Book Description
Girls From Da Hood 2 is the story of Helena, Storm and Keyshawn, three very different young ladies living in Marcy projects who are linked together by one man. His name is Malek Shaw, and he's the best and the worst thing that's happened to each one of them.
Helena Smith's life was on track. She was an A+ student and just voted most likely to succeed in her high school class. She was just about to get out of the ghetto on an academic scholarship until the night of her boyfriend's eighteenth birthday. Now her father's in jail, her mother's abandoned her and she's carrying her boyfriend's brother's child.
All Storm Johnson wanted to do was have her baby and spend the rest of her life with her boyfriend, Malek. That is until she woke up one day to find the police knocking at her door. Now she's being charged with possession of drugs with the intent to distribute, and Malek is nowhere to be found.
Keyshawn Nixon is Malek's old flame. She used to be a prostitute, but now she's left the life and is looking for revenge on Malek, the man who turned her out.

The Path to self destruction........2007-04-01
Nikki, Kashamba and Joy are among the most popular authors of today and I expect to be highly entertained whenever I read any of their novels.
Well of course these ladies didn't disappoint...as always they write with an edgy realness that makes you feel like you either have to kick some as* or comfort someone. These authors have delivered three good stories that will surely prompt the reader to stay tuned for the next installment.
Each author has written in her own style what really happens when someone follows the road to self destruction.
I liked all three stories.
Africa - I just wanted to shake her and tell her to wake up and smell the coffee.
Harmony - Is a wanna be, who becomes a has been...I like that twist AND I like Nikko...
Unique - I felt sorry for her but...what goes around comes around.
A recommended read especially if you've read the first book (this is the better book) or if you're planning on reading the third installment.

Way better than the first!.......2006-06-05
Of course I started with the last story first because I had to see what has become of that hoodrat Unique. And of course Nikki Turner doesn't disappoint and the ending proves superb. I actually felt sorry for Unique's grimey behind but it just goes to show what goes around definitely comes back around. In "Chocolate girl", Kasamba Williams brings the facts. Finally a story about a believable character. One who's not popular in the looks department and experiences some real everyday issues. In "Wanna be", we read about a girl who just wants to fit in and be like her hommies. I was deceived by this story all the way until the end. What a surprise! The three authors of "Girls from the hood 2" really put it down on a serious note. Keeps you wanting more.
Jus Gets Better!!!.......2006-04-11
When I went and bought this book, I was expecting for it to be mind-blowing, intriguing, and better than the first... Needless to say I wasn't disappointed one bit.. I loved this book and felt it was worth every penny..
As for Unique, lets just say what goes around truly does come back around!!! Damn that story had me in tears...
I loved it and can't wait for Nikkki Turner's next Novel
GOOD!.......2006-01-20
Yeah this was good. Africa A.K.A. Chocolate was an ugly girl w low self esteem. She was always told she was ugly even by her own mother. Well, Africa gets kicked out the house. She meets a guy, but this is where she gets stupid. Harmony is a good rich girl, unitl she meets crack cocaine. Read along as she gets hooked and poor. Unique! This chick really gets what she deserves. I was happy they continued this story. This was betta than Girls From the Hood 1

A Real Sacred Irish Adventure.......2003-09-08
Faery Ollamh, Kisma K. Stepanich-Reidling leads her reading audience on a dance of the sacred spiral of Ireland. She allows Faery to direct the course of the pilgrimage and the adventure that awaits the travelers. The sites in the book are of significant historical and magical value, and they do indeed come alive in ways you would never have thought. You'll feel like you have completed the preparation materials for the months preceding the actual sacred pilgrimage, and that you too are on the pilgrimage under-going the rites of passage. Realizing that the author is sharing a pilgrimage adventure, similar to a real life sacred pilgrimage, it makes you want to go to her website and register ... http://www.faeryfaith.org/pilgrimage.html . I enjoyed the novel very much and am waiting for the next one in the series now.

Book Description
"Deeply felt, deftly rendered, stunningly informative and often enraging" (Publishers Weekly), Hooked appears as we are finally waking up to the inadequacies of our current drug-rehab policies. With court-mandated rehab being debated across the country, Shavelson's in-depth look at the struggles of five addicts as they travel through the treatment maze makes a powerful case for reform.
Highly readable and shaped by Shavelson's experience as a journalist and physician, Hooked takes us through the anguishing "intake" and controversial House meetings, inside counselors' and judges' offices where many treatment decisions are made, and to prison cells where, under current policies, many addicts end up. It explores the links between drug addiction, mental illness, and trauma, including child abuselinks often ignored by current rehab effortsand argues for an integrated approach that treats the roots of drug abuse, not just the behavior itself.
Hailed as "compelling" and "heartbreaking" (Time Out), Hooked offers a provocative, honest look at the seemingly intractable issue of drug addiction, and offers powerful alternatives to our current policies.

Hooked: A must-read for the curious, the professional, and the taxpayers........2007-07-18
Hooked is a facinating story of five peoples lives and should be read for this alone. The author does a great job of telling their stories. Painlessly wrapped inside these stories is a Masters Degree on the drug treatment system.
Hooked will give you an insight into drug treatment systems without the bias of the creators. Hooked will give you years of development history and terminology.
Finally, if your state or county is going to start or start-over a drug treatment program Hooked will tell you the best approach. The approach selected has results that clearly make it the plan of choice. (Read the book for the answer.)
Hooked: Five Addicts Challenge Our Misguided Drug Rehab System.......2007-01-04
I work in the drug-use prevention field. I purchased this book for my own education. I became emotionally involved in the lives of the drug addicts featured in the book. It was beneficial to learn about their backgrounds and to see their daily lives in detail. I learned a great deal and am even more passionate about my work now!
Hooked: heartbreaking, but hopeful.......2005-07-16
This book is amazing. I rarely give books 5 stars, but this one is exceptional - fair, honest, compassionate without being treacly, thorough, thoughtful, well-written. Shavelson does a remarkable job profiling his subjects, the reasons for their drug use and how it turned into abuse, and the challenges they face just finding treatment (not to mention completing it). He describes each program fully and carefully before evaluating them, so that the reader can understand the basis for his criticisms and form her own opinion. Despite the sad outcomes of some subjects, Shavelson offers the reader a glimmer of hope by showing us what is likely to work, why addicts are worth saving, and why numerous "second chances" at treatment are necessary and eventually pay off. Read this book!
our rehab process.......2002-10-10
drug rehab right between the eyes that pulls no pun ches and shows us where we need to go next
A must read for those interested in the subject.......2002-09-16
Hooked is a very good book. It starts of as one of those investigative journalist things with a description of real drug addicts. Often books of this type look at these people as if they were the inmates of a zoo, but rather than doing that the book uses their problems to illustrate the difficulties which plague organisations which provide assistance to drug addicts.
One woman suffers from a combination of mental illness and drug abuse. Her attempts to find help are continually frustrated by the fact that when she applies for assistance from mental health professionals she is told that she has a drug problem and she is referred onwards. When she speaks to drug agencies she is told that she has a mental health problem and told to see a psychologist. In the last chapter of the book she is able to find an agency which will help her, but this occurs only after the intervention of one of the doctors. The intake staff is concerned about accepting her as they prefer people who have fewer problems and who are easy to deal with.
A lot of the book is focused on one person Mike who attends a live in facility for close to a year. His story illustrates how current rehabilitation facilities fail to have access to services such as detoxification and also use ritual humiliation as a means of controlling the inmates. Mike breaks a rule by developing a relationship with another inmate. He has to sit in a chair for three days and to go through a re-education session similar to those that featured in the Chinese Cultural Revolution. The author makes the point that the people running the program are generally untrained and not able to work out when such treatment is appropriate or whether those who might be put through it could suffer from major mental illnesses. Those people who suffer from substance abuse problems generally will have a background of some difficulty. In this case Mike was a person who was raped repeatedly as a child. There was however no psychological treatment available in the program. More important however is the inability of the program to deal with relapse. Drug addiction is a problem that is often defined by the tendency to relapse. However the response of Mikes program was to kick him out. That is despite the fact that if allowed back into the program his prognosis would have been good.
The author is an admirer of the Drug Court system. The reason for his admiration is that the Drug Court is better able to make the diverse and not well functioning elements of the treatment system accountable. Thus they use relapses to build the drug addicts skills in dealing with their addiction so that they are more likely to stay clean. They can also ensure that rehab placements accept people, provide them with appropriate care and they can also direct addicts to detoxification.
The book is not only an interesting discussion of the issues the author is able to interest the reader in the story of the addicts he studies. One can see them as humans and follow their struggle to get on top of their problems and to live lives as valuable citizens. A book which should be a must read for anyone with an interest in the area.

Very Worthwhile!.......2007-05-23
I bought this book in a bookshop here in Tokyo actually after reading through it, I worked in Japanese resturants both in Australia and Japan for about 4 years and after making a change in my line of work I wanted a reference book on some of the areas that I didn't get time to learn in full. I'd made Sushi professionally but wasn't doing it long enough to rotate through all of the different areas of prep
There are very good step by step picture (glossy photos) instructions for how to cut fish and prepare different types of fish plus there are some great novelty chirashi items for kids too.
The proof in the pudding for me though was the part on Shari (sushi rice), if that more fundumental part isn't good then it calls the quality of the whole book into question. It was certainly not lacking!
In the end, with the sushi rice in this book so good the fact that there are lots of imaginative recipes in here that you might get in a japanese home but never in a resturant on top of the standard stuff really makes this book worth while. All the fundamentals are here, plus a lot of fun stuff so you get to involve yourself to a level that suits you.
Good For Learning how to cut and recognize fish .......2007-02-22
Great details on how to slice the parts of the fish and how to distinguish fish.

Great book.......2001-04-25
This book is great for small quilts and easy to adjust to larger sizes. For strip piecing you need to convert the templates using the dimensions of the template size which isn't a problem. Great basic patterns and good instructions. The first quilt I ever made was one out of this book, and since then I've made 5 different patterns from it and will eventually make all.

Carol Ilson has written a readable, interesting and informative book about the career of Broadway's foremost director/producer, Harold Prince. It covers all of his shows from Pajama Game to Parade, a forty year career. It's a book that should be eagerly read by theater-goers and anyone interested in the American Musical Theater. Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Carol Ilson's Harold Prince: A Director's Journey is the definitive biographical work on one of the most successful and influential men of Broadway and American musical theatre during the decade of the 1990s.
