3 out of 5 stars Nothing new here.......2007-08-01

Nothing new to read here, just the same old marathon training instructions we have all heard.

5 out of 5 stars 40 yrs old; 2:45 -> 2:35 in 5 months w/ this program.......2007-06-06

This program is tailored for the "serious but busy" athlete.
A big plus are the scaled programs from <50 mpw to >70.
The main emphasis is on LONG HARD RUNS. It is no secret that this is the key to aerobic development (Canova, Noakes, Costill etc).
Pfitz puts it into practice w/ a well thought out program.

My only issue would be that there is no "anaerobic threshold" training e.g. 6x2k @ 10k pace. While maybe a bit of overkill, training at this pace worked well for me in the past, and is advocated by others (Vigil, etc).

Definitely worth it - I will be following the 18 week cycle (with a few of my own modifications) for my next race.

5 out of 5 stars If you ever want to get to Boston, Get this book!!!.......2007-05-18

This book totally transformed my marathon training. It took me from a middle of the pack runner to a Boston qualifier. It explains the demands placed on your body in training for a marathon and what it needs to recover and how to focus your runs so that each time you hit the pavement, you do it with a purpose (i.e., no more "junk" miles). I use the training guides in the back of the book religiously. If I'm ever away from home more than a few days, this book goes with me!! I've given it to at least 4 other people. In my opinion, no runner should be without this book.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and dynamic.......2007-05-07

Advanced Marathoning presents a variety of training programs as well as information relevant to marathon training at large. The book is itself well written and comprehensive. It is not a *fun* read like Hal Higdon's Marathon training book, but is more pointed and helpful for a serious runner.
Why to buy this book:
-Valuable information--The research and details are second to no other book I have seen. This book explains why the training plans work, not just what to do.
-Training programs--The training programs have been the most helpful. They are more detailed than most plans which just give you a daily mileage or say "tempo".
Why not to buy this book:
-Redundant information--All of the data in the book can be found on the internet with relative ease. There is no new data presented (even if it was new at the time of initial publication). If you just want the data peruse the internet.

5 out of 5 stars good.......2007-01-03

5 out of 5 stars Just the motivation I needed.......2007-02-08

I found this book in my last few weeks of training for my first half marathon. I read the whole thing in a matter of days. It was exactly what I needed to get mentally prepared for the race. Many marathon training books are all about the running. This book is about the 90% mental component of any race/sport. It does offer very usual tips about physical preparation, but it's true value is helping the 'everywoman' realize she, too, can achieve this goal. Congrats to the authors for writing such a truly real, useful and inspirational guidebook.

5 out of 5 stars Now this will get you off the couch!!.......2007-01-20

This work does do a great job of providing some very helpful instruction for properly preparing your body to take on the marathon but it is sooooo much more than that.

It speaks so well to the importance of setting a real life changing goal and enjoying both the journey along the way and the reward you will most certainly realize for staying the course.

This book will help you condition your body to tackle the 26.2 miles of the marathon but just as importantly it will open up your heart and mind to just how much good you are capable of doing for yourself and for others.

5 out of 5 stars Change Your Shoes!.......2006-08-10

My sister ran her first marathon a few years ago and has been trying ever since to get me out of the house and into the gym. Nothing really worked until she handed me this book. I was expecting a beginner's step-by-step guide to training for a marathon. The book does provide very detailed information about how to start training, how to outfit yourself from head to toe, and even includes a week-by-week training guide. What I didn't expect was the personal stories that accompanied the training information. Not only do the authors share their own reasons for running their first marathon, they talk to several other women who relate their personal stories and explain why they felt compelled to take on such an enormous challenge.

When I finished the book, I was finally motivated to "change my shoes", as the authors say. I've started a regular exercise schedule which includes running 4 days a week. I'm not ready to tackle a marathon just yet but I know that I will have all of the information and inspiration I need in this book when I AM ready. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Guide.......2006-08-03

My wife recently decided she wanted to tackle a marathon although she had never run a race of over 10K before in her life. I did some research on the internet and purchased a couple of books for her that focused on women and marathon preparation. My wife liked this book most because it was written from the perspective of two "non-athletes" who, much like her, wanted to take on this challenge but weren't sure where to start.

The book is very well written and provides sound training information but also some very personal and inspirational stories. Although written for women, I actually read the book myself and started making plans for my first marathon half-way through the first chapter. Definitely worth the price of admission.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2006-08-02

Incredible! I attended a book signing for Everywomen's Guide on Jekyll Island in July. The authors are just as beautiful as the stories themselves. Talk about inspiring! I was at the book signing for three hours just listening to stories from the book. I wasn't able to purchase a book myself (they had all sold out by the time I got there!!!), so Ms. Vilines read a few excerpts for me and my family. Motivating and inspirational! 5 stars from me.

Book Description

When you make a game of murder, be careful who the players are....Who could resist the mock-murder weekend at the charming Mimosa Inn-- certainly not bookstore owner and amateur sleuth Claire Malloy, who decides to bring her petulant daughter Caron along for some detecting. As the guests settle in for a weekend of sleuthing, dressed as their favorite literary detectives, many a Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot stand poised to solve a murder. But fiction becomes alarmingly real, as the mock-murder victim isn't just playing dead-- he's really been bashed to death. More determined than even to find the killer, Claire combs the grounds of the lovely inn for this most uninvited guest.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Mystery.......2005-07-04

This mystery reminds me of the Agatha Christie novel, And Then There Were None. Guests come to the Mimosa Inn for a "mock" murder weekend only to find that one of the actors has actually been murdered. It was interesting to discover all the actors' true identities as their mock "storylines" had me convinced that they were someone else. The silly thing about this book is Claire's lack of supervision of her daughter with a murderer running around. Also, I think reading the first novel would be advisable as there is obviously a prior storyline between the Detective and Claire. Overall, it was a fast, light read.

4 out of 5 stars MURDER ISN'T A GAME!.......2003-04-01

Taking a break from the daily bookstore grind, Claire decides to get away from it all and drafts her daughter Caron to accompany her on a mystery murder weekend at the Mimosa Inn. Her boyfriend Peter Rosen (an investigator with the Farberville police department) scoffs at the whole idea of solving a pretend murder. This only makes Claire more determined to take part in the mystery murder weekend and become the person who solves the murder.

To complicate matters, Lt. Rosen shows up at the Inn shortly after Claire, who is positive he is only there to show her up. Clues are dispersed to the mystery participants up until the point when the murder victim turns up murdered for real.

With a situation like this, it's a given that Claire will try to out-sleuth Peter, and only get herself in harm's way. And with Joan Hess's comic flair and skillful plotting it turns into a pretty interesting read. It's the kind of book you want to read when you just want to get away from it all for a bit. Actually I enjoyed the book so much; I grabbed her A Diet To Die For from my bookshelf as my next book to read. (Also reviewed today on Amazon.)

4 out of 5 stars Deadly Game.......2002-06-29

Here's an intriguing tale in the "traditional/cozy" mystery genre. Claire Malloy drags her reluctant teenaged daughter, Caron, to a murder mystery weekend at the Mimosa Inn. Claire, bookstore owner and amateur detective, is determined to solve the mystery and win the prize: champagne. It's not that she wants to outwit the charming and disarmingly sexy local police detective, Pete Rosen. It's just that...well....The game progresses until, suddenly, the "victim" turns up dead. Really dead.

This is an early Hess mystery -- the second, I think, and her devil-may-care style is just developing. MURDER AT THE MIMOSA INN is unpretentious and good entertainment, almost as much fun as actually attending a murder mystery weekend.

Sunnye Tiedemann (aka Ruth F. Tiedemann)

4 out of 5 stars A classic Joan Hess mystery!.......1999-11-08

Joan Hess, creator of the Maggody series, introduces a new slueth in this amusing romp. Claire Malloy is wonderful as the bored bookstore owner looking for some excitement in her life. Claire's daughter Caron is every mothers' teenaged nightmare. The book provides a great introduction to this series of amateur detective fiction at it's funniest.

1 out of 5 stars The title is the best thing about the book.......1998-09-18

Joan Hess's "The Murder at the Murder at the Mimosa Inn" begins with great promise as Claire Malloy takes her daughter to the Mimosa Inn for a mystery murder weekend. Claire is obsessed with the idea of solving the mystery and winning the Champagne prize, and her efforts are amusing as she runs around gathering clues and viewing the other guests with inordinate suspicion. For roughly the first half of the book, the story is enjoyable, particularly when Peter Rosen, an actual cop and Claire's friend, lover, and competitor, shows up on some sort of secret mission.

When the mock murder is interrupted by a real murder, though, the story turns into a farce of tragic proportions. Claire turns out to be obsessed with interfering in the investigation of an actual murder while placing her daughter in jeopardy. It is a reasonable criticism of mysteries, particularly cozy mysteries such as this, that murder is often treated too lightly. Here, especially, the real murder never takes on the feel of anything other than the entertaining diversion of the staged theme murder for the weekend.

Nothing about the second half of the book is convincing. With a real murderer running around, for example, Claire is more concerned with solving the crime than with ensuring her daughter's safety by leaving. And the cop, rather than protecting the guests, illegally forces them to stay in the hotel with the murderer. The "game" of the real murder becomes truly absurd when Claire starts blurting out statements told to her in confidence by Peter (the cop). In short, the characters seem very real when they're solving a pretend murder, but when it comes to a real murder, they act in extraordinarily bizarre ways, and the novel suffers immeasurably as a result.

The thrilling conclusion to the award-winning fantasy trilogy that began with A School for Sorcery....As Gray Becq is about to discover, there are fates worse than death. It has been a full year since his escape from the Dire Realm. A year since a fellow student--having used his powers of sorcery to league himself with dark forces--betrayed him. Locked him away in a world beyond time, a world of unspeakable evil and unbearable tortures. Had it not been for Tria Tesserell and her extraordinary powers, he surely would have died. Now he almost wishes he had. For no sooner has Becq adjusted himself to the familiar surroundings of The Lesley Simonton School for the Magically Gifted than a series of horrible accidents occur. Suspicion falls on Gray. Could he have brought a demon back with him from the Dire Realm? To find the truth, Gray will have to confront the most powerful demon he has ever faced: the demon that lies within.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars When the plot unravels.......2006-01-14

        E. Rose Sabin's fantasy trilogy spins to a fast-paced, unsatisfying finale in "When the Beast Ravens." It starts with a suspenseful murder mystery and some serious personal issues, but unravels in the final chapter, as if Sabin had gotten sick of the story.

It's been two years since Gray Becq was kidnapped and enspelled in the Dire Realms. He returns to the Lesley Simonton School for the Magically Gifted, but can't shake his paranoia and fear. And then odd things happen: wands and talismans go missing, and rooms are ripped up. Then a student is near-fatally attacked.

As more students die and the mystery deepens, Gray gets more moody and erratic, and even has lapses in memory. Did he bring a demon back from the Dire Realms? To find the answer -- and the murderer -- Gray must team up with the two powerful young Gifted who almost destroyed the school two years ago...

Though there are a few references to the prequel, this book mainly stems from "A School for Sorcery," a sort of wizard-high-school book. Sabin's writing has improved greatly, and this is tighter, tenser story with plenty of potential. But the ending just sort of putters to a stop.

The first nine-tenths of the book are exceptional. Sabin spins together fantasy -- demons, spells and shapeshifters -- with a compelling murder mystery. Additionally, panther-girl Lina gets captured and interrogated by some nasty police who hate the Gifted. Some truly great storylines, especially Gray being forced to trust and care for his nemesis Oryon, and some of them blossom over the course of the book.

Unfortunately, the solid storyline unravels by the end. After some truly touching, moving scenes, we're treated to a silly trial scene that includes the dead accusing their murderer. All I could think of was "bring out your dead." The final pages seem tacked on, and Gray's final decision seems completely out of the blue.

If "When the Beast Ravens" is the end of E. Rose Sabin's trilogy, then it shouldn't be one. Starts strong, continues strong, and finishes very, very weakly. Here's hoping that Gray's story isn't over yet.

5 out of 5 stars delightful trilogy for Harry Potter fans.......2005-01-07

After being taken by the dire women into their dimension, he was tortured and changed into a beast. Gray Becq is no longer enamored with the Lesley Simonton School for the Magically Gifted though he returns there following his summer vacation. He quickly gets into a fight with two of the people who summoned the creatures from the Dire Realms.

Not long after somebody steals artifacts from the students and a demon enters this world. The Headmistress believes that Gray's return from the Dire Realm allowed the demon to enter this dimension. The concern is that they have no spell to send the demon home to the Dire Realm. The students are guarded with seemingly unbreakable spells, but someone manages to do the impossible. Everyone concludes that a killer is bringing in demons from the Dire Realm and using them to break the safety spells. Gray discovers that he hasthe power to travel through different timelines and dimensions. His former enemies join forces with him to battle their common foes and send the demons back to the hell where they belong.

This is the final book of a delightful trilogy that ties up the loose ends from A SCHOOL FOR SORCERY and A PERILOUS POWER, which obviously means reading the previous novels first. The climax is awesome as the students put aside their jealousies to forge a team knowing this is the only chance, remote as that is, to defeat the overwhelming adversaries. Fans of Harry Potter will enjoy this fine series especially this terrific conclusion.

It is comprehensive, with a wealth of additional resources; it is infinitely readable; and--best of all--the author understands and addresses the psychological as well as the physiological and logistical problems of aging and dealing with older relatives and friends. It belongs on the shelf next to the dictionary in every home--if, that is, you can put it down long enough to place it on a shelf. Book Description

Brightly colored Stangl Pottery earthenware bird figurines were made in New Jersey from the 1940s into the 1970s. The very similar Pennsbury birds were hatched in Pennsylvania during the 1950s by former Stangl employees. Today both companies' wares are eagerly sought by collectors in all parts of the country. In this first book of its kind, Mike Schneider shows the entire Stangle Birds of America series plus 60 examples of Pennsbury birds in beautiful individual color photos. There is also a chapter on the little known but highly desirable Stangl animal figures. This user-friendly book, in which the Stangl birds are listed by the model number, also includes an alphabetically arranged name index for complete and easy cross referencing and close up photos of marks. A price guide based on the current market makes this beautiful volume an invaluable tool for collectors and dealers.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST and ONLY book on the subject. .......2005-11-04

Excellent book. Wonderful pictures, almost the entire collection is pictured. Information is clear and precise. Prices are higher than what today's economy can support but that seems to be the way with all price guides. I highly recommend all of Mr. Schneider's books, they're very well written, pictures are clear, price guides are realistic and they're extremely user friendly.

The weighty Collector's Encyclopedia Of Stangl Artware, Lamps And Birds Identification & Values by Robert C. Runge Jr. offers a pleasing layout which lends to quick reference: color-coded sidebars of values accompany bright color photos and a guide which packs in Stangl company history and issues and reissues in an invaluable guide. Very strong recommendations for avid genre collectors, indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Good for ID, Comprehensive.......2003-02-15

Helpful for ID'ing pottery, not good for values, it's very out of date. Very good for Art Pottery, the shape guide at the back is helpful. Overall I still consider this the "bible" of Stangl.

              1 out of 5 stars don't waste your money.......2002-11-08

The main disappointment in this book is that most of the photos were in black and white and poor quality. The book is overpriced for the level of information given and useless photos. The books by Robert Runge run circles around this one- hands down!

1 out of 5 stars Outdated and very CONFUSING.............2002-01-22

Whatever information I gleaned from this book, I had to work very hard to obtain. Firstly, the type is so small, it is dificult to read across the columns fron the item to the value without the aid of a straightedge for guidance. The larger, hard bound books are much easier for us with aging eyes to read! And the values are so old they are now unrealistic and are of no help.

I found it very confusing to use this book, as it is almost arranged alphabetically, but then has groups of items taken from categories that make sense and lumped into hodgepodge chapters with no apparent reasoning. Several dinnerware patterns can not be found in the dinnerware chapter, but are in three other non-related chapters! In several places you are referred to other sections or chapters, but those sections don't exist. Also, the text makes reference to items that are not described or pictured, and there are pictures of pieces that are not described or listed in the text.

While the book may be helpful to some, to me it appears to have been hastily put together by someone who either didn't care about or fully understand the subject. I purchased the book for more information on the Stangl North Carolina Stoneware, but that chapter was left completely out! I am greatly disapointed and would sooner recommend someone to research values on Ebay before purchasing this book.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful and informative.......2000-05-23

This is a great book for background and information on Stangl pottery. Serves as an excellent resource by providing market value to individual pieces. A must for the online auction bidder.

Without a good book for reference - collectors have to scan several - well - this book has it all - patterns - prices and good photos - remember price guides in any book are subject to local and regional trend - so don't get caught up with BOOK PRICES. Buy what you like for a price you think fair. Go buy the book - can't wait for the next one.

This is one of the finest reference books in the industry today. Thoroughly researched and no stone left unturned, in fact, a remarkable manuscript by anyone's standards. I can hardly wait for his sequel to come out on Stangl Artware, Lamps and Birds. I hear its going to be a doozy!!

I strongly suspect that Mr. Harvey Duke still has a lot of his own books to sell and has sent one of his henchmen to "stir the pot". FOR SHAME!!

1 out of 5 stars Another Very Disappointed Customer.......2001-02-15

The book is awful. The color pictures are awful; so much for professional photography. Poorly-written text. "I have to wonder if the author and his partner have set the prices to reflect their current inventory as they are also dealers of Stangl & Fulper potteries," said it best. Don't waste your money on this or any other Runge book that may be promoted. In it for themselves.

This is just the best book ever on the subject, great photos, unbelieveable color. Very thorough history chapter, obviously written by someone who truly knows his subject and loves it. I am of the understanding that 100% of proceeds from the sale of the book provided the funds necessary for the Runges to establish the Stangl Pottery museum in Flemington. Fantastic book, fantastic people!!! When's book 2?

Jed Johnson: Opulent Restraint is the first book to chronicle the fascinating career, work and times of an interior design superstar whose life was cut short in 1996 by the disastrous explosion of TWA Flight 800. From humble beginnings in Minnesota, Johnson rose to prominence in nineteen-seventies New York, via the Warhol Factory, to the highest echelons of the rarified world of design and decoration. His impressive celebrity client list included Pierre Bergé, Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall, Richard Gere, and Barbara Streisand. Yet, with success and acclaim, he never lost his shy humility, generous spirit and quiet grace. Through a series of essays, project photographs and personal pictures we trace the influences on his nascent career, his special relationship with Andy Warhol and his magical affect on others. Many never-before-seen photographs are included by important photographers, among them: Cecil Beaton, Francesco Scavullo, Billy Name, Jack Mitchell, John Hall, Elizabeth Heyert and Warhol himself. Opulent Restraint is a must have book for every interior design office and for those interested in the fascinating Warhol years in New York. Interior Design magazine called Johnson “a great talent” whose “spirit lives on in a stunning legacy of interior design.”

5 out of 5 stars A Glorious Piece of Work.......2006-05-17

Having recently read The Warhol Diaries and seeing pictures of the brothers Johnson in Scavullo's retrospective, I went in search of more information about them and found this title. First of all, the quality of the book is amazing, between the text, the photography, and the projects. Secondly, how incredible that Jed Johnson was self-taught. He clearly had a wonderful eye and an amazing talent to have created these dazzling spaces that function as homes while never seeming untouchable or cold. Opulent restraint, indeed. I never knew the man and yet, feel his loss keenly.

One of the best books in interiors design I've ever read. Beautifull photos that almost need no explanation and the feeling of not having enough of turning pages, waiting breathless to see what's next. Congratulations to his brother and to all who participated in this homage.

                    Book Description

Digital Character Design and Painting is really two books in one: it teaches the fundamentals of character design, and the skills, tools, and techniques needed to master digital painting. Character design is all about ideas and how to put those ideas together to create a look and feel for a character. It's about creating a character that elicits a specific emotion from viewers—fear, joy, anger, sadness, etc. Character design does not have a standard creation process, but there are basic principles that can be followed. Digital Character Design and Painting explores these principles and teaches conventional artists how to enhance their skills to bridge the gap between traditional and digital art. All of the fundamentals of character design, from artistic design issues and character development to physical details of the character are explored.

Unlike character design, digital painting is not so much about ideas as it is about the combination of method, technique, and artistic theory. It is about making something that will be viewed in two dimensions imitate three dimensions. Using a variety of practical Painter 7 tutorials, artists learn how to apply traditional painting techniques with digital tools. Details on sketching, color theory, lighting, and texturing are also covered, along with specific techniques for painting trees and foliage, eyes, faces, hair, clothing, and fur.

Using these practical techniques and procedures, artists can learn how to create and beautifully illustrate their own life-like or fantasy characters for games, movies, or other commercial productions.

This book is not bad but, The lessons seem to have a lot of steps left out of almost every lesson. I found it hard to follow a long. One minute the page has a sort of ugly sketch to follow a long with. Tun the page and that sketch has been turned into a very realistic painting with no real explanation as to how it got that way. I think this book is better if you already know what your doing when it comes to painting realistic characters and designing them, but then one could argue whats the point in getting this book also seeing as it cost a bit munch.

4 out of 5 stars AWESOME BOOK ABOUT CHARACTER DESIGN.......2005-01-19

This book is totally out of this world on the topic of character design. Very detailed and well thought out. I will definatly recommend it to designers and artists.

Not only is this book excellent because of what you will learn from a master, but the physical book itself is of the highest quality, which of course is very important because you will no doubt turn to it repeatedly for guidance and inspiration. A beautifuly crafted book. The cd is most helpful. Enjoy!

                    Dear Mr. Seegmiller:

I've long been an admirer of your fantastic creations. You kinda became who I wanted to grow up to be ;-), so when I found you had published a book, I ran to get a copy.

Just wanted to let you know that this is the first of hundreds of art books in my library that is everything I'd hoped, and much more. I've had some
art training (mostly with folks who were better artists than teachers) and have learned a lot from books, as well as lots of drawing and painting on my own. I've participated in numerous exhibitions and group shows. Never have I had the pleasure of "sitting" in the company of such a fine, generous, exacting and specific educator, who is also one of my most admired artists.

The quicktime movies, so unselfishly revealing of your methods and creative processes, would have been worth twice the cost of the book. I'm studying them on a frame-by-frame basis, and gaining so much insight into what was heretofore theory alone. A weekend seminar could easily be developed from any one of these.

So thanks mightily from a very enthusiastic student at a distance.

                    Regards,
                    Bob Goldberg

This one reads like a crash course in digital character painting as interpreted by a fine artist of obvious expertise. It uses Corel Painter 7 as the base tool and is aimed at intermediate users (says so on the back). The best things about this book are (a) an effective balance between fantasy and reality, image- and tutorial-wise, (b) all-color (four-color) pages, so you know 'exactly' what color you're supposed to pick and what shade you're required to get, and (c) QuickTime movies on the accompanying CD that show the author deftly turn a b&w sketch into a finished piece. (Neat). This book is more about ideas than trickery, techniques rather than formulae - so don't expect too much hand-holding or quick fix tips. It lays a good foundation early on and builds upon it - though I'd recommend being comfortable at least with some basic sketching as most tutorials begin with a pre-made pencil drawing and proceed thenceforth into painting. In the end, this book stands head-and-shoulders above the rest primarily due to its inspiration and reusability value for artists (both digital and fine). It's natural to feel a little overawed by the author's seemingly effortless mastery of the subject, but if you're in the market for a solid, articulate tome with real-world skills and advice, trust this one to deliver (and deliver quite well), for it does just that.

                    Book Description

Digital Character Design and Painting: The Photoshop® CS Edition, is a completely updated version of this beautifully illustrated, full-color book. In the first edition, users learned digital skills using Corel® Painter(TM) but in this edition, all the techniques have been updated and modified for use with Photoshop CS. The book provides a unique combination of ideas and techniques that teach both the fundamentals of character design and the skills of digital painting. It explores the key principles of design and teaches conventional artists how to enhance their traditional skills and transfer them to the Web, computer/video games, commercials, and film production work. Using a variety of tutorials and exercises, artists employ Photoshop CS to learn the techniques, methods, and artistic theory of digital painting. They explore how to create images that will be viewed in two dimensions, but actually look three-dimensional. And, they work through detailed projects on sketching, color theory, lighting, and texturing, along with specific techniques for trees and foliage, eyes, faces, hair, clothing, and fur. Using the practical ideas and techniques covered here, artists learn how to create and beautifully illustrate their own life-like or fantasy characters for games, movies, and other commercial productions.

2 out of 5 stars Not That Good.......2006-12-07

Do not buy this book unless you have a solid background in painting fine art. Do not buy this book if your are expecting to learn the mechanics of how to paint in Photoshop. I have been working on one of the tutorials for about four weeks and have only come somewhat close to the results that the author demonstrates in the book. I must have done the tutorial about 20 times over so far. I can attribute this to two things: my lack of technical knowledge of how to paint fine art and the lack of information from the author about how to achieve the results that he is demonstrating. It's particularly frustrating when the author says, "continue to refine the painting" or "begin to clean up the contours" without explaining how exactly that is done using Photoshop. This whole book is supposed to be about painting with Photoshop but the whole process is never really dissected and explained. There is one short chapter on blending in Photoshop but it doesn't really help you all that much when you are going through a tutorial on how to paint something as complex as a a portrait of a face. I found the tutorials to be just brief overviews on how the author painted a particular piece. I would rather have one tutorial about how to really paint in Photoshop instead of 10 that just give you an overview of the process. The rest of the book is only mildly interesting. Why not have tutorials that delve into specific techniques like blending (briefly covered in book), shading and highlighting. How about getting into what brushes you would use to achieve certain effects. Or, how to use the opacity settings in combination with different types of brushes to achieve certain effects. I could go on and on. These are the kinds of things that I thought this book would cover; unfortunately it did not.

3 out of 5 stars Book is more for Beginners.......2006-08-04

This book was somewhat of a let down for me since I thought it would focus more on intermediate/advanced digital character design techniques using Photoshop CS. Most of the book is aimed for the beginner (or pre-beginner). However there are a few usefully chapters near the end for more advance graphic professionals.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for digital painting.......2006-03-04

Ive done just about everything else with photoshop and wanted a good book on digital painting so I could use my traditional art skills in that way. Its a good amount of content for the price and it has some really nice tips on creating your own brushes. The tutorials are pretty much step by step, although a little more info would have been nice. A lot of the process depends on your own ability and experience with the pen and tablet. So, overall I'd say its a good resource.

Also, it's from 1999 so some of the info is out-dated.

This is a good book and it has good info, some of which I didn't know before, but I think it needed more good pictures. There are some cool pics, but also some dumb ones, so I gave it 4 instead of 5. It has a pic of BSB holding tennis raquets in front of their faces. WHY? I dunno. I guess it's supposed to be funny. Still, I think that any BSB fan would enjoy this. Most likely their official book is better. Maybe you should take a look at that first.

This book is really great! It has recent info and recent pictures of the boys from the time when they released their sophmore cd and recent stats of the boys. It has pictures of some of the boys girlfriends and also serves as a bsb scrapbook, there is a part in the book where you can put your favorite bsb picture and you can fill out stuff about why you love the bsb and why you are a fan. I enjoyed the pictures the most because they were recent and not old. I recommend this book to any bsb fan out there!
