Sexy AND sweet paranormal love story.......2006-09-24
This is the first of Emma Holly's vampire/shapeshifter (upyr) series (Hunting Midnight and Courting Midnight are sequels). Having read all three, I can definitely say this is my favorite of the set. The reason is the hero, Aimery. I absolutely love, love, love this hero. He is one of those great characters in romance that is ATYPICAL. First of all, he is scarred. An old injury has left his face severely scarred and is therefore automatically different than your run of the mill beautiful hero. Secondly, and probably much more importantly, he is a really great man. He is tender and gentle and treats the heroine (Gillian - the upyr to his mortal) with respect and genuine affection. He displays a willingness to put her needs and desires even above his own. This is truly refreshing after reading again and again about men who behave like unmitigated jerks to their heroines. So if just for Aimery's character alone, I would like this book.
I also found myself liking Gillian as well. The story kept me interested, and knowing that there are books that follow, you find yourself paying attention to peripheral characters you suspect you will meet again. Overall, I would recommend this book to any reader who enjoys a sexy AND sweet paranormal love story.
A new twist on a paranormal favorite.......2005-09-02
Told by her dying mother to escape plague-ridden London, ten-year old Gillian runs into the forest where she falls asleep. Gillian awakens to discover she is being fought over by a most unusual couple. The beautiful Nim Wei wears robes fit for a queen, while the gentle Auriclus is dressed in peasant garb. They are upyr, otherworldy creatures of the night who can shapeshift, and they have come to transform Gillian into one of them. Asked to choose who will be her creator, Gillian picks Auriclus. However, as soon as he changes her, Auriclus leaves her with a pack of upyr who shapeshift as wolves in the forests of Scotland.
Years pass but Gillian never adapts to life with the upyr in the wild. Not even the attentions of Ulric, the pack's leader, can still her yearning for knowledge and adventure. When she discovers Ulric's plan to make her his mate, Gillian escapes to relearn the world of humans. Along the way, she bonds with a falcon chick and the two decide to share their life. In her new falcon form, Gillian is able to venture out in the daylight. However, it is as a falcon that she finds herself caught by a man.
The younger brother of the baron of Bridesmere, Aimery Fitz Clare is many things. A war hero, a doting uncle, a master falconer and the unwilling love of his brother's wife. Eager to escape the intrigues of his brother's demesne, Aimery decides to train a new falcon but ends up with a far more wondrous creature. Gillian is drawn to the noble Aimery, while he dreams of a woman who comes to him in the night. When her secret is revealed, the two quickly become lovers. However, danger is near for an old nemesis knows Gillian's whereabouts and has come to investigate. Will Gillian and Aimery's love survive the coming storm?
Emma Holly has succeeded brilliantly in creating a rich, detailed world filled with exotic beings and the very essense of humanity. CATCHING MIDNIGHT is a feast for the senses, a story told in layers weaved together. The absorbing world of the upyr, the passionate romance that blooms between Gillian and Aimery and the troubled sibling rivalry between Aimery and his brother, are among the layers that blend together to create this lavish tale.

WASTE OF MONEY.......2004-08-22
---ONE STAR FOR THE STORY LINE.
The story line is catching, but the writing itself is abominable. I was recommended this book by a friend, and I will NEVER listen to her again.
The heroine is at best an "amateur" although she is very old in "human" years. She's lost and looking for someone to love her as she is. Now, the hero, is scarred and disfigured--yet his brother's wife is obsessed with him for some otherworldly reason.
The villains are by no means "evil". In fact, Nim Wei(the villain) seems to fall in love with the hero's brother, without even putting up a fight, of sorts.
IT DRAGGED! I WAS THINKING OF GOING BACK TO B&N FOR A REFUND! HORRENDOUS BOOK! DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY!
cathing midnight.......2004-04-07
i have just finished the book and i loved it. this was the first book i have read of hers and i am going back today to buy another.
How disappointing..........2004-04-06
I haven't read paranormal fiction since Anne Rice's first installments of the vampire chronicles, but I couldn't resist picking up a book from one of my favorite erotica authors. I was disappointed with this effort. Catching Midnight is a slow-paced, unfulfilling book in more ways than one. Holly's trademark eroticism -- the padding out, exquisite sexual tension between the characters -- is notably missing. It just doesn't have the boldness of Menage, the smoldering erotic scenes of Personal Assets or the incredible building of tension of Beyond Innocence and Beyond Seduction. Ironically, I read on Holly's web site that she began her writing career with fantasy fiction. However, I think she has a real knack for erotica and she shouldn't give up on that. She's still one of my favorite authors though. I've purchased several of her books, including Hunting Midnight, which, of course, is the follow-up to this one. I was told that Hunting Midnight is much better. If you haven't read Emma Holly, don't start out with this book. Read her smoldering efforts published by Black Lace or her historical/erotic romance efforts from Jove.

Pass with a capital "P.".......2006-06-12
My mother recommended this series to me because I'm a big fan of Jennifer Weiner and "larger women" stories so I jumped at the chance to read a story about a "queen sized PI." Let me tell you, I was sorely disappointed. I was so bored with the book that by the end I wanted to toss it in the garbage and just take the loss. Some of the dialogue is funny, but for the most part Eichler just repeats herself. The only character she created that I really liked was Ellen, and I HATE when books have no ending. She leaves you hanging, but takes time to plug her next book, and from reading the first chapter included with this story, has nothing to do with the plot of the book where she leaves you hanging! I had high hopes when I opened the book, and six chapters in, I didn't care whodunit and didn't really even want to finish the book. I'm sorry I wasted my money on this.
Disappointing.......2005-12-11
I'm a fan of mysteries with women heroines and I was excited when I discovered one to be a bit overwieght. I was highly disappointed with the writing and the plot was predicatble. Also, you felt cheated with the "spin" the author tried to put on it. It was one of those books where the main character seems to draw her conclusions out of no where and solve the mystery. Also, the fact that she wrote out the accents extremely heavy annoyed me. It's okay to imply that there's a heavy accent, but to write it out so unclear that you have to go back and reread to get the gist of what the person is saying is annoying. We get the point, the character has an strong accent.
Good and Cozy.......2004-11-22
This first book in the Private Eye "Desiree Shapiro" mysteries was pretty good. But advertised as a "Queen-Size Manhattan PI", which is why I bought the book thinking 'here's something different', there wasn't much reference to her being fat. The author could have done a lot more with that angle and should have since that is the series' signature mark. Still, the plot was fine; characters pretty good; and it was a fairly fast read. It was easy to keep track of what was happening. I found the writing to be charming, with a good sense of humor. I'll read another.
C-minus.......2003-07-27
Desiree Shapiro annoys the heck out of the police department when she investigates a murder in her neice's apartment building. She annoys the heck out of me too. Although she's pretty funny, the overweight idea is played out and doesn't add much. I kept waiting for her sideshow investigation of an old friend's seemingly unfaithful husband to tie in ingeniously, but it never did. The list of suspects is long and confusing, but in a bad way. Every other chapter ends with a (cheap) cliffhanger pointing to a different person, which I found annoying. The key point in the mystery could have been delightful in the hands of Agatha Christie or Dorothy Sayers, but in Selma Eichler's it's silly, obvious and not very plausible. But if you want a book to read in the bathtub or something, it's moderately entertaining.
Okay.......2002-10-22
Desiree Shapiro, plus-size private eye extraordinaire, is visiting her niece, when a murder takes place in the building. Desiree is immediatley called on to protect a young grocery delivery boy from being charged with the murder. Soon on there's another murder in the same building, and Desiree feels her detective work is getting her nowhere. Until she finally gets what she thinks is a lead, and turns out to be wrong.
Overall, this book was somewhat of a disappointment. Desiree is a likeable character, but the amount of relationships, characters, and situations, went a little overboard. I recommend this book to someone who is looking for a light mystery.

Book Description
The Power of God at Home by Bradley J. Wigger provides both a biblical model and practical suggestions for helping the entire family become aware of God's presence in everyday life. He thoughtfully reveals the powerful formative influence of family life and shows that homes are the places where some of the deepest, most important learning takes place. Wigger— a husband, father, and professor of Christian education— uses honest examples from his own family life that open a window to grace and encourage parents to take a second look at their own homes, their own faith, and how home and faith connect in their lives. The Power of God at Home offers a refreshing perspective on family life, revealing families as potential bearers of God's grace and blessing and telling us how we can play this role more intentionally and thoughtfully.

A Theological Foundation for Being Family.......2005-11-14
There are numerous advice books and "how to" suggestion manuals available to parents these days. These books are bestsellers because many parents are frantically seeking assistance with their important vocation. However the question remains-are these books compatible with a Christian view of parenting and childhood? Even so-called Christian books can adopt a foundation that is theologically-misinformed. Is the bestselling "how to" wisdom built on a solid foundation?
In The Power of God at Home Brad Wigger constructs a solid biblical foundation for family life. Using the patterns of the biblical story - "the rhythms of God" - he demonstrates how the narrative of Scripture can inform the way parents and children "be family." Using what Marcus Borg would call "the macro stories of scripture" Wigger shows how family life is informed by the great tradition of faith. For example, he uses the flood, the Exodus, the exile, the kingdom, and the crucifixion as a plot to illustrate the how homes can be places of grace and forgiveness that defeats displacement.
Saying the book is theological doesn't mean that it is stuffy. Wigger's text is full of personal stories, clear prose, and heart-warming wisdom that will help parents construct a vision for what the family might be. The book isn't a simple manual offering easy, one-size-fits-all solutions - and this is its strength. In practical (but not simplistic) ways Wigger has shown how The Power of God at Home can be a reality for normal families. I read it to understand how to nurture children, but in the process I was nurtured too.
Great Resource!.......2003-03-27
Dr. Wigger avoids the temptation of academia to produce a book of depth but accessible to all, a book that will be a great inspiration to parents, and to anyone in pastoral leadership seeking to help families. He draws from his extensive reading and research as well as his own experiences as a father of two; his book has both sound 'theory' and very practical ideas for how parents can nurture their children's (and their own) faith. I look forward to using it with our congregation.

Great Cookbook.......2002-01-28
The whole reason I got this book was because I want to incorporate more fish into my diet. The only thing that has stopped me from doing so in the past was that I didn't know how to prepare fish and I am new to cooking. I got this book and it is great. It has great recipes and give at least 2-4 substitute fish that you can use with each one. Another benefit is that each recipe includes a calorie, fat, saturated fat cholesterol and sodium count. And to top it all of they are fast and easy to prepare. Highly recommended and worth every penny.

During the 1980s, who couldn't resist cranking up the volume and grabbing that can of hairspray? When heavy metal hit the scene it roared and so did millions of fans. Today heavy metal records are a thriving collectible market, and the Goldmine Heavy Metal Record Price Guide is a must-have book for collectors. It is the first book to contain pricing information with discographies and descriptive notes to give readers the information they need to evaluate their collections. Must Have Record Guide.......2004-05-19
This is by far the best reference guide for collecting Metal on vinyl. Although a record is really only worth what somebody will pay for it, this guide gives you a nice ballpark figure of what to spend on an LP. It also includes entries on early pre-fame recordings of bands whose members went on to become somebody (ie: ELF featuring Ronnie Dio, Black Sheep with Lou Gramm, etc)....Rookie Cards if you will.
All of Martin Popoff's books have been informative, funny and entertaining, however, I don't agree with his views on Triumph.
A Must For Metal Collectors, But..........2002-03-15
Yes, this guide is a must have for all Metal record collectors. I would recommend it for CD collectors too, as it has a great discography of just about every metal band. But I was dissapointed to find out the author devalued many of the US record releases while raising the values of the UK releases. I know record collecting is more popular in the UK, but there are still many collectors here in the US too. This book makes it hard for the US collector to figure out what his collection is really worth. Case in point, GNR's banned robot cover sells for about five times what the guide lists by many dealers in the US. Anyway, I guees it is just a guide so don't take the values too seriously. Still, a great reference guide for the Metal Record collector.
MANDATORY.......2001-07-06
If you are into 80's Heavy metal and vinyl collecting you must get this books, which is mainly a catalog. It's very helpful on things as Band's LP's, EP's, release year, etc. If you have a missing LP from the 80's metal and don't know the label, year or even more, you want to complete your collection dig this.
Finally! Something for the "headbanger" collector.......2000-06-11
This book is perfect for those who simply have an interest or the hard-core collector of rock and roll's wicked stepchild, Heavy metal. Loads of photos, bios, and assorted gems, this takes some of the guess work out of ammassing one's collection. The only complaint I could possibly offer is that there needs to be more concentration on the newer sub-genres of Heavy metal (black metal, death metal, etc) although they are addressed.

This work, edited by two of America's most accessible public intellectuals, from Harvard University's Afro-American studies department, is a scholarly yet easy-to-read reference that serves as a cultural-literacy primer for the third millennium. Multicultural in scope, it contains concise and timely essays on everything from the Islamic origins of algebra to Chinua Achebe, the Dalai Lama, John Coltrane, Frida Kahlo, and Fannie Lou Hamer. Gates and Appiah also include figures of popular culture such as Amy Tan and J.R.R. Tolkien. What makes the work most impressive is the editors' search for "an understanding of other cultures that enriches without displacing" the achievements of Western civilization, showing how African, Afro-American, Hispanic, Asian, and European writers, politicians, and artists have all contributed. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Wonderful Reference Tool.......2000-08-10
This book is a great reference book to get the basic idea of an important person, place, or philosophy. It really is a book of global culture. It has many important western references as well as non-western or non eurocentric references. I like to just open the book for a few minutes whenever I am sitting near the bookshelf and learn something new. Each entry is about a half a page on average. Some are less some are more. There is really so much to learn about the world that our western education dosn't teach us. For example you can get a consice description of the French Revolution, or learn about Kuukai (774-835), a Japanese religious leader, or read about Macumba, an Afro-Brazilian religion. It's all here.
For those of us that didn't pay attention in History Class.......2000-02-04
This is my first time recommending a book and I couldn't have chose a better reference tool! As an American living in Europe, having never been intrigued by history, I often refer to this book during or after discussions as a fact checker. Highly recommended!
informative, rewarding, educational, historical accounts.......1998-09-12
I read this book this summer and the insight I gained cannot be paralleled. This book gives detailed accounts of people, places, and events of major influence in our time and in history. No one should be allowed to call himself/herself "educated" until she/he has read this book. What a wonderful resource!

Bo was the best.......2007-07-02
Bo Jackson is the greatest American Athlete since Jim Thorpe. For some reason, people don't recognize this fact enough. Most people would give that title to Ali, and to be sure Ali was superb. But no one that I can think of played three sports at world class level (football, baseball, and track and field) the way Bo did. You have to think about how incredibly difficult that is. He was such a natural at everything he tried that he could afford to devout only partial attention to a given sport at anyone time. In terms of pure natural gifts, Bo Jackson surpasses everyone else. But what is most remarkable in this story is how close he came to throwing that immense talent away. Sports was his salvation, that and his hard-driving mother. This book shows how sports can be a great positive outlet in a person's life. They provide an arena for focused action that serves to improve the individual through lessons of hard-work, team-work, and discipline. Even the very talented have to work for it, and Bo shows that in this blunt accounting of his life
I wish I knew what Bo Knows.......2006-06-15
This piece is a look at the upbringing of Bo Jackson. He discusses his past and what brought him to his successes in life. It is watered down with numbers and flashbacks of games that not many remember. The saving graces in this book are the stories in regard to charitable works Bo has done, as well as Dick Schaap and his mid chapter-per chapter writings.
This book is good for the twitch speed generation of parents to own to let their children one day know what the words: ownership, accountability, and work ethic really mean. Success is sometimes an afterthought.
~Angelo Markantonakis
More than One Chance.......2006-04-24
More than One Chance
I recently read the book Bo Knows Bo, Bo Jackson's autobiography. Bo Jackson was a pretty bad child and his career almost never happened. As a child, Bo Jackson twice almost pulled the trigger of a gun and shot and shot someone. He wasn't always a fan of practice and usually slept through team meetings. Bo got out of the ghetto when he got a scholarship to Auburn. While at Auburn, Bo played football, baseball, and did track for a year. A person he thought was a friend lied to Bo and cost Bo his eligibility his senior year for baseball when he worked out for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before the draft. He could've gone pro in either football or baseball but decided to go pro when he got drafted by the Kansa City Royals. After the baseball season, Bo would play the ten games or however many were left for the Oakland Raiders.
I like how this biography told about Bo's childhood because some biographies don't. I disliked how Bo was a problem child because he had so much talent. It is like Sports Century on ESPN Classic which is biographies of athletes on T.V.
SuperMan meets the Incredible Hulk = BO JACKSON.......2006-03-16
In my opinion, one of the greatest athletes to come along post-1970s (that generation had Ali, Wilt, Alcindor, Hank Aaron, Jenner, Hamill, Franco Harris, Evelyn Ashford, Archie Griffin, Bjorn Borg, George McGinnis ... some of the biggest names in sport!).
Fast. Big. Strong. (Did I mention Fast? Big? and Strong?)
This dude had all the physical gifts and the "can do" mentality of a super hero come to life!!!
Never seen anyone like him and probably will never again.
It's ironic that this two-sport All-Star, seeminly indestructible had his career hobbled to a stutter that fateful Jan. 1991 day on a football field.
This book gives you the inside on how a young Bo Jackson (aggressive and physically awesome even as a young kid) came all the way from Bessemer, Alabama, rose through elite football and baseball ranks to become the late-1980s megastud on the same dais of Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky before his injury.
It's an interesting tale with behind the scenes looks at how teammates and competitors in both the NFL and MLB interacted with him -- or should I saw competed in awe -- how Jackson came to hate Steinbrenner and how his family kept and continues to keep him grounded.
Here you had an athlete with ...
Carl Lewis' speed
Herschel Walker's size
Reggie White/Ray Lewis strength
Jim Brown's physical toughness
Barry Sanders' explosiveness
... and a "No feat too great or too tall" mentality ALL HIS OWN.
Bo was a champion who's athletic career was cut short too soon, leaving fans to always ponder "what if".

Bo Knows Bo is a good book. It's about Bo Jackson's life as a kid, and how he played professional baseball and football. It tells you about his childhood, and when he went to Auburn. It talks about his personal life, when he played baseball, and football, too. It has chapters when people like Howie Long write in the book.
I would recommend this book to sport fans or people how know Bo Jackson and want to know more about the real Bo Jackson's life.
