Penzler Pick, August 2000: Winner of the prestigious Gold Dagger Award in the U.K. for the best mystery of 1999, this complex literary thriller may be one of the most satisfying suspense novels to come along in some time. Robert Wilson has written several political thrillers, most of which are set in West Africa, but they are, alas, largely unavailable in the U.S.
In A Small Death in Lisbon, the narrative switches back and forth between 1941 and 1999, and Wilson's wide knowledge of history and keen sense of place make the eras equally vibrant. In 1941 Germany, Klaus Felsen, an industrialist, is approached by the SS high command in a none-too-friendly manner and is "persuaded" to go to Lisbon and oversee the sale--or smuggling--of wolfram (also known as tungsten, used in the manufacture of tanks and airplanes). World War II Portugal is neutral where business is concerned, and too much of the precious metal is being sold to Britain when Germany needs it to insure that Hitler's blitzkrieg is successful.
Cut to 1999 Lisbon, where the daughter of a prominent lawyer has been found dead on a beach. Ze Coehlo, a liberal police inspector who is a widower with a daughter of his own, must sift through the life of Catarina Oliviera and discover why she was so brutally murdered. Her father is enigmatic, her mother suicidal; her friends were rock musicians and drug addicts.
The reader is treated to a wonderful portrait of Lisbon in the aftermath of the 1974 revolution that ousted Salazar from power, and the scars from that conflict are still close to the surface for the citizens of Lisbon, including Coehlo and his colleagues. We also see World War II in a slightly different manner from that to which we are accustomed--through the eyes of the Germans and the Portuguese. The pace of the book is leisurely but compelling as the events of 1941 and those in 1999 merge in an extraordinary climax. --Otto Penzler

Not bad.......2007-09-17
This was the first book I have read by Robert Wilson. Amazon recommended it to me as a frequent purchaser of books by Alan Furst. Wilson is not quite as good or evocative as Furst. The novel shifts back and forth between what appears to be a conventional murder investigation in the late 1990s in Portugal and the story of an SS officer who is sent to Portugal during World War II to procure wolfram (tungsten) for the Nazi war effort. There is little to like about any of the characters in this book, including the murder victim. Also, the book takes forever to establish the connection between the World War II story line and the more current one. That said, the book contains some surprising twists and turns. It keeps the reader's interest right up until the conclusion.
Outstanding Thriller.......2007-09-14
This is one of the best thrillers I've read recently and, to my mind, Robert Wilson belongs in the same league with Michael Connelly, John Lescroart and a few others. What makes this book so superior to so many others is that it nicely blends two complex plots which work their way to a satisfying ending. And in the telling, you learn a lot about some interesting things, such as the wolfram (tungsten) intrigue during WWII, where Portugal supplied the vital mineral to both the Nazis and the Allies. You'll also learn a lot about Portugese history over the latter half of the 20th century. The hero, Inspector Ze Coelho, is an outstanding character and the plot(s) are suspenseful, authentic and compelling. The ending is a bit of a surprise but Wilson really never telegraphs his punches. Also, thankfully, he avoids the convenient coincidences that other, less able, authors employ to advance their plots or to end their books. All in all, this was one of the best reads I've had in recent months. I think this is Wilson's best book. Truly a very satisfying and enjoyable book.
A Huge Work of Fiction.......2007-08-08
Robert Wilson's A Small Death in Lisbon is a fantastic World War II/modern era detective story. The cover of the book cleverly integrates the Nazi swastika into the buidling upon which sinister Nazi secret police shadows fall. Symbolically, the Nazi swastika interwoven into the buildings's windows represent the corrupt foundations of much of modern Europe.
Economic super powers such as Swedish retailer IKEA are tainted by Nazism. IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad admitted to being an ex-Nazi. Wonder where his seed money came from? Similarly, in A Small Death in Lisbon, the machinations of the Nazi banker span decades, from WW II to modern, post Salazar, Portugal.
Setting this story in Portugal, Wilson examines the truly global reach of World War II. Remote lands like Portugal became vital to the war efforts of both Allies and Axis. Wolfram, also known as tungsten carbide, is a hard metal vital in providing tank armor and armor piercing ammunition. Portugal possessed huge reserves of this material and its neutral/fascist regime of Dr. Antonio Salazar became coveted by the belligerent powers.
Wilson expertly interweaves the murder of a young child with modern day Portugese society. The liberal use of Portugese phrases, food and coffee descriptions and above all, the ever present "barbaric heat" of summer transport the reader to the scene.
This work is amazing and you'll love it.
The Little Phrases Uplift You.......2007-07-22
So good. Great story development. But it's the little things that keep you amazed and engaged with the writing. Wilson comes up with phrasing, character insights and quips that are so true and magical they shimmer on just about every page. You know you're going to stumble on one every so often, and they pull you along.
My thoughts about A Small Death in Lisbon.......2007-07-05
I love novels that have some historical value and a geography lesson. This international thriller had some of each and a rather unusual plot with lots of twists and turns. For a long time it was like reading two novels, flipping back and forth between them; but since it is a single book, I knew they would eventually converge.
On the down side there were a lot of foreign words that were totally unfamiliar. I am sure the story would have been better understood and appreciated if I knew them.
If you are uncomfortable with harsh sex and abuse you may not like this novel.

Fascinating, but ultimately frustrating, mystery........2005-09-09
Two different settings and time frames--the waning days of the Third Reich in Germany and Portugal, and contemporary Portugal, with some of the same characters--allow the author to overlap both a complex historical thriller with a traditional murder mystery in unique and fascinating ways. Klaus Felsen, forced to work for the Nazi SS near the end of World War II, is sent to Portugal to buy as much wolfram (tungsten) as he can get, to be used in the manufacture of armor-piercing weapons. He is also responsible for privately smuggling out a great deal of German gold and some stolen art when it appears that Germany will lose the war, a job made more palatable when he realizes that he and his partners can profit greatly in the years after the war if they are careful to avoid discovery.
All these details come into play when a young Portuguese girl, seemingly unconnected with any of this, is found murdered fifty years later in contemporary Lisbon. Inspector Ze Coelho is assigned to solve the mystery of her death, a death which eventually reverberates throughout Lisbon society, the émigré population, the police department, the federal Justice department, political parties past and present, and even the foundations of the present government.
If all this seems like a lot to take on, it is. Although the book is beautifully written with fully developed, imperfect, and quirky characters one grows to like and understand, fine and vivid description, and a fast-paced plot with something happening all the time, ultimately it is difficult to make all the connections required by the fifty year chronology of the plot. Although I worked hard at this, and thought I had succeeded as I approached the conclusion, the last twenty pages had me reviewing and revising everything I had previously observed about the possible motivations of the main characters. Surprising twists are expected in mysteries. This one takes complexity to new levels. Mary Whipple
Amazing historical thriller.......2003-08-24
This book is difficult to put down. Extremely well written with intriguing and taught characters, it weaves together two stories, one taking place in present day in which the murder of a young girl is being investigated and the other about a young businessman who's forced into the SS during WWII. The book follows this man to present day and you begin to see how the two stories, though seemingly not related, are connected. I highly recommend this book. The story is great, the characters are great, the writing is fine -- I could not put it down.
A must read!.......2003-01-16

Great story, but a poor choice of narrator..........2006-09-08
I was drawn to this story by it's title, since so few novels are released on CD about Lisbon. Having lived and worked there for about 15 years (before and after the 1974 revolution), I was very interested in the writer's ability to blend several decades of history with his story.
There are several sub-plots to keep track of as one listens to this tale of intrigue. I'm fluent in Portuguese, so I didn't have any difficulty keeping track of the characters; however, this could be challenging to the regular listener. I was disappointed at the poor pronunciation of every familiar place name related to Portugal however, and I couldn't help but wonder why Sean Barett wasn't coached before taking up this performance.
At 15 discs this is a long book; but I doubt any abridgement would do it justice. For a long car trip, this would be ideal.
As an aside, the the "Palacio de Condes de Olivais"-the former German Embassy in the Lapa district of Lisbon was where I worked from 1976 until its abandonment. For over 25 years it served as the U.S. Military Assistance Advisory Group-Portugal. This palace featured a ball room completely surrounded in mirrors, and a 500-year old rubber tree in the backyard, one of four remaining specimens brought from India by Vasco da Gama.
If you enjoy learning a little history while enjoying a great mystery, don't miss this award winning book! I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Book Description
Third in the series of crime novels featuring what Booklist called "far and away the most inventive new detective hero," California Fish and Game warden John Marquez's latest investigation begins with Marquez on the phone to a confidential informant as she's mysteriously abducted. Marquez and his understaffed teamwhich is slated for shutdown by top brasssearch frantically for the informant in their remaining weeks, while also pursuing sturgeon poachers (who may have something to do with the kidnapping) and tangling with both the Russian mob and the FBI along the way. And you thought your job was tough.
Customer Reviews:
You'll never think of caviar the same way again.......2007-03-13
This is a great read, set a present-day thriller in the delta of California's Sacramento River. Russell gives us a powerful sense of place, confjures up a whole new breed of creey bad guys, and raises our environmental awareness without sounding like Al Gore on a bad day.
The first thing I did when I finished the book was to make a reservation for brunch at the Ryde Hotel--mentioned twice in Dead Game--so I could head out to the delta and experience again the sights, sounds and smells Russell evokes in his book.
Intricate, suspenseful and engaging.......2006-01-26
While in the midst of an undercover operation delving into the illegal capture and exploitation of California sturgeon, Fish and Game Warden receives a frantic call from Russian informant Anna Burdovsky, who tells him that two suspicious men have pulled up alongside her parked car. Trying to reassure her, he tells her to sit tight while he makes his way towards her location. The men, however, act while Marquez is in transit; the game warden listens helplessly on his cell phone as Anna is forced into their car.
Anna's apparent kidnapping and the fact that Marquez's funding runs out soon lends a new urgency to the investigation, causing the warden to push harder for answers. Marquez's actions begin to catch people's attention, including that of his target and of the FBI. Now presiding over an investigation that's threatening to spin out of his control, Marquez is forced to make some difficult and life altering decisions.
Intricate, suspenseful and engaging, Dead Game is Russell's third novel (following 2003's Shell Games and 2004's Night Game) to feature stolid ex-DEA agent John Marquez, a man whose sense of duty is only outweighed by his disdain for those who would squander the natural resources entrusted to his care-readers quickly learn to trust his steady voice, and to sympathize with it, as Russell increase the odds against his protagonist's success with each successive plot twist. Marquez and his crew strive mightily to prove equal to the task, however, making for thoroughly gripping reading.
Russell's on his game here.......2005-12-03
This one's a keeper--clearly Kirk Russell's best novel yet. Among many evolutions that take place in this third story of what I hope will someday be a dozen John Marquez mysteries, we finally get the full measure of the hero himself. Yes, Marquez is a tough guy with a tender streak, a hopeful cynic--he's all these contradictions and complexities. But there's more. In this story, Marquez reveals a lot more about his fears and sense of unrealized potential, uncertainty about his capacity as a husband and father, worries about his own future, so intertwined with the Fish & Game's Special Ops Unit. In short, he reveals himself to be a lot like us.
Disclosure: as a long-time San Francisco Bay environmental advocate, I confess to a certain and unabashed bias for Russell's yarns, and Deadgame especially. He's gotten it right about the plight of the Delta sturgeon (and frankly, the whole Delta). His descriptions of the dichotomous beauty and fragility of the Delta are evocative, well-researched and compelling. Reading this book, I kept flashing back to an earlier SF Bay champion who told us of "another world there among the Bay's brackish reaches"...Jack London himself.
Bravo! Memo to Kirk Russell: send us more, and soon.
best of the series.......2005-10-15
If you have enjoyed reading the other Marquez novels you will certainly not want to miss this read. Author Russell has brought the tension level to a new level in this story. No wasted moments spent reading this book, in fact it was hard to put it down at all. If you arent familiar with the Marquez books any will stand alone but this is my personal favorite with it's sharp delivery and fast paced action.
fine fish and wildlife police procedural .......2005-10-10
California Fish & Game Special Operations Unit Warden John Marquez is concerned with the poaching of sturgeon in the Sacramento/San Joaquin River delta. Someone was killing the sturgeon to "extract" the eggs to make caviar and is unconcerned about collateral damage to other fish. However, Marquez does not have the manpower to stop the poachers as his unit has shrunk down to three while the criminals have gotten smarter, bigger, and more energetic, and the FBI steps in and out looking for sound byte poser cases only.
Still he tries using informants to help him catch the crooks such as former sturgeon poacher Abe Raburn who Marquez pressures into testifying against former KGB agent Nikolai Ludovna, who came to the states allegedly as a realtor, but is the caviar poaching kingpin. Abe proves uninformative perhaps out of fear of retaliation. Russian-born field guide Anna Burdovsky agrees to help, but she vanishes without a trace following a meeting with specialty food storeowner Don August, who Marquez believes sells illegal caviar. With potential problems at home, Marquez concentrates on expediting Anna from danger though he fears he is too late.
The key to this fine fish and wildlife police procedural is the different personalities that make up the sturgeon poaching crowd as readers will understand the economic motivations of poachers, sellers, storeowners, users, law enforcement officials, and informants. The story line is somewhat typical of the undermanned and under-equipped cops struggling to defeat superior forces while knowing a victory today just means a new criminal takes over the territory. DEAD GAME is a fabulous tale that entertains the audience while also educating readers with how complex the environmental-economic issues are.

As many readers know, Cajun cooking began with the Arcadians, French settlers who made their first home in what is now Nova Scotia. The Trout Point Lodge Cookbook offers more than 150 uncomplicated recipes, from the title's eponymous Nova Scotia inn and dining spot. Its owners--the book's authors--have perfected a cuisine that embodies both Cajun, Creole, and original Arcadian cooking, and offer a wide range of traditional and innovative recipes for the likes of Grilled Eggplant Tart, Finnan Haddie Jumbalaya, Creole-Stuffed Bell Peppers, and Braised Haddock with Summer Vegetables. The book emphasizes the natural foods of the region, and readers will find particularly worthwhile recipes for mushrooms, such as Grilled Oyster Mushrooms and Garlic, and Shiitake Mushrooms Rockefeller. Formulas containing more exotic natural ingredients include Sole in Wild Sorrel Velouté Sauce, and Beer-Battered Elderberry Flowers. (A source list helps readers procure some of the unusual ingredients.) Menus, and an extended section on smoking seafood, with instructions for building and using a smokehouse, round out this special exploration. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
In the early nineties, friends Daniel Abel, Charles Leary, and Vaughn Perret noticed something significant about Louisiana’s culinary landscape: the many of the indigenous foods and techniques that had once been so integral to Cajun and Creole cooking had vanished. Fueled by their appreciation for Old-World French farming and cooking styles, as well as New World native products, the three founded the renowned Chicory Farm and Chicory Farm Café. Their distinctive cheeses, mushrooms, and organic produce were soon featured in the best New Orleans restaurants, and brought about a renaissance in small farms and local produce.
Continuing their search for the roots of Cajun/Creole cuisine, in 1996 the trio traveled to an area in Nova Scotia originally known as Acadia, where French settlers early in the seventeenth century founded North America’s first culinary society: the Order of Good Cheer. When expelled by the British in the eighteenth century, these French Acadians moved to Louisiana, where they were called Cajuns.
Out of the three partners’ trip came the idea for a center for food learning that would also be a vacation destination. Trout Point Lodge, a cooking school and resort located in the spectacular beauty of the Nova Scotia wilderness, was born. Called “extraordinary” by Food & Wine magazine, Trout Point has become one of the premier culinary destinations in North America.
The Trout Point Lodge Cookbook explores the fascinating merging of the Creole, Cajun, and Acadian cuisines–what the authors call New World Creole. Cooking with the most diverse, healthful, and fresh ingredients, the authors present original and enticing dishes tailored for the home cook. Here you’ll find recipes for Wild Mushroom Pâté, Finnan Haddie Jambalaya, Cashew Chili, Lime-Grilled Cattail Root, Sesame and Dill—Encrusted Haddock, and Blueberry Bread Pudding.
Historical and cultural tidbits, useful sidebars, and unique cooking tips–such as how to forage safely for wild mushrooms and how to smoke fish–complement the delicious culinary creations within these pages. Beautifully illustrated with photographs of the amazing dishes, the dramatic wilderness, and the stunning lodge itself, this unique and inspiring cookbook brings a new cuisine–New World Creole–to the table.

This book is a must have for anyone who collects antique English silver. Miller's Pocket Antique Fact File.......2004-06-26
This book is a great resource to have for both the novice and the professional. It lists the numerous marks and signs, together with tips on all areas of antiquities. This is especially valuable, as most dealers, while quite knowledgeable, tend to specialize in one particular area. This is a concise book that is inexpensive and can easily fit in your pocket. This is particularly helpful when you run across that peculiar silver service with the strange markings and don't have your library of reference books with you. It would be an asset for any glove box as well.
Nice little "take along" book.......1999-11-27
This is very handy for the newer antiquer and even for those that have been around for a bit since one person can't know everything about all things. It fits nicely in one's pocket or purse and with the cover taken off is a nice subtle black so you won't look to obvious as you check;-) The only thing I would like to see more of is pricing but it's not a bad little book for the price and it may save you some money along the way too.

A visually stunning collection, filled with equal measures of practical and aesthetic advice.......2006-08-09
The collaborative work of Paul Duchscherer (a design historian and interior designer specializing in history preservation work) and Linda Svendsen (a graduate of New York' Parsons School of Design and an expert photographer), Along Bungalow Lines: Creating An Arts & Crafts Home is a guide especially for homeowners interested in renovating and upgrading their vintage homes without sacrificing their unique Arts & Crafts styles. Chapters discuss American Historicism, Prairie Evolution and progressive period-style influence, the inspiration of "Greene Style", and much more, all embracing a closeness to nature and a high regard for elegance and creativity. Full-color photographs on every page allow for a breathtaking tour of beautiful homes, and the brief text debates conundrums affecting projects ranging from enlarging a period home to constructing a new building designed to echo a historic one. A visually stunning collection, filled with equal measures of practical and aesthetic advice.

Book Description
ATTENTION: Teachers, counselors, youth workers, pastors, and human service personnel
You work with kids.
Not just any kids.
You have the square pegs, the oddballs, the at - risk kids.
You know how special and wonderful they can be.
But you're running low on ideas to keep them learning, interested, and involved. You've thought about theatre, but where and how do you start? First, You Sit on the Floor!
Author/teacher Michael Burns knows from experience how to develop new original theatre pieces on topics that matter to today's kids, from substance abuse, teen sexuality, and violence prevention to respect for the differently abled. He shows you how to provide both a serious education in theatre arts and a real working ensemble involving:
- acting and improvisational training
- group writing exercises
- scenario development
- a unique "high tech/low tech" approach to production
- finding and creating nontraditional performance spaces
Along the way, learn how to challenge, uplift, and inform a group of teens; help them form a cohesive, active team; and build skills in communication, conflict resolution, and creative expression.
Whether you are interested in developing a one - time performance or building a lasting theatre program, this book is an invaluable resource - a powerful tool for reaching, teaching, and transforming the lives of young people, and yourself.
For more than twenty years, Michael Burns has been introducing young people and adults to the joy of creating original theatre. He teaches Theatre Arts at The Charlton School, a residential facility for adolescent girls with learning disabilities and emotional difficulties in Saratoga County, New York.
