Book Description

99 Ways to Tell a Story is a series of engrossing one-page comics that tell the same story ninety-nine different ways. Inspired by Raymond Queneau's 1947 Exercises in Style, a mainstay of creative writing courses, Madden's project demonstrates the expansive range of possibilities available to all storytellers. Readers are taken on an enlightening tour-sometimes amusing, always surprising -through the world of the story. Writers and artists in every media will find Madden's collection especially useful, even revelatory. Here is a chance to see the full scope of opportunities available to the storyteller, each applied to a single scenario: varying points of view, visual and verbal parodies, formal reimaginings, and radical shuffling of the basic components of the story. Madden's amazing series of approaches will inspire storytellers to think through and around obstacles that might otherwise prevent them from getting good ideas onto the page. 99 Ways to Tell a Story provides a model that will spark productive conversations among all types of creative people: novelists, screenwriters, graphic designers, and cartoonists.

5 out of 5 stars You Don't Have to Love Comics.......2006-11-10

I couldn't disagree more with the reviewer who dismissed this clever, funny, and insightful work as boring and unworthy. OK, it's NOT great literature and there are certainly more scholarly books out there to read if you want to work on enhancing your creativity, but let's not be snobbish about this: the book is a fast, fun read the first time through and delivers even more rewards when you go back to it. Madden is a talented cartoonist, and his purposeful imitations of the styles of other famous cartoonists is used to great effect in some of the exercises.

Did this loosen me up and make me more creative? Am I now ready to write the great American novel? Well, not yet. But it has gotten me thinking about new approaches to plotting and characterization, and I think that's the whole point. Thanks, Matt!

3 out of 5 stars Once again, I shake my head at an alleged "masterpiece".......2006-03-22

The promo copy states that 99 ways to tell the same situation may seem boring but, guess what--it is. Repeatedly. The book's copy (and any discerning reader knows that a copywriter never lies to sell product) has said that this book has found a broad audience, which implies that if so many people got snookered into buying this book (many of whom were undoubtedly required as a course requirement) it must be worthy. "99 Ways" has allegedly received wide-spread praise on the Internet--well, what more needs to be said? Such a level of mature, intelligent discourse is not to be discounted easily.

No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people? Once upon a time, would-be writers turned to the great masters to find the elements of style that suited them, that were worthy of emulation. To do this, they had to READ--and still do.

But now, "graphic novels," which are merely highbrow trade paperbacks--substituting as lengthy, more expensive comic books with literary, psychological, allegorical pretensions--are gaining in popularity in inverse proportion to the drop in consumers' attention spans.

I subscribe to the old saw: if you would create good or even great work, then read or view (i.e., books, articles, essays, movies, plays) examples of the same as widely as possible.

If you are a would-be comic book or graphic novelist writer/
artist, then this book may serve you well, especially if you are a young adult.

Otherwise, save your money. They are no great secrets to be gleaned here. But there are great many other works that will help new writers gain tips on craft. Most, unfortunately, have far more text than pictures.

5 out of 5 stars Great for teaching and learning about comics, and well priced.......2006-02-19

I teach comic art at the California State University, Fullerton and in workshops. Matt Madden's book is the best I have found to present complex ideas quickly about form in the language of comics. "99 Ways" is a perfect tool to showcase how your visual storytelling would function if you used, say, a close-up vs. a full shot, a vertical panel vs. a horizontal one, or if you used a specific genre, such as film noir, manga, and so on. People studying comics get it right away. They appreciate the strengths and limitations of each approach and device Madden presents, and his examples make the point better than long verbal discussions! What I also found very attractive is the very reasonable price (one that most students can afford). Combine it with McCloud's "Understanding Comics" and you've got a power punch of a combination for learning and teaching comic art (these two books complement each other perfectly).

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2006-01-22

I need to preface my review with this: I am not usually
a comic-book-reader. It is not that I don't appreciate
the art form, I simply never really think about comics
nor do I consider graphic novels among my preferred
genre.

I picked it off the shelf without looking inside, I
thought, "Hmmm, perspective - let me check this out"
as I had just taught a writing workshop using different
perspectives and was astonished to find the insights,
awarenesses and "a-ha's" the exercises had upon
my students.

Well, they haven't seen anything yet in comparison to
what they will be able to connect with upon experiencing
Madden's brilliance in this simple book.

This book would be excellent for people whose job includes
telling a story - it would also serve and be beneficial
for those who are wanting to increase in problem solving
ability and think differently.

One of the intriguing bonuses is learning a lot of new
words (like "Emanata" - a purely comic book term - read
the sources in the back for a complete definition.)

As a creative person, it opens up all sorts of different
approaches, thus inspiring the reader-creative-maven to
approach their art differently....which is the
foundation of any life or artistic growth and
transformation.

The first word I scribbled on my page as I was reading
this volume was "Brilliant!" and that summarizes this
book perfectly.

Brilliant!

NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW
When low-life moneylender William Weems is found murdered, there are few to mourn his passing. But when Inspector Pitt finds a list containing the names of some of London's most distinguished gentlemen in the murdered man's office, he recognizes the smell of blackmail. Fortunately, Pitt's clever, well-born wife, Charlotte has entree into London's best society. 4 out of 5 stars A Victorian feast.......2006-08-21

I would not typically pick up a mystery novel like this, but needing something to read on the plane returning from a visit to my mother, I decided to borrow this from her. It was quite an enjoyable read. The details of Victorian life, well-developed plot line and believable, sympathetic characters show that Ms. Perry is quite a skilled story teller. Men will find the descriptions of ball gowns and hair-do's a bit tedious, and the ending is overly abrupt, but all-in-all this book is well worth the time invested.

2 out of 5 stars My least favourite Pitt book........2005-05-23

Out of the ten Pitt books I have read so far this is the one I like the least! My main objection is the long tedious sections involving charlotte's social outings. Nothing happens for page after page. This can happen in other Pitt books as well I find, but this one is the worst. Anything in this series from The Whitechapel Conspiracy onwards is very good though, as is Traitor's Gate, Bedford Square and Farrier's Lane. (Everyone else here seemed to like this book except me).

5 out of 5 stars The best in the series!.......2004-07-25

I've read all 23 of the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt books, and this entry has more than any other of what we love Anne Perry for -- the beautifully drawn descriptions of high and low Victorian life; the interweaving of Charlotte's family's goings-on with the main plot; wonderfully realized secondary characters; etc. In Belgrave Square, we learn for the first time of the deadly secret society known as the Inner Circle, which will return to haunt Charlotte, Thomas, and their families in future books. The main police business at issue -- who blew the head off nasty userer William Weems -- is slightly over-the-top, if undeniably dramatic; but it has several rivals for the reader's attention, including the compelling romance of Micah Drummond and Eleanor Byam (very touching and believable) and the love triangle of Fanny Hilliard, Fitz Fitzpatrick, and Odelia Morden. Thomas and Charlotte themselves continue to grow in interesting ways; here, Charlotte is forced out of her happy-married-woman complacency, learning a new sympathy for the travails of others even when they are not particularly likeable people. There's even a fascinating lesson in colonial economics tucked away in all the plotting and subplotting! But the capper of the book for me is the delicious encounter between Lady Vespasia and Lily Langry at an upper-crust garden party. Every time I reread it, I'm impressed anew by Perry's ability to set a vivid scene and draw her readers into the absurd but deadly serious etiquette games of another time and place.

5 out of 5 stars it's my favorite book of the Pitt series so far.......2003-09-28

I've read the 11 "Pitt" books prior to this, but I enjoyed this the most.
Some thoughts:
-It's not necessary to have read previous books in the series to find one's way around the characters and setting.
-The book is populated with interesting characters.
-Our friend Micah Drummond also plays a noteworthy expanded role.
-Most important for a mystery like this, the ending needs to be satisfying. And did I love this ending! (No peeking!)

4 out of 5 stars Another Adventure With The Pitts.......2003-09-14

This is another installment in the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt series. I've read most of them and always find them entertaining and enjoyable. As with most series, the characters become familiar and the development of their lives from story to story is a large part of of what makes these books fun to read. Beyond that, the books are also good period pieces. Perry's exploration of social mores and class barriers is well done. Her weakness is that her plots are often somewhat transparent. BELGRAVE SQUARE is no exception. For me, the "hidden relationship" that lies at the core of this mystery was pretty clear long before the end. The final scene was dramatic, but the relationship thus exposed was long anticipated.

Perry's tales are, in general, fun to read and BELGRAVE SQUARE is a solid entry in the Pitt series. Her characters are engaging and her handling of the social and historical background are very competent. Her plot, too, is sufficiently involved to hold the readers interest. All in all, another good effort and I recommend it. My only caution is that, if you're looking for a really baffling whodunit, this might not be it.

4 out of 5 stars Early McGarr mystery focuses on Nazi art thefts........2005-02-09

In the fifth of his sixteen Peter McGarr mysteries, author Bartholomew Gill is still finding his niche. Though he is using the same police characters from the Garda Siochana in Dublin with which he began the series (in Death of an Irish Politician), he has not yet begun to concentrate on their quirky personalities, their humor, or their often hilarious interactions. In terms of his plots, he has yet to discover the charm of using strictly Irish settings and intrigue, as he does in his later novels, concentrating instead on Nazi art thefts in France during World War II and the party bureaucrats who conveyed impressionist masterpieces to Nazi collectors.

When Henry Craig, a Dublin art and antiques dealer is found shot to death near his showroom, Peter McGarr and his investigators first concentrate on his business associates, his schizophrenic French wife, who may have seen the murder, and Craig's son, with whom he has had a recent fight. Soon, however, McGarr finds that Craig's own staff has some strange connections, with direct ties to the IRA. The theft of a priceless Alfred Sisley painting brings McGarr's art conservator wife Noreen into the investigation, and the war-time activities of Craig's wife and his partner, along with the paternity of her son, come into question.

The mystery is complex, with the author needing to provide a good deal of background information about the Nazi Occupation of France in order to connect the plot elements. Several additional, intricate subplots keep the reader challenged with even more characters, interactions, and complications. Violence, stories of atrocities, brute force on the part of McGarr and his staff, and the suggestion that one of the Garda higher-ups is protecting IRA members keep the plot firmly focused on the sensational. None of the humor which characterizes Gill's later novels is observable here, and Noreen is included primarily as an expert on art, rather than as a humanizing factor for McGarr.

Gill has obviously done considerable research on art, conservation, and Nazi history, and he incorporates it well. Since his first novels, his plots have grown more complex, and his hand seems surer as he manages his characters and juggles details. His descriptions are beautifully drawn, and his ability to recognize and promote those elements which keep the reader interested is obvious. He is still a developing novelist here, however--a very good one whose full talents finally burst forth in the eighth book in the series, Death of a Joyce Scholar. Mary Whipple

                        Book Description

"We see Sissy Hicks as the Alice Waters of Vermont," says Michael Stern" - relying on local farmers and greengrocers, cooking meals that reflect the seasons, and creating a menu that is at once respectful of tradition and yet always surprising. . . . This cookbook is one that cooks will turn to for ideas for Sunday dinners, company's-coming meals, candlelight suppers, and leisurely family breakfasts on a weekend morning. And it will be a book that readers will want to curl up with by the fire on a winter's evening."

The Dorset Inn, a special-occasion extraordinarily romantic restaurant, is a destination for those who go through southern Vermont to ski and sightsee. People honeymoon here, have anniversary meals here, and come to the Dorset Inn to get away from it all.

The Dorset Inn is a place rich with historical association with the very beginnings of America and American cooking. It was on the Dorset Village Green that the Green Mountain Boys prepared for battle in the Revolutionary War and just down the road is Arlington, where Norman Rockwell created his most beloved paintings.

Elegant Comfort Food from the Dorset Inn not only celebrates the history of the inn and the spirit of America found in New England. It also is a practical cookbook containing recipes founded on a tradition of hearty portions, clarity of flavors, and transformation of leftovers into glorious meals, but refined and elevated.

This book is part of a series of books that has been coming out now for many years. They consist of an article section, a trends in cutlery section (with lots of artfully done photos, and a directory section of the cutlery collectible trade and custom makers, etc. I have the whole run and look at them now and again for reference.

                        4 out of 5 stars Knives 2001 Goes Hollywood.......2000-10-30

Well, not really but I was disappointed with the advertising inserts in this year's issue. It detracts from the overall usefulness of the book. The Knives series are reference manuals in my opinion and the semigloss Junglee insert and the "Marketplace" advertisement was a bore.

The B&W photos of the knives are nice as usual and even with a new editor (Joe Kertzman) at the helm the book still seems to retain a lot of Ken Warner's flavor.

This year's articles are interesting though not as much as last years issue. I particulary liked the article by Mastersmith/Wordsmith Ed Fowler. Man, does that guy know how to write about knives. He can make 'em, too! It is nice to see Bernard Levine and Butch Winter back again this year.

The Trends section placement of photos are A1. There are some stunning knives there like Jerry Fisk's damascus bowie and Tom Johanning's survival knife. How do these guys do it? There were many other great knives there. Too many to list, though. Check out the pocketknife section. I would love to own anyone of them. Dan Burke's work is just out of this world as is Richard Rogers.

The factory trends section is very good this year with a nice variety. Some excellent knives there also like the Benchmade Mel Pardue Axis lock and the reemergence of the Marbles knife co. Missing in my opinion is the knife/bargain of the year. The MicroTech LCC design by Greg Lightfoot--an exception tactical knife built like a tank and priced most folks can afford.

The directory gets bigger and bigger each year and I like that. The Knives series books are the first I turn to when I am checking out a new maker. The directory includes a state-by-state listing along with the alphabetical listing, a knife photo index (smart move) and a plethora of other specialist ranging from sheathmakers to engravers and etchers.

Knives 2001 is the number one knife reference book to have this year. Overall I am really pleased with it and each year seems to get a little bit better sans the advertising pitch.

I highly recommend this book. A must for any knife nut! :-)

While there are several origami books on the market, many are out-of-date, most are either too hard or too easy, few offer traditional projects, and fewer still provide all the elements needed to create, store, and display beautiful orgami pieces. The kit contains:

                        * A 96-page book with complete instructions for 45 different projects
                        * 162 7x 7-inch sheets of folding paper in an array of color including patterned and foil sheets
                        * A sturdy box that doubles as a place to store paper and a pedestal on which to display finished projects.

Simple and easy to understand diagrams make this the perfect origami beginner's book. The addition of an abundance of origami squares in a range of different colors plus a load of two different patterned squares sets an origami novice up for folding for quite a while. I highly recommend this book to the new origami folder.

This is a very visual account of the life of one of the greatest decorators of our time. Billy Haines started out as a silent movie actor and when he refused to keep his sexuality in the closet he was fired, forcing him to change careers - and thank goodness. Schifando & Mathison take us on a journey, via photos, sketches, and other images, through the life of Haines and the evolution of his personal style. His classic interiors, which often included a touch of chinoiserie, a unique custom lamp, low chairs, quilted fabric upholstery, and other unique pieces will never go out of style.

Being an admirer of nearly all things vintage Hollywood, I was most eager to read a book on this almost forgotten silent screen legend. I was most impressed by the great detail on the man, his loves and hates and his metamorphosis into a highly successful interior designer in later years. The thoroughly entertaining anecdotes throughout also kept me interested until the very end. It gives the reader an insight into a period in Hollywood that has long since been buried by time and our bizarre fascinations with the likes of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton et all.

A must read for any reader of the good old days of Hollywood.

4 out of 5 stars BIG TOME. BIG TIME MOVIE STAR. BIG TIME DECORATOR.......2006-10-16

Part-time P'town resident William Mann's Wisecracker was the first (and definitive) bio of Haines, on of the silent era's greatest stars and one of its first certified heartthrobs. But Haines was gay---something eh refused to hide---and when MGM honcho fired him. Haines began a new (and much more lucrative career) as a self-taught decorator. His work graced the homes of Joan Crawford, Marion Davies, Constance Bennett, and mega-watt socialites Alfred and Betsy Bloomingdale an d Walter and Lee Annenberg; even in his death in 1973, Haines` legacy followed, with his associate Ted Graber in charge of the décor of Ronald and Nancy Reagan`s private riddance at the white House. This coffee table book is the price of a good steak dinner (with wine), but the hungry of film fans and stylists and interior designers will long be satisfied by the intellectual text and more than 300 vintage and rare drawing, illustrations and photos.

4 out of 5 stars Well written partial bio of a sexy guy and his adventures.......2005-12-15

                            Hi, Everyone,

Gavin Geoffrey Dillard first came to my attention when I saw Track Meat, a gay guy porn film of the late 1970s. He was billed as Gavin Geoffrey in that movie. He writes about how that film came into being in this book.

Gavin also shows the reader how that film made him famous enough to be pursued by many admirers on the streets of west Hollywood. Those pursuers included some rich and famous types. Gavin hints at who's bed he shared and occasionally drops some names that we know very well.

Gavin has been a poet and a world traveller, but he also did a few on camera appearances after Track Meat. A lot of the book is about Gavin's spiritual beliefs and those people he met who were into various ideologies. Any reader who finds Gavin to be attractive from his photos or films will find themselves getting jealous of so many lucky guys who enjoyed rendezvous with him in bath houses and gardens and film sets. Some of his most intimate partners had no idea he had starred in a porn flick.

After spending time with some of Hollywood's biggest producers, Gavin went back to being very available for low cost and sometimes free activities.

He also seems to have done well at cooking, gardening, writing and acting onstage.

This is an interesting read for the most part. I was not as interested in the religious meanderings as some might be. I did find his UFO sightings to be believable. I really liked what he said about his experience with AIDS.

I liked the book and would recommend it. I also recommend his video of Track Meat if you can find it. I will probably buy more of his books.

Gavin was a Rob Lowe lookalike before Rob Lowe, so maybe Rob is a Gavin lookalike.

If you like the book about Gavin, you will also like the books about Joe Dallesandro.

1 out of 5 stars Bombastic self aggrandizement.......1999-12-04

A bit part player in gay porn who says he has slept with everyone in Hollywood and trys to make his story sound grand and mystic. He is no more than a misguided glitter boy who can't find his way in life and can't grow up. He would lead you to believe that he has all of the answers and more talent than the legends. Poor writing and a story that I couldn't finish.

                            5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary........1999-05-02

Rarely have I witnessed such openness by a writer. This book is a high-water mark for the human spirit and testimony to the fact that its radiance will shine if left unfiltered.

Whatta breath of fresh air this was for my closeted spirit yearning to be as free!

Some questions: I was perplexed by the turnaround on Tom in the last paragraph of his chapter. Tom and his truths seemed like a great touchstone for the author. What are the markings on Gavin's last picture? Are they the wax burnings from his trysts with Race?

What erotic, delicious portrayals of sexual attractions and fulfillment. This guy can write and illuminate.

One of the most liberating, good-feeling books I've read. My human experience has been broadened--only if vicarioiusly. I am emboldened to live my life more "in the flesh".

Such a life is a boon to us all and surely has moved far along on the path to fulfillment.

5 out of 5 stars A well written account of an interesting life in progress........1998-11-05

Gavin Dillard is best known for his poetry, nicely drawn, evocative, and sometimes haunting. In his autobiography, of life so far, he brings many of these same qualities to his prose, together with an engaging wit. He takes his reader from his brief but successful career as a gay porn star, to a lucrative career as an escort, which led to an exciting long-term-relationship, and on to his search for self in poetry and Asian religion. The LTR finally became an obstacle to the publication of this book because the mogul believed he was too readily identifiable and brought in legal bottom-feeders to keep a major press from releasing it. But, it's here! The journies to self-hood through Asian religion will be appealing and accessible to any reader who has made that trek, or even contemplated it, but it is likely that other readers will find it more difficult to get into than the rest of the book. Still, it would be worth the effort. Dillard is still evocative and articulate as he continues his inner quest, and the wit never quite dies on it, a rare achievement.

5 out of 5 stars Witty, often absorbing with immersions in Asian religion........1998-10-28

The book, often witty and absorbing, could have been called "Gav Does It All." Dillard describes his brief but successful career as a porn star, escorting, a longer term relationship, and his self-validation through a return to poetry and immersion in Asian religion. The porn star experience and escort life have been described before, but rarely with such fresh wit. His ltr turned sour and, by his tell, the other guy managed to keep his book out of print at a major house by tying it up in legal knots, presumably because he could be identified easily by others in the Hollywood set. There is no question but that Dillard writes well. His earlier poetry contained some finely turned verses and some haunting passages. In this book, he shows us once again that he is a wordsmith, in a different form. True, the excursions into Asian religion will leave readers who have not gone down that road somewhat baffled because Dillard is less successful at taking his readers through these inner experiences than he was at keeping us with him as he did it all.
