Some Danger with little Depth in "Dangerous Depths".......2006-09-22
Detective Hannah Sampson is back in her third adventure and this time dealing with what she believes was an attempted homicide. It was Sampson who was first on the scene when her friend Elyse Henry was thrown into the burning sea by an explosion aboard the boat "Caribbe." Sampson was asleep on board her own boat "Sea Bird" when the noise woke her up and she investigated. Despite her injuries due to the flames, she was able to rescue Elyse who now lies in the hospital in a coma.
For Hannah Sampson, she believes that the explosion and resulting fire were caused by foul play. Everyone else, including Chief Dun of the Tortola Police Department, believes it was just an accident. Elyse Henry, advent environmentalist especially in regards to the sea turtles and the coral reef, annoyed some of the natives in the British Virgin Islands and appealed to others. With no real evidence other than a gut feeling on Hannah's part, Dun wants her to move on to more serious and obvious matters such as who is breaking into charter boats and stealing stuff. Hannah is not about to let anything go.
What follows is a rather simplistic but enjoyable read. The second storyline of the break-ins on the charters is rather obvious as is the author's feelings on environmental issues. Frequently the narrative read stops completely as the groups are portrayed simplistically as either for or against the environment and the reader is lectured. Like the character development itself, the lectures are simplistic and cultural differences regarding native islanders are mentioned but basically ignored.
The main plot line is enjoyable however and holds a couple of minor surprises. Obviously, the author loves the area she writes about and that comes through clearly to the reader when she concentrates on her main plot and the beauty of the area. When that is in play, the story moves forward at a steady pace. Unfortunately, the lectures are frequent and not at all subtle or woven skillfully into the story and thus, stop the action and the reader cold.
The overall result is an average read at best. Simplistic on all levels, this is a pleasant diversion for a couple of hours.

As an avid reader of environmental thrillers, Dangerous Depths kept me intrigued until the last page. A great mystery with insightful character development by an author with obvious talent for writing/description.

Third in a great series. This book, in particular, will take you for a ride both above and underwater with enough twists and surprises to satisfy any reader. I have a love of diving and a healthy respect for the Sea. It is obvious Kathy Brandt does too. Through her facinating main character, Hannah Sampson, she tells a heck of a yarn, but in so doing gives us all a tast of beauty, danger, romance and the need to respect our "one earth" and its endangered species.

I sometimes anticipate what's going to happen next, i.e., who's going to get killed and how, but even when I'm fairly close, which is not very often, McEvoy goes way beyond my anticipation. As a bonus, there's a lot about horses, racing, and jockeys that I did not know, but found it was a pleasure to learn.
Great Thriller.......2006-05-06
In John McEvoy's second novel, also set in the idiosyncratic world of horse racing, you know whodunit and it's still a thriller. The villain, Claude Bledsoe, has to come up with a million dollars in order to inherit his grandmother's money. Since it's too hard to fix horse races the old fashioned way, using his superhuman strength and knowledge of nearly every skill acquirable through literally dozens of undergraduate and master's degree programs, the maniacal Bledsoe starts intimidating, blackmailing and murdering jockeys to throw races. McEvoy limns the life of jockeys and their families, whom he so clearly respects. The percipient protagonist Matt O'Connor (don't we all wish we had a boyfriend like that), a journalist following his hunches, finally catches up with Bledsoe - or the other way around. Think Grace Kelly in Rear Window. For fans of Chicago and Madison, these places are rendered lovingly. Fast paced and funny, Riders Down is satisfying in every way.
Fast Track Tale.......2006-04-19
John McEvoy's Riders Down is like two books within a single cover---the first full of insights into the world of horse racing which then becomes the backdrop for the second, a fast paced detective drama. McEvoy tells a good story with style, drawing on a closet full of colorful characters reminiscent of a Damon Runyon novel. And by the time the last page is turned, the reader can not help but be infected not only by the author's passion for `the sport of kings' but by his abiding love for the racetrack community that brings it to life.

I have worked at race tracks and the writer makes this world within our world come alive--we learn stuff. The characters, from Glockner the bookmaker to Maggie the trainer, are strong. You're easily drawn into them and their lives. The plot is suspenseful and the ending delivers. If you love Chicago, the world of horseracing or just a strong mystery, you'll go for this book. Hope McEvoy's got another one up his sleave.
Riders down scores big........2006-03-08
Here's a fast-paced look at the dark side of racing, written by someone who obviously knows the track inside and out. Peopled with unforgettable characters, the intricate plot moves smoothly towards a truly smashing finish. A wonderful read for mystery fans and/or racing enthusiasts.

mythology, not fantasy.......2004-11-20
This book, like its sequel "Revenge of the Valkyrie", is not your standard fantasy fare. It is a highly readable re-telling of old an Norse myth. It is not written like fantasy fiction in that it is not about written from a point of view within the story, it just tells the story in simple prose (i.e. there really isn't any character development, there is no access to internal workings of the protagonist, etc). It is quite similar to Tolkien's Silmarillion in this way, though it is easier reading than "The Silmarillion". In fact, when you have read this book, you will quickly understand why people have always said that Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" was based largely on Norse mythology.
Part 1 of the "Song of the Dwarves" begins with a skimpy but interesting explanation of the genesis of the gods (Odhinn and his crew) and establishes the background for the story that follows. Part 2 moves into the story about the Rhinegold and the making of the Ring of Power. This story is followed up in the equally entertaining sequel "Revenge of the Valkyrie". I suspect that this is the story of Wagner's famous opera of the Ring (but finding Opera to kind of painful and incomprehensible, I cannot say for sure that this is the case).
I enjoyed reading both of these books and would read others in the same vein, but I understand that as these are just fleshed out prose versions of an old myth, and are not fantasy fiction in the true sense, these books are not for everyone.

The story starts off at the begining of time, and the creation of the Nordic gods. It then goes on to their habitation of Earth and also the creation of the Ash Tree that connects all the worlds. The story tells of the greed of the gods, and their downfall.

I bought a copy of this when it was a new book (1987). Make no mistake about it, this is an 80's makeup style book. The approaches to eye makeup look rather garish today (though some would still apply to nightclubbing). Some of the advice about skin care is woefully out of date. Worth looking at if you're interested in determining what colors you look best in (clothing and makeup). The advice about makeup brushes is helpful to the novice. Take the rest with a grain of salt.
Right On - Seasonal Color Does the Trick.......2007-05-09
I had a seasonal color analysis done in 1979, when Carole Jackson came out with her first book, "Color Me Beautiful". I have found that this system works best of all to find the colors that flatter me most (I am between Winter and Summer, a "cool" person). This book helped me to select my best colors in makeup and also explains why.
I recommend it highly for anyone just trying to get together the best colors!

If you know your season and your best colors (from any other Color Me beautiful book) then forget this one. You're much better off buying Bobbi Brown's or Aucoin's book, both of which will offer you much better make-up tips and ideas.
The book is badly presented with boring pictures and graphics and an uninspiring layout that does nothing to attract your eye. When you go through Brown's or Aucoin's books, you find yourself itching to put some make on, with this one, you'll close the book and wonder what's on TV.

Over the years, this book has been my best help to age gracefully and to feel my best. I am now 57 years old, and I feel fresh and alive, with both an inner glow and an outer one. Having learned through the Color system how to find clothes that flattered my natural coloring, I can easily highlight with make-up. Whether we are going fly-fishing or getting dressed for a fancy party, I need only a small kit to make me feel my best.

A little dissapointed..........2005-08-31
I ordered this book because I was throwing a big party and thought I could get a little advice. I was dissapointed because I felt the book really tailored to a specific audience that wasn't exactly my style. Some of the projects were really neat, but I didn't have time to make them, and I wouldn't really know what to do with them after I'd made them and they weren't specifically my style (like the Tiki Bar). There was some good side notes though on technical aspects of good party throwing like "What makes a good hostess?" etc. that I found interesting and useful, but on a whole, I would have rather bought another book.
Disapointing.......2004-02-01
I loved Pad, I mean LOVED Pad - the crazy interiors, the cool design projects you could do yourself, and on the most basic level the ideas and inspiration on every page. So naturally I was thrilled to find a sequel - but sadly this follow up is pretty disapointing.
For starters it's more cookbook than an interior design book, and although there is inspiration to be found many of the projects are not things you are likely to try and do yourself. I very much miss the aspect of seeing into other people's homes (that was such a wonderful feature of Pad). But most of all I was quite annoyed about a Fish lamp project which is this cruel construction that involves a glass bowl, a candle and some live gold fish as a hanging lamp. Potentially boiled gold fish trapped in a tiny swimming space seems to me as very unpleasant and cruel, it's quite disturbing to think someone might make this.
Should you buy it? It's up to you but you could do better than Pad Parties.

Seriously, since I got this book, I've had to wrangle it out of people's hands. Anyone who visits takes an instant fancy to it. But the truth is, it's best to keep this little guidebook all to yourself. No need to give away your party secrets!
I looked for this book after reading PAD, and it's the perfect follow-up. This volume includes plenty of unexpected additions -- the recipes rock, and you won't find them anywhere else. The craft ideas are on par with Maranian's most inspiring from PAD, and as before, the pictures are mesmerizing and the writing can't be beat. And after all, god, who wouldn't want a light-up punch bowl? (Aside from that, I was pretty amazed at what can be done with a candle & a couple of goldfish. It's actually much less torturous than it sounds: you'd just have to see the Goldfish Globule Candlelight Lantern to know what it's all about.)
PAD guides its reader through decoration; PAD Parties shows the reader what to do once the place is decorated. It's different from PAD in that it assumes you've already established your residence, so the book begins immediately with party preparations. It's a comprehensive guide, instructing its reader on everything from food to gift ideas to tending bar to manners (and these are still much more important than one might think!). PAD Parties is an inspirational guide for the experienced host and the novice alike -- there's something here for everyone.
If you liked the charm and sophistication of PAD, it's all here. This is the grown-up edition of PAD part one. Use these ideas, and your party can't go wrong. Your life is just waiting to begin!
Fun & useful, but not as compelling as PAD.......2003-07-25
This well-designed guide to the PAD retro/sleazo, classy/trashy entertaining aesthetic is loaded with tips, recipes, projects, lovely photos, and Maranian's distinctive wit, but it lacks the component of voyeurism that made the first PAD so special. My favorite sections in the first book, the pages I keep going back to, are the PAD Profiles of fabulously creative people in their weird and wonderful homes. Regardless of whether I truly dug their style or not, it was an inspiring kick to read (and see) about their lives and how they achieved their decorating effects, and it was another kick to later recognize their names mentioned in the context of their beyond-PAD professions. It would have been great to see photos of PAD Parties in progress, and to have PAD hosts give descriptions of parties they've thrown. Of course, it may have been difficult to achieve such photos without having them appear to be staged for the purpose of the book--but at least it would have allowed us more glimpses into super-cool homes and lives.

an ultimately groovy book about really cool ways to spruce up a party or an entire place. The design of the book is cool with great layouts and stylish colors. While the price is a bit steep, this makes for a great gift or coffee table accessory.

This book consists of two parts. The first part gives general information about the history and development of the fountain part, plus its side-effects (FP advertising, FP's in arts, influence of FP's on regular life). The second part gives information on 100 pens from the last 100 years. Apart from the excellent photographs, it is very interesting that a lot of Italian/European pens are covered. There are a few inconsistencies in the text, but overall a lot of useful info is given about the covered pens.
It is not a reference book, because of the choices and number of pens covered. However, it is a very beautiful and entertaining book that is very well worth reading. You could even spend an evening just dreaming away with the pictures ...
Broad in scope with great depth and excellent photography........1999-11-07
This book comes has two distinct sections . The first deals with the pen , its history and design(Natch!). It starts with a history of pen technologies used down the ages and takes a look at the pen's role in art and design, and also at the inventors along the way who have brought us the modern fountain pen.
The second part is a selection of pens produced over the last one hundred years and all the major manufacturers as well as some of the long forgotten ones; Nettuno, Ercolessi and Pygmalion to name a few. The interesting thing here is that the pens mentioned are ones off the beaten track and the same old list of names is not replicated here, making this book quite unique. The selection is in chronological order and even a quick read gives a moving picture of pen design over the last century.
The images used in the book are first rate and are interspersed amongst the text , avoiding the boring visuals normally associated with such books.The graphics are also excellent and add to the quality of the book.
Quality is a by-word here , not only are the design and technological aspects of the pen discussed , there is also a wealth of information on pen production dates , company information and marketing and advertising by the different companies.
A technique used in the book to interrupt the narrative , mid-stream by using a different page design to focus on a particular topic discussed in the main narrative can become quite irritating and the book would have been better served by putting these pages at the end of each chapter.
This is a small gripe with what is essentially an excellent book. Eminently enjoyable , unique and with coffee-table quality , this is a must have for any pen collector.

This is a great book. A great thought. I tried few projects from this book and all of them came out very well. No way to make mistakes or goof up. If you finish a project, it has to be perfect. And everybody is amazed seeing at the end product and you get the credit for it.

A good book in many ways........2007-09-26
Tolpin has put together a grand book on the table saw. A little bit of tricks, some jigs, when it's good and possible to use it and things to build for safety. Some things he wrote about I would not use. I believe that it's safe to use, but... I don't think I'll be cutting any circles with my saw, but if anyone asked me if you can, I'll say "Yes", you can do it safely. I'll keep this publication close to my saw for the future.

Several good reviews on this book, all are correct IMO. This book is very thorough.... I thought I knew a LOT about TS's, but this book taught me even more. Some very useful jigs, safe work methods (very critical when cutting small strips), great set up instructions, and, great charts on type of blades to use. If you use a TS, there is something extra you will learn if you buy this book...
Ok but not very detailed.......2006-05-26
This book is a more a of brief review of table saw technique and jigs. The chapters are not very detailed and don't actually contain any directions for doing most of cuts or processes. The most frustrating thing is where he will say "just use this very handy jig" and then gives a very crude drawing of the jig with no explanation of how to build it or even a basic layout. A MUCH better book is Kelly Mehler's The Table Saw Book.

I wish Tolpin would have presented an overview of his fence jig system early on, it would have been easier to grasp the concept BUT unlike one other reviewer I certainly did not have to go through the book several times to get it.
Besides the jigs, I appreciated the discussion of blades (design, choice, and care), ripping, and setup. Having read the section on setting up my saw, I went out to the shop, tuned things up and it has made a big difference in my work - everything fits together better!
Finally, the person who said that this book is of no use to the beginner with a beginner's saw: think again. My Bosch 4000 is pretty basic, but I was able to apply 98% of Tolpin's advice to my unit.
If he would just add an overview of his fence jig system I could give this 5 stars!

This is quite an interesting guide for those seeking for innovation in newspaper design. What makes it so interesting is the fact that it's assembled with pages and pages of newspaper desing around the world.

I bought this book because I wanted to see the world's best newspaper designs. What I got is more than expected. Now I know what makes best newspapers. It's a combination of a lot of things. There are lessons to be learnt although the book is not a manual. Newspaper designers, editors, photographers and art directors better work together hand in hand to produce the highest quality newspaper or else.... I found that european newspapers are superb in the combination of news, art and design. What more can you ask if they can blend them so well in a newspaper. The American newspapers fares equally well with a combination of news and photos. For the Asian and the Pacific,... they had better catch up.

What's the matter with newspapers these days? Not enough creativity, put simply. blah, blah, blah. this is THE book that will get those creative juices going from the very first glance. Gorgeous format photography (the eager and well-sighted can even read the articles) encompassing designs from around the globe, gloss paper and well written guidelines consolidate a book that is a pleasure to view and a pride to own. In previous years I have found it is not wise to lend - it takes ages to get the blessed book back!! A genuine and completely worthy investment, and absolutely recommended.

Ordered this book hoping to gain more insight into the talent that was Phil Lynott.But this really is just a list of club shows,concert dates, recordings done and other miscellaneous info. There's no understanding for the reader as to who Phil was as a man and an artist and what drove him to be both so brilliant and so self-destructive. Well-written and organized(the third star),but not what I had hoped to learn.

Well researched, and importantly it does not rely on "A friend of a friend" or "Insiders said" quotes. All quotes are attributed, but I wish the author would have infused the book with more quotes and statements by Phil from media interviews of the period. Perhaps, he did not want the subject clouded by his view of himself? A great introduction to Lynott, that would be rounded out by a reading of Philomena Lynott's 'My Boy' book. I thought the most insight on the great and moody side of Lynott was given by Jim Fitzpatrick (who did many of Lizzy's album covers), and on the whole every member of the Lizzy cast was contacted and quoted in the book. Huey Lewis in particular came of in a great light. Also a great resource for those interested in early Irish rock music, and the bands which formed and quickly faded but had a lasting impact as proving grounds for future success. A good read on a great artist.
Down From the Glen Came the Marching Men..........2005-07-01
Quite simply, this is the best rock biography I have ever read. Ever. It's as simple as that.
Thin Lizzy have been my favorite rock band since 1985 and it's with great objective criticism that I make the afformentioned statement.
I've an earlier printing of this and some of the photographs are different which is a shame. The one of Brian Downey and Phil around ten or eleven years of age in their little suites has got to be one of the most priceless things I've ever seen.
Anyone that says rock music serves only as backround clatter or is merely entertainment is an inspid, evil, fool. Rock and roll music can save your soul and the story of Thin Lizzy is one of the greatest testaments in that majestic canon.
Gone but not forgotten.......2004-10-05
I was too young to be a real Lizzy fan when they were in their prime, but have come to appreciate them, and Philo through all the reissues and compilations. This is a great read and serves as a tragic example of the highs & lows of success. It is basically a straight forward transcription of one-on-one interviews with all of the many band members and other key figures. We get an amazing insight in to the effort involved in trying to achieve, then maintain success and how the trappings of this success eroded the life of a hard working rocker from Dublin. Sad, but again an excellent read.
