Journalist Joseph Mitchell, whose death in in May 1996 at the age of 87 merited a half-page obituary in the New York Times, pioneered a style of journalism while crafting brilliant magazine pieces for the New Yorker from the 1930s to the early 1960s. Up in the Old Hotel, a collection of his best reporting, is a 700-page joy to read.

Mitchell lovingly chronicled the lives of odd New York characters. In the pages of Up In the Old Hotel, the reader passes through places such as McSorley's Old Ale House or the Fulton Fish Market that many observers might have found ordinary. But when experienced through Mitchell's gifted eye, the reader will see that these haunts of old New York possess poetry, beauty, and meaning.

Book Description

Mitchell explored a New York City that has now vanished in his four books and his classic reportage for The New Yorker. Mitchell's eccentrics live again in this omnibus volume that contains all of his books and several previously uncollected stories.

5 out of 5 stars This is the kind of writing that will outlast us all.......2007-08-15

Up in the Old Hotel is a masterpiece. I've read it so many times (it is my ultimate desert island book) and have yet to tire of it. The essays (and the few short stories that are included) are timeless, generous works of genius. Joseph Mitchell captures his odd and wonderful subjects as richly realized individuals, and appreciates the smallest of beautiful, dark and humorous nuances. His vision is presented so humbly and offhandedly, yet with absolute precision and so much respect. You truly feel a part of the experience. I'm not sure there is anyone who could write better. All of the essays are amazing, but my favorites are Mr. Hunter's Grave, The Old House at Home, Mazie, and Up in the Old Hotel. The short stories in Section II of the first book are heart wrenching. This book also makes a really great gift.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the greatest journalistic writing ever written.......2007-02-21

This writing puts you right into a time and a place and makes it real.. This is one of the most charming collection of writings I have read so far.. Joseph mitchell's characters of New york are so endearing.. From irish saloon keepers to gypsys to stubborn old men who swear by their diet.. this is great story-telling.. this is the legend of new york..the legends of the real people and eccentrics who inhabit its streets..

5 out of 5 stars Truly a great book........2006-06-09

Whenever I can't think of something to read, I pick up Up in the Old Hotel and read a story or two out of it. I've probably read it 4-5 times and never get tired of it. It captures a lost era of American life that is what I think of when I imagine America in its finest light. Reminiscent of Tortilla Flats and other Steinbeck and even On the Road in a way - a gentler time in our history.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing Fishy Here...........2006-02-24

Well, there is, in the form of several stories of fact and fiction that center around the Fulton Fish Market, and just about all of them are enjoyable. I'll say one thing. If, after reading Up In The Old Hotel, you don't know how to trawl for fish then you didn't really read this book. All in all, over 700 pages of unique character studies. Mitchell seemed to find someone interesting where no one else cared to look. I fully intend to buy more Mitchell.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book I Ever Read.......2005-10-06

I just got done reading this book and I'm sad that it's over. I figure I'll wait a couple of months and then read it right the way through again. I won't go into a lot of boring detail outlining Mitchells fantastically readable writing style and the ease with which he relates incredibly detailed stories and histories he's heard from other people, suffice to say this book will take hold of you and it won't let go. I just feel like this is the book I've been waiting for all my life. Never before has a book fascinated me so much. What struck me most was that I never once became tired of reading it, even right up to the end...usually with a 700 page book I'll be pining for the end by page 500, or I'm bored of the style or the subject matter - not so with "Up in the Old Hotel". It'll have you both regretful that you weren't around 60 years ago, or else wondering if such interesting characters still exist in New York today. Of note are the two incredibly detailed and accurate chapters about gypsies, and the fictional Mr Flood stories. Oh what the hell, it's ALL amazing stuff. I think I decided that Mr Mitchell is the best writer who ever lived by page 100. How come I never knew about this book until I saw it piled high in a second hand book store - and how come they aren't forcing kids to read this alongside such classics as "Huckleberry Finn" and "Life on the Mississippi"? I intend to make it my lifes work to turn as many people as possible on to this incredible book. Don't hesitate, buy it!

                    Book Description

Lily Brewster and her brother Robert have all the appearances of being filthy rich, even though the family fortune went out the window with the crash of 1929. But thanks to great-uncle Horatio, who left them Grace and Favor Cottage, a huge mansion on the Hudson not far from Franklin Roosevelt's Hyde Park, the Brewsters live in the style to which they had become accustomed--with a few troublesome limitations.

To make sure Lily and Robert didn't go back to being society bums, crafty old Horatio attached some strings to his bequest--and a penny-pinching attorney to manage the funds. Now the poor Brewsters have to actually work for money to survive, and Lily comes up with a brilliant scheme. They can turn a profit while they hobnob with their society friends, luring them to Grace and Favor for a paying weekend with the promise of big-name celebrities as guests.

If Sinclair Lewis hadn't been working on a new book, he might have joined the party; if Amelia Earhart hadn't been busy planning her cross-Atlantic flight, history might not have its own unsolved mystery. And if the Brewsters' celebrity/society bash hadn't been short on luminaries and long on snide barbs and open hostility among the guests, the glittering, glamorous affair might not have turned into a whodunit with one guest dead, one missing, and Lily and Robert chasing a murderer who is ready to strike again.

4 out of 5 stars Murder is an Uninvited Guest at Grace and Favor Cottage.......2006-07-30

As the Great Depression drags into 1933, siblings Robert and Lily Brewster are looking for ways to make money in their new home of Voorburg-on-Hudson. Robert and Lily decide to use the mansion they inherited from their Great Uncle Horatio to host a paying weekend where their society friends (who still have plenty of money) can mingle with celebrity writer Julian West. The glamorous weekend gets off to a bumpy start, though, when there are veiled hostilities between some of the guests. The party weekend is completely spoiled when Lorna Ethridge, one of the geusts, is found strangled in her bedroom after the first evening at Grace and Favor. In an effort to clear the mansion of scandal, Lily and Robert set out to find out the killer's identity.

"In the Still of the Night" is the second novel in the Grace and Favor series, set in upper New York State during the Great Depression. The story is filled with everyday details about life in the Depression and is full of 1930's ambience. Author Churchill continues to do a great job of developing the main characters in the story, as well as fleshing out other characters who were only briefly introduced in the series premiere "Anything Goes." I look forward to enjoying the next installment in this fun period mystery series.

                    1 out of 5 stars A Complete Bore.......2005-06-20

As a lover of a good mystery, I picked up this book because it listed Ms. Churchill as being the "Winner of the Agatha and Macavity Mystery Readers Awards." She obviously did not win with this piece of work.
It almost reads more as a romance novel for women too ashamed to buy the books with Fabio on the cover.
The outcome is predictable and the subplot is mundane at best. Not for sincere fans of mysteries.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh and Innovative Series Set in Depression - Era.......2004-03-21

Jill Churchill only gets better with the second book of her "Grace and Favor" mystery series. "In the Still of the Night" adds a little more mystery to the plot and a few additional characters as well.

"In the Still of the Night" continues the saga where Lily and her brother, Robert Brewster are contemplating various ways to add to their income. Their relative's will stipulates that they must earn their living expenses (minus the upkeep of the house, etc.) for 10 years - before inheriting the estate.

Hesitantly, they embark on the venture to invite a famous novelist for the weekend and invite various wealthy friends as paying guests. They know many who will pay for the priviledge of spending the weekend at the manor in his company. A murder takes place and in order to earn any type of profit at all - they must solve the mystery. (As well as knowing that one amongst them is a murderer.)

I especially enjoyed how the plot and characters were so believable. Also, Churchill does a wonderful job of incorporating various historical facts of the time into the story. It is interesting to read that Phoebe makes hats for Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt whose husband is the governor in a nearby city! When Lily invites Phoebe as a boarder to their mansion, Churchill gives a very sound reasoning for Phoebe's decision. This type of detail makes the characters very multi-faceted with a great deal of depth.

                    Excellent book; wonderful series!

                    5 out of 5 stars I'd give it a six if I could.......2002-06-17

As a fan of Jill Churchill, I have read all of her Jane Jeffry titles. When I saw a new series, I doubted it could live up to my expectations based in the other series. I found the Grace and Favor series, if which this is the first, to be a totally fresh kind of mystery for me. The era of the Depression in a fascinating time of contrasts between the haves and have-nots. Lily and Robert are both. They seem to have inherited a line back to the good life, but making ends meet continues to be a challenge for them.
The idea of a house party with paying guests was certainly a new one to me. It was written with a lot of character development necessary to the future of the series, but with here-and-now action. A great read, as well as a great send-off for a new series.

4 out of 5 stars The party should have gone off without a hitch.......2000-11-29

For Robert and Lily Brewster, the planned gathering at Grace and Favor Cottage held the possibility of a living. For the guests, both honored and paying, it turned into something gelse entirely. Lily's hopes for the literary gathering featuring author, Julian West, are thwarted when one of their guests turns up dead and the much-valued manuscript of another disappears. When it appeals the two incidents might be linked, the brother and sister duo find themselves on the hunt for another killer in order to preserve their aspirations for their inherited cottage.

Jill Churchill displays a stunning ability to integrate the history of the 1930's with the fiction she writes. This is perhaps the story's greatest recommendation. The mystery itself is thin and while suspenseful, it also becomes somewhat predictable. What the mystery has to recommend itself are the strongly drawn characters with interesting quirks of credible motives. I did enjoy Lily's guests, but perhaps the most entertaining of them all was Robert's "idiot", Mad Henry, whose skill, or lack thereof, as an inventor, proves to be a constant source of irritation and bafflement for Lily though it ends up paying off in the end.

The Lost Scrolls of King Solomon follows the physical and spiritual journeys of Benjamin Stein, an orthodox Jew, who chose to study history rather than become a rabbi.

While a martial-arts discipline helps satisfy the yearnings cultivated in Stein as a youth, he is increasingly plagued by bizarre nightmares. His sensei encourages him to seek his roots--his boyhood religion in Israel.

Stein is immersed in a dangerous quest for relics hidden by King Solomon for the Messiah who would come at the end time. He is accompanied in this quest by a Jewish Rabbi and an Arab family.

Author Richard Behrens manages to work most of the standard quest motifs into this fast-paced tale. The artifact retrieved in the first outing is critical to successfully beginning the second. Riddles make appearances in several locations--one time in the form of a contest. One outing produces an artifact whose only purpose is to test Stein's resolve, and another produces nothing other than its impact on Stein's character. Like other authors who have depicted tours of Hell and Heaven (the obvious Dante, and the Niven and Pournelle version Inferno likely familiar to Behrens's readers), swipes are taken at contemporary figures along with men, women, and demons from ancient tales.

Throughout, Stein receives instruction from an array of otherwordly creatures. Their names are familiar to readers of sacred texts such as the Tanakh, the Christian Bible, and the Koran, but their characters prove to be rather different than fundamentalists of any stripe typically depicted. A lot of the fun is in seeing how that is made to fit with the received texts.

While any level of familiary with Kabbalah probably would help to understand the worldview informing this novel, it's not really necessary. Whether raised Jewish, Christian, or Muslim, you'll get enough of the references to get a bang out of this tale. Great literature? Not really, and it probably won't attract the sort of dedicated following that Robert Anton Wilson's efforts have, but it's a fun little romp through blasphemous territory. There's even an appendix at the back so you can try the breathing exercises used by the protagonist throughout the book to succeed in his quest.--Rebecca Allen

                      5 out of 5 stars Frightening.......2003-05-03

This book is probably the most frightening I have ever read because it seems to me that it isn't a work of fiction at all! The author is the real deal as far as martial arts goes. This is extremely obvious to anyone who knows anything at all about martial arts and reads his other book. Also, several of his students still teach. At least one that I know of has a web page with avi clips on it. The technique displayed is VERY advanced. The meditation techniques in this book, do exactly what he says they do and lend authority to everything else he has written. I, for one, am in the habit of believing those that know correct technique and take those that don't with a grain of salt. That is the real test of anyone that would write anything about spiritual issues. Do they know correct technique that is immediately effective and becomes more effective the more you use them? This author meets that criteria. I have experienced this for myself. But don't take my word for it. Try it and see for yourself.

3 out of 5 stars Novel in service of a message.......2003-01-11

While this novel is adequately written, it is not enhanced by extremely gifted writing or an intriguing plot line. The adventure is somewhat predictable, the romance even more predictable, and the spiritual insights derivative of New Age sensibilities put forth as teaching devices through the mouths of several of the characters. Although the descriptions of hell and heaven are at times interesting, if I had it to do over, I would skip the story and head straight for the appendix where there is a summary of the spiritual exercises mentioned in the novel. They alone are probably the most valuable part of this book.

Well I must say that I am quite disappointed in this book. Knowing the author very well I had different expectations. I will leave the rest of my comments for the author himself. Are you ready to talk? ... Mila ( VFOXXXaol.com )

Most of the people who reviewed this book have obviously not understood it. Mr Behrens knows his stuff. I don't agree with it all but that doesn't matter a damn as far as I'm concerned. How brain dead does a person have to be not to realise what the author is doing here? If the smart know it alls who whine about how poor this book is want a peice of advice then they should go and read "The Magus" by Francis Barret, because obviously they are_SO_ inteligent that anything else is beneath them NOT. Why? because the'd cream their breeches if they read anything with actual content. The irony is that this book has a great deal of VERY valuable content, they just can't see it. The caliber this work is aimed at is obvious as soon as you look at the cover. So why whine when you don't get what you want from it.

Anybody who knows what they want reads the cover first. If you buy the book without doing that you can't complain if you don't like it.

This book teaches you the following: How to quickly and easily calm your thoughts How to stimulate your heart chakra in order to shift your conciousness to be more in tune with your higher self. How to access the records of your past How to combine awareness of physical reality and "God" into one

The book is not intended as a "story". The book is a teaching tool. This book easily tops 99% of new age books for real useful content.

I don't agree with some of his philosophy, but I accept it as being a part of what he belives. Though who's to say he even believes it. The book is there. Take what you will from it when and as you choose.

Also check out his martial arts book "teachings of a grand master" which details many esoteric techniques (straight, simple, practical, effewctive, devoid of human acretions of tradion/dogma -well mostly-)

I don't know much about demon's and their names, but this guy seemed good in inventing them. I find the book intriguing at first but as I read on, I was so bored and disappointed. The medallion is a poor excuse to sell a book.

                      Book Description

Detoxification promotes wellness by ridding the body of poisons that can lead to a host of health problems ranging from fatigue and depression to cancer and diabetes. This revised edition of the popular nutrition-based health guide presents new advice and up-to-date information on detoxification and healing.

In clear language, the author explains body chemistry, how detoxification works, and why it is so important. He discusses new medications, vitamin and mineral supplements, delayed food allergies, the dangers of mercury and aluminum poisoning, and much more.

I really like this book. It is not too big but and not too hard to understand. I met this wonderful doctor and he knows his subject very well.

5 out of 5 stars The first book on this topic that I've gotten excited about!.......2006-02-01

I wish every mainstream doctor would read this book. I've read a half dozen books on detoxification, and this is the best! His presentation is clear, concise, and backed by science. The case history examples he is able to present to testify to his claims, come from his 30 plus years in medical practice. I'd much rather read the instruction from a person so well versed in biochemestry than some of the other books that offer only the testimonials of lay-persons as proof that their ideas are sound.

                      3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2005-02-19

I thought this book was going to be more about detoxification through nutrition. Instead, it's about supplements you can take to alleviate nutritional deficencies. Baker does do a super job of showing the food/body/ health connection. He also clearly illustrates how all the body's systems and functions are connected and dependent on one another. This book is much more open minded and thoughtful in the art of healing than modern medicine, which refuses to admit that diet affects your health. It's a pretty good book but I wish he spent more time on actual foods than supplements.

5 out of 5 stars More than the usual "detox" book........2004-01-16

This is a book written by an Orthomolecular doctor at his best. What you get here is much more than "how toos". Detoxification is about working from the fundamentals of a system and out from there. Dr. Baker, in speaking about this subject, gives a great example of how balance and imbalance, in healing, has always made perfect sense. This is a very enlightening and informative set of ideas that can help open new ways of thinking. Not, "way out - new age" concepts, but common sense connections about how our choices effect us and how we can be empowered to make changes to heal. I recommend this highly and also for anyone that wants to get a very good glimpse at how a good Orthomolecular doctor thinks about things.

When I read it was 80 pages, I expected it to be a regular sized book. It's only about the size of a postcard! (4.5" X 5.5") No photos at all. If you want a Tex Mex cookbook, this one is great, but I just ordered a different one to go along with it for a "complete" recipe collection.

This book offers a revealing glimpse into our commercial culture of consumerism as it was just getting started 120 years ago. It is amazing the things you could buy in 1886! Medicines were marketed to meet every possible insecurity or physical shortcoming. The sale ads are just as persuasive as they are today. A five dollar watch for three dollars! We often do not realize how influential the culture of this era, the Victorian era, was on how we live today.

2 out of 5 stars Ugliest Kids Sweaters Ever.......2007-01-19

I was very disappointed by the designs in this book. The colors and styles seem outdated or just plain tacky: the tiny checkerboard borders, the comicly gigantic knitted sweatpants, the painfully busy color patterns. The look like they were designed in 1983, not 2003. Also, most of the pullovers have huge necklines that make them look ill-fitting. There were only two or three items I would even consider making. The rest just make me cringe. I gave it 2 stars because the instructions for knitting techniques are well-written and useful, but these designs are just not my style!

5 out of 5 stars A quantum leap in this design team's talent!.......2003-03-20

A year or so ago, I borrowed a copy of _Paintbox Knits_, the first book collaberation of this design team. I have to say that I was a little underwhelmed: there were three or four patterns that piqued my interest, but not one for which I would bump another project's priority on my "to knit" list. The patterns were simple enough for me, as a busy mom and newbie knitter, but they seemed "gimmicky", relying on busy color schemes that reminded me of boxy machine-knit store brands, more than anything.

With this book, it seems the author/designers have truly come into their own! They still have a penchant for color, but so many of the new patterns make beautiful use of texture, simple cable patterns, etc. to create a garment that could easily be adapted to the knitter's personal color sense and style. Even a relatively "busy" pattern like their American Flag pullover is an understated classic. (Although I'm not likely to be knitting those dizzying button-and-intarsia strewn holiday sweaters...)

With the current "knitting is cool again" fad, and a plethora of teaching books riding the wave, the authors have found a good balance between over-complexity and the temptation to make every knitting book a "teach the newbies" book. No, there are no Debbie Bliss style works of exquisite and intricate precision here, but the authors do provide some wonderful and not-too-intimidating introductions to new techniques such as Entrelac, a basketweave-look pattern.

My rule of thumb is that a pattern book should have at least at least one "must have" pattern in it for every dollar it costs. By that standard, I think that lots of folks who have children to knit for will find Paintbox Knits II well worth the investment!

                              Book Description

Udder Insanity tells the story of Tom Green's life from his early beginnings as the host of the late-night Ottawa radio show Midnight Caller, through his transformation into a Juno-nominated rap artist, to The Tom Green Show's great success on the Canadian Comedy Network, and finally to his current incarnation as M-TV's renegade prankster. Described as the "Master of Mayhem," Tom Green has built an entire career on the vile and the vulgar: munching on a handful of gooey Vaseline-coated human hair, turning his parents' car into the now infamous "Slut Mobile" (featuring an airbrushed portrait of an explicit lesbian love scene on the hood), dragging a rotten raccoon corpse on to Open Mike, and getting up-close-and-personal with his bovine friends. As Udder Insanity reveals, it seems nothing or no one is above being sucked into the underbelly of Tom's demented and hilarious world.

How could a biography on the funniest person in the world be udderly terrible rather than udderly insane?! By writing a terribly contradictory unauthorized biography with basically no quotes and possible inaccurate information. Also assumption of Tom going hollywood! This Book Blows

one of the best books i have read with real life events. you do not have to be a tom greene fan to like this book. all you need to know is how to read and have a good sense of humor(and if you don't have one this book will get you on the right track). this book is filled with interesting facts on tom and his family.and i highly reccomend this book

4 out of 5 stars It was a very good book for fans of the canadian episodes!.......2000-05-26

The book was very good...but I would have wished they could have had more on the MTV shows. I found the partes on his childhood very interestcing though. Also it didn't mention his testicluar cancer which was one of the most inportant events in his life...guess they didn't get it dont in time. But a great book for any Tom Green fan!
