Book Description
In the latest edition, Philip Walker not only tackles the electronic aspect of the design of a security system, but also examines the human factor in such systems. In his own words: 'Electronic aids are added to enable security officers to do their jobs better, but not to do their jobs for them'.
Today, with the escalation of crime and growing concerns for security, there has been a great increase in the number of electronic security systems. Unfortunately, despite improvements in reliability in terms of equipment manufacture, false alarms do still occur, and they waste a large amount of police time; approximately ninety out of one hundred alarms investigated by the police are false. In the light of this, the new edition of Electronic Security Systems couldn't come at a better time, as it deals extensively with methods of reducing false alarms, allowing the police to concentrate on real breeches of security, and thus ultimately to reduce crime.
The extensive and unusual combination of experience that Philip Walker has in the world of electronics, communications and as a security consulting engineer makes him eminently qualified to tackle such subjects.
At only £30, this hardback book is an essential addition to your security collection. It has 320 pages packed with advice and technical knowledge, 40 photographs and 25 line diagrams and a good index.
Comprehensive coverage of electronic security systems
Written by an experienced security professional
Fully updated to examine new equipment with extensive help on avoiding false alarms

Troubled waters...
Celebrated painter Troy Alleyn, aboard the Zodiac on a cruise of the English waterways, finds a colorful constellation of personalities on its passengers list. Plus one who missed the boat-found murdered in London. Her letters to her husband, Superintendent Roderick Alleyn, relate a string of incidents-capped by a grisly drowning-that convince him that one of the ship's company is a world-class art forger on the run. But can he unmask this master of disguise in time to save another life-possibly Troy's?

A good read!.......2001-08-09
While Ngaio Marsh was extremely adept at the traditional detective stories, often her best work occurred when she was able to step out of some of the traditional confines of the genre. There is no better example of this than in Clutch of Constables.
Action takes place during a cruise along an unnamed river in England. Chief Inspector Alleyn's (Marsh's hero for those new to her books) wife has center stage as she is at the center of events as murder(?) strikes within the confined space of the riverboat. Are her suspicions correct or just the result of over-wrought nerves? You be the judge. Here Ms. Marsh is freed from the "Introduction-Murder-Police Arrive-Suspects are questioned" narrative that sometimes haunts her work. Suspects are introduced, but we are unsure of what to suspect them of? The crime occurs far into the novel, and instead of the usual detective story of pursuing clues, we instead are left to examine the atmosphere on board the riverboat and the social interplay between a cast of characters all of which seem both innocent and slightly off-kilter at the same time. The seedier the character the less you suspect them, the more charming the character the more you suspet them. Some characters are so annoying you'd glady strangle them given half the chance.
Marsh successfully plays the psychological angle here as she expertly increases the tension with the result of at least one moment of genuine horror.
A good read.
Not the best, but still a good way to pass time.......2000-08-22
The format of this Marsh mystery differed a bit, in that it cut back and forth between Inspector Alleyn teaching a class and the case that he actually uses as an example, which incidentally, involves his wife Troy. Troy decides to take a breather after her London art show and sees that there is a last minute cancellation on a mini-cruise. She signs up for it, and realizes, shortly into the trip, that she may be on bored with a famous international criminal - one wanted for murder. But which one of her fellow passengers is "The Jampot"? Alleyn himself is in the States on business, so a good deal of the information is first learned through Troy's letters to him (an interesting change, since we usually see Alleyn's letters to Troy). But as he becomes more and more alarmed by her reports, he returns to try and catch the Jampot before yet another murder is committed.
clutching at straws.......1999-02-19
Barely mysterious mystery, with major info given away by the cover design of my edition. While early Marsh was, like Christie, orthodoxically racist, this is latter-day, post-civil-rights Marsh, and thus has a black hero/love interest who is a "well-spoken" handsome doctor, a total condescenion bearing little feeling of veracity, and thus retains the mindset of racism just applied in a more humanitarian direction. Embarrassing.--J.Ruch

A Great Read!.......2000-03-25
Witty as usual, Christopher Stasheff also manages to convey serious truths about the ability of mankind to control himself, as well as insights into the sources and cures of self-esteem issues. Rod Gallowglass must struggle against himself as well as his enemies in order to protect Gramarye and his family. The children are, as usual, captivating. An excellent book!
Book Description
Dr. George Weinberg has been a therapist for over twenty-five years. In that time, he has worked with a great range of men, and he has discovered that deep down, men actually want commitment, love, and permanence every bit as much as women do. Over the years, his patients -- even those who have had a string of failed relationships -- have expressed deep desires for permanent, monogamous mariages.
So why do they behave as if they don't?
And what can a woman who wants a relationship do to help her man commit?
While other therapists tend to be students of women, Dr. Weinberg is a student of men. From childhood, most men have been taught to be strong and silent, never to show weakness. They've been discouraged from talking about their feelings, so they never learned the skill. Now, most are on a quest for the ready-made perfect woman. They feel that, in relationships, things can't be worked out. When the slightest thing goes wrong, it seems easier to bolt than to talk.
In engaging prose filled with anecdotes we all can relate to, Dr.Weinberg unveils the psyche of men to show the real insecurities that lurk there. Other books like The Rules and Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus have played right into men's fears -- by accepting the old myth and telling women that their job is to "overcome" men's fear of commitment. As Dr.Weinberg explains, this is exactly the wrong thing to do. Men have a powerful radar that tells them to run away when any strategy is being used on them. He explains why games of any kind -- playing hard to get, making a man jealous -- will only push a man further from commitment. And he gives women four simple keys to understanding their man's real needs and helping them move toward relationships.
It is easy to scare a man, but it is also easy to capture his love without playing games. Why Men Won't Commit shows women how to enter places where her man has not allowed any other woman to go and, if it's right, to stay there in a loving, committed relationship.

Customer Reviews:
More helpful than most...........2007-02-22
I found the first half of the book very very helpful. Most relationship books aren't written by a man on a man's perspective on relationships for women (at least not in this way). I found it very interesting understanding how men view their relationships with women, though the men that Dr. Weinberg works with or uses as examples in his book seem to be confused about male identity and masculinity. I don't think the theories in this book apply to all men. I don't think men in general rely on gut instincts and are unable to articulate their emotions about why they can't commit (I know many that can).
I was disappointed because I bought this book based on the 5 star reviews. Unfortunately, I found the book a little too value based and not objective enough for me. I think every woman should find Dr. Weinberg's four theories about men's basic needs in a relationship very useful (I did), but the chapters after this made me put the book down. I hope there aren't any women that by into the chapter about sex (as soon as possible) and how it affects committment, intimacy or whatever (there are so many opinions about sex, which mostly depends on a person's values, morals, and religion and I found the chapter too biased and flawed.)
I appreciate the review from the man that wrote "don't buy into it ladies . . ." (re: the book in general). Read his review before you buy this book; I didn't.
so helpful.......2006-01-29
This book is well-written, in an easy to understand manner, and is so incredibly insightful and helpful I can hardly believe it. It identifies exact problems I have been having with my boyfriend but never knew what was actually wrong. It also has fabulous suggestions for help. This is a great book.
Don't Believe it Ladies! From a real man.......2005-08-09
Men don't commit for several reasons, little of which is stated by the good Doctor.
1. Yes, men are afraid to commit because there is much to lose and little to gain in this "feel good" society for a man to get married. Many women only commit to relationships today if THEY are the able to reap the benefits whether emotional, financial, security etc. from the relationship while for men it is a lifelong journey.
Fact: Many more women leave men and divorce them than men leave the woman for the very same reasons as stated above. Contrary to the Hollwood myth, most divorce is filed by the woman, near 70%.
2. It is this very self centered attitude that makes many men wonder "Does she really love me for me" and "Why would I make a commitment because if we divorce I lose everything". So, ladies the Doctor is right about some things but wrong in many others. If you really love your man, tell him and show him. Be honest with him, don't play games and if you don't love him for him, with all his faults.
Then you don't love him.
Makes Sense.......2004-06-04
This book makes sense. It tells you the 4 reasons a man will commit that women often aren't aware of. Also, it discusses how to argue, although the book, "The Seven Principles of Making Marriage Work: A Practical Guide from the Country's Foremost Relationship Expert" covers is best! However, this book is good at explaining why men don't/do commit, based off his research. Written for the woman's perspective. Much better than "The Rules"! Gave me confidence by realizing men also want commitment.
strong relationship guide.......2003-04-08
After a quarter of a century working closely with men, Dr. George Weinberg concludes that the male of the species desires permanent commitment and a forever love equal to that, which women want too. The difference is men believe that to admit they want a permanent partner is not considered part of the cultural image and thus too feminine so most males hide their inner feelings as an alpha menace to their masculinity. Dr. Weinberg believes culture forces this role to include women placing the man of their dreams in a situation by comparing his strengths and weaknesses to his rivals.
WHY MEN WON'T COMMIT: GETTING WHAT YOU BOTH WANT WITHOUT PLAYING GAMES provides a straight forward guide for frustrated women to enable their mate to find his feelings ("gut reactions") by altering her behavior. Before feminists scream "no Jane" chauvinism and machos play Tarzan, the key in Dr. Weinberg's help guide is to accept that the male is the "weaker sex" so that the stronger female must take charge by being the relationship caretaker reaching through the stereotype stud to his inner being. This is an easy to follow guide that wastes little if any space assisting frustrated women with solid advice.

THAI CHEF
Ginger, Lemon Grass, Thai Basil, Rice Wine..........2005-11-19
All cooking traditions have a distinct flavor, something that instantly places that dish within a geographical region. In the case of Southeast Asia, these regional flavors are as famous as they are delicious. Asian food has become increasingly popular in the US, although much of it in an "Americanized" version.
"Asian Flavors" looks at the special sauces and spices that make Southeast Asian cooking unique, and offers several regional dishes for each flavor. The chapters are "Ginger & Galangal," "Chili," "Fresh Lime & Lime Leaves," "Soy," "Rice Wine & Rice Vinegar," "Coconut," "Lemon Grass," "Fish Sauces," "Sesame," and "Asian Herbs & Leaves." All of the ingredients are fairly easy to acquire, and any decent supermarket should supply the majority of them. A specialist Asian deli might be required for a few of the more obscure spices such as Trassi or Szechuan Pepper, but 95% should be readily available.
The dishes are all fantastic, and different from other Asian cookbooks I own. "Salmon Marinated in Gingered Tea," "Crab and Vegetable Tempura with Teriyaki Dip," "Crisp-fried Squid Rings with Lime & Chili Sauce," "Spicy Barbecued Tuna" and "Seared Chili Scallops" are all dishes I have tried and loved. The book is heavy on seafood, as befits an Asian diet, but there are still vegetarian, beef, chicken, pork and duck dishes to satisfy everyone.
The preparation is fairly simple, and a beginning cook should be able to do everything. There is quite a bit of prep work, including several 4+ hour marination times, on some of the dishes, but many can be put together in 10-30 minutes. Only a few dishes call for a Food Processor, which I don't own.
I am looking forward to experimenting with and enjoying more dishes from "Asian Flavors." A great addition to my cookbook library.
A superb introduction to a wide sampling of Eastern ingredients and techniques.......2005-09-06
Asian Flavors: Unlock Culinary Secrets With Spices, Sauces, And Other Exotic Ingredients is cookbook filled with 120 delicious recipes from China, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Cambodia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Korea, and Indonesia. Each sumptuous dish makes use of distinctive culinary spices and ingredients to promote flavors rarely experienced in the West, and full-color photography illustrates the majority of the dishes in all their gustatory appeal. Simple instructions readily accessible to chefs of all experience levels make Asian Flavors a superb introduction to a wide sampling of Eastern ingredients and techniques.

best reference work for Chick collectors, the Overstreet of the genre.......2007-10-04
This *book* is much better than the internet sites that cover some of the same material. This is a work of devotion and love.
For those who collect Chick Tracts and ancillary Chick art works this reference is indispensable.
Cover price is rather dear, however the value is in the exhaustive reference material. I thought I was a Chick completist, but found many holes in my collection and a few items I had never heard of.
For those who like collecting the works of this raving crackpot Kurt Kuersteiner's "The Unofficial Guide to the Art of Jack T. Chick: Chick Tracts, Crusader Comics, And Battle Cry Newspapers" is the Overstreet Guide of the genre.
In a world in which vicious Catholic-bashing is given a yawn and a pass, and also viewed as no threat to decent American values, the preservation of Chick's hate is a necessary documentation of the two last forgivable public prejudices of our PC world (anti-Catholic bigotry is only as forgivable as anti-poor Scots-Irish Southern white bigotry, not even Muslims get as vicious a treatment. In mainstream sources).
I Like this Guy, and I Like this Book!.......2007-09-05
Kurt Kuersteiner did an excellent job of putting this book together and he does a great job of analyzing Jack Chick, even though he doesn't go into depth about whether or not Jack Chick is right or wrong in his theological wars, (as I have done in my own work of Chick). Kuersteiner aimed to look specifically at the artwork and the story telling that have come out of Chick's publications in order to discuss Jack Chick more as a cultural phenomenon, which Kuersteiner did with great success. Kurt also adds his own humor and sarcasm throughout the work which in most cases I found to be spot on.
A quick aesthetic note: The artwork in Kuersteiner's book is also quite professional. Kurt was able to reproduce Chick Publications and keep their original feeling, while at the same time meld it together with his own written text. I thought the layout was quite good as well. It was a top notch job.
I originally bought this book and interviewed Kurt when I was writing my own book refuting some of Jack Chick's wilder claims and slanders which he produced based on the false testimony the the religious fraudster Alberto Rivera. (My book is called Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness: The Truth about the Vatican and the Birth of Islam). Kurt Kuersteiner is one hell of a knowledgeable source of information about Jack Chick and his book is definitely the ultimate in depth resource spanning the entire career of Jack Chick and his Chick Publications. Keep it up Kurt! Haw! Haw! Haw!
So now these are considered collectibles!.......2007-08-22
I write down anything about Jack Chick with some trepedation because as a Christian I have never been quite sure how to take him. The most christian lady I ever knew described these booklets as "satanic", other Christians have described them as "a bit extreme at times", and still others have described them as "the right message, but brutal". No one has ever completely agreed with them, whether they are Christians or not. Non-Christians are usually amused or repulsed or even infuriated by them.
Yes, it is true - they show everything in black-and-white terms. Unbelievers are usually loud-mouthed brutes, guffawing, cursing, and snarling their way through life. Believers are angelic and innocent-faced. I suspect he is an ex-Catholic (I have known ex-Catholics as angry, or angrier at the Church as he is) since he seems to feel that every evil in the western world was committed by the Catholic Church, and that the King James Bible is the only valid translation apart from the original Hebrew, Aramaic and Koine Greek. he has a lot of opinions, some a little far-out, but some of them are brutally close to the Truth. But they are also very blunt, and sometimes bluntness is not a bad thing, especially in a world that is often too nuanced, too politically correct, and too concerned about giving offense.
I first read some of these books in college, decades ago, back when I didn't even know what it meant to even be a Christian. No, these books did not lead to my conversion, but they did present some topics I had never heard before, and they made me think about a few things which had never before crossed my mind.
Some of these books are a little crackpot, no doubt. They are a lot more about hellfire and brimstone than what most Christians are comfortable with, and yet in spite of the fingerpointing, I do not really see hatred in them. Hatred Chick projects is towards Satan, and towards various institutions that he feels have lost their way, or those which never had it in the first place. I don't think he hates individual people at all, but he doesn't hesitate to show that people living apart from God are sinners, and this comes accross in his drawings.
Part of me is really turned off by these books, yet another part of me enjoys them. You cannot dismiss or ignore them, and that may be their greatest strength. You cannot be unaffected by them.
And now you can collect them.
As a comic artist, one of the best.......2007-01-23
What little i knew as a kid about catholicism and the druids came from Chick comics. My only regret is that he never did one comic or tract about my church. I enjoy good camp and would consider it a badge of honor if he did. Haw haw haw!!!
Chick is one of the best comic artists out there. The color printing and line detail was better quality than most other comics, especially of that time. His work deserves an unoffical guide.
Aaaaiiiiieeeeeeee!!!
I hope this is tongue in cheek.......2006-10-09
Is it hate speech to call someone who teaches falsehood a liar? Should nothing be said about the false claims of Jack T Chick? He supposedly hasn't granted a public interview in approximately 30 years. Is he alive? Is he real? The level of anti-Catholicism is virtually unparalleled. And as a Catholic (by the way, Catholic is Christian, and to be less is to be less than the Body of Christ), I am offended that he makes false statements and hides behind comics. Despite this, I will pray for those behind these falsehoods. God bless.

Line drawings for craftsman or excellent for tattoo flash.......2004-01-09
This 64-page book contains black and white line-drawings of motifs and designs from Viking art and artifacts. Many are enlarged versions of designs found in Wilson and Klint-Jensen's Viking Art (Wilson, David M. and Ole Klindt-Jensen. Viking Art. 2nd ed. London: George Allen & Unwin. 1980.), plus motifs usually shown only in artifact photos elsewhere. The major weakness of this book is the lack of any text identifying or discussing the various images presented - it's purely a collection of designs, ranging in period from the earliest part of the Viking Age through the start of the more medieval Romanesque style art of the Scandinavian Middle Ages. Contains a lot of knotwork and "gripping beast" type motifs.
Book Description
Moving or redecorating? Use this handy furniture layout kit to design your rooms before you purchase or reposition a single item. Includes 215 furniture shapes, graph paper, and complete instructions.
Customer Reviews:
I use this over and over.......2006-11-02
I love this book and I have used it over and over for years. Who cares if it doesn't match blueprints? Simply measure your room and do the math. I don't have blueprints to try and match - I'm just a woman trying to redo rooms in a house. There are 215 punch out pieces of furniture and if they don't fit your EXACT sofa you can cut them down to size.
I am a perfectionist and need everything to be measured exact. I do not cut corners and I have used this book for at least 5 complete room makeovers. It has been invaluable and many furniture pieces were NOT purchased because I knew they wouldn't fit in the room - all thanks to this really inexpensive layout kit. $5? It's worth the investment many times over.
A good starter item, maybe..........2004-11-12
I wasn't as pleased with this item as I thought I would be. It was purchased to use for our homeschooled 16 year old. At the time of this purchase, we also purchased "Home Quick Planner", which was the real find for us. I purchased this with the intention of using it as a supplement to the "Home Quick Planner" after seeing it listed on Amazon as a "goes together" type of item. Unfortunately, the "Home Quick Planner" was scaled to 1/2"=1', and this item was scaled at 1/4"=1', so they really aren't good together.
I was also wondering why they have the subtitle "From Stencils and Notepaper to Flowers and Napkin Folding", since that was not in MY edition, and my edition looks just like the picture in the Amazon ad.
Also, the "Home Quick Planner" has detailed "window cling-type" stickers that you can take off and put back on easily, which is nicer than these cardstock punch-outs, which are very plain. I would suggest that you "look inside", on the Amazon listing, which I didn't do since I impulsively purchased it when Amazon listed it as a "goes together" item. After viewing the "look inside", you may decide that this is just what you want, and the price is very low. It may be nice for somebody who wants to invest a small amount of money to try their abilities at layouts. You may be very happy with it.
Room and Furniture Layout Kit.......2004-02-10
Unfortunately, the pieces in this book are not to the scale of our blueprints. They should be 1/4" = 1 ft. however they are 1/2" = 1 ft. It is not specified in the ordering information on this item.
good find, good advice.......2003-01-06
We found the book to be a good tool, but limited in its use. Many of the pieces we have didn't fit those provided, so we had to improvise (you punch our standard funriture pieces for placement on a grid of your room). Also, the paper isn't a standard graph paper, so it's limited (unless you want to copy it)... other than that it was a good tool...
Room and Furniture Layout Kit.......2000-11-10
The concept is good but it should be available in a 1/4"= 1' scale so it could be used with standard house plans.

Another source of inspiration.......2005-02-18
I picked this up, being a huge fan of Japanese design.
As a source of inspiration for graphic designers, this book does a terrific job. I currently have at least 10 pages flagged for follow-up, to use as a launching pad for my next concepts.
The book covers packaging, posters & ads, print, and web design, with each section offering up a visual smorgasboard (or revolving sushi-plate, if you will) of designs, including CDs, logos, ad campaigns, billboards, etc. As an added bonus, the CD offers a visual tour of Tokyo, interviews with prominent people in the Japanese advertising and design world, and samples of ads that have run on television.
All in all, this, as most Taschen books, is a brief, very general survey, with little if no copy, serving to inspire visually rather than educate intellectually. But the price is right, and the book is a great resource for visual designers everywhere.
great content for its price!!.......2004-11-16
I spontaneously bought this book (at the bookstore, not on amazon) because the cover and its weight/size caught my attention. After browsing through the entire design section, this huge book (which looks like a dictionary!) is 100% color (at 600 pages that's amazing..!) and considerably cheap compared to other books. The content chosen is visually appealling and very inspirational, I've flipped through this book a lot whenever I'm at a design block or just to get ideas. There is a lot of different content and a great way to look into the Japanese culture of design, its good for people curious about multicultural styles as well as making their own style a little more unique :)
Outstanding DVD included - but book itself is average.......2004-07-03
The included DVD is outstanding with interviews of japanese designers, and funny commercials. The design examples in the book are average. You can go to EPCOT in FL and see similar designs in the Japanese store.
Design at his best..........2004-06-28
I have to disagree with the previous comment, the one referring to "Japanese Art". Sure, it would attract artists, architects and industrial designers as well, because it's such a beautiful book...
However, this book is targeted to Graphic Designers since it's called Japanese Graphics Now. I've seen it in detail... it contains a lot of stuff, from letterhead logos, web design, product and packaging design, poster and advertising examples... everything a graphic (or even an industrial) designer wants in a HUGE ammount (this book is really big... hundreds of pages).
The most interesting feature about this book is that the Oriental people, specially the Japanese have such a different notions of visualization and space treatment, that the way they develop graphic projects usually offer very different results to the ones we expect... (A signage project for a hospital IN THE FLOOR ??????????? Come on guys !!...)
Of course everything is very aesthetic and artistic, but all I have to say is that this book is REALLY a mind opener for graphic designers everywhere in the world...
Thanks.
Art in Japan.......2004-06-17

If you are interested in art, you should read this book, because this show Japanese art. Whole book is color pictures and it includes DVD. You could watch Japanese artists' interview, commercial, and cities.
Also, people who are interested in Japan can enjoy this book(^_^)

Book Description
For 30 years people have been calling Bill Shirk "crazy."
It doesn't seem fair. Just because he has buried himself alive 10 times, hung 1,600 feet from a helicopter in a straitjacket by an ice skate, run with the bulls in Pamplona (while in a straitjacket), and jumped off numerous bridges and cliffs.
He's been on 15 national TV shows; garned eight escape world records (including fastest time to get out of a straitjacket; highest escape from a straitjacket; and fastest jail escape), and laid claim to the title, world's greatest escape artist.
Everyone is fascinated by magic, and the mystique of Houdini-like performances have an even greater allure. How did he do that? Why did he do it? Now, for the first time, Bill Shirk reveals how he has done some of his greatest escapes. Some he stole from the great Harry Houdini (his hero), others he created himself. Each one different, each more spectacular and heart-pounding than the last. In an easy-to-read format supplemented by photographs of the event, Shirk gives the background to each escape, then details the method he used to accomplish each feat.
Learn how Shirk stuck his head in a bag with a hot rattlesnake; was run over by a train; or hung by an ice skate from a helicopter as he wiggled out of a straitjacket. Read how he survived being buried alive for three days with a python and a timber rattlesnake, and how he escaped from a jail while chained and handcuffed. See what happened when 10 tons of wet cement fell on top of him. How about hanging from a burning rope over a shark-infested pool? There are more examples. Lots more.
Of course, just because Shirk tells you how to get out of a straitjacket in four seconds doesn't mean you'll be able to do it. Once you know how to put your head in a bag with a rattlesnake, you'd rightly be crazy to try it. Leave it to the experts. As Shirk says, "If I was really crazy, I'd be dead."

self important tripe.......2004-07-22
This what happen when a lay-person as opposed to an actual magician writes a book - don't waste your time. The entire book is about a self indulgent egotist.
The secret: there are no secrets here.......2004-02-14
I was disappointed in this book. Though 25 escapes are described, with various misadventures, etc., there are hardly any tips or tricks revealed. Good from a magician's code of honor viewpoint, but misleading. I was also disappointed in the photos-to-text ratio - nothing wrong with lots of photos, but most of these scream 'filler' to me. I think this is a perfectly ok book if you want to read what it's like to do Guinness Book-type stunts. If you're a Houdini fan, there's better out there.
