Faux pas?.......2007-03-12
As the author of this series, I of course enjoy reading praise of my books, but critical remarks frequently provide me with amusement of another kind. The review that forgives my "small faux pas" of having Joliffe at Lord Lovell's confrontation of the villains because no lord would have a "lowly servant" present at such a time tickles me, because would Lord Lovell really be fool enough to confront the villains alone, without -- in modern terms -- back-up? (He's not a gothic heroine, after all.) And for the sake of damage-control -- limiting who knows what about a nasty situation that could only get worse, the more widely it's known -- who better to have with him than the person who has clued him in to what has been going on? Besides, there were gradations of servants as well as of other ranks; Lord Lovell had used Joliffe as a specialist in the matter, rather than as a plain, all-purpose servant, so "lowly" doesn't seem quite appropriate anyway. Not to mention what Joliffe would say about being called "lowly"!
A Nasty Family.......2007-01-13
The story here is so ugly that we find ourselves ready to wring everybody's neck once we get an inkling of what may be happening in the household where the players come to exercise their craft. However, the storyline is magnificently developed by the author and the characters appear true to the period and their various personas.
The lessons Bassett, the playmaster, imparts to Gil (the new troupe member) are priceless, particularly with the thoughts of his own beginnings with the company that they evoke in Joliffe. Not true to life is the ending, when Lord Lovell asks Joliffe to join him when confronting the family of evil doers. As a mere lowly player, no lord would ever involve him in such event! However, how else would Ms. Frazer let us know what happened? So... I forgive her for that small faux pas.
Altogether a good story, but less of a mystery than her others and definitely a dark downer.
A PLay of Dux Moraud.......2006-11-02
A gently thoughtful tale about a 15th century troupe of players in England, A Play of Dux Moraud probes into what it takes to be good player and a good person. The levels of acting and being within a player or a person make a man a genuine hero, a skillful actor, or a hollow coward. This novel richly entertains as it leads the readers to a deeper reflexion on the complexities of living.
History and Mystery at its best........2006-07-14
Margaret Frazer has created another first-rate mystery series. The historical period is beautifully created and meticulously researched. This author is one of the few who is capable of creating a truly complex mystery and a believable cast of characters. I enjoyed A PLAY FOR DUX MORAUD very much.
A destitute playing troupe . . . ........2005-09-26
The destitute playing troupe of performers made up of Joliffe, Basset and his daughter Rose, her son Piers and her love Ellis, had a stroke of very good luck. After years of traveling the countryside hoping for a few coins that would allow them to survive, they come under patronage of generous Lord Lovell. Their prayers had been answered, thought the actors. The only request Lord Lovell made was that the troupe takes on Gil Densell, the young son of one of Lovell's bailiffs, as an apprentice. How could their generous patron be denied such a small favor?
Lord Lovell added to the troupe's good fortune by providing them with a very good job. The son of Lord Lovell's landholder and daughter of his friend, Sir Edmund Deneby, were to be married. The troupe was asked to go to Deneby Manor and perform as a betrothal present for the young couple. And while there, Lord Lovell says, "I wanted to be able to call on your wits if need be."
The bride-to-be was recently betrothed to another man - a man who died under suspicious circumstances shortly before the wedding. And her current marriage seemed rushed. Lovell wants to know what is going on behind the scenes.
While at Deneby Manor and during the readying for the celebration, the actors had a warm dry place to stay, good company and regular, meals. All considered luxuries to the once struggling actors. Joliffe, who was very popular with all who lived at the manor and the townspeople, found it easy to gather information about the Denebys.
Not hard to uncover was the evident distaste the promised bride and her mother, Lady Benedicta, had for each other and the wall of ice that stood between the bride's parents. Other mysteries, however, are harder to unravel.
The story is slow to start, but the delay is well worth it. Frazer holds your interest with deftly drawn characters acting in a stage of intricate and accurate details of medieval life. The author's attention to the factual events and trimmings of a performance troupe from that period, add to the delight of the story.
As the book ends, the answers to the mysteries are exposed and answers that one would never imagine appear.
History and mystery buffs alike, will enjoy A Play of Dux Moraud.
Book Description
Matthias Fitzosbert, illegitimate son of a parish priest, has a unique relationship with Rosifer, the fallen angel—the spirit he loves yet hates, strives to placate yet ultimately must flee. The story of Matthias is played out against the vivid panorama of the Middle Ages—the fall of Constantinople; the last throes of the Wars of the Roses; the terror of witchcraft; the loneliness of the Scottish marches; the battlefields of Spain; and finally, the lush jungles of the Caribbean, where the Rose Demon and Matthias meet for a final deadly confrontation.

What's the real mystery?.......2007-09-01
This book reads as if it was a good short story, ruined by several hundred unnecessary pages of boring dribble, in as much as it is based on only one idea rather than a gripping plot. I just didn't care that much for the main character, and everytime yet another catastrophy would befall him, I just rolled my eyes back in my head and thought "come on, get to the point". Even the fact that P.C. Doherty reapeats stock phrases to describe people and events throughout the book seems to suggest that he had run out of original ideas long before the pages stopped turning. The only real mystery here was how does a book this bad get published?
MEDIEVAL ADVENTURE AT IT'S BEST!.......2005-12-24
I love a good medieval historical read - especially if it is not just a mystery but filled with adventure. Filled with a demonic aspect that gives it a great dark edge. The description of warfare keeps it at a thrilling pace. First book I read by Doherty but not my last.

Further mutilation of Greyhawk..........2000-05-04
The World of Greyhawk is one of the oldest worlds for fantasy roleplaying. It has a depth and interest to it which is totally unseen in this book. There are far better books based on AD&D - try Elfshadow by Elaine Cunningham for one of the best. Actually, come to think of it, almost all of them are better than Rose Estes' Greyhawk books. Of more interest to AD&D/Greyhawk historians is the GORD THE ROGUE series by Gary Gygax - occasionally badly written, but the ideas make up for it!
Third book of a four part series.......2000-02-06
The third installment of the adventures of Mika. His hand has been mutated (if I remember correctly) by the demon Maelfesh. This is a one-of-a-kind series with a lot of original ideas and many interesting characters.

Book Description
“I feel that I can do the best, most profound things and life is short. How I wish I was living in an age when man wanted to raise temples to man or God or the Devil.” Jacob Epstein was thirty when he wrote these impassioned words. Now recognized as a seminal figure in the history of twentieth-century art, his powerful and often explicit sculptures, monumental in scale, were hailed as the work of a genius by a few contemporary figures such as Ezra Pound and Augustus John, but produced hostility and censoriousness from the art establishment. His is a true rags-to-riches story. Epstein was born in 1880 in the Jewish Ghetto of New York but emigrated to Europe to live a bohemian life, with a wife and several mistresses in a domestic menage. By the time of his death in 1959 he had met almost everybody of importance in the art world and many in political and other spheres. He endured public scandals caused by the nudity of his so-called Strand Statues (1907-1908; destroyed 1937) and the debauched-looking angel on his 1912 memorial for Oscar Wilde, but in 1946 he modeled the portrait of Sir Winston Churchill and was himself knighted in 1954. It is a comment on changing tastes that Epstein’s magnificent carving in alabaster, “Jacob and the Angel,” once refused by the Tate Gallery, now stands in the Central Sculpture Hall of Tate Britain. His sculpture, drawing, and other work are to be found in museums and art galleries all over the world. Daemons and Angels, the first biography in fifty years of this controversial sculptor, features black-and-white photographs throughout.

A Bitter Disappointment.......2002-08-03
I had high expectations for this book on master sculptor Sir Jacob Epstein as it was coming from the author of one of my favourite books, a biography of artist Suzanne Valadon. Sadly, it is a great disappointment. It seems a very sketchy biography at best, covering ground that has been previously explored by former Epstein biographers and presenting no new discoveries of its own. There are also major flaws in showing Epstein's humourous side such as his bizarre encounter with the eccentric Marchesa Casati. Casati is not mentioned at all, even though her bust is one of Epstein's masterpieces. Also, author June Rose completely leaves out any mention of the scandal that followed Epstein's death when castings were made of many of the artist's best works and sold as Epstein originals. Additionally, the illustrations are a badly selected lot, with not even a single photograph of the sculptor's spectacular tomb for Oscar Wilde in Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris. For the definitive biography of Epstein please read Stephen Gardiner's "Epstein: Artist Against the Establishment" or Epstein's own wonderful autobiography "Let There Be Sculpture". After such excellent work as the aforementioned biography of Valadon and her volume on Modigliani, I sincerely hope that Ms. Rose's next book returns her to the top of her form.
Product Description
"Jacob Epstein had a vision. "I feel that I can do the best, most profound things and life is short," he wrote when he was thirty, and wished that he "was living in an age when man wanted to raise temples to man or God or the Devil." Time would prove Epstein's artistic talents to be as grand as his creative passion. His powerful and often explicit sculptures, monumental in their scale, would eventually define and indeed epitomize his age - but only after years of controversy during which his work was criticized, condemned, and sometimes destroyed." "While Epstein is now recognized as a seminal figure in the history of twentieth-century art - a Modernist who was the first sculptor to carve directly in stone since the Middle Ages - the genius of his work in the early 1900s was recognized by only a few contemporary figures like Ezra Pound and Augustus John. Among the art establishment his work for the most part aroused hostility and censoriousness. So it was that Epstein endured the public scandals created by the nudity of his so-called Strand Statues (1907-1908; destroyed 1937) and by the debauched-looking naked angel that commanded his 1912 memorial for Oscar Wilde - but three decades later, he was modeling the portrait of Sir Winston Churchill and was knighted himself in 1954." In this life of Jacob Epstein, acclaimed art historian and biographer June Rose follows the course of the controversial sculptor's career from scandal to celebrity. She tells a true rags-to-riches story that takes Epstein from the Jewish ghetto in his native New York to a bohemian existence in Europe, where he set up a domestic menage with his wife and several mistresses, to ultimately the heights of artistic success. He formed friendships with Picasso, Modigliani, and Brancusi, and by the time of his death in 1959, at the age of seventy-nine, Epstein had met virtually everybody of importance in the art world and not a few luminaries in political and other spheres.

If you liked Willow and THe Princess Bride, you'll love this.......2007-08-02
Simon Hawke is the first author I really loved reading. This whole series managed to maintain a great adventure story and keep me laughing out loud.
Seriously, it's a quick, easy, read, and you'll wish there were more of this short three book series. You'll be glad you read it.
Inadeqate Adept; more than adequate book.......2000-05-29
This book is a very good read. Hawke takes a new look at a world that mixes magic with everyday life. The 'adventures' that Brewster gets himself into while attempting to get home make the story a quick and interesting read. The book was almost too short in that when reading the last page, i wanted it to go on, and on.

For Caesar Afficionados.......2006-04-29
"In Search of Caesar: The Ultimate Caesar Salad Book" is a neat little book about the history of Caesar Salad as well as adaptations made by chefs throughout the country!
Terry D. Greenfield is a restaurant consultant and columnist whose passion for Caesar Salad led him to penning this book.
This book was an enjoyable read. I loved reading of the history of this flavorful salad. Also, I enjoyed the adaptations of this classic dish as well. One of them was hysterical! Well, actually, it wasn't funny so much as it was designed to feed a lot of people. The first ingredient: 90 eggs! Yeah, right! I will make that one tomorrow. Not! ;-)
There are several black and white photos in here showing salads, menus, restaurants, chefs and the creator, of course, Caesar Cardini.
This book is great for true Caesar Salad aficionados. Others may not appreciate it as much.

My Review from SouthWest BookViews Summer 2005.......2005-09-03
When given the opportunity to review The Pottery of Santa Ana Pueblo I asked myself, as a researcher and collector of Native American pottery, why Santa Ana warranted a detailed and exhaustive study of its pottery production. After all, Santa Ana has produced very little pottery in the last century and is not very well known to the general public. But after reexamining the 2003 release of The Pottery of Zia Pueblo by Harlow and Lanmon (published by School of American Research Press) I found this most recent volume could easily be considered the continuation of that earlier work.
The necessity in analyzing wares from Santa Ana lies in the fact that the pottery of both pueblos, at least until about 1760, so closely resembles each other as to be nearly indistinguishable. Thus, to accurately define pottery from Zia (which has always been a prolific village) it is also necessary to define that of Santa Ana.
In the course of their research the authors say they were able to "(d)escribe the chronological sequence of forms and designs based on evidence that has not previously been utilized." To that end they trace the evolution of Santa Ana pottery from its early roots with a discussion of Puname pottery styles (c. 1450-1760) to the first pottery style identifiable at Santa Ana Pueblo (c. 1760) up to the end of pottery making for local use at the village (c. 1925), and through various revivals up to the present.
Pottery from museums around the world was examined and 300 vessels (more or less) have been illustrated in color, making this volume exceedingly thorough in scope and of enormous benefit to researchers and museum personnel. Organized chronologically, well over half the text appears to be intended for researchers and archaeologists, since collectors have limited access to pre-1880 pieces. The last two chapters will interest collectors most, because during the technical discussions of paste, temper and form (as well as at the rather monotonous litanies of design elements of each illustrated piece) the average collector's eyes will likely glaze over. Yet this detailed analysis is critical to the understanding of the fundamental differences that define pottery by period, style and village of manufacture. Certainly the discussion of the ceremonial break and associated path line in Pueblo pottery is invaluable.
The author's collective credentials are impeccable, and all are associated with the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe; Harlow and Lanmon as Research Associates, Anderson as Director. Harlow, who is a physicist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, is also one of the foremost authorities on pueblo pottery and has written or collaborated on more than half a dozen publications about Southwest Native American pottery. Anderson wrote All That Glitters (published by SAR Press in 1999) about micaceous pueblo pottery, and Lanmon recently authored When Rain Gods Reigned for Museum of New Mexico Press in 2002 (SBV Vol. 2/2).
The result is a nicely produced, large format hardcover with glossy pages and color photos; a beautiful-and informative-book that should become a foundation in any library, public or private, about Southwest Native American art. It is hoped the series will continue to encompass every pottery-making village or tribe in New Mexico and Arizona.

The Fourth Edition of Gardening Indoors: The Indoor Gardener's Bible has everything you need to know how to grow a bountiful garden indoors. It is very strong on new technology, including hydroponics and high intensity lighting. The section on plant nutrient problems, insects, spider mites and diseases, including fungus, are extremely informative and very complete. The appendix, glossary and index are very complete and easy to use. This book has always been a best seller for us, and with this new edition, the trend continues.

Good Stuff Inside.......2004-03-30
Since this is my first review, I will try and keep it simple and short.
I have a variety of books about gardeing and farming for both in and outdoors. Gardening Indoors takes what all of them have together and puts it in one book. Do not get me wrong, I have read, and I am sure others have too, books that are as good as this book, but I personally think this guy hits the nail on the head here.
With chapters covering everything from water to soil to all stages of plant growth and all sorts of pests you will deal with, you have a easy to read, and informative guide for getting yourself a nice garden growing. If you can read, you can read this book and understand it, its that easy.
I've already recommended this book to others by word of mouth, and now you know!

Book Description
As told by veteran entertainment journalist Marc Shapiro, the story of James Cameron is rich in history and as explosively entertaining as any of his masterpiece films. Cameron the youngster built toy rockets and submarines and displayed at an early age the drive to win at any cost. The Cameron legend has it that when a neighbor stole some of little Jim's toys, he sneaked into the boy's backyard and sawed through the branches supporting his treehouse. When the treehouse collapsed, Cameron's rival ended up in the hospital.Ever since that day, James Cameron has been leaving many of those who cross his path in a state of mental or physical disrepair. But his fanaticism and incredibly strong work ethic also win the respect of those around him, and inspire many to go the extra mile. The teenager who was awestruck by the visual power and special effects of Stanley Kubrick's groundbreaking 2001: A Space Odyssey and immediately decided to become a filmmaker, has grown up to be one of the very best. But at what cost? Those who would label Cameron a self-absorbed , egotistical maniac have plenty of ammunition to back up their claims. As early as 1984's The Terminator, cast and crew members took to wearing T-shirts with the slogan "You can't scare me....I work for James Cameron." Of course, the infamous director never really talks to co-workers on his sets, he barks at them in succinct soundbites. And he doesn't play favorites. Not even his franchise player, Arnold Schwarzenegger, got special treatment during the filming of True Lies. High on a crane and ready to film a scene, he reports: "I had to go to the bathroom read bad. Jim screams up to me, 'No you can't! You're a military man on a mission, would a real pilot land just to go to the bathroom?'"James Cameron: An Unauthorized Biography of the Filmmaker includes other revelations and insights:* how the idea for The Terminator came to him in a fever dream* how he fell overboard in love with actress Suzy Amis on the set of Titanic* how Cameron's antics drove several stars of The Abyss to near nervous breakdowns* how someone on the set of Titanic allegedly attempted to incapacitate the lovable director by slipping him, and the rest of the crew, the drug PCP

EGO MANIAC ON THE LOOSE.......2003-06-28
I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK ABOUT ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL DIRECTORS OF LAST 2 DECADES. JAMES CAMERSON IS AN EGO MANIAC, PERFECTIONIST, WORKAHOLIC,SLAVE DRIVER. HE IS SELF CENTERED AND AROGANT. HE HAS HAD 4 MARRIAGES AND FAILED IN EACH. HE ALSO IS A TALENTED, SELF MOTIVATED, INTELLIGENT, AND CREATIVE PERSON. HE SEEMS TO STRIVE ON STRESS, PRESSURE, AND CHAOS. THIS BOOK CONTAINS MANY INTERESTING AND AMUSING TALES OF HIS DARK SIDE (MIJ). THE TELLING OF HIM GOING DOWN IN A MINI SUB TO DO SOME FILMING OF THE WRECKAGE OF THE TITANIC HIMSELF IS IN ITSELF A GREAT STORY. THIS IS A MUST FOR ANYONE WHO LIKES TO READ ABOUT BEHIND THE SCENES ABOUT MOVIE MAKING AND LIKES TO READ ABOUT GOSSIP CONCERNING SO CALLED HOLLYWOOD STARS. THE AUTHOR HAS A REALLY GOOD READ HERE.
VERY RECOMMENDED.
Is he a psycho, or a genius?.......2001-12-09
This book is amazing. It explains all of James Cameron's movies, in detail. As well as the process he went through in making them, writing them, directing them, pre-production, production, and post-production. Not to mention the reviews critics gave the film, and it's popularity in the box office. And it explains his life and interest in moviemaking from the age of 10 to where he is now.
If you like this director, overall, well worth a read.......2000-03-24
I picked up this book over the week-end, and finished it in a day. Being "unauthorized" it is actually a very well put together piece of work. The author has obviously used alot of reference material (he quotes Starlog alot) but reinforces this material with his own cast and crew interviews.
Unfortunately the sections on the films that preceed "The Abyss" are relatively light reads. The section on "Aliens" does however bring in some very interesting details about the production that I have never seen in print before...it does not however go quite far enough, I put it down wanting to know more.
Overall 3 out of 5...this book could have done more with the earlier period of this directors career.
A very interesting book to read........2000-03-12
Over my life the "unauthorized" biographies are usually books with sorted details of sex, drugs and other scandals. Those books are usually a real turnoff for me. However, Marc Shapiro has written a book that I found both fascinating and enlightening at the same time.
What Shapiro gives you is an inside look at the Filmmaker who is responsible for films like Titanic, The Terminator, True Lies and Terminator 2. Read and learn how Cameron got his start working for another film genius, Roger Corman.
While this book leaves you to ponder the question of whether or not Cameron was the power hungry, controlling and manipulating filmmaker some have claimed or is Cameron just another Hollywood Movie flake or possibly the film industry's greatest genius.
The quick and interesting read makes this book a real pleasure. If you like to read about how the movie industry moves and shakes than this book is one you'll want to add to your collection. Overall an excellent job and well worth the time to read!
