A depressing collection.......2007-07-08
I had to read a bunch of stories out of this book for a college course. Most of the stories are super depressing. I guess that reflects on American society, but I can only take so much. It's like watching the news, but more literary.
This is a Terrific Collection .......2006-04-29
For years I have been buying _Best American Short Stories_ and have oftened wondered how some of the stories have earned their spots in the book. Finally, I bought this _Scribner's_ collection and have a collection that is worth reading. Althought I don't like every story in the book, I'm finding that about two-thirds of them are truly excellent. Someday when I teach creative writing again, I will use this collection as a textbook. The real benefit that this book provides is the opportunity to read some of the best stories of recent years by some of the best-known writers of our time. It's a cream-of-the-crop experience. P.S. I bought it for five bucks from the bargain shelf at Borders.
Buy it for all your writer friends!.......2005-11-22
I was asked to read this book for a course on teaching creative writing. This is the book for teachers who believe students can learn to write quality literature by reading quality literature. Moreover, for teachers who read closely, each story can teach a lesson. Once these techniques have been discussed and discovered, students/writers can try them for themselves. The students are "learning to dissect without murdering."
Even if you're not teaching, though, this is an amazing collection of stories. And it's a bargain!

A Treasure Chest Of Short Fiction.......2003-03-06
I was introduced to this anthology in a writing course. While compulsory reading is seldom as enjoyable as elective reading, I found myself returning to this collection of short stories long after the course ended. Stuart Dybek's "Pet Milk", a warm and rich introspection on the transition from childhood to adulthood, got me hooked and I soon read every story in this collection. Anyone who enjoys good writing but struggles to find time to read, or who appreciates finely crafted short fiction will enjoy these short but interesting stories. Highly recommended.
Book Description
Smalltown southern librarian and amateur sleuth Aurora Teagarden confronts an extremely personal murder On the way to a lunch meeting of her local book discussion group, the Uppity Women, smalltown librarian Aurora 'Roe' Teagarden is shocked and dismayed to find her sister-in-law Poppy lying bloody and dead on the floor of her home. When the local police detective (who is also Roe's former boy-friend) gets involved in the investigation, Roe isn't sure what to expect. As the two team up to catch the killer, will they be able to put their complicated past relations behind them in the interest of ridding the town of a vicious murderer? Longtime readers and new fans alike will delight in Roe's exploits as she employs her impeccable knowledge of smalltown politics and enchanting Southern charm to solve the crime in this won-derful new installment in Charlaine Harris's terrific cozy series.

Is there a PRIZE?.......2004-08-01
I finally figured it out: there must be some sort of prize for the person who can find the MOST inconsistencies in these books! At first I thought it was just lousy editing...but then I figured NO ONE could be that bad an editor! I tried keeping a list but was spending more time on the list than reading the book. First the cat is a she then it's a he; John David works for a pharmaceutical company doing public relations then he's suddenly helping someone with legal stuff (was he a lawyer in the first draft, I wonder?). Then Lizanne's two little boys who are about two years apart are suddenly twins. In another book a victim was suffocated then later she was referred to as being strangeled, then suffocated again. Then Roe drops off Melinda and is persuaded to go inside to chat (lots of dialogue)...next page Melinda is getting out of the car and walking to her front door. Huh? Roe and Robin are talking in bed early in the morning (6:30) and she says, "When I had been at the house this afternoon I saw the refrigerator was full." What?!?!? That afternoon is a good four hours away and she's speaking of it in the past tense? I love Roe saying that murders are not the norm in her town. Excuse me? That has to be the bloodiest town in Georgia! Every book has one (at least) grizzly murder plus references to past grizzly murders. But murder's not the norm.... Does St. Martin's Press employ editors? If not, can I have the job? And what, by the way, is the prize for finding the most bloopers?
Is Roe Running Out of Steam?.......2004-06-05
If anyone seriously thinks that Harris writes cozy mysteries then they are not paying attention when they read. The author who writes the edgy Lily Bard mysteries and the Sookie Stackhouse stories, has never been one to allow her characters more than time to catch their breath between disasters. Whether it was the death involved with the true crime group she was a member of in the first mystery to her subsequent detective efforts, Aurora has lost friends, neighbors and enemies to the grim reaper. Harris never lets the reader assume that there is a Happily Ever After ending out there. Good things are balanced with bad.
In this case Aurora loses an old friend and a new one, learns things about the murdered person and her family she would just as soon not know and there are still a lot of loose strings after the murderer is revealed to fuel the next book.
I enjoyed the characters and the writing but it almost seems that the mystery was an afterthought. I guessed who the murdered was on first introduction (off stage). Harris gave away the important clues with the very nonchalant air with which she introduces them. The denoument was almost anticlimatic. The death in this case seemed to be more a peg on which to hang the characters and events than the reason for the existence of the book.
Not bad, but she's done (and hopefully will do) better.
A terrific cozy.......2003-08-06
Lawrenceton, Georgia librarian Aurora Teagarden is adjusting to widowhood just fine now that the worst of her grief is over. She is romantically involved with Robin Crusoe and is now a member of the Uppity Women, a prestigious group of females involved with literacy, and other social and political matters. It is by invitation only and Aurora is delighted that her stepsister-in-law Poppy is going to be inducted into the group.
She is positively mortified when Poppy doesn't show up to the meeting and rushes over to her home to lecture her, but instead finds her murdered body on the Kitchen floor. Poppy had many secrets and Aurora's family is trying to cope with the gossip and scandal. Roe is happy to find that her half brother Phillip is going to stay with her a while even though that puts more stress on her. While his presence takes her mind off the tragedy temporarily, she is pulled into the murder investigation by circumstances beyond her control and almost gets killed in the process.
Charlaine Harris has taken her heroine in a completely different direction and readers will be happy to see the protagonist find the double dose of happiness she so richly deserves. There is a lot of action in this delightful cozy, and not all of it is directed at solving the homicide. Roe gets a chance to become reacquainted with the brother she was forbidden to see for some time and helps her in-laws and her mother cope with a loved one's death. POPPY DONE TO DEATH is a terrific cozy, one readers will want to put on their keeper shelves.

Medical dictionary & Health Manual by Bob Rothenberg MD.......2004-07-23
This manual contains thousands of simple and complex medical
terms written for the sophistication of the layperson. Here is
a sample definition:
ankylosis- inability of a joint to function , because of stiffness or fusion of the joint surfaces
There is an extensive section on anatomy tables which contains
definitions of key bones, blood vessels and joints. There is a
comprehensive chart of the adult teeth depicting the positioning
and individual names of the numbered teeth. There is a separate
section on what to include in a medicine chest. Another section
defines blood and urine analytic tests. For instance, 1200+cc
of urine is considered the norm for a 24 hour period of
measurement. The names and addresses of National Health related
institutes are set forth for ease of reference. This would be a very valuable guide for the layperson. The purchase is well worth
the price.
Can be a training tool.......2001-06-03
Besides using this at home, I have found it can be used as a training tool in a heathcare setting. Medical receptionists can use it to expand their medical terminology. The easy to use format is great for the lay person or a health care professional support staff. It is great. Coleen, Healthcare Administrator from Seattle.
Review of The New American Medical Dictionary & HealthManual.......2000-08-24
Robert Rothenberg's Medical Dictionary & Health Manual is a very useful book not only as a dictionary but as a manual covering many health related topics that are beneficial to all health care workers. My Health Careers students in high school purchase these each year for use in class for studying Anatomy & Physiology, using them for term papers, and as reference to the many health related topics found in the "manual" section. My students have found these very useful as I do as a Health Careers instructor. There are many labeled diagrams throughout the text and useful charts in the manual. The easy language this dictionary uses makes it useful to a wide range of health workers. It can be a useful quick reference for a nurse or as a great learning tool for students. This dictionary not only defines words but is a great manual including sections on the latest Medicare guidelines, medical insurance policies, and Social Security programs. As a health instructor I highly recommend obtaining this very useful health dictionary and manual. At this price, no one can lose.

A Collector's Handbook of Miniature Perfume Bottles:.......2000-01-02
This is a great book for all collectors of minis. It has good photographs and information. Best of all, the prices are next to the pictures. This saves a lot of time when looking up many bottles at once.
Wonderful,Exciteing to find my passion in print.......1997-12-29
This book is more than a colledtor's handbook, it is my bible. It has brought great joy to my life, I don't know which is more fun-finding my miniatures to purchase or coming home and finding them in Jeri Lyn Ringblums' book. I would purchase any of her work!!!!The color, detail, information about each miniature perfume bottle is wonderful.I would suggest to anyone to buy 2 of her books at a time because the first one will get worn out. Such fun to wear out a Book.

FIRST I PURCHASED RUG HOOKERS GARDEN BOOK AND I WAS DISAPOINTED BECAUSE IT WAS WITH NO PATTENS IT ONLY TEACHES THE TECNIQUE WITH OUT HOW TO PRACTICE THEN I ORDERED SHADING FLOWERS BOOK IT WAS REALY A COMPLETE GUIDE FOR HOW TO MAKE A FLOWER SHADING BUT I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT BOOK ONLY FOR INTERMEDIATE AND EXPERTS NOT FOR BEGINNERS.
A detailed book of shading 45 different blooms........1999-06-29
This book not only gives details in shading for 45 different flowers, it also delves into the basics of hooking and the how-to's of several dye methods. The author lists over a dozen formulas with a transitional formula for each one, which is very interesting. On the whole, I found this book very helpful and full of good information.

Book Description
More than one third of the world's population lives in houses made of unfired earth bricks or stamped earth, materials also known as mud brick, adobe, terre crue, pisé, or rammed earth. Houses in the middle east have been made out this material for at least 10,000 years, but in many places this form of architecture is slowly being superceded by more recent building techniques using reinforced concrete and concrete blocks. This study contains a description of the remaining mud brick architecture in several villages in the Dakhleh Oasis in Egypt. It includes a brief history of mud brick, a discussion of the distinct local building techniques of the Oasis, and three architectural case studies of traditional mud brick houses in the Oasis, and it has many plans and photographs of local houses. The study was carried out as preparation for the design and construction of an archaeological working and training centre in the Dakhleh Oasis, which has been made according to the local traditions in mud brick vernacular. It is based on a field trip carried out in 1997 by Wolf Schijns (architect), Margriet Schijns (architect), Olaf E Kaper (Egyptologist) and Joris D Kila (art historian).

Book Description
Billy, the biography of Britain’s favorite iconoclast, gave millions of readers a fascinating insight into the personal and professional life of the genius that is Billy Connolly. Now, in this follow–up to her phenomenal best–seller, Pamela Stephenson celebrates life with the “Scottish beastie” as he hits the Big 6-0. Here we relive colorful and epic moments from Billy’s early life in Glasgow—the background to an intimate portrait of his marriage with Pamela and their life in Scotland and Los Angeles. Witty and insightful, Bravemouth draws the reader into two very different worlds—hers of international sexology and the serious psychology of humorists, his of incontinence pants, being married to a shrink, and the finer points of banjo playing.
Customer Reviews:
Fan Letter.......2006-07-19
I am a huge Billy Connolly fan & really enjoed Pamela's first book & looked forward to this. I have not read the book yet but enjoyed the audio very much. Pamela is an excellent writer & shares great insight into a very funny man. My only complaint is that the audio is abridged. As in the first book I'm sure much is left out that I would like to listen to often.
Entertaining look at a "year in the life" of Billy Connolly.......2005-10-24
Arguably one of Scotland's most famous exports, Billy Connolly's life and adventures have been well documented in print, in his stage acts, and television shows created for British audiences. While not so well known in the US, he has been a huge star in Great Britain for decades.
This book, lovingly written by his wife Pamela Stephenson, seems to take Billy's familiarity for granted. Rather oddly constructed for a biography, Bravemouth gives an interesting insight into their marriage and into Billy's evolving relationship with himself as he ages, cleans-up, and "embraces" Hollywood. The book focuses a great deal on their trips and in particular on Billy's extravagant 60th birthday party.
More a "year in the life of" rather than a true biography, this is a witty and winning look at the irreverent Billy Connolly. Full of color photos, this will be a welcome read for any fan.
A Goldmine for Billy Connolly Fans.......2005-03-30
"Bravemouth, Living with Billy Connolly," by his wife, Pamela Stephenson, is a goldmine of information for his fans. It starts with him dyeing his beard purple without warning. Near the end there's with a vivid description of his birthday party at his Highland castle with three hundred prominent guests in kilts, actors reenacting an ancient Scottish village, and a giant styrofoam sculpture of him on the lawn. It does indeed tell what it's like to live with Billy Connolly. I have a crush on him and, since he's married and thousands of miles from me, this was as close as I'm going to get. There were lots of pictures of him doing different things and looking very handsome (in my opinion).
The reason that I rate this book three stars, not five, is that there are about 150 pages worth of good material while the book is 300 pages long. It's still a good book for the fan or anyone who feels to the need to unravel this prominent actor. The author, his wife Pamela Stephenson, writes in detail about her travels without Billy. Those parts tend to feel like you're watching someone's vacation slideshow. She also has a tendency to overwrite. There are novelized descriptions of Billy's Glasglow childhood that contain way more detail than anyone could possibly remember now, especially a third party. Those passages and the travelogs really could have used an editing pen. Some readers will want to skim over them.
After wishing he was single earlier, I have to conceed that I could not improve on Pamela, who throws a party for three hundred for his sixtieth birthday, (her gift to him was a gorgeous gypsy caravan), and flies ahead to Fiji to make sure things go well for their trip, all the while maintaining her own life and career. We learn that he has a few annoying habbits like smoking cigars and showing up at studio meetings with the purple beard and refusing to change it for a role. It's pretty amazing that after decades of substance abuse (now past) he looks as good as he does at sixty. Did the love of his family (whom he seems to adore) and the self-expression afforded by his career override decades of substance abuse? Something to think about. One of the interesting facts I learned from this book is that he does not think he is handsome. It's probably better that way.
Anyway, I recommend this book for fans, and for people who want to know more about Billy Connolly. There is a softcover version of this book sold at Amazon too.
