Book Description

Here is the revealing underground classic, a work  that stands beside the "Seth" books as a  delightful and invaluable guide to our inner  spirit and our outer world. Emmanuel speaks to us  through Pat Rodegast and shares his wisdom and  insights on all aspects of life. Beautifully written and  illustrated, Emmanuel's Book I  is to be treasured, enjoyed and passed on to a  friend. Emmanuel says: "The gifts I wish to  give you are my deepest love, the safety of truth,  the wisdom of the universe and the reality of God .  . . . The issue of whether there is a Greater  Reality or not, for me at least, has been settled. I  know that there is. So I will speak to you from  the knowing that I possess."

Ram Dass, in the  introduction, says: "Being with Emmanuel one  comes to appreciate the vast evolutionary context  in which our lives are being lived . . . And at  each moment we are at just the right place in the  journey. As Emmanuel points out, 'Who you are is a  necessary step to being who you will be.'"

5 out of 5 stars IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE.......2007-04-02

Someone I did not know handed me this book about 18 years ago and said, "Here I think you should read this." They were right. It changed my entire outlook on life and has been my only comfort in some very difficult times. For those who are ready to hear the truth, this is it.

5 out of 5 stars a truly expansive look at life.......2006-03-17

The gentleness and love in this book are palpable. I love looking at life through Emmanuel's eyes. He gently yet forcefully leads the reader to a sense of power and oneness.

I read this book when it first came out and recommended it to hundreds of people. Seth is a classic but Emmanuel makes it so much easier to understand the same concepts.

1 out of 5 stars Confused attitude about homosexuality.......2005-05-05

I hate to judge a book like this based on only one issue, but as a gay man, this is an important issue for me. In answer to the question "What role does homosexuality play in human relationship?", Emmanual gives the following answer (I'll use slashes instead of the poetic line breaks):

"A necessary one./It is a means of loving./It is a means of reaching for oneness./It is a means to camouflage fear./It is, in short, a path.

"It is difficult to accept unification/because you live in a world/that encourages the either-or illusion./But things are becoming more closely aligned./Many people are learning to accept/their androgynous natures./Some express it in homosexuality,/which is an overstatement, however,/because of the need to accept/the sexual structure of the physical world./Nevertheless, in the long run/it is a healthy statement in your civilization./Ultimately we are all androgynous."

Despite the apparently encouraging beginning ("It is necessary"), this passage is troubling for several reasons. Homosexuality is defined as "a means to camouflage fear," whereas heterosexual relationships are not defined thus. Next, Emmanuel seems to identify homosexuality with androgeny, which are obviously two different things. A man can be extremely masculine and gay, just as a man can be feminine in some ways and be straight.

Then Emmanuel says that homosexuality is an "overstatement," whatever that means, "because of the need to accept the sexual structure of the physical world." Emmanuel seems to be saying here that homosexuality is somehow less favorable because of an inherent heterosexual structure to the physical world.

I cannot believe that the God which Emmanuel describes throughout the book would really care or choose to distinguish between the genders of two souls who reach out to each other. Perhaps Emmanuel's views on this subject are colored by Pat Rodegast's own confused and ambivalent attitudes toward homosexuality.

Thanks but no thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Emmanuel, My Friend........2004-10-31

I bought this book 15 years ago and I have purchased several since for friends and family in circumstances when I thought they might benefit from Emmanuel's sage advice. I don't know for sure if Emmanuel is a real spirit channeling through Pat Rodegast but I do know that everything he (or she) has to say has struck the chord of Truth within me and has given me comfort and strength whenever my faith in something greater than myself begins to waiver. Emmanuel is like a brilliant, wise and loving friend that is always there if you need them. This book is like taking a deep relaxing breath. There is nothing negative about it. That is why I still have this book after all these years and why I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A life-manual for loving souls.......2004-08-24

The 'method' of authorship of this book is sometimes referred to as 'channeling', although it must be noted the quality and variety of material claiming to be 'channeled' does vary enormously. The final 'proof' of anything can only be in its usefulness to the growth of the individual. I can only vouch that this book has served me like no other.

The word Emmanuel means 'God is with us', and if you are a soul who finds meaning and faith in the deeper reality of love, then you too may find your own divinity reflected back to you in this book.

This first Emmanuel's book is particularly striking to me in its comprehensive clarity, insight, and compassion for the human condition. The words speak directly to my humanity from the knowing light I once experienced in a 'Near Death like' experience. Emmanuel presents 'himself' as a 'spiritual entity', a being of light who has completed a whole round of incarnations on earth. He has an extraordinary depth of compassion and appreciation for the duality of human condition. One example: 'He' has a distinctly human appreciation of irony and humor, something other 'spiritual entities' may lack if they have not spent (valuable) time in the human realm.

Emmanuel's Books are presented in a question and answer format. There are few exercises as such, other than inspirations to question suffering, darkness, fear and guilt, and constant reminders of the eternal validity of love - of Self - of truth.

I have been deeply grateful for Emmanuel's wisdom in my life. Very highly recommended.

          Book Description

Fans of Elizabeth Peters will view Egypt through a different lens—but the real flavor of this 14-book series is Graham Greene or, given Pearce’s sense of irony, Eric Ambler....

The Mamur Zapt, head of Cairo’s CID in the heydey of (the indirect) British rule, focused on political, not police, matters. With the bustling new century, the loosening of imperial ties, and the rise of nationalism, his was a busy office. The attempted assassination of a veteran politician raises the spectre of a major terrorist statement at the capital’s principal religious festival where the faithful celebrate the Return of the Holy Carpet from Mecca.

Easily navigating multiple nationalities, three principal languages, and four competing legal systems, not to mention the intricacies of shadow and actual governments, Captain Owen, the Welsh incumbent, bolsters the Mamur Zapt’s office with the aid of a host of memorable characters.

In his 1988 debut, Michael Pearce, who grew up in the (then) Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, “memorably navigates the swirling cultural and political cross-currents of his chosen period and place, bringing to an historian’s confidence the creative intelligence of a born novelist.” —John Coleman, Sunday Times

5 out of 5 stars This is a sleeper series.......2007-07-31

Frankly, I do not understand why this series isn't more popular. Pearce writes compelling and delightful characters with a wealth of cultural detail as backdrop. All history and the social complexity of Cairo in pre-WWI is so well integrated that a reader can learn something without ever feeling lectured to or popped out of the tale. Pearce's stealthy wit delights and surprises much as Alexander McCall Smith's does. And,if you like Turkish coffee, you will never drink it again without being pulled back into Pearce's Cairo on a hot evening in a cafe!

3 out of 5 stars Fascinating, but a bit slow........2005-04-10

This was a bit slow-going for me, mainly as I am unfamiliar with the history of Egypt during this time. That said, I did find it fascinating to read about the social structure and customs. The characters were interesting and it was a pretty good mystery. I wouldn't put it on the same level as Barbara Cleverly, but I shall definitely read another.

5 out of 5 stars Egypt as You Never Imagined It.......2002-12-30

Michael Pearce's Mamur Zapt mysteries are funny, beautifully written sketches of life in Egypt in the early years of the 20th century. The books have all the panache and originality of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler. Why they haven't made it onto the big screen, or been turned into a Mystery! series on public television I can't imagine.

The central character is Gareth Owen, a young Welshman who is the Mamur Zapt -- the title given the (British) head of Cairo's secret police. The central theme is the tension between the British who governed Egypt at the time and the Egyptian people in whose name they governed.

"The Return of the Carpet" is the first in the series. Frequent appearances are made throughout the series by the Mamur Zapt's Egyptian counterpart in the office of the city prosecutor, by Owen's bosses, by members of Eqypt's dissolute royal family, by Owen's aristocratic and fiercely independent Egyptian paramour and by assorted members of Cairo's working class.

The stories are racy, wittily understated and steeped in the attitudes and rhythms of daily life in the Cairo of 100 years ago. Pearce's voice and his ear for dialogue are spot-on. The humor emerges naturally in his exploration of the complex relations between the English and native Eqyptians of all classes.

This is popular literature of the highest order. The books are, if possible, even more entertaining if you listen to the audio recordings produced, I believe, by Recorded Books.

4 out of 5 stars A tale of suspense and color in 1908 Egypt.......2002-09-21

The place is early-twentieth century Egypt, nominally part of the Ottoman Empire, in fact ruled by the British. Among the plots and nationalist tensions, young Captain Owen, formerly of the British Army in Egypt, is appointed the Mamur Zapt: a formerly Turkish post in charge of the political police.

A case of granades goes astray from an Army storage. The biggest fear--that the weapons will be used by terrorists for assasinations--seems accurate. Owen, inexperienced but intelligent, is hampered by many foreign and local fingers in the heady Egyptian pie in the investigation.

This pleasant tale of suspense, local color, politics, and adventure is told with touches of humor and restraint of the old English tradition.

5 out of 5 stars Essential New Information!.......2006-11-03

This new extended edition, edited by the estimable Verlyn Flieger, is a must-have for students and admirers of Tolkien. Of course, most of you will already have Smith of Wootton Major on your bookshelves, either in its own volume or in one of the several collections in which it has been reprinted -- so why get another copy?

Because Verlyn Flieger has included several additional (and essential) pieces to the Smith puzzle that have never been available before. These include: Flieger's introduction and afterword on Smith; Tolkien's Note to Clyde Kilby on the Genesis of Smith; his draft preface to a proposed new edition of George MacDonald's The Golden Key, from which kindling the story of Smith was struck -- though the preface was abandoned and the edition of The Golden Key never published; a long essay by Tolkien on the internals of Smith; a timetable and cast of characters with never-before-published details; and most interestingly, the entire draft of Smith, in both typescript and manuscript, reproduced in facsimile.

This is invaluable material for anybody interested in the development and meaning of Smith of Wootton Major. Prior to this edition, Verlyn Flieger quoted from some of these unpublished pieces in her 1997 volume A Question of Time: J.R.R. Tolkien's Road to Faërie, and even Tom Shippey (in The Road to Middle-earth) acknowledged the advantage she had in having seen this material. Now, it's available to all of us.

My one complaint about the book is that it is poorly produced (by HarperCollins, Tolkien's British publisher). The production quality -- and sadly, this is typical of British-made books of the past several decades -- is rather low. The spine is glued, rather than sewn, and it creaks and cracks, threatening to break any time the book is opened. The paper is like stiff newsprint and has a tendency to smudge. Terrible. But unfortunately, this volume has not been printed in the U.S., and the content is important enough to overcome the lackluster production quality.

              5 out of 5 stars A Revelation of Tolkien's Visions of Faery.......2005-11-07

J.R.R. Tolkien's short work, "Smith of Wooten Major," which he wrote late in life, has already appeared in several fine editions, both by itself and in combination with other pieces by Tolkien, and most of us Tolkien enthusiasts already have it on our shelves. So why another one now, and why should we buy it? There are several compelling things about this book that make it highly attractive to those seeking a deeper understanding of Tolkien as a writer and thinker, and I'll only mention four here. First, this extended edition includes an important never-before-published essay by Tolkien on the story and on Tolkien's views of the nature of Faery, of its importance to him, of faery tales, and of the role of allegory in stories of this kind. It is a fascinating piece that provides new insight into Tolkien's thought as an artist trying to capture glimpses of Faery in his writing. The essay is in some ways an echoing companion piece for his famous earlier essay "On Fairy Stories," in which, among other things, Tolkien outlines his theory of sub-creation that he executed so successfully in "The Lord of the Rings." Second, the book contains never-before-published early notes and draft manuscripts for Smith, several pages of which are reproduced in the book itself in their original hand-written form with helpful transcriptions on the opposite page. These papers not only show Tolkien actively creating and revising his story and the history of its characters, but they also show Tolkien's working methods as a writer and so demonstrate, in a microcosm, the methods he used on such a large scale for "The Lord of the Rings." Third, Flieger's editorial contributions are very helpful. She provides an afterword that discusses the critical treatement of Smith, its genesis as a story, and outlines the new material which, as she says, allow the reader to follow "the authorial progression from explanation to inspiration to formulation to painstaking revision." Flieger's notes are also very helpful, for she points us to relevant matters in Tolkien's other works and illuminates puzzling aspects of Smith. And fourth, this is perhaps the first edition of Smith that takes Tolkien's statements that it is not a children's story seriously. He called Smith "an old man's book, already weighted with the presage of bereavement." Previous editions of Smith have ignored this statement and dressed the tale up as a children's book, presumably based on the unquestioned assumption (which Tolkien questioned very sharply in "On Fairy Stories") that because this is a faery tale, and because it is short, it must be for children. This edition honors Tolkien's view not only of Smith but of the importance of Faery and faery stories in general by beautifully reproducing the tale and the lovely Pauline Baynes illustrations, which were made for the first edition, and by setting them within a handsome hardcover text that Tolkien readers will prize very highly. This is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Pass on the star.......2004-04-18

People who know anything about the mind of J.R.R. Tolkien know that he disliked allegory. That makes "Smith of Wootton Major" a bit of an oddity among his writings, but not an unwelcome one. It's a sweetly fantastical little fable that drips over with Tolkien's love of real, deep fairy tales.

It takes place in a little town "not very long ago for those with long memories, not very far away fro those with long legs." The Master Cook of that village takes a vacation, and returns with an apprentice in tow. But something odd happens at the Feast of the Cake -- the cook stirs in a "fay-star" with little trinkets in the cake, and it's accidently swallowed by a boy there.

The boy (later called Smith) is changed by the fay-star, which sparkles on his forehead. When he grows up Smith ventures into Faery itself, and even meets the Faery Queen herself. The message she gives him is for her mysterious, missing husband, the King -- who turns out to be the last person anybody in Wootton Major would have expected.

"Smith" is a fairy tale in the best sense. Don't expect cackling witches or convenient loopholes in spells here; Tolkien was too skilled for that. Instead we have majestic fey and sparkling magic, woven with a tidy medieval town. (Not to mention the custom of naming people after their jobs -- Smith, a smith, capisce?) Never once does it become precious or cutesy.

It's among Tolkien's simpler writings. In fact, it's so simple that it barely has a plot -- the vanishing King is the closest thing it has. But Tolkien's writing sparkles with little details of the fey, with only a minimum of description. His glimpses of Faerieland are too brief, but they're also reminiscent of a few passages from "Lord of the Rings."

A sweet, fantastical little story, this is one of Tolkien's lesser-known but still deserving stories. Charmingly symbolic.

              4 out of 5 stars J.R.R. Tolkien, a great author.......2003-07-21

I read this book, Smith if Wooten Major, quite a while ago, but i still remember a lot about it. It was a very good book, but some parts did not seem clear to me.
It is about a baker who puts a star in a cake. And when a child eats it that star appears on his forehead. Then they enter another world when they desire to. This tells sbout one person who gets the star and then who has to let it go so someone else can get it.
Right now it is the only J.R.R. Tolkien book i have read, but i am eager to read his book the Hobbit and the Lord of the Ring Trilogy and i will do so soon.

5 out of 5 stars Enchantment of the Truest Sort........2003-03-07

For a girl named Eowyn, it may sound sacreligious to claim that anything rates above The Lord Of The Rings in my mind, but Smith does. There is a purity, a simplicity in form, and a brilliantly honest charm in this tale that matches and surpasses any other of Tolkien's writings. Something of a classic, traditional, and yet also thoroughly original fairy, pardon faery tale shines through any of it's varied covers, making it the star of any shelf.

                  Product Description

Here are two short tales by the master of fantasy. In the first story the son of the village's smith is chosen to participate in the Feast of the Children, held once every 24 years. He swallows the silver star baked in the celebration's cake. The star takes him to the land of the Faery where he learns a valuable lesson. The second story concerns a poor farmer's son who chases away a Giant who has been destroying the farmer's crops. The boy, Giles, becomes the town hero. When a dragon is seen in the kingdom, the boy is sent off to once again show his bravery, with unexpected results.

5 out of 5 stars THE book to have for scoliosis patients.......2005-11-01

While it doesn't have as many case studies/pictures/stories as Scoliosis: Ascending the curve, I find the information to be a lot more in depth.
It was recommended to me by a fellow scoliosis surgery veteran before I had my op (Posterior only, T2 to L1 Fusion nearly 2 years ago at the age of 20), and the information it gave me helped me to really be informed and therefore less scared of what I was facing.
I personally don't really care for Stopping Scoliosis (just bringing it up as the two are offered as a package). It's too fluffy and not real in-depth. Though I guess that book may be better suited to kids/teens or those who are likely to get scared by TOO much information.

5 out of 5 stars The Scoliosis Sourcebook by Michael Neuwirth, M.D........2002-05-15

I have scoliosis and just recently had A/P spinal fusion at the age of 50. I searched everywhere and bought severals books before I chose a doctor and had the surgery. I found this book to be the best and most helpful. It is critical for patients to understand and expect what this surgery means.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Reference for Anyone Researching Scoliosis.......2001-07-23

Michael Neuwirth has done an excellent job of covering just about everything patients and their caretakers need to know about scoliosis and its treatment. Although there were a few times where I noted Dr. Neuwirth's treatment is different than the treatment received in this part of the country, in general, his wisdom and advise is right on. I'm grateful for such a thorough text to which I can refer.

This book has been created for patients who have decided to make education and research an integral part of the treatment process. Although it also gives information useful to doctors, caregivers and other health professionals, it tells patients where and how to look for information covering virtually all topics related to scoliosis (also Idiopathic scoliosis; Kyphoscoliosis; Paralytic scoliosis; Sciatic scoliosis), from the essentials to the most advanced areas of research. The title of this book includes the word official. This reflects the fact that the sourcebook draws from public, academic, government, and peer-reviewed research. Selected readings from various agencies are reproduced to give you some of the latest official information available to date on scoliosis. Given patients' increasing sophistication in using the Internet, abundant references to reliable Internet-based resources are provided throughout this sourcebook. Where possible, guidance is provided on how to obtain free-of-charge, primary research results as well as more detailed information via the Internet. E-book and electronic versions of this sourcebook are fully interactive with each of the Internet sites mentioned (clicking on a hyperlink automatically opens your browser to the site indicated). This book isn't for the run-of-the-mill scoliosis patient. There is a good scoliosis overview, but mostly it's information for people who want to do their own research. If books like The Scoliosis Sourcebook and Stopping Scoliosis aren't as technical as you like, and you want to read the original source material that makes up most of what the medical community knows about scoliosis, this book could be for you. There are hundreds of URLs, which could be an element that quickly makes the material obsolete.

Johann Loetz Witwe, the most productive art glass manufacturer in Bohemia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, owed its success to the sophisticated stained glass work it created in historic designs. With artistic claims reinforced by intensive contacts with the Viennese art scene, L tz built up an extensive and diversified product line, to international renown.

In the complex and confusing world of vintage art glass where attribution of unsigned examples is often difficult, the adage "a picture is worth a thousand words" applies. In that regard this volume delivers the goods. This book is filled with examples, the vast majority in color, of Loetz art glass. Many are listed with the name of the form designer, the artist or decorator, and whether or not the example is signed or unsigned. Included is a history of the company, exhibition chronology, and its relationship with artists such as those associated with the Wiener Werkstatte. There's a good section on factory marks and signatures, a section on artist biographies, and even a couple of graphically represented pages on "How to Make Iridescent Glass."

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly beautiful book!!!.......2005-01-21

I am thrilled to have this wonderfully illustrated book in my Library. It is beyond description, if one tries to portray this history of Loetz Glass in words alone. I found suspected Loetz vases here that I, happily, own, and the authors left nothing to be desired in this publication....for the Loetz owner ~ it is a must have, indeed! Thank you, Amazon, for selling it at half the price of one offered on EBAY! UPS brought a jewell today! Now, hopefully, more Loetz will be on the way!

3 out of 5 stars A Partial Review of Loetz Glass.......2004-05-02

I bought this book in the hopes of learning more about the glass that has become my collecting passion. At over $50, I expected this to be a very complete book that would cover the different decors and styles of glass made by Loetz. However, after a very brief description of the early decors such Papillon, I found the vast majority of this book to focus on the Phanomen decor, with very little information on other decors, especially the earlier ones. The reference pages in the back of the book were very helpful (giving the date, genre and colors for a particular shaped vase), but again, most of these were Phanomen and most of the glass I have seen that I know to be documented Loetz are not even mentioned.
In general, I am glad I bought this book - the pictures are gorgeous - but wish there was more information on other decors and vase forms created by Loetz.

5 out of 5 stars Tying It All Together.......2007-04-24

My life's been a merry salad of male activities, and until recently I had just about given up hope of properly documenting it, but then I discovered Emily Curry Hitchingham and even better, Hitchingham's books packed with scrapbooking tips for the newbie. I'd lived the complete life of a man--hard scrabble beginnings growing up as an American child, scared, isolated and desolee in rural France, then early pangs of adolescent passions, a deep interest in American sports such as bowling, basketball and college football, and then the typical career path of a US male, replete with wise mentors, obnoxious bosses, and toadying suckups. Now at the very top of my profession, and having found true love late in life with the novelist Dodie Bellamy, I found myself wondering, how to get all of this wonderment down? Curry Hitchingham offered the glimmerings of a solution with her book on PET PAGES, in which we found ourselves commemorating the loss of our two cats, Blanche and Stanley--one white, one black--through scrapbooking, the fastest growing hobby for women in the USA.

Men should do more scrapbooking too! Men, you don't want to be like me, having attained maturity, with all your works around you, but suddenly feeling hollow, ill at ease with a world closing in on one like an oldtime puptent from Scouting Days. My wife bought me a copy of "All Boys" Scrapbook Pages, and I blanketed an entire scrapbook with souvenirs of my bittersweet years in childhood France--postcards of Mt.Ste Michel and Chartres, candid photos of Marc Chagall in repose, and scouting badges from the American Boy Scouts in Exile. I did a page in rope since tying was my favorite sport. And yet by the end of the book "I" was only 12 or 13. I needed a book to show off my manhood, the Lawrentian way, the primal way, and "ALL MEN" is it. Are you afraid of seeming feminine with pretty colors and coded allusions to domestic bliss? Then this may not be the book from you. But if you're man enough to take Emily Curry Hitchingham on her own terms, the way that Spencer Tracy always stood up to Kate Hepburn even at her most loquacious and mannered, then this book may be the answer to your dreams.

I've written many books, but never one as important as the Kevin Killian Scrapbook of Being a Man. And she helped.

                  2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-10-30

Didn't give as much inspiration or even as much instruction as I was hoping. Layouts were messy and hopeful at best. I'm just a beginner, but I was bored and dis-enchanted with the entire book. I give it two stars because there are a lot of contributors to this book who put in a lot of man hours and had some okay layouts. I thought it was a waste of money and wouldn't buy it again.

This is an important book to read if you are studying for the NCIDQ. It is basically a good review of prior Interior Design studies. Well written and clear. A good lesson in how the NCIDQ quesitons are written.

This version of the review manual is thorough and updated from the first edition. It discusses sustainablility issues, fire protection and current code information with which interior design professionals should be familiar. Even if you are not taking the exam, this book tells you how to operate as a professional and how to protect yourself in the business world of interior design.

I think the book was helpful... it broke down the sections of design well and offered up just enough information about everything to be a good guide / refresher from the days I was in school.

Despite a couple of misstatements this book was invalueable to me in studying for the NCIDQ. Although the format of the exam has changed, the nature of the questions have not. The chapter questions force you to really think about what is being asked. I doubt I could have done well in first two sections of the exam without it.

                      5 out of 5 stars Ruscha / Writing / Painting.......2005-05-04

Bob Perelman was thumbing through my copy of Ed Ruscha's They Call Her Styrene (Phaidon, 2000) the other evening, which raises the question of intermedia from another angle. Ruscha, if you don't know his work, is a painter and photographer associated with the 1960s Los Angeles scene that proved to be an intersection between Pop, Funk and Conceptual art. His work takes different forms, but Styrene is representative of the works that have most attracted me: prints, drawings and watercolors involving anything from a single word to short phrases, often against backgrounds that are close to monochromatic but which may suggest a picturesque element. Styrene collects some 600 of these works into a single, affordable volume - I've seen individual paintings priced as high as $45,000. My question is this: fine as they are as visual works of art, are Ed Ruscha's text pieces also writing?

Ruscha himself has a cryptic, but intriguing comment right at the end of the book: "Sometimes found words are the most pure because they have nothing to do with you. I take things as I find them. A lot of these things come from the noise of everyday life." End of comment.

So far as I know, Ruscha has not undertaken to publish these works as writing, nor in the context of writing. As visual art, these works inhabit that territory that utilizes language for its own purposes. Its closest kin in that vein may be the signage of Jenny Holzer, the paintings of Lawrence Weiner, or the poster paintings of Barbara Krueger, but the more densely textual pseudo-philosophical musings of Joseph Kosuth and Art Language aren't entirely unrelated either. Ruscha's prints and paintings make use of color and the illusions of depth and texture in ways that Holzer's do not and his works often lack the overt political commentary one finds in her work and in that of Krueger's. At its most plain, a Ruscha work might consist of white sans serif letters centered against a black background:

                      A HEAVY

                      SHOWER

                      OF SCREWS

                      or

                      THICK BLOCKS

                      OF

                      MUSICAL FUDGE

                      or

                      WARM

                      AUDITORIUM

While Holzer has executed some pieces etched into benches, a form that has to recall the (literally) concrete poems of Scottish poet Ian Hamilton Finlay, Ruscha's droll texts strike me in many ways being better writing. If, that is, they are writing at all. The last text above, for example, makes great use of the recurrence of the a, r and m sounds (not to mention the echo of the w one hears in the two instances of the u), an attention to the smallest of details that might be more apt to associate with the poetry of Robert Grenier. Microwriting such as this can invoke every pleasure one expects from the best of poetry. The first two pieces above aren't bad either - both use the same strategy of invoking a single term that is "out of context" in its phrase (screws and musical), which functions to set the language around it into a kind of relief, classic demonstrations of what the Russian formalists called ostrananie, Brecht "the alienation effect," and which Pound characterized as "making it new."

In addition to reminding me at moments of Grenier, some of the more visually complex of Ruscha's pieces, where richly textured "3D" words float in idealized pastel skies, remind me of how Hannah Weiner used to describe her visual hallucinations, words that would appear on people's foreheads that to her seemed to be composed in "dog fur" or similar materials. Weiner used these messages to create her "clairvoyant" works, although that aspect of such found language is not carried through her writing - the closest she gets is to occasionally "erase" some lines of certain letters.

All of which makes Ed Ruscha's texts function as an intriguing test of the boundaries of writing - how can a lone word such as "fud," written in what looks like white ribbon on an intense red surface (onto which the letters cast shadows) function as a poem? It can / It can't / It can / It can't - like a Necker cube or other optical illusions, the text strobes in and out of the realm of literature (though it always remains within the realm of the visual). It may be that this flicker effect is precisely Ed Ruscha's contribution to writing.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Little Book.......2002-03-04

I gave this one to a friend who never heard of Ruscha before. He loved it. It's a little unpretentious experience through Ruscha's world. It's not that kind of 7-colour-printed-on-coated-expensive-paper, but works very well as good entertainment and a valid introduction to west coast fine artists. Worth its price.

4 out of 5 stars A must for all Ruscha fans/influencees.......2001-11-01

Funny, but it seems as though every time a new Ed Ruscha book gets released, it then becomes the standard "must-have" edition. In my opinion, this is an excellent book for the price, even if only for a single viewing. What I mean is this: it's more like an object than a book, due to its small area (but thick volume), and lack of publisher information distraction - the absolute first page blatently plunges you into the art immediately. It will take the average art fan a good two hours alone viewing each plate at a contemplative pace. I have had two art shows myself, and Ed's work is by far my closest influence, so I am heavily biased. This book lacks the token interview with the artist, and also his other forms of work (notably the parking lot photography series, which is a sheer delight in its own right), but for the sake of the design, perhaps the book as it is says all it has to say (no pun intended, if you're familiar with his works). Part of the fun, though, with viewing these kinds of Ed's works, is reading his titles and materials used, as they are equally insightful; yes, I miss that. But the average or novice art buff wouldn't even notice it missing. All things considered, this is a great little form of entertainment all contemporary art lovers should own.

                      4 out of 5 stars very nice.......2000-12-03

My adventures with They Called Her Styrene began on a subway ride in Boston earlier this month. I saw an older woman flipping through a book, each page containting a picture with a few words written on it. I started looking with her as as she flipped through it. She flipped through it for about 20 minutes, and then my stop was next. I was worried I would never know the title of this book, and, being too shy to ask, would leave the train and be unsatisfied. Luckily, just as the train stopped, she closed the book and I saw the title.

                      I bought it shortly afterwards.

I already described it- it's a book of pictures with words across them. I enjoy it very much. As you sit and thumb through all of the pages, each word or group of words, combined with the colors on the background, conjur all sorts of thought and feelings inside you.

For me, it serves very well to just sit and thumb through it, looking at all the pictures and letting my mind wander as the book prescribes.

                      Its wonderful.

                      Book Description

Andy Kaufman defied explanation. But between 1978 and 1979, acclaimed New Yorker short story writer Julie Hecht attempted to arrange an interview with him, hoping to discover how he came to do what he did. The one-hour interview turned into innumerable surreal meetings and phone conversations with her subject; but she couldn't always tell when his act was on.

Whether driving recklessly on icy roads, or drawing the author unaware into his schemes and dada-esque pranks on unsuspecting waiters and college students, Andy Kaufman never seemed to separate himself from his stage personality--or personalities. Was This Man a Genius? is the culmination of a series of bizarre, frequently hilarious meetings; In describing them Hecht, herself a master of wit and observation, illuminates the enigma of Andy Kaufman's work and life.

                      2 out of 5 stars What's really genius.......2007-05-10

is how anyone could manage to sell a book that is written so dryly and with so little flare about a man who was all about flare.

This book, while it's interesting to read about real Andy experiences, does not do the artist any service. It's text-book dull, though fortunately not nearly as long.

I believe this is a valuable book. It could have been executed SO much better by the author.

5 out of 5 stars Context is everything here.......2005-08-09

Look, those of us who have read "Do the Windows Open" and "The Unprofessionals" know that Julie Hecht is a fabulous talent whose wit and wisdom is both as ideosyncratic and as it is humane. Knowing her body of work helps a great deal here. What we get is vignettes of two very interesting people who bicker quite a bit--but have kinship--and a shared vision. In my opinion they both see the world as an absurd place--Andy Kaufman chose to make a big deal out of this--let everyone in on the secret. Hecht seems more inclined to let the readers come to her. Those readers who suggest that Kaufman did not like Hecht miss the point of the book--He got from her some one who wasn't in on the game--but had caring for him as a person.
Readers will enjoy the relationship, and the book for what it is--a passing of like visions in different personalities.

4 out of 5 stars Insight into Man who was Strange, Totally Unique Comic.......2003-09-02

Julie Hecht followed Kaufman around sporadically over a couple of years, trying to nail down some facts about his inspiration, his life, for Harper's.

Kaufman did appear to have some affinity for Hecht, in contrast to her report of another press interview she witnessed, hanging around for her own time with the performer.

This stripped-down book is almost the word-for-word transcripts of those furtive interviews. Sitting down with Hecht at diners, grabbing a taxi together, Andy let down his guard just enough times to offer up interesting facets of who he was. The interview Julie has with Kaufman's mother is creepily illuminating. Many revelations for the careful reader.

I found it engrossing. Perhaps best enjoyed by readers willing to set aside everything else they've read, concluded about the man.

4 out of 5 stars An inside look at Andy.......2002-10-27

I believe the savage reviews here are unjustified. Several state that the author was not an admirer of Andy's work. Not true! She mentions 3 or 4 times that she (and her husband)were devoted fans of his comedy. Nor does she attempt to portray herself as a witty "sidekick". Did these folks READ the book? As for the book, it recounts many experiences between the author and Andy which were very, very funny.

                      1 out of 5 stars Waste of A Book.......2002-08-31

I bought this book expecting some laughs and insight into Andy Kaufman. What I got was a self-serving book by a very annoying author who basically has nothing worthwhile to say. Andy Kaufman blew the author off for years, presumably because she was (1) annoying and (2) boring. Then, years later after he's dead, she writes a book basically setting herself up as some kind of witty side kick who gave Andy all these wonderful straight lines. No. Actually you bored Andy, were about as much fun as a wet disrag, and will bore anyone foolish enough to but this book. What a wasted opportunity. Hey Andy: you were right in not wasting too much time on the interview.

Just as Andy Kaufman subverted traditional forms of comedy, so Julie Hecht, with her distinctive brand of wry humor, successfully subverts the traditional form of the interview. During 1978 and 1979, Hecht negotiated and met with Kaufman, following him from an appearance at his old high school to his now-legendary Carnegie Hall performance. The author stood her ground in all kinds of ludicrous situations, waiting for the appearance of Kaufman's real self, as if that self were some kind of Godot. Her determination and writing talent enabled her to uncover the truth behind many of the stories Kaufman made up for the press, and behind his sometimes poignant artistic aspirations. This is a book of bizarre meetings and often hilarious conversations between a great comedian (who hated to be called that) and his perfect foil -- a writer of short stories who found the story of Andy Kaufman's life to be stranger than fiction. It will entertain and enlighten the many fans of both the performer and the author, and through its surprising dialogue and surreal encounters it will shed light on the evolution of postmodern popular culture.
