WHEN IRISH EYES ARE LYIN'...
Emily Andrew is earning some much-needed green by navigating the twisting roads of Ireland with a group of seniors, including her beloved Nana. But once the hearty troupe from Iowa lands on Irish sod, trouble starts brewing: there's a death-defying incident with a horse-drawn carriage . . . and a gender-bending encounter with Emily's ex-husband Jack, now known as Jackie. No wonder Emily has come down with a smarting case of hives!
The plot thickens like Irish stew when the group settles into Ballybantry Castle, where a ghost is said to wander the halls. But it's no blarney when a very real corpse turns up in one of the guest rooms. While the murderous malarkey has Emily step-dancing as fast as she can, one sure thing emerges from the mists: not even St. Paddy himself could drive out the spiteful serpent that slithers among them!

As good as the first!.......2007-01-19
Book two of the Passport to Peril series was just as good as the first, with slightly more romance involved. Throw in another quirky sidekick (a girl has to have backup!) and you have a wonderfully funny, action-packed book that will keep you reading - and guessing. Once again, at the end of this book, I was compelled to run out and get the next book in the series.
not for me -- .......2006-04-23
There seems to be no happy medium for this book and its readers. Either one loves it or doesn't like it at all. My sensibility seems to put me in that latter category. After two days of struggling with it, and just a bit more than half-way through it, I finally decided to just give up. I found the so-called humor to be very juvenile, and the plot nearly non-existent. I'm not sure why it's considered humorous to make fun of Iowans or Minnesotans (and I'm neither) or one's ex-husband having now become someone else's wife. Emily is bawdy in one sentence, and overly prudish in the next, and the characterization of Nana isn't a very fond one.
I'm always on the look-out for good writing that makes for entertaining reading, but I didn't find it here. Maybe others will.
Great Discovery!.......2006-03-01
I was searching for something good to read while waiting for my favorite authors' (Elizabeth Peters and Janet Evanovich) new books to come out, when I came across this book by Maddy Hunter. I loved it. Emily is a really fun heroine. The story and characters are great. The descriptions and dialogue of the elderly characters from Iowa are hysterical. Being from the midwest, I truly believe that the author has traveled to Europe with a group of seniors because the characters are so true and believable!
silly read.......2006-02-24
I enjoyed reading this book, a lot of silly stuff. Great if your looking for a light and fluffy read.
Wonderful! .......2005-12-23
I normally don't laugh out loud when reading books, but I seem to do it for all of Maddy Hunter's!
For this book, Emily formally serves as an escort for a group of senior citizens (including her Nana) as they embark on a tour to Ireland. Naturally, they find a few dead bodies and hilarity ensues. The sexy Etienne returns.
I read this book in three hours and refused to be interrupted. I could not put it down. Terrific!
Book Description
The Island of Fu ManchuWhen Sir. Denis Nayland Smith and Bart Kerrigan follow Fu Manchu from London to New York, they have no clue they are soon to find themselves in the Panama Canal Zone, or of the deadly encounters that await them in Haiti, the Island of Voodoo.
They must come up against the death of the snapping fingers, the talking mummy head, zombies, the green snake and much more…before they can finally meet the full force of Fu Manchu. But what macabre fate awaits them when they finally do?
This and several other short stories, including The Wrath of Fu Manchu, make up the fifth in Allison and Busby’s series of omnibus editions collecting Sax Rohmer’s tales of the insidious Fu Manchu.
Customer Reviews:
FINAL AND FUN FOOTNOTES OF FU.......2002-06-18
"The Wrath of Fu Manchu" is the 14th and final book in Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu series. I refer here to the original DAW publication of 1976, which included four short stories dealing with the good doctor, as well as some other Sax Rohmer stories not related to the series but interesting in their own right. The four Fu stories serve as mere footnotes or codas to the previous 13 novels, but all are interesting, and a must for Fu completists.
Before going on, I would like to say a thing or two about the final Fu Manchu NOVEL, "Emperor Fu Manchu," as there is nowhere else on Amazon to do so. This 13th and final Fu novel is unique in that it is the only one in the series that actually takes place in China. In this one, Nayland Smith and American agent Tony McKay try to rescue an entomologist from Fu's lair; stop the kidnapping of a German physicist; AND destroy a Russian germ warfare research station in the jungles of the Chinese wilderness. The book is kind of a half and half affair, as in the first part of the novel, all Smith and McKay seem to do is traipse back and forth around Szechuan province, from one rendezvous to another. But then the book really gets going, as our heroes penetrate Fu's lair and are shown the secret of the doctor's "Cold Men": the zombie army that Fu Manchu has resurrected from the dead. The finale of the book is actually quite suspenseful. However, the book does contain the usual Rohmeresque errors. For example, Fu's referring to the rat torture of book 2 ("The Return of Dr. Fu Manchu") as "the Seven Gates of Wisdom" instead of "the Six Gates of Wisdom"; Fu's comment that the goal of the Si-Fan is to overthrow Communism, when in previous books it was to overthrow the West in general and restore China to its former glory; the use of a peach tree as a landmark in one section of the book later turning into a pear tree(!); the ability of a character to discern another's eye color and skin color in a dark room; and so on. And howzabout this for a sentence: "...presently, she said, 'Were you angry with me for being such a liar?' she asked." Things like this can drive a reader to distraction. Sax Rohmer was a terrific writer of thrillers but, like most writers, his work needed copyediting, and I don't think it ever received such attention. His descriptions of geography throughout the entire series are problematic at best. In this book, for example, we are asked to picture a river that becomes a creek, joining up with a streamlike brook that becomes a miniature bay. Whew! Anyway, quibbles aside, this is a fun ending for the 13 Fu Manchu novels, a series that I highly recommend being read in consecutive order for maximum impact.
But to return to the final BOOK, "The Wrath of Fu Manchu": The first two stories in the book, "The Wrath of Fu Manchu" and "The Eyes of Fu Manchu," fill in the gaps between the last novels of the series. "Wrath" is certainly the best of the bunch, and features the final appearance of Fah Lo Suee, Fu's daughter. In this one, Fu threatens to contaminate the gold supply of Fort Knox (years before Auric Goldfinger hatched a similar scheme!), and Nayland Smith infiltrates a meeting of the Council of Seven to stop him. It is a pretty suspenseful tale. The high point of "Eyes" is a cameo appearance by Dr. Petrie, the narrator of the earliest Fu novels. In this story, Fu kidnaps a scientist and tries to make him work on Fu's life-prolongation experiments. It is a short but satisfying tale. The remaining two Fu stories in the book are "The Word of Fu Manchu," in which freelance journalist Malcolm Forbes (!!!) accompanies Smith as he tries to find out how a CID agent has been killed, and "The Mind of Fu Manchu," in which the good doctor steals the plans for a flying saucer. These last two stories are short shorts and are over very quickly; sadly, they are anticlimaxes to a wonderful series of books.
The other, non-Fu stories in the collection are a mixed bag, some in the supernatural vein, many tales of Egyptian adventure. In "Nightmare House," a curse from the Middle Ages afflicts a lonely estate in Cornwall. "The Leopard-Couch" tells of an ancient Egyptian curio that houses the spirit of a dead priestess. "The Mystery of the Fabulous Lamp" is a sweet little O. Henryish story of a couple that buys a lamp that changes that couple's life. "A Date at Shepheard's" treats of modern-day (i.e., 1950) Egypt and how the harem customs have persisted. "The Mark of Maat" is also a tale of modern-day (1944) Egypt, and deals with the strange vengeance that that ancient deity seems to exact on a tomb raider. "The Treasure of Taia" is a beautifully written--almost poetically written--story of the plot against a struggling archeologist, again in 20th century Egypt. "Crime Takes a Cruise" is a delightful thriller set in Port Said, in which a young American girl and an Irish secret serviceman join forces to flush out a dealer in Nazi treasures. Finally, there is the supernatural tale "A House Possessed," in which an English estate is cursed by a student of Nostradamus himself. This tale does elicit some nice shuddery moments. Many of the stories just mentioned are unsatisfying, in that mundane explanations are presented for events that the reader would probably prefer to remain unexplained or supernatural. As usual, Rohmeresque anachronisms and inconsistencies are present. For example, in "Nightmare House," events are described that supposedly took place around the time of the second Plantagenet (the early 1200s). However, harquebusses (a type of musket) are being used, and they didn't come in until around the 1400s! These harquebusses are also said to shoot arrows. Did muskets shoot arrows back then? Somehow, I doubt it! In "A House Possessed," the house is supposed to have been built before 1640, based on designs by English architect John Vanbrugh. But Vanbrugh wasn't born until 1664! Like I said, Rohmer was in critical need of a good copy editor, and, sadly, never seemed to get one. Still, the book has ample charms, and I do recommend it.
A Final Classic and Something for Completists.......2001-08-16
ISLAND OF FU MANCHU is the final classic Fu Manchu novel. It follows on directly from THE DRUMS OF FU MANCHU and mixes World War II espionage action with voodoo zombies. As happens many times in Sax Rohmer novels, the sub-plot involving the Panama Canal seems to have predicted future events. Reading a book featuring Hitler and Mussolini when both men controlled military might that could have changed the course of the world is particularly rivetting. The action is fast-paced and the dialogue is crisp. The characterizations are excellent. Fu Manchu remains the most complex literary villain ever created. Bart Kerrigan remains Rohmer's last great narrator/protagonist in the Conan Doyle fashion. Long-time readers will delight in learning more of the Ericksen Ray (which Rohmer introduced in THE GOLDEN SCORPION [1918]). Fah lo Suee, the devious daughter of Fu Manchu, returns in a new guise--Voodoo Queen Mamaloi in a sub-plot Rohmer would later borrow for VIRGIN IN FLAMES (1952). ISLAND OF FU MANCHU reads like the best INDIANA JONES adventure with a flair for the mystery genre that is second only to the immortal Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The novella THE WRATH OF FU MANCHU and the short stories read like works-in-progress. Written in the 1950's, they pick up where 1948's SHADOW OF FU MANCHU left off. Communism has destroyed Fu Manchu's idealized China. As in Rohmer's World War II-era books, Fu Manchu is desperate to remove Fascists and Communists from power as they threaten his own plans for domination. Rohmer had been writing Fu Manchu stories for over forty years by this point. These shorter works are chiefly noteworthy for the final series appearances of Fah lo Suee and Dr. Petrie.

Book Description
Almost 20 years ago, a Harvard-trained neurosurgeon and researcher named Norman Shealy was introduced to a young woman with a special gift: she could "see" illness in other people with only her intuition to guide her. After extensive testing, Dr. Shealy concluded that her ability to diagnose illness - even from remote distances - was 93% accurate. Today that "medical intuitive" - Caroline Myss - is a legend in the field of intuition and energy healing, with three New York Times bestsellers to her credit, including her current blockbuster Sacred Contracts.
Now, in a major publishing event, these two pioneering voices are together again in a revolutionary self-care curriculum, on The Science of Medical Intuition.
First presented by Myss and Shealy at a series of influential workshops, The Science of Medical Intuition is designed to help listeners take control of their total health, through intuitive self-diagnosis and healing techniques. Complete on 12 enriching sessions - over 18 hours of learning - and enhanced by a large format workbook developed exclusively for this course, The Science of Medical Intuition covers every phase of Myss' and Shealy's groundbreaking approach to self-care including: The history of medical intuition Intuition self-training Chakra-by-chakra self-diagnosis Healing with imagery Surprising scientific evidence from medicine and physics Past lives and present health Decoding archetypal information, and much more. At last, here is a full toolbox of self-diagnostic practices, visualizations, and healing insights, taught by Myss and Shealy in their own words, on The Science of Medical Intuition.

An Adventure In Discovering Self.......2005-08-12
Excellent information! Caroline and Norm lead the life student through insights into body, mind and spirit. Great tools for living life to the fullest of our potentials. I highly recommend any source of study by Caroline Myss and Norm Shealy.
An enriching and rewarding self-teaching guide.......2003-07-19
The collaborative effort of Caroline Myss and Dr. Norm Shealy, The Science Of Medical Intuition: Self-diagnosis And Healing With Your Body's Energy Systems is an impressive and "user friendly" collection of twelve 60 minute lessons on audio compact discs that guide the listener in the process of approaching self-care and improved health through developing personal intuition. Inducting the reader into learning about chakras, creative visualization, guided imagery, the power of thought, and much, much more, The Science Of Medical Intuition is an enriching and rewarding self-teaching guide to extending personal awareness into scientific and metaphysical realms alike. The Science Of Medical Intuition would make a welcome and highly prized addition to dedicated Alternative Medicine and Metaphysical Studies collections.
Absolutely Worth getting if you relate to Caroline Myss........2003-05-04
This is the most involved CD and Workbook set from Caroline that I have ever had the pleasure of owning. It is a very detailed tool box, and one that will provide hours of opportunity for self-reflection and awareness. Caroline Myss and Norman Shealy (MD) speak on the CD's. Dr Norm Shealy has some fascinating medical details concerning the visualisations contained within this series and their effect on raising the levels of Calcitonin and DHEA (as well as some other hormones) for example.
It is not a series that aims to teach you how to become a medical intuitive to read other people's energy. Rather, it aims to teach you to be more perceptive and intuitive about your own physical, mental and spiritual/energetic body.
It has some good Visualisations within it, that last ~ 30 mins each. The Ring of Fire, Earth, Air, Water and Crystal are great.
Interestingly, the Ring of Crystal Visualisation seems to go along almost the exact same points of focus in the body as I learnt through Healing Touch in a treatment known as the CHAKRA CONNECTION. This technique is acknowledged by Janet Mentgen founder of the Healing Touch program to have been learnt from the renowned Dr W.Brugh Joy (Author of "Joy's Way"). I have found the CHAKRA CONNECTION to have powerful and beneficial effects, both for people I work with and when done on myself. Although I have only done the Ring of Crystal visualisation a few times now, you can feel the points Norm Shealy focuses on to really be connecting.
I can recommend this series to those interested in energetic medicine and healing, and for those who have enjoyed previous Caroline Myss CD's. This Series can help empower everybody who chooses to use the tools given within it. For those with or without a medical background, the visualisations are clearly explained and diagrams given in the extensive 92 page workbook.
I think I will be re-listening to (as with all Caroline's CD's, because each time you listen to it you hear different gems of wisdom) and benefiting from this series on The Science of Medical Intuition for many years to come.

where does he get this stuff?.......2005-01-17
the information imparted in the text is questionable, and the directives are sloppy. it is neither a guide for housewives nor resource for professionals. a disappointment.
very informative book for an advanced cook.......1999-08-29
we found this book to be very instructive towards developing a buffet for a large amount of people. It is a book geared towards professional chefs. a majority of the recipes are the basics required to create a standard buffet. the more advanced chef will use these as a guide for more inventive dishes.
At least its a start.......1997-09-06
Finally a book that tries to educate American cooks about the fabulous art of french garde manger cooking. Alas, it is best used by those who have advanced cooking skills as it presents ideas, more than formal instruction. Many of these dishes are difficult, and there are no directions, illustrations or tips on how to give these dishes the finished look they deserve

Misleading...........2006-07-11
I ordered this book, hoping to get the pattern for the Prairie Pines quilt (featured on the cover). Boy you can imagine how disappointed I was to find this pattern NOT included in the book. Instead the book seems to be devoted to home decorating tips, a few lackluster recipes, and a few small wall quilts.
While I will probably make a few of the wall quilts included, I'm disappointed that I will have to buy another book to get the pattern I want. This book is fine, but misleading... I was hoping to get started on my holiday quilting. Now I will have to wait until next month to buy the book with the right pattern.
Disappointed.......2003-12-16
I'm an avid quilter and love many of the quilts offered by Lynette Jensen. I had seen her on TV and she displayed the very quilt on the cover of the book. I ordered the book for the pattern and was very dismayed when I got the book that it didn't contain the pattern. I'm very disappointed that many of the items featured in her book didn't have patterns to go with them. In the back of the book what how to order them making me feel as if I purchased a catalog more than anything. The craft projects she did feature I found most to be generic.
The book is decent for decorating and a few craft ideas but don't buy the book thinking you can making everything in it without buying more books or patterns.
Imitation is the greatest form of flattery!.......2001-01-22
I received this book from one of my sisters for an early birthday gift and enjoyed it greatly! Lynette is a very talented artist and decorator! Next Christmas, along with a friend, I will be decorating a kitchen of an 1840's home and we plan on "borrowing" several of Lynette's ideas. We especially liked the arrangement of the bowls and thought it would be a clever idea for the pantry. Thanks for the primer.
A BOOK THAT QUILTERS AND NON-QUILTERS WOULD ENJOY.......2000-10-31
LYNETTE JENSEN'S BOOKS ARE A REAL JOY. SHE HAS A WAY WITH FABRIC AND DESIGN AND DISPLAY, THAT WHEN YOU OPEN HER BOOKS, YOU CAN'T WAIT TO GET STARTED ON ONE OF HER QUILT PATTERNS, PILLOWS, OR WALL HANGINGS. THE INSTRUCTIONS ARE EASY TO FOLLOW AND EVEN IF YOUR A NOVICE QUILTER YOU CAN SEW HER PATTERNS. I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK AND PICKED UP SOME OTHER GREAT DECORATING IDEAS AS WELL AS WONDERFUL QUILT PATTERNS. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, MRS. JENSEN.

Book Description
John Ruskin (1819-1900) was considered the greatest critic of art, culture, and society of the nineteenth century. Throughout his life, from his undergraduate days in the 1830s to his service asthe University's first Slade professor of Art in the 1870s and 1880s, Oxford profoundly influenced the course of his career. He proved a controversial Professor, and when he broke with the University, an angry and disappointed man, even his closest friends must have been relieved to see him go. Yet in the hundred years since then, the value of his contribution has come to be better appreciated. This lavishly illustrated study, based on an exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum explains Ruskin's true intentions in founding the Ruskin School of Drawing at Oxford, and describes his lifelong commitment to the art of drawing, and to its value as an educational tool. The story is told through Ruskin's own drawings, and the work of those he chose to help him in a project that was central to his social and critical beliefs.

Customer Reviews:
The Partially True Story.......2007-08-17
Those looking for an intensive, in-depth analysis of his Music are in for a disappointment. This book is about the Life and Times of a musical legend, not his songs, or his accomplishments! The man was not a God and people need to get over that fact. If you're looking for a hero-worshipping book, don't buy this one.
Great Book.......2002-02-18
I picked this book of just to have something to read and it floored me. The book gives you ALL of Elvis's life and not just the sanitized versiion. I would highly recommend it to anyone seeking the TRUTH about Elvis. From his greatest moments to his lowest.
Routine.......2001-09-25
If Peter Guralnick's mammoth two volume biography didn't exist, this book might serve more of a purpose. But compared to the Guralnick books this is downright flimsy. There is excruciatingly little new here though there are a few early anecdotes and some interesting interviews with marginal players in the Presley story like co-stars Deborah Walley and Mary Ann Mobley who don't get interviewed in connection with Presley very often. There is also extensive interview time spent with the infamous Dr. Nick. Otherwise the book seems like a collection od press clippings that have been trotted out dozens of times before. To make things worse, it seems that in the photo sections the authors deliberately went out of their way to find the most familiar pictures available.
You would think that there wouldn't be anything new to write about Elvis but the Guralnick books were filled with revelations. He didn't stop at the familiar and wound up turning up dozens of forgotten gems just from information that had been in the public domain but had never been gathered in a contemporary work about the king.
This book has other problems besides familiarity. Elvis' music gets glossed over. For example Elvis' 1969 memphis sessions, that produced From Elvis in Memphis and "Suspicious Minds" perhaps the artistic height of his career, get a page and a half. While the authors have an appreciation for Presley's achievement they don't always appear to have the greatest understanding of it. Reading authors like Guralnick, Dave Marsh, Greil Marcus and even Ernst Jorgenson you can feel and hear the music as you read. In their descriptions the music sets off a universe of ideas. That's not the case here. There is a discography, a filmography and a list of Elvis' TV appearances in the back but these have been done better (sometimes in entire books)many times before. In fact, the discography, because of its arbitrary selections and factual errors, is useless.
So, unless you have to read every single word that has ever been written about Elvis you can miss this one.
Well researched but not the best.......2001-08-15
A lot of work went into this book, but it lacks objectivity. It is pro-Elvis, though not excessively so, but it seems entirely too kind to Dr. Nick and Priscilla.
Dr. Nick no doubt curbed Elvis's overall drug consumption and minimized the careless peaks that would have occurred had he not been present. However, Dr. Nick was still party to the drug excess. It is difficult not to believe that his interest was primarily money at the expense of caring for Elvis. Despite receiving a hefty income, he found it necessary to borrow $200,000 from his very volatile patient. And then there was the racquetball misadventure resulting in legal estrangement. Still, I received a better appreciation for Dr. Nick's effort by reading this book. He did have a daunting task.
As regards Priscilla, the authors seem to have bought the image she has been trying to project. Finstadt's book on Priscilla presents a more plausible picture.

Bad taste as most of the poor writers against the man and his huge musical talents. No matter how much they try to trash him he will be the One and Only forever. I wasn't a fan of Elvis before the 1997. Yeah, twenty years after his death! Then I started getting interested on him. Watched all his movies, read all or most of his books, and he captured, not only my heart, but my mind too! What a phenomenum! Incredible!
