wonderful women's fiction.......2007-06-09
My daughter picked this book out from a Christian Bookstore shelf, because the cover and title looked and sounded interesting. We have lived both in Europe and in the U.S., so any story set in Europe (esp. Paris) will quicken our interest.
I had misgivings about the Tuscany part, since I didn't want a knock-off of Under the Tuscan Sun. But I was quickly swept into the story, although it seems to be the second of a series. It didn't matter. It was easy to sort out the characters and where their lives were at at this point in time.
Whitson is a wonderful writer. She knows how to get you into the mind of both the 20-something, as well as the 50-something (?) protagonist. Even when the one behaves badly, you're rooting for her. Wonderful novel about relationships, great descriptions of the food. I spent my junior year in Paris and visited a friend spending hers in Florence, so this took me right back. I could just picture the areas Whitson was describing.

It was a great book! If you want to read it though, I would suggest reading the firrst one, A Garden in Paris. The book had a great mixture of all kinds of things, romance, drama, a little mystery. I loved it! Amazon shipped it really fast too! Read it!
The author rises above most other romance novelists........2006-07-02
Because of all of Whitson's historical fiction series, I became a fan of her writing. She is one of the better writers of our time for historical fiction that grabs the reader's attention, emotions, and mind. Although I'm not thrilled with romance novels, especially placed in modern times, I decided to read this book and the first one of this series because she's a good author. Indeed, it is a good read, but I still like her historical fiction better. That's more my individual taste rather than a not-so-gushing review of this book series. Truly, her writing is still excellent, and she packs good research into the creation of the text. These are quite a bit more religious than her other books.
Softly romantic tale that pulls readers in.......2006-06-24
In this sequel to A Garden in Paris, Mary is happily enjoying her newfound life in France and the friendship of two extraordinary men. Luca Santo rejoices to hear of Jean-Marc's new faith, but it smashes against the love Luca is beginning to feel toward Mary. Jean-Marc and Mary loved each other once. He cannot stand in the way of their happiness now.
This beautifully written novel begins slowly, relying on the realistic and relatable characters to pull readers in. And they do. You sympathize with Liz feeling torn between her past and future, Mary's hesitant mothering of her independent daughter, and Luca's decision to step away from the one he loves. While several subplots could be removed from the story without being missed, they add to the richness of the tale. A terrific sequel.......2006-03-31
So many times, sequels are painful reads as it seems the author has run out of steam. Hilltop is not a disappointment. If you've read A Garden in Paris (which I highly recommend) you will not be disappointed with Tuscany. It captured my attention, and I enjoyed the story, the growth of the characters, and another plot twist I did not expect. Both books are lovely reads. The only problem is, I now want to go to both Paris and Tuscany! The author paints lyrical word pictures of places and events that make you hunger to be where the characters are and living life with them.

I found this a perfect book for a busy weekend. Never one to be without a book, I was intrigued by the title and decided to give it a try. I enjoyed my find. The doctor and Mrs. Doyle have a very believable relationship and I like the way Dr. Fenimore studies his subjects and reports to the reader. The calmness of his personality is infectious. Nice quick read.

OK book. My interest was the discussion of Indians (uh, Native Americans) in of all places, New Jersey. I appreciated a plot that linked this group of people with the PA Main Line. I figured out the ending too early, which was a drag, but I'd like to read more from Ms. Hathaway.
Doctor digs a grave.......2000-04-25
I am a big fan of Agatha Christie. I have read almost all her books. Finished reading her work makes me both satisfied and dissatified at the same time. I am glad to find someone with similar style of writing here. I really enjoy the main character's sense of humor and the author's way describing her characters. I have a very clear picture of what they are like. however, comparing to agatha christie, there is still some way to go.

Count me among the handful who thought this book was perfectly dreadful. It's written in the prose of an eighth grader. I finished it, but only because I was on a plane and had no other books with me. My advice is to pass on this one.
Totally engrossing read!.......1999-11-11
Bravo Robin Hathaway! I could not put this book down and took it with me everywhere until I finished it. The characters in Hathaway's first novel are likeable and engaging. At first I was a bit apprehensive about a doctor and his young sidekick, but Hathaway pulls it off beautifully without falling into that formula one might expect with a mentor/student type relationship.
The plot moved at a very enjoyable pace with just enough character development to keep the read hooked.
I can't wait for the next Hathaway novel.

I bought this book to try to lose some weight. I have followed it pretty much for three months now and have lost 13 pounds. I am blood type O, so I am not supposed to eat wheat, dairy, or citrus. I am supposed to eat some meat too. Since I live in a small community, some of the products are difficult to find such as wheat/gluten free products and nondairy alternatives. I do not eat red meat, but only a little chicken and fish also. I think it does work, but you need to exercise too. I feel very good on this diet and am seeing a big difference in how my clothes fit. Nothing works overnight though!

I have been overweight (about 50 pounds) since the birth of my two sons. I have tried everything! Some things worked but I would always gain it all back and then some....that was Until I found this book!
It is not a strict diet but instead a lifestyle change. It is so much easier than a diet and is something you can do for life and not feel like you are sacrificing.
You eat the foods that "go" with your blood type and don't eat the foods that don't! It is that simple. AND the "Don't Eat" food list is very small compared to what you CAN eat.
It is fabulous. I have been on it for two weeks and have lost 8+ pounds!
GOTTA GET IT!
***UPDATE**** been on it for a month now and have lost 15 pounds and feel fabulous! It will clear up any bowel problems you have (diarhea, constipation, gas, bloating) which is a huge plus.

This book was recommended to me and since adopting it's suggestions, I have lost a total of 130 pounds and kept it off. All of my allergies have completely gone away. I am no longer athsmatic. I have a fantastic amount of energy! I no longer have heartburn, constipation or sleep disturbances; things which plagued me all of my life. I would encourage purchasing the book in hardback, as a large section in the back is recipes... I would encourage you to try it- and if it looks dificult, take it a few steps at a time: do what you can do, then adopt stricter practices when you are ready. Everything in the book has been tested scientifically, although not with a human test group. It's not a diet, it's a new way to live! Once you go off of it, all of your problems will come back. I NEVER THOUGHT I COULD EVER FEEL SO FANTASTIC!!!

Cheescake Rookie.......2003-05-20
I love to make desserts, especially cheesecake but before I bought this book I had only attempted 1. Now I can't stop making them. I thought the book provides good directions and has a lot of helpful hints on the right and wrong of cheescake making. The only negative is that there are only so many recipes and those are limited. But on the flip side I think this book provides a good foundation for branching out to try your own recipes.

I listen to Joey Reynolds radio show out of Fresno (we live in the Sierras up north) and have heard him talk about cheescakse for months. And my family likes cheesecake, especially tofu and other lower fat types. Like Reviewer Lori Baltazar from Manila, Philippines it is surprising that a cook book lacks photos of what an item might at least look like.
Thus this isn't a cheesecake cookbook that I would recommend for anyone other than a cook who knows their way around a kitchen and has some major self confidence and has made cheescakes from other recipes from other books.

I had high hopes when I bought this cookbook simply because it bills itself as THE ultimate cheesecake cookbook. Heck, I bought it without even browsing through it! It's easy enough to read: directions on how to make a perfect cheesecake, pointers to remember, etc. There are also sections for baked, non-baked and other people's favorite cheesecakes. The book's drawback is that it has NO PICTURES - not one (save for the one on the cover). For a cookbook especially, pictures are what urge and inspire the reader to try the recipe. Secondly, the recipes for the no-bake cheesecakes are (almost) the same as the baked ones. No fair! Do buy this book if you're just starting to make cheesecakes -the book will be a good guide. But if you're familiar with making cheesecakes, this book will only bore you with its lack of variety.

Maybe I looked at a different book than the previous reviewer. This is dynamite. It's obviously great for model makers, but I like it just for the reference info and the photographs. Couple this with Drury's Guide to North American Steam Locomotives and it's a great reference set.

This is a good overview of mostly standard guage steam engines. There are some good drawings that could be used to create or enhance an engine model. There is very little information on narrow guage and none on two foot guage engines.

Good For Pen and Ink Fans.......2002-01-02
Colored drawing inks can be a beautiful and expressive medium for artwork. While the most common pen and ink works are in India or sepia ink much can be said for stepping outside these boundaries. This book, first published in Japan (and thus bi-lingual - both Japanese and English), gives a good overview of creating work in both traditional black pen and ink as well as colored inks. Subjects range from serious to whimsical and cartoonish. The first half of the book covers supplies, surfaces and the various types of pen, brush and marker strokes. Then each page gives examples of black pen and ink work along with examination of the type of strokes used to create the finished piece on the opposite page.
The second half of the book covers colored ink work. Many of the same techniques used for black pen and ink pieces will work here. Techniques such as wet-in-wet, smooth gradations, spattering, scraping back to white, hatching, cross-hatching, etc are discussed. Much of this will be familiar to anyone who has worked in watercolor. There is also a discussion of effects that can be obtained through use of a photocopier as well as discussion of reproduction concerns. Over all this is a good introduction to pen and ink with the added benefit of colored ink discussed too.
