4 out of 5 stars A Dilly of a Story.......2007-01-09

Herbalist and sometime sleuth China Bayles is in a tizzy. The daughter of her best friend Ruby has turned up on her doorstep pregnant and needing a place to stay. Her husband had decided to make a career change and become a private investigator.
His first client is Phoebe Morgan, the Pickle Queen of Texas. She suspects an employee of cooking the books and hires McQuaid to follow the money. Just before Picklefest kicks off, Phoebe disappears. . .

Another great China Bayles mystery. If you're not already a fan, you will be by the time you've finished!

5 out of 5 stars Another great addition!.......2006-04-18

Albert manages to get another great book! This was enjoyable as expected. Although many people have complained about the bad pickle jokes, I thought it was rather funny - after all, they admit they are bad and just add to the overall fun. A murder mystery can always use a little humor to keep it from getting too depressing.

5 out of 5 stars KILL DILL.......2006-02-18

The herbal detective, China Bayles is back and she's in a pickle this time. China and best friend Ruby are on the board that stages the annual Picklefest in Pecan Creek. The event is lorded over by the pickle queen herself, Ms. Morgan, and when she gets offed, the pickle juice flies. Hubby McQuaid is tired of his boring life as a teacher and opens his own PI service, and Ms. Morgan is his first client. She believes one of her employees, Vincent, is fixing the books. So there's a plethora of suspects once again. Add to this the arrival of Amy, Ruby's just discovered daughter, at China's door, announcing she is pregnant and needs a place to stay. Seems like the father of Amy's baby may be involved in the murder too---until he turns up dead!
Wow...fans of the series will love this worthy addition to the China Bayles series. Ms. Albert knows how to combine her herbal expertise with good mystery plotting. A dilly of a book.

5 out of 5 stars Dilly does not disappoint.......2006-02-02

This series is one of my favorites and I love going back to the Texas hill country with each new installment of China Bayles' intrigues. I like getting reacquainted with China's friend and partner, Ruby. The other characters in the book don't disappoint either. Interesting facts about pickles and pickle making are included throughout the book, with recipes at the back. Ms. Wittig gives us well-written cozies with a modern flair.

4 out of 5 stars festivals galore.......2004-12-19

Albert's herbal cozies star China Bayles, a former attorney who now owns and runs Thyme and Seasons, a shop in Pecan Springs, TX. Dill is herb of choice in this installment. China is helping get ready for the annual Pickle-Fest, when Phoebe Morgan, the Pickle Queen, disappears right before the big event. In the midst of this McQuaid is trying to open a PI business...but Phoebe was his first client, and now she's missing. Not to mention that China is letting Ruby's wayward daughter stay at her place, since things seem to be difficult at home for Ruby and Amy. The suspects, friends and family wend their way through your heart while you hear about new and unusual ways to bring dill into your life. The jokes are pretty sour.....

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars A good Read.......2007-09-03

This was the first book in this series that I have read. It will not be the last. Great story line. Gives one the feel of being there.

      5 out of 5 stars Great start.......2006-06-16

This is an excellent start to a historical mystery series featuring Gil Cunningham, an aspiring lawyer in 1492 Glasgow, Scotland. While Columbus was discovering America, Gil is looking for suspects in the brutal stabbing of a woman who was a member of a traveling troupe of musicians. Since Bess Stewart was killed on church property and Gil finds her body, his uncle the Canon decrees that he should investigate her death. Bess also was the estranged wife of a powerful local landowner, and before Gil can cross the street, the number of people who would benefit from her death are crawling out of the woodwork and he has more possible murderers than he knows what to do with!

While I did guess quite early on who the culprit in the mystery was, I very much enjoyed the author's ability to set you right in the midst of the historical place and time. Another strong suit is an excellent ability to provide well-fleshed and interesting characters. Gil, his uncle, their housekeeper Maggie, the Master Mason who assists Gil in his inquiries and the mason's daughter Alys all felt like real people. Even the transient characters--the murder victim and the suspects--were more developed than the main characters of some series I've tried to read! The author made you care about them all and what happened to them.

I don't know why these books were not published in paperback here in the States, because if this one is any indication, it's an excellent series. I will be looking for more in the series very soon!

5 out of 5 stars Happily, this is the FIRST Gil Cunningham mystery.......2005-05-21

This is an accomplished mystery with a strong sense of history and character. The writing is quite polished, especially for a first novel.

The setting is Glasgow in 1492. The intriguing adventures of the young lawyer, soon to be priest, allow the reader to view a wide section of Scotland - servants, nobles, impoverished gentry. The story touches on points of Scottish law and the intricacies of marital finances, the travels of young scholars, the mingling and separation of lowlander and highlander.

There was a cast of interesting and likeable characters that I look forward to meeting again. The only disappointment is waiting for the second book.

4 out of 5 stars Very good but be aware of omissions.......2003-04-14

This book is indeed much shorter than Principia, mainly because it is derived for lecture notes for a 1 semester PhD course. It is also a lot clearer than PM. But the notation is largely the same, which makes for hard reading if your are under 50. Quine's proof format doesn't take up much space, but has always eluded me. This book contains the best treatment of truth functional and quantificational logic prior to natural deduction and truth trees.

I like the set theory of this book, but I warn you that it is very nonstandard. Even ardent lovers of Quine's NF theory hate
the ML theory of this book.

The weakness of this book is its treatment of metatheory:
consistency, completeness, decidability, categoricity. The treatment of Godel's incompleteness is detailed and highly original (altho' it owes more to Tarski than to Godel). But it is very difficult, and Smullyan (1991) is much better.
Quine also had no clue re model theory or recursion.

I respect the historical remarks a lot. Just one big omission: Quine, like nearly everyone of his generation, missed that
math logic as we know and love it does not descend from Frege, but from an 1885 article by C S Peirce.

5 out of 5 stars In Depth Look at Logic.......1998-12-01

Try this book when you know a bit about the basics of logic. The descriptions are much more lucid than those in Principia, even if the ideas are less earthshattering for there time. Quine, as he always does, gives a masterful, detailed look at logic. If you are a fan of logic and the foundations of math, this book is not to be missed.

      Book Description

Clay Williams is an ambitious Lead Systems Engineer who's worked hard to establish his career and highly regarded reputation at the company. His relationship with his family, however, is deteriorating because of frequent business travel and endless hours at work.

While quail hunting in the woods of his Uncle's farm, an unexpected encounter leads him to Hartwin, a quaint little town along the Missouri River. During his visit, Clay finds new hope by discovering the fragility of life and family, and the timeless influence of choice through the lives of those that lived before him.

The journey leads him full circle—back to the woods where it all began.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable!.......2006-03-17

Clay Williams' life is falling apart. His marriage is a bit rocky. His children are growing up without a father due to his job. Clay gets to relax very few weekends and when these are come around, he likes to go pheasant hunting on his uncle's property.

One year nearing the Christmas holidays, Clay is out shooting pheasant with his old trusty hound dog and runs across an old cemetery. He sees apparitions and hears voices of the children. Upon checking the graves, he finds something a bit disturbing--all the graves are marked with similar cherubs and a statement: "Gone but not forgotten."

As Clay explores a little more, he is informed by the ghost of the young girl that one member of the family is missing. Clay sets out to find out what happened to this person, and on his journey he learns a very important lesson.

This was a very quick read.

Armchair Interviews says: A very enjoyable, ghost story set at Christmastime to bring the spirit of the season around to a family that had almost forgotten the meaning of being together.

      5 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2005-07-14

This book has a very important message on re-evaluating your priorities in life. It is well written and hard to put down once you start reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Reviewer won't soon forget Gone But Not Forgotten.......2005-04-24

"Mr. Wilmes has penned a book that the reader will not soon forget. His characters are real and believable. With attention to detail and vivid descriptions, you are drawn into the book that not once wanes in keeping your attention. Reading this book gave me chills and will forever touch my heart. Don't wait till Christmas to read it!"

      5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable.......2005-02-05

What a wonderful book! The author perfectly sets the scene of rural Missouri, yet the story has relevance for anyone who has ever found their relationships strained by the demands of modern life. I found myself identifying and empathizing with the realistically drawn characters. Yes, I did cry at the end. This moving, elegant story can easily become a family Christmas tradition.

5 out of 5 stars Walford died of ALS.......2006-02-03

Actually, in spite of his plan to live to 120, Walford died of ALS, or Lou Gherigs disease, a genetic neuromuscular disease. No diet can counter that! But this does not discredit him at all. And no one can predict or guarantee longevity, but only attempt to maximize health and longevity. Caloric restriction does just that.

4 out of 5 stars In answer to the slanderous reviews on this page........2004-02-05

I researched information on Roy Walford's health condition and found that in fact, his inability to walk and speak is not due to his diet but to an experiment in which he took part. The February 2000 edition of Discover magazine sites the following quote as the source of Walfords illness:
"A chronic nerve disorder--which he picked up nearly 10 years ago as a volunteer guinea pig in a surreal ecosystem experiment".

Plus I was unable to find anything as reference below regarding an article published by AARP.

Please check, and double check, your facts before decrying another person's efforts to find viable health alternatives.

1 out of 5 stars Walford is Dying! -- New York Times 11/23/03.......2003-11-24

In case you are about to buy Walford's book and practice Caloric Restriction as preached by him, consider today's (Nov. 32, 2003) New York Times article by David Hochman which reveals that Walford is dying.

According to Times story, "By almost anyone's standards, Dr. Roy L. Walford is an old man. At 79, he is confined to an electric wheelchair and his voice is so weak, he speaks into a microphone wired to a small tabletop amplifier...Dr. Walford...is..dying..."

If you really want to retard aging and extend your lifespan, why model yourself on a failed anti-aging guru? Someone who is prematurely dying?

Don't be conned by the uncritical reviews by Walford's little sect of true believers.

Check out The ImmorTalist Manifesto: Stay Young & Save the World" on Amazon. This is not a diet book. But it will lead you to The Elixxir Program.

Elixxir has been called "the only anti-aging guru who has actually stayed young." (Investor's Business Daily)

So if you're like me, you would rather model yourself on an anti-aging guru who's not prematurely old and dying, but one who has stayed young!

The Elixxir Program cuts out all the needless puritanism and self-deprivation and abstinence from wine, etc. in Walford's regimen. And leaves in what is scientific and what works.

P.S. Walford's condition is sad and tragic. But it is absolutely unethical and probably legally liable for him to not reveal this in his books. So that you can take it into consideration. So your choice is Walford or Elixxir?

1 out of 5 stars The Shocking Truth about Dr. Walford - AARP Exposé.......2003-09-18

I want my money back! Dr. Walford touts himself as an anti-aging guru. But I am shocked to discover an exposé by the magazine of the American Assoc. of Retired Persons (AARP). The article pointed out that this so-called anti-aging guru who claims he will live to 120 cannot even walk in his seventies.

Walford is a total invalid! And I checked the old mail on the CR (caloric restriction) list and discovered many members of the list were shocked when that story came out.

Dr. Walford should have had the decency to give us a FULL DISCLOSURE of his physical condition in this and his other book, of which this is a rehash. So we can decide whether to buy his books or not. I would not if I had known.

He claims of course it has nothing to do with his interpretation of how CR should be done. But I am not at all persuaded. I have concluded he is doing CR wrong. And that we follow his prescription at our own risk.

It's obvious many of the "rave" reviews here are from a few members of his small but very cultic mailing list. They will never tell you this shocking fact -- that their anti-aging life-extension guru Dr. Walford cannot even walk! That he is doing worse than most seventy-somethings who shovel down all the calories!

Well, I feel totally deceived. And stunned! I want my money back! This is completely unethical. It is deceptive advertising to say the least. Go to AARP website and find that article in their archive or ask them for it. And read for yourself about Dr. Walford's shocking physical state.

4 out of 5 stars Great introduction, difficult recipes.......2003-07-31

The authors give an excellent argument in their introduction. In my case they are preaching to the converted; I have been using a low calorie diet for twenty years or so.

I've never followed one of their recipes however. They are not too complicated but often mention ingredients that I've never heard of. In several recipes I've seen them using Spanish words instead of the English equivalents.

The recipes are interesting, sometimes imaginative, but never inspiring.

I have most of the books in this series. My parents are aging and I have been looking for items that I can make for them which will have a long shelf life and would require them to do minimal food preparation, yet still have a 'home cooked meal'. The recipes fit the bill for the most part. In each book I found that there were a few recipes that are great and some I wouldn't try at all. This is what I usually find in any cookbook. I would comment that each book only has about 25 or so recipes in it. The rest of the pages consist of 6 copies each of pre-made instruction cards to enclose with each food package. I did feel disappointed in the number of recipes for the cost of the book

5 out of 5 stars Ingredient amounts are fine.......2006-11-17

This is a delightful looseleaf notebook full of recipes to be packed in a jar. It's important to use the wide mouth jar as this allows some extra room for packing. Narrow mouth jars don't work. On some of the recipes, the ingredient amounts add up to 5+ cups, but, because they are packed, they fit snuggly in the jar. You don't want the ingredients to lose their layered look, so it is important to pack them down. These recipes are nice and trustworthy. The looseleaf element allows for adding/ removing pages. The book comes with some rafia and fabric for tying the tops of the jars. Highly recommended. Have fun.

1 out of 5 stars Measurements incorrect! DO NOT BUY THIS! .......2005-12-01

This book presents a great gift idea. Pour the ingredients for muffins into a 1 quart jar, then decorate and give as gifts where the receiver only has to add milk and eggs and put them in the oven to get perfect muffins. This book has great recipes but don't think you are going to fit them into a quart jar!! Everybody knows that a quart is four cups. Most of these recipes call for 5-6 cups of ingredients! You do the math! I have a dozen bottles that I bought for this.

SAVE YOUR MONEY! Don't buy it!

Whether they’re drawn to the traditional or the innovative, the plain or the flamboyant, woodturners can expand their horizons with this storehouse of inspirational images and ideas. The emphasis throughout is on showcasing graceful and well-proportioned work, along with examples of usually overlooked styles. More than 100 pieces appear, arranged around ten basic themes: combining different woods for interesting contrast, achieving surface texture, producing paired or grouped items, incorporating other materials (such as rope or leather), fashioning the hard angles of squares and rectangles, exploring exotic woods, turning plywood, laminating work, doing off- center turning, and creating simple shapes and forms.

141 Pages. Full color photos of turned objects, usually one per page, type of wood and size for each object. Not much text, a "picture book". I have used this book a lot, much more variation than in single artist books. Contents: Bowls, Containers (Boxes), Bottles, Vases, Hollow forms, Closed forms, Natural Tops and Natural Edges, Platters and Plaques, Variations in Shapes.

Over the past 50 years, Pottery Barn has developed a reputation as a home furnishing chain with its own distinctive, elegant designs. Intended for both the serious re-modeler and the aspirational dreamer, Pottery Barn Bathrooms does a thorough job of explaining the elements that make a bathroom comfortable and stylish enough to serve as a private retreat or communal spa. Each of its ten chapters is devoted to a single subject (fixtures, lighting, color, windows). After a quick overview of basic issues related to each topic, readers are invited to tour spectacular bathrooms through luscious photos and text explaining the color palette, room plan, and materials used. While the rooms tend toward the high end in terms of materials and available space, there's a wealth of useful advice throughout that would be welcome to almost anyone looking to spice up an existing bathroom or planning to build a new one. --David Bombeck

2 out of 5 stars Scant resource guide.......2007-09-08

I bought this book because it has the exact look I want for my bathrooms--traditional bridge faucets, vintage type toilets, white tiles. I got few ideas for my dressing room layouts. But where s the resource guide for all those wonderful faucets? I don't think Pottery Barn sells those? I agree you'd get the same info and design inspiration from their catalogs. Not very practical.

4 out of 5 stars Not practical, but very inspiring.......2007-01-24

I just got this book and I have to say that I really enjoy it. That being said, I do agree with some of the negative reviews here also, insofar that people are unhappy with amount of practical ideas it presents. I would say, if you are remodeling your bathroom and are looking for a how-to book, decor-wise, then this is probably not the book for you. But if you just enjoy getting new design ideas and just being creatively stimulated, then you should definitely purchase this - the imagery is gorgeous, and it has already given me loads of ideas for my own house as a whole. So: not perfect, but still worth buying!

1 out of 5 stars Pottery Barn store.......2005-08-21

This book is like walking into the Pottery Barn store, so this should be a catalogue instead of an ideas book. Lots of white. The bathrooms are comfortable looking, but not very original. I got more out of Japanese Bath book than this one.

1 out of 5 stars Worse than their catalog--there's nothing you can get .......2005-03-16

This is my first review, but I have to let other people know what they are buying.
We are building an addition which includes a master bathroom and a half bath. My husband is a industrial designer and I'm a graphic designer, so we are designing them ourselves. We also subscribe to Metropolitan Home magazine, so our sense of design is up to date and we know what good looking bathrooms are(designed by well known and expensive professionals)
I've bought several books at Lowe's and borrowed some at the Library. Since there is no pottery barn store where I live, I ordered it online. Big mistake. It was even worse than the Pottery barn bed & bath catalog. The bathrooms pictured in the book are all huge. Most of them are as big as the master bedroom. And I agree with another reviewer, no typical tub or shower. In order to get those look, you should expect to sepend at least $40000(material and labor) if you have the space. Although it looks good, people don't recommend hardwood floor in bathrooms(even worse with freestanding tubs!). Color schemes look all the same, woodworks are all white, You'll get few ideas from this book. There's no examples of half bath or powder room. The products in the examples are mostly pottery barn, and there's a section on how to buy furnitures for your bathroom. I'm going to try to return this book if they accept.

Please don't buy this book, go to your local library instead.

4 out of 5 stars Best of the Pottery Barn books.......2004-08-27

I have read/used three of the Pottery Barn books listed in order of my opinion of them: Baths, Living Rooms, and Bedrooms. Baths was very good, with beautiful photographs, interesting and innovative ideas, and some useful design advice. Most of the book provided a several page showcase for an individual bath with discussion of what made it special.

Living rooms was OK. It's content was more canned, but it still had some inspiration and enough ideas that were useful that although I would not put it amongst the best such books, it was worth an hour or two to browse.

Bedrooms hit the bottom of the list for me. The content seemed especially canned. The ideas were not fully developed and most of them appeared to me more appropriate to someone's first apartment than an established home (so it just needs the right audience?). Lot's of the pictures involved just using eclectic pieces and did not involve actually developing a decorative theme.

                Book Description

Few Hollywood directors had a higher profile in the 1930s than Frank Capra. He served as president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and of the Screen Directors Guild. He won three Academy Awards as best director and was widely acclaimed as the man most responsible for making Columbia Pictures a success.

This popularity was matched by films that spoke to and for the times---It Happened One Night, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and Meet John Doe. These replicated the nation's hopes and dreams for a national community. He worked with some of the brightest stars in Hollywood---James Stewart, Clark Gable, Jean Arthur, Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwyck, Claudette Colbert, Bette Davis, Donna Reed, and Ann-Margret.

Capra's interviews express his connection to the national audience and explore his own story. He was a Sicilian immigrant boy who survived rough-and-tumble beginnings to become Hollywood's most bankable director. In reflecting his life, almost every one of his films was a parable of acclaim verging on disaster. He spent much of the 1940s in uniform while making films for the War Department. Although Capra was an optimist, World War II and his series of Why We Fight films called his legendary optimism into question. His postwar film It's a Wonderful Life (1946) gave an answer to those questions with an astonishing directness Capra never equaled again.

In 1971 he published his autobiography, The Name Above the Title. Many of the interviews collected here come from this period when, as an elder statesman of motion picture art and history, he reflected on his long career. The interviews portray the Capra legend vividly and demonstrate why the warm relations between Capra and his audiences continue to inspire acclaim and admiration.
