hated it.......2007-08-13
I fought my way through this book and have nothing to show for it. I have never liked Hardy and this reminded me very much of his dreary novels. I appreciated some of the writing but the characters and the winding storyline were maddening.
Not what I expected...far better.......2007-08-09
To paraphrase the saying regarding ducks: in many ways "The Sisters Mortland" walks like a gothic mystery-romance and talks like a gothic mystery-romance and the dust-jacket art even looks like a gothic mystery-romance...and yet, despite all that, the book is a great deal more. It features abundant suspense but is ultimately about the characters.
I must respectfully disagree with those who found none of them likable. It's true that most of them are deeply flawed--variously selfish, frustrating, at times even despicable. Most, however, ultimately redeem themselves in some way when they reveal their truest colors. And above all, in my opinion, they are vindicated by their love for Maisie.
Maisie, the youngest sister, is the novel's lodestar--and an amazing literary achievement. It was a stroke of brilliance to start the story from her first-person viewpoint, because we learn to value just how remarkable she is on our own, before being influenced by the other characters' estimations of her.
I'd probably give "The Sisters Mortland" four-and-a-half stars if that were an option; the book's not perfect. But it's so insightful, beautifully written, heartfelt and heart-stopping that I'm content to give it five.
Whine, whine whine........2007-07-27
Over 400 pages of "Oh! Our whole lives are ruined!" This is the main theme of every single page! I was hoping for a "gothic romance" like was written in the 1960's....boy was I wrong. If you like lots of people whining about how awful life is, you might want to read it. Otherwise don't bother.
The Mortland Sisters were not a loveable bunch.......2007-05-12
My book club read The Sisters Mortland and we failed to find a single character we liked. The book is well-crafted but the story is primarily about mean-spirited individuals or people who are self-focused. The author never made a good case to prove Maisie was a challenged child. In the beginning she seemed the most sane of the lot. Then all at once she was the sister who needed never to be left alone. It is not credible to switch gears so quickly. The one person who has the sole possiblity to be a good guy, Julia's long-suffering spouse, turns out to be one of the major catalysts for the sisters' disasters. I am not sure I will be cruising Amazon for Beauman's next book.
Deeply Emotional.......2006-12-21
n 1967 Suffolk, an aspiring young artist dipped into his paints and created a marvelous work of art depicting three young sisters. Julia, Finn, and Maisie Mortland were as different from each other as possible for full-blooded siblings, and those differences are what shone in their portrait.
The completion of "The Sisters Mortland" also heralded a disaster that would haunt all those involved for decades. In the early 1990s, childhood friend Dan Nunn faces the past as he is drawn back to Suffolk. Forced to explore and reexamine the events of that summer, Dan must reconcile past hurts with his current life in order to step into the future--if he has one.
THE SISTERS MORTLAND is told from three key perspectives and bounces somewhat through time. The characters' stories reveal aspects and layers to what, at the surface, seems a simple tale. Deeply moving and emotional, this is novel will linger in the reader's mind as an all-too-human reality. It is a reflection of life's complexities as seen through very different eyes.
Sally Beauman brings formidable insight into the human condition to her work, and it shows. Fans will not be disappointed, and newcomers will recognize Beauman's writing for the unforgettable talent it is.

Good Debut.......2006-02-16
I liked this book, though I'm not quite sure why -- I found the story to be very confusing in places, and a number of things didn't make any sense. But the characters seemed likable and well-developed (particularly Oh), so it was an enjoyable read.
Pleasant read.......2005-07-29
Since I enjoy antiques, I enjoyed the occasional tips in this and other Fiffer books. Rather like an American Lovejoy, but not as bloody. This is a pleasant read, well structured.
Antiques can be murder.......2004-10-28
Jane is having a bad week. She found her neighbor, who is also a friend and the wife of a man Jane kissed at a party recently, dead. This neighbor is also a fellow collector.
Tim gets attacked and then she stumbles upon a second corpse and finds herself the prime suspect.
Homicide detective Bruce Oh has an open mind and allows Jane to do some sleuthing. He finds her skills can be helpful. With the help of her best friend Tim, Jane sets about looking for the murderer as well as figuring out the why.
Jane is an antiques picker and meets many interesting people along the way. She feels there may be a connection with the murders as both were collectors. But she can't figure out anything that would be worth killing over.
Plus her neighbor's husband is constantly asking for her help. She is concerned what the other neighbors will say. She has no interest in him and tries to keep her distance. This doesn't always work.
I really like Jane and Tim they are entertaining characters that are richly created. The antiques descriptions are interesting and not overwhelming. I like learning more about the life of a picker and what they are looking for. Everyone is always hoping to find a steal on something expensive. The characters in this book are no different. It's fun watching them rush to beat each other out without paying too much for what they're buying.
Bruce Oh is a great character as well. He has a wife who is an antiques dealer so he somewhat understands what is going on. But he has an investigation to run as well. I like that he works with Jane and is not always throwing up roadblocks in her way.
I recommend this book.
Hitchkock goes to Tag Sales!.......2004-06-14
This is a great book for the beach. Our heroine has given up a fast paced life in advertising. While awaiting an ephiphany for her next career step, she dabbles in garage sales. While the author uses the device of common place events, such as attending auctions, tag sales, and the such, we are pulled in with the character's search for bakelite or floral bouquet "Frogs". You will be looking at your neighbors'cast-offs in a whole new light. She has the down to earth common sense of everyday folks, and seems as though she is speaking in asides to the reader. Great clues, and consistent suspense. This novel will not fail to please. Great read for the beach.
Clever and Challenging.......2004-03-26
'Killer Stuff : A Mystery', written by Sharon Fiffer, is a wonderful addition to the genre. The central character, Jane Wheel, having lost both her PR job and her academic husband, is the chief suspect in a murder, and the story twists like a pretzel as the mystery unfolds. To the very last page, the book will hold you like an overweight aunt at a family reunion. Particularly impressive as a character is Homicide Detective Bruce Oh, revealed largely through dialogue. The following excerpt from page 94 illustrates the author's style and success.
'"Did the Wheel woman confess?" Oh asked as he dunked his doughnut.
His partner, Detective Dee Tective, not long out of the Academy, smiled coquettishly and said, "No. I was about to give her the third degree when she said she wanted to take the Fifth."
"The fifth what?"
"Beats me. She said she had a perfect right."
"A perfect right what? Foot? Hand? Eye?"
"Beats me. I'm just a cop in a tight skirt, not a physician."
"Oh," said Oh.
"Is this roll call?" Dee asked.
"I wasn't saying my name, you klutz. It was a frustrated utterance."
"Oh," Dee said.
"Yes? What is it?"
In non-alphabetical order, Dee was bemused then amused.
By now, Oh's doughnut was a small sponge at the bottom of his cup. Outside, the sky was eye-blue and clear. A flock of pigeons settled on the window ledge.
"Will someone please let those damned birds out!" Oh shouted above the flapping.'
Sharon Fiffer has made an enduring name for herself. It is well deserved.

Excellent partner in my weight loss program.......2006-02-13
This is a wonderful companion CD for my weight loss effort. I have gained and lost the same 85 pounds several times now because each time I have done it from a place of depravation (Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, South Beach, HerbaLife, and OverEaters Anonymous). After seeing the movie "A Beautiful Mind" I have come to the conclusion I needed to find a way to live at peace with eating compulsions inside my head. This CD has helped to make that possible, it is a process, but for the first time I have a life of non-depravation as I lose weight. I have coupled this CD with the excellent material I found in the Abraham-Hicks Book entitled "Ask and It Is Given". These are changing my life. I am more peaceful, productive, respectful, and positive, especially towards myself, and it is showing in my weight loss. That which is driving my over eating is beginning to melt away and food cravings that are harmful to my health and well being are subsiding. I use the mediation every morning and the affirmations as the last thing before bed. During the day I listen to the Abraham-Hicks material anytime I can (CD is on book here at Amazon - they also have a website).
Side note for Christians: She has created a CD that will work for everyone and in that light she has used some language that needs to have a universal appeal. Christ is Spirit and He can be the "blanket" and "partner" you choose to see in the imagery and affirmations.
Excellent.......2004-06-30
This guided imagery is a wonderful way to relax. I have learned in recent years that my body does not handle stress very well and I find it very hard to quiet my mind and meditate on my own-- this CD enables me to completely relax for an entire 30 minutes-- no small feat for me-- and clear my mind. Whether or not this will help you lose weight I really don't know, but I do believe that you have to be healthy and strong inside in order to change the outside.
Excellent affirmations; not-so-good imagery.......2003-11-29
The cassettes use guided imagery on one side and deliver positive affirmations on the other side. Background music is used throughout the tape.
Mrs. Naparstek employs images that I did not find helpful (and as a Christian even apalling). Example: "imagine a cloud of spirits around you, some dead, some living, who are cheering you in your efforts...". On the other hand, I bought the cassette mainly for the affirmations, and I was not disappointed there. You are encouraged to view your body as "your oldest friend" and accordingly see to its well-being.
The induction is rather short and coupled with images I could not relate to. Therefore I decided to use a longer induction from one of Janet Decker's CDs in conjunction with this tape and was quite satisfied with the result. No miracles, but then I do not use this tape very often and at least I seem to feel less hungry the day after using the tape.
excellent format and voice.......2003-05-09
Bellruth has been making meditative self help cds/tapes for quite a while. I find them all to be very positive. The guided imagery is pleasant and not forced. Her voice is very nice for this kind of work. Some voiceovers in this genre are a huge negative. Either the voice is too monitone or sing song-y... Perhaps too high picthed to be relaxing. Some peoples voices arent conducive to relaxation. Belruths is wonderful. I am on weight loss program but I am happy to use this cd daily. For me it isnt something that would work on its own but in conjunction with diet and exercise I am finding it very helpful. It is also an excellent relaxation cd in its own right and I think that relaxarion is important to overall well being.
I've enjoyed it so far.......2003-04-02
I've had this CD for a little over a month now and have started listening to it again on a daily basis. I find it very relaxing. Her voice is soothing and genuine and the background music perfectly underscores the narration. It's not a hypnosis or sublimal messaging CD. Rather, it promotes positive reinforcement about your ability to lose weight through repetition of certain phrases and through visual imagery. If you haven't done visual imagery, it involves that kind of visualizing different areas of your body that the other reviewer mentioned. It can be easier for some people to get used to it and "zone out" and harder for others. What I will say is that when I do listen to her CD, I feel more relaxed, less stressed and more positive about my body. This isn't a miracle weight loss CD. You still have to exercise and eat right. But it does create and reinforce positive feelings that may help you with your weight loss goals.

The Amateur Pastry Chef.......2004-12-29
Three decades ago, the Roux Brothers re-invented French cuisine by inventing nouvelle cuisine and writing a cookbook by the same name. With this book, they have focused their talent to the pastry kitchen. One the whole, if you sort of know your way around the home pastry kitchen, this book is a decent (but not great) resource for professional patisserie recipes adapted for the home kitchen. It is not for beginners.
In spite of all the French heritage, the Roux brothers exercise their craft in England, and are thoroughly British in attitude and taste, for better or worse. True to this tradition, virtually every dessert in this book has either fresh fruit or marzipan (there is even a Christmas pudding; there are 5 fruit souffles, but not a chocolate one); if you are looking for a standard, heavy, fattening French pastry or dessert that does not have fresh fruit, you probably will not find it here. In that sense, this pastry book is quite deficient, as there are whole classes of pastry and desserts that the home pastry chef should be able to do, but are absent from this book.
The concept of a pastry book to train the home cook into an amateur pastry chef is very appealing; this is the stated intention of the authors. No book I have ever come across does this adequately. Sad to say, this book is no exception. The patisserie here is more or less professional, meaning that most of the dishes are multiple component assembly jobs; it assumes you already have the components available and ready for use. The coordination of making the basic components with the main dish assembly is never addressed. There is a surprising amount of inattention to the recipes by the authors: flour amounts are in cups and not weight, the use of confectioner's sugar makes the dessert gritty (you should use superfine sugar), potato starch in the sponge biscuit, a creme mousseline that uses pure butter rather than whipped cream (yuck), and the use of instant vanilla pudding and lack of gelatin in creme chiboust.
Unfortunately, the recipe instructions lack the necessary detail for the home cook. Without professional instruction, it is unlikely that the average home cook will be able to successfully execute the recipes, even in the basics chapter. For example, the suggestion to place water directly to the oven floor when baking bread will either cause a kitchen fire or damage the oven. The authors never address what to do with leftover cake trimmings, frostings, etc; several recipes advise you to throw away leftover meringue (a professional pastry chef should know better; just pipe out and bake little cookies or vacherins). Some of the recipes require you to slice genoise rounds into paper thin layers (1/4 inch), but the book never tells you how. The seasonality of fresh fruits is also never addressed (good quality fresh fruits means that many of the desserts can only be made during certain times of the year, plus the quality of fruit in England is inferior to the ones in California, as England is at the same latitude with Canada, not exactly famous for high quality summer berries or stone fruit; if the authors lived in California, I think the fruit treatment would be vastly different).
On the good side, other than the croquembouche or Pithivier, the recipes do not have fancy, elegant, professional decorating components. The emphasis is on preparing the pastry itself, making it a good learning tool for the home amateur pastry chef who does not need to learn sophisticated decorating techniques. The recipes also have essential constituents: prep and cooking times, and necessary equipment and tools.
The chapter on sugar work (poured, spun, rock, blown, and pulled) is rarely found, even in professional pastry books. They are quite instructive, but flawed: no safety information (hot, molten sugar at 300 degrees is the most dangerous thing in the kitchen, even more dangerous than deep fry grease, because the sugar sticks to your skin, whereas oil tends to drip off or can be shaken off), glucose (which cannot be found in stores, but you may substitute light corn syrup), and the call for beet sugar or cane sugar cubes (wrong on both counts: always use granulated cane sugar for worked sugar and sculpture).
It has chapters on doughs, bread, meringue and sponge cake bases, sauces and creams, tarts, cold dishes, hot dishes, sherbet, savory hors d'oeuvres, petits fours, picnic cakes, worked sugar, and a brief chapter on culinary sculpture (dry choux, marzipan, royal icing, pastillage, nougatine, chocolate curls, ice bowl).

Customer Reviews:
Practical, traditional, green, healthy.......2005-06-17
This book (2nd & updated edition) is about "Green woodworking". What is this? It is working on freshly cut wood, which has a lot of advantages (e.g. the wood is softer). The wood is also not sawn along its length, which results in much greater wood strength (no fibres cuts) and makes it less prone to deformations following variations of moisture. If thin pieces of wood are required, then they are obtained by splitting the wood along its fibres (grain). However, as the author honestly admits, it does not allow to build some styles of furniture that one can make with conventional woodworking (but I can imagine a combination of both kinds of woodworking should be possible for making at least all kinds of traditional furniture.)
But, as the author makes clear at the beginning of the book, green woodworking is much more than a mere technique. It is first of all a tradition : a know-how transmitted from generation to generation in traditional places such as the European countryside, since ages. Being a real tradition it is also a natural, green way of life: it requires using one's muscles in a natural manner (no need for "fitness" or diet), does not pollute the environment (no production of electricity required nor burning of gas). As it does not involve any dangerous machines, nor motor noise nor production of cancer-giving wood micro-particles, it does not imply a high risk of harming the woodworker's health as is the case with conventional (modern) woodworking. And is more pleasant : no need to wear ear protections or a particle filter... but instead using traditional, charming tools and performing those same gestures our ancestors have performed for so many generations.
It is nice to read that the author learned this tradition in the correct manner : from an old woodworker (in spite of the language barrier!), in a remote place high in the Swiss mountains. Throughout the book, I discovered that he also learned, although not directly, from other branches of traditions, such as Mennonite woodworking or Indians.
The major part of the book is about how the techniques themselves : materials (wood in general and different kinds of woods), knife-work, hewing, riving (splitting), shaving, boring, bending, joinery. All of the this is very seriously exposed, with many practical details but also some theoretical background. However I think he should also have covered working with wooden planes, such as the excellent planes manufactured by the German traditional company E.C.E.
The book teaching also various things, such as making a shaving horse, and covers also more than woodworking, showing how to use bark to make some kinds of Indian sacks, or how to use the inner bark to make the seating part of a chair.
I found this book excellent. It could have been even better if the author knew German (what a pity it does not, you really need to know German for such a subject), as the tradition of green woodworking has remained alive in Germanic countries. Some German books have parts on green woodworking, allowing one to know how it was slowly supplanted, starting with the early medieval times, by the fashion of using sawn wood, but remained alive among farmers living in forest areas. BTW I can recommend to those in Europe a practical and well exposed book available(...): Tove Yde's Grünholz Schnitzen (translated from the Danish).
The present book ends with a topically-arranged bibliography (unfortunately covering only English books). I highly recommend this seriously written book, as it is packed with information, may save you some money on power tools and may also help you preserving your health : a good alternative to our pollution-based societies...

Eight original stories give readers a sense of the hardships faced by the first Chinese-Americans. In "Spirits of the Railway," a young man appeases the ghosts of dead railroad workers who were never properly buried. In "Forbidden Fruit," a father's prejudice keeps his daughter from marrying her beloved. Dramatic illustrations accompany the stories. "The brief, pithy tales strikingly reflect traditional Chinese beliefs and customs in New World circumstances. . . . A book not to miss."-- Booklist Starred Review

If you want to get started studying Paul Simon's work, this is probably a good book for you. If you're wanting to learn his songs on guitar I wouldn't recommend it. It's strictly chords and sheet music. No tab and doesn't show capo positions. It does contain all of Paul's best stuff (IMO).
I love it.......2007-01-04
I got this book for my husband for Christmas. Last night he played several songs from this big book and it was great hearing it on a guitar in my room. I love Paul Simon.
Spans a great career.......2001-04-27
Paul Simon is one of the worlds greatest musicians. This book shows a three decade career at it's best, the book includes a good number of the hits as well as the not so well known hits. The only bad thing I can think of to say about it is that it came out before Rythm of the Saints did so therefore it didn't have songs like the Cool Cool River, obvious Child, or Born at the Right Time. Overall for any musician who wants to be able to play the songs of one of the worlds greatest musicians, get this book

Short Speculative Fiction At Its Best.......2006-08-08
Having read Ripping Reads, the latest in the series of down under anthologies from Agog! Press, I can only say I regret not having read the other installments. All stories in Ripping Reads are good, and a lot are excellent.
Editor Cat Sparks was clever enough to open with 'When the world was flat' (Geoffrey Maloney), a deliciously tongue-in-cheek tale about (indeed) a flat world - but a *Victorian* one. That marvellous tale got me all eager to read the rest, and I was not disappointed.
The second standout early in the book is 'Truckdreamin'' (Andrew Macrae), a fascinating and well-written cross between Mad Max, cyberpunk and a seventies trucking movie.
Directly following this is 'A pig's whisper', a darkly atmospheric and more than a little disturbing story of two children lost in the outback.
'Rosebuds' by Tansy Rayner Roberts, though superficially an unremarkable fantasy tale, is highly entertaining, deals with princes, princesses, courts and dwarves just a bit differently, and has one of the best first line I've ever read. I read 'Rosebuds' with a constant grin.
'The souls of dead soldiers' (title abbreviated to save bandwidth) by Ben Peek is darkly apocalyptic, weird in a good way, gripping and moving.
And the last story worth a special mention is 'World's Wackiest Upper Atmosphere Re-entry Disasters Dating Game' by Brendan Duffy. With fast and furious writing, bizarre, funny and entertaining characters, a truly wacky take on modern society, and roller coaster twists and turns, the title really says it all.
Jeff Vandermeer provides two yummy 'Secret lives' pieces of flash fiction, and force of nature Jay Lake adds an unexpectedly sensitive and low-key story.
There's 15 more pieces of great writing in this anthology, and there certainly is great reading. If you like speculative fiction, pick up this antho!
Agog! Ripping Reads is an excellent overview of current Australian speculative fiction.......2006-06-27
This collection features twenty two original short stories by Australian authors (plus Jeff Vandermeer).
In "A Pig's Whisper" by Margo Lanagan (author of the collection Black Juice, which won two World Fantasy Awards, and was a Michael L. Printz Honor Book, American Library Association), Margo plays darkly with Australian history and fiction, including Norman Lindsay's The Magic Pudding and May Gibbs' Snugglepot and Cuddlepie.
"Rosebuds" by Tansy Rayner Roberts (author of the novels Splashdance Silver and Liquid Gold) is a funny, charming, feminist retelling of the Brother's Grimm fairytale "Snow-White and Rose-Red", with a witty, arch, resourceful heroine.
"The Souls of Dead Soldiers are for Blackbirds, Not Little Boys" by Ben Peek is an original, moving, dark, strange tale of war, loss of faith, and growing up.
The collection also includes stories by:
Anna Tambour (author of the collection Monterra's Deliciosa & other tales and the novel Spotted Lily);
Chris Lawson (author of the collection Written in Blood);
Simon Brown (author of The Mark of Thetis, Privateer, Winter, Cannibals of the Fine Light, Inheritance, Fire and Sword, Sovereign, Empire's Daughter and Rival's Son);
Jeff VanderMeer (author of the novels Dradin, in Love; Veniss Underground; Shriek: An Afterword); and
Cory Daniells (author of the novels Broken Vows, Mystery at Devon House, Dark Dreams, Desperate Alliances).
Agog! Ripping Reads is an excellent overview of current Australian speculative fiction.

The Cafe - A Spooky Story.......2007-09-18
We talk to ghosts in every letter we write, said Kafka. This is what is Daniela Norris story, The Cafe, a letter. Quoting Kafka, a letter "is after all, a communication with ghosts, and one not limited to the ghost of the addressee, but also with one's own ghost, which develops in one of the quiet in the letter one writes"
Unlike Kafka, Daniela prose is direct and simple. The main character listens to the grandmother "What would you like? The chicken with potatoes or the beef with rice?" Unexpectedly, the woman only selects a cup of wine (white wine). She noticed a warning " Please limit your stay to two hours," it said on the back of the menu. "
It is a story about the dream's delicate tissues and the molecules of happiness buried in our souls. It is about the invisible substance of our inner breathe, where we keep those dear others we yearn to bring back and who made us who we are.
Refreshing, fun, inspiring stories.......2007-06-05
I am the author of one of the stories, so of course will not comment on my own, but I can certainly comment on the other stories in the colletion: Each one has a different flavor, and they all make you want to read more.
I gasped with Eric Glambik-Boe's Angel, cried with Sea Horses, laughed with Lost and Found.
And, do you want to know why My Brother Died and All I Got Was This Lousy T-shirt? Well, you'll have to read the book!
