New York magazine's witty, cheeky book critic Walter Kirn rides high in his exhilarating second novel, and so does his protagonist, Minnesota teen dweeb Justin Cobb. Justin's hippie dentist may have hypnotized him out of his socially perilous thumbsucking habit, but he can't suppress the boy's "oral gift." Justin's mouth just won't quit: beer, decongestants, nitrous oxide, cough syrup, Midol, and Ritalin go in, and out spritzes hilarious commentary on his eccentric yet authentic life and times. Our hero's mood larks and plunges erratically, but Kirn's prose is alert, artful, under control. The debate coach's skin is "the neutral hue of turkey meat." One of Justin's realistically inconclusive crushes is a redhead "with freckles the color of new pennies." Her dad is a Limbaughesque columnist who calls welfare recipients "food tramps." Meanwhile, Justin's dad, Mike, is "the Führer of fly-fishing," an ex-gridiron hero obsessed with deer hunting (and eating). He's also prone to spouting his vile old coach's preposterous apothegms ("Until you're broken, you don't know what you're made of"). Mike is funny and poignant--a tricky note to hit.
Like a mucked-up modern Huck Finn plying his own stream of consciousness, Justin drifts into weird scenes: a job at a gas station fated for torching, a visit by his mad Winnebago vagabond grandparents, a kidnapping caper to rescue a pothead infant from sinister hick parents, Grit and Munch. Chapter 4, about a Chippewa City debate meet and rather chaste orgy, is dazzling teen satire. Not that Thumbsucker is flawless: Justin's nurse mom is a vague character, his more vivid kid brother is inexplicably ignored, the satire of the Hazelden celeb rehab is lame, and, like Huck's, Justin's adventures sort of peter out instead of leading up to a slam-bang finale. The family's conversion to Mormonism seems arbitrary, though richly detailed, since Kirn was a small-town Mormon kid.
Flaws, schmaws. Thumbsucker is the truest book about adolescence I've read since This Boy's Life, and Kirn is some kind of comic genius. --Tim Appelo
Book Description
This eighties-centric, Ritalin-fueled, pitch-perfect comic novel by a writer to watch brings energy and originality to the classic Midwestern coming-of-age story.
Meet Justin Cobb, "the King Kong of oral obsessives" (as his dentist dubs him) and the most appealingly bright and screwed-up fictional adolescent since Holden Caulfield donned his hunter's cap. For years, no remedy--not orthodontia, not the escalating threats of his father, Mike, a washed-out linebacker turned sporting goods entrepreneur, not the noxious cayenne pepper-based Suk-No-Mor--can cure Justin's thumbsucking habit.
Then a course of hypnosis seemingly does the trick, but true to the conservation of neurotic energy, the problem doesn't so much disappear as relocate. Sex, substance abuse, speech team, fly-fishing, honest work, even Mormonism--Justin throws himself into each pursuit with a hyperactive energy that even his daily Ritalin dose does little to blunt.
Each time, however, he discovers that there is no escaping the unruly imperatives of his self and the confines of his deeply eccentric family. The only "cure" for the adolescent condition is time and distance.
Always funny, sometimes hilariously so, occasionally poignant, and even disturbing, deeply wise on the vexed subject of fathers and sons, Walter Kirn's
Thumbsucker is an utterly fresh and all-American take on the painful process of growing up.

Read it in ONE SITTING!.......2005-08-23
So, I saw the tralier for Mike Mills' film adaptation of this book a few weeks ago and decided that since I live in North Louisiana and I probably won't get to see the film until it comes to DVD (unless I drive a few hundred miles to an independent theater), that I would buy the book. So, I ordered it and it came in the mail on a Saturday afternoon. Given that my life is pretty boring altogether, especially in the Summer, I unwrapped it, opened it up, and dived in. And, I kid you not, I did not stop reading until I was done. From the first paragraph, scratch that...the first LINE, I was hooked. Now, I will admit that I am a sucker for a good coming of age, Holden Caulfield-esque novel, but this one really surpassed my expectations. As an English major and hopeful writer (fingers crossed), I found this to be one of the most thoughtful, insightful, dramatic, and darkly humorous novel's I've ever read. I think Walter Kirn did a fantastic job of portraying his characters as authentic specimens and I am extremely jealous of his writing style altogether. All in all, I would recommend this book to anyone with and open mind and an afternoon to spare, because they won't be able to put it down.
good Young Adult reading.......2005-04-27
3.5 stars. The cynicism of the narrator's world never completely lifts, but the narrative moves briskly along from one warped vignette to another. I don't think there's a single profanity uttered but the sense of a crude, self-loathing father is conveyed adequately. An interesting introduction to Mormon conversion tactics.
If you like "The Sleeping Father"..........2005-03-11
Who can resist a title like that? I ordered this book a few years ago based on the author's reputation. I finally got around to reading it, because a movie adaptation is coming out soon. Thumbsucker is about sixteen-year-old Justin Cobb. His Midwestern coming-of-age story is not your grandfather's coming-of-age story. His painful adolescence is marked by thumb sucking, Ritalin, hypnosis and eventually conversion to Mormonism. A quirky and amusing tale that reminded me of The Sleeping Father by Matthew Sharpe.
Thumbersucker and then some.......2003-06-17
Justin Cobb tried EVERYTHING to stop sucking his thumb. Finally his dentist suggests hypnosis. After this hypnosis (performed by the dentist) Justin seems to forgo thumbsucking, but the story doesn't end there. Justin turns to sex, drugs, fishing, working, speech team, and even Mormonism to relieve his neurotic energy. On another visit to his dentist, he is diagnosed as having Attention Deficit Disorder. With each of his new obsessions, Justin is thrown into another dilemma.
This book has a great dose of humor while it tackles some serious issues. In one part, Justin goes with a girlfriend to buy drugs. The dealer puts a baby in a box and blows marijuana smoke in the box. After leaving, Justin and his friend plot to kidnap the kid and turn it over to authorities. Of course, nothing in Justin's life goes as planned and it has a humorous twist. This is just one of many adventures that Justin faces during this book.
As if Justin's personal problems aren't enough for him to dea with, throw in his essentric family. You can't go wrong with this book!
I couldn't put it down........2003-04-15
I didn't LOVE this book, but I still could not find myself to put it down. It was interesting, and at times, even good, but I just could not in anyway identify myself with any of the characters because they all seemed a little inconsistant and, well, fictional. This book allowed me to pass the time, and I did finish it, so I have to give it points for keeping my intrest. I was deeply dissapointed in the ending, though.

First in the Owen Archer Series.......2007-03-09
Candace Robb has read and researched medieval history for many years, having studied for a Ph.D. in Medieval and Anglo-Saxon Literature. She divides her time between Seattle and the UK, frequently spending time in Scotland and York to research her books.
York is very close to my own home and many of the places mentioned in the Owen Archer books are still there to be seen and of course Archbishop John Thorseby is mentioned in the records of York Minster. All this adds spice for me and helps me to picture the time and events that took place. This is the second novel in what is proving to be a captivating series.
It is the middle of the 14th century in England and in the city of York the people are dying under mysterious circumstances. There is a common thread to all of the death, they have all taken herbal remedies dispensed by Nicholas Wilton, whose apothecary shop lies in the shadow of York Minster, one of England's most beautiful offerings to the glory of God. Nicholas is a most respected apothecary, surely he would not make the mistakes that are proving fatal?
Owen Archer, one time Captain of a group of Welsh Archers, with a knack of being able to unravel mysteries is dispatched into York to try to get to the bottom of the mystery.
MAYBE BOOK 2 WILL BE BETTER?.......2003-06-10
I really wanted to like this book, but found it ultimately lacking in depth. As a big fan of historical fiction I was immediately enticed by the character, an ex archer wounded fighting for Edward III who finds himself working for the Archbishop of York as a pseudo spy - our man, Owen Archer. The big bummer is that we get almost no history in the narrative save for some insider info Apothecary procedures. She explains in the back of the book Author's Note that she avoided too much history in order to focus on the story (is it some sort of rule that these series books clock in at 300 pages?). As a fan of both mysteries and history I would like to fall into the period a little more - too many historical fiction novels simply use their chosen time period as a mere backdrop to their story. The "mystery" here is really nothing new - a poisoning. The culprit is immediately known to the reader because Robb goes out of her way to make sure we know he's bad. This book, like many other mysteries, is a journey of discovery with Owen as he figures it all out. My other problem comes lies in Robbýs' overuse of convenience and coincidence. Case in point without a spoiler - Owen's lodging overlooks an area (Luci's backyard) that the story would require him to see in order for everything to workout the way it did. I know it's cryptic, but if you've read the story you can't deny it. One last problem with Robbýs' style is that she periodically addresses the reader using what normally would be a character's inner thought (almost never italicized in this book) to address the reader. Not a big complaint, but nevertheless, annoying.
Bottom Line: Despite my comments above this book is not a total failure and I might give one more a shot to see if Owen develops any.
Impressive work of historical fiction........2003-05-06
I have enjoyed the Owen Archer series since a patient of mine suggested the books. This is my third venture into the 14th Century and the first of the series. In Apothecary Rose the author introduces most of the main characters: The Archbishop of York and King's Chancellor Thorsby, his spy/sleuth Owen Archer, Owen's apothecary wife Lucie Wilton, the infirmarian Brother Wulfstan, the mysterious healer Magda Digby, and the helpful neighbors and local pub owners Bess and Tom. With this work, the author sets up the personalities and histories of her characters, their new relationships, the format of this and succeeding stories, and introduces the main players on the historical stage of the time.
Like Ellis Peters (Brother Cadfael) with whom she is often compared, Ms Robb has a good handle on the mystery story as set in old England. She keeps to the story, but insists that it remain as historically accurate as she is able to make it. As she points out in one of her expositions on writing historical fiction, she attempts to produce a work that is as true to the time as possible, taking liberties only where there is no data and where her theories are at least plausible. Ms Robb is a professionally trained historian shy of a PhD only by a dissertation, and seems to have a feel for her time period of choice. She creates a realistic ambiance without burdening her readers with more information than they need to visualize the setting and characters.
One of the interesting facets of this story is the clear understanding that one gains of the social life of the times. The author is able to recreate the intertwined nature of church and secular authority. She also makes it clear that, no matter how we feel about religion, the religious, or God today, the early Europeans, in this case the English, were often quite serious about their beliefs. Even the very ambitious churchmen, like the Archbishop, who were involved in political intrigue, plot and counterplot were not totally lacking in belief. Why this might have been--and in fact why it is less so now--becomes more apparent when one is placed in the precarious setting of the Middle Ages.
Another of the things that the author is able to put across for the reader is that much of what is taken as "unfounded," anti-science herbal remedies today, have a long and respected history behind them. The apothecary underwent a lengthy training period or apprenticeship before practicing his/her craft, much as a modern pharmacist does today. Furthermore, there were specialties in the health care world of the time, just as there are today. In a world before antibiotics, much of what these people could do to heal and to relieve suffering was impressive. It may not measure up to today's standards, but the technology and economic wherewithal for modern medicine did not exist at the time and in fact still doesn't in many 3rd World countries.
Very impressive work. It might make a good introduction to this period in history for students.
Very good! Read in a day........2002-07-13
I liked the mystery very much, it wasn't so much who killed who as it was about why, what was the mystery and motivations. I found it very suspenseful and I enjoyed the characters tremendously -OK Lucie U Bro Wulfsten were tolerable- Owen, Bess, Thorseby, Magda & the Summoner all thought were good well-developed characters. I liked Owen very much and will read the next book in the series asap.
An Owen Archer Mystery: book one in this series.......2002-06-07
I truly enjoyed this book and plan to read the entire series. It was through a romance review site that I first encountered a review on The Apothecary Rose. Frankly, if it hadn't been for the romantic element, I might not have read it. I felt the interaction between Owen Archer and Lucie made the story more interesting, but there is very little romance, per se, compared to what you would find in a romance novel where a lot of emphasis is placed on a physical relationship.
There is a mystery, but not centered on who-done-it because that's pretty easy to figure out. The mystery revolves around the "why", which to me can be just as enjoyable as guessing the "who". The medieval time period was fasinating to read about and also enlightening. Some of the characters like Magda Digby, Archdeacon Anselm, and Nicolas Wilton were unforgettable. Where some would look as if they were unfit for society and without wisdom, and others whose chosen field of service showcases their piety, readers will immerse themselves in the good and evil of these characters. Choices, during this period, was not so much based on moral decisions, but what was more expedient or best for the King and/or the Church.
Thus said, Owen Archer is someone you don't want to miss. The next one in the series is The Lady Chapel. I hope it will be just as titillating.

Apothecary Rose a winner.......2003-11-16
I didn't expect such bold writing and characterisation in the medieval genre, and greatly enjoyed the book. I ended up engaged in what happens to the central characters, and very interested in where they might go next.
Good read!.......2003-08-01
I don't know what the editorial reviews are for, but it's not this book. The Apothecary Rose is set in the latter half of the fourteenth century in England, and is the first of the Owen Archer mysteries. Following two mysterious deaths at an abbey, Owen Archer is sent to investigate by the Archbishop of York. There's also an interesting touch of romance between Owen Archer and Lucie Wilton, which only added to the book. I definitely recommend reading it!

a fun, light read.......2000-09-02
The story follows the adventures of hearthwitch, Maggie Brown, and minstrel, Colin Songsmith, as they try to rescue Maggie's stepsister from gypsies. This book is actually two stories in one and it's light, fun reading. Don't confuse light with short, however, because the book is over 500 pages long. Due to underdevelopment of the characters and plot, the end of the book can sometimes seem a long ways away. The writing is oftentimes choppy and the conflicts don't seem to be completely defined before they are resolved. Still, if you don't want to think too much, just want something to help you get away, and need a good dose of unicorns and other mystical creatures, this is a good choice with enough humor to make you laugh out-loud occasionally.

Hilarious and riveting adventures........1999-08-04
Elizabeth Scarborough is one of my favorite authors, and Bronwyn's Bane and the other books in the Seashell series are especially good. The non-stop adventure will have your hands glued to the paper, and Scarborough's wonderful humor will make you wish it'd last forever. The story starts when the Crown Princess Bronwyn is cursed at birth to never speak anything but lies. She sets off with her whistling cousin and an animal-friendly gypsy to reverse the curse. On the way she meets mermaids, battles worms and beasts, and crosses the desert in seven-league boots. Scarboroughs fantasy world is delightful and unlike any other. I will read anything that she writes.
Book Description
Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer in the U.S., with over 170,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Despite this, it receives little attention from the media and little sympathy from the public. Those with lung cancer suffer more blame and stigma than other cancer patients, even though 50 percent of them are former smokers or have never smoked. Treatments for lung cancer can significantly impact quality of life, and the prognosis for some types and stages of lung cancer, using standard treatments, can be daunting. In straightforward language, Lung Cancer: Making Sense of Diagnosis, Treatment & Options addresses medical, emotional, and support needs, often in the words of patients and families themselves. Topics include:
- Diagnosis and medical tests
- Characteristics of the lung cancers, factors in prognosis, and the various subtypes and staging systems for the disease
- Treatments, including standard treatments for the subtypes, as well as emerging research and promising treatments now in clinical trials
- Side effects and long-term effects of treatment, including how to cope and how to improve quality of life
- Emotional responses to diagnosis, treatment, remission, possible recurrence, and other aspects of dealing with the condition, including stories from dozens of families living with lung cancer
- Getting support from family, friends, employers, and the broader community
- Comprehensive list of lung cancer resources: organizations, print, online sites
- Other resources, including a pull-out Cancer Survivor's Treatment Record, glossary, bibliography, and technical appendices
Author and patient advocate Lorraine Johnston, with her background in life sciences, emphasizes using knowledge to dispel fear. The content has been reviewed by top medical experts and physicians in the field. Those who read this book will encounter medical facts simply explained, advice to ease their daily life, and tools to be strong advocates for themselves or a family member.

Answers Almost Every Conceivable Question.......2005-04-06
A great book for the layperson. It answers almost every question of the patient and his/her family. The information is clear, practical, informative and concise. You will be prepared to face the challenges, choices, insurance issues, treatment options and pain management questions that all come with lung cancer. Family support is vital and this book will give the family information that is needed to help the family be supportive of the patient.
Also useful if you live in Europe.......2002-06-14
You read a lot of books, when you have a relative with lung cancer. This book gives you an overview of the most common options you have, without the depressing statistics about lung cancer. If you fight for your health, statistics aren't that important after all.
However, there are a lot of pages about coping with cancer 'socially', which may be important to some people, but that is information I was not really looking for. And the health system in de USA is a different from the system in Europe (dealing with doctors, insurance, that kind of things).
But it is by far the best introduction book about lung cancer I have been reading so far. I keep using it over and over again. So: recommended, also if you live in Europe.
By far the best and most comprehensive book on lung cancer.......2001-10-26
My wife recently got diagnosed with lung cancer. What then followed, among many other things, was a frantic, intense search for information and enlightenment. This book is by far the best, most comprehensive and enlightening book on the matter. You are far better prepared to face the challenges, choices and complexities of lung cancer treatment with this book by your side. Our deep gratitude to the author for producing this book.
Best book written on lung cancer!!.......2001-10-01
My husband was diagnosed with lung cancer more than 4 years ago, and I honestly do not know how I made it for almost 4 years without this book. It answers almost every conceivable question a person might have about lung cancer, and is the most comprehensive book on lung cancer, written in laymen's terms and very easy to read and understand, that I have ever found. I highly recommend it to anyone who has been diagnosed, or has a loved one who has been diagnosed with lung cancer.
The Patient's Book about Lung Cancer.......2001-05-27
This is the book that patients and families really need to allow them to deal with Lung Cancer. Clear, practical, concise, and informative; you'll find useable information about everything you ever wanted to know about this disease .
Meticulous medical information about symptoms, treatments, and what to expect are provided in clear language that patients can understand. Patient stories flow through the book to bring the human side of this disease. Coping strategies are here, and so is empowering information about insurance, decision making, and end of life issues.
As a cancer patient advocate, I strongly recommend this book for patients, caregivers, and professionals.

This is not a cookbook that will collect dust on a shelf!.......2004-02-10
This book is as pleasing to the eye as it is to the stomach. Beneath the pages of beautiful art, this cookbook has innovative, delicious and health conscious recipes. The Potato green chili soup has the perfect amount of spice creating rich and zesty soup that will revitalize any cold winters day. I could make comments on each and every soup, salad, bread and spread recipe in the book but you really have to try it. This cookbook is filled with luscious recipes appropriate for guests, your family or just yourself. It is great for the most novices of chefs all the way up to the experts. It is practical in that you can actually find the ingredients and it doesn't hours of preparation to make a scrumptious out of the ordinary meal. The work has really been done for you. Ladle, Leaf and Loaf is true science that compiles ingredients in the most interesting ways to create delicious meals perfect for any season.
Bell Tones of Taste!.......2002-12-09
This is an amazing book -- recipes! writing! Art! If you understand the idea & experience of "Bell Tones" in music, you will know what I mean when I say that these recipes deliver the Bell Tones of taste! Still my best gift "offering" to friends, new and old, who have not seen it yet!
Not just another cookbook.......2000-10-31
This is not just another cookbook. Not only are the recipes divine, but the author's own illustrations are charming and sophisticated.
The Lemon Quick Bread recipe is worth the price of the bookÐ- Light, chewy and delicious, with a zingy lemon flavor coming from both lemon rind, and fresh lemon juice. With sweet pecans and non-fat buttermilk, this recipe was inspired by the angel of Flavor and Texture who also cares about your health! It is low-fat, low-sugar!
For anyone who really loves good food, and wants a sure thing, don't miss this one.
Simple Pleasures.......2000-10-19
A nice little surprise. You can find the ingredients and when you sit to table, as we say in our house, it tastes better than you expected. Her salads are just new and different enough to widen your pallet--well, mine anyway--with combinations both unsuspected and attainable. Where have you been canola oil and how come no one uses you? You're great!
The soups and breads are within range of my patience and understanding of food chemistry. And from the way they turn out, you know you've done right (always a nagging question with my cooking!).
My only, and very minor, quibble are the breathless chapter intros. Found that not reading them made me like her, and the food she led me to, a little more. Guess the paper cuts are nice too, but they're inedible.
More than worth the candle.

North Korean stamps are listed for the first time in Volume 4 of the 2004 Scott Catalogue. Appearing for the first time are 1,289 major listings for Korean Democratic Peoples Republic stamps and hundreds of varieties, from the countrys first issue in 1946 to its first issue of 1975. Later issues from North Korea will be added to the 2005 edition the catalogue. Value activity is spread fairly evenly throughout the catalogue with more than 9,000 value changes recorded.

Stamp Catalogue.......2007-07-19
It was very informative. I like the color photographs and the descriptions of the stamps. It make it easy to identify the country and stamps.
Product Description
Values continue to trend upward in Volume 4, which covers countries of the world J-O. 10,000 value changes were recorded in British Commonwealth countries, while 24,000 changes were spread among non-British countries. New Zealand, Malaya and Mauritius are several of the British Commonwealth countries where particularly high numbers of value changes have been recorded. Value changes for non-British-area stamps are spread across a large number of countries. Among the most noteworthy is Monaco where 3,700 changes have been recorded. More than 2,500 value changes have been made in Mexico.
Customer Reviews:
Decent General Catalog.......2006-06-30
As standard catalogs go, the Scott series is fine for most people. There are still some questionable decisions on the numbering system, but that has always been true with Scott. And I still can't fully accept their decision to list "semi-postal" issues in a seperate section. Also, don't expect to find detailed listings of varieties. Anyone who is interested in a specific country (or topic) will already know to look for one of the specialised catalogs covering that area. A major improvement is the addition of color images throughout the series. This makes identification easier if the stamp is illustrated, but given the flood of issues over the past few decades, chances are that you'll still have to look to the design descriptions to track things down.
Book Description
Almost 37,000 value changes were recorded in Volume 4. Stamps of the British Commonwealth are responsible for almost 14,000 value changes, followed by Japan, Monaco, New Caledonia, the Middle East and Latin America.

Scotts at Amazon vs. Linn's.......2000-08-01
We can always rely on the editors at Scott to provide the best in indexing stamps in their catalogue Volumes, even though we may not always agree with their catalogue values. However, for newer Volumes, consider the classifieds in the back of Linn's, where you can pick up a newer and/or a current Volume for what you would have to pay here for one that is a few years old.
Book Description
Almost a third of the countries listed in Volume 4 have at least 100 or more value changes recorded. Volume 4 contains listings for countries of the world J - O. In New Zealand, more than 653 value changes were recorded, followed closely by Luxembourg with more than 500 value changes and Monaco with almost 500 value changes.

Book Description
The Ashmolean possesses one of the great international collections of drawings: a conspectus of European drawing at its most distinguished and varied. This catalogue includes works by artists working in Italy, Spain, and Northern Europe, from the time of the Renaissance to the end of the eighteenth century. There are five drawings by Michelangelo, and five by Raphael, including his youthful self-portrait. Leonardo is represented by two small drawings of unicorns, and there are major studies by Perugino, Carpaccio, and Titian. An imposing group by Baroque artists is followed by fine examples of the work of Tiepolo, Canaletto, Guardi, Piazzetta, and Piranesi. From north of the Alps there are drawings by Rubens, Rembrandt, and Durer, and probably the finest study ever made by Grunewald. The art of France is represented by Claude Lorrain, Watteau, Fragonard, and Ingres, and that of Britain by Holbein, Lely, Gainsborough, John Robert Cozens, and Rowlandson.
