4 out of 5 stars Really good.......2007-06-26

Lookin for luv was my first carl weber book, and now i am a fan.
The thing about this book is it has "you dont see it coming" parts.
It was well written and a fun read.

5 out of 5 stars Carl Weber is great..........2007-04-14

This was the first of MANY weber reads. This is a good read and good book. If you have not had the chance to check him out. Please do. You will not disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-04-09

After reading Baby Momma Drama and So You Call Yourself A Man, I fell in love with Carl Weber's enaging and entertaining style of writing. However, this book was pretty diappointing. I found the plot good at first but towards the end it seemed as if Weber was racing a deadline and just wrote whatever came to mind. Actually it semes as if he may have even been watching some twisted fairy tale becuase the ending didn't at all seem realistic. I would recommend that anyone interested in reading something by Carl Weber choose one of the books I earlier mentioned and altogether avoid this one blemish on his otherwise impeccable record.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-09-02

This was a good book from beginning to end.
Carl Weber does it again.

5 out of 5 stars First book I read by Carl.......2006-07-11

      Book Description

Enforcing law and order in the Ozarks just got tougher for Arly Hanks: chaperoning the church youth group, she must keep ten hormonally-challenged teens in line on a retreat to Camp Pearly Gates. It's a hellish assignment sure to have Arly and her fellow travelers -- Mrs. Jim Bob Buchanon, the mayor's wife; the high school shop teacher; and preacher Brother Verber -- praying for strength. But adolescent angst soon turns to shocking revelation when the body of a white-robed woman turns up on the campgrounds. She belonged to the quirky cult Daughters of the Moon -- and now Arly, fishing for clues with a handsome angler named Jacko, must walk a narrow path to snare a killer who works in mysterious ways....

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not Her Best work.......2005-01-25

when ever Hanks and Co. leave Maggody (ie Moonbean or Maggody in New York) the stories generally are not as fun to read. This is no exception. Stick with the Maggody based works they are much more enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific book, I read it in one day!.......2004-07-16

I loved this book so much I read it in one day! The many characters in Maggody are just that characters. It is a small town in Arkansas where Arly Hanks is the Police Chief. She has her hands full in this book as she is roped into being a chaperone for the church youth group. They are going to Camp Pearly Gates to do some volunteer work to built bleachers. Mrs. Jim Bob Buchanon, the mayor's wife, and Brother Verber, the local preacher, would make it interesting enough, but then she also has the high school shop teacher and ten teens to keep in line.

When the body of a white-robed woman turns up on the campgrounds, life gets even more complicated for Arly. Then there's the man she found fishing on the campgrounds. Not to mention all the reported sightings of ghosts. Once her mother Ruby Bee and her best friend Estelle show up, things get even more interesting.

Ruby Bee runs Ruby Bee's Bar & Grill. Due to a recent fire in the kitchen, she is out of business for a couple weeks. So she brings all her food up to the camp to feed the kids. They are happy because the menus that Mrs. Jim Bob had prepared were nutritional but not what the kids would want to eat!

As Arly begins investigating the apparent murder, she uncovers a community of women and children living on the campgrounds but that has a lot of mystery as to who they are and where they came from.

All the different characters plays such an important role in this book. It is told from multiple points of view, which at first I found difficult to follow. Once I got to know the various characters, I found that this story couldn't be told from one point of view. It is very well written!

      I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Murder at the Pearly Gates.......2004-01-28

Sometimes it is hard to keep a long running series feeling fresh and fun, but Joan Hess manages to bring a bit of revitalization to her Maggody series by sending Police Chief Arley Hanks off with some hormone laden teens, the good Brother and Mrs. Jim Bob to Camp Pearly Gates.

While Arley tries to ride herd on the cosmetic mad girls' bodies, Mrs. Jim Bob works on their souls and the good Brother works on a bottle of sacramental wine.

Meanwhile back in Maggody, Mr. Jim Bob is enjoying his new found freedom with some friends he has made over the internet.

Then one of the girls at Camp Pearly Gates stumbles over a body of a local cult member and things begin to get complicated, as Arley says.

A fun romp in the woods with the Maggody crew. Actually I have to note that the description of Camp Pearly Gates raised certain childhood memories of church camp-- laced with the scent of mildewed towels and sweaty sneakers.

4 out of 5 stars Getting more high falutin'.......2003-01-21

I have always come to the Maggody stories for light entertainment rather than edification. The jokes were often corny and the characterization crude but the mixture worked. In this one there are a number of highbrow references and Brother Verber reveals a childhood trauma that may account for his character flaws. Even the relatioship between Raz and Marjory is getting more psychologically complex. Where is all this leading? I'll keep reading to find out.

5 out of 5 stars MAGGODY AND THE MOONBEAMS SHINES!.......2002-09-10

Every time I take a fictional visit to the rural Arkansas town of Maggody (population 775 who all seem to be Buchanons of some sort or other with yet another one on the way), I always look at the publisher's line on the bottom of the title page ... Simon & Schuster with its list of offices in New York, London, Toronto, Sydney and Singapore. It completely mystifies me trying to imagine what readers in Singapore think about the criminal justice system in Maggody.

Anyway, this trip into the world of high crime and comedy starts with Ruby Bee Hanks burning up the kitchen of Ruby Bee's Bar and Grill. Add Duluth Buchanon's wife running off with his children and Raz Buchanon searching for a live-in companion for his pig Marjorie. And last, but not least, Arly getting shanghaied into being a chaperone to a church group of ten out of control teens (Billy Dick, Big Mac, Darla Jean et al), who are supposed to spend a week rebuilding Camp Pearly Gates under the unfortunate guidance of Mrs. Jim Bob Buchanon (the mayor's wife) and Brother Verber (the town's preacher).

Once at Camp Pearly gates, everyone one starts seeing what they think are angels, ghosts and/or aliens, and Darla Jean trips over a dead body in the woods on a dark and stormy afternoon.

If you thought the folks in Maggody were whacko, wait until you meet the people who live around Camp Pearly Gates. As always, Joan Hess delivers up a funny and enjoyable read. (Even if I can't keep track of all the Buchanons!)

            4 out of 5 stars What a spectacle!.......2004-07-30

The story has some outrageous twists and turns, but when you've got a plot that intertwines the lives of the gods with a race of vampires called "The Dark Ones," you know from the beginning you're in for a long, out of this world, ride. Jason Fury has written some interesting books. In factv no two of his books are the same, and no matter what pseudonym he uses, I have found that he has an incomparable imagination and a true enthusiast's knowledge of American and world history. Just the right balance of research and intuition propels his stories from one wild romp to another.

Don't let the title fool you, "Screams of Pan" isn't an especially punk book. It's more like a modern version of the old 20s and 30s classic by Thorne Smith, with more explicit gay sex added. Go for it!

            1 out of 5 stars Tedious.......2002-09-06

There was about a 100 page book buried in the 382 pages the author took to finish it.There was nothing even remotely erotic or humorous about the repetitive, redundant desciptions of the genitalia of the masculine characters that appeared about every third page . So BORING ,if it were a movie I would have walked out.

5 out of 5 stars Great, Fun, Outrageous Read!.......2001-10-23

This is a great, fast-paced read about vampires and werewolves and Roman gods--all living in the 21st Century. Jason Fury does a fabulous job of creating a gallery of bigger-than-life characters, especially the fabulous Johnny America, the lust object of the supernatural world. Christina Tremont is queen of the supernatural world in Manhattan. Together, they're dynamite as they fight the evil Dark Ones, a sect of monstrous vampires. Couldn't put this one down!

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Sexy and Funny!.......2001-10-18

This is a wild ride! A vampire in l898 becomes pregnant by her werewolf boyfriend. She nearly dies in childbirth but the Great God Pan blesses the infant and she grows up to be the fabulous Christina Tremont of Manhattan. It's now 2002. She's queen of the supernatural underworld. She falls in love with the incredible Johnny America--a powerful, Hercules whose sex drive is truly heroic. He's lusted after by a monstrous sect of vampires. Could he also be the actual son of Atlas? Great fun! Hysterically funny, too. Can't put it down. Jason Fury's best yet!

            5 out of 5 stars Almost Didn't Buy This Book...Thank Goodness I Did!.......2007-03-16

This book has been the most inspiring and enlightening book I've read in regard to parenting since I had my second child. This review inspires a parent to look at a child in a whole new way. Since I've read this I now see that my daughter who is an "observer" doesn't have to be in the middle of it all. I am now actively seeking programs that work for her personality traits. The reason I almost didn't buy this book is because of the Amazon review that intimated that this was solely based from a man's perspective. That couldn't be farther from the truth. This book is total inspiration from "living legends" in the world. The message is unisex and solid. I loved it...I'm waiting for the next book with more stories from individuals who have achieved. This book is so worth it.

1 out of 5 stars MEN that think outside the box.......2007-02-10

This is a collection of stories primarily written by men. Of thirty or so stories, four were stories by women- 2 athletes, 2 artists: No women leaders or scientists. Pitiful. Some stories are interesting, some one note. Take this book out of the library to check out some of the stories, and review the reference section in the back which talks about different programs for children - camps, etc. - by interest. I wish I hadn't been responsible for cutting down a tree to print the copy I bought on Amazon. Waste of resources.

5 out of 5 stars Special Book, Solid Message...Really Thought It Was Worth the Money.......2006-05-09

How often do we and did we all feel that we were out of the loop where popularity and the "in" crowd is concerned. Well this book tells us as well as kids that the most talented individuals began with the same awkward feelings. I felt that this book sends out a message to parents, teachers and kids who just don't get the fact that all kids are special and the kid that you might consider a nerd today...can be a world innovator as an adult. Buy it ...it was worth it.

5 out of 5 stars We Read It ...We Loved It....We Passed It Along...Inspiring!.......2006-03-08

This book is a book that I actually purchased when I was researching the founding fathers of the Internet, and I came accross this book because Vint Cerf (one of the founders) contributed his story to this book.

Each story was contributed by someone who has succeeded in a different area. You have an academy award winning cinematographer, the first woman who crossed the Atlantic in a rowboat, a Nobel Prize Winner who discovered the hole in the Ozone Layer of our planet and then the famous participants...Paul McCartney, Mayor Bloomberg, Spike Lee etc. I loved the book for all the contributions. It said to my child that first of all no matter how you start out, you can achieve your goals. The moral is just stick to your guns and who you are. What I loved about this book is the celebration of a MOM embracing her son's individuality...I do that every day. Parents...it a quick read and a valuable one.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent...Significantly Wonderful and Encouraging!.......2005-12-31

Finally Christmas is over and I've had some time to read a bit. This book has been sitting on my desk since October and I just got to it. It was fabulous... I'm past the age of raising kids, but the cover was engaging so I was drawn to it. This book has the right message. Paul McCartney, Spike Lee and Mayor Bloomberg are the famous contributors to this book, but it's the rest of the contributions from "those who have achieved" that meant something to me.

This book talks about the importance of letting a child become themselves so they can be the best they can be within society. It was fresh and poignant. I loved it. If you are into inspiration then this would work for you.

Because I hate planning dinners, I thought this cookbook would be helpful. It offers five nights of entrees and sides and includes recipes and grocery lists. At first I thought I had hit the jackpot. However, after using it for several weeks I would recommend that you skip this one. The layout is great, but if you don't like all of the recipes, or if some of the important veggies are out of season or unavailable, then the cookbook cannot be used as intended. There are a few wonderful recipes, but they lie amid some that would be best skipped. Each page includes personal tales about the author's children, their friends, and sporting events. The narratives are a bit trite and don't add much to the book other than filler. I would have prefered kitchen organizational tips or time savers. Bottom line: keep looking. This cookbook really isn't all that revolutionary. I give it "2" stars.

4 out of 5 stars Makes dinner intersting again.......2004-01-08

I've had this book for a few months now and have made almost everything in the book a few times. The best part is taking the list to the store putting it away and then when dinner time rolls around going to the book to see what is for dinner and knowing everything you need is already in the house. I hate deciding what to eat and this makes the choice for me. The food is great, my husband loves it, and even our 2 1/2 year old eats it.

I've given three as gifts to my other busy working mom friends!

5 out of 5 stars The answer to "What will I make for dinner?".......2004-01-04

I am far from an accomplished cook, but with this book my family thinks I'm a chef! The recipes are easy, with step by step instructions that even ensure that everything for the meal is done at the same time. The meals are healthy, taste really good and provide for variety. This by itself would be great, but what makes this book really spectacular is that it is a meal planning system complete with grocery lists. Now not only do you know what you will be having for dinner, you also know that you have all the ingredients needed from your one and only trip to the grocery store that week. This is the answer I have been looking for!

I gave this both 3 stars because while it is laid out well, it doesn't suit my family's style of eating. The "system" it employs is probably already used by many homemakers. Don't expect anything outstanding despite the "revolutionary" title. It is simply planning dinners ahead, taking the recipes to find the quantities needed, making your shopping list from there, and keeping copies of them, so they can be reused. A common sense approach.

The book heavily favors pasta combinations with some potato, rice and breads. Don't expect much brown rice, barley, millet, or other whole grains here. Of the meats, chicken features the most. There are no vegetarian entrees, and no nutritional information or exchanges. There is a rough proportional break down, but since they more or less follow a 30% protein, 40% carbs, 30% fat scheme, I didn't find it suitable for our eating style. We don't do high protein diets and we have vegetarians in the family. It would have been nicer in a binder style format so after you started making up your own menus you could add them to the ones already in the book so you could have them all in one place.

For those who DO follow a rough 30-40-30 scheme, there is good news: The side of the book has marks so you can quickly turn to any week's menu plans. There are tear-out grocery sheet checklists in the back of the book if you follow the menus exactly. The recipes themselves appear tasty, but since I returned my copy I can't say for sure how they'd turn out. With 8 weeks of dinner menus, it could save you some time and hassles if these menus do suit your style. There is a small dessert chapter for treats. There are charts in back for you to Xerox in making up your own menus. The homey sidebars provide tidbit info in a sort of fun way. The bottom margins are roomy enough for some notes, and there are several lined pages in back for expanded notes.

Basically, the book's usefulness will largely depend on your current eating habits more than the layout. The layout was actually one of the better ones I've seen. Those looking for more "menu oriented" cookbooks might want to look at the "Month of Meals" series by the American Diabetes Association even if you are not diabetic. The "mix and match" layout might be more useful even if it does not provide custom grocery lists like this one does. For the vegetarians, the _Month of Meals: Vegetarian Pleasures_ edition would be particularly helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful, convenient way to plan your week.......2001-01-23

My wife purchased the first version of this book direct from the author and liked the concept (and the recipes) so much that she bought this version too. We recommend this book for anyone who is familier with the daily mantra of making last minute decisions along the lines of "What should I buy at the store tonight?"

She has used this both for weekly planning as well as the occasional one-off recipe. The weekly planner is a neat idea; just take the whole book to the store and get your whole week's worth of groceries. She was looking for a way to simplify our life yet add variety to our menu and this fit the bill. (Note: she has taken this convenience a step further and saved even more time by simply ordering her week's groceries from HomeGrocer.com -- now WebVan.) We've found the book to be straightforward in its approach to recipes. We haven't run into some of the issues that others have reported but we're sort of flexible in our approach towards cooking anyway.

This encyclopedia describes and prices almost 12,000 items produced by 150 American potteries. 3 out of 5 stars Not an old book, but out of date.......2006-03-28

Nancy Zieman is a Baby Lock dealer, so this book is heavily slanted in that direction. If you have a Baby Lock, it might be very useful. It is full of very pretty pictures, but not all that much useful information. We beginners need a book that is not an advertisement for a certain kind of machine. What is really needed is a "Machine Embroidery for Dummies" type book since the introduction of the Singer Futura and Quantum Futura machines which run off your computer have made it possible for so many more of us to afford embroidery machines. It's a whole new ballgame, and there are going to be a whole lot more players than ever before! Save your money and keep looking for a book with more substance.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book "Ever".......2006-03-22

I have purchased many machine embroidery books. This one by far is the best in every way. This is a must have for every machine embroidery person. Nancy Zieman did a great job on this one.

            Book Description

Combining her love of gardens and landscapes with her skills as an artist and a machine embroiderer, Alison Holt shows you how to create exquisite flower pictures using your sewing machine. Alison's interpretations of what she sees in nature are so detailed that many people at first mistake her embroideries for paintings or even photographs. Alison's technique is to use her sewing machine like a paintbrush to apply threads in a myriad of different colours on to a canvas of hand-painted silk. She uses two basic stitches - straight stitch and zigzag stitch - to make fine and broad 'brushstrokes', blending both to achieve stunning results. This comprehensive and colourful book covers everything from composing a picture and setting up the machine to choosing threads and silk paints and creating different effects in stitch. Each of the three step-by-step projects allow you to put all you have learnt into practice to make a stunningly effective embroidered picture, and will inspire you to transform what you see around you into your own, unique designs.

Have just received this beautiful book and it appears to be a winner. My husband even picked it up and looked through with great admiration for the artistry. Topics cover beginning to end of a project, some sections being: materials & equipment, design, colour, distance and detail, starting to stitch, grouping by technique, how to present your finished embroidery. Definitely encouraging and inspirational. I think this is one that will be sold out!

I think the techniques and descriptions are good. The author is truly knowledgeable about the subject. Beautiful work. I found the flat color of the pictures somewhat distracting. If you are getting the book to read about the techniques, then it is good. I would love to see the same book updated and bolder color. I don't think the pictures do the work justice.

            1 out of 5 stars A deceptive title.......2004-12-29

Pam Watts has chosen an inappropriate title for this book. In no way is this a beginner's guide to anything. One would have to be an expert sewer with an elaborate machine and many years of sewing and quilting experience to benefit from this book. There is no mention of hooping or stabilizing fabrics. These are techniques that beginner's need to know. Beginners do not use silks and satins and fancy ribbons for a project. I am very disappointed and I wish a more appropriate title had been chosen for the book. If you are experienced in machine embroidery and want to paint pictures with threads and fabric, this book is for you. But it is not a guide for a beginner.

5 out of 5 stars A great way to interest a budding young illustrator........1999-05-23

In his own words, my 7 year old "LOVES drawing cartoons. I tried to draw before I got the kit but I love to do it all the time now that I have the kit. It's the bestest book I ever had." His illustrations are detailed and professional, and he has the confidence to draw on his own and create new stories.

                  Book Description

Moviegoers often assume Frank Capra's life resembled his beloved films: as in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington or It's a Wonderful Life, a man of the people faces tremendous odds and, by doing the right thing, triumphs. But as Joseph McBride reveals in this meticulously researched, definitive biography, the reality was far more complex, a true American tragedy. Using newly declassified U.S. government documents about Capra's response to being considered a "subversive" during the post-World War II Red Scare, McBride adds a final chapter to his unforgettable portrait of the man who gave us It Happened One Night, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, and Meet John Doe.

2 out of 5 stars Lots of research, questionable conclusions.......2006-12-13

Joseph McBride's biography of Frank Capra is good in the sense that he amassed painstaking research and shares a fair amount of it in this extensive tome. We can thank him for all of his hard work piecing together factual material surrounding the fullness of Capra's life.

He provides us just enough source material to clue us in that his conclusions about Capra are highly suspect. While I'm sure there is a darker side to Capra that is well documented here, the Frank Capra presented in this book remains to me a strange cardboard construct that McBride uses to argue some dubious points about filmmaking and politics.

His critique of Capra's films, which is one instance where we are on equal footing with the author in terms of source material, often come across as frustratingly uninsightful, even narrow-minded. The lack of insight is truly perplexing when surrounded by evidence that McBride spent thousands of hours analyzing Capra's life and work. In terms of Capra's films and their enduring appeal with millions of moviegoers, McBride to me in places comes across as dismissive, even slightly insulting to Capra and those who find worth in his works. I don't know if McBride intended to come off this way, but judging from other reviewers I'm not alone in my dismay.

Instead of presenting Capra as an enormously complex person who somehow managed to harness his strengths, hopes, fears, loves, and hatreds into vibrant, challenging cinema, McBride often paints Capra as small-minded and relying on the talents of others to succeed. McBride's views simply don't line up with the unparalleled body of work Capra has left us. This book feels like one of those tomes that tries to inform us how Shakespeare really couldn't have written all of those remarkable plays.

Many people consider It's a Wonderful Life to be one of the greatest films ever made, but McBride's coverage of it would lead you to believe it is the product of Capra's "anachronistic, and by then reactionary, thought pattern," an exposure of "how utterly distrustful Capra had become of the American public." McBride leaves more or less the last word on the film to William S. Pechter, who "noted that the supernatural resolution of Wonderful Life exposes the 'fatal weakness' of Capra's work... 'for those who can accept the realities of George Bailey's situation...and do not believe in angels...the film ends, in effect with the hero's suicide'...the film is a "dead end" for Capra.

It appears the fatal weakness is in McBride's and Pechter's inability to appreciate the soaring triumph and powerful lasting impact of this remarkable film, still touching and challenging people 60 years after its creation. If it was an ending to Capra's career, I can only suggest it was because he took filmic storytelling to a height no one has since matched. Where could he go from there? To my mind, *no one* has answered that film with a more powerful or compelling entertainment.

It's a frustration when a talented researcher takes over a biography with zeal and attention to detail but seems so unaware of many aspects of the subject's brilliance. Such is the case with The Catastrophe of Success. McBride is a smart research whiz who appears to be off the wavelength of what to my mind makes his subject so amazing.

To McBride, Frank Capra is in some form a model of human failure. While this must have been depressing to the author, who spent a remarkable seven years on this project, I have to respond by saying Capra was not a catastrophe, but an imperfect person like us all who still managed through his art to bravely push the boundaries of his own sense of idealism. In the process Capra made some remarkable films that continue to touch and challenge many, many people even today.

I hope that perhaps one day McBride will be able to open up his research archives to another biographer who has a different understanding and appreciation of Capra's works and can provide areas of insight that are lacking in this book.

1 out of 5 stars SAD HATCHET JOB.......2006-05-21

after about more than halfway through this book (I'm not finished yet, but not sure if I want to), I don't know who I feel more pity for...Frank Capra or the "biographer" McBride

although Frank Capra may not be the perfect man (who is?) McBride's disdain for his subject emanates from every page. was it Capra's politics McBride didn't like as some other reviewers have stated?

whatever axe the author McBride wanted to grind in regards to his subject, he swung away and has left some painful and vicious marks...I think the bordering on hatred the author has for Frank Capra says more about the author than his subject...I should've known the road this "biography" was going to take when one of the anecdotes McBride opens the book with is of an old Frank Capra suffering a particularly nasty bout of diarhea while on a visit to Sicily

I'm all for debunking myths as much as the next wannabe intellectual, but McBride was on a quest to paint Capra as an egotistical, [...] ignoramus who somehow lucked into directing some of the finest motion pictures ever made...
an actual REPUBLICAN who believed in the American Ideal nonetheless...Philistines like that can NEVER make good movies...how dare he?

                  2 out of 5 stars A Biography from a Prosecuting Attorney.......2002-08-05

This was a disappointment. I don't like everything that Capra made ("Platinum Blonde" and "You Can't Take It With You" do nothing for me)but this book proved too much to take. It reads like a legal brief against Capra by a prosecuting attorney. Every action Capra undertakes is wrong. Every success Capra enjoys is really the work of someone else.

Shortly after reading "Catastrophe of Success," I read "Christmas in July" by Diane Jacobs, a biography of Preston Sturges. It was the difference between night and day. Jacobs seemed to enjoy her subject, and while she noted Sturges' personal failings, she didn't dwell on them or harp on them. Instead she focused on the films and why they worked (or didn't). If only McBride had done the same.

1 out of 5 stars Want revenge? Write a biography!.......2001-12-11

One gets the same feeling finishing Frank Capra's autobiography The Name Above the Title as one does finishing a Capra film: thrilled with the zigs and zags of life and optimistic about one's own future.

But following up The Name Above The Title with Catastrophe of Success is akin to washing down Thanksgiving dinner with a rotten-egg-and-sour-grape smoothie. McBride has tainted a seven year odyssey of painstakingly documented research (175 interviews! weeks with Capra's personal papers! archive searches! FOIA releases! federal declassifications!) with an animosity uncommon in academics, at once vilifying Capra and his father while portraying those who loved and associated with Capra as selfless victims of Capra's insecurities, inner torments, and anticommunist political convictions.

In reading McBride, one senses that behind it all, there exists an even better story than the one McBride has scratched out from the voluminous source material. Why did McBride seek to so vehemently deconstruct what he called "the Capra myth," and soil the dignity of Capra's image by using such tactics as only quoting those interview passages in which his subject used expletives, or subjectively interpreting Capra's blinks and nods in a This Is Your Life episode as queasy squirming in the face of some underlying "irony"?

Was it because Capra declined to direct a made-for-TV sequel to It's A Wonderful Life, one which McBride hints he may have been involved in on page 644 of the paperback edition? Did Capra at one point step on McBride's toes as had done with so many insufferable fools?

McBride's perseverant scholarship is self-evident, yet his shamefully slanted execution degrades the whole presentation, making the book unreadable except to Capra enemies and eternal sourpusses. Readers are advised to reserve a second helping of "legend" for after the egg-and-grape "truth" sauce.

1 out of 5 stars Biased Attack on Capra.......2000-12-23

This book, though it does have much interesting detail, is essentially an attack on Frank Capra, with many dubious conclusions drawn, and is so unrelentingly negative and unfair that it at times borders on the ludicrous. The theory of the book is that Frank Capra was a pathlogical liar and unrelenting egotist, who used the talents of others to make his films and then tried to hog all the glory himself, culminating in his famous autobiography, "The Name Above the Title," which is a "self-aggrandizing fairy tale." Capra was essentially a front man for the brilliant work of screenwriter Robert Riskin, who is the main reason behind Capra's success. When you finish this book, however, you stop and say, "How did this pathetic fraud produce such a staggering array of classic films, in such a distinctive style, and in such a variety of genres (comedy, drama, documentary, and even educational films)?" None of McBride's conclusions makes the slightest bit of sense. One key flaw of the theory is that Capra's two greatest films, "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," were not written by Riskin. McBride attempts to answer this by saying that they "followed the Riskin formula," as if by watching a few Disney Classics we could each make one ourselves, simply by following the formula, as if any decent movie was ever made by a "formula." In actuality, the brilliant screenplay of "It's a Wonderful Life" bears little resemblance to anything written by Riskin, although Capra's directorial style is easily recognizable (his style is almost as easily identifiable as Hitchcock's). The fact that Capra made many great films without Riskin (The Strong Man, The Bitter Tea of General Yen, Arsenic and Old Lace, State of the Union, Why We Fight series, the Bell Science series, and the two classics mentioned above), while Riskin made none without Capra, though he was given the opportunity to direct his own material, should seem to be a telling blow.

If you read Capra's own book after reading this one, you will be surprised to discover no sense of rampaging ego, but the thoughts of a rather straightforward, idealistic, and often self-deprecating person. Capra did very little research for his own book, largely relying on his wife's scrapbooks and his own memory, and so there probably are some minor factual errors, but McBride jumps on every minute inconsistency, and if Capra says one thing and some obscure person says something contradictory, he immediately and annoyingly assumes Capra is lying and the other person is telling the truth.

As an example, Capra says in his book that he graduated high school a half year early. McBride pounces on this eagerly, and says that Capra graduated on time with his class. However, we learn that Capra graduated on January 27, and didn't start college until September, so it's very easy to see how he could remember that he graduated 6 months early when recalling the events 50 years later. Capra also then says he spent 6 months working at the Western Pipe and Steel Company to earn money for college. McBride pounces again, saying that Tony Capra claims that he was the one who worked there. Later McBride ruminates about "the mysterious missing 6 months" after Capra graduated High School and ponders what he could have done in that time. Gosh, could it be that Tony Capra is the one mistaken, and that Frank did work at the factory?-such a possibility would never occur to McBride.

McBride even somberly and absurdly quotes a certain Eugene Vale, who claims that he was the man who wrote most of "The Name of Above the Title" and that he "made" Capra, as if Capra's classic films don't speak for themselves. Capra's book is great because we get to hear Capra's own opinions on various aspects of his films, not because it's brilliantly written. We're all still awaiting with bated breath the next astonishing literary production from the great Eugene Vale.

It appears that McBride's animosity toward Capra is largely due to the fact that Capra was a Republican who believed in rugged individualism and conservative values, which seems to lead McBride to think that it was therefore impossible to care about his fellow man, and that surely there must be a liberal somewhere responsible for all these powerful films.

McBride claims he wrote the book because after World War II "no other Director had such a precipitous decline" as Capra. For the record, after World War II Capra made possibly the greatest movie of all time, an outstanding political comedy-drama, two mediocre remakes of his earlier films, an enjoyable musical comedy, a disappointing musical comedy, and 4 Educational films (Out Mr. Sun, etc.) that have been beloved by schoolkids everywhere for the past 45 years.

In conclusion, it's especially galling that shortly before his final, paralyzing stroke, the 87-year old Capra was gracious enough to grant McBride a number of interviews, and supply him with information (such as his military records), while McBride (no doubt acting as servile and ingratiating as possible) knew full well that he intended to do a vicious hatchet job on him the second he could no longer defend himself.
