Entertaining and Erotic from Start to Finish.......2006-01-25
In the last year I've discovered the real "lesbian" in lesbian erotica - women having sex with women. Sometimes that can be hard to find in a tome with "lesbian erotica" or "lesbian sex" in the title. Not so the books from Bella Afterdark. I've read several of their anthologies, a novel and most recently this collection of novellas and have discovered enjoyable reads about the pleasures of women sharing love and passion with other women.
This collection contains a wide range between the four novellas. None of the four are anything like the others. One dark and spooky, one hilarious, one light and creepy, and one that made me bawl like a baby. Interwoven were moments of pure lesbian passion, the joy of female explorations and sex. It was entertaining from start to finish.
If I have a complaint it's that there was plenty of plot to get in the way of lots of sex, but if you are looking for good, strong stories that also get you hot, this volume is *exactly* what you're looking for. I would recommend that the stories be read separately as the styles are very different. For example, Barbara Johnson begins with sex on page 1 while Therese Szymanski makes you wait quite a while for the payoff. Julia Watts brings lots of laughter in with sexy moments, while Karin Kallmaker turned me on with a character's memory early in the story, then left me in tears by the end - and yet feeling unbelievably positive and hopeful about, well, the universe.
These stories left me in a positive frame of mind, though a happy ending wasn't always the case. There weren't only goodie-two-shoes lesbians, either, but heroines and villans, larger-than-life and so real you think they probably live next door. That, to me, takes real skill on the part of the all the writers. It's part erotic, wholly great storytelling and I enjoyed every page. It was worth the time and money.

Splitting a main character into two parts that compliment and confound each other has worked well for mystery writers from Conan Doyle to Rex Stout (and for non-mystery writers such as Patrick O'Brian in his Aubrey/Maturin sea stories). Reginald Hill's unique contributions to this form are his books about two policemen in an unnamed city in Northern England, Detectives Dalziel (pronounced "Dee-al" in the TV version) and Pascoe. Both get to show off their strengths and shortcomings in this wonderfully macabre second book in the series; Dalziel's brawn and instinct meets Pascoe's intellect as the two investigate pornographic "snuff" films in which the actors really wind up dead.
Book Description
Love, or at least pornography, are for sale at the arty Calliope Kinema Club on posh, proper Wilkinson Square. According to Yorkshire police superintendent Dalziel, it's all legal. Detective Peter Pascoe, however, doesn't believe it. His dentist, who knows real broken teeth and blood when he sees them, insists that the pretty actress wasn't playing a part when it happened. But the action that puts Pascoe into the picture is homicide. The sudden death of the Calliope's proprietor soon turns a sleazy sex flick into serious police business. And now Dalziel and Pascoe are looking into the all-too-human desire for pain, pleasure...and murder.

Another page turner.......2006-09-30
The Dalziel and Pascoe series is humming along nicely by the time you get to this, the fifth book in the series. This particular book delves into the shady world of porn films and touches on the even more macabre genre of "snuff" films. As can be expected from this plot iine, the characters that these two coppers come across are shady indeed. Dalziel almost seems at home in this scenario, but Peter Pascoe's put into some dicey situations that put into question all his ideals and morals. And Dalziel uses Pascoe's innocence to help ferret out some of the dicier details. This is an excellent book, and another strong entry in this long-running series. Hill is a very clever writer and his plots are even cleverer still.
The early books are good, but this is where it really takes off.......2006-04-05
In the fifth book of the series, Dalziel and Pascoe have been working together long enough to have formed a good partnership. So Peter Pascoe is surprised when Dalziel dismisses a lead Pascoe is given on a porn film that may be more than it seems. Pascoe's dentist is convinced that one scene in the current offering at the local private film club was not achieved by special effects, but showed a genuine beating--one severe enough that the actress might well have died as a result.
Pascoe pursues the matter in spite of Dalziel's disinterest, and won't drop it even when the dentist is accused of molesting an underage patient. When the elderly owner of the film club is found beaten to death, Pascoe suspects a link with his investigation of the possible snuff film. As he digs deeper it becomes clear that there's something very nasty going on. But there are a good many threads to untangle before he uncovers the full story.
As usual with this series, this book is a well-crafted police procedure with stylish writing and a good deal of humour, though Hill never trivializes the crimes he describes. The book is self-contained and can be read without having first read any of the previous books. There's some development of the long term story of the main characters, with the introduction of Sergeant Wield, and a look at the early months of Peter and Ellie's marriage. Ideally the series should be read in order, but this entertaining and thoughtful book makes a good startng point if the earlier books aren't available.
Hill begins to hit his stride with Dalziel and Pascoe.......2003-01-26
Detective Inspector Peter Pascoe's dentist, who is used to seeing broken jaws and broken teeth, tells Pascoe that a scene in an X-rated film where a women is beaten is real, not staged. This leads Peter and his wife Ellie to check out the Calliope Kinema Club, a trendy venue for soft-core porn in an otherwise proper and well-to-do neighborhood.
Sergeant Wield already has the place under surveillance, due to neighborhood complaints and scandalized locals, but Wield and Pascoe's Boss Superintendant Dalziel is skeptical that anyone is guilty of anything more than voyeurism until an indisputable murder turns up the heat.
The books are labeled the Dalziel and Pascoe books, but I always think of them as the Peter Pascoe / Ellie Pascoe / Edgar Wield / Andy Dalziel books, and all four characters get to shine in this one. Not as innovative as most of the later books in the series, but still an excellent police procedural, and well as showing much of the sly humor and characterization that makes Hill's books such a delight.
A solid, satisfying Dalziel/Pasco adventure.......1999-07-17
My copy of A Pinch of Snuff is a 21st printing; this book must be really popular. Reginald Hill's long-running Dalziel/Pasco series never fails to deliver a fine story. Detective Inspector Dalziel allows Detective Sergeant Peter Pasco to look into a report that the beating of an actress in a porn film appears to have been the real thing. Another case's investigation begins to overlap this one, and through step-by-step detective work, the story unfolds.
I enjoyed the story; it's hard to find a better British police procedural than those of Reginald Hill. I don't normally like or read British police procedurals, but Hill's in a class by himself. Read this one and whatever you do, don't miss his later books in this series. On Beulah Height, for instance, is a true masterpiece.

Underwood Under-performing.......2007-08-23
Michael Underwood's "A Pinch Of Snuff" deals with four insitutions in London: a gentlemen's club, the police, the law courts, and a group of anarchists. Each of these four has its own rigid set of rules and protocols.
The plot is just so-so, but the characters are pretty good. A young man named Brian Tanner is the center of everything but never initiates the action. He is like the ball in a pinball machine getting bounced around by each of the four institutions. Brian is neither stupid nor naive; he knows what is happening to him, but he is helpless to do anything about it.
I don't want to reveal the plot, but I have to mention one scene in the courtroom where Brian's barrister is cross-examining a key witness for the prosecution. It's like a spoof -- every cliche from every TV courtroom drama is present. Michael Underwood can do much better.

For Those About to Dip - I Salute You!.......2005-01-06
Now if you ask me, and a lot of snuss fans do now and again, this here book is a must have if you are inclined to take a pinch now and again. Also if you are inclined to use the more traditional method of inhaling the stuff to induce sneezing (which can be quite pleasant, but produces murky, brown snot) then I can recommend this here book as well.
Me and Mama used to dip quite a bit when we were courting, but once the kids come along we give it up because we didn't want them to commence doing it until they were in to their teens... so we stopped. One of the twins was asking about snuff (or snuss) the other day and I told her that we'd get her a can on her 15th Birthday so she could try it. Now she informs me that she will feel like a "big girl" when she can finally start to dippin'. Better that than a pierced tongue, I reckon.

Book Description
Freedom's Landing - read by Susie Breck, directed by Ruth Bloomquist
It's the dawning of a new age for mankind when the Catteni descend to Earth and easily overcome the Earth's population. Thousands are herded onto slave ships headed for the intergalactic auction block.
Kris Bjornsen is captured in Denver on her way to her college classes and wakes up on the primitive planet Barevi. Courageous and resourceful, she manages a single-woman escape from the Catteni and is living in the wilds of the planet when she comes to the aid of a Catteni soldier pursued by his own ranks. Recaptured together, they join forces with other slaves to outwit their captors and a hostile planetary environment.
Freedom's Challenge - multi-voice narration, directed by Ruth Bloomquist
Kris Bjornsen has come a long way since alien slave ships scooped her up in Denver with thousands of others. Dropped off on an apparently uninhabited world with the rest, she has fallen in love with Zainal, a renegade Catteni, and made a comfortable life for herself and her new family. But she feels a soldier's duty to escape Botany and rejoin the struggle for freedom.
Freedom's Choice - multi-voice narration, directed by Ruth Bloomquist
The shipments of Catteni slaves continue, but they find that they are enjoyably reinventing the creature comforts of home, and searching for the origin of the Farmers who were the original occupants of Botany, all under the keen eyes of two very different observers. When scouts for the Emassi come to retrieve Zainal, shanghaied in the original shipment of slaves, Botany changes irrevocably. Listeners will delight in this continued adventure of survival, romance, and ingenuity.

Unhappy abridgement.......2007-08-23
I have read all of the books in the Freedom Series and enjoyed them very much. When I purchased the collection on tape I thought I was getting the full version of each book, that was not the case. Each book is abridged to the point of losing the flavor of the original storyline.

Book Description
Motherhood can be one of the most intense and transformative experiences of a woman's life. While many books explore the do's and don'ts of effective parenting, few offer guidance on navigating the tumultuous inner experience of being a mother, with all its joy, pain, change, and uncertainty. Your Children Will Raise You explores the profound inward challenges and rewards of motherhood, from first giving birth to the empty nest. The editor—herself a mother of two sons—has chosen some of the most insightful writings about the emotional and spiritual landscape of motherhood—twenty-four essays in all—drawn from the best books, articles, and essays, as well as two original essays. The authors speak from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives, each exploring a unique dimension of the journey of motherhood. Your Children Will Raise You features writings by
Poet and novelist Louise Erdrich, who captures the sheer wonder and awe of early motherhood.
Ariel Gore—a self-described "hip-momma," fully in touch with today's youth culture—who reflects on the challenges of dealing with her own daughter's adolescent rebellion.
Journalist Joan Peters, who highlights the rise of the "Power Mom" and the risks of overparenting to our children and to ourselves.
Harville Hendrix and Helen LaKelly Hunt—husband and wife psychotherapists—explore why it is that our own childhoods so often come back to haunt us when we become parents ourselves.
Zen teacher Cheri Huber offers a spiritual perspective: sometimes it's us parents who need a "time out"—time to get in touch with ourselves so we can be more fully present and loving with our children.

These brilliantly colored, inexpensive dishes helped brighten The Depression when they were introduced in 1936, and are avidly collected today. Hundreds of color photographs chronicle Fiesta's many forms, from the most common to much sought-after rarities, and the dazzling spectrum of glaze colors which adorn them. Also included in the text is a history of the Homer Laughlin Company and examples of their manufacturer's marks. Updated values are provided for the various wares, along with an index and bibliography.
Customer Reviews:
Nice pictures of vintage..........2007-05-04
This book as some interesting info but not great. The book is 97% Fiestaware, most of that being the vintage pieces.
Being a collector of the post 86 Fiestaware, the book didn't do much for me.
Why can't we get a decent Fiesta Book?!.......2001-09-27
I don't care what Martha Stewart says. I love her show and all... but this book stinks and was the worst recommendation she has ever given!
There are just not really good books on fiesta ware out there. T
All this book was to me (i returned it as well) was a nice picture book with beautiful color representations. If I didn't care about the rip of price of [cost] I would have laminated it and given it to a baby as a picture book.
Outstanding photography and color accuracy just don't make up for the lack of valid information. I read the book cover to cover and I just missed the reference part of the book aside from a list of prices. It is full of errors and distorted information. When you do find something reference about the book it is mostly confusing or plain wrong.
Things are mislabeled... etc.
This is more of a coffeetable book than a reference guide.
Overall [the price] is too much for picture book.
A mixed bag of good and mediocre..........2000-04-02
I am not sure exactly how I feel about this book. On the one hand, it's got some excellent photos, beautifully lit, lush with color. On the other hand it is not in any way an exhaustive reference of Fiesta, as one would expect with a collectible as popular as this. I like the fact that photos are shown of the various backstamps (marks), but I'm not wild about the lack of organization and skimpy table of contents. I'd like to see more examples added, categories more organized, and prices more accurate (mind you, prices in reference books these days are hard to pin down, due to the affect of online auctions on collectibles). Long on nice visuals, short on information (and a bit too expensive for what one gets!)
Useful, fast reference, superior images.......2000-03-10
If I had gone by the first reviews I would have left this book alone and that would have been a mistake. If the text had errors in the past they are long one. The images are fantastic, the text is informative and very readable, the prices are right on target. Particularly good for those new to the field but of use to anyone. Maybe old reviews should be removed now and then. This is a great book!
Great Photos!!! Easy to use, good reference book!.......1998-10-05
I love this book!! I think that the photos are great very useful information.

Customer Reviews:
A nice primer but incomplete.......2007-03-31
This book was a nice start to get the brain going, but I found it failed to address important elements in kitchen design and renovation. As a soon to be owner-builder, I would love to see more in depth information on standard measurements, accessibility, and ergonomics in the kitchen. This book reviews the concept of zoned work spaces(replacing the outdated "work triangle"), but doesn't go into depth on the details of how to make it work, sympathetic zones that will flow into the next, or examples with components. While there are a few examples of improved design layout for renovation(ie: before and after), I would have loved to see many more detailed floor plans of kitchens that work efficiently and well with an explaination of why each does.
This book is a primer for cost analysis and lists some common kitchen features found in basic, intermediate, and gourmet kitchens. It contains general overviews of kitchen theory, and some tips on rennovation. This is a great book for getting started about thinking about kitchen redesign for someone who will be using an architect and general contractor. If you plan to list some ideas on paper and hand it to a professional, this book will help you assess some good ideas and the realistic expectations of the cost involved.
If you want to do your own design and hand it to a professional with the intent of reproducing what you have drawn, this book won't help you. The book, Independent Builder: Designing & Building a House Your Own Way (Real Goods Independent Living Books) is fabulous with in depth coverage of all aspects of home building, but I feel that with the complexity involved, a whole book of similar nature should be devoted to kitchens. Sadly, Kitchens That Work: The Practical Guide to Creating a Great Kitchen isn't it.
********* EDIT **********
Many thanks to the previous reviewer who recommended DK Home Design Workbooks: Kitchen. I heartily second the recommendation. Get that book instead of Kitchens that Work. It covers almost everything in this book, plus more comprehensive coverage of the HOW and WHY behind actually DESIGNING a kitchen.
I also second the recommendation of Build Your Harvest Kitchen. The information and pictures are a little dated, but Harvest Kitchen provides plenty of examples of insightful floor plans, why they work, and how you integrate the design into your own. There's quite a bit of information about harvesting your own produce, canning, jam making, and the like, but if you skip that and read the rest, it's definitely worth the read.
The best part? You can buy both Harvest Kitchen AND DK Home Design Workbooks: Kitchen(including shipping on both) for less than the cost of this one and gain much more knowledge and insight about kitchen design than by reading Kitchens That Work.
If you are designing/building a house, splurge on The Independent Builder and A Pattern Language to learn how to create the best design for your homebuilding needs.
Nothing Not Covered in Other Books.......2006-07-12
But still an OK good all round resource, albeit woefully short on design ideas. My first reaction was that it's not the book the other reviewers read, but maybe I was too hard on it. This is an edited review, and if I could change the number of stars, I'd give it three, anyway, having set it aside and picked it up again.
I have several other books that cover the subject very well--especially when it comes to function and design--and I've been through a remodeling, so a lot of what's in this one didn't seem new, thorough or insightful the first time I sat down with. Probably the rave reviews by other readers created unreasonable expectations that this would have some fabulous unique insights about designing kitchens that work AS KITCHENS. It doesn't, but it is very comprehensive when it comes to construction, working w/a contractor, avoiding on-site screw-ups, adapting kitchen layout to the spaces that surround it, etc., none of which should be given short shrift. Maybe that's what excited the other reviewers; guess that's the main perspective and expertise of the authors. It would be quite useful for someone who has not spent as many months [years, maybe] studying the subject and been through multiple additions and remodelings.
Don't buy this one for design ideas. It tries, but it's not even the best when it comes to function, though you might have high expectations based on the title. It's really pretty basic in that respect and focuses more on common mistakes that contractors find in designers' work, like 'that door is going to bump into that [wall/cabinet/doorway/etc.]. The most thorough book on my shelf when it comes to kitchen function [i.e., making using it efficient and comfortable] is good old (1980) Build Your Harvest Kitchen (Rodale Press). For creative design ideas, try DK Home Design Workbooks: Kitchen. For innovative, high style ideas, try Terence Conran Kitchens: The Hub of the Home. Another good one is Kitchen Redos, Revamps, Remodels, and Replacements: Without Murder, Suicide, or Divorce; also the New Kitchen Idea Book. I also have and like Joan Kohn's It's Your Kitchen. My current kitchen is based on ideas pulled from everywhere, including pages ripped from obscure magazines and stuff I found on the web. If you're not as inclined as I am to cast a wide net, maybe at least these brief comments will lead you to a book or two that will meet your needs. This might be one of them--if you're handing the contruction details yourself.
great for first-time remodelers.......2004-04-25
This book is great for planning, with a lot of details that would prevent a first-time kitchen remodeler from making a lot of mistakes. The authors give details such as standard counter heights that other books skip. The photos are terrific. It doesn't offer much for people who've been through several remodels or planning new kitchens in a custom home. They also omit to mention the tedium of microwaved food for six months, sliding completion dates and escalating costs (muliply time by three and money by two to get a real figure, and I'm not joking), and the reality of washing dishes in the bathtub. Reminder memo to self: you must prevent food scraps from ever reaching the tub drain- there is no garbage disposal.
A primer on good kitchen design.......2003-12-01
This book is a good primer on kitchen design and remodeling. It is one of the few willing to mention some real world issues such as "what's behind those walls" and "making sure doors don't get in the way of each other or traffic patterns" and of course "budgets". It doesn't presume the reader has a huge kitchen or budget to work with. It offers ideas that could help anyone planning a kitchen remodel. Its chock full of real world tips. I only wish they could have expanded on some issues that were simply mentioned: such as examples of using non-kitchen cabinet furniture in a kitchen design, and perhaps given xerox-able example lists of what to try to include in a given kitchen area as a starting point for readers to work with.
Soup to Nuts, This is the book to get.......2003-11-05
I bought Kitchens that Work at the same time I bought Great Kitchens, At Home with America's Top Chefs. I love Kitchens That Work, and am disappointed in the one about America's top chefs. If you are wondering what Mario Andretti's garage looks like, it is nothing like you would imagine. Probably more like a GM assembly plant. Top chefs think in terms of production, not beauty. One of the kitchens has bare cinderblock, unfinished on the wall. Very utilitarian with little warmth. Others are better than that, but I did not find anything inspiring in there.
Kitchens that work on the other hand, has every level of kitchen pictured. Some high end kitchens to dream of, as well as some a little more practical. The important thing as they mention is an intelligent design, that incorporates what you need, rather than the latest trend.
When I read some of the reviews on Kitchens that Work, I thought it would be lacking something, NOT! It has every consideration covered. Planning, layout, design, considerations when dealing with contractors, things to look out for when opening up walls, like hidden pipes for example, and the list goes on and on.
All I can say, "Soup to Nuts, This is the Book to Get" You could spend a year pondering all of the considerations they give you. Well done, definitely five stars.

Book Description
Los Angeles, the 1960s. Caught in the gaze of a most unique eye were a cast of the soon-to-be-reckoned-with second-generation Hollywood, future legends, friends and family. Everyone hanging out, working together, crossing lines between fantasy and reality, fashion, film, art, music, and life. Brooke Hayward gave Dennis Hopper a camera in 1962, shortly after the birth of their daughter Marin, and it was with this gift that he documented all that went on in and around his eclectic, bohemian home. He photographed family and friends like Jane Fonda and Roger Vadim, artists like Jasper Johns, musicians like Ronnie Specter and Ike and Tina Turner, the early fashions of Rudi Gernreich, and on and on and on. 1712 North Crescent Heights, edited by Marin Hopper, designed by Dimitri Levas and including a conversation between Marin, Brooke Hayward and Dennis Hopper, is an intimate collection of never-before-seen photographs from this vibrant and uniquely personal time. A subtle glimpse into a brief but tantamount time in their lives. A time that would forever be lost with the arrival of Easy Rider.
Customer Reviews:
Intriguing Images.......2002-05-28
These intriguing images, which range from sun-drenched to claustrophobic, have a dreamy quality, like a silent film. The photographs capture a graciously Bohemian culture that foreshadowed 1960's counterculture, and they faintly hint at the stylish decadence of 1920's Hollywood. They depict a time when the western regions of Los Angeles were both urbane and pastoral--a time when a starlet such as Tuesday Weld could feel comfortable driving on city streets in an open convertible--a time before personal style had degraded to the level of shaved heads, jauntily oriented baseball caps, and lapses in grooming. In photo number 120, the "Sunset Strip Riot" at Pandora's Box kicks off the 1960's upheavals that would be precisely defined by Dennis Hopper's Easy Rider just three years later. This photo is shot at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Crescent Heights, just down the road from the Hopper residence. In the background of the photo, behind the street action, is the site of The Garden of Alla, demolished 7 years previously, and perhaps the most prominent meeting place for the graciously Bohemian Hollywood crowd of the 1920's.

Dennis Hopper: Paintings, Photographs, Films
ASIN: 3775710302
Release Date: 2001-09-02 |
Book Description
Dennis Hopper, one of Hollywood's last great cult figures, is best known for his depiction of social outcasts in films such as Rebel Without a Cause and Apocalypse Now, as well as for directing classic films like Easy Rider. Hopper has also, however, made a name for himself as an artist and a photographer. His photographic chronicle of America in the 1960s, a decade marked by awakening and rebellion and documented by Hopper in forceful black-and-white pictures, has now become legendary. A System of Moments, published on the occasion of a major retrospective exhibition at the MAK, Vienna, is a kaleidoscopic documentation of painting, photography, film, and life. It is the first comprehensive publication that takes in to account all of the diverse artistic activities in Hopper's nearly 50-year career, and it examines particularly the subtle connection between genres that is a hallmark of his work. For the first time, recent photographic works, which emerged after a long hiatus from the medium in the 1990s, are also presented. A major retrospective that will be the definitive statement on Hopper's career.

Book Description
The California Pop-Up Book is a creative exploration of the California experience through 3-D op-ups, pull-outs, booklets, and narratives. Produced jointly by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Universe Publishing on the occasion of the LACMA exhibition Made in California: Art, Image, and Identity, 1900-2000, this extraordinary book highlights the dynamic relationship between the arts and the way the Golden State has been portrayed and conceived in the popular imagination. Whether promoted as the Edenic paradise early in the twentieth century or viewed as a mulitcultural metropolis of the future in our own time, California has exerted a profound fascination the world over for more than a century. Arranged chronologically form the Gold Rush to the Walt Disney Concert Hall (scheduled to open in 2003), this commemorative book will be a keepsake for audiences worldwide.
Filled with an array of surprises, the book features many of California's great treasures fashioned into pop-ups pop-ups, including:
-Balboa Park, San Diego

-Chicano Park, San Diego
-Egyptian Theatre, Hollywood
-Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco
-Hearst Castle, San Simeon
-The Mission Inn, Riverside
-Sea Ranch, Sonoma County
-Frank O. Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles
-Watts Towers, Los Angeles

Customer Reviews:
Pop-up is Tops.......2007-01-11
Now I know why I love California so much - this pop-up book tells it all! Well worth the money.
I have lazy eye.......2005-10-14
Even with lack of proper stereoscopic vision, due to serious lazy eye, the figures appear vivid and dimensional. The book includes a set of postcards that may be sent to taunt the less fortunate who haven't witnessed the wonders herein.
A Novelty Worth Having.......2004-07-01
As a California historian and author of the book: SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MISCELLANY, I found this California pop-up to be a charmingly fun novelty book to share when company comes over.
The Real California - in Three Dimensions.......2001-12-03
The book looks like it might just be a decorative coffee table item, but the content belies that impression. The pop-ups are fun and attractive, but the real story is in the choice of objects and the writing. The selections speak to the myth of California that was consciously created by early explorers, developers, and movie moguls but became its own reality as people migrated to the state ready to play the roles the myth-makers created for them. In exposing the history through objects and some remarkable writing by such as Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Carolyn See, Graham Nash, Alice Waters, Terry Gilliam, and Richard Rodriguez, the pre-mythic history and the development of a true California culture emerges...one in which the tinsel is a little tarnished around the edges, but glows as brightly as ever with its own special light.

Book Description
In this groundbreaking work, rock-n-roll writer and critic David Dodd presents some of the most powerful interviews with musicians, entertainers and athletes you will ever read. Shared here in their own words--and in many cases for the first time--are tales of life away from the spotlight and the glamour, of real people fighting the pain and desperation caused by addiction. Their candid descriptions of life before and after recovery--and their even greater achievements since becoming clean and sober--will leave an indelible impression on you. In chapters dealing with the different stages of personal transformation, those interviewed are able to share with you their unique experiences. The individuals included here pull no punches: they talk honestly and directly about battling addiction and playing it straight.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring true stories of recovery.......2001-01-28
David Dodd has assembled a wide variety of stories to inspire and encourage addicted people to get clean. I was impressed that Twelve Step groups were NOT the focus of every tale, and that the one constant was that each individual made a PERSONAL CHOICE to forego their addiction and live sober. For all the help some people get from 12-Step groups, there are many who don't "relate" to the religiousity. But this book shows that recovery is still possible and worthwhile. The fact that most of these tales are told by celebrities and artists we KNOW only increases their value. Plus, it's nice to know that my gut feeling about Steven Tyler is "on the money" - he truly IS a mensch!!
A wonderful book!.......1999-06-01
I was attracted to the many well-known names listed on the cover, but once I began reading the book, I was overwhelmed with its passion and solutions. David Dodd has done a remarkable job which is reflected in this collection of interviews. My favorite part, however, is the introduction to the book, where the author tells his personal story on how he became sober with the help of Steven Tyler. His vivid description of the events were astonishing to me, they were absolutely incredible. This is a wonderful book!

Dennis Hopper: A System of Moments
ASIN: 9056621955
Release Date: 2001-04-02 |
Book Description
Dennis Hopper's artistry has always extended to all facets of his life--from the films he as written, directed, and starred in, to his patronage of the arts and the avant-garde company he has kept, to his own photography and his painting. This new publication focuses on his paintings, which often refer to his cinematic and photographic work--Hopper incorporates photos and film stills into his canvases, arraying his works in diptychs and triptychs. Dennis Hopper: Paintings, Photographs, Films presents this complicated artist in all of his diversity, showing the outgoing public figure, the voyeuristic photographer, and, above all, the introverted painter. In addition to extensive full-color documentation of his paintings, Dennis Hopper: Paintings, Photographs, Films features texts--an essay by prominent art critic Rudi Fuchs and an interview between Hopper and Jan-Hein Sassen--that explore Hopper's visual art in unprecedented depth, situating him within the contemporary American art scene, and looking at his relationships with other artists, including Richard Diebenkorn, Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha, and Alex Katz.

Dennis Hopper: Paintings, Photographs, Films
ASIN: 0974707880 |
Book Description
Famous for his edgy acting roles (including Blue Velvet) as well as his directorial projects (like the counterculture classic Easy Rider), Dennis Hopper has also been a member of the Los Angeles arts scene for five decades, creating highly regarded paintings, sculptures, and photographs. Hopper embraced digital photography early, and Bucharest Nights showcases the best of his work in that format. Here is the city at night, painted in dark hues, the urban demimonde in all its grim glory. With the same kind of restless energy he brings to his film roles, Hopper pries into places, people, and moments others might pass up for lack of native curiosity. In a headlong pursuit of the essential and the evocative, this vibrant series of images captures specific places and times with a fearlessness and keenness of eye that is the hallmark of his work.
