Galactic farmers rebellion........2006-03-16

For most of the Star Wars universe fans, the most interesting things you can read about are the characters of the original trilogy. After Boba Fett, Darth Vader etc. now is Biggs, the friend of Luke who died at the Death Star.
In addition to that the art-work is really good, so if you like Star Wars universe you will enjoy it a lot.
Another good comic-book of an excelent series.

Loved the different perspective..........2006-02-07

I am an original Star Wars freak, grew up, then got hooked back into Star Wars (I'm 37). I have been gathering up comic/graphic novels wherever I can find them, and I must say, this is my favorite series (other than the Clone Wars series). I like the deeper dimension this book and the other Empire volumes bring to the Star Wars universe. The storyline is quite full, compared to the skimpy (almost silly) story lines from other comics (Marvel comes to mind). One can actually relate to the characters; I am a female so of course I like the emotional relationships between the characters and the character development. The artwork is very nice too, and one can almost imagine them being real (if that makes sense). This particular story tells how the rebellion gathers speed, appealing to people's sense of right and wrong and how they actually stand up and do something about it. Great story.

So much more than one Rebel's story..........2005-06-03

Biggs Darklighter isn't a very well known character. Rogue 3 in A New Hope, we know he was Luke's friend from Tatoonie that gave his life protecting Luke during the Battle of Yavin. This graphic novel, which collects Star Wars: Empire, issues #8-12 + #15, gives us Bigg's background, motives, and an in depth look at a fascinating man.

This graphic chronicles Biggs from the time he was a youth on Tatoonie, until the fateful Battle of Yavin, with many interesting notes in between.

Nor is this simply the tale of Biggs Darklighter. Luke Skywalker and "Hobbie" Klivian both have prominent roles.

There is also a small series called "The Short, Happy Life of Roons Sewell". Originally printed as Empire #10-11, it is composed of Roons Swell's eulogy, delivered by General Dodonna. Though this eulogy and a series of flashbacks, we see Roons Sewell's path to becoming a hero of the Alliance, a haunting, interesting tale.

Both these men had different lives, and took very different paths to becoming martyrs for the Alliance. Both men were brave and became icons of heroism.

The writing is flawless, the art is bold, and the story haunting. Highly recommended.

Star Wars - A New Hope prequel........2005-04-11

Or maybe it should be a prequel to Rogue Squadron. The story of what happened before and during A New Hope.

Blessings on Rue Morgue for their revival of Dorothy Bowers! This is another fine story, beautifully written, atmospheric and neatly puzzling. It's a great pity that Bowers died so young, but at least we have these few treats from her pen now available again.

Wonderfully entertaining and a brain twister.......2005-12-04

As heir apparent to Dorothy L. Sayers, Dorothy Bowers' short but critically acclaimed career ended with her death at age 46 from tuberculosis. She wrote four Dan Pardoe novels between 1938 and 1941 to excellent reviews, and her final novel was published in 1947. She lived long enough to see her election to the prestigious Detection Club in 1948 and died shortly thereafter.

Someone has made three attempts on Archy Mitfold's life, because Archy knows something he shouldn't. When Inspector Dan Pardoe and Sergeant Tommy Salt are called in to investigate whether someone finally succeeded in killing Archy or if he took his own life, they find that Archy has left clues. There are several drawings of spotted birds, some with a hatchet. And there is Archy's red diary, but that is inconveniently missing. It is up to Dan and Salt to reconstruct the week that led up to Archy's death to find out if his death is linked to a pro-Nazi Nordic Bond or if something more sinister is at work:

"'The rope, Tommy-keep your eye on the rope,' said Pardoe, with a sudden grim vision of a second one at the end of the story. 'That was a piece of smart improvisation-quick thinking, speedy action, but improvisation all the same. Else he'd have brought rope with him, and if rope, why not a simpler weapon? As I read it it means the murderer had to think up that method at the last to ensure Mitfold died, and it tells us too, that he's a man familiar with the run of the house in Mulberry Fountain.'"

Dorothy Bowers manages to lead the reader into not only a world of enigmatic clues left by a man-child who has stumbled on to a murderous scheme concocted by someone very close. Bowers sets her writing bar very high, and the reader is bombarded with eloquence from the first page. Suspense and peril aren't far behind, and this is a case that has tentacles that go everywhere and has Scotland Yard's finest scratching their heads in dismay. Bowers leads both the police and the reader on a merry chase and skillfully succeeds in one of the finest points of mystery writing...the red herring. She firmly points the reader in one direction while Dan Pardoe and Sergeant Salt are forcefully building the case in a very different direction. The result, Bowers' second Dan Pardoe mystery is wonderfully entertaining and is a brain twister.

The humor is very dark and dry. Just my cup of tea. (Cups of dark tea figure in the story.) But the book is more than that. Exquisite passages of prose and fully realized characters pull you in and keep you going until the end. In fact, I didn't want it to end. And I want a Lena, too!

Wonderful.......2006-06-27

Henry Catenacci's "A Deed Without a Name" is a wonderful novel set in New York City. The writing is lyrical and beautiful and captivates the reader immediately. I loved the story because I lived in NYC and can relate to the dark, hilarious life and the characters that make the city, the characters and personalities that Henry has developed so beautifully. He gives it all to his novel and I recommend it highly. It is a great book by a great artist.

A wonderful book by a promising writer. The characters are well defined, the dialogue is witty and rings true, the plot is imaginative pulling you from one page to the next. I sat down over the weekend and read it from cover to cover.

Dragon Stories.......2003-05-22

Here There Be Dragonnes is an omnibus editon of three novels: The Unlikely One, Pigs Don't Fly, and Master of Many Treasures. These three novels are prequels to Dragonne's Eg.

The Unlikely Ones tells of a quest by the girl Thing, the crow Corby, the toad Puddy, the kitten Moglet and the fish Pisky. They meet a hornless unicorn and a cursed knight on the road. All have been hexed by an evil witch and are seeking aid from the Dragon of Black Mountain.

Pigs Don't Fly is the story of Summer, who is orphaned at the age of seventeen. She leaves home with only a few coins, a ring said to be made from an unicorn's horn, and a sledge full of supplies. When she places the ring on her finger, it tingles, but she notices nothing else unusual until her dog starts talking to her. She soon acquires an entourage of a blind knight with amnesia, a winged pig, and other animals. Her journey then starts to become very strange.

Master of Many Treasures is the continuation of Summer's story. She is determined to find her dragon. She forges papers declaring her as an apprentice of Master Spicer sent to Venice to learn the trade. She is pretending to be Master Summer, a boy, for girls aren't allow to become apprentices. Only her dog, Growch, knows who and what she really is, or so she believes.

These tales consists of one independent story and a duology. All three share a common ambiance; all are quest tales, all involve dragons, all concern young heroines who have a certain pragmatic approach to life, and all feature animals of various kinds. The first two also include disabled knights. All have the author's deft touch with characterization.

The heroines of these stories remind me of Kilisha, the young wizard's apprentice, in Watt-Evans' Ithanalin's Restoration. They don't just stand around and worry about the hugeness of the task; these younglings start working on each segment, one after another, until the job is completed.

Some reviewers have criticized one or more of these tales as being either too full of minute details or of being too empty of minute details. Obviously, neither party would be satisfied with the other's recommendations, but the author's more moderate course does not seems to please either party. As for me, I thoroughly enjoyed the author's choices in this matter.

A related criticism has to do with the swiftness of the narrative and thus is related to the previous criticism. The author initally lays a solid foundation for character development and then speeds up the action, but never to a breakneck pace. Once again, I concur with the author. If you don't like her choices, don't read her books. Please don't try to change her, for she can and does produce readable stories. Critics can rarely say the same.

Recommended to Brown fans and anyone else who enjoys spunky heroines who accept responsibilities and thrive on them.

Great exercises , very good for pregnancy and labor.......2007-07-14

I love the exercises in this book. It does help if you have done yoga before but even if not, they are easy to follow. My pelvis feels stronger after doing them. The breathing exercises are good too and I love the kegel visualisations. Sometimes I wish it had photos instead of drawings but the drawings are actually very nice. Spiral binding would really help though, I like to keep my book open next to my yog mat.

This is a great book for teachers. It has wonderful meditations, beautiful flow series and good medical info too. It is a well rounded book and a great addition to my prenatal library.

Covers prenatal yoga and provides lots of general info, too!.......2003-07-18

As a prenatal yoga instructor, I find this book to be very user-friendly, full of photos and illustrations, some original stuff that you won't find in every book on yoga for pregnancy. It contains not only programs suitable for the three trimesters, but also yogic breathing practices, simple ways to incorporate kegels, pelvic floor visualizations, a guided relaxation, very basic info on the chakras, nutritional information, tips for relieving backache and performing daily activities with optimal alignment. The Teasdill book is very pleasing to the eye, enjoyable and easy to read. I just love the "Salute to the earth - growing into gravity" series of poses. This series alone contains some positions useful during labor and delivery as well as in preparation for the big day. There is also a page of positions specifically useful for labor. There are other visualizations and meditation techniques suggested for use leading up to and during the birthing process, general info on the stages of labor and reminders of what may serve you during each stage. There is also a chapter on life after birth which includes yoga postures for recovery as well as general info on breastfeeding, nutrition, what to expect emotionally. This book does include a bit of yoga philosophy. The last lines of the book state, "Yoga is not just a system of stretching and meditation: yoga is awareness, yoga is living in the present, yoga is union, synthesis and integrity. Yoga is life." Preparing for birth requires more than just physical preparation. A lot of birthing is mental, being able to stay present for each contraction and rest between rather than creating more tension and pain in the body in anticipation of what may come, "complaining mind." The mindfulness and awareness of body and mind that come from the meditative aspects of performing the poses or sitting in meditation are valuable beyond the physical preparation. If natural birth interests you, you might want to check out Ina May Gaskin's Guide to Natural Childbirth. Another good book on prenatal yoga is Janet Balaskas' Preparing for Birth with Yoga. Wendy Teasdill's book has a more informal, conversational feel to it than the Balaskas book, if that is of interest. Makes is very easy and fun to read!

Well-organized, useful text ... a must for pregnant practice.......2003-02-27

Even as a yoga instructor, I found myself at a loss when trying to structure pregnancy practices. I picked up this book and found that it is very well put-together. It describes poses well and tells you when it is appropriate to do them, trimester-wise.

The book does allude to some yogic philosophy (NOT religion; yoga is a science, not a religion), but for a serious practitioner of yoga this is actually good -- so many yoga books and videos don't even bother to acknowledge yoga's long-standing history!

Terrific book. Very easy to follow and logically organized by trimester. Sound advice and good for everyone from the beginner to the very experienced. Gets a bit into the "religion" of yoga, however is still a great resource for the every day pregnant woman looking for a good ~ safe workout. I highly recommend this book!

The Hachette Guide is the best, most comprehensive book of wine reviews I have yet encountered. It covers every region of France and incorporates review notes from a huge panel of tasters who submit their notes and ratings to the compiler of this book. It has been translated from French and this is only the second version of this annual to be available in English. The translation is first-rate.
The book is full of true wine discoveries so for someone planning to travel to one of the French wine districts this is an ideal planning resource.
For each wine reviewed (I suspect only the highest ranked wines are included in this book - there are thousands listed, BTW) there are review comments, rating stars for the truly outstanding wines, details on the vinification processes used and address, telephone and fax numbers, visiting hours, e-mail address details, etc.
Every wine lover should have a copy of the Hachette.

Simple and Delicious Recipes.......2005-12-07

I happened upon this cookbook years ago and have loved it ever since. I use it mainly for the maincourse beef and chicken recipes. They remind me of the dishes a French au pair prepared and that amazed us with how a very young woman could cook so well. The recipes are one to the page with a lovely picture of the finished dish. The ingredients and instructions are laid out clearly and are easy to follow. It is my favorite cookbook.

This book, like the Standard Catalog of World coins (1901-present) also by Krause et al, contains all you need to identify and price nearly every coin from every nation minted since 1901. The book begins with an identification guide containing images of common themes on each nation's coins (for example, the eagle on Egypt's coins), a chart/list of the various number systems (so you can read the denominations and dates on Arabic, Chinese/Japanese/Korean, Hebrew, and Thai coins, just to name a few), and a Hejira-Christian date chart (important for dating Arabic coins).

The main section of the book is organized first by country, then by era/dynasty, next by denomination (lowest to highest), and last by style (with KM number). Within each style are a list of dates, mintages, and prices at various conditions.

The main differences between this book and Standard Catalog of World Coins appear to be: (1) this book is half the thickness and half the weight, (2) this book is printed on higher-quality paper, and (3) this book doesn't contain as many coins that never went into circulation (commemoratives, etc.). So one might say that this book is aimed toward the collector, while the Standard Catalog is geared more toward the dealer.

Chester Krause, et.al.'s Collecting World Coins widens the focus to world coins from 1901 to the present, appearing in its updated 9th edition to cover 330 coin-issuing countries and states. Over 20,000 coins are listed by date and valued in up to four grade levels. The black and white coin photos here are even more extensive and essential for identification.

Adequate-resolution black-and-white photographs of the vast majority (if not all) of the 20th century world circulation business-strike coinage.

Especially historically accurate. For example Germany is divided into the coinage of various coin-minting units of government over its tumultuous and shattered 20th-century history: Anhalt-Dessau, Baden, Bavaria, Bremen, Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Hamburg, Hesse-Darmstadt, Lippe-Detmold, Lubeck, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Oldenburg, Prussia, Reuss-Obergreiz, Saxe-Altenburg, Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Saxe-Meiningen, Saxe-Weimar-Eisenbach, Saxony, Schaumburg-Lippe, Waldeck-Pyrmont, Wurttemberg, German Empire (1871-1918), Weimar Republic (1919-1933), Third Reich (1933-1945), Federal Republic of Germany (West & unified) (1945-present), Saarland (1945-1957), and German Democratic Republic (East)(1945-1990). I consider that nation-state categorization alone impressive and intimate knowledge of coinage production in Germany, let alone the over-300 coin types documented among all of those coin-producing governments. Similar detail is taken with a multitude of other countries worldwide, with whose history I am less familiar.

Number of coins produced each year are given as are prices for typically 3 grades: very fine, extremely fine, and uncirculated.

The only way that Kraus could "improve" this book is to release a 19th century edition, an 18th century edition, a 17th century edition, and so forth, because it is disappointing to have the history truncated at 1901. Although I am not aware of such per-century editions slicing horizontally across the world, Krause has produced vertical slices by country, such as the history of German coins spanning multiple centuries, which of course overlaps in the 20th century with this book.

A reviewer expressed disappointment in this book's lack of new content, and commented that the author had discussed something about creating an "altar." The altar reference did actually belong to another book (see page 79) called Creating a Charmed Life by Victoria Moran. The Emotional House is a very different book in idea and style. Hope this helped clarify.

Worthwhile.......2006-07-28

This is a special book. It is a wonderful guide to the emotional quality we create in our homes. It is practical yet transforming. Highly recommended!

A LIGHT BULB MOMENT BOOK.......2005-09-18

The Emotional House is no ordinary design book. Doing the exercises inside will set off a series of light bulb moments for anyone who tries them. This book offers amazing action plans and goal-setting exercises that go way beyond designing. There are plenty of good design techniques too (I really enjoyed the colour therapy and personal style exercises) but it was learning about the emotional functions of rooms that was the real eye-opener. I finally understood some of the issues in my home and fixed them.

Some other reviewer mentioned something or other about altars instead of focal points(?). I don't remember anything like that and I read this book cover to cover. Focal points were discussed throughout as a way to anchor the emotional function of the room (according to Amazon's Search Inside This Book option, focal points appear on 15 different pages). Perhaps that reviewer mixed this book up with another? From my perspective, The Emotional House is well worth the read.

I'd sum it up as: the road to a great life starts in the home, so fix your place up!

The Emperor's New Age Clothes.......2005-08-24

Based on the other reviews, I was eager to read this book. What a disappointment! The decorating advice is the same as every other book: declutter, have comfortable chairs with reading lights, hang some art, put kitchen things where you use them, design your home for you, not based on decorating magazines. What differentiates this book is that the standard material is wrapped in New Age 'spiritual' veils and tassles, so a room now has an "altar" instead of a "focal point." This lingo might have some value in knocking people into thinking about what they truly want in a home, but if you already have a comfortable home, you won't learn anything new here.

I really enjoyed this book..........2005-08-19

After reading and looking through many different style books and interior design advice books, I found that I was confused about how to pull different ideas, doodads and furniture I already have together. Ms. Robyn has a gentle and clear writing style and a way of helping the reader to assess HOW enjoyable one's house is and WHY a room is, or isn't, working. A brief example... do you have a formal style but live casually? There is going to be a clash that will create tension. This book is structured aroound some very basic rules, that will help any style you choose to work well.

The American equivalent of owning this book is stocking up on 50's memorabilia and Americana. It's a great nostalgic look back at the colorful, underlying optimism of packaging designers of small town India.

Emile de Antonio (1919–1989) was the most important political filmmaker in the United States during the Cold War. Director of such controversial films as Point of Order (1963), In the Year of the Pig (1969), Millhouse: A White Comedy (1971), and Mr. Hoover and I (1989), de Antonio lived a remarkable life in dissent.
De Antonio was a womanizing raconteur, upper-class Marxist, Harvard classmate of John F. Kennedy, World War II bomber pilot, and failed English professor, who lived a colorful life even before he stumbled headfirst into the New York art world of the 1950s. "Everything I learned about painting, I learned from De," Andy Warhol said about his friend, who famously drank himself unconscious in Warhol’s film Drink. De Antonio also was important to the early careers of Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenburg, and John Cage. Then, in 1959, de Antonio took on the chance to distribute the Beat film, Pull My Daisy, and discovered filmmaking.
In the first book on de Antonio’s life and work, Randolph Lewis traces the turbulent development of the filmmaker’s career. Lewis follows de Antonio’s struggle to make films about Joseph McCarthy, Richard Nixon, and J. Edgar Hoover (under whose direction the FBI compiled a 10,000-page file on de Antonio) and to work with such political allies as Mark Lane, Martin Sheen, Bertrand Russell, Daniel Berrigan, and members of the Weather Underground, whose activities he documented in the film Underground. Blending biography with critical insights about art, literature, and film, Lewis offers de Antonio as a lens to focus on the complex terrain of post-World War II America.

Breakthrough book in media studies--loved reading it!.......2005-09-16

It's easy to forget the importance of alternative media figures like de Antonio, but he was Michael Moore before there was Michael Moore (and he did it with an intellectual seriousness that MM can't touch). I read this book in a college class and was blown away: the author writes beautifully (how many academics do that?), he really brings the 60s and 70s alive as we read about Nixon, Ho, Weatherman, the Berrigans, and he shows the importance of using media creatively/politically for cultural critique. If this isn't relevant in the age of Bush, when every media appearance is stage managed like a puppet show, I don't know what is. A must read for anyone interested in the noisy intersection of media and politics. Well done.

de Antonio Rules!.......2001-05-11

I had never even heard of de Antonio, but Randolph Lewis has now sparked my interest in his films, and in American documentary filmmaking more generally. A truly masterful work!
