The ladies rebuild their home.......2007-08-13
Fire devastates the ladies' home and their lifestyle. While they are rebuilding, they are in a variety of living situations which separate them and cause them a variety of problems. Grace and Hannah have a hard time balancing their relationships with their men friends and their relationships with their former housemates. Grace, Bob, and Charles continue to have health concerns and the ladies are still involved in the lives of some children that Grace met when she volunteers. Hannah is involved in the building of Bella's Gardens while her daughter begins a relationship of her own. Nothing is simple in the lives of the Covington ladies, but they always seem to overcome problems along the way.
A Rather tired story.......2007-01-04
After really enjoying the first 3 books in this series I began to find it to be rather formulaic. And the characters have begun to be annoying rather than charming. Amelia is self centered, Hannah is rigid, and Grace has no spine at all. I found myself being irritated by them instead of curious.

Here is another book from Joan A medlicotts inspiring series about three ladies of a certain age who have made a life for themselves in a small north Carolina mountain town. There are trials and tribulations all brought to an end with courage dignity and fortitude by the three ladies. Other characters in the book add only add to the charm of the story. God Bless the ladies of Covington, they will live in my heart forever.
The Sprit of Covington.......2005-07-30
Medlicott has a 'winner' in this series of "Covington" books. I highly recommend this book and the rest in the series. Can't wait for #6. "The Spirit of Covington" (#5 in the series)didn't have as many 'twists and turns' as the previous 4 books, but has an excellent "set up" for the next in the series (due out Fall 2005). The writing is so descriptive that I felt like I could drive to Covington, NC and know everyone and every place there. Great character development. Good blend of cultural expectations of the 40s and present day "life" issues.
gentle Southern breeze .......2004-09-29
The fire destroys the converted farmhouse that the three sixty something ladies Grace, Amelia, and Hannah, and one adult daughter Laura call home. The elderly trio lost personal items that cannot be replaced, but the threesome are troopers and makes plans for a new house with more bathrooms.
Meanwhile Amelia and Grace move in with Bob in his condominium, while Hannah and her daughter Laura moves to another family-owned home. The fire brings back bad memories for Amelia who relives the death of her young daughter and the accident that killed her husband and left her scarred. The building begins, but though hopes for the future are raised, other events shake the tight friendships. Laura plans to marry but also leans towards an abortion that upsets her mother. Amelia returns to photography. Bob asks Grace to marry him. Who will move into the new home when its finished becomes questionable.
The fourth Covington tale is gentle Southern breeze of a story that requires a mint julep, a porch, and a warm fall day. The story line brings out the personalities of the prime four females and several support players, but clearly lacks any extensive action. Fans of a cozy character study will want to visit Covington for this novel and its previous three books.

A Textbook would be a livelier read.......2005-11-14
This review is for the Berkley Prime Crime (a Penguin Putman imprint) paperback edition published in January 2000, 321 pages of story. THE MOCHE WARRIOR is one of nine novels in the Lara McClintoch Archaeological Mystery Series. None of them has appeared in USA Today's list of 150 best selling books.
In THE MOCHE WARRIOR, Lara McClintoch, half-owner of an antique shop in Toronto, buys an odd lot of supposedly not too valuable stuff at auction. The lot includes three artifacts, marked as replicas, from the Moche culture, which thrived on the North Coast of Peru from 100 AD to 500 AD, according to the author. (Some researchers have found evidence of the Moche well into 800 AD.) Soon after Lara acquires the pieces, someone breaks into her shop, seriously beats her employee and torches the shop's storage room, which has a dead stranger in it. The only item missing is one of the Moche artifacts. The police suspect that Lara had her employee torch the shop to collect insurance, an accusation that is about as improbable as the rest of the plot.
Lara, although initially unaware of the Moche culture, realizes the three artifacts are not replicas, but authentic and valuable pieces that were illicitly smuggled out of Peru. To save her reputation and prove her innocence, Lara goes to New York City where she finds another man murdered, then to Mexico City to obtain a false identity, and finally to Peru to solve the archaeological mystery.
Listless writing makes this mundane and often improbable plot duller. Superficially drawn characters talk about Peru and the Moche in long, speech like dialogues, which illustrate only that the author did considerable research but was incapable of weaving it into her story. I have researched the Moche and traveled in Peru for a novel I am writing. The author's information on Peru and the Moche are accurate. If you want to learn about the Moche, however, a textbook would be a livelier read.
A bit of a yawn.......2003-10-12
Not a particularly interesting or captivating read. The characters were not engaging and mostly unbelievable. The pace was slow and at times rather difficult to grasp and mostly unrealistic. I'd recommend Clive Cussler, Dan Brown for a far far better read.
Entertaining.......2003-05-15
THE MOCHE WARRIOR is the third entry in Lyn Hamilton's Lara McClintoch series. I read the first two, THE XIBALBA MURDERS and THE MALTESE GODDESS, several years ago. I was lukewarm on the former, but somewhat disappointed in the latter. Sufficiently disappointed that I had no particular inclination to purchase this third book. Finally, though, time triumphed over memory. Recollections of the reasons for my disenchantment with THE MALTESE GODDESS faded to the point where I decided to give THE MOCHE WARRIOR a shot. I'm glad I did. While I will agree with others who find it a bit incongruous for a character to just take off at the drop of a hat on a lengthy and costly expedition to Mexico and Peru (anyone else ever notice how money is rarely a consideration for fictional characters, whether in movies, TV, or books), it's hard to say how any of us would react if we thought our life was in imminent danger, and credit cards do make it possible to postpone costs. Nevertheless, I found the plot engaging enough to keep me turning the pages despite the improbabilities. To be fair, what work of fiction doesn't have some improbabilities in it? Further, I found the setting interesting (the arid Peruvian coast) and the archeology intriguing. All in all, I enjoyed this book. More than I expected to, in fact. As a result, I already have the next book in the series, and I'm giving THE MOCHE WARRIOR four stars. If you like nice little mysteries, consider giving this one a try.
What Happens When You Try To Spite Your Ex Husband.......2002-07-14
Antique dealer, Lara McClintoch learns that revenge does not pay when she spitefully outbids her ex husband for a box of artifacts then discovers that someone is willing to murder for the contents. This archaeological mystery takes us to Peru where connections to grave robbers, the black market and drug runners place Lara in danger. The plot is tight with an assortment of potential bad guys that kept me guessing at the connections. But though Hamilton's books have exotic settings, her writing doesn't really give me the feeling that I've been there--and I have been to several of the countries she writes about. That said, I enjoyed the book anyway and laughed out loud at her wrap-up with the ex in the ending.
Moche Warrior.......2000-12-04
I read Lyn Hamilton because I like mysteries with an archaeolical background. Her three books so far have made that part interesting, however she lacks the 'good story' ability. I loose interest in her characters. This story was too hard to believe. Anyone who would just fly off to New York, then Mexico and then Peru after the loosing the profit capability of her business (believe me I know the cost of one-way airfares) has to have an income that makes the reasons was going off on this jaunt seem ridiculous. All the characters were set up well enough, but very little they did seemed real. Example: the wife of the customes inspector from Peru with three births to her body being able to attract a very successful French smuggler and be able to wear the 'teen' styles of barely a silk slip. Her endings are neat, but that's fine with me. It suits the genre.

Great baby care book - especially for first-timers!.......2007-08-22
This book was well organized and well written.
We used this as a general guideline for our first baby, and it gave us lots of information in a very readable format - everything from picking out your layette to diaper care to various ailments and basic treatments.
Our daughter is now two years old, and we still keep this book handy and occassionally reference it to learn something new.
We just bought this book for some of our best friends who are now also first-time parents, and would highly recommend it for other new parents as well.

I bought this book under a search for preemie parenting books. It has good general information for full term babies, but if you're the parent of a preemie it's really not for you.

There is only one thing I disagree in this book which had a very small section suggesting letting a baby cry for an extended period because it says it is important for a baby to learn to comfort him/herself and handle returning to sleep on his/her own. I am against letting a baby younger than 6 months to cry it out under any circumstances. If my baby was 6 months or older, I may let him cry him out at night only for 5-10 minutes maxium. That is also why I only gave it 4 stars. Other than that, I believe the book was very well-written and organzied. The book talks about the newborn basics, covers physical, emothional and cognitive milestones, your child's health etc.

I own every cookbook in this series and this is my second favorite. I find this cookbook to use normal, everyday ingredients that are easy to find. I also find that the receipes give a new, fresh twist to down home foods. I especially like the approach they take in making the dish simple and quick to prepare. Another nice feature of this cookbook is the organization of the seasons and dishes that would compliment that season. This would be a wonderful addition to your cookbook collection. Note... be sure to try the Angels-Among-Us cake. You will definately make it for years to come!

My girlfriend was preparing a recipe from this book and raved about how much her family enjoyed it. She offered to write the recipe down for me and pulled out her copy of "Keeping Good Company". I was attracted to the beautiful artwork and asked to page through her book. I immediately found several other recipes my family (of picky eaters) would enjoy. I do not consider myself a good cook, but I found these recipes to be simple and quite delicious. I plan to give each of my sisters a copy for Christmas.

A collaboration of two creative women whose work is both useful and at the same time beautiful to view. The recipes represent good, down-to-earth-but-today's kind of cooking, promising a treat upon completion. They are easy to follow and don't require hours of shopping for the ingredients! The illustrations add pleasure to the reader. This book warms your heart and tummy.

The most comprehensive references on transferware pottery are basically boring lists: You use them to reference a specific item, and not much else.
This book is so much more.
It's a top reference work, but is also the sort of book you can put on the coffee table - or curl up with in bed for an absorbing couple of hours reading.
Highly recommended.

the notebook i wish i'd had for the class..........2001-12-29
i had the esteemed privilege of working with bill forsythe in a week long intensive class while he was visiting ucla during the spring of 2001. he spoke about most of the processes you will find on this cd-rom; however, the cd-rom is MUCH easier to follow than some of the class discussions we had... bill is a genius and sometimes left everyone in the room with blank looks on their faces, because he would jump into an idea without remembering that we didn't necessarily know the train of thought that got him to the idea he was currently discussing... that is definitely not a problem on the cd-rom -- it is exceedingly clear, and the concepts are demonstrated in actual choreographic examples. the disc is well organized, and very inciteful. if the ideas themselves aren't interesting enough, there's the fabulous design and layout of the whole package that will keep you fiddling for a long time. this is a must for anyone interested in bill forsythe, choreographic processes, dance for visual media, design for movement arts, and movement improvisation. check out bill's solo which is included on the disc as well!!

The CD Rom format for this resource, allows for a visual insight into Forsythe's improvisation techniques. Planned initially as a training tool for new members of his company, the CD Rom offers much more for the analytical eye.
The format is very slick and the interface provides for easy navigation aroung an aesthetically pleasing environment. For those studying Forsythe's work, the resource is a must, as not only does Forsythe explain characteristic techniques such as room writing, but several performances by Forsythe as well as by other dancers, demonstrate each of the processes.
The 3D format is certainly the most appealing feature of the resource, and one which makes it stand apart from other resources on choreographers or improvisation.
