It's ok. Not bad, not great. .......2007-05-19
I thought this book as very slow in parts. The approach of a "diary" I thought was not all that great. Time jumped sometimes 6 months to a year between "entries". I understand that it would be even less interesting if the author had put more in there but sometimes I felt that if I didn't already know the story of Henry VIII/Anne Boleyn/Queen Elizabeth I would be lost. What was interesting to me was the idea that Anne Boleyn was not a manipulating person, that instead she was just strolling along and all of a sudden the King wanted her, without her doing anything. I think it's unlikely true but it was an intersting take on the situation.
If you love the era, it's something to fill time, but I would not rush out to read it. It's ok. Not bad, not great.

good book, has the feel of an actual historical, non-fiction book. Recommend it for anyone interested in Henry the 8th history, just for a fun diversion.

The thing that I will always love about this novel, which is the story of when the new Queen Elizabeth I is given her mothers diary which covers her meeting with Henry VIII through her death, is the extremely sweet romance between Elizabeth and Robert Dudley. While Anne's diary entries are interesting and moving, it is the scenes of Elizabeth's childhood with Robert and their subsequent blossoming of love that is the best written part of this book. Truly, the part when Elizabeth is remembering them at about age 9 is so sweet it might make a person cry. I can only imagine and hope for both involved their real life love was as sweet and gentle (though probably it was more power hungry on both their parts.)
Anne's entries range on a scale from being quite boring (the coronation process, the six years she strung Henry along while he tried to get rid of Catherine) to being fascinating and emotional. The entries around Elizabeth's birth are by far the best. So many historical fiction writers portray Anne as being cold and unloving towards her daughter. While it is true that Anne probably was horrified and terrified when she bore a girl and not a boy, I think she probably loved her. Other entries are funny and smart, showing Anne as the real vibrant woman she must have been.
This book isn't perfect, it has its boring moments, and some chapters are just so slow you might Fall asleep during them. Parts of the book, such as Elizabeth's vow at the end, make no sense if you read the next book in this series, "The Queen's Bastard." But for the portrayal of Anne as a real person, with not just a conniving personality, and the wonderful sweet expression of love between Elizabeth and Robert (where most authors simply portray Robert as grasping for power) I can happily rate this book a solid four stars. Having read all but one of this authors books I can tell you her writing becomes less stiff, and she blossoms as a historical fiction author-with a generous dab, always, of romance.

Unique approach on the Tudor Queens...........2006-04-09
This was a very good work of historical fiction. The book describes two lives: that of Elizabeth I and her mother Anne Boleyn. Anne's life is depicted through diary entries which Elizabeth reads long after her mother's death. Sometimes books that have two continuous, but disparate story lines become muddled.....however, the use of this device in this novel worked perfectly. Ms. Maxwell does a superb job of keeping the characters and their plots individual, weaving them together effortlessly, and creating an emotional, fascinating product.
I picked up this book because I recently became interested in this historical time period. My only regret is that I didn't know more facts about the era prior to reading the book. I think my comprehension would have been enhanced had I been more aware of the persons of interest that play smaller roles in the book.
Regardless, it is not a pre-requisite to be a history buff to enjoy this work. It is a fresh and unique perspective, well-written, and entertaining. I look forward to reading more books by Ms. Maxwell!

Another Classic Chaosium RPG.......2000-03-28
This book is a complete RPG game published by Chaosium, detailing the world of Michael Moorcock's Elric saga. The players usually take the roles of human explorers in the Young Kingdoms, although other race information is provided. The Elemental Gods (so frequently invoked by Elric) are described and a system for magic spells is also given. The game was revised and republished under the title Elric! some years later, however many people I know consider Stormbringer a better work. Like other Chaosium-produced games (Ringworld, Elfquest, Runequest, and Call of Cthulhu) skills are done on a d100 system and stats usually range from 2d6 to 3d6+6, depending on racial packages. Thus, if you know one game, it is pretty easy to pick up another. Of course, there are some minor differences from system to system, so it is not a truly universal RP system. I did like this game and would recommend it to any Moorcock, Chaosium, or fantasy fan.

Best reference out there.......2007-09-25
I've worked in health care for over 20 years at several facilities. This book was recommended at a conference over 10 years ago. I still have that copy and use it nearly everyday. It is much better than the online Dorlands and even Taber's. The Merck Manual has more information but this is precise with exceptional pictures.

Amazing step-by-step guide to baking cakes.......2007-09-12
Williams-Sonoma Mastering: Cakes, Frostings & Fillings takes readers through the steps require to bake a cake successfully beginning with the most simple steps through to completing fairly complex recipes. The author, begins with a general description of the most common ingredients and what to look for when you buy them. She then explains how the various types of ingredients in a cake affect its structure, texture, moistness, etc. While somewhat technical in nature, the language is very simple and easy to understand.
The book includes picture-by-picture steps to help you learn basic baking techniques if you are unfamiliar with them (examples include separating eggs, zesting citrus, whipping egg whites, folding, and many more). For a beginner without an experienced person to show them the ropes, this is ideal.
The recipes are divided into sections with the first being various frostings and then moving on to Simple Cakes, Cake Layers & Sheet Cakes, and Special Occasion cakes. All of the recipes are very clearly presented including photos of the key steps and little tips in the margin to help you with some of the fine points. There is also something of a building block approach here where you can master the Simple Cakes and use those skills as you move up toward the Special Occasion cakes.
It's hard to find fault with this book. If I had to name one complaint, it's that the title is a trifle misleading. If you are already an advanced baker, I'm not sure this book will be the key to "Mastering Cakes." On the other hand, I'm a beginner and find it invaluable. Many techniques like folding were something of a mystery to me and this cookbook really helped me understand them. It's hard to overstate how helpful the photos are and how concise and clear the text is.

I strongly recommend the purchase of this book!
I've been a Pastry Chef for about 5 years now and this book is really thorough, the step-by-step is really well done, a great buy for both experienced and beginner Chefs. Even better if you're just a home baker! It has clear explanations about the HOWs and WHYs in cake batters, fillings and frostings.
The photos are also beautiful and it makes you want to try every recipe.
I only got mine a couple of days ago, so I'm still reading some theory and will try the recipes soon. I'll be back to let you know how it went.
The only downside was that the cover got dented during trasportation and I really don't want to return it, as I would have to wait another month or so to get another one.
Great purchase otherwise!!!

A Wonderful Book for the Noritake Lover.......2006-12-21
Finally, a book on Noritake collecting that does not sound like it was written by a snobby, snooty museum curator! Most Noritake collectors are lovely people who enjoy the "thrill of the hunt" and delight over every lemon plate and berry bowl they are able to obtain no matter how common and inexpensive the pieces may be. Who needs a book with pictures and prices of Noritake pieces they will never see except in private collections? Robin Brewer writes in a "down to earth style" and communicates her love for porcelain beautifully. Her photographs are excellent and her prose is charming. Some of the names she assigns the backstamps are homey and silly but descriptive. (Alot better that decimals) A wonderful book for the experienced Noritake enthusiast but especially appropriate and helpful for the beginner.

This beautifully illustrated book commemorates the sixtieth anniversary of the National Gallery of Art's acquisition of the Index of American Design. Widely regarded as one of the New Deal's most important art projects, the Index began in 1935 as a unit of the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project. Its aim was to compile and eventually publish a visual archive of American folk, popular, and decorative art from the time of settlement to about 1900. The approximately 1,000 artists involved in the project created more than 18,000 meticulous watercolor portraits of Americana.
The book presents 82 of the finest watercolor renderings along with a selection of the artifacts they represent. The original objects range from quilts, weather vanes, and hand-carved toys to carousel animals, stoneware, and cigar-store figures. Three essays explore the history, operation, and ambitions of the Index of American Design, examine folk-art collecting in America during the early decades of the twentieth century, and consider the Index's role in the search for a national cultural identity in the early twentieth-century United States.
Drawing on America's Past is the companion publication to an exhibition that runs at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., from 27 November 2002 through 2 March 2003.
