Hast Thou Considered My Servant Job? .......2007-06-18
J.B. is a modern day (1950s) retelling of the biblical story of Job. To summarize: Job, God's most loyal servant, is punished by God without reason. God only wishes to prove that no matter what obstacles God threw at him, Job would still "praise God." While the story of Job makes a deep point about human suffering and the strength of faith, J.B. delves deeper.
The play centers on a dialogue between two characters, Zuss and Nickles, who play God and Satan respectively. Each makes important points about the root of suffering and God's role in Job's pain. Zuss argues, in more words or less, that Job has no right to question God. Nickles, instead, sympathizes with Job's pain believing that God has been unfair to mankind and especially to this man. Please grant that these are simplifications of their arguments, one can write novels on the meaning of this play.
Its not hard to imagine how the play ends, but like many things it's the journey not the destination that matter. The banter between the two, and satirical overtones of throwing the whole setting in a circus tent, take the reader beyond the norm. This is a story that requires the reader to engage, be prepared to think! You can not help but question your spirituality and faith during the play. For while few of us suffer as Job does, fewer still believe in God. Would you be able to still love God, if he took everything away from you?
I'll be straightforward and admit that my review is biased. MacLeish's J.B. has been (since reading it in my High School AP English Class) my favorite. I'm an avid reader, but there's something so subtly beautiful about MacLeish's language, something so deep in his words that have resounded in my heart, that I am compelled to re-read this play over and over again. MacLeish has a profound message to teach us "modern, disillusioned men" that one would have to have a heart of stone not to appreciate.
The Book of Job in present times.......2006-02-24
I was familiar with J.B. when it first came out in the late 50's or early 60's. The story of the Book of Job was updated to a time when nuclear war was a possibility, and that was the backdrop for J.B.'s (Job's) losses. With the terrorist threat now prevalent in the world, the play is now more timely than ever.
Modern take.......2003-10-12
Macleish's modern rendition of the Book of Job does an adequate job of converting the serious tale to a modern almost circus like story. Although sardonic at times, he keeps the main focus intact: WHY DO THE RIGHTEOUS SUFFER?
JB and Job.......2002-12-10
This play in verse is a modern take on one of the timeless questions of suffering during our lives. In this instance,JB loses his wealth, health and family and during the ensuing discussions with his "friends", it beomes evident that the story is not about suffering, but about faith.Very powerful, but short, descriptive scenes and dialogue.
Ecouraging book.......2000-09-12
This is a play based on the book of Job. It takes you through his struggle and faithfulness to God. After having a lot of land, good cattle and sheep, and a happy family, he is tested. Satan says he will curse God to his face if he doesn't have wealth, a family, or health. Satan is proved wrong. Job stays faithful to the Lord and in the end is rewarded with more than he ever started off with.
I enjoyed this book. It is a accurate play in terms of the Bible, although it is not quoted, it helps you too understand the story of Job and it helps you understand what it means to be faithful to God in good times and also in bad times, for he is always there. I recommend it for anyone dealing with any problems or anyone who liked the Book of Job.

Book Description
It was at the instigation of C.G. Jung that Dr. Kluger undertook the interpretation of the Gilgamesh Epic, the oldest known epic-myth. A classic in world literature, it originated in the Sumero-Babylonian culture, a vital root of modern Western civilization. Rich in poetic imagery and archetypal content, it has not lost its meaning for modern man. In this book, based primarily on her seminars at the Zurich Jung Institute, Dr. Kluger deals with the psychological significance of the hero-king's fateful adventures, from his building of the city walls to his travel to the "Babylonian Noah" in search of immortality, for which her expertise in the fields of comparative religion and Jungian psychology uniquely fit her. In her vivid yet scholarly presentation, she brings alive the implications of the fascinating episodes of this myth both on a personal and on a collective level; the changes of individual consciousness, and its reactions to unconscious (archetypal) contents, the evolving process of individuation, and the development of religion. Using modern dreams and examples from analytic practice, she shows the relevance of this ancient myth for today's world and its concerns, from sexuality and homosexuality, the role of the feminine and the still living goddess Ishtar, to the current spiritual search of contemporary mankind.

A Deeper Look Into The Epic.......2004-08-08
This is an interesting look at the significance of Gilgamesh in relation to other ancient literature. It includes a lot of insightful information on what different parts of the Epic represent in terms of the Sumerian and Babylonian civilizations. For the most part, she uses Alexander Heidel's translation of the epic for her observations. The only weakness of this book as far as I am concerned, is that it was put together after the author's death, and much of it is clearly based on her lectures. I think if she had a chance to organize her materials into book form, the result would have been even better. As it is, this is still a very good resource for those interested in learning more about the Gilgamesh epic.
Gilgamesh is a timeless story.......1999-10-25
A well-done book. I had read the Epic of Gilgamesh and always enjoyed it, but now that I am familar with the archetypical aspects I have a much greater understanding of the story. She makes many parallels to other myths which were helpful in a greater understanding. I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the psychological aspects of myths and the Gilgamesh Epic in particular.

A Helpful Guide for Overcoming Prescription Drug Addiction
Customer Reviews:
Communicates to the reader in plain English.......2003-02-03
This book explains addiction in real life terms...no fancy medical terminology or diagnosis. The author opens with his own personal story regarding the loss of his brother to perscription drug addiction. The book is also full of other personal stories which reveal the horrors not only endured by the addict, but by the addicts family, friends, and co-workers. This book is a must for anyone who is an addict, or for anyone who's life is being affected by one.
An Excellent Book.......2001-11-08
An outstanding piece of work about a very serious drug problem. This book would be helpful to addicts who wish to recover. It would also be enlightening to family members who suffer due to a loved one's addiction.
A Very Helpful Book.......2000-10-29
This book gave me some excellent insights on recovery from prescription drug addiction. It was very helpful, since very little has been written about this topic.
Fabulous resource for anyone dealing with this problem.......1999-08-23
This book is a must for anyone coping with prescription drug abuse in the family. As Rod Colvin points out, this type of addiction is a hidden problem in the U.S., yet it is so destructive to so many people. Unfortunately, the news media doesn't give it nearly the attention it deserves. This book provides a lot of good information and a lot of answers.
A real eye-opener.......1999-08-21
Colvin does a first rate job of exposing what is usually firmly held as a family secret--the abuse of prescription medications. His own family affected by this "hidden epidemic," Colvin goes the difficult distance to uncover the facts surrounding "legal" drug abuse in this country. Meticulously researched and documented. --Publisher's Report, National Assoc. of Independent Publishers.

NOT A RELIABLE HISTORY LESSON!.......2007-02-13
I'm not reviewing the crafts but the history sections of the book. There are many mistakes and untruths to be found throughout.
The author defines LSD as " a NARCOTIC drug." The dictionary definition of narcotic: "any of a class of substances that blunt the senses, as opium, morphine, belladonna, and alcohol, that in large quantities produce euphoria, stupor, or coma, that when used constantly can cause habituation or addiction, and that are used in medicine to relieve pain, cause sedation, and induce sleep." Anyone who knows anything knows that acid is not a narcotic drug.
The author can't get Timothy Leary's famous dictum right: "Turn on, tune in, drop out" turns into "Tune in, turn on, drop out" and the meaning of the phrase is altered significantly.
The author sites Neal Cassady as a beat writer like Jack Kerouac, when Cassady was merely the inspiration for Kerouac's character Dean Moriarty in his famous beat novel "On the Road".
The author sites Cassady as the chief of the Merry Pranksters, when everyone knows it was novelist Ken Kesey. The author then continues with (paraphrased) "Cassady and his Merry Pranksters held an Acid Test in which they put acid in the FOOD and beverageS (actually only a barrel or barrels of Kool Aid were spiked at the tests), and to those looking on, these drugged people were babbling incoherently, sometimes injuring themselves, and even killing themselves because of it." Outrageous! BABBLING INCOHERENTLY? INJURING AND KILLING THEMSELVES? - MISINFORMATION!
It wasn't and isn't about fashion anyway. I find this book to be absolutely horrendous.
Great 60's crafts ideas for today.......2006-05-14
Great photos and ideas to make simple crafts. I was born in the late 1960's and remember making macrame crafts in school in the 1970's.
Also a plus is a brief explanation to the cultural climate of what was going on in the 60's....from clothes, commune living, and even the health food industry that was founded by the Hippies.
This book is a great refresher to those that lived through those times, and those who are in their twenties and just discovering what Hippies were about.
great projects.......2005-02-14
awesome craft projects. so why only four stars? why is it neccessary to put a section on how great all the drug usage in the sixties was? I wanted so much to buy this book for my 12 year old daughter because I know she would really enjoy the projects but I just could not in good conscience get her a book with a chapter on drug usage like it was this wonderful cultural phenomenon.
Great book! .......2004-12-01
I just got this book yesterday, and have already finished reading all of the information inside. It has great craft projects, incredible information about the hippie era, and I would recommend this book to anyone interested in hippie crafts, or anyone who wants to know about a hippie's hobbies.

A "Must Read" for home buyers.......2006-06-12
I highly recommend this book to all home buyers who are interested in knowing about the different components of a house and how to get a sense of the condition of those components relatively easily.
****************
Pluses
****************
I am a first time home buyer and have been trying to gather general information on how to get a sense of the condition of a house while looking at them. The books uses pictures and describes in detail different components of a house and how to get a sense of what is right or wrong with them. The book also introduces different construction materials and how that can impact the condition of the house. The author does a terrific job of giving useful information. I think the book has given me sufficient knowledge to have meaningful conversations with the home inspector. Most importantly I have the confidence that i wont unknowingly get stuck with a house that will require expensive "surpirse repairs".
************
Minus
***********
As a person who did not know anything on this subject, i had to read the book twice and look at pictures multiple times to fully comprehend infomation. This could be partly due to the writing style of the author and how terms are introduced (or just my complete ignorance of the subject). However, I found the pluses to far outweigh the minuses.

Amazing Book, Targets all user levels.......2006-02-01
I got the book a little while ago, and couldn't wait to go through it. I was afraid it would be a step by step droning writer, but I don't think I could have any further from the reality. I think everyone will benefit from the in depth examples, and the greatest part about the book is so much valuable content contained in those pages. If you haven't ordered this book, I highly urge you to as soon as you possibly can.
Before I end this review I would like to add that the Camera Raw plugin is only valuable to people that own those cameras, and I am sure that is why the author didn't include it.
AWESOME!.......2005-11-12
This is by far the best Photoshop CS book out! If your are even thinking about purchasing this book you really should. Its a must! Colin is a master at what he does, his talents are unbelievable he shows exactly what he can do in this book. He gives you detailed descriptions, clear pictures to show you step by step what he is talking about. All his tips and steps are drawn out so well. On a scale of 1-10 on the need to purchase this book, it tips the scales at 20!
Colorful, Effective Book.......2005-03-26
How to do Everything with Photoshop doesn't teach you "everything" but does show some of the key components and techniques in Photoshop that you would most commonly use. First of all, the book is in full color, which makes reading much more interesting. I love how every tutorial has a picture guidance to help you see and visualize the author's techniques. Most of the tutorials are straight to the point, easy to understand and a great stepping stone to get you up and running in Photoshop. I wish the book would show you more photo effect techniques but otherwise, the book is very colorful, vibrant, easy to read, covers the important aspects of Photoshop and pretty cheap at under $20. I would say this is a great beginners book.
You're never too old to learn new tricks............2005-02-14
As a professional graphic designer I know quite a bit about Photoshop - or at least I thought I did. Colin Smith covers it all, from the preferences on up. Everything is explained in a clear, no-nonsense manner. I highly recommend this book to everyone, novice to expert. You're never too old to learn new tricks.
How to do everything with Photoshop CS.......2004-10-07
I can't stress enough how pleased I am with this book. It covers everything. If you are a beginner or advanced user with photoshop this book is for you. I have learned so much!!! Cover to cover this book explains every tool and how to use it effectivly. Packed with step by step tutorials explaining how to reach different effects.
If you use photoshop for print or web, this book explains the methods(ex. use of cymk vs rbg, optimizing images for web publishing) even goes into the use of imageready so you can get your page on the web. The behind the scenes section is great! Shows work from the pro's and some of their techniques. I will be looking for more books from this author.
Book Description
Elvis Presley's army years are often considered the "lost years" because so little is known about them. Elvis's fellow soldier and friend, Rex Mansfield, along with his wife, Elisabeth-with whom Elvis was once romantically linked-reveal a fascinating portrait of young Elvis the soldier. Tales of Elvis and Rex's induction in Memphis, basic training in Texas, and travels to Germany are recounted, and stories of the genesis of Elvis's addiction to prescription drugs, his initial meeting with Priscilla Beaulieu, and his daily life on base and in the homes he rented in Texas and Germany are revealed. Included are many previously unpublished photographs from this important time in Elvis's life.

Very fine book.......2004-03-27
This is an interesting book with rare photos. It's written by two Elvis insiders and I think any Elvis fan would find it worthwhile. Even though I'm a big Elvis fan, I'm glad that Rex and Elisabeth escaped from Elvis' world and gave their lives to the Lord. BTW, the epilogue is the best section of the entire book.
ELVIS GUNG HO PRESLEY.......2003-09-14
I've learned so much this year about Elvis' Army career, first in AROUND ELVIS and now in SGT PRESLEY. Elvis was assigned to the most dangerous duty station in all the world from 1958 to 1960 on the front lines of the Cold war on the Russian Front, where World War III. He was the scout of the 3rd Armor Division, General Patton's unit, and he drove the sergeant that drove Patton, and went ahead of the brigade. 3 months after Elvis was discharged the U2 Spy Plane was shot down and his unit was on it's highest alert since World War II. When the Berlin Wall went up, his old unit was there ready for battle. The point is that even though he was a peacetime soldier he wasn't out playing weekend warrior. His unit was out in the field more than half the time he was over there. And those fields are covered in freezing snow. The same snow that stopped Napoleon and Hitler dead in their tracks. Elvis was a patriot and he was respected by his superiors and peers for his hard work and his good job. He took R.O.T.C in school like all sophomores in the great fighting state of Tennesse do and wore his uniform everywhere. Despite what Joe Esposito has to to say, Elvis earned those stripes. He proudly had his Army montage in the Gold Room at Graceland amid his awards. After he died the only thing found in the money compartment of his wallet was a newspaper clipping of the statement made by TN. Senator Estes Kefauver about him to the 86th Congress of The United Staes after his discharge. After exalting him for not using the power of his fame to shirk his duty, Kefauver exclaimed, "Yours was a job well done soldier!" He carried that with him for 17 years.
