Book Description
"Remarkable--. What sets
Lost Boys apart from the ordinary lament is the author's palpable sense of care and compassion."--The Washington Post Book World
In the past few years our national consciousness has been altered by haunting images of mass slaughters in American high schools, carried out by troubled young boys with guns. It's now clear that no matter where we live or how hard we try as parents, our children are likely to be going to school with boys who are capable of getting guns and pulling triggers. What has caused teen violence to spread from the urban war-zones of large cities right into the country's heartland? And what can we do to stop this terrifying trend?
James Garbarino, Ph.D., Cornell University professor and nationally noted psychologist, insists that there are things that we, both as individuals and as a society, can do. In a richly anecdotal style he outlines warning signs that parents and teachers can recognize, and suggests steps that can be taken to turn angry and unhappy boys away from violent action. Full of insight, vivid individual portraits, practical advice and considered hope, this is one of the most important and original books ever written about boys.
Download Description
It seems children are more violent and angry than ever before. Does our society make it difficult for them to stay out of trouble? Are neglectful, abusive, absent parents to blame? Does easy access to guns actually drive boys to violence? Faced with school-based shootings in communities as diverse as rural Jonesboro, Arkansas, and suburban Springfield, Oregon, people are waking up to the truth -- the current explosion of gratuitous homicidal violence is neither an anomaly nor about other people's children. It is nothing less than a wave of epidemic violence among our youth. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. James Garbarino presents stunning new insights into the growing number of boys who kill. Drawing on twenty-five years of work with children and families, he shows that no matter where we live or how good we are as parents, chances are our children are going to school with troubled boys capable of getting guns and pulling the triggers.

Some information unconscionably misrepresented.......2006-09-06
I worked as a documentary producer for some time in the 90's and came to have some first-hand knowledge of one of the cases James Garbarino discusses in this book, that of Shareef Cousin, a New Orleans teen who was once the youngest person ever to be on death row in the US.
Garbarino presents Cousin as a prime example of how a child can fall into a life of violence and murder for lack of a father figure. Problem: Shareef Cousin was not violent and did not murder anyone. His case is one of the most famous US cases of a totally innocent person, in this case a child, landing up on death row. Cousin was actually on several home videotapes taken at the time of the crime playing in a basketball game at a distant community center. Authorities were well aware of this evidence at the time of his trial but suppressed the information, and, in the meantime, coerced Cousin into confessing to a robbery he also couldn't have committed in order to keep him in prison after he was taken off death row. (He's out now, all charges dropped and convictions overturned, and he's a fine, upstanding citizen.). His story is not one of a fatherless boy falling into a life of crime, but of racism and corruption in the New Orleans DA'S office.
If you use the Amazon search feature to view Garbarino's references to Cousin's case in this book, you'll see he gives the impression he interviewed Cousin at length to get all sorts of insight into how his childhood circumstances made him a murderer. He even intimates that Shareef more or less admitted guilt. This is sheer rubbish. From day one, Cousin, his wonderfully supportive family, and numerous witnesses proclaimed his innocence to anyone and everyone who would listen. And by the time this book was published, his murder conviction was being overturned and he was well on his way to being cleared of the sham robbery charges. I find it hard to believe Garbarino was unaware of Sharif's innocence when he wrote this section of the book. But he needed Cousin to be guilty, being the picture-perfect fatherless black kid and all, in order to support his shallow, pop-psychological theories on boys and violence, so he completely misrepresented this child and his situation.
Such a lack of respect for people and for the truth makes all the other anecdotes and "data" in this book highly suspect. What a shame because this is such an important topic that really needs to be addressed by an author of intellectual and personal integrity. -- If Garbarino is their only advocate, the Lost Boys will most likely remain lost.
Nothing new or enlightening.......2004-07-23
You'll find nothing new in this book; social cues, abuse, cycle of violence, shame, role models, etc. Perhaps it was new news in 1999, but no longer. The author's brain seems to connect items which have nothing to do with each other, and in a judgmental way. See page 151, he makes a severe and inappropriate judgment of a person's reaction to imminent death, and attempts to make an outrageous connection to "being in touch with your soul." Don't waste your money. I'm sure you can find it in a local library and peruse it, but I doubt you'll get much out if it. Unless you're a sheltered Psych 101 student who has never watched the news.
Really good!.......2004-05-27
This book is great,it does not only inform you but it also makes you think. I have thought of how I've treated people and how hopefully I have not hurt anyone because I know that it might affect someone in the long run. I just hope more people would read this book and learn how important it is to not only hear about your childs day, but actually listen. Sometimes your own kid might have problems at school but you're too busy to pay attention, and when the school calls you to tell you your child has been "bad" you immediately start to think of punishments when you should start thinking of why they were "bad" and if there is anything you can do to help them.
Mixed Messages With Some Good Content.......2002-07-15
James Garbarino does an excellent job of understanding youth violence and putting it into its historical and social contexts. However, he works so hard to understand the origins of youth violence that he buys everything these sociopaths sell. He struggles to hold on to his objectivity and not be won over to the dark side, but the book ends up being a criminal defense lawyer's dream-come-true. Garbarino explains to the point of excusing the violence, then keeps backtracking to find his own, and society's, values regarding violence. This book is informative and useful, but have plenty of grains of salt on hand, and be careful and critical, while reading it. Despite all my reservations, I do recommend this to professionals who can put it into proper perspective and be (more) objective (than the author), or to anyone who is willing to read this book as part of a package that, overall, will give the reader a more rounded view of the subject matter.
solid research.......2002-07-01
The ability to get behind the eyes of troubled kids and see the world from their perspective is invaluable for anyone struggling to understand why kids find themselves in such situations. Dr Garbarino's book also validates the social programs created by schools to encourage the inclusion of everyone. I am already seeing a resurgence of school based student assistance programs and support group activities. Thanks for your meticulous effort. "Meticulous" is the right word, as these kids are not easy to reach. They have been socially "walled out" for so long that they have learned not to trust anyone. Anyone (parent, school staff or another student) who tries to connect will find that their communication structure takes alot of "wait time" and patience - just to make sense of what is being said. It is worth the wait.
Book Description
Once it was a swamp. Now Foggy Bottom is swimming with real-estate sharks. When a man is found stabbed to death in this trendy D.C. neighborhood, it is major news. But within forty-eight hours the nation is gripped by a fear that leaves this comparatively small crime in the dark.
Three passenger planes are shot out of the sky. Everywhere–in law enforcement, in the media, and in the most secret realms of government–men and women scramble to find out who shot hand-held missiles at the planes, and why. It is a search that reaches from Moscow to the Pacific Northwest, putting some people’s lives in jeopardy and turning others lives inside out. But no one can guess the truth: that the epicenter of the terrorist outbreak is Washington D.C. . . . and a dead man behind a park bench in a place called Foggy Bottom.

After 9/11.......2007-01-23
Murder in the park across from the Lombard Hotel seems to be a case of a Canadian victim. Joe Potamos is a reporter for the WASHINGTON POST and Peter Langruth is a police officer. Max Pauling, divorced father, pilot of a small aircraft, CIA, has been relegated to filling a desk job unhappily. A small commercial airliner traveling from Westchester County, NY to Washington DC crashes. Pauling's boss wants him at work right away. Another commuter flight crashes near Boise. A third accident happens in San Jose.
The murdered man is identified as Jeremy Wilcox. He is attached to the Canadian Embassy, a trade specialist. In New York and California witnesses come forward, having seen missiles down the planes. CNN gets the nuews about the missile sightings. Max Pauling is ordered to go to Moscow.
In the past Potamus covered the State Department. He was demoted to general assignment reporter after punching a columnist. Diplomatic niceties are no longer part of his world. Languth, the police officer, and Potamus both mistrust people. Pauling, in Russia, tries to buy information. It seems the missiles came through a group in Plattsburgh via Canada. Max is sent to Langley, the Puzzle Palace, when he delivers unwelcome news.
As events unspool, the reader is carried along to the exciting end.
as always she remains the best mystery writer........2002-11-21
another great book by Margaret Truman. The beginning was a bang and the ending a climax.
Terrorists and Mass Murder of Airline Passengers.......2002-10-30
Margaret Truman's mysteries are always fun to read. They are low-key, have a minimum of gory details, and have twists to keep things interesting. This time, we have the murder of a Canadian diplomat and destruction of three commuter planes in flight, killing passengers and crew. We watch the investigation of the crimes through the eyes of a Washington Post reporter, a CIA operative, and several FBI agents. Simultaneous destruction of three planes points to terrorists, but which terrorists? When the CIA man and the reporter find the answer, the story shifts into high gear during the last 100 pages for a breathtaking ending. All in all, it's an enjoyable book for relaxation.
Interesting forewarning.......2002-04-27
In the aftermath of the September 11th tragedy, it is eerie that the same number of planes suffers similar disasters. This book is a little below par of her other books. The absence (in a crime-solving capacity) of Mac and Annabel Smith left a void in the story. The other characters were predictable and not well developed. In all, it was a good story that needed more work on the characters.
Typical Truman, but eerily prescient.......2002-04-26
If you like Margaret Truman's other "Murder ... " books, you'll like this one. If you don't, you won't.
The relatively predictable characters and writing are familiar here. The only twist is that this book is about terrorists shooting passenger planes out of the sky, which gives the reader an odd feeling after 9/11.
Truman's books are great if you're looking for something to take to the beach or read on a weekend. They're easily read and the plots are interesting enough to make them page-turners.
If you're looking for serious fiction, you'll be disappointed. But my recommendation is to enjoy Truman's books for what they are -- fun novels for when you're in the mood for a quick read.

Couldn't read this trash.......2007-09-18
Honestly, I tried to read this about 4 times. I could not.
Characters: Hateful, endlessly bickering.
Setting: Bleak, arid wasteland.
Story: Pointless, confused.
Writing style: Amateurish, adolescent.
1 star for decent cover art.
Good read.......1999-02-01
I hadn't read the previous book in the set but after reading this one it makes me want to find it. The characters (especially Sandy) have that gritty quality that makes them seem more real. They're not all smiles and love. The way that the author includes a bit of future history at the end (Aku the Great, etc. et al) and leaves Sandy out of it was an interesting twist. Just goes to show no matter how much you do, if you're not a favorite with the higher ups you don't get any credit. If the first is anything like this one then I'm sure to like it.
Not bad, but not as good as a Name to Conjure With.......1998-11-06
Continuing adventures of a new gang of four. Poor editing makes for a somewhat disjointed read. Sets up a third book.

Truly excellent book I keep handy.......2006-11-23
I bought this book initially because I was adopting foster children and I wanted to help them with their loss issues. But then as I read it, I realized it applies to helping any child who has to face significant losses. I wish my brother had this book when he got divorced, maybe he could have understood and helped his children when their schoolwork plummetted and they became depressed. It helps you understand about childhood grief and how to aid the child in coping with it. I have referred to it many times and bought copies for my friends, too.
A Classic.......2003-05-16
This book is often recommended for people adopting older children. However, it is a beautifully written book, and easy to read. It has information on how to help children with all sorts of changes, permanent (like a death), and temporary, like a parent going overseas for the military. The book helps adults understand what is going on for the child, and how to help them better with their sadness, anager and aggression.

Classic Recipes.......2005-03-10
Despite the earlier glowing user reviews of this book, I was was so surprised at how great it really is. I obviously don't know what a "Junior Forum" is because I expected a low-budget presentation from some kind of Boy Scout group. These are classy, classic recipes from the upper crust of San Antonio society and also its finest restaurants. Yet all the ingredients are as simple as you would find in Rachel Rays's 30-minute dishes and are easily available to me up here in Michigan. Of course, cooking times vary, but I would consider most recipes very easy. Also, due to the city's rich cultural heritage, which is also nicely touched upon in the book, there are many favorites from the heart of Europe. As above, a great all-round cookbook.
VISIT SAN ANTONIO & BUY THIS BOOK!!! WORTH IT!!.......2004-05-28
I was born and raised in San Antonio, I moved to West Virginia, all my new friends come over and want Tex-Mex cooking, I show them this book, and they have ordered it. Everything in this book is "SAN ANTONIO" and the pictures remind me of HOME!
Very Good Recipes in this Book!.......2004-02-18
There are some great receipes in this book. The one for the barbecue beef brikett is just outstanding! Other meat dishes including chops and such are also fabulous. A definite keeper for the cook book collection in my house.
Great food from my hometown.......2001-12-06
I grew up in San Antonio, so I can vouch that these simple recipes taste like home. The Tex-Mex recipes..green enchiladas, layered bean dip, picadillo, more exotic south-of-the-border soups, all shine, as do more all-American recipes for brownies, simple chicken dishes and vegetables. A great all-around cookbook with a South Texas accent..
An collection from outstanding Texas kitchens.......1998-12-04
Not the expected Tex-Mex. These recipes are from home kitchens taste tested by family and friends of these outstanding cooks. Easy to follow format with no "far-out" ingredients. Everything I've tried has been a winner! Gifts of this one to friends have resulted in repeated thanks.

Excellent Dollhouse & Advertising Book.......2007-03-09
As a member of a Dollhouse and Miniatures Club, this book on the advertising of early dollhouses, I find this book a MUST BUY for all collectors and other people seeking info on dollhouses and the styles that were out there for the public to buy. Again, as a collector, it is essential to have a book like this to use as a "guide", especially when so many houses and furniture of these periods are unknown and this also gives a glimpse into how these products were advertised to entise the public, especially children to buy these products. This book is yet another fantastic book by Dian Zillner to further eductate us in the past and present Dollhouse and Furniture collectables.

I didn't want to wait the 2-3 weeks to receive this, so I purchased it from one of the secondary sellers listed in the Amazon ad page and got a wonderful NEW book for under $20.00! Paging thru this fun nostalgic book is just like Christmas morning for any baby boomer who was a little girl waiting for Santa in the 1940's thru 1960's.....also has some 1970's dollhouses and furniture. What a wonderful find! You will love it!

A Wonderful Visual History.......2007-06-26
As well as great written history of liturgical art. I bought this for a friend, and instead kept it and ordered another one to be sent. As a liturgist and director of music, this is a MUST to have in your library.
Anyone inerested in the art of the Church would benefit from this book. The pictures are wonderfully clear, well detailed and a treasure of ideas and inspiration.

Good for churches ecspecially for catholic
Very inspirational and spiritual........1998-04-30
Every time I look at my copy, I find more to give thanks for. Our church has benefitted from the Banners and Quilts we have created, adapted from ideas we found in the book. My dream is to find it reprinted and get it for some friends. I have been fortunate enough to see the cover quilts at an Ecclesiastical exhibit and they are even more beautiful in person. This is a book that should be in everyone's library.
A compendium of Christian liturgical soft art........1998-03-14
The Patchwork Pilgrimage) by Jill Liddell is a compendium of Christian liturgical art, especially quilted banners, altar cloths, and vestments. Nearly every page has at least one color plate depicting a church decoration found in Scandinavia, England, France, the U.S., Canada, Australia, or New Zealand. Though most are contemporary (1980's and 90's), examples from as far back as the Middle Ages are also included.
Jill Liddell's descriptions of the individual pieces are supplemented by Andrew Liddell's historical overview of church art. The sections entitled "Ways and Means" and "Christian Signs and Symbols" offer suggestions for quilters who might like to try their hands at liturgical art. Christian quilters will benefit from having this inspiring book in their collections.

It show a way to combine your love of God and love of fabric/quilting/needlework. Book Description
The production of dimension-cut lumber and machine-made nails that made balloon frame construction possible by the 1830s sparked a revolution in housing construction in the heart of the nation, the frontier farmlands of the Upper Midwest.
Balloon frame construction gradually replaced traditional methods of building with wood because the new way proved to be more economical and efficient than the mortice and tenon box frame. Farmer-builders and carpenters also realized that balloon frame construction afforded a more flexible approach to planning a house. They could add units to an original structure and adapt interior spaces of the house to suit varying functions in ways impossible in the traditional ways of building with wood, brick, or stone. Building a balloon frame house offered a choice to build a house that appeared to preserve a traditional shape or to construct a dwelling that expressed individuality and some innovation. Assembled of lightweight wooden studs, joists, and rafters, supported by foundation and sill, and fastened together with nails, the balloon frame was like a tightly woven basket in which each component strengthened the other as a tight and secure envelope of space.
In Homes in the Heartland, art historian Fred Peterson chronicles the balloon frame construction revolution as it spread from Chicago into Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, and across South Dakota and North Dakota. Farmers and carpenters were slow to accept the new, lightweight means of construction, Peterson notes, but by the end of the century they judged a balloon frame house to be virtually the only kind of structure for a proper home. Today ninety percent of the farmhouses in the region are of balloon frame construction.
Through photographs, house plans, and text, Peterson examines not only the technical side of farmhouse construction, but the social, economic, and aesthetic aspects as well. He analyzes changes in kinds of farmhouses in a context of evolving values that defined homelife, success, and rural community and examines the roles of ethnicity and social class in choice of home environment.

Book Description

I loved this book. Loved reading about the integrity and hard work and perfectionism this artists brings to her music. Shakira's the real deal. We can all learn from this kind of dignity and sense of self. What a hero -- especially in this age of inflated egos and marketing hype.
Not the best but not that bad either..........2001-12-06
As a big Shakira fan I bought this book the minute I saw it. This book is fairly good. If you are a new Shakira fan, I reacommend it. It tells the story of how this Latin Pop/Rock Icon became the huge star she's today. It tells the struggles and problems she had to overcome for reaching her goals and dreams. If you have known Shakira for a while you'll have already herad almost they say here...
