January 1917: five French soldiers are marched to their own front lines where they will be tossed out into no man's land with their hands tied behind their backs and left for the Germans to shoot. They were, in civilian life, variously a pimp, a mechanic, a farmer, a carpenter, and a fisherman; now they are condemned because each had sought to leave the war by shooting himself in the hand. Taken to a godforsaken trench nicknamed Bingo Crépuscule, the five are reluctantly sent out into the darkness; days later, five bodies are recovered and the families are notified, merely, that the men died in the line of duty.

August 1919: Mathilde Donnay receives a letter from a dying man. In it, the former soldier tells her that he met her beloved fiancé, the fisherman Manech, shortly before he died. Mathilde goes to meet Sergeant Daniel Esperanza at his hospital and there hears the story of the execution. She also receives a package with a photograph of the men and copies of their last letters. As Mathilde reads and rereads the letters and goes over Esperanza's tale, she begins to suspect that perhaps the story didn't end quite so neatly. And so begins her very long investigation into the mysterious circumstances surrounding the deaths of five condemned prisoners--one of whom, at least, might not really be dead.

In Mathilde Donnay, Sebastien Japrisot has created one of the most compelling and delightful heroines in modern fiction. Though confined to a wheelchair since childhood, "Mathilde has other lives, varied and quite beautiful ones." She paints, cares for her pets, enjoys a rich fantasy life, and is relentless in her search for the truth about Manech's death. But she is by no means the only vibrant personality leaping off Japrisot's pages. This author has a remarkable ability to draw even minor characters in three dimensions with economy and wit. Take Mathilde's mother, for instance, caught in mid-card game: "At bridge, manille, bezique, Mama is a dirty rotten swine. Not only is she an ace with the pasteboards, but she throws her opponents off their mettle by insulting or making fun of them." And even the characters we meet only through other people's memories--the condemned men--are so fully realized that you find yourself torn over which one you hope may have survived. As Mathilde comes ever closer to solving the mystery of what happened at Bingo Crépuscule that January morning in 1917, Sebastien Japrisot proves himself a master storyteller and A Very Long Engagement a near perfect novel. --Alix Wilber

Book Description

Set during and after the First World War, A Very Long Engagement tells the story of a young woman's search for her fianceacute;, whom she believes might still be alive despite having officially been reported as "killed in the line of duty." Unable to walk since childhood, fearless Mathilde Donnay is undeterred in her quest as she scours the country for information about five wounded French soldiers who were brutally abandoned by their own troops. A Very Long Engagement is a mystery, a love story, and an extraordinary portrait of life in France before and after the War.

This novel is beatiful. The faith of the principal character is so amazing that I cannot stop the reading until the end. Outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars A beguiling, jarring tale of war, love and determination.......2006-09-24

Wheelchair-bound Mathilde Donnay sets her sights on the past to unravel the mystery of her fiance's death in Japrisot's complex novel of love and human perception. Set in post World War I France, the story opens with a masterfully sardonic description of five soldiers, condemned to die for shooting themslves in the hand, being tumbled into the no-man's land between the French and German trenches.

Their loved ones are informed of their death in combat. One, Mathilde, determines to know more and is assisted by a dying ex-soldier -- the man who led the condemned group to the Front.

Mathilde, still unsatisfied, notes oddities and discrepancies in the meagre record she has compiled. She tracks down any possible witness, relentlessly pursues every lead. All evidence, however contradictory in other respects, points to the same end and even Mathilde finally seems resigned to learning no more than just how her lover died.

With humor and an anecdotal style, Japrisot maintains a certain distance from his characters that makes the savagery of war all the more visceral. He leads the reader on with human mysteries -- there are as many versions of the soldiers' deaths as there are individual memories -- and with flashes of pathos and kindness. And the story's ending is as touching as it is surprising.

3 out of 5 stars This is a very slow and plodding novel.......2006-02-04

I picked up this novel in part due to the many glowing reviews here. In retrospect, I have to wonder if these people were lauding the book or the movie. The book is very tedious in many respects due to its format. I think that Japrisot based his writing partially upon Calvino's work, such as the novel 'If on a Winters Night a Traveler,' or 'Invisible Cities.' The chapters of Japrisot weave from here to there in time and perspective dealing with first hand accounts, letters, and conversations. I think that all of this was a little too clever for Japrisot and that after a while the cumbersome nature of all this forces a collapse of will and you as a reader will be overwhelmed by its overworked zeal. I brought up Calvino because where-as 'Winters Night' is magical in many ways, 'Engagement' comes across as sort of typical.

You might disagree with my summation here. The story is pretty good, though I would not recommend it to anyone. I think that Japrisot's cleverness smothers a lot of what was enjoyable in regards to the plot. I would say that if you enjoyed this book, you are in for a nice treat if you have not read 'Winters Night...' by Calvino. You might also be interested in Murakami's 'Wind Up Bird Chronicle'.

5 out of 5 stars Moving 'mystery'.......2005-10-29

This isn't a mystery in the widely-accepted sense of a mystery. But it is a story of putting together clues to discover the truth. I don't need to summarize the book again (there are plenty of good ones already submitted), but I wanted to add my five stars to the review page. By the way, I read this after I saw the film version (which I also recommend). It's worth reading even after seeing it performed.

5 out of 5 stars Read the Book First!!!.......2005-08-17

This is an amazing story of love and hope. I found myself holding my breath turing the pages. This is such a great novel and the movie just does not do it any justice.

Sprinkled with recipes! Who would have thought a mystery could be so delicious? Murder, mayhem and food, what a great combination. I have met the author and she is a great caterer with a terrific imagination.

    5 out of 5 stars A Catered Wedding: A Mystery with Recipes.......2006-11-10

Just started reading this author and have ordered her next book in this series. The books are so interesting you can't wait until the next one to come out and the recipes are an added bonus

1 out of 5 stars How Did This Book Get Published?.......2006-07-26

This was the first book I'd read in this series by Isis Crawford, and based on this selection I won't read any others. Too many grammatical errors on nearly every page. It's distracting and sloppy. Even the story line, which initially has promise, gets lost at the end and just kind of filters out. This reads like a first draft, not like a polished novel.

2 out of 5 stars Overshadowed by Errors.......2006-06-22

The 2nd installment in the Catered Mystery series found sisters Bernadette and Libby Simmons catering a wedding for "wallet-sniffer", Leeza Sharp. Leeza is marrying the baron of caviar, Jura Raid. She plans an expensive, elaborate wedding and instead of reveling in her beautiful nuptials, she is murdered. Leeza was definitely what many might call a "bridezilla", and few people were upset by her death. Bernadette and Libby jump in to find a murderer, and save themselves from being labeled the caterers that kill.

I very rarely have given a book a 2 star rating. I wanted to like this book. I read the reviews prior to purchasing the book, and thought that I could get past the grammatical errors, and uneven plot. I could not. I was highly disappointed with the massive amount of errors, and general lack of commas throughout the book. It was highly distracting, and I struggled to follow the dialogue. As a previous reviewer mentioned, I thought the premise was good. However, this was completely lost with all of the errors, and I will not be in a hurry to read any more books in this series.

The first book in the series was called "A Catered Murder". There are several other great culinary mysteries on the market, so if you like culinary mysteries, you may want to give those a try. A similar concept in catering mysteries (and very highly recommended) is the Diane Mott Davidson series. Enjoy!

    3 out of 5 stars Likable Sisters.......2006-04-08

This is the second novel in the series and I won't go through the story since you probably know it by now from reading the other reviews. I like the sisters, their totally different personalities makes it refreshing. I did not guess the murderer, which is saying something, because I'm usually pretty good at that so it was a plus. The only problem I had was one that has been mentioned and that was the poor grammatical errors throughout the book. You never know if it is the writer or the publisher's fault. I would like to ask Ms. Crawford to please find another word in place of "snort" or "snorted." I found it annoying that so many people were "snorting" their way through conversations......"he snorted," "she snorted,"...etc., etc. I think there were at least two "snorts" per chapter, maybe more but I didn't count them. This was the same for the first book, "A Catered Murder." I had fun with the characters...this was a light read and good for a day when you need to fill in some time. I will continue to read the books to see what relationship evolves between Libby and Marvin and if Sean (their father)will actually NOT be embarrassed to be seen in public in his wheelchair. His view on that has bothered me, and gives the hint that maybe disabled person's should be heard....not seen.

      Book Description

This important book offers a revolutionary approach to solving a range of social problems--drug use, smoking, unsafe sex, and overpopulation--by applying marketing techniques and concepts to change behavior. For example, it shows that at-risk teenagers are consumers who decide whether or not to "buy" safe sex practices. This successful approach is based on Alan R. Andreasen's more than twenty years of experience in consulting, teaching, and research with social marketing programs around the world.

Andreasen shows that effective social change starts with a thorough understanding of the needs, wants, and perceptions of the target consumer--who has ultimate control over the outcomes. The book offers a detailed explanation of how to design a step-by-step program that will move the customer from ignorance and indifference to action and ultimately maintenance of that action. Marketing Social Change offers a wealth of information for developing an effective social marketing plan.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very good basic book on social marketing.......2004-10-10

This book provides a very good overview of social marketing. I use this as a text book in a graduate course that I teach and find it useful in giving students a clear idea of how social marketing relates to the broader topic of nonprofit marketing, without requring them to wade through all of the additional information that a more general marketing textbook would offer. Author Alan Andreason is a leading thinker on the topic of social marketing and has organized this relatively short book in a straightforward manner that makes it easy to separate the preparatory work from the actual execution of social marketing plans.

The one complaint I have about this book, and the reason that I have not awarded it five stars, is that the examples used are less than exciting and I find that I need to supplement this book with additional titles so that my students get the bigger picture of how social marketing principles play out in various cultures around the world, not just in the United States. For those who are looking to expand their understand of social marketing in the developing world and in emerging economies, see also Marketing the Public Sector by Seymour Fine. Sadly, this great book is a bit dated, as it was published in 1992, but balanced with this Andreason book (or a comparable book by Philip Kotler) you will be able to give yourself a solid grasp of the topic.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive book.......2002-07-17

This is the best book to give you grounding in social marketing. It also is a handy reference that you'll go back to again and again. It's well written and very accessible.

Thirteen essays are arranged under four headings by history, representations, marketplace and resistances, following the history of scholarly food writing and feminist food studies. From studies on the influence of large corporations in determining what made up a proper meal in this country to surveys on how women have kept families nourished, essays consider race, gender, and social identity as it relates to food.

        Book Description

With magnificent photographs by the bestselling photographer Joshua Greene, Almost Antiques will build on the success of Penguin Studio's classic Antiques for the Table. It opens up to collectors a new frontier--the fine china, glass, and silver of 1890 to 1940, easy to find and still affordable--in an exciting overview of four coexisting design movements: Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts, Beaux Arts, and Art Deco. This is the first tableware book to mix and match these increasingly popular styles for tabletops, which are unerringly fresh and original. The period homes and haunts of the rich and stylish, from Hollywood's imagemakers to Detroit's barons of industry, create au courant backdrops for the settings: readers are invited to sit at the captain's table aboard the Queen Mary, mix a cocktail in Edsel Ford's moderne bar, join Frank Lloyd Wright for dinner, and toast the New Year at Mabel Dodge Wilson's mansion. Complete with a resource guide and directory of sites, Almost Antiques is both a practical guide and a gorgeous gift for seasoned and novice collectors and entertainers alike.

        5 out of 5 stars Nicely Done!.......2007-05-06

This book provides some very lovely, refreshing ideas & designs that will knit up quickly for yourself, or as a gift. The designs allow some "play" with newer yarns on the market & will appeal to the younger crowd, as well. There's a wide variety of patterns offered. I don't get much time to knit, but I love to knit. This book was a great solution for my personal situation - a hectic home schedule! The photography is nicely done, provides good photos of each project. A little bit of imagination on behalf of the individual knitter would take what this book has to offer, far! It's a nice surprise!

2 out of 5 stars kind of cheesy.......2007-01-05

I agree with someone said below about this book being tacky. There are only a couple of patterns that I thought I might use, but really, you could probably find better variations elsewhere. If I had had a chance to look through this book in the store I wouldn't have bought it.

5 out of 5 stars Great New Book.......2005-07-13

I first borrowed this book from my local library, and I found that there were so many projects that I wanted to try that I ended up deciding that I wanted to buy my own copy of the book.
The projects are relatively easy ones, as one would expect from a book with this title. If you are looking for a particularly challenging project then this book probably isn't for you. But if you want to make something fun and creative that will work up fairly quickly, then I am sure you will find something that appeals to you in this book. The projects are attractive and there is a nice variety of projects offered. The photos are excellent, giving you an accurate idea of what the project will look like when completed. Best of all, the directions are crystal clear --easy to read and easy to follow.
I intend to make many items from this book -- for myself as well as for gifts.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for renewed knitter (me!).......2005-07-11

I borrowed this book from my local library, and I have to say I am thrilled with it! I was never a very good knitter, preferring to sew, quilt, or crochet, but with relatively easy patterns like these, I expect to improve greatly, if only through practice from making several of the projects. Although the patterns are fairly basic, perhaps too much so for more experienced knitters, the use of relatively inexpensive, widely available yarns, makes them look completely different from similar projects found in a typical "learn to knit" book made from garden-variey acrylic yarn. I'm a very visual person, but have trouble picturing in my mind how a certain project would look made up in a fancier yarn, so I really appreciate the great photos of these projects made in nicer yarns - different from those I use in my humanitarian work, for example. I like the looks of the finished projects and the clearly written patterns so well that about half the people on my Christmas gift list will be receiving items made from this book (yes, even the guys!).

Listing the brand name and specific color of the yarn used in each project has been very helpful to me as I've shopped online for similar yarns before hitting the stores.

In short, I think this book is great, and I look forward to adding it to my personal library in the near future.

1 out of 5 stars Tackiest Knitting Book Ever!.......2005-07-08

Don't waste your money. About half of the patterns use fluffy novelty yarns like paton's cha cha or boa in simple items like scarfs (a fuzzy scarf knit all in garter stitch! Does anyone really need this pattern? And a tank top made completly out of boa yarn!) You can get the same patterns for free from the ball band. There are one or 2 patterns that are alright (an afghan and I can't remember the other one). But nothing that anyoneshould be aloud to wear.

        Book Description

Florida’s architectural history can be traced to the Spanish colonial settlement of St. Augustine in the mid-16 century, while the state’s architectural development reached its mature stage in the 19th century. Casa Florida is an exuberant, full-color celebration of the enduring influence of Spanish architecture and design upon Florida’s resorts, private houses, and gardens.
Casa Florida explores the earliest influences of the Spanish style in the Sunshine State, its revival in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and its contemporary expression in architecture today, with a strong focus on the style’s unifying concept of fantasy and Florida’s unique tendency to inspire enraptured states of mind and spectacular built environments. Susan Sully provides colorful history and anecdotes that complement Steven Brooke’s magnificent full-color photography of the region’s signature style in examples representing the entire state and ranging from the charming to the splendid.

This book has a terrific collection of photos of old Florida, Tuscany-type homes. We've looked all over for a book like this. Hope others enjoy it as much.

5 out of 5 stars Spanish Architecture a la Florida is Different than California.......2006-03-11

The first town in the New World was in Florida and it was a Spanish town. Since then the Spanish influence on the arthitecture and culture of Florida has been large.

In this book a selection of buildings has been carefully selected to illustrate the history of Spanish-style structures from across the state. From an age standpoint, there are some quite old (but certainly not run down) homes varying up through some modern homes built using traditional styling. A few commercial buildings such as hotels are also included.

From a style standpoint, the homes of Florida seem to have been influenced more by a Mediterranean, even Moorish, look than the Spanish architecture houses more common in the Western States that have more of a Mexican influence.

Beautiful pictures beautifully printed on a high quality matte finished paper add a warmth to the book that glossy magazine style printing imparts.

        5 out of 5 stars book review.......2006-03-10

we are having a new villa style home built and have gotten many wonderful ideas from the camera art in this book. page after page of wonderful spanish/mediterranean homes are pictured in this beautiful volume.

5 out of 5 stars Spanish Mansions Oh My!.......2006-03-07

In my hunt for more information on Spanish Style homes, (I own a bungalow in California), I have been frustrated at the limited amount of books out there. I work at a Library, and many of the patrons share the same frustrations. In order to be able to find books on these subjects, I have had to self-teach about the many surrounding subjects; ie, tiles, Mexico, Moorish, Morocco, Spain, etc. This book is one of the better ones. It has beautiful pictures on how to decorate and landscape. I learned that air-conditioning changed architecture in a substantive way. I had also never heard about concrete ceilings made to look like wood before, apparently a Florida staple, due to humidity. These houses are oh-my-Gorgeous! The only problem was that the author frequently discussed beautiful rooms and details of the houses, then didn't show pictures. Maybe/hopefully, they're saving those pics for a follow-up book on interiors and details? I agree with the previous reviewer, how about a book now on Florida Spanish bungalows?

        5 out of 5 stars It's About Time!.......2005-12-21

I have been waiting a long time for a book like this! While the Spanish style homes of California have been documented in numerous books, the large amount of this architecture that was built in Florida during the same period has never gotten the amount of press it deserves. There are books on the architecture of Addison Mizner and a few other noted Florida architects, but nothing comprehensive on the style that was so prevalent during the boom years, and which was used in big cities like Miami and much smaller towns all over the state. This book covers houses from Miami to Winter Park and gives a nice overview of the style. I was very impressed not only by the amazing photographs, but by the histories that went along with each home featured. These histories allow the reader to put the home into its proper context and can be used as guides for people like me that are restoring similar homes. I wasn't as impressed with the newer homes in the back of the book, but there are only three relatively modern houses covered, so it does not take much away from the overall content. Since many of the homes built in this style were smaller bungalows it would have been nice to have seen some of them included, but the homes pictured are stunning! This book is must have.

3 out of 5 stars Out of date.......2005-10-11

Too much of the book is dedicated to showing assembly language shaders. The examples are built with the DirectX SDK and framework that was available when it was written, and won't compile with the later SDKs (I have June 2005). Other than that, it is a good reference to supplement the difficult to read SDK documentation.

4 out of 5 stars Shaders and shader programming.......2004-07-19

As of this writing, there doesn't seem to be a real reference manual for HLSL and the shader assembly language. This book makes a good effort at filling that role, however.

The graphics programmer is likely to find this very useful. It integrates C application code with shader examples. It also discusses on-the fly compilation, use of resources for shader source code, the relationships between vertex and pixel shaders, texture samplers, and 'techniques' for pulling all the pieces together. Performance programming gets some discussion, but isn't a central topic. Appendices specify the shader language in dryly formal terms, but the descriptive chapters make most language features very clear.

The shader programming model is decidedly non-standard. A rendering program does not work at all like a C program. Yes, a C/C++ programmer will be able to follow a shader's internals easily enough. The problem, though, is that a C program is in charge of what data gets handled when. Everything in a rendering program is silently a callback, however. It's invoked by some execution engine that sequences the input and output data, and even synchronizes multiple (and almost invisible) threads of execution. The hardware rendering program also interacts strongly with the application running in the main processor, partly through "semantics", reflective "annotations", and various parameter-setting mechanisms. There is a huge amount of mechanism at work, and it gives the real meaning to the interacting programs on the host and graphics engine. That mechanism is described in a black-box way, what it does rather than how it works. I think I've reverse engineered the workings, enough for my purposes, but this book did not address my needs directly.

Still, it's the best I've found. Real graphics programs, like games and scientific visualization, are much more than lines and circles. This book, with its examples, will surely help the beginner acquire a working knowledge.

2 out of 5 stars Read DirectX9 SDK documents first........2004-02-23

I suggest to read DirectX9 SDK document fist that comes with DirectX9 SDK. Think about this book later. This book ends explanation as stream of comments of the simple sample shaders that come with SDK. I'd say this book is "out of focus". There are bunch of important things that should be explained - are not in this book. Such explanations are in SDK document.
However, if you want to be away from computer and learn about shaders in relaxed in your bed or at a cafe, or if you are an naturalist who do not want to waste printer inks and papers to print out SDK document, in terms of such points, this book may worth to you.

5 out of 5 stars Does what the title says.......2004-01-07

If you want what any professional game programmer would expect from this book, buy it - it does exactly that. It isn't a CG specific book and isn't aimed at C# programmers, but you wouldn't expect it to be. It's reasonable documentation and tutorial material for writing shaders.

3 out of 5 stars No Microsoft .NET.......2003-09-13

My book has "Microsoft .NET" on the cover, down left corner. It's the reason I bought the book. It has NOTHING to do with .NET. I don't understand why Microsoft puts it there? It's like BMW putting "V8" on the back of their 4-cylinder 300-series just because they have V8:s.
