Book Description
Ned Halloran has lost both his parents--and almost his own life--to the sinking of the Titanic . Determined to keep what little he has, he returns to his homeland in Ireland and enrolls at Saint Enda's school in Dublin. Saint Enda's headmaster is the renowned scholar and poet, Patrick Pearse--who is soon to gain greater fame as a rebel and patriot. Ned becomes totally involved with the growing revolution....and the sacrifices it will demand. Through Ned's eyes, 1916 examines the Irish fight for freedom--inspired by poets and schoolteachers, fueled by a desperate desire for independence, and played out in the historic streets of Dublin against the backdrop of World War I. It is the story of the brave men and heroic women who, for a few unforgettable days, managed to hold out against the might of the British Empire to realize an impossible dream.

Historical fiction with a capital 'H'.......2007-09-24
As much a history as historical fiction, Llywelyn populates the story of the Easter Rising in Ireland with many more real people than fictional, along with copious notes indicating her historical sources for the details she weaves into the tale.
It would be hard to find a better subject for an historical novel, and Llywelyn does a fine job of balancing story-telling with historical accuracy and completeness. Some of the characters remain two-dimensional, but there are so many characters in this tale, that it's hardly surprising.
An all around good read, and a great way to learn a lot more about this time in Irish history.
Brilliant.......2006-04-15
This is a beautiful book,poignant,stunning,gripping.
And there is something in the way Morgan Llywelyn writes that without her having to use any great excess of adjectives you see the picture she is painting with perfect clarity.
An important novel for anyone to read but an absolute nesceccity for the Irish fanatics.I also suggest "Six Days to Shake an Empire" and Frank Delaney's "Ireland".
The story of the Easter Rebellion always reminds me of one of Jimmy Stewart's lines in Mr.Smith goes to Washington, when he says that the lost causes are the only ones worth fighting for.
Brilliant,brilliant,brilliant.
Painful.......2004-06-30
If tortured prose is to your taste, by all means pick up this exemplary model of how to bore a reader to tears with forced, plodding, contrived exposition. The historical facts are razor sharp; the writing style underwhelms with dullness.
A history lesson that goes down easy.......2004-04-11
I enjoyed this novel very much, and not only because of its strong characters and riveting plot. Morgan Llywelyn entertains while she teaches, and I learned a great deal about Irish history and the fundamental reasons for the fractious state of affairs that exist today in the north. After reading 1916, I went on to read the other two books in Llywelyn's series, 1921 and 1949. Readers who enjoy 1916 are likely to enjoy the other two books as well.
A must-read for history and fiction buffs alike!.......2003-07-12
I must be honest, I had this book on a shelf for a year before I actually read it, but once started I could not put it down! Sadly, Ireland's history is glossed over at best in American schools, and I was only vaguely familiar with Ireland's fight for independence.
This book was enough to satisfy my love of a good novel, and cunningly interweaves fictional characters through documented history. I was a bit thrown off by the footnotes at first, but by the time I finished the book, I was interested enough to actually look up some of the titles to learn more about the Easter Rising. I am now reading the second in this series (I was very happy to learn that there are two more books beyond 1916!) and will be bringing the last in the series with me when I travel to Ireland next month! A great way to dip into history without being bogged down by dry facts.
Book Description
Early in his career, Judge Dee visits a senior magistrate who shows him a beautiful lacquer screen on which a scene of lovers has been mysteriously altered to show the man stabbing his lover. The magistrate fears he is losing his mind and will murder his own wife. Meanwhile, a banker has inexplicably killed himself, and a lovely lady has allowed Dee's lieutenant, Chiao Tai, to believe she is a courtesan. Dee and Chiao Tai go incognito among a gang of robbers to solve this mystery, and find the leader of the robbers is more honorable than the magistrate.
"One of the most satisfyingly devious of the Judge Dee novels, with unusual historical richness in its portrayal of the China of the T'ang dynasty."-—New York Times Book Review
"Even Judge Dee is baffled by Robert van Gulik's new mysteries in The Lacquer Screen. Disguised as a petty crook, he spends a couple of precarious days in the headquarters of the underworld, hobnobbing with the robber king. Dee's lively thieving friends furnish some vital clues to this strange and fascinating jigsaw."-—The Spectator
"So scrupulously in the classic Chinese manner yet so nicely equipped with everything to satisfy the modern reader."-—New York Times
Robert Van Gulik (1910-67) was a Dutch diplomat and an authority on Chinese history and culture. He drew his plots from the whole body of Chinese literature, especially from the popular detective novels that first appeared in the seventeenth century.
Customer Reviews:
utter refinement.......2005-10-02
Some 1,350 years ago Judge Dee was a real existing magistrate in ancient China. Gaining himself a reputation for solving crimes, he lived on in Chinese folk tales for many decades afterwards. In the mid-20th century Dutch diplomat and China-scientist Robert van Gulik used these tales to write his Judge Dee-novels.
'The lacquer screen' is one of these. At first sight it contains all usual qualities of a Judge Dee-novel. Such as a few complicated & intelligent plots, logically explained to the reader in the course of the story. Such as a chosen setting, its atmosphere penetrating the novel from start to finish. Such as a close cooperation between Judge Dee and his assistents, this time only one of them. Such as a lively picture of ancient Chinese society, from the upper layers down to the poorest.
In this novel the plot shows a refined literary touch, that fully develops at the end. Its story is set in a neighboring district where Judge Dee lacks authority. In compensation his one assistent is both intelligent and physically strong -- in this way influencing the plot's development. And we see Judge Dee intensively communicate with his colleague-magistrate, as well as with the local beggar's community.
What makes 'The lacquer screen' special in the Judge Dee-series, is its refined literary double-bottom emerging at the end. Even surprising an experienced Judge Dee-reader, this development makes another stunning example of Van Gulik's ingenuity. For this reason his Judge Dee should live on in the same way Sherlock Holmes does.
The Lacquer Screen : A Chinese Detective Story (A Judge Dee.......2000-04-27
This is one of the first chronological detective adventures of Judge Dee. The judge is visiting one place and gets involved in several murder cases. It follows the classical structure: independent plots in the traditional Chinese detective story style. The lacquer screen is presented as a supernatural object but Dee manages to return it to everyday world. A book recommended for the Van Gulik followers.

Confrontation with a Medusa-like Goddess.......2002-04-03
This is the last book of the trilogy "Blood of the Goddess", and the one with the most action and suspense. Thomas Chinnery, a trader, has made a bargain with the Inquisition who has arrested him, that he will be freed if he leads them to the source of the magical powdered blood, which can bring the dead back to life. Chinnery only pretends to know how to find it in order to save his life, but he also wishes to obtain the blood to revive the murdered Aditi, whom he loves. This expedition, as well as an expedition of Moghuls, are headed for Bhagavati, the city of the goddess Mahadevi.
During the journey, no one can be trusted, but arriving in Bhagavati, the expeditions face their greatest danger in a magnificent palace, which is infused with an atmosphere of cold beauty and dark magic. Mahadevi exercises her power to turn men into stone (like Medusa), but Thomas escapes within the walls of the palace. The struggle between Chinnery and Father Gonscao, who wishes to destroy this place, this goddess, continues here.
Although this is not my usual genre of reading material, I found the series, especially this last book, quite enjoyable, and in particular, the palace of the Mahadevi has left a memorable visual impression.

Customer Reviews:
Sleep deprivation can mimic mental illness........2007-10-06
Excellent book, often times sleep disorders are mistaken for "mental illness" ... Schizophrenia, ADHD, OCD, Bi-Polar Disorder, Depression ... you name it.
An often overlooked point is the pre-mature babies of the world, they may tend to have a more sensitive nervous system then "normal" babies. And also "Big Babies" regardless to whether they are premature can have rather serious medical issues.
BIG BABY SYNDROME - Is sometimes used synonymously with Large For Gestational Age, or is otherwise defined as a fetus that weighs above 4000 grams (8 lb 13 oz) or 4500 grams (9 lb 15 oz) regardless of gestational age.
Also some biological problems such as a deviated septum may be responsible for some sleep disorders. Sleep apnea and other breathing problems can create havoc on daytime energy levels.
Some of the topics covered in the book:
JACTATIO CAPITIS NOCTURNA - Swinging or banging of the head before or during sleep, or in the phase between these two states.
PAVOR NOCTURNUS (Night Terror) - A night terror, also known as pavor nocturnus, is a parasomnia sleep disorder characterized by extreme terror and a temporary inability to regain full consciousness. The subject wakes abruptly from the fourth stage of sleep, with waking usually accompanied by gasping, moaning, or screaming. It is often impossible to fully awaken the person, and after the episode the subject normally settles back to sleep without waking. A night terror can occasionally be recalled by the subject. They typically occur during non-REM sleep. ... a person can always stick a voice activated tape recorder near their bed to see if any bizarre "conversations" occur at nighttime.
- Extreme sleepwalking (including moving furniture), bruxism (teeth grinding) and other behaviors can result from night terrors.
Unlike nightmares, which are frequently a scary event dream (e.g. a monster under the bed, falling to one's death, etc.), night terrors are not dreams. Usually there is no situation or event (scary or otherwise) that is dreamt, but rather the emotion of fear itself is felt. Often, this is coupled with tension and apprehension without any distinct sounds or visual imagery, although sometimes a vague object of fear is identified by the sufferer. These emotions, generally without a focusing event or scenario, increase emotions in a cumulative effect. The lack of a dream itself leaves those awakened from a night terror in a state of disorientation much more severe than that caused by a normal nightmare. This can include a short period of amnesia during which the subject may be unable to recall his name, location, age, or any other identifying features of himself. This state generally passes after only one or two minutes.
PARASOMNIAS - Is any sleep disorder such as sleepwalking, sleepeating, sleep sex, teeth grinding, night terrors, rhythmic movement disorder, REM behavior disorder, restless leg syndrome, and somniloquy (or sleep talking), characterized by partial arousals during sleep or during transitions between wakefulness and sleep. Parasomnias are often associated with stress and depression, and biological factors may also be involved. Many parasomnias are more common in children than in adults.
SOMNILOQUY (Sleep-talking) - A parasomnia that refers to talking aloud in one's sleep. It can be quite loud, ranging from simple sounds to long speeches, and can occur many times during sleep. Listeners may or may not be able to understand what the person is saying.
... Of course some of the more incompetent medical doctors have near zero knowledge about true sleep disorders. Horror stories of people with severe sleep disorders mistakenly being given "psychotropic" drugs abound. My advice is to try one of the newer generation sleep aids such as Ambien.
Welcome information.......2007-01-11
The book was informative and easy to understand. The author seemed sensitive to the suffering of patients with sleep disorders. He seemed like the answer to long suffering. The information from the book filled in the gaps for question I've had for many years. I was so excited I decided to look up Dr.Hirshkowitz for consultation. After two over night sleep studies, Dr. Hirshkowitz is nowhere to be found,no consultation. The clinic's push is to purchase a sleep machine.
What the title says!.......2006-07-10
Very helpful. Very simple. Helps patients quickly identify the problems they're having. The simple steps recommended for finding the appropriate sleep lab are helpful. For those who haven't been through it before, not all sleep labs are created equal! Neither are all CPAPs! Take a look at this book to get background information on how to make THE RIGHT decisions!
Non Sleep Inducing.......2005-10-24
The book "Sleep Disorders for Dummies" is like the other Dummies books in that it takes a rather difficult subject and makes it a easy for a normal person to understand. It fairly completely (at least for non medical professionals) covers the range of sleep problems from Insomnia to Narcolepsy with stops at other problems like Sleep Apnea.
I was acquainted with some of the material before, but found this book to be easy to read and understand. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to know about sleep problems.
its about sleep disorders ... .......2005-08-07
Well ... I will admit that the so-what factor is at an all-time high.
Give this book a chance, see beyond the title.
I'm sure that the fully illustrated and annotated ¨Cultivating and Harvesting Mind-Altering Plants for Dummies¨ would get a lot more hits.
However, this book lists the sleep disorders that are common today, and describes them in adequate detail. This book made me aware of the symptoms and the potential danger of Sleep Apnea. He also goes into more benign problems, such as insomnia, circadian rhythm disorders, narcolepsy and hypersomnia.
He presents ideas on what habits and lifestyles lead to sleep problems like insomnia; he also offers reasonable solutions to them.
This book would be helpful to anybody who takes care of themself or anyone else, like a child, a spouse or an older relative. He presents a series of symptoms that are tell-tale signs of a parasomnia, such as sleep-walking, talking, or even sleep-eating. (He calls that syndrome the 'midnight raider'.) He also includes pediatric sleep disorders.
He lists sleep disrupters, that is, bad habits that interfear with sleep. He also gives advice on how to turn your room into a sleepie-paradise. No sleep disorder mentioned is incurable.
In general good book, my only complaint is his implication that the night-owl or the night-shift worker has a sleep disorder. This isn't an ideal world.

Book Description
To travelers, the Italian Riviera and its famous villages-- Portofino, the Cinque Terre-- have meant "vacation," "sea" and "sun" for more than a century. To food lovers everywhere its culinary triumphs such as pesto, focaccia and ravioli are icons of Italian cooking. Liguria is known as well for the trompe-l'oeil that decorates it architecture inside and out, and for its crafts-- furniture-making, boat-building and lace-weaving among others, for which it has been renowned for centuries.
This gorgeous book is devoted to Liguria, Italy's picturesque and culturally rich region that boasts a breathtaking Mediterranean seacoast and its mountainous "backyard." Downie's lively account of the fascinating history and lifestyle is matched by Harris's photographs of Liguria's dramatic locales, from Camogli, the "saltiest, most piratical town" on the Mediterranean, to the interior, a vast, vertical garden dotted with towns carved from the rugged landscape. Enchanted Liguria also includes rarely photographed interiors of grand aristocratic villas and elegant houses, some of which have been family homes since before the unification of Italy.
Thirty recipes from the region's best chefs reflect the taste of Liguria in a celebration of herbs, marvelous pastas, breads and seafood. The appendix is a guide to museums, villas, specialty food stores and workshops. Enchanted Liguria is a practical, essential and beautiful tribute.
Customer Reviews:
Enchanted by Enchanted Liguria.......2001-08-09
Genoaýtoo bad this fascinating city has been in the news because of the shocking police brutality against protestors at the Group of 8 summit meeting held there in July.
Fortunately, thereýs more to Genoa than those unfortunate events and if you read David Downieýs well-written and informative celebration of the culture, lifestyle and food of the Italian Riviera, youýll see why. Downie writes authoritatively and graciously: his sidebars on everything from trompe-lýýil (which the Genoans didnýt invent but which they did make full use of) to pesto (which appears in all their dishes) to native son Christopher Columbus (who the author discovered is, for the Genoans, just one explorer among many ) give a real feel for the art and architecture, history and cuisine of this largely unknown area of Italy. Photographer Alison Harrisonýs beautiful photos also give us a feel for the place, from the interiors of magnificent palaces and humble kitchens to the colorful details of a greengrocerýs shop in the carrugi, Genoaýs medieval city. The traditional Ligurian recipes presented are not only mouthwatering, but doable. In fact, rather than write this review, I think Iýll go cook up a dish of Coniggio aýa carlonn-a (rabbit fricasseed with herbs, pine nuts, olives and white wine). I know I canýt mess it upý " a-a carlonn-a ", the author explains, means that even an idiot can make this simple dish successfully.
Visit to the Italian Riviera.......2000-01-19
If you are just looking for a bunch of regional recipes this book is not for you. If you want to make a vicarious journey to Liguria through the eyes of this book, then it is for you. Thankfully the authors do not overly romanticize Liguria. They take you into the backwoods, hills, and farms, not just the charming ocean villages. Only about 1/4 of this book is recipes. But when you come away with a "feel" for a region and not just a laundry list of recipes, you have a larger experience than just food. I wish more regional cookbooks gave you this kind of glimpse into the region. Despite all of this, I think there could have been more recipes. I learned so much about Liguria from this book. I just wanted more ways of bringing Ligurian food "home" to my kitchen. Whenever I can afford a trip to Italy, it will contain a stop in Liguria all because of this book.
superb.......1998-08-11
It's the next best thing to being in Italy. William Murray, long-time New Yorker contributor and author of Italy, the Fatal Gift
For good reason, the region has been called "Enchanted Liguria" by authors David Downie and Alison Harris. In their lavishly illustrated book (Rizzoli, 1997), this husband-and-wife team have vividly captured the culture, history, and daily life of this delightful place in pictures and words. Lorna Sass, Los Angeles Times syndicate
David Downie investigates the unique and often misunderstood character of Liguria and how that is reflected in its architecture, lifestyle and cuisine. It's a fascinating but unromanticized view of an insular people... Daniel Young, New York Daily News
Beautifully presented... this book closes the way all fine things Italian must -- with a good meal, and Downie's flourish of fine wine and recipes leaves readers with a sense of Liguria that is as satisfyingly complete as it is mouthwateringl! y inviting. San Francisco Sunday Examiner
Complete with authentic recipes, stunning photography by Alison Harris, and a detailed guide to cultural and epicurean hot spots, the 208-page book captures the spirit and customs of the hidden hilltop villages and enticing Riviera beaches of northwest Italy's Liguria region. Appellation Magazine
Splendid illustrations and equally well written... This book is an act of love, but first and foremost a work of meticulous, heartfelt research... a tale of traditions, landscapes and beauties that, often, even Ligurians themselves do not know... Many will be surprised to discover a fantastic reality that they see every day and, precisely because of that, fail to capture. Il Secolo XIX, major Italian daily
The fruit of their labor is a very interesting book, destined to arouse the curiosity even of those who know -- or pretend to know -- Liguria inside and out. Il Giornale, major Italian daily

Customer Reviews:
Before you buy this..........2000-11-09
You need to know that there are NO color pictures in this guide. This book has small b&w photos of what must be nearly all of R.A. Fox's prints with a price guide. It's great to know all the names of the pictures that I have, and the one's that I've seen that I would like to have. However, this book is better for someone with better eyes than I have. For me, the b&w photos are too small to distinguish much of the detail.

Very worthwhile.......2007-08-11
One of few exceptional decor books out there. Set apart from the rest because the writer gives the reader very valuable tips - information not easily picked-up by just looking at photographs which is what so many other decor books are filled with. It is by far one of the best books in my decor book collection.
One of my favorites.......2007-07-24
A beautiful book with good advice. Mr.Wolf presents his talent and vision for decorating chic rooms as well as his unique perspective on what works and what doesn't. Here's to an original!
beautiful book.......2007-06-01
Vicente Wolf is a great designer with a clean, modern yet luxury driven aesthetic. His interiors are always chic with little surprises thrown in like gilt Louis XV chairs tossed around a modern round table. Love that. The book is a great resource for color (which he actually gives Ben Moore specs) and for spacial planning. He tends to wax poetic about design and his vision...blah, blah, blah, but the photographs speak for themselves.
Excellent Design insights.......2006-08-07
I am planning on becoming a decorator in the future and this book was an excellent inspiration as well as a great resource for ideas and thinking outside of the box.
It's a sophisticated view of the home, not just typical how to's that leave you with a stale idea of how to decorate. Rather each page is a refreshing and dynamic look at different ways to design a room.
No cheesy floral valances or typical catalog rooms. These pages are filled with thought provoking furniture and color choices to stimulate your own creativity.
a REAL power to SEE.......2005-10-26
This book is beatiful in its layout and composition, as well as the concepts presented ... and it's helping me see and create more pleasing compositions in my world - both in my physical environment and with my photography.

OUTSTANDING REFERENCE TOOL.......2007-09-14
Previously, DK Books has release four volumes in their Star Wars cross-sections series, covering the various Star Wars films. In celebration of the 30th anniversary of Star Wars, they've now combines all four of those volumes, along with new illustrations into the massive Star Wars: The Complete Cross Sections. This coffee table-sized hardcover book packs information on every ship and vehicle used in the six films into 152 full-color pages. John Knoll, the Visual Effects Supervisor for episodes I - III, provides the foreword to the book.
The book is basically an encyclopedia for Star Wars ships and vehicles. The items are shown in a cutaway art, allowing the reader to not only see the outside, but also see the interiors as well. This gives fans a unique viewpoint as you generally didn't get a chance to see inside many of these ships and vehicles in the films themselves. Most of these are given a full two-page spread which include data files about each one. The data files provide information such as design and manufacture, wingspan, speed, crew capacity, armament, dimensions, ship or vehicle type, and other special features.
The book begins with Episode I, The Phantom Menace with each of the first three episodes getting their own chapter while the original three films are combined into the last chapter. In addition to the data files, a host of other information is provided on each vehicle as well. Text keys with map lines are drawn to each, pointing out important features of each vehicle. These are about the next best thing to the actual ships blueprints. The detail is simply amazing! On the Naboo Cruiser for example we see where the fuel tanks and fuel lines are located, along with coolant ducts, deflector shield projectors, sensor arrays and even mundane things such as the crew lounge and locker areas. These allow the reader to get inside these massive vehicles and ships and almost take a virtual tour through them.
Get up close and personal with Jango Boba Fett's heavily armed Slave I ship with its blaster cannons, laser cannons, missile launchers, and mine layers. Other ships included from the episodes I to III include Padme's Starship, ARC -170 Fighter, General Grievous's Wheel Bike, Pod Racers, and Palpatine's Shuttle.
The final chapter dealing with the three original films has certainly the most popular ships for fans including the Millennium Falcon, AT-AT Walker, Jabba's Barge, and Darth Vader's Tie Fighter. Several of the major ships and vehicles get fold out sections that provide four full pages worth of data. Chief among these is the first Death Star. The Slave I makes a second appearance here that includes the modifications made by Jango Fett's son, Boba.
Hats off to DK Books for also profiling the two artists whose brilliant work is on display here, Hans Jenssen and Richard Chasemore. The detail and effort that went into these drawings is truly phenomenal. This is one of those items that is tailor-made for the hardcore Star Wars fan, a reference tool that can be consulted over and over again.

5 stars for COMPLETE Cross-sections!!.......2007-08-23
People should get Star Wars Complete Cross-Sections.
Here are three reasons why anyone who likes Star Wars should get this book.
1. Star Wars Complete Cross-Sections includes information about ALL six episodes in one book. It's great to have it all in one volume instead of four separate books (Episodes I, II, III, and the Trilogy).
2. Star Wars Complete Cross-Sections has extra content not included in the separate volumes. The Imperial Shuttle, the RZ-1 A-Wing, and the B-Wing Star Fighter are new material in the combined book.
3. Star Wars Complete Cross-Sections is jam-packed with large full color illustrations and tons of fascinating facts. The pages are crowded, but the information is great.
The Star Wars Complete Cross-Sections book rules the galaxy and any Star Wars fan would just love to have a copy. I checked it out of the library, but now it's on my Christmas wish list!!
My 5 year old loves it!.......2007-08-11
I purchased this for my 5 year old because he loves Star Wars. We have a couple of other Star Wars guides. He loves the cross section book because "it shows all the ships and details and that's cool". He loves finding something small that I would have missed. Great book for all ages.
Not What I Expected But Great Nontheless.......2007-07-05
Don't know why but I was expecting technical drawings of the Star Wars vehicles. Instead I get beautiful drawings of the vehicles and some of the characters which was an unexpected plus. Especially for scale comparison with some of the bigger vehicles. The reason this item dose not get five stars from me is because when reading the book things can get somewhat confusing there is so much info on each page it practically spills out from the sides. I would recommend it to anybody who wants more information on their favorite Star Wars vehicles!
Star wars.......2007-06-09
My son has not put this book away since we bought it. It goes on every car ride with us, and even to school for free time reading. The pictures are beautiful. He absolutely loves it.

A thousand years from now, someone might find a dusty collection of DK's Star Wars titles buried in a library vault and wonder at the ancient strife, fashions, and droids of this unusual, unmarked era in history. For one who didn't know this was a series of film characters and situations being analyzed and explained, it would be an extremely believable history resource. For those who do know, it's a fantastic reference guide for all things Star Wars. David West Reynolds's impressive scientific writing style renders this "visual dictionary" a veritable bible of intergalactic information related to Attack of the Clones, the second prequel to the original Star Wars trilogy. The most intricate details of the characters, creatures, and equipment of the film are revealed in crisp, annotated photographs and authoritative text. We see, close-up, the meltproof Ceramoid mesh of a scouter's pack; the traditional Ansata pattern on Jedi Jocasta Nu's tunic, symbolizing knowledge and learning; and the alarming features of Poggle the Lesser, ruler of the Stalgasin hive colony of Geonosians. Star Wars fans and future anthropologists alike will be wowed. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description

Great book for the Star Wars fans.......2006-03-13
My son and his friends are big Star Wars fans. They are all between the ages of 5-8. They loved this book. They really enjoyed finding out all the details in the movie. While my son watches the movies he looks up and reads about the movie. It is a great book. Lots of fun...
Very Good Book.......2005-07-08
This book is very informative and it gives a lot of background information on characters that many star wars fans wouldn't know about. I am a HUGE star wars fan and this book is not a waste of money. There is a lot about Coruscant and the droid foundries of Geonosis. I learnt alot from this book, and it is ideal for any star wars fan's library.
Indispensable.......2003-12-25
For a Star Wars Fan, it is a must. However, as I described in the other books of this series, it has missing the starships pictures, but is is not a major problem, since the book depicts all hardware and aliens that appear in the film.
My Padmae, Haven't You Grown........2003-09-11
The Visual Dictionary of Ep2 once again gives us a more detailed review of the charcters from Ep1 and the arrival of new stars such as Jango Fett and his young cloned son, Boba.
However the best parts of this book is the development of Obi wan, Annikan, and of course the accidental [physcial] symbol of the new Star Wars generation, Padmae Amidala, executed in purfect form by Natalie Hershlag-Portman. Her now famous white combat suit is complemented by her other eyepopping outfits...Very nice.
A must for those who are keeping a library on this epic tail.
Star Wars Episoce II: Attack of the Clones -- The Visual Dic.......2003-03-06
Actually my son loved the book but it fell apart as did all the similar Star Wars books. (He is not hard on books, our pop-up books all survived his early years intact.) I bought a copy for the library at my son's elementary school and that one fell apart too. These books are to expensive to have the binding be so shoddy.

really good artbook.......2007-08-23
lots of sketches on environment, and outfits for the queen, its really cool art book to collect
Amazing amount of design work.......2007-01-06
Sometimes is easy to forget the amout of design works that takes to make a star wars movie, with lots of designers hired trying to get the ship, landscape or character design that fits into the visuals and story of the movie.
This book gathers lots of artwork, focused on the Star Wars Attack of the Clones movie and will satisfy both old and new star wars fans for sure.
Awesome book (and prequels) no matter what some say........2005-05-26
The first time I really started Really liking Star Wars was with The Phantom Menace. Personally, I don't go in for the dissecting crtisicm kind of thing. So Yea, there may be a some flaws, but to me there was more right than wrongs.
So about this book; I am crazily into art, and my copy of this one
is starting to look worn out. It is an amazing collection of conceptual art (drawings, paintings, digital designs, ect.) arranged chronologicaly paralleling the script. I believe that when
I started studying the works of Iian McCaig, Dermot Power, and others; my ideas and artwork really took off, and seeing the quality and height of what I wanted to reach laid out inspired me
greatly. Well, in all, this book is brilliantly executed and would be awesome to look at for any Star Wars fan or art fanactic.
The best "art of Star Wars" book.......2004-12-12
Ok, I'm right now too short on words, but I have to say something... the Art of Attack of the Clones book is the best one in the series... probably the best designed one and the most comprehensive, containing images and descriptions, AND in the other section the full movie script. This hasn't been done before, adding several points to the book. The other books in the series only had or the descriptions or the script.
Great, diverse artwork. I just hope that Art from Revenge would be as nice as this one.
I Wish I had a Witty Title, but I Don't..........2004-01-24
I was hyped up for Episode 1 only to be let down by one 3-worded mistake: Jar Jar Binks. Of course, if you've read my review for The Art of Episode 1, the you know that I still thought well of that book, despite certain Gungan monstrosities. The Art of Episode 2 proves that the Stars Wars films are like leftovers from dinner, they just taste better and better. Aside from showing the reader sketches of returning locations (Such as Tatootine, Naboo, and Coruscant), it also expands on these locations by showing us things like Coruscant's lower levels, and new areas of Naboo. Added to this is artwork for two new planets in the Star Wars universe: the dry and desolate Geonosis and the watery and storm-shrouded Kamino. Also there are sketches of a certain army cloned from a certain bounty hunter whose son captured a certain Han Solo. If you're a Star Wars addict then get this book as soon as humanly possible because the only Art of Star Wars book better than this will probably be The Art of Episode 3.

Why Hasn't Anyone Else Reviewed This Book Yet????.......2004-01-24
Some of you might not be aware of this, and some of you might be: I am a cross-sections addict! If there was a cross-sections book on something as meaningless to me as the insides of a toilet, chances are that I'd be interested in it. That said...after reading Inside the Worlds of Episode 2 I can't help but wonder why no one else has reviewed this. I mean, it's not like it was released a few days ago. This has some sights in it that are, in my opinion, simply incredible. The Clone Army's training center alone was worth buying this book. The book even lays out events like the ending battle in the movie and routes taken during the speeder chase on coruscant. There's stuff in here that was never mentioned in the movie (even in the deleted scenes), and it's stuff that makes the world of Star Wars just come alive in its own way. Now, Mr. Lucas, once you're done with Episode 3, how about making a movie where you give a tour of these locations?

A good addition to your 'Star Trek' library..........2007-07-20
Susan Sackett makes no apologies as she not only tells the reader about her contribution to the 'Star Trek' franchise, but her love affair with Star Trek creator, Gene Roddenberry. (And, for the record, she has no need to make any apologies).
As one who probably knew him best, Miss Sackett was one who kept Roddenberry on track (or at least attempted to) in his creative life, as she offers little tidbits of how she was there when the original series went off the air, up to the inception of 'The Next Generation' and the films...(And Miss Sackett would write a few books based on the original series, and show up as an extra in a 'Next Generation' episode 'The Neutral Zone' in the blue skirt and go-go boots uniform).
As a personal inspiration to Roddenberry, Sackett gives us a portrait of Roddenberry, who was definitely a flawed human (as we all are in some way), and was kept afloat somewhat by her presence as he endured ups and downs while dealing with 'Star Trek' productions.
As one of the other reviewers mentioned above, a good read for those in love, and those very much interested in 'Star Trek'...
Gut Wrenching and Haunting Story of the Price of Fame.......2003-05-31
This is not a biography nor is it an autobiography. It is a unique kind of document.
It is Susan Sackett's story and it is the story of Gene Roddenberry's final days, showing the roots of those final events within the years of Star Trek The Motion Picture, and Star Trek: The Next Generation and the deepening and developing intimacy between Susan Sackett and Gene Roddenbery.
Susan Sackett has taken an odd point of view to tell this story of her position in the world of Star Trek. As a writer, I have to admire the tight, disciplined writing.
The story she tells is searingly gut-wrenching, harrowing and filled with anguish dotted with moments of joy and happiness.
It haunted (still haunts) me day and night for a number of reasons.
As primary author of the Bantam paperback Star Trek Lives! and a professional sf/f writer active through those years in Star Trek fandom, I was aware of these events but from an entirely different perspective. This book has filled in the blanks and answered many questions for me.
During the intervening years, I have likewise been aware of the private lives behind the scenes of several very famous and popular writers who ended their days enmeshed in very similar kinds of situations.
Reading this book awakened the feelings of watching such events from the sidelines, helpless to affect the course of things. It also brought home how very ordinary such an extraordinary situation is among the famous and powerful figures of this world.
Sackett's writing style is factual, the language prosaic, completely devoid of purple prose, hyperbole, or passion. And that showcases the realities of this happy/sad situation that surrounded Gene Roddenberry as he fought to give the millions of dedicated fans the show they so richly deserved.
The point of view is entirely Susan Sackett's. These are the events behind the miraculous achievements of Gene Roddenberry, and this is what it felt like to be involved inside those events, and this is the enormous price Roddenberry paid to give us this miracle.
Not once in this narrative is there any speculation, accusation or finger-pointing. There is no blaming, no "flaming" and no attempt to present the motives of others which Sackett could not possibly have known except as supposition through a veil of emotion.
This document is an amazing piece of work, a tour de force of the writer's craft and a bit of history that may one day prove invaluable to researchers if enough copies survive here and there. Put one away for your grandchildren today.
I can't tell you that every word is true. I can tell you that you will not find a more objectively written account of a purely subjective experience anywhere in your public library. Just for that achievement, this book should be studied by every would-be writer. And while you're studying this book, do tally up the price of fame and the cost of glory and ask yourself if you really do want to be a writer after all.
Live Long and Prosper,
Jacqueline Lichtenberg...
The best insider book I've ever read.......2003-05-27
Susan Sackett's unique perspective brings new insight into Gene Roddenberry, the amazing creator of "Star Trek" who changed the face of filmed sci-fi forever. Their love story is touching and heartrending, and Susan's personal influence on Roddenberry's inventiveness has never before been revealed. Susan is a remarkable woman who has lived a one-of-a-kind life that's both fascinating and inspiring. I'd recommend this book to anyone who's ever seen "Star Trek" - or ever been in love.
