To Your Scattered Bodies Go is the Hugo Award-winning beginning to the story of Riverworld, Philip José Farmer's unequaled tale about life after death. When famous adventurer Sir Richard Francis Burton dies, the last thing he expects to do is awaken naked on a foreign planet along the shores of a seemingly endless river. But that's where Burton and billions of other humans (plus a few nonhumans) find themselves as the epic Riverworld saga begins. It seems that all of Earthly humanity has been resurrected on the planet, each with an indestructible container that provides three meals a day, cigarettes, alcoholic beverages, a lighter, and the odd tube of lipstick. But why? And by whom?
That's what Burton and a handful of fellow adventurers are determined to discover as they construct a boat and set out in search of the river's source, thought to be millions of miles away. Although there are many hardships during the journey--including an encounter with the infamous Hermann Goring--Burton's resolve to complete his quest is strengthened by a visit from the Mysterious Stranger, a being who claims to be a renegade within the very group that created the Riverworld. The stranger tells Burton that he must make it to the river's headwaters, along with a dozen others the Stranger has selected, to help stop an evil experiment at the end of which humanity will simply be allowed to die. --Craig E. Engler
Book Description
All those who ever lived on Earth have found themselves resurrected--healthy, young, and naked as newborns--on the grassy banks of a mighty river, in a world unknown. Miraculously provided with food, but with no clues to the meaning of their strange new afterlife, billions of people from every period of Earth's history--and prehistory--must start again.
Sir Francis Bacon would be the first to glimpse the incredible way-station, a link between worlds. This forbidden sight would spur the renowned 19th-century explorer to uncover the truth. Along with a remarkable group of compatriots, including Alice Liddell Hargreaves (the Victorian girl who was the inspiration for Alice in Wonderland), an English-speaking Neanderthal, a WWII Holocaust survivor, and a wise extraterrestrial, Burton sets sail on the magnificent river. His mission: to confront humankind's mysterious benefactors, and learn the true purpose--innocent or evil--of the Riverworld . . .

Starts Off Strong, but Heads Downhill.......2007-05-28
I wanted to take a minute to write a quick review of the whole Riverworld Saga, which begins with To Your Scattered Bodies Go. I picked up the book because the concept sounded interesting, and it is. Every single person ever born on Earth is resurrected, naked, on the banks of an enormous winding river. Humanities' basic needs for food and shelter are met. The concept is rife with potential, and the author brings back many of history's most famous and infamous characters in his novels. As the novels go on, however, the writing becomes increasingly sloppy. Characters soliloquize about Sufi philosophy, new age metaphysics, and even Scientology. Sorry, but if I was interested in that, I'd pick up Dianetics. Readers drawn in by the first book's adventure and interesting premise may be disappointed. I was. The story drags on, and the author introduces characters, writes extensively about them, and then just drops them, never to be seen again. Even worse is that Farmer, the author, seems to draw his story out by improbable or unlikely circumstances. Characters go insane spontaneously, and cause trouble for the rest of the group; that's one whole book. The Riverworld Saga is a great concept, but the execution was only fair. I can't recommend it unless you're interested in new age philosophy and don't mind a drawn out story with inexplicably disappearing main characters.
I'm a Farmer fan now!.......2007-05-07
I have never read a lot of science fiction, nor have I read anything by Farmer, but I'm certainly a fan now! What a fantastic, fun, adventure! I could not put this book down. Farmer is a skillful writer who crafts a wonderfully written, often philosophical, journey into another world. He makes the reader genuinely consider what life after death might be like. A classic read.
A Classic Fantasy Series--Not to be missed!.......2007-05-05
I was lost in the adventures of Sir. Richard Burton on the ten-million-mile river of "Riverworld," where everyone who has ever lived wakes up from death. This is not a heaven, though! There is wild sex, and also the possibility of dying again. Mark Twain has Alice-in-Wonderland as his lover! The characters from real history build a riverboat and head up the river. Toward the end, they go flying around on comfortable overstuffed chairs. Great fun!
The Best of the Series.......2006-07-14
The last time I re-read this book was over thiry years ago and the scenes are still vivid in my memory. I was 16 and up until then, the science fiction I read was pretty tame stuff. Although it was beginning to change, most of the material out there at the time minced around or completly avoided subjects such as sex, religion, race, and the possibility that we live in a bizarre and hostile universe. Of course, there was a lot in the book that would appeal to a 16-year old boy. In the first chapter, two Victorians take LSD-laced chewing gum and spend the night coupling like mink. A Neanderthal commits the faux pas of cannibalism and public farting. A Cockney prostitute beats up on a pius philanthropist for throwing cigarettes in the River. And this is Heaven! I was hooked.
After that, I read everything by Phillip Jose Farmer I could find. If you had the misfortune of seeing the awful adaptation of "Riverworld," on the SciFi channel, you really should read this book and the "Fabulous Riverboat" to see how the movie should have been done.I
A classic.......2006-06-12
To Your Scattered Bodies Go is a classic sci fi novel by one of the giants of the genre. Storywise this isn't the most interesting one in the series but it suffers a bit less from Farmers soliloquies and philosophizing. The premise is one of the most inventive in scifi, right up there with Ringworld. Someone, or some thing, has simultaneously ressurected every human who ever lived on an alien planet which has been terraformed into one long continuous river. With their material needs provided by mysterious machines and unable to grow old or permanently die humanity is left to figure out what is going on. To Your Scattered Bodies Go starts on the first day of ressurection, or rather slightly before it, and focuses mainly on the Victorian explorer Richard Francis Burton. Burton quickly hooks up with some other resurectees including a cave man, the woman who Alice in Wonderland was based on, a washed up scifi writer who bears a passing resemblance to Farmer himself, and an alien who may have inadvertently destroyed the Earth. The motivation in the story is a bit thin. There is a Mysterious Stranger who seems to know what is going on and urges Burton to explore, but the story itself mostly deals with Burton travelling along the river and getting into trouble, first with his friends and then on his own. Along the way he encounters a bunch of different people from different times, including Hermann Goering, prehistoric giants, and religious fanatics.

A Second Chance For Everybody!.......2007-09-04
Philip José Farmer is a groundbreaking writer that in the '50s & '60s starts turmoil in the scene of Sci-fi. Up to that time the genre was almost aseptic, romance: yes, sex: no.
PJF launched his short story "The Lovers" (1952) and started a change; "Flesh" (1960) and "Riders of the Purple Wage" (1967) are interesting examples amongst other of the same kind. The other unconventional thematic he approached is: "What happens after death", good example of this was his dark novel "Inside/Outside" (1964) and an excellent short story as "A Bowl Bigger than Earth" (1967).
"To Your Scattered Bodies Go" pertains to this last group. Humankind as whole is resurrected, except those who had died in childhood. Along both coast of an immense river, 15,000 miles long, they are scattered in groups composed 90% from an age and place and a 10% from elsewhere and elsewhen. They are all given a 20's year old body but with full memory of their past lives.
Sir Richard Francis Burton, an Englishman, mid 19th Century explorer and adventurer, is the central character of the novel. He is described unadorned, as a ruthless egotistic person, yet full of charisma and an energetic drive. He put himself to the task of discovering what's going on. Along his stride he meets other famous and infamous historical characters such as Hermann Goring, Alice Liddell (the little girl that inspired Alice Wonderland to his author), Mark Twain and John Lackland. He also encounters fictional people as a Neanderthal and an alien from outer space.
On this background an interesting and captivating novel is developed. Unfortunately this is the first installment of Riverworld series and as volumes passes by, the quality dwindles as well as the interest in the story.
Nevertheless this book and the next one are great and deserve to be read.

Book Description
Michael Schiefelbein, after spending ten years studying for the priesthood, graduated from the University of Maryland with a doctorate in English. He is a professor of writing and literature in Memphis, TN.
An interview with Michael Schiefelbein author of Vampire Vow
"I wanted Jesus. That's how it started. Yes, the Jesus they built a religion on, the one they say rose from the dead."
With this opening sentence, it becomes immediately clear that this is not a typical novel, and by the time you have raced through the remaining 213 blood-soaked, terrifying pages, it is clear that Vampire Vow is not a typical vampire novel either.
Victor Decimus is perhaps the most horrifyingly amoral creature of the night ever created, and yet in Michael Schiefelbein's skilled hands he is almost as attractive as he is repellent. Combining sex, religion, and blood lust is a tricky business and not for the faint of heart, but as we discovered from our conversation with Vampire Vow author Michael Schiefelbein, he knows whereof he speaks:
Alyson: Your novel violates quite a few taboos-the sex-religion combination, the subject of Jesus' sexuality, vampires and Jesus-I mean, you have a man falling in love with Jesus and becoming a vampire to spite him. Are you nervous about reactions?
Michael Schiefelbein: Like crosses burning on my lawn? The thought has crossed my mind, especially here in the Bible Belt. But I strongly believe in a real, human Jesus who might have been gay. Who knows? And to me, the ultimate tribute you can pay someone is to desire him, body and soul. In terms of sex in the novel, it's appropriate. Victor, the protagonist, is a ruthless, passionate Roman guard who uses sex to assert his power. He's not admirable for that, but his fury with depictions of Jesus as otherworldly and asexual is justified. Victor certainly exploits the Church by posing as a monk and pretending to play according to the monastery's rules. But he also brings some flesh and blood-no pun intended-into spirituality.
Alyson: So the idea of Jesus as a lover isn't blasphemous to you?
MS: Some of the great Christian mystics saw him that way-St. John of the C

Enticing & Intiguing.......2007-08-10
This was a well written book into the life of a gay vampire. You follow the life of Viktor, a former Roman Officer who tries to find that special someone to share his life with and allow him to move on to a greater world. This book has love, rage, vengence. You cheer at Viktor while at the same time are horrified by some of the atrocities that he commits as his declares war with the Christian church.
Blaspemous, Circumlocutory and Just Plain Boring.......2007-03-31
As a reasonably devout gay Catholic (and a Ph.D. in English and American Literature), I found this novel an appalling combination of blasphemy, bad taste (not everyone is Christian, I realize) and oh-so-confused writing. The author doesn't seem to know where he's going -- or if he does -- he keeps it a big secret from the average reader. Without seeming immodest, I'm far from the average reader. I'm a university English professor and a published writer myself -- and I found this book confusing and it's story line uneven. It also is replete with unncessary details. My partner is a Calvin Klein model. If I want a description of the sexual activity of attractive gay men, I only have to think back a night or two. Adults are familiar with the mechanics of gay sex -- and this author makes gay sex seem solely lust-driven. He obviously has unresolved issues with the Chruch that he's taking out on his poor readers. I made the mistake of buying one of his books. That won't happen again. Incidentally, Alyson publications isn't exactly known for publishing great works of literature.
A Guilty Pleasure!.......2007-01-27
Okay, the writing is so mediocre it's practically journalism, but the story is something of a page-turner.
That officially stated, let me make a few historical notes nobody else has gotten around to. First, Jesus of Nazareth would almost certainly not have known Latin. Greek was the lingua franca of the empire, and most scholars doubt Jesus would have been functional even in that. If Victor and Jesus would ever have spoken directly, it would have been in either Greek or Aramaic (assuming Victor would have bothered to learn some Aramaic for his new job, which is questionable). Second, there was no gymnasium in Jerusalem during Jesus' time--that was briefly during the Maccabees. If by "gymnasium" Schiefelbein has in mind a private training ground for the soldiers, that would be fine, but it should have been called such. Third, while the Greeks exercised nude in the gymnasium, the Romans did not. Fourth, I object to the use of the term Essenes, though most scholars seem all too willing to apply Josephus' term to the people who wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls. I would claim Josephus uses the term broadly and generally, like "zealot," rather than in any specific sense. That is, I don't think people went around calling themselves "essenes." And I would be shocked to find Victor well-read in Josephus! Well, you get the idea. Fortunately, the ancient part of the story was mercifully brief for this history buff.
the vampire genre, reinvented.......2006-05-17
Just finished reading this book, in one sitting. It is amazing, and only gets 4,5 stars, because I read Blood Brothers earlier this week, and I liked that story better, but only by a little.
The main character, Victor, is horrifying. He is a vampire, who draws blood in ways I have never seen described (then again I do not read pure horror vampire stories). But then he has this... can I call it vulnerability?
It is why I kept reading, the fact that, even in his darkness, he did love. Love ultimately drove him to darkness. By the end of the book I wanted him to succeed in his mission of finding someone to take his place. Then again, I am a hopeless romantic sometimes :)
I am glad I already ordered Vampire Thrall, and know the sequel, Vampire Transgression, is just out. I have the feeling that even after that moment, I will not be sick of Victor yet, because he is _that_ good a character.
nooooo............2006-02-10
while I, like most others, liked the twist... I could not even finish this book... nooooooo..... the story line bordered on creepy... just my opinion... if you like teenage/adult sex then this is the book for you.. for me nooooo...

I trained in this program and it helped tremendously.......2003-12-23
This book started the Self-Management approach to chronic illness. I trained in the Self-Management program and have led groups for years, and have seen people make wonderful changes. This experience and knowledge inspired me to write my book, The Art of Getting Well.
Drs Lorig, Holman, Sobel and the other authors lay out all you need to know to develop your programs of exercise, relaxation, emotional support, and healthy eating. They also teach how to deal successfully with medical systems and treatments.
The book stresses living the best possible life, not just following medical orders or watching everything you eat. It's an excellent complement to my book, which will provide some inspiration to attempt the behavior changes that "Living a Healthy Life" explains so well.
Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions..........2003-12-12
This book does an excellent job of presenting how chronic illness patients are overwhelmed and how they can aggressively
confront the debilitating cycle and successfully manage the lifestyles they must lead. Everyone with a chronic illness is forced to live differently than all others, no matter their age.
The book analyzes and describes the depleting cycle that anyone with a chronic, dibilitating illness encounters, and offers proven solutions on how to break the debilitating cycle and progress outward inspite of the illness.
Good resource for seniors.......2000-07-01
This book, written in a very simple, "self-help" style, seems to be geared to the senior citizen suffering from chronic illness and emphasizes developing and implementing management plans for exercise, diet, and medical care. While much of it is common sense, it does offer bulleted, structured outlines for communicating with medical professionals, managing medicines, planning for the future (and possibly greater physical degeneration), and most of all acknowledges the feelings and depression that often accompany chronic illness.

If I could only own one book...........2006-07-16
this is it. I swear by it. It has some AMAZING recipies, and so many different ones, there is something for everyone. As a matter of fact, when I have guests over for pig roasts or full BBQ's I don't show my guests this book of all the 8 BBQ books I own for one reason... I won't give away my best cooking secrets!
Get Saucy!.......2005-07-26
This is a great book properly titled...it is the ultimate book on every sauce bbq! The recipes are varied from all over the USA which I found fascinating. Different parts of the country like different (very different) bbq. I appreciated the author's contribution to defining the differences between sops, mops, rubs, and sauces as well as to why regional preferences exist. Yet, with all this wonderful information and great recipes, it's not a hard read at all. Most of the recipes can be made by just about anyone. It's a favorite of mine.
Forget This.......2001-07-12
In spite of its name, there is nothing "ultimate" about this small, hard-back book. It is a marginal collection of (by my count) 106 recipes. The main problem is its copyright date: 1995. Most of the recipes are trendy ones that were hot properties during the cookbook heydays of the early nineties. The authors explicitly admit this with words such as "creative" and "frou-frou". This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it does mean that this book is now obsolete.
Here is how the recipe count breaks down: 19 old fashioned, american sauces, 19 fruit based sauces, 17 odd-ball sauces, 18 international sauces, 16 sauces for stuff besides beef and pork, and 17 rubs.
Here you can find some of the worst recipes I have ever seen in print (I will spare you the gory details). At the end there is a short section that lists 50 bottled sauces that the authors have supposedly sampled. The comments are too brief, long on cute phrases and short on solid opinions.
This volume suffers from graphics that are way too "frou-frou", and anecdotes that are even worse. I do not fault the lack of pictures, but it does seem as if more money went into the binding and the nice dust jacket than in the visual presentation of the pages.
The nicest thing I can think of to say is that it might make a good gift for someone who might be interested in good "Q".
Excellent Resource for grilling.......2000-05-15
I've had the book for over 4 years and absolutely LOVE it. I think I've tried about every sauce and rub in the book and would be hard pressed to say that there is one that I DONT like. The little expose' about each of the sauces and rubs is great as well.
Customer Reviews:
Somewhat misleading title...........2004-10-30
This is an OK book, but the title is somewhat misleading to the casual reader. This book deals very specificly with the "Directional Designs" line produced by Paul McCobb - not all of Paul McCobb's "Fifties Furniture"
If you are looking for information on the Paul McCobb Planner Group, as I was, you are not going to find it in this book.
Apart from that, it has some great pictures of some very high-end furniture.

Book Description
Born Ruby Rebecca Blevins in a log cabin nestled among the Arkansas Ozarks in 1908, Patsy Montana began her musical career performing in the 1920s with the California-based Montana Cowgirls trio. She went solo and in 1936 became the first female country and western singer to sell one million records with her self-penned "I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart." Her career spanned eight decades, and in 1996 (also the year of her death) she was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Here is the story of a tiny, blue-eyed woman who had a pioneering spirit and a big voice. Patsy Montana describes in her own words and in vivid detail her life, career, and success at a time in music history when women did not cut gold records, gold records were not even given, and Billboard did not even have a chart for western music.

Country Music Memories.......2002-04-04
I enjoyed the descriptions of all the shows and appearances of Patsy Montana, but also a private look at the person, herself. There is a lot of history about country music and the effort put into it by Patsy Montana in keeping this type of music alive and going well. Many of her subjects bring back memories to me of when I was young and my parents had the radio on, especailly listening to the WLS Chicago National Barndance. Patsy knew so many of the stars of this radio era and shared lots of stories about them in this book. One doesn't realize all the thousands of miles that stars travel to entertain and especially back in the time when artists did not fly from one event to another. Many times it was an automobile and perhaps not a new one, at that, which carried them to shows. It makes me very happy to know her work is being carried into the new century by the next generation of country and western music artists. Ther are dozens and dozens of artists mentioned in the book, from Tom Mix and Hoot Gibson to LeAnn Rimes, the Dixie Chicks and all the wonderful entertainers through the years in between.
The Best of the West.......2002-04-03
I just got my copy, and I can't put it down! This book takes the reader from Patsy's childhood, through her amazing rise to fame with her big hit, "I Want To Be A Cowboy's Sweetheart", and beyond. It goes behind the big headlines, and brings Patsy right into the room. The personal insights about life in California at the outset of WWII are particularly interesting. By today's standards, Patsy Montana's popularity in the 1940s would be astronomical, and it's high time for her story to be put in print. I'm so thrilled about this book! It's a must-read for every western music fan!
