Book Description

Washington, D.C., staffer Jessica Cutler created a sensation last year when, in an on-line weblog meant just for friends, she began chronicling her late-night affairs with Washington power brokers. But word about her dishy and humorous account of her relationships with six different men on Capitol Hill inevitably spread around town and became such a hot topic that it got her fired from her entry-level job in the office of Senator Mike DeWine (an Ohio Republican). Now, in The Washingtonienne, Cutler's real-life experiences in the capital become fodder for a sexy, semi-autobiographical novel that is sure to initiate a new Washington parlor game of Who's Who.

3 out of 5 stars guilty pleasure.......2007-10-03

While the character of this book is seeemingly depraved, heartless, and generally an all around nasty person, the book was highly entertaining. There were moments when her vulnerability shone through, usually after some drug induced bender, and although I do agree it is absolutely an publication of self prostitution, what memoir isn't?

3 out of 5 stars Worth the read ..........2007-09-13

Thought this book was pretty funny but in the end it left me with a bad feeling in my stomach. Jackie may not have learned too much from her mistakes but I learned that people are capable of anything. I have friends who live a similar (but not as dishonorable)life as this chick and I can only imagine the stories I am not hearing about!!
I finished the book in a few hours and it was trashy, funny, and all around entertaining. If you can take trash talk or hearing about some horific sexual acts then stay away from this book but if you have an open mind and can laugh at other peoples insane stories ... get it ... it's entertaining!!

4 out of 5 stars Good experience.......2007-07-23

Product came in the condition that the buyer specificed and it was 100% on time. Would definitely purchase from this buyer again.

3 out of 5 stars A very funny book about a complete mess of a girl.......2007-07-20

"The Washingtonienne" is based on the true story of author Jessica Cutler, whose graphic online blog detailing her sexual exploits got her fired from her low-level job in Washington, D.C. This book tells the story of Jacqueline, a young, self-absorbed women who gets dumped by her fiance and relocates from New York City to Washington, D.C., in search of a new life. Jackie snags a job working in the mailroom of a senator's office, and she and her friends constantly attempt to score free drugs and other expensive things by sleeping their way to the top. Ultimately, Jackie's promiscuity comes back to haunt her when her explicit blog becomes the talk of the town. Jackie finally realizes that she doesn't have much of anything at all: the people she always thought cared about her quickly abandon her once the scandal erupts, and the one guy Jackie really cares about may be lost to her forever.

Is "The Washingtonienne" great literature? Of course not. It's a mindless, fluffy read that's filled with profanity and graphic descriptions of sex and drug use. However, it's also hysterically funny. Jackie and her friends are so unbelievably clueless, but you can't help laughing at their exploits. I lost count at the number of men Jackie sleeps with in this book: she is such a mess! It's amazing that she didn't end up dead at the end of the novel, considering all the terrible choices she made. However, a basket case of a character makes for very entertaining reading, and I enjoyed this book a lot. (The fact that Jackie is so obviously based on Jessica is pretty frightening, though.) If you can't handle a lot of f-bombs and sex talk, then this is not the book for you. However, if you're in the mood for something that's lewd, smutty, and hilarious, you should definitely check it out.

2 out of 5 stars Ugh.......2007-06-27

Usually i love chick lit but this book was awful. The main character is so unlikeable. She is very slutty and does drugs. I am not a prudish person whatsoever but this book really bothered me for some reason. I do not recommend this book to anyone.

When Norda Allison sees her husband-to-be slap his young son, she immediately calls off the wedding. Now she is terrified. Her ex-fiancé has beat up her new boyfriend. Anonymous newspaper clippings are flooding her mailbox--articles graphically depicting what jilted men do to the women who leave them. Then Norda's life takes an even darker turn. 4 out of 5 stars The Puzzle Hidden in Plain Sight.......2005-11-06

The 'Foreword' is dedicated to Lester Adelson, M.D. who was then working with the coroner of Cuyahoga County in Cleveland Ohio. Legal medicine and autopsies help the living. Dr. Adelson believes his allegiance is to the TRUTH, not to the side that hired him. A Medical Examiner should study the dead to help the living. Murder cases are but a small fraction compared to accidental deaths (traffic, industrial, or at home). Suicide is much more frequent than murder. Sudden deaths can appear to be suicide, homicide, or accidental. Unsuspected infectious diseases are one threat to the community. The forensic pathologist is important to the public interest, and should be an impartial fact-finder.

Mervin Selkirk is conversing with Norda Allison when he slaps his seven-year old son Robert for interrupting. Suddenly Norda sees the sadistic streak behind the mask of smiling politeness and affability over the selfish personality. Norda dislikes this discipline but Mervin says she's a "softie". The result is the breaking of their engagement. A few days later Mervin punches Norda's boyfriend, Nate Benedict, in a restaurant. Mervin explains it as self-defense and his friends there back his story. Later Norda gets anonymous letters about suitors who killed former fiancees. The postal authorities couldn't catch the sender. Mervin's previous wife, Lorraine Selkirk Jennings, tells of a toy printing machine; this is enough for a search warrant on Mervin. The toy printing press doesn't match. His first wife tells of Mervin's ruthlessness and cleverness, and the power of his family. Then Lorraine sends a flight ticket to arrange for a meeting in person. The Jennings surprise Norda with their plans; is this some sort of trick? They have an excuse for Robert's absence. [Did you suspect anything?]

Something happens during the night, Norda packs and leaves, then visits Perry Mason to tell of the problems. The investigation does not agree with Norda's claims. Something's wrong here. The mystery deepens when a gun is found in the bed where Norda Allison slept. The police were called and took Norda in for questioning. We soon learn the reason for this activity: Mervin Selkirk was found shot dead in his car, parked at the Country Club. Perry is visited by Nate Benedict, who has a permit to carry the gun he brought on his flight from San Francisco. Nate also owns a gun like the murder weapon. Perry meets Mervin's father Horace Livermore Selkirk, as unscrupulous as he is powerful, and he is very powerful. Perry and Della use a ruse to interview Robert's baby-sitter. By following Barton Jennings they find a clue to where Robert was taken. New facts are discovered to complicate the mystery. Chapter 12 starts to uncover the mystery and the disappearance of Robert. Perry meets the young woman who was placed in charge, and talks to her about the laws and her actions.

The Preliminary Hearing starts in Chapter 14. Perry's cross-examination of Sgt. Holcomb raises questions about the prosecution's theory of the crime. Other facts are brought out in the testimonies to clarify the question of guilt. But there is a new fact that connects Norda to the dead body of Mervin! The judge calls for a conference at the noon recess and there is a new development that could free Perry's client. But a shocking surprise shakes Horace Selkirk. Hamilton Burger brings in his surprise witness who was at the Country Club parking lot (Chapter 17). Perry's cross-examination of Millicent Bailey neutralizes her testimony. Then Barton Jennings appears as a witness, and tells of what he knows. Perry's cross-examination has this witness contradicting his testimony. Then another witness is recalled so Perry can question her. Now there is another material fact that is brought out. Norda is released from custody. The last chapter resolves the outstanding questions and explains the unknown events. Erle Stanley Gardner describes the corrupt and powerful people who run society, albeit in fiction. Like other novels, the courtroom scenes are the dramatic high points.

5 out of 5 stars Book Review.......2004-05-10

This Perry Mason book is a suspenseful action thriller and a spectacular page turner. "The Case of The Deadly Toy" is about a woman, Norda Alison who is convicted of murder after her ex-fiancé is found dead and the murder weapon is found hidden under her pillow. This book is very well written and keeps you clueless of the real murderer until the last few pages in the book. Norda Allison is the victim of a conspiracy between her ex-fiancés former wife and her husband. Perry Mason does a great job keeping the reader active and having new suspenseful ideas on every page. Perry, his secretary Debra, his close friend and detective Paul Drake do a great job solving the mystery after all hope is lost. The book is very exciting after Norda's ex-fiancés former wife's son fires a gun shot heard early in the morning and Norda's ex-fiancé is found dead the next morning. I recommend this book to anyone who likes mystery books and I think everyone will love and cherish this book.

Contrary to the contributer who felt qualified to submit a review despite knowing nothing about T'ai Chi, this book is most useful.

I've read everything in English I can get my hands on about T'ai Chi, and was delighted to find this. Please, all you T'ai chi teachers out there, share this with your students. Despite the cute and off-putting title, it is an excellent and worthy work. The author did her research and knows her stuff. I've studied T'ai Chi a long time, traveled to China to check it out, and find that the author has most successfully translated the elusive art to Westerners.

Congratulations to you if you can get your hands on this!

Buy the book, keep it, study it, then move on to The Tao of tai-chi chuan: by Tsung Hwa Jou. Now there is some challenging reading, worth reading over and over!

2 out of 5 stars Not very well done.......2002-09-12

First off, I'm not an expert on T'ai Chi, so I'm not qualified to tell you whether this book presents an accurate portrait of T'ai Chi or not. I'm just a beginner, and I was looking for a suitable book for beginners. I have found many dummies books to be of extremely high quality, written by experts who are able to distill their knowledge effectively to teach people who don't know anything about the subject. However, I found this book disappointing. The author seems to have practiced for only a few years, and doesn't seem to have the broad base of knowledge of an expert. As such, I would feel uncomfortable relying on this book for information. It's not a bad introduction to the topic, and if all you're interested in is learning some basic moves to add to your exercise routine, this book will help you get started. But if you really want to understand T'ai Chi, I wouldn't trust this book to teach it to you.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book With a caution.......2002-01-07

Lots of books on Tai Chi and Qi Gong out there, this is the best one for the beginner. Good explanations of the 24 form Yang Style set, with a sense of humor and a love of the form and its history. Does emphasize correctly the energy aspect of the exercise.Added bonus: The Eight Pieces of Brocade, a classic Qi Gong system. So what's the caution. It is really impossible to learn Tai Chi from a book or video. You need correction, correction and more correction. You need the insights only a teacher can give you. This book is great as a text to go along with what you are being taught. For that reason, I recommend it highly.

This is a really good book, I shopped for vegetables in a store that only had the chinese writing above the produce, but with this book I was able to find all the vegetables I wanted.

I tried a few recipies from the book the last few weeks, and they are quite tasty...

Very easy to use, and a great guide when shopping in a market where no one speaks English or all the writing is Chinese!!!

3 out of 5 stars An average book with good recipes but poor reference info........2005-02-24

`Asian Greens' by Anita Loh-Yien Lau is a poor book with a few good points that make it a real disappointment that the author and her editors could not put together a more useful volume.

The few good points of the book are that the presentation is relatively straightforward and simple and the photographs of the produce is better than several other books on the same or similar topics. The most similar book I have reviewed on the same subject is Sara Deseran's `Asian Vegetables'. And, aside from the somewhat odd way this book has with the color photographs of vegetables, it is in almost every way a more rewarding book. It is certainly free of the many errors of fact and oddities of layout, which infest Ms. Lau's book.

While Ms. Deseran's `Asian Vegetables' is better than the title under consideration in this review, it is still not a very weighty book. It is a typically colorful Chronicle Books issue that gives a pleasantly light treatment of its subject. If you want the straight poop with lots of details, get neither of these books and spend your money on `Bruce Cost's Asian Ingredients', which covers the full range of Asian groceries, albeit with no pretty color photographs.

Getting back to Ms. Lau's effort published by St. Martins Griffin, I am really surprised that such a respected publishing house as St. Martins would let this get out under their imprimatur. The three most annoying problems with the book are errors in fact, the loosely assigned names given for products, and the odd arrangements of topics. The most glaring error is the statement that the Thai Bird pepper is stronger than the Habanero. I know the Thai Bird chile is hot, but last time I checked out the Scolville scale, the Habanero was still king of the roost. This entry is also an example of my second gripe in that the chile is labeled as Bird's Eye chile. While this is a confirmed name for this little red devil as checked in Jacki Passmore's `The Encyclopedia of Asian Food and Cooking', it is not the name most commonly known to western readers. Most other books refer to it as the Thai chile or the Thai Bird chile. Similar examples of weak naming are in names for `Basil' and `Eggplant'. Both are very common products in Mediterranean cuisine, yet the author does not avoid confusion by giving us a name appropriate to the Oriental product, since she makes the point that the oriental product is different from the western product. Giving aubergine as an alternate name for eggplant compounds the confusion. A linguistic conservative would argue that `aubergine', being a French / Italian name, should only be applied to eggplants grown in France and Italy, not to the distinctively different Japanese eggplants.

Possibly the greatest annoyance in this book is the sloppy arrangement of topics. It is probably entirely too picky to complain about the fact that close to half of the vegetables discussed in the book are not greens. It is not too picky to point out that under the `Greens Guide' to green, purple, orange, brown, and red vegetables, one section is labeled `Fruit Vegetables' and it lists four melons, a gourd, and eggplant. The sense of the title is that these are fruits that are commonly counted among the vegetables, but the book gives no hint that this is the intent of the section.

A similar annoyance is the fact that the book contains a chapter of recipes for fish, yet two major recipes in the `Side Dishes, Soups, and Salads' chapter are primarily seafood recipes. This chapter also has a `Meat and Poultry' chapter of recipes, yet the `Side Dishes...' chapter contains recipes with chicken. I have seen this before in other books, but not in books which are about such a very specific subject.

A final annoyance in the produce naming is the fact that the author gives several synonyms for each lead English name, with no indication of the language from which these names come. This is not trivial, as when you are looking for a bottle gourd in a Vietnamese grocery store, you would want to know which of its seven (7) names is used in Vietnam. Another fact which makes this an important observation is that there are several excellent books on this subject which do go to the trouble of giving us the Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, and Tagalog names for these veggies, not to mention the Latin scientific name.

This book is a weak title in a field for which there are a surprisingly large number of better books available. Like all the other reviewers who rate the book so highly, I agree the recipes are decent, but this is simply just an average cookbook with general information on the ingredients which is below the average level of quality for books on this subject.

                        5 out of 5 stars Versatile, practical, every-day recipes.......2002-04-24

This is a cookbook used both by myself and my grown son. I bought it for the very simple but elegant recipes such as Wilted Amaranth in Pine Nut Dressing, Mixed Vegetables with Peanut Sauce, and Quick Asian Greens Soup. In all cases the recipes are flexible i.e. one can readily adapt the recipe to the vegetables at hand. My son, however, focuses on recipes such as Chicken with Thai Basil and Beef Brisket Stew with Daikon.

In all cases, ingredients are readily available in an urban area. The instructions are clear.

That is not to say that the recipes are perfect. Chicken with Thai Basil, for example, is too salty for our taste ... so we cut the fish sauce with sake. The Asian Vegetable Stew, a recipe that caught my eye when purusing the book, has an excellent flavor but I have yet to find a butternut squash that will cook sufficiently when instructions are religiously followed - so I keep experimenting with how long to cook the squash alone. However, these recipes are so simple and versatile it takes little effort to adapt to one's own taste.

In short, I highly recommend this cookbook.

5 out of 5 stars Greens are Good!.......2002-01-06

How refreshing to read a cookbook which is both informative, easy to follow and is written simply and cleanly.

Being located in the Asia-Pacific region (Australia to be exact) I find this book well suited to the modern Australian taste bud and palette. Australians are very familiar with and fond of Asian cooking, if not always the authentic version, at least some formulation of it. Ms Lau's book provides easy at home directions for the new home cook/chef starting out, which is the category I fit into. As with the UK's Jamie Oliver, "Asian Greens" is adventurous, and the layout is such that it invites the reader to try new things which at the same time are not difficult or daunting.

I can see this book being a favourite in Noosa (Queensland) and Byron Bay (New South Wales) if people can get their hands on it. I discovered it by looking on amazon.com

I particularly like the the glossary of vegetables, the so called "Greens Guide". For the non-Asian or the uninformed, this guide is most helpful for getting what you want and need into your shopping cart/trolley/basket.

Many of the meals are great for the single person who is oft not inspired to cook (this does inspire!), while also being suitable for couples and families.

I enjoyed the personl anecdotes and descriptors with each recipe. I particularly like the cover and the layout of the book and the information about the author. With chefs like the wonderful Jamie Oliver about, we want some character and fun in our writers and presenters and a little bit of who they are.

The new approach to cooking - keeping it simple, clean and fun, it what we all needed and I am excited to add this book to my slowly growing pile of useful books (and tossing the huge, complicated ones out!)

I just love love love the Asian pesto on page 47, the choy sum and tofu on page 77 and the unusual spiced tofu and long beans with turkey on page 94.

I liked the low level use of pork, as being a non-pork eater it is great to find a book not bursting with this meat. I much prefer the emphasis on the greens, tofu, fish and other meats in the book.

                        5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!.......2001-11-28

This was originally a book of my mother's but I've been hogging it ever since I chanced upon it in her living room. Even though the recipes are easy, the flavors were very refined and tasty. I've got my own copy now and must say, if you are stuck for something to give for X'mas, this is a nice gift for anyone who loves to cook but doesn't want to spend too much time in the kitchen.

This book was a rather daring undertaking. As you probably know many years and many lines of print were spent decrying the plethora of Dali forgeries and photomechanical reproductions of his works printed on pre-signed paper. It was a scandal, it was scandalous, to be sure. So, for instance, when I was involved with the sale of prints by Dali, an editorical choice was made to never ever sell a Dali Lithograph for the simple reason that there was just too much stink surrounding them. In fact, I was under the impression that virtually all of his alleged work product of lithographs was phony partially because of his self-professed disdain for the medium. This book disabused me of this notion because it is full of very early and often, I hate to say it, visually exciting and beautiful works by the man that really causes one to wish to own some. This book does discuss the scandal surrounding Dali briefly, very briefly, and notes that the editors got far less cooperation from various galleries in the course of their research than they did for the first volume of the catalogue which dealt with the etcthings, etc. No mention was made of the multi-million dollar judgment against Center Art Galleries in Hawaii, for instance, that was apparently responsible for a whole boat load of the inauthentic stuff. Anyway, the book is broken up into three parts. The introductory discussion, roughly 75 pages of well-done full color reproductions and roughly 100 pps. of cataloguing data recording edition size, printer, medium, etc. I don't believe that any of the photomechanical reproductions produced by Center are included but I do notice a Center Art Gallery commissioned series or two. In that vein, the page dedicated to known forgeries and unauthorized edtions is only about, well one half page. This seems far too short, and the editors admit to the herculean task it would be to get more extensive and accurate information in print. Suffice it to say that a lot of swamp land ground was not covered. I'd recommend sticking strictly to the, ahem, book in your search for Dali Lithographs and let the sands of time sort out the sordid bits in another, different book. This comes with my highest recommendation especially for print collectors.

2 out of 5 stars Overview with obvious mistakes and lack of information.......2000-08-05

The graphic work of the surrealist Dalí is voluminous and makes understandable how much work there was necessary to produce this book. Though it shows clearly more then only a few bad mistakes and a lack of information, like proofed by the "Official Catalog of Graphic Works of Salvador Dalí", which is required by international museums and written by Albert Field, the official Dalí-Archivar, authorized by Dalí himself and accepted as an expert by international museums and courts all over the world. In contrast to this book, published by Dali specialist Brana Fine Art, the Michler/Löpsinger book remains very superficial only also concerning the announced details of forgeries. A redaer looking for an overview of a part of the graphic works of Salvador Dali may find it in this book, though over all, also together with the accompaniing second volume, both volumes do miss the high claimed aims.

5 out of 5 stars American Furniture of the 18th Century.......2007-01-21

This is a great book at an extraordinary price. I would prefer that more of the pictures were in color but that would have increased the price of the book, maybe, beyond what I was willing to spend. If you want to learn about 18th century furniture making, this is the best there is. Greene has a writing style that is very clear and a pleasure to read. I cant say enough about this book.

                        5 out of 5 stars A "must-buy" book for furniture makers.......2003-01-05

This is a simply fabulous book. Its split into two sections; a furniture history section and a "how-to" section, describing basic techniques. These two sections make the book a great, informative read. BUT what makes this a "must buy" are the appendices. Greene shows exploded views of virtually all the basic furniture types. While these pictures aren't project plans, they provide invaluable information about the guts of antique furniture. The other appendix I like is the one showing 18th century recipes for finishes. I tried a few and they work great.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent all-around reference for this period furniture.......2001-01-01

Greene's book does a good job of providing a woodworker (or others interested in period pieces) with solid information on many selected pieces from the era of the title. He does a good job of selecting pieces of good taste, and gives a lot of information on various details with just the right amount of how-to. There is also a lot of historical background info for those who like to know about the history of a piece or style before they build it. The pictures and exploded drawings (showing joinery) are excellent. Though not a comprehensive encyclopedia (it's not intended to be one) it is a good read from start to finish or a good reference book. Well worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars A selection of fine furniture.......1999-01-07

This book has an excellent selection of photographs of fine furniture of the 18th Century. The most notable thing about the book is that the author has exhibited fairly good taste in his selection of specimens to include, and has largely ignored the more shabby pieces of the era. This is in contrast with Nutting's "Furniture Treasury", which has truly extensive selections of photographs of all furniture of the era (good, bad, or indifferent). Greene's book also contains good historical information on the furniture trade of that era, and has an excellent bibliography of furniture books written in the 18th Century (some of which remain available).

The author is a former mechanical engineer, who now hand crafts replica 18th Century furniture for a living.

5 out of 5 stars an book that treats the subject with the depth it deserves.......1998-12-13

Greene's book draws on many disciplines to explain a whole fabric of history, design, and construction. It explains how and why furniture of the period came to be as it is. The design and construction of the furniture is presented in the context of the time it was made. It illustrates and explains the construction through representative examples. It shouldn't be confused with "how-to" books of measured drawings.

                          Book Description

Here in a single volume is a practical, comprehensive training course for budding illustrators working to master comic book art, graphic novels, fantasy posters, sci-fi book covers and illustrations, and computer games. The author, a highly successful fantasy artist, teaches the basics of human anatomical drawing and musculature, as well as perspective and composition. He then instructs on ways to distort, develop, and transform the human figure, giving it features that range from monstrous or magical to super-agile or larger than life. Detailed artist's references and step-by-step instructions show how to build bodies that truly stretch the imagination—mighty alien warriors, kick-boxing cyber-punks, and mega-muscled superheroes, to name just a few. Art students also learn how to show their characters in many different dynamic action poses, such as flying, spinning, punching, and jumping, as well as how to express each character's emotions through facial expressions. More than 300 color illustrations.

Thankfully, I was able to browse at this in my public library before buying it. The title doesn't reflect on the actual book. While the illustrations were clear and quiet a few were lovely the book failed to explain how the artists used anatomy and how they determined how to compose their figures. for an anatomy book, this falls horrible short. There about a handful (literally one handfull) of pages with live models. The images are of various sizes and almost on top of each other. More annoyingly for what few live model poses we are given the best are put inbetween two pages. You'll have an annoyign crease righti n the middle of the picture. It's not that hard to fill in the gaps, but certain details are lost from this type of placement.
Also when going into skeletal structures he might have used a real model skeleton instead of sketches. You don't get an adequate understanding of dimension with a pencil depiction alone. Also, most of the book is dedicated to the common characters of comics (e.g. the barabarian, the female robot, Muu the fatman, Brutus the hulk). All these characters really show are sketches at different angles with bullets with brief common sense info.
Plus the anatomy of most of the characters arenot really explored. It would have been nicer had they compared the exagerated features with realistic features.
Overall , despite some talented artists' contributions, this book fails in teaching anything abotu anatomy.

Get Drawing and painting Fantasy Figures and/or Fantasy Worlds first. This book is good if you can't get enough of source/guide/inspirational material.

Of Course, R. Crumb said "Wanna know how to draw better? Draw. Wishing won't make it happen!" and that's the first and best advice. Still, I have all these books I mentioned and do not regret my purchase!

I'd have to say this book isn't another "How To" in terms of the basics of learning anatomy. This book is best described as a "Coursework Guide to Anatomy" the misleading title may make you think this is yet another basic how to draw that you see in other books. What this book does is something I really haven't see much in other books and puts it together in a really good outline that if you were a student studying the human form in a year, these are the projects you do to learn the figure through and through.

The first section shows first semester students studying proportion. It is done in a combination of cut outs and paint strokes. Sketches were done to get the student familiar with the proportion rather than anatomic details.

The focus turns to contrapposto, the physics of how the body shifts the pelvis and weight to regain its center of gravity while standing.

The book then shifts on focusing on individual parts of the anatomy before working the body as a whole.

Favorite parts of this book has to do with making various bone structures into geometric shapes and planes. It gives a better understanding on how to construct the skull and the planes of the face, and the shoulder and pelvis.

This book is a MUST have with any anatomy book that is usually recommended. The various course guides really are inspirational and ingenious as to how to learn the figure.

I really love the print quality of the book as well. Nice glossy paper and great demonstrations from other students in how to learn the figure.

The drawback is that the author seems to have picked up the thesaurus a bit much and could have offered more clear writing for the beginner since the book says this is good for beginners too.

This book will probably become one of my "Tier 3" books I'd say one has to get to learn figure drawing. 1. Constructive Anatomy 2. (A good artistic guide to Anatomy and Figure drawing) 3. This book.

This was definitely worth the purchase!

So if you may give me some information about how I can get it in Spanish (I believe that not exist), or in English (in second place more easy for me), I would thanks you send me the way.

Bammes has put together one of the greatest collections of figure drawings in this book. Whether you're just beginning to tackle the problems of life drawing or you're an expert at translating the human anatomy to paper, this book should be positioned next to your sketching pads at all times. Not only does Bammes explain how artists might attack a problem, he uses illustrations from variety of sources. This is especially valuable because while readers see the artists solutions, many varieties of styles and mediums are represented. Drawings include simple gestural figure composed of a few graphite marks to complex figures with shadings and highlights. Because this is such a big thick book, readers can be sure that the human figure is explored from almost every angles. The variety of styles may also serve as points of inspiration. The Artist's Guide to Human Anatomy is not quite the artists' bible, but it's just as essential.

                                Book Description

Based on “Gray's Anatomy,” the classic reference volume used for more than a century by medical students around the world, “Pocket Anatomy” offers a brand-new approach to the study of human body structure. Featuring all the fine illustrations found in the original, this new book presents a fresher, more accessible text that explains in lay terms exactly how the hip bone is connected to the thigh bone. Although it possesses the reliability and authority of a technical manual, “Pocket Anatomy” is organized so that non-specialist readers can understand both text and illustrations. Each bone joint and muscular group is shown from a variety of angles and poses, allowing readers to get a full understanding of its function. Not only medical students, but artists and art students will find “Pocket Anatomy” an invaluable and visually appealing reference source. Printed in full color, it presents 350 illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars Raised on Judy! How did Rick McKay KNOW?!.......2003-02-10

This book is worth the price just for the chapter, "Raised on Judy, or What Chance Did a Boy Have." I have never seen Judy written about (and I have read a LOT) which such humor and compassion - especially what it was like growing up as a kid in the mid west during her years as a fading icon. Rick McKay's chapter is mah-velous. The rest of the book is quite good and a real Garlandophile's treat, but the McKay chapter could have been my life - or many of my friends' lives as well. It is a crime that this book is out of print. I would give it for Xmas every year!

4 out of 5 stars Another Garland Book With a Slightly Different Angle.......1999-07-01

Rainbow: A Star-Studded Tribute to Judy Garland is a collection mostly consisting of magazine articles from the 1930s, '40s, '50s, '60s, and afterwards. There are a few other things, like MGM production notes for The Wizard of Oz, but it's almost all magazine excerpts, and it's interesting finding out just what the public's perception of her was, both before and after her death. Just don't go in looking for a deep character study.
