There were times in this book when I had to force myself to keep reading because it slowed down. But for the most part, it was astonishing. As a reader, just when you think you've made good judgements of the characters, light shines on the passed leading up to the moments of judgement, and a whole new perspective is found, over and over again. Of all the books I've read this book has left the deepest impression on me. Fantastic!

A Yellow Raft in Blue Water is a novel I won't soon forget. Set in Seattle and Montana, it tells the tale of three Native American women--Rayona, Christine and Ida--each in her own voice. They are related, a family, and their worlds intersect and tear apart, span out and braid back together, but it is not until the ending that the reader fully understands how the events which start the novel have come to pass.
It is told in reverse, starting with the youngest, Rayona or Ray for short. At first, her strength lies in the unconditional love she has for her mother but after her mother deserts her and she is forced to fend for herself (and is molested by a priest), she shows that her strength does not come from others. She is a warrior and by the end of her story, she comes to embody the spirit of all those missing who came before her--all those we don't truly know about until the end of the book.
Christine seems weak, diseased and tormented with feelings that her mother did not love her. These lifelong feelings led her down a path of promiscuity and jealousy goaded her into pressuring her beloved brother to enlist. And when he does and dies in Vietnam, it is as if he is reborn in her daughter. The same feelings of unworthiness consume her until her health fails and she returns home to find love again--love in an old friend, love in her daughter and love in the woman who raised her.
Aunt Ida is the true enigma and the undying and unexpected source of strength. She has martyred herself and because of this, the lives of others have turned sour. But her goal was an honorable one. She wanted love and to be loved. She wanted safety. She wanted to weave together disparate parts and form a whole. As shown at the end of the book when Ida takes the one man who never hurt her to the roof of her house, she wanted to braid her loved ones together and have them be stronger for it.

I had to read this book for a class, but once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. The identities of each character are so distinct and well-written that you begin to believe you are there with the character. Dorris provides a great insight of family and womanhood. There are so many surprises and jolts along the way, I just LOVED it. The book really reminds me of people today, of the old generations before us and how they see the new group. Very good book indeed. Plus its an easy read.

So starts "A Yellow Raft in Blue Water," one story told in turns by mother, daughter, and granddaughter. When I first heard about this, I was looking for a book for school. It looked intriguing, so I chose it. By page 50, I was having difficulty putting the book down. The first part of the book is told by Rayona, a 15 year old girl with a Native American mother and an African American father, and the basic plot and the outcome is revealed. Then the story switches to Christine, the mother of Rayona, and the story is embellished and added to, until finally Ida takes over. Ida is Christine's mother and Rayona's grandmother, and she finally supplies the last piece of a story spanning three generations. The only pieces that are not so great are the ending, which seemed a little clunky and unresolved, and the end of each of the sections, especially Rayona's. This is overall a very good book, and I recommend it.

One of the most engaging aspects of M.J. Rose's writing is that she gives the reader an "insider's look" into a possibly unfamiliar venue. "Flesh tones" is set in the art world, and both the process of painting and the business end were depicted in an interesting and convincing way. The characters were attractive and made you care about them.

MJ Rose paints a portrait of an amazing bond between a man and woman. Genny and Slade, both products of the art world, meet when she is far too young to fall in love with him, or to share his passion. She misrepresents her age and background to be with him, and Rose skips forward, after laying the foundation, to Genny's immeasureable sacrifice for the man she loves. Rose is equally at home writing about art, death, the courtroom and the bedroom. She's one author I'll not soon forget!

Genny Haviland met artist Slade Gabriel in her father's gallery when she was 17. They became lovers, an affair that lasted for only weeks in reality but survived for the rest of Genny's life in her heart and soul. They meet again twenty years later, only to have Gabriel learn he has fallen victim to rapidly advancing Alzheimer's. Knowing he could not bear to live without his art, Genny agrees to help him commit suicide.
But a missing letter results in her arrest for murder, and a grief-stricken Genny has no inclination to fight the charge. Instead, as the trial proceeds, she reviews the past, the present and the relationship that has defined her emotional life, looking for an answer that may defy explanation.

A sexy and suspenseful novel.......2003-05-30
I have learned that if a book doesn't grab you within the first 50 pages or so to foget about it and move onto something else. This book had me hooked within the first 20 pages. This book does a wonderful job at exploring that very fine line between love and obsession at times I felt like I was reading Genny's personal diary, but this book is much more than a smutty beach read. Did Genny Haviland kill her lover or did she save him from a terrible disease that would rob him of everything he knows and holds dear? M.J. Rose's writing style is efortless and smooth. Half the story is told in the present tense during the murder trial and half the story is told through the use of flashbacks, which normally can be hard for the reader to follow, but in this instance they are used to define very important elements in the story. Ms. Rose's writing style is masterful, the reader becomes totally absorbed in the tapestry of the story, there are passages that read like poetry that force the reader to go back and read them again. It was impossible for me not to turn the pages, I was transfixed and I will definetly be on the lookout for more by M.J. Rose!!

M.J. Rose knows writing! I finished Flesh Tones last night and have to say how much I admire her work. Her characters and the situation are finestkind, but I am most impressed with the way she tells the tale. What superb timing, and how nicely she spins a chapter strand into transition. With a tease here and a glimpse there, M.J. Rose gives us just enough to move the story along, like oars move a shell over the water: allowing us to glide between strokes, never losing momentum, accelerating smoothly to a stunning finish.

There must be something wrong with Amazon or with the other reviewers (who are reviewing Harry Potter), because this page is for Tolkien's novel The Two Towers (see the book cover and information), which has nothing to do with the Harry Potter novel. They are very different. The Lord of the Rings is the best fantasy story ever written. Along with Isaac Asimov's Foundation sci-fi saga, TLOTR is one of the greatest epics.

cest un livre qui ma profondement toucher. jai lu cette histoire il y a 20 ans jai lu le seigneur des anneaux avec un coeur adolescent et l,an dernier avec un coeur d,adulte il ma fait rire, pleurer et ma fait voyager aux travers des peuples, des villages, et d,une guerre. jai aimer le courage des hobits, de la sagesse de gandalf, et de la noblesse d,aragon et la beaute des elfes. cest un livre que jaime car l,ecriture de l,auteur j.r.r. tolkein nous possede tellement dans le moment que la terre est arreter a ce moment. cest un livre d,aventure qui vous apporte dans une autre époque je vous souhaite bonne lecture. kathymaheu-cpc

Cette tome est assez satisfaisant. Pour moi, c'etait une chance de lire quelque chose en francais que je connais en anglais. Le translation, bien sur, manque le qualite de poesie anglais. Le chapitre de Tom Bombadil, particulierement, est depourvus de la poesie du style Tolkien. Neanmois, c'est fidele a Tolkien, et je suis enchantee par les nommes des characteres en francais -- Cul de Sac / Bag End par instance, ou Grand Pas / Strider. C'est un translation avec l'energie et la creativite.

I'm not nearly as excited about this book as some of the other readers. It is a great coffee table book with lots of great pictures, but as for the recipes I found them sadly lacking. Paul Kirks book is much better at half the price and I can guarantee it will be used twice as much. If I hadn't got mine as a gift I would have felt like I got ripped off.

Beautiful photographs of, yes, inspired flower arrangements. These arrangements go beyond ikebana in the formal sense, and head out into mixed-media art territory. The photography is lovely as well. If you're looking for ikebana instruction, this is probably not it. But if you love plants, art, Asian/minimalist aesthetics, and/or lovely photography, drink deep.

Good for inspiration only.......2006-07-13
Small amount of information about how to dry flowers and store them. The rest of the book is lots of good quality color photos of many different design ideas in lots of different settings with a short half or full page about what inspired a particular design and usually what plants the design contains. There is no information about how to create the particular design. This book should be considered a picture book of design ideas to inspire your own creativity. It certainly won't help you create the ones pictured.
more of a flower arrangement book than techniques of drying.......2003-01-19
I'm new to flower drying so there may be others that are better (which I'm still looking for) but this book has lots of neat ideas. There's a section on gathering and preserving flowers that talks a little about growing your own plants and then there's literally just one page on air-drying, one page on pressing and 2-3 pages on using silica gel. I was actually hoping for more details on drying techniques. The rest of the book (80%) is really ideas for arrangements. It does have beautiful pictures and indeed, they are inspirational but also a bit intimidating for a beginner.

A Landmark Design Book.......2005-11-10
This must be the first full book-length study of the increasingly popular subject of outdoor kitchens and cooking. The author's style is precise and easy, allowing the reader to understand the history of cooking outdoors, which, after all, is how cooking got started. The book is beautifully produced, with a profusion of color illustrations and drawings which illustrate the text's in-depth approach to all aspects of the subject. From simple outdoor grilling to the design and construction of a custom, high-end outdoor kitchen and dining area, the reader can develop a better feel for the glorious benefits of cooking by fire. A useful index of resources for products is included at the end.
Not to be ignored are the many sidebars in the book, many of which provide essential information, such as those relating to choosing grills, the estimation of food servings for groups, cleaning a grill and food safety when outdoors. Major chefs and designers who specialize in outdoor cooking and grilling are interviewed, including 'Barbeque Bible' maestro Steven Raichlen, Dwayne Ridgaway, Food Network star Paula Deen, Richard Sandoval (author of Modern Mexican Flavors) and Dinosaur Bar-B-Que owner John Stage.
We can't all afford to spend a fortune on a full-blown outdoor kitchen, but Amanda Lecky's book is a great resource for outdoor large and small, and is worth more than its weight in (gold or otherwise) briquettes. Outdoor cooking has never been so fully analyzed and featured and this book makes you want to run out on the patio, fight the fall chill and grill a great meal.

As a rookie in the CBS Washington, D.C., bureau in 1972, she got an assignment too grubby and unpromising for the big reporters: Watergate. She didn't just date Bob Woodward, she vied with him for scoops. For a quarter century, workaholic Stahl saw more of presidents and fellow bulldog newshound Sam Donaldson than her own daughter and husband, Urban Cowboy writer Aaron Latham.
Stahl's book belongs on any political-history shelf. Besides a briskly readable account of epochal events witnessed up close, she offers canny insights into what broke Nixon, backs up Tom Shales's opinion of Carter as "a combination Mr. Rogers and John the Baptist," assesses Reagan's mysteriously fogbank-like mind, and paints a startlingly warm portrait of George Bush (though not Barbara). I am sure she is preaching to the choir about her self-important life, but take it all with a grain of salt from the woman who still cannot undertand us 'normal' folk. An Exceptional Memoir!.......2002-05-07
What an interesting read! While most bios take you from birth through an unremarkable (and lengthy) adolescence, Stahl starts the book (and her life, by her own declaration) at age 30. Then - boom! - we're immediately thrust into Watergate (she was dating Bob Woodward at the time), where Stahl was the only TV newsperson covering the initial - and seemingly un-newsworthy - burglary.
From there, we're taken into each subsequent presidency - from Nixon to Bush Sr. - and shown how personnel, presidents, their staffs, and technology shaped TV news coverage of historical events.
The product of CBS news' affirmative action plan (along with Bernie Shaw and Connie Chung that year), Stahl was promoted in the early '70s to the Washington bureau. We are treated to an indepth account of her professional and personal triumphs. Of course, she occasionally goofed, which she comically relays, as well.
With each chapter titled for a president and first lady - Reagan gets two! - Stahl gives us the stories-behind-the-stories: correspondents outwitting each other for the scoop; Barbara Bush's surprisingly icy remarks and actions; Stahl's assessment of unsuccessful presidents; one White House staff that was hell-bent on getting rid of Dan Rather; the point when CNN emerged as the true news leader. That we get all this juicy, inside stuff is a testimony to the author. Only someone as busy as Stahl could supply it - she and her teased and hairsprayed "helmet" of a hairdo wore many hats: Chief White House Correspondent, Face the Nation host and America Tonight co-host during the Gulf War - at one point, all three at the same time!
If you wonder why George Bush's presidency is the last chapter of the book - how could she resist Clinton's escapades? - it is because her memoir is meant only to tell the story of her most well-known beat: the White House. Believe me, you get a lot! And after years of hard work at CBS in Washington, Stahl at long last - after years of waiting and, I think, unfairly having to audition - earned the 60 Minutes gig and relocated to New York.
If you enjoy books of a political nature, but told in an easy-to-understand manner, you'll find Stahl's respect and humility toward world news - and life - a pleasure to read. I highly recommend it.
An "insider's" view of Washington.......2002-03-24
Lesley Stahl does a very good job of combining her remembrances of the men who occupied the White House and her own career as a CBS News correspondent.
Her descriptions of all the presidents, and those nearest and dearest to them (both personally and publicly) are exactly right - from the paranoia of Richard Nixon on down. She stops with George Bush, probably because she wasn't in the Washington press corps anymore when Bill Clinton moved into the White House.
Combined with Ms Stahl's description of Washington's inner circles over the years is a somewhat detached description of her years with CBS News and with her family. Her personal story is not badly written, but I didn't really get a sense of her feelings toward her parents or her daughter, although her love for her husband comes shining through. On the other hand, her various friendships, battles, and other interactions with Dan Rather, Bill Plante, and others in front of and behind the camera at CBS News are very well done; I got a good sense of what these people are actually like - more than what I see of them when I watch the news.
It's truly a shame that Ms Stahl's description of her family life isn't as natural as the rest of her book. I had the pleasure of meeting her a few times when I was working behind the counter of the now-defunct Crown Books store a block away from the White House. I found her to be a warm, friendly person who spoke very naturally and lovingly about her daughter and other personal (but not TOO personal) topics - quite at odds with the impression I got reading her descriptions of them in her book.
Even with all that I've mentioned here, I would still recommend it.
LESLIE STAHL EXPOSED, BY HERSELF.......2001-09-16
When the name Leslie Stahl is mentioned, thr first thing that comes to mind is that serious, tough interrogator from CBS News, who has hosted various news formatted shows over the years. I always thought she was harder edged than say, Diane Sawyer.
In "Reporting Live" we discover, quite to our surprise, that Ms. Stahl carried around the same insecurities and problems as many of her viewers, that she did not have it "So together" as one might be tempted to assume. That in effect, she is as human as the rest of us, only she has a more visible job.
No one would have believed that a woman of this news caliber would allow herself to be so dominated by a controlling mother who obviously believed it was more about how one looked than what you knew. For the remainer of tidbits like this, I suggest you read the book. It is a really good read.
Poor Abridgment of a Good Story.......2001-09-07
Listening to this abridged audio has motivated me to want to read the book.
Although I did enjoy listening to Stahl read the book herself (you could actually "hear" her smile !) I found that this abridgment was awkward and poorly done. It was choppy and many loose ends were never tied up (like Stahl's husband's bout with depression). I particularly disliked the way it did not segue gracefully from one topic to another but abruptly changed topics.
I did like hearing about the minutae of her reporter's life and a lot of insider information about the presidents. I was fairly horrified to hear of Reagan's apparent mental decline during his years in office. Very scary.I also liked Stahl's honest opinions about many of the CBS brass. I am sure not all of them appreciated it.
Looking forward to reading the book!

Minnie is a wonderful book. Anyone can read it, but I would strongly recommend reading it if you're a cat lover. Being one myself, the plot of this book made me smile. Tibbs, a reporter for a newspaper loves to write about cats but is not supposed to. When Minnie, a young girl, comes along one day and ends up living with him, his job gets much easier. Since Minnie used to be a cat, she gossips with other cats to get news which no humans knew about yet. Minnie is also a handful, but Tibbs and her become great friends. This book is a quick and fun read full of imagination.

This book was one of the best I have ever read. It is charming and witty ; you will never look at a cat the same way again. Minnie, a cat suddenly turned human, and Mr. Tibbs, her human friend, have exciting adventures throughout the story, which is hinted with humor. The main plot develops into the solving of a crime and then the public revelation of the criminal, a prominent citizen. It is truly a must read for cat lovers and the average reader alike.
