahady & Associates/etc. style homes and fewer Colonial/Log Cabin/Rustic homes. I just don't consider the latter group to be "elegant". Overall, it is a good book, but not quite what I was expecting.
Excellent portrait of the universal use of wood in homes........1999-01-31
The moment you open this book, you feel the reverance for wood. There is the comfort and coziness in the settings and the elegance in the designs. This is a unique book both for the purist and for traditionalist and every page is a delight. A required reading.

....the first lengthy examination of the main tenents of Goulds thought. It remains the only significant volume of Gould scholarship.... - Kevin Bazzana, The Musical Quarterly (1998)
Customer Reviews:
Best available on Gould's thoughts on music and performance.......2007-09-10
I've read nearly everything I can get my hands on concerning Gould. I skipped this one for a long time because it was an early study and I thought less valuable than later ones. Big mistake! This is one of the best books available on how Gould thought about what he did with his life in music. It presents the whole picture of his musical thinking perhaps better than anyone else. In other words, don't skip it if you want to know about the philosophy of his LIFE and MUSIC. Very valuable. Puts Gould's aesthetics on a whole new level.
Must Read Book For Anyone Interested in Gould's Philosophies.......2000-05-03
I think the best way to look at this book is as a book by Gould filtered through the mind of a professional philosopher. Read Friedrich's book for an example of the influence that Gould had on how this book was written. Although this might detract from this book as an objective analysis of Gould's thought (I got the same sense reading the book that I do when listening to or reading a transcript of one of Gould's famous scripted "off-the-cuff" interviews), it is still very important as a compendium of his ideas, articulated in a coherent framework. Especially interesting is Gould's denunciation of much of the Romantic piano literature, and his admission (gasp) that he would occasionally play Chopin for himself at home. (and, yes, I am aware of the recording of the B minor sonata.) If you are interested in Gould or modern thought on music and the relationship of media to music, buy this book.
Mr Payzant ........very little real content.......2000-04-07
If you wish to read this book, you must first know that Mr Payzant almost pays homage to Gould and allowed Gould to change the book in his own words. As I read the book, I felt as though he was being worshipped and looked for mechanisms to the mechanics of Goulds philosophy on music as though it were a science.....we'll it was not...Gould himself never wanted to know how or Why he could play the piano as he could for fear of loosing his gift...this is we'll documented....I liken the book to a Fan who is a worshipper and not a biographer in any sense.

Glenn Gould Review from Philadelphia.......2000-01-26
A real masterpiece - insightful and comprehensive. The reader is actually able to see inside the mindset of Gould. Great for anyone who appreciates music and performance at the highest level.
A wonderful tribute to a genius........1998-08-07
I read this book when it was first published by the Author. His comments concerning one of the greatest creative geniuses ever are a fitting tribute. His recognition of Gould's special place in the scheme of things is evidenced on every page.
