Book Description
'In shimmering prose and with uncommon empathy, Rosen creates a cast of characters plagued by profound spiritual crises...... Not since Saul Bellow has an American novelist created characters so unabashedly determined to unleash their souls, to burst their spirit's sleep.' -Andrew Furman, The Miami Herald Deborah Green is a woman of passionate contradictions- a rabbi who craves goodness and surety while wrestling with her own desires and with the sorrow and pain she sees around her. Her life changes when she visits the hospital room of Henry Friedman, an older man who has attempted suicide. Joy comes in the morning.......2007-05-12
Excellent book. Very well written. A beautiful love story with a few twists and turns. Really enjoyed reading it.
Clergy as "Humans".......2007-03-30
All too often, many of us have expectations from our clergy that are unrealistice. Although the are trained as spiritual leaders, they are, after all is said and done,-just human like the rest of us.
This novel explores how it feels to be a female, Reform Rabbi. If you would like to know what it is like to be in a position like that, this is a good book to read.
Many "issues" are dealt with-Mental illness, aging, dying, love, families, and spiritual crises. It was difficult to "put it down."
Have a little faith in your reader, or yourself.......2006-09-09
Ugh. Nothing I hate more then an author who writes a lovely story and then spoils it at the end with some melodramatic twist that is not relevant to the plot and indicates a lack of faith in one's readers. It may represent the author's world view, but a book should be looked at as an entity with a personality of its own and diversions like the one in this book are silly. Perhaps its not just a recognition of the lack of faith in one's readers, its a lack of faith in the author's ability to hold our attention to the end. Silly.
Otherwise, a great book with very loveable and endearing characters.
A Mixed Bag.......2006-04-07
I enjoyed the author's previous book very much. I 'd like to give this book a 3.5... I really enjoyed the first half of the book - the development of the characters, the writing, the storyline, etc. As someone involved in the Jewish community, I especially enjoyed the Jewish educational piece through the descriptions. as I got started I it really felt like a delightful read for my recent vacation. However, about 1/2 way through (why does this happen with so many books - both fiction and non-fiction!) As the book reached it storyline climax, I cared less about the characters than I did at the beginning. I no longer could believe what was going on.
All in all, I would share this book with friends, but would let them know to expect a book that has some really lovely Jewish parts, but has a mixed story line.
searching to fit in.......2006-02-27
At first I did not think i would like this book.
Because it was very one dimensionally. It felt like I was at first reading a beach read. Some of the events in the book were very quirky, 20-30 somethings. But than I started to relate to what she was going through. She a jew who wanted to become more observant and did not know where she fit in.
Myself, I am in my 40's. I have had a problem since I am just learning about my roots. Even though I was brought up jewish there are things I am torn between the secular world and the jewish.
Even though this is fiction. The book put it in prospective. Especially when you don't know where you fit in. Not so much for the literal form, but that the author knew where I was coming from.
If you like reading a quirky beach romance this is for you. BEWARE
Just like the previous reviewers have said, if you love the book like I had you will be passing it on

"Stories of the Dark Predators Behind Our World".......2003-06-14
"Strange City" is a horror anthology based on White Wolf's World of Darkness storytelling realm. It involves five major "dark predators" (vampires, wraiths, mages, werewolves, and changelings) and takes place in the 'strange city' of San Francisco, California, where the majority of these stories occur. Of the 14 stories, about half are vampire-oriented, like the first one: "Dancing with the Devil" by Keith "Doc" Herber, where a vampire--in the company of his ghoul and Childe--searches for a lost soul to "save." This one is rich in San Francisco history, but the ending is rather disappointing, mainly because the vamp doesn't get his chance to use his large collection of Spanish Inquisition torture tools that were needlessly mentioned at the beginning of the story.
The other thirteen stories are as follows:
"Hunter's Blues" by Scott Ciencin -- A werewolf/blues guitarist seeks revenge against the two assassins that killed his pack. Some musical aspects to the story. >> "Glimpses of Before" by John H. Steele -- Lots of detail about a man's life remembered after death. Depressing, a bit long-winded. >> "The Voice of the Hummingbird" by S. P. Somtow -- The longest short story here (41 pages). Like "Dancing with the Devil," it's full of ancient history, this time about the Aztecs, in particular a mummified Aztec vampire that comes back to life and tells his story to a museum curator. >> "The Bye-Bye Club" by Ray Winninger -- An orphan boy enters a children's club that's driven by murder. Good story (nice and short), but the ending's a bit too abrupt. >> "The Way It Goes" by Thomas Kane -- When an assassin botches an assignment, he goes on the run for fear of being killed himself. My favorite Wraith story. >> A homeless young woman meets a Toreador vampire in a coffee shop and discovers he's the author of one of her favorite poetry chapbooks, entitled "The Scarlet Letters" (by Scott H. Urban). My favorite Vampire story. >> "Descent" by Sam Chupp -- A Tremere's lesbian lover is abducted and used to lure her into a pact with the Sabbat.
"Wolf Trap" by Richard Lee Byers -- A werewolf is hired to bust a mental patient out of an asylum, but ends up getting trapped on the grounds instead. My favorite Werewolf story. >> "Shards" by Phil Brucato -- A young werewolf is outcast from her pack, as well as dumped by her human boyfriend. Short, quick story. Not too sure about the point of it, though, if there is one. >> "Rootbound" by R. S. Martin -- An obsessed man creates the image of a woman he loves out of wood and roots. Surreal, descriptive writing. Not a lot of action though. >> "The Art of Dying" by Lawrence Watt-Evans -- A vampire attempts to Embrace a talented artist into the Toreador clan, though another vamp wants him as well. As mentioned in the story, it's like the story of Solomon and the two mothers fighting over a baby. Good ending. >> "The Waters of Lethe" by Bill Bridges -- During several sessions with a psychologist, a man with amnesia tries to piece together his past. >> "Power" by Don Bassingthwaite -- A Ventrue forensic pathologist gets involved in one too many murder cover-ups. Good finale.
Most of the stories in "Strange City" are relatively bloody and gruesome (no splatterpunk though), which should appeal to most horror fans, but particularly to readers who have some familiarity with one or more of the WoD games. Of course, you don't need to be an expert (I'm certainly not), but it does help. As mentioned in the intro of this book, readers who are "in the know" of storytelling games like Vampire: The Masquerade, Werewolf: The Apocalypse, and Wraith: The Oblivion will probably enjoy this "game fiction" anthology a lot more than the average horror reader.
Good stuff.......2002-02-16
This is a good collection of World of Darkness stories. "Wolf Trap" and "Glimpses of Before" were really good, probably the best ones in there. I was very disappointed, though, that it states on the cover that it includes stories about mages and changelings, and not a one even mentioned either. Still, these are top-notch tales.
Book Description
This is everything you ever wanted to know about the pelvis but were afraid to ask. Louis Schultz examines the male pelvis under the dual lens of culture and science. North American culture prizes male strength, upper-body bulk, and muscularity, but ignores male genitalia for anything other than sexual function. The author strives to increase knowledge of this body region with a guide to male pelvic anatomy and a discussion of male sexual pleasure and emotions.
Customer Reviews:
Good info for all men and women........2005-09-13
Not sure what I expected, but I did find the presentation thorough, helpful and logical. Much of the general background can be found in other soucebooks and the internet but it was useful to have the information all in one location. The author did help me to identify long-standing posture problems as related to lower back pain. As a manual for structure and function, the book is very good; the sections on pelvic movements are very clearly explained. Unfortunately, the references to Rolfing and bodywork seem too vague
Practical, informative, fascinating.......2002-09-15
This is a superb book. It is written particularly for Rolfers, but is essential reading for any other body worker as well. Since studying this book on my own, I have become much more confident doing pelvic massage with male clients. Having detailed knowledge of the underlying structures allows me to explain to men what I'm doing and why. Clients can be informally instructed at the same time they are made more comfortable with touch in this area. For this reason, the book is valuable for all men who want to learn about their own bodies.
The text is clearly written and technical terms are explained. A particular strength is close-up photos of the genital areas of a variety of men. Each of these is paired with a line drawing of the same scale based on that photograph and showing the underlying anatomy. This arrangement makes it easy to relate what one sees on the table during a session with what one is feeling beneath the skin as one works.
Other chapters on foetal and juvenile genital development, posture, and sexuality are also very informative.
I have no hesitation at all in giving this excellent book five stars.
Penis, Male Pelvis and Pubic Area: Explored in Depth.......2002-08-09
The author has written an intelligent, frank and provoking book about the area of the body least talked about in an intelligent, frank and provoking manner. I consider this book essential for anyone in the "body work" field. It is a well written authoritive work by a scientist well versed in anatomy, physiology, and somatics. An excellent and important book for any Medical Doctor, Psychologist or Physical Therapist yet easily understood and enjoyed by someone with a less scientific mind. In fact, I consider this book a "MUST READ" for P.T.'s, Massage Therapists, and all body workers, consultants and trainers who work with men. I would also consider this book an excellent primer for any one (woman OR man) involved in a sexual, romantic, or loving relationship with a male. It is the equivalent of the famous "Our Bodies Our Selves" only about men. I recommend this book with highest praises!
Incredible..........2002-01-04
This book hits on a subject that is rarely ever spoken of. It addresses issues of the male anatomy that I've long suspected were problematic, but on which I could never find any information. The book is informative and eye opening. If you're male, you should read this!
Letting Go of Tension in the Pelvis.......2000-12-08
Schultz's work breaks through barriers. By treating a formerly taboo area in body work--the male pelvis--he demonstrates how the lack of attention to that area has only increased the tension that our culture has inculcated in men. Professionally, with diagrams and photos, he shows how bodyworkers can assist their clients in releasing the pelvic tightness that has accumulated over the years for social psychological reasons. This hands on book is a must read for all bodyworkers and is obviously based on a lifetime of experience in the field. He ends with a discussion of healthy male sexuality as opposed to the sexual and postural dysfunction that can result from unhealthy pelvic tension and its resulting malformation.

Well presented book with representative recipes.......1998-07-18
I have not tried all of the recipes yet. The tea smoked duck was fabulous. The beef with sesame was mediocre. Having just been to China, I can vouch that these recipes are both authentic and representative.
Customer Reviews:
Best book for beginning asian cooking..........2003-02-12
This book is incredible. First, the photography is excellent, beautifully portraying most of the recipes. The book begins with a complete listing of all of the ingredients used. It is about 6 pages of pertinent information, including pictures for some of the most obscure ingredients. The recipes cover a thorough range of the basic recipes that you may be looking for. I am Indian and am thrilled with the list. Just about every recipe is critical, they appear back-to-back and have several pictures. I will probably cook every recipe in the Indian section. That section alone makes it worth the purchase. However, it covers seven other asian cuisines in a very similar manner. It also offers enticing "melting pot" menus, mixing the cuisines. You will get the recipes you want, that you can make, with a little commentary and exquisite pictures. This is one of the best cook books I have ever seen.

Tasty.......2006-09-03
I first noticed this cookbook in the Beijing airport. I was happy to find this cookbook on Amazon. The recipe for hot and sour soup is great. There are a lot of pictures, which I find helpful because I'm still learning how to cook Chinese dishes. The cookbook is only 120 pages or so, but the recipes it includes are the ones I wanted to find in a Chinese cookbook, so I don't mind that it's short. I highly recommend this cookbook.

Book Description
An affectionate homage to the British tradition of tea-drinking and to the greatest tea biscuits of all time, from the Custard Cream to the Pink Wafer.
Put a cup of tea in your hand, and what else can you do but sit down? This new book celebrates that most British of life's cornerstones: the tea break. There is, however, another element to this ritual that is a must: biscuits. As Nicey so rightly points out, a cup of tea without a biscuit is a missed opportunity. Finding the right biscuit for the right occasion is as much an art as it is a science, and it is a task that Nicey has selflessly worked on for most of his tea-drinking life. From dunking to the Digestive, the Iced Gem to the Garibaldi, everything you'll ever need to know about British biscuits is in this book, and quite a lot more besides. So go on. Put the kettle on, take a weight off, and enjoy.
Customer Reviews:
After a nice sit down..........2007-01-04
Loved this book. Nicey has a wonderful, witty tone and covers the essentials to British tea drinking and biscuit dunking. Wonderful review of the various biscuits with photos, good guide for those who are new to the art of biscuit buying. Wifey manages to keep everything on topic.
Perfect Read...again...and again...and again..........2006-09-10
It has quickly become one of my favorite books. I happen to be a tea fanatic, so obviously a book about tea and biscuits would suit me just fine. However, I am also quite particular about the books I adore, and this one fits the bill. Well written by an obviously intelligent human being, but also extremely witty and informative. I have purchased a copy for my adult brit-loving/tea-loving daughter. She wanted to borrow my copy, but there is no way I am letting it go! Buy it...devour it...come back for more. You won't be sorry.
brilliant.......2005-04-15
This book contains everything you need to know about tea and biscuits when visiting Britain. Never again have the Brits looking down at you in disgust when you don't know the proper protocol for afternoon tea.
Buy it. Read it on the plane on the way over. Never look out of place again at those important business meetings.
Customer Reviews:
Good introductory pamphlet.......2002-08-08
A very nicely done brief discussion of British teaware, mainly cups and coffee cans. The text is short but informative. The pictures are excellent, well selected, and clearly reproduced, with useful captions. Good on handle types. My only objection is the price which is steep for such a very short book, though I feel it was worth it to me because of the fine pictures which I will continue to refer to.
Not worth the time or cost.......2001-07-30
I found the book (40 pg. pamphlet) to be an abbreviated, superfical treatment of the subject. It has limited pictures and text. Perhaps the book does not satisfy my novice tastes, but I have difficulty identifying a constituency to which this book would appeal. If you are looking for a thorough treatment of the subject, try Jim & Susan Harran's book, Cups & Saucers - Identification & Values. Sorry to have wasted my money.

Ugly houses..........2007-08-01
I discovered paper piecing recently and purchased this book, hoping to find some cute houses to make. I was very disappointed with the selection. Some of the houses were cute, such as the lighthouse and the church, but others were pretty awful. The choice of fabric in some was just too wild that the house looked strange. I was also disappointed with the selection of finished projects. Many looked tacky and plain
I guess I would've preferred a finished project that looked like a village, or showed all the blocks at once. Instead you get a few odd wallhangings that didn't appeal to me. Meh. 3 stars. Not the worst I've seen but nothing that makes me want to start piecing.
Hometown Quilts.......2000-07-02
For those who love paper piecing and house blocks, this is a must-have. It has houses of all kinds that depict all lifestyles, skyscrapers, a gazebo, a churchand a light house. You can even add fences!

French Country decorating.......2007-08-22
The book was very informative. It gave me many ideas on how to include my furnishings with a French feel.
A real gem.......2007-05-21
I can see this book is going to sit on the top of the coffee table book pile for a long time to come. Aside from the fabulous photos of French Provincial homes, Dannenberg delicately picks apart the details that make a typical Provincial home and garden. It does the job so much better than we sitting in another continent can grasp from a few photos in a book. It teaches us how to copy this style and really appreciate the quality of each piece of furniture, artwork or chattel we acquire for own little pretend patch of France.
I love this book!
Love this book!.......2007-04-05
Really a wonderful book - both beautiful to look at and informative. Very interesting reading, as well as artistically lovely with wonderful, colorful photography. I am not a decorator or designer by trade, but go to this type of book for creative inspiration, and this one was a winner.
VERY INFORMATIVE.......2007-02-26
Wonderful book on French Country Style. This book is packed with lots of vivid photos but what sets this book apart from all the other styling books is the wealth of information that the author shares with the reader. It is truly a must for any Provencal styling fan.
love it.......2007-02-12
If you want detailed descriptions of French design elements, including their history, this is the book for you. If you just want room pictures, this may not work for you, as it is text-heavy. I just love it.

Paper Engineering: 3D Techniques for a 2D Material.......2007-10-10
Every popup technique is actually demonstrated with a small example! This book has saved me so much time and frustration - excellent reference for anyone who creates popup books!
Practical, Well Designed Learning Tool.......2007-08-22
This book is really a well thought out workbook. The pages are designed so you cut out and assemble the pop-ups, then paste them into the book as a resource. You might want to get two, or to copy the flat page before you cut it out to have a reference for what you started with. All this said, this is an excellent, well thought out learning tool, and because YOU do the assembly, you learn more and pay less. I might have wished for line drawings with more examples of how the pop-ups could be used, but that is a very small quibble, about an outstanding book.
I'm a little disappointed.......2007-07-20
A little disappointed with this book. It is a good place for beginners to start, but doesnt go into the more technical aspects of pop-up construction. The ideas for shapes and pop-ups are explained, followed by a cut/fold/paste model you can put together yourself. However, there are no formulas given about what degrees of angles can be used, what the ratio of the planes to the bases are. Not a bad book, just not as advanced as I had hoped based on the cover drawing. Yes...I judged the book by it's cover :)
Awesome Book.......2007-03-21
This book is awesome -- teaching you the principles of paper engineering so you can make countless creations.
Artsy-Craftsy, not just Artsy.......2007-03-17
The book contains templates from which one is able to base designs, which is nice, however most of the designs were not exactly what I was wanting. Everything is kind of basic and "craftsy", whereas I was searching for something more art-oriented, more detailed and creative. Thankfully, I bought this with another, which exceeded all my expectations. The title of that book is The Pop-Up Book: Step-by-Step Instructions for Creating over 100 Original Paper Projects.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful biography of a great singer.......2006-06-03
I've read a considerable number of biographies of great opera singers and this has to rank as one of the best. It is told in a forthright manner and actually makes it possible to visualize the singer and his personality. Tibbett was a very great singer and a great man as well during the best periods of his life (not much of a father though). The authors describe his abilities extremely well and cover his life very thoroughly from his childhood and early successes to his eventual downfall. Tibbett's later vocal problems and then social and physical decline made the last part of the book somewhat depressing, but the authors seemed to be trying to cover these parts honestly. I would very highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about this singer.
This book does lack a discography unfortunately, but that is to be found in a companion volume by the same publisher.
I would also strongly suggest that any reader listen to a number of Tibbett's recordings to understand how truly great a singer and performer he was.
