A "must" read........1999-11-01

There are certain artefacts that draw one in life - there are certain records/albums/cd's one might feel - without which a collection is incomplete. As with books, a dictionary, Shakespeare, Roget's Thesaurus and Trevanian's books are on my shelf. I only wish RW and I could have met. If perchance you read this -or know the author- tell him Thank You.[Have an Islay Malt on me!] A wonderful book. I also highly recommend Summer of Katya and the other 3 known books by Trevanian.

An excellent book that changed my whole life!!!.......1999-10-11

My life has been devided into two parts: before and after reading the 'Shibumi'. It gave me the concept of 'overwhelming calmness' to which the development of any person must be directed. However, the 'overwhelming calmness' is not the the aim in itself, but one of the most important stages on the way of the endless development-the only worthy thing in the world.

Extremely good.......2007-08-01

The charachters and dialogue in all of Travanians books are what make them masterpieces. Shibumi is the first of Travanians novels I read. After that I was hooked. At first it took me a while to get into the book..roughly 40 to 50 pages into the story it picks up and doesn't slow down. The actions and techniques described in this book are very good. Read the book!! You won't be dissappointed.

Very Unique Book.......2007-02-15

Trevanian's Shibumi is a very interesting book, even though I learned that the book is over 25 years old. This book is very hard to classify also because there are alot of genres this book can be classified in and has many themes. I really like this book for it's beautifully crafted and evocative descriptions, the witty dialogue, and the succinct, yet poignant philosophical insights. Similes and metaphors are plentiful in this book. I also taught the setting of book being areas across Asia and Europe were very interesting because when I grow up I want to travel to those areas and learn the culture. The main character Nicholai Hel is a genius,master of many languages,a very skilled assassin, and a master of the game of "Go" which makes the character very mysterious. I also loved the pacing of the book on how it goes from the C.I.A. looking for Hel, To Nicholai's past in Japan, To where it gets to the real action. Shibumi, I also found to be hysterical at some parts. The book also talks about the Japanese philosophy of Shibumi which is a personal state of effortless perfection. The word Shibumi means simple, subtle, and unobtrusive beauty, which is what this book is..

I do not read more than 6 fiction books a year, partly for the reason that Shibumi confirms in me. It's like dating; you have to invest in order to know you do or don't like someone, but by the time the investment is made, even if you find much not to like, you stay along for the ride. The first part of the book was the first phase of dating- new plot, new ideas, excitement, wondering what's next in anticipation and held breath. The second part was the "Oh, so this is how it turns out. Guess I'll hang around to see what happens, but it won't bug me if she never calls back..."

Shibumi starts off pretty well with some of the expected covert ops hijinks, but it became quite engaging when the history of its main character was developed. The whole go, shibumi, essence perspective was worth reaqding teh book for, but had I known how dumb and cardboard it would become, i should have stopped half way in and left just as satisfied.

Women in this book are all just sexual objects, the U.S. is bumbling and stupid (as are nearly all Westerners for Travanian), the dialogue is forced and flat and the action is slower than a game of go. What is most stupid is the way the author ties up the ending DONT READ MORE IF YOU DO NOT WANT IT SPOILED

THe idea that England would sacrifice a plainload of specially trained operatives to cover up for the stupid plot about the PLO terrorists taking over a plane is perhaps the most useless and thoughtless ending to a book i have EVER read. THere were a myriad number of ways to solve the "problem" (if there really ever was one, which is a huge weakness of this book) besides turing to quick, illogical and plainly rediculous plotlines. That alone make sthis book worth one star at best.

Read this book if you find it for free, then recycle.

Buchanan obviously likes Miami, and it comes through in her writing. She worked as a reporter for many years, and that experience also comes across in this novel. The two main story lines are interesting and do not detract from one another. The pace is quick, the action is exciting, the dialogue is real and the plots twists kept my interest from beginning to end.

Three mysteries in one.......2004-08-24

Buchanan, former multiple-award-winning crime reporter for the Miami Herald, enjoying a second successful career as an author, has created a fiesty, indefatigable Miami crime reporter in her heroine, Britt Montero. Montero, a Cuban-American, makes her second appearance in this 1994 novel, which juggles three different crime plots in the steamy atmosphere of mid-summer Miami.

Montero, whose lonely personal life is never going to get better as long as the job comes first, investigates a series of apt accidents, a serial rapist, and the 20-year old unsolved sex murder of a little girl. Plot lines come to the fore and recede into the background in a natural flow depending on Montero's attention.

The child's murder haunts an old cop friend, now dying of heart disease, who believes the hot new candidate for governor is the perp. Montero needles the candidate and interviews the child's family in her spare time.

Meanwhile, the rapist grows more violent and spooky with every success. Montero follows his trail from the police lab to her aunt's Santeria rituals, prying information from the police and piecing together articles which infuriate the rapist and make her a target.

And accidents keep happening to people who couldn't deserve them more.

Montero stays on top of the action, although she doesn't scoop the police completely, which is a nice touch. The newsroom, with its often conflicting interests and strained relationships with police, politicians and each other, crackles with energy.

Buchanan's Miami sizzles and Montero takes us to parts of her city no tourist will ever see.

I'm an avid mystery/suspense reader and a friend recommended Edna Buchanan. This was the first book that I read by her and I loved it. It was well written and interesting and perfect for a summer read.

This book is filled with nonstop action. As one story seems to be resolved, Britt finds herself sliding into another one. And it's handled credibly; it DOES seem like all part of a day's work for our very believable heroine. This is the second book I've read from the series, and I highly recommend it.

For any stone former this book should be thoroughly read, highlighted, and PERIODICALLY REVIEWED LIKE A TEXT BOOK to refresh ones memory!!! Dr. Rodman has many excellent suggestions for prevention of all types of stones. If you are a Calcium-oxalate former like I am, may I also recommend the Low Oxalate Cookbook Two as a companion book. It contains more recent research and data which supplements and reinforces these data presented by Dr. Rodman. If you make the life changes suggested by Dr. Rodman and DRINK YOUR WATER you will have a much better chance at a stone free life. I forgot to review, I got lax about my fluids, I now have one kidney!!

I will never forget the experience of passing a kidney stone three years ago. And, I don't want to forget because I never want to go through it again. "NO MORE KIDNEY STONES" has become my bible. I read through it cover to cover at the time, and I have now reread the new updated edition. It gave me an in-depth understanding of what was happening with my kidneys and, more importantly, it gave me a road map for avoiding kidney stones in the future. All of the diet related information and the food group table in Appendix A (measuring oxalate content) are invaluable. I learned about the importance of oxalates in stone formation and limiting protein intake. "NO MORE KIDNEY STONES" changed my life. I have given the book to everyone I know who has had a kidney problem. Not one day goes by that I do not remember the health of my kidneys. So far this book has helped me avoid a recurrence, and if I do have one, I will be able to handle it better.

When I was 18 years old i encountered my first kidney stone attack and it was absolutely horrendous! That attck was just the first of many to follow. After reading this book, I started to get a better understanding of what was REALLY going on with my body and why my body kept producing stones. It has been almost 7 years and I still refer to this book to learn more about stones, how they form, how to prevent them, and many other helpful information that incompasses it. I have to say that I dont know of any other book that has all the "needed" information right at your finger tips as well as easy to understand and to navigate.

VERY INFORMATIONAL BOOK.......2007-01-26

I enjoyed reading this book. It gives good advice to avoid stones recurrence and it is full of information about what causes kidney stones. Like most books, there isnt really a clear-cut answer to how to get rid of kidney stones-just a lot of subjections. But all-in-all, it is worth the money to learn more about what is going on inside your body and why. As one who has suffered with kidney stones TWICE in four months, I have found the best way to keep them from coming back is to just keep your body ALKALINED daily!!!

I found the recipies in this book very easy to follow and the majority of the ingredients were relatively easy to obtain. The photography work is exceptional; pictures of Tuscany are remarkably colourful and expressive of the lifstyle. The recipies are fantastic, tasty and definitely authentic.

This book is not intended to be a book full of awesome ideas and techniques, but a book that helps CHILDREN make scrapbooks of their lives. I use this book in my ever popular KROPPIN' KIDS classes and the participants (kids) are always inspired by knowing that many of the layouts are done by other children their age. I would reccomend anyone who teaches children, scrapbooking or otherwise, to use the ideas in this book. A great way to empower our kids!

This book has ideas for use with children in documenting their lives as they view it as well as for the adult who is backing up and documenting their own. I am always amazed at this author's ability to take it to the next step in my own thinking for scrapbooking. This book does not have as many PHENOMENAL layouts as you find in her BOOK OF US, but it is created by children, who generally are not the artistic creators like you find in magazines or other idea books. Instead, she has hosted a place to see where your own children can go with layouts and gives ideas for the scrapbooker trying to recapture their own childhood.

Shockingly disappointing.......2005-10-15

I was surprised at some of the ideas in this book being very poorly planned and lacking any sort of expertise. The author takes a very short list of ideas of ways to see your children (who their friends are, what sports they play, what they like in school, what their dreams are) and tries to stretch it into an entire book without originality or creativity. I was terribly disappointed with the lack of effort the author made compared to cheaper options filled with more information, even a basic scrapping magazine (pick any of them) has more technique ideas, layouts, color schemes, product ideas, titles, and suggestions than this whole book. This was a poor attempt for someone trying to make a name for themselves in the scrapbooking world.

...not my cup of tea..........2005-07-20

I bought this book together with the "book about us" from the same author. It is a book that could be interesting if you have children and want to document thier growing up. I didn't really see the use: the projects are not really ones I would tend to create: the subjects did not appeal to me and the layouts did not inspire me, which is strange as I really loved the "book about us".

My ten year old son received this book for Christmas and he loves it. He has really enjoyed learning to draw is favorite Nickelodeon characters. It has great step by step directions that are very easy to follow and not frustrating.
