Secondary Problems Ruin This Long Awaited Romance........2006-08-17
Finally, Jodi Thomas gives her readers the story of "Two Bits" and "Her Ranger" . . .
THE TEXAN'S REWARD is the final book in Jodi Thomas' "Wife Lottery series" and throughout this series, Thomas hinted at which direction she would take her fourth and final story . . . "I am waiting for you to grow up Miss Nellie Jean" . . . "I'm growing as fast as I can . . . I'll be there before you know it . . ."
Raised, in a brothel, by the town's notorious madam, Nell "Two Bits" Smith had grown up lonely and boisterous. Certainly, over the years, Nell had given the town gossips endless scuttlebutt. Yet, Texas Ranger Jacob Dalton had always been there for her. Always, he had been her hero, her best friend, and finally her heart's secret love. "Her Ranger" had always been there . . . except for the time THE bullet slammed into her back and changed her life forever. Then little "Two Bits" went from lively and troublesome . . . to pitiful and crippled.
Just what was she doing? Preposterous! His Nellie Jean advertising for a husband! Over his dead body! No way! Never! If she needed a husband so bad, then he, Texas Ranger Jacob Dalton, would marry Miss Nell Smith! All he had to do was convince his little "Two Bits." All he had to do was get around her silly husband candidates, and her endless supply of social outcasts, and his never-ending Ranger duties! Exactly when had life gotten so complicated?
*** Reviewer Comments:
I once read "Jodi Thomas writes so, that her reader sees" and I couldn't agree more. Jodi Thomas is a wonderful descriptive author and a western written by Ms. Thomas is indeed a treasure. However, in THE TEXAN'S REWARD, the author lost her romantic direction. Although, the story started with great promise, it soon bogged down in numerous sub-plots. Mind you, sub-plots and secondary characters are great when used for a colorful diversion. However, when they get in the way of the story's main direction, they are unappreciated! Disappointingly, Ms. Thomas spent too much time on secondary problems and Ranger duties then on the main characters' actual wooing. "Two Bits" and "Her Ranger" deserved much more . . .!

a good read.......2006-01-01
this began as a good read, but somewhere in the middle i was hoping for more to come. and the ending was definitely lacking. i just love jodi thomas and was soooo excited to get this in my paws but the first three installments were better. i wasn't as riveted here. and it was very transparent. could figure the story line from the first few chapters: old sheriff in town, he's a ranger, duh. and at the end when she's recovering from surgery, he has to go out of town, comes back to find. . .? no surprize there! i would rather read things i CAN'T write.
but i still love jodi thomas and am still an avid fan, will always be.
Another great Jodi Thomas book..........2005-12-15
First of all I want to start out by saying that the reviewer before me is inaccurate. Jodi Thomas wrote the Wife Lottery Series, which consisted of 3 books. The Texan's Wager, When A Texan Gambles & A Texan's Luck. This book is a spin off of that series. In those 3 books you met Ranger Jacob Dalton & Nell a.k.a. "Two Bits". This is their story. You never even see Bailee, Sarah or Lacy in this book. I don't think it's technically considered part of that series but anyone that read that series probably fell in love with the Ranger & Two Bits & will really enjoy reading their story.
Book description:
Years ago, Texas Ranger Jacob Dalton Bailed an orphan girl named Nell out of trouble more times than he could count. But now the kid he once called "Two Bits" has grown into a beautiful young woman-an id in more trouble than ever before.
Wounded in an ambush, Nell refuses to become a burden to her former guardian angel. Unfortunately, her injury has made it impossible for her to handle the ranches she as inherited, so she decides to get herself a husband. One thing's for sure: She isn't about to let Jacob bully her into saying "I do." When Jacob steps in line for her hand, Nell is forced to weigh her need for his help against a love too strong to allow him to sacrifice his future for her.
* I really enjoyed this book but it didn't quite measure up to other books that I've read from Jodi Thomas. It was good & I do recommend it but it's not something I'll be reading again. If you're a Jodi Thomas fan I'm sure you will enjoy this book.
horrible, but the first two of worth reading.......2005-11-17
I have the first two books in this series and they are keepers but this one was a waste of time. There was little romance between the two characters. There wasn't a lot of sexual tension to keep you reading on and wanting more. I just couldn't get into it, something was definitely missing. The book was too slow paced and the story line seemed forced. Skip this one and read the first two
Enormously Entertaining - Highly Recommended.......2005-11-08
Jacob Dalton, Texas Ranger, really couldn't remember a time when he hadn't had Nell, `Two Bits' on his mind. From the very first days the rebellious orphan had come to live and be raised by Fat Alice, the town's madam, she'd been a thorn in his side, and he'd always been there to pull her out of one fix or another. Yet, whenever he returned after chasing desperados around Texas, it would be Nell who'd run, jumping into his arms to welcome him back. Now, after a shooting accident that has left Nell a cripple, he's back after hearing that she was advertising for a husband to run her ranches - and Jacob knows he is the only man for the job! Returning just in time, Nell is interviewing applicant number twelve, an innocent business-like bookkeeper, who seems to be meeting all her qualifications for husband material. Before she can make up her mind Jacob is in her face `bossing her around' and telling her that she darn well marry him before he feels forced to shoot her latest applicant - who promptly passes out on the floor! As if there weren't enough commotion with those two vying for her hand, along comes a slippery lawyer with paperwork stating she already accepted his proposal but whose primary concern was to swindle her out of her property. Oh, and along with that - toss in a vicious gang of train robbers; and, a house full of social misfits that seems to grow and pandemonium reigns supreme! Though Nell has loved Jacob all her life, she's determined not to tie him down with a `cripple' but Jacob has to convince her otherwise.
*** This was an absolutely delightful and entertaining read, from beginning to end. Nell and Jacob, the two main characters were drawn vividly with compassion, humor, and heart. Additionally, the reader is offered up an immense cast of secondary intriguing and quirky characters that all come completely fleshed out revealing their own individuality and you'll find them all worming their way right into your heart! The pace is fast with never a dull moment and you'll find yourself going from laughter to tears in this newest installment to her Texan books. This was my first introduction to this prolific author and I can assure you, it won't be my last! -- Highly recommended for those looking for an immensely entertaining read!

Fourteen degrees below zero–cold enough to freeze the soul
Lewis Ingraham is cold. He’s lost his wife to cancer, his executive career, his once sure grip on the world around him. All that he can hold on to is his beautiful daughter Jay, a brilliant student who has become a struggling single mother. But he sees that even Jay is starting to slip away from him, in favor of Stephen, her self-important boyfriend. This time Lewis is going to fight back.
But when Lewis takes out his fury on Stephen, he ignites a chain reaction of violence. Now winter is bearing down on Minnesota. Desire, guilt, and rage are swirling in the snow. And a heinous crime is about to lead three people down a steep and unforgiving slope–into a realm of cold, hard truth.
Set in a chillingly barren milieu and invoking comparisons to Donald Westlake’s bestselling classic The Ax,
14 Degrees Below Zero is a stunning, provocative, and utterly unforgettable experience in psychological suspense and American noir–fashioned from the heat of ordinary lives.
Customer Reviews:
Well Written With Plenty Of Emotional Turmoil.......2005-07-20
Minnesota is a cold place. The memory of mild weather is the only thing that gives hope to the people living there as they battle the long hard winters. Lewis Ingraham is feeling the chill of winter hard this year. He's on antidepressants after the recent torturous death of his wife from cancer and his daughter, Jay only twenty-three with a preschool child of her own, is dating a man Lewis detests.
Lewis isn't certain of much lately. At the advanced age of forty-seven he let his high paying executive career fade away after his wife's death and he's struggling to pay the bills from his new job as a salesmen in a men's store. The medication he's taking doesn't seem to help much because he's as unhappy and bitter as he's ever been, and in addition he isn't in control of his emotions. His boss has told him he's been acting strangely. Lewis is going on a downward spiral of depression and he has negative, sometime violent feelings towards his daughter's boyfriend, Stephen. In his mind, the only reason to continue living is his daughter and his granddaughter; for those two he would fight to the death. As his mental instability progresses, Lewis becomes more comfortable with the idea that doing violence to Stephen would help cement his family together and when his dead wife appears to him, he decides the family must be reunited.
Beautiful and brilliant, Jay is also having a difficult time of it this year. Her mother's death has made life difficult, not only that they loved each other but now she has no buffer between her father and herself. Always a hard emotionally aloof and cold man, her father Lewis never lets Jay forget that she made a mistake by dropping out of a bright college future to have her baby, as an unwed mother, at age nineteen. Jay is working as a waitress and feels stuck in her life. Her father is calling her on the phone from morning to night and she doesn't have the heart or energy to tell him to back off. She's also dating a college professor Stephen and her father hates him. Her father's constant undermining of the relationship is making Jay miserable.
There isn't much suspense in the overall book as the opening chapter starts with an altercation, the most violent act in the story, and then goes back in time to show how it came about. As the outside temperature plummets the outlook for everyone in the story does too.
14 Degrees Below Zero is advertised as a story of psychological suspense but it is not for the usual suspense lover. It's a dark story that's unrelenting in the desperation and despair of its characters and the cold and dark skies of the Minnesota location contributes to the overall feel of the story. Well written, Quinton Skinner, the author will take you through the character's emotional turmoil and will leave you feeling as wrung out and bleak as everyone in the book.

Dual Diagnosis.......2007-01-11
As someone who has been a treatment provider for people with addictive disease and co-occurring disorders for over 20 years, I am very grateful to have such a fine, practical resource for becoming a better provider. Dual Diagnosis, Counseling the Mentally Ill Substance Abuser, Second Edition, by Katie Evans and Dr. J. Michael Sullivan, is, in my opinion the best book out today that addresses the treatment challenge of providing care for this group of individuals. They preserve the integrity of the tried and true, abstinence-based, 12 Step program apporach to treating addiction, while also offering professionals a comprehensive approach to incorporating psychiatric services for other disorders that are present with the addicted person. I thank them for this excellent book. Chip Abernathy, LPC, CAC. Smyrna, GA
Excellent resource.......2006-08-31
This is written by and for clinicians. There is enough general information for the trainee and practical tools for the more seasoned therapist. I find it hard to find comprehensive works on dual diagnosis and addiction. I highly highly recommend this book.

In Letters to a Young Chef, Daniel Boulud, cookbook author, chef, and owner of Daniel, Café Boulud, and DB Bistro Moderne in New York City, briefly covers what he believes are the most important building blocks to becoming a great chef. Boulud grew up on his family's farm in a tiny town near Lyons, France. Like most of today's great European chefs, he took his first kitchen job at the tender age of 14. But his lengthy, successful career in New York City has made him very aware that the path he took to get where he is is very different from the one young American chefs take today. His advice is wise, and could apply to other careers as well: find a mentor, use your connections, work hard, learn how something is done by a successful chef before you try out your own creativity, travel, explore, be loyal to your employer, develop your sense of taste, and learn all aspects of the restaurant business before attempting to go out on your own. Boulud's excellent advice comes from years of experience, and some of the most enjoyable parts of this little book are his anecdotes about the time he spent learning and paying his dues in legendary kitchens, and about the fascinating culinary icons he mixes with today. A quick read by a most fascinating culinary celebrity, you'll wish he shared even more, and that next time he puts pen to paper, it will be for a full-length memoir. --Leora Y. Bloom
Book Description
Written for the professional chef as well as the amateur cook, an invitation into the kitchen from a revered chef who combines traditional technique and modern sensibility
From the reinvention of French food through the fine dining revolution in America, Daniel Boulud has been witness to, and creator of, our contemporary food culture. A modern man with a classical foundation, he speaks with the authority that comes from a lifetime of experience, and no small amount of passion, about the vocation of creating and serving food. Part memoir, part advice book, part recipe book, this delicious celebration of the art of cooking will delight and enlighten chefs of all kinds, from passionate amateurs to serious professionals.
"This is a priceless manual for anyone seriously interested in the restaurant world. Concise, pointed, informative, and candid, it explains simply to the neophyte chef the difficult but wonderful and rewarding world of the kitchen." (Jacques Pepin)
"This is such a charming way to convey the priorities and responsibilities of a chef. Daniel Boulud's enthusiasm is irresistible." (Alice Waters)
"'Taste, Taste, Taste.' Letters from the journey of one of the world's greatest chefs!" (Emeril Lagasse)

Over 30 Chef.......2006-08-12
I came late to food (32 years of age), but I had already learned a vast amount of knowledge about food and food service, via working in my Aunt and Uncle's Restaurant in Spain. I then chose to acquire formal "Chef" qualifications, which doesn't really mean anything; at the end of the day, it's all about experience, your passion for food, and your ability to 'teach' yourself everything about food.
My other point in regards to age is the British Chef, Nico Ladenis. Here's a man, who took a year off to travel France, came back home to London, started cooking from French Cook Books, worked in his friends Greek Restaurant before opening up his own, and then 20 years later, is the first English Chef to have more than 1 Restaurant awarded with Michelin Star ratings, not to mention that he has had amazing apprentices come out of his kitchens: Marco Pierre White, Gordon Ramsay, etc.
I think I would follow passion, drive, professionalism, and love for food and kitchens any day, rather than saying it's all based on what age you come into the kitchen. When you consider that no Chef will ever learn everything about food, everyday is like the first day you walked into a Kitchen. With that attitude and conviction, you can become great! Good luck with your careers.
Letter to another age discriminator.......2006-04-27
This book had me believing. I must say, it still does. The advice is visceral. It's an invaluable guide to sharpening your focus. Daniel is a motivator and it is a true gift to be able to read through these letters. These are the conversations and the answers to the questions you want to spend an entire day asking a great chef, but whom would never have the time of day to speak to you. There is but one issue I have. The title of this book should not be Letters to Young Chef, but rather, Letters to an Adolescent/Teenager/Early 20 somethings Chef. You see, when I picked up this book I interpreted the title as being directed to someone who is either preparing to cook professionally or has been (even for some time) cooking but still feels young in regards to the knowledge they have. Then while reading Pg.85 para 1, Daniel straight up says that this is not a book for a cook who is 30. For him/her it is too late, expect in the rarest of circumstances. This is where Daniel and I disagree, and where I have now become disenchanted with having to finish the rest of the book, although of course, I will. I'm a professional cook who has been working for 4 years starting at 27 now 31. I have always pushed myself to keep up with my younger peers and in the process have realized one thing. They cannot keep up with me! And what I notice most of all, is that my age brings to the table a degree of maturity and obedience to the chef that youth just can't seem to bare. I don't work in the ultra-competitive New York scene but age has absolutely nothing to do with intention and drive. Cooking is not about age. It is about the fire of passion, will and desire to learn and grow, and Daniel completely squelches that fire out of existence with his remarks. Keep being a great Chef Daniel but don't forget that knowledge, (In this case YOURS) should never be sacrificed to age. This goes against the entire philosophy of cooking where one never stops learning and yet will never learn everything before one is dead. Though the true cook/chef at heart tries their best, naturally in vain. Somewhat like Daniels comment. Other than that, so far great book, buy it people.

I enjoyed this book, .......2005-01-16
Except during the chapter "The Trinity of Heat." While I read it, I though, "I spent money on this book! I can't make it through this junk!" But it was only that one chapter and is only a few pages. The rest is engaging and thoughtfull.
Good ideas, lots of name dropping.......2004-05-23
Letters to a Young Chef has many acorns of truth from which oaks will grow. My own thoughts of cooking, and dining out, have been improved by the book. At the same time, Boulud drops so many names of the famous that he knows and has worked that it can become a tedious read.
Too old for success at age 30?.......2004-04-30
Chef Boulud indeed has many interesting and important points to teach the new generation of chefs. However, I am sorely disappointed by this passage..."One more requirement--you need youth. Notice these are Letters to a Young Chef, not a new chef. In other words, if you were thirty years old I would not be writing this to you, because the demands of the job and the competition out there require that you start young, as you have, as I did." (p.85) He goes on to state that there is a chef that he knew who started his career in this fifties, "But he is the exception."
How disappointing to hear that from a top chef in the US. As a career changer, I may not have started at age 14. But I do have the focus AND the dedication that is required for success in this field. Stamina and strength also comes with training and time. So to say that your chances for success in the culinary field is limited because one is thirty!--that is a pretty demoralizing and narrow-minded viewpoint.
Thirty is NOT over-the-hill to start your culinary career. Neither is forty, nor fifty. If you had the will and the heart to do it, you can find success.

My creative juices were nudged to boiling through this book........1999-01-15
From page one the reader is engaged in the creative process that brings us to the 'look' of quilts that has evaded us. Not only does Ms. Marston identify the character of quilting that has drawn so many of us to the art and, until now, been miising from our quilts.....she invites us into and through the process. Amazingly simple techniques are reviewed and once implemented, make 'nice' quilts.....'remarkable' quilts. This one is for any quilter out there who's quilts need "something" or is contemplating their first heirloom quilt. It has redefined my craft and creativity.
FINALLY, a book that understands the hand quilter!.......1998-09-18
From one hand quilter to another, "Quilting With Style" by Gwen Marston and Joe Cunningham is fantastic! It's concise, down to earth, and LOTS of information on the actual hand quilting Designs! It's about time!! They emphasis the importance of the quilting being as beautiful as the piecing or applique of the top itself. What brings a quilt 'to life' and how to choose your designs to accent your quilt top. It's a MUST READ! Karen Bush, Professional Hand Quilter

draw what you can see.......2007-03-27
I am just amazed at how quickly i received these books, i just wish the freight wasn't quite as dear, I would do much more, I give art classes in my studio and am on a limited budget, so to be able to offer these books at a cheaper rate is great , the condition of the books was terrific and have no hesitation in telling other people about this site, which i have done, the choice of art books seem to be much larger then here in Australia and especially the fact that we can get them secondhand in good condition is a plus..... thank you /very happy customer
Excellent.......2007-03-19
This book is excellent for those who want to learn more about drawing. This book is worth buying!
Good resource.......2007-02-15
This is a good book to help you define and sharpen your drawing skills. Even if you think you can't draw, give this book a try. It helps you to see what you're drawing instead of trying to draw what you think you saw. Highly recommended, with many projects in the book to use as practice.
Book Description
SEE like an artist, and draw like a pro!
If you think you can't draw, it's all in your head ... Every time you pick up a pencil, a battle rages between the two sides of your brain: Your analytical brain, which wants to generalize and take shortcuts; and your visual brain, which sees it like it is.
This innovative guide helps the "good guy" always win!
Following the success of his first book, Painting with Your Artist's Brain (North Light Books), Carl Purcell shows that the secret to creating true-to-life renderings--and overcoming the most common drawing problems--is silencing your bossy logical nature and letting your artistic side do what it does best. Thirteen interactive exercises and 10 step-by-step demonstrations lead you on an in-depth exploration of essential drawing skills:
- seeing values correctly
- searching for relationships of angle, size and position
- defining form with line and edge
- exploring the relationship between objects and space
- tying everything together with value patterns
- making the most of your sketchbook
You'll take the same observation-based approach whether you're drawing a pear, a portrait or a landscape. No subject will be beyond your reach, and you'll be amazed at your sudden mastery of drawing!

An observation-based approach covers landscapes, portraits and still life equally, applying important concepts and principles to the mix. Good for Beginners.......2007-05-25
This is a good comprehensive book for beginners and covers most things of importance, but it has a few defects. The reference photos from which the drawings are done are too small, making it difficult to see what the author is talking about. The author leaves his sighting lines on his drawings, which is like leaving up the scaffolding after painting a house--it looks unsightly. He drones on for too long about values. Toward the end of the book, he runs out of things to say, and the book becomes a gallery to show off the author's drawings.

Book Description
Maxim Gershunoff is a natural storyteller so it makes sense that he would want to tell the story of his very full life in show business. Throughout this easy-to-read memoir, the author writes about his personal life interwoven with the lives of music legends, including Benny Goodman, Leonard Bernstein, and Igor Stravinsky, and ballet stars, such as Rudolf Nureyev, Margot Fonteyn, George Balachine, and prima ballerina for the Bolshoi Ballet, Maya Plisetskaya. His close personal and working relationship with Sol Hurok brought Mr. Gershunoff into the company of such diverse personalities as Warren Beatty, Natalie Wood, Howard Hughes, and the Kennedys. His involvement with the Soviet/American Cultural Exchange Program brought Gershunoff into the everyday lives of Soviet performers during a tension-filled time between the US and USSR. Both a personal memoir and history, this compelling story of a renowned manager of the stars gives a unique and candid view into the world of creative arts and its personalities.
Customer Reviews:
A Masterful View of the Arts.......2006-01-31
Gershunoff is a keen observer of character and an excellent judge of artistic quality. This book describes the good, the bad and the ugly in artistic life. The author looks behind the headlines. He gives us a true sense of what it was like to live as a person and as an artist in various parts of the world during the period 1940-80. Because politics played a huge role in the arts (and still does, for that matter!), he has some not-so-flattering things to say about powerful politicians as well as about Isaac Stern and the extremely aggressive way in which he promoted some of his proteges who might not really have been ready for prime time. Stern's constant political machinations also cut into his practice time and affected his own performance quality. And who could ever forget the major hype surrounding the Panovs? Well, here's the real scoop. Want to know how Soviet artists lived during that period? Gershunoff can--and does--tell you, in painful detail. It wasn't pretty. This is a book for those who want to know the real, human stories behind the media hype that sometimes even masqueraded as "hard news." And a great read it is, too!
A great view from backstage.......2005-07-05
Very entertaining - shows a time (1940s - 1980s) when the classical performing arts were much more central in American culture. Lots of stories of Soviet-American cultural exchange during that period including not-so-flattering episodes with the artists. Great for anyone interested in the workings of the performing arts.
