Creates a useful framework for thinking about one's life.......2007-01-18
Like Persig's earlier book 'Zen and the art of Motorcycle Maintenance' this book uses the same technique as Plato's dialogues to discuss philosophical ideas.
The basic idea in all three works is to use an actual event (like fixing a motorcycle) as an example to discuss a general principle of philosophy. I always found Plato strange because he argued that specific cases should be deduced from abstract principles, not the other way around (idealism) but used the opposite technique (nominalism) in his writings. At least Persig uses nominalist techniques to argue for a nominalist position. I interpret one of the previous reviews as saying that Persig should have used idealist techniques..............
'Zen...' asked deep questions, and sometimes said there was no definite answer. Seventeen years later, Persig thinks he has some new answers. I agree. I often find myself using the ideas he taught me, to understand myself and the world. What more could I ask?
Problems.......2006-07-25
I had a number of problems with this book. To begin with, those of you who are familiar with Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance are probably aware that the main premise of this book contradicts the moral he drew from his last one. He takes an indescribable and undividable conception of quality, and proceeds to describe and divide it. To make matters worse, he makes the same mistake as philosophers throughout history by failing to realize that pure abstractions like dynamic and static quality are obscure and fail to describe reality as we experience it.
These, however, are minor criticisms compared to this: Almost all of the ideas in this book have already been written by the process philosophers. In particular, Pirsig rips off Henri Bergson to an astounding degree and Bergson is much more clear about his ideas. Basically, my recomendation would be to avoid this book entirely and pick up 'The Creative Mind: An Introduction to Metaphysics' by Henri Bergson instead and see for yourself what I've been trying to say.
Commitment Phobia.......2006-07-04
After ten years or so, all that stayed with me was the main character barely being able to wait for Lila to leave, then once she does, he fantasizes about the wonderful life they would have had together, and how he could have "helped" her. This is a perfect example of what is popularly referred to as "commitment phobia."
Also the name "Lila Blewitt" sounded like something out of a Thomas Pynchon novel. She had potential but she blew it?
Hot & Cold, Excellent & Awful.......2006-06-23
Several instances during my reading of this book I put it down for good. At times, it was so awful I couldn't waste another minute of my life on it. It would sit on the table for a few days, then I would be compelled to pick it up again. Eventually the book rose out of these doldrums and grew into a book of decent quality. Towards then end, it picked up so much steam I made it my primary book, as opposed to a book I read when I had the chance. Overall, the book is a 3 star read for me, based on the fact that half of it is absolutely awful and half of it is quite entertaining.
The parts of the book I found most indigestible were his introductory series of philosophical thought in what I suppose is an attempt to properly set up his further philosophical arguments later on. For me, this doesn't work. Too often he fuses the insecurities of his own life into the narrative instead of properly setting up later discussion. His passages are often rantings of a proverbial madman, unfocused and bent on addressing various incidents he has endured since the writing of his first work, the brilliant Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.
While reading these initial chapters I found myself thinking this book could only hinder the legacy of Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. It's like a baseball player hitting a grand slam on the first at bat of his career, only to strike out every time he comes to the plate after that. As the narrative wears on, he stops striking out. But it becomes apparent he will never again hit the long ball, instead producing more like a singles and doubles hitter.
Later in the book, when we have gotten past the long-winded philosophical setups, the baggage from his life, and the absolutely awful story, Pirsig ventures into various philosophical discussions I started to find fascinating. By the end of the book, I was hoping Pirsig had more books I could pick up. Sadly, this is it. At this point in time it seems unlikely he will produce anything else. So we're left to distill what we can out of this and his first offering.
I can't claim Pirsig is a modern day philosophical genius. He is no such thing. What he is, ironically, is someone who can convey his philosophical ideas to the common reader in a clear and concise manner...sometimes. Try reading Hume or Kant, and soon you'll find yourself asleep in the middle of the day. Pirsig, while assuredly not concise enough for modern philosophical inquiry, is nonetheless easy to read. More importantly, he speaks to a real reader, not someone who needs to be steeped in classical philosophy. I found these qualities more prevalent as we approach the end of the book.
This doesn't mean I find the book outstanding, or worthy of the apparent online community that exists for this work - not at all. In fact, I still find this work solidly mediocre when taken as a whole. It's certainly worth the read as long as you're willing to push your way through the first 150 pages or more. Assuming you can get that far, the book is rich and rewarding at times. However, if you're looking for a brilliant sequel to Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, this isn't going to cut the mustard.

Book Description
Tales from a Draconian Shore are stories about things happening to normal people, just as they could to anyone, any time. That is, if you're the sort of person who believes in things you may not always be able to see or touch. The Whatever Else Is Out There series shows that, perhaps, this isn't the only world where people live ordinary lives. It also shows the affects of what happens if those two worlds collide. The Tunnels of ASU shows that, perhaps, that which is hidden should remain hidden. Boone Church is about good friends trying to scare each other at a party. Ouija Wrong Number shows those same friends being scared by forces they probably should not be playing with. Allergic to the Sun is pure Vampire justice.

Tales from a Draconian* Shore.......2004-06-11
It's not Draconean... Besides Amazon's poor use of spelling, this is a totally awesome book. It's really good to read if you only get a couple minutes a day out of a busy schedule. The characters are full of life and are seemingly realistic. This will be a treasured book to add to my collection.
I look forward to reading more of Ms. Kendall's work.
A great new book by a great new author!.......2004-06-10
I read Tales from a Draconian Shore by Anjie Kendall after coming across it on Amazon. Normally, I am hesitant to read books by authors that I don't know, or that have not been recommended to me, but I came across it while looking for stories about North Carolina and since she is local to the area I am interested in, I thought I would give it a try.
The book is a collection of short stories, each more interesting than the next. It is a short read, but just perfect when you want some downtime to get away from it all. My favorite was Boone Church.
I'm looking forward to reading more of Ms. Kendall's writing.

"The words shut up are the most terrible words I know," writes Nancy Venable Raine. "The man who raped me spat these words out over and over during the hours of my attack--when I screamed, when I tried to talk him out of what he was doing, when I protested." It took Raine seven years before she could start to remove the chains those words had wrapped around her spirit by writing about how the anonymous assailant had transformed her forever. "I have noted what has come into my view as I go about my life," she says, "seeing the world through the eyes of a woman who remembers rape." Raine brings a poet's attention to language and imagery to her account, infusing After Silence with powerful immediacy. The reader is made to understand why an event as seemingly innocuous as a landlord asking for a spare set of keys to one's apartment can strike dread into one's heart. As Raine takes us through her personal journey of recovery, she also explores the shifting cultural consciousness toward rape, from the acknowledgement of posttraumatic stress suffered by rape victims to the portrayal of rape in movies. It's this willingness to interrogate the world around her, combined with an emotional honesty that portrays intimate drama without resorting to sensationalism, that makes After Silence one of the most important memoirs of the 1990s. --Ron Hogan
Book Description
"Silence has the rusty taste of shame. The words shut up are the most terrible words I know. . . . The man who raped me spat these words out over and over during the hours of my attack--when I screamed, when I tried to talk him out of what he was doing, when I protested. It seemed to me that for seven years--until at last I spoke--these words had sunk into my soul and become prophecy. And it seems to me now that these words, the brutish message of tyrants, preserve the darkness that still covers this pervasive crime. The real shame, as I have learned, is to consent to them."
After Silence is Nancy Venable Raine's eloquent, profoundly moving response to her rapist's command to "shut up," a command that is so often echoed by society and internalized by rape victims. Beginning with her assault by a stranger in her home in 1985, Raine's riveting narrative of the ten-year aftermath of her rape brings to light the truth that survivors of traumatic experiences know--a trauma does not end when you find yourself alive.
Just as devastating as the rape itself was the silence that shrouded it, a silence born of her own feelings of shame as well as the incomprehension of others. Raine gives shape, form, and voice to the "unspeakable" and exposes the misconceptions and cruelties that surround this prevalent though hidden crime. With formidable power and in intimate detail, she probes the long-term psychological and physiological aftereffects of rape, its tangled sexual confusions, the treatment of rape by the media and the legal and medical professions, and contemporary cultural views of victimhood.
For anyone, female or male, who has suffered from or witnessed the shattering effects of rape,
After Silence inspires and points the way to healing. This landmark book is a stunning literary achievement that is a testimony to the power of language to transform the worst sort of violation and suffering into meaning and into art.

Profound and Courageous.......2007-04-14
A friend loaned this book to me but it is likely a book I will never forget. Nancy Venable Raine tells her important story in a very accessible way. As a nurse who took care of rape victims in the middle 80's and now a school nurse, I am aware that the secret of abuse and assault reverberates in too many lives. And while I would never say that my experiences as a young nurse were equivalent to those of my patients, I vividly remember hearing my victim-patients stories and identifying with them. Many of my victim-patients were not that different from me--young, single, living alone. During that time, I _usually_ slept with the lights on because I wanted to try to be able to identify my perpetrator, if that ever happened to me.
Raine shows us her story, how it echoes in her life. Coming back from and integrating the experience in life is not, cannot be easy but one cannot help but feel she is one of the minority of individuals who gets the needed help to do so.
Now, in year 2007, I was acutely aware that at times Raine paired the rape experience and the torture experience. It is a source of sadness to me that we, as a nation, are perpetuating that experience for so many. There is something profound about her description of the rape victim as a container for her perpetrator's anger. And that is far from the only profound idea.
Having also read "Lucky" by Alice Sebold, I would say they are both very important books but this book is a far better glimpse into the recovery aspect.
After Silence: Rape and MY Journy Back.......2006-11-11
I had to read this book for one of my Woman's Studies classes at Western Illinois University. I think this is a must read book for everyone (especially those who are in recovery or have been convicted of a violent crime of this nature). It is a bit graphic and I don't recomend that anyone under high school age read it. I had to set it down a couple of times due to that, but, it was nessessary to truely understand Ms. Raine's story. You don't truely understand what someone goes though after rape without going through it yourself.
Considering whether or not to hide.......2006-09-16
"Throw away the lights, the definitions
And say of what you see in the dark" - Wallace Stevens
"Speech is civilization itself. The word . . . preserves contact - it is silence which isolates." - Thomas Mann
Following her rape, this author became a completely different person, a person who lived "with sudden fear the way others live with cancer. The fear was always there." It took seven years before she could begin writing about her experience. She states that the anniversary of her rape "was more significant than my own birthday, and yet there was only silence . . . I had become, the one who marked her anniversaries in silence . . . Could I celebrate my survival in silence and alone? Not according to Webster's, which defines the verb "to celebrate" this way: "to perform (a sacrament or solemn ceremony) publicly and with appropriate rites" . . . It pained my family and friends to remember. To acknowledge my experience might bring up what they hoped I had forgotten . . . for me to remind them that I had not forgotten seemed unkind, even cruel, because I knew they needed to believe I had. Our rite was, therefore, silence."
"I thought about Wittgenstein's observation that the limits of language are the limits of reality. Was rape off limits to our most distinctly human attribute - language? . . . I could no longer consent to silence."
Another friend and rape victim asked her, "How do I tell people who don't know, people who might become close friends? If I don't tell them, it makes it a secret, like something to be ashamed of. When I do tell them, they make it worse. They never ask me about it. It'a a part of me, part of who I am now, but they don't want to know about it. It's no-win. Just no-win."
"But silence has the rusty taste of shame. The words 'shut up' are the most terrible words I know. I cannot hear them without feeling cold to the bone. The man who raped me spat those words out over and over during the hours of my attack - when I screamed when I tried to talk him out of what he was doing, when I protested . . . The real shame, as I have learned, is to consent to them."
So she wrote an essay "Returns of the Day" in The New York Times Magazine in 1994. In response "Without exception, all of the letters from survivors described the isolation of the aftermath of rape, its life-altering transfromations."
"The victims of rape must carry their memories with them for the rest of their lives. They must not also carry the burden of silence and shame."
If you have friend or family member dealing with these issues (and the odds are that you do), here are other books that are also excellent on this and related topics, "Lucky" & "The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold, & "Siolence" edited by Susan McMaster - all written by women. Rape victims and victims of relationship violence and abuse often hide their experiences and the behaviors of their abusers, feeling ashamed for even being involved with the abusive patterns. All of these books suggest women become more free and mentally at ease when they realize there is nothing to be ashamed of about being victimized. And they suggest the causes of our silences and the things we hide probably deserve more attention, new perspectives, and reconsideration.

Courageous, powerful, compassionate........2005-09-28
Ms. Raine describes the trauma and recovery of rape in clear and helpful terms and I appreciate the references to other works about rape recovery and feminism. Raine's AFTER SILENCE inspired me to read another landmark TRAUMA AND RECOVERY by Judith Herman, MD. It is hard to find books about rape recovery and people who can and will talk calmly, rationally, compassionately (or at all) about this subject. Raine's AFTER SILENCE should be required reading in high school for both boys and girls! Rape is so widespread that it should be addressed more often by family and friends; local, state, national, and world leaders; educators and news media. Raine also references I NEVER CALLED IT RAPE by Robin Morgan, another excellent source for raising awareness of the frequency and extent of rape in society. My own childhood incest and young adult rape were not known to my parents, siblings and doctors for decades even though the symptoms were so obvious that I was hospitalized for months. Can't praise Raine's work enough. My heartfelt gratitude goes out to Raine and all those who made her work possible. Healing may be slow in coming, but it does come, after the silence, with the help of authors like Raine.

Almost good enough.......2007-08-09
This book is a great research tool but we would have appreciated more photos and a more comprehensive selection of values by piece.
A book well worth buying and reading. .......2004-12-03
I have read this book a number of times and find out something new each time. I find the book well thought out, well photographed, and very informative. I am especially confused about the review from July 2002 that claimed the book had no photos? My book has photos on every page.
PEDESTRIAN PRICE GUIDE.......2004-09-07
I found this guide to be of little use. All of the information contained could be easily gleaned from internet auction sites with little or no effort and no expense. Other guides make an effort to include obscure pricing with much more complete reference. Avoid this one as it is of little help. Find other guides by authors who put a little more effort into their work.
Falls WAY short of helping you Buy and Sell Roseville.......2004-07-20
This is a book that someone puts together so they can say they wrote a book on Roseville- it reminds me of those cheap Printer/Fax/Scanner machines, that claim to do three things but do nothing well. There's just not enough photos, information on Roseville styles, information on fakes, or enough information on anything, to allow you to Buy without risk. In addition, the author should offer FREE price updates on current Roseville market prices at his website, but he doesn't. THERE'S MORE FREE INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET ABOUT ROSEVILLE, THAN THERE IS IN THIS BOOK.
Contains no pictures........2002-07-17
This book is described as having over 840 color pictures. It does not have a single picture...A price book with no pictures is useless to me.
Book Description

Book Description
In an age of "McMansions," this international survey of the latest in residential architecture proves that small is beautiful-and responsible. The houses profiled are designed to make maximum use of the smallest possible footprint in order to protect the environment. The houses profiled here prove that efficiency as well as beautiful, thoughtful design can be had in a tiny setting. Each project includes a case history describing its design challenges and how the architect overcame them, a detailed blueprint for each house, full-color photos of the interior and the exterior, and plans of the layout. This book will be an inspiration to anyone in the interior design or residential architecture field as well as to anyone considering a second home, and proves that environmentally responsible design principles are not just a style but a philosophy for sustainable living.
Customer Reviews:
Small is Beautiful and Less is More...........2007-07-14
As a member of the Small House Society I love this book. The houses are small and to the point without all the clutter some small houses tend to have. And as the title says its Compact Houses: Architecture for the Environment. And in an era of McMansions its so refreshing to see small homes that use small lots to make the best use of the land and provide for the most open and airy feeling home. Or for those who like myself love the idea of a 500-800 square foot home in an open field that is environmentally sound but also simple and minimalist this is a great book.
Taster.......2007-03-14
I enjoyed the wide variety of projects presented. I'm a visual person, so thought there could have been more photos per home to orientate oneself with the accompanying floor plans.
Overall, I return to this book (amongst others of its genre in my collection) because of the celebration of small project design.
This is not for those who dislike modern, minimilistic elevations.
save your money.......2006-06-28
Empty square boxes; cold and modern. The flat roofs would never work in the northern climate.
Makes Me Want to Go Build a New House.......2006-03-25
I review a lot of architecture books, and this one more than most makes me want to go out and build a new house. The subject of the book is small houses. It consists of pictures and the story of some fifty houses, all of which are less than 1,300 square feet. Many of them are much less than 1,300 feet, indeed down into the 300-400 square foot size.
I live in a small house -- 900 square feet or so -- that's about a hundred years old. But compared to the layout, the beauty the simplicity of design, mine's a dump. I'm getting the urge to go visit a realtor friend. One thing about these houses is that many of them are on what would be considered hard to build on lots. And such lots tend to be cheap. There's a new architect in town that's fresh out of school and may have more originality than the older guys. Maybe if I give her this book, with a few houses marked. Hmmmmm!
One thing I didn't like, most of the bed rooms are on the second floor. I was in a house once that had a fire. The amount of smoke generated in just a minute or two was incredible. I don't want a bed room upstairs, if necessary I want to be able to close the door to keep the smoke out and get out through a wondow or emergency door.
Other than that, this is a great idea book. The pictures are beautiful. There's not as much detail as I would like, but adding detail would have to mean either fewer houses or bigger book, so I guess it's a nice balance.
Quite good.......2006-03-24
This is a quite good book dealing with compact houses. I'm not totally satisfied because some of the houses represented are more an architectural exercise than houses in which living. However really good photos, nice ideas and a good rating from the quality-cost point of view.
