4 stars.......2007-09-14
i like this book read it twice by accident. anyway i liked it and would recommend it, be careful guys you dont know what you got until its gone. you need to be patient.
Oh, gee... I really wanted to like this book!.......2007-03-19
I went against my better judgement and chose this book for our book club meeting without having read it first. Normally that is a qualification for choosing books - read them yourself first! The thing was, everyone in our group loves Michael Baisden. A few of us had heard him on the radio when we were lucky enough to live in areas that pick up his show. Some of us had been to his different national events and vacations, etc. I figured that this book choice would be a no brainer.
Unfortunately, it didn't turn out that way. Men Cry In The Dark is just really o-k-a-y. It wasn't anything stellar, and it ws really forgettable. I just expected more from such a talented radio personality, and this book left me cold. I really wouldn't recommend it unless you have nothing else to read and someone gives it to you free.
Sorry, Mike, I STILL LOVE YOU - and everyting is everyTING - but this book is NOT.
Easy Read.......2006-11-06
It's like an all male Waiting to Exhale... Wonderful book. I especially love the ending. All I'll say is that it's not your usual storybook ending.
Was missing something .......2006-07-24
Men cry in the dark was good but the ending could have been better, in the beginning of the book it had me interested kept me going but then it just lost my interest.
Really Really Good.......2006-06-24
Unlike many of the other reviewers I have no complaints - I loved this book. The storyline and the characters were great, mostly I loved the male point of view.
This book kept it very real - it shined light and truth on relationships between black americans young and old.
The story was a bout 4 best friends and the ladies they love/loved, it was interesting to watch how they all felt about and how they handled their relationships.

Book Description
From a writer whose novels have been acclaimed for their unflinching exploration of evil comes a brilliant collection of short stories—some never before published—that distill dread back down to its essence—and inject it straight into the reader's back brain. Andrew Vachss might have scissored his characters from today's headlines: a stalker prowling around an anonymous high-rise; a serial killer whose transgressions reflect a childhood of hideous abuse; an inner-city gunman who is willing to take out a blockful of victims in order to win a moment of acceptance.
Tautly written and endowed with murderous ironic spin,
Born Bad plunges us into the hell that lies just outside our bedroom windows.
Customer Reviews:
Vachss, Andrew Vachss.......2004-11-21
Oooh, I freakin' love this guy. I've read most of Vachss' books, but Born Bad was my introduction to him back in high school(thank you Mr. Piddington) and still remains one of my favorites. Like the title says, it's short stories here. Some are extremely short and play out like single scenes that could come from a kickazz action film. Vachss is not a razzle dazzle wordsmith like Clive Barker, but there's no need to be poetic here. He's more interested in getting down to the nitty gritty, and that's the way he writes. Vachss has knowledge of the things he writes about, he knows the criminal language and throws in enough classic one-liners for twenty Tarantino flicks. The first batch of stories are varying topics, the next batch follow a mercenary called Cross and his crew. Then we get some cool stories about a post-apocalyptic underground society, followed by more mixed topics. This book is a good introduction to Vachss. Most of his books are Burke novels, and you can start with that series if you want, but Born Bad is a great place to start to really get a good taste of Vachss' style. If you dig it, go ahead and try Burke, but if you can't get enough of Cross and the Underground, pick up Everybody Pays which is basically like Born Bad 2.
Streetwise horror stories.......2000-06-18
Andrew Vachss is a mystery writer whose work often times reads more like horror. Therefore, it is not surprising that his collection of short stories has the punch of classic short horror fiction. These are dark stroies dredged up from the depths of Vachss's fertile imagination. Usually, they deal with the worst impulses of man, especially the sexual predator. They are not for the faint of heart, but are powerful in their own way.
what's with the "ball peen hammer" references???.......1999-06-18
Is there something particularly painful about a ball peen hammer versus, say, a claw hammer? I don't work at Home Depot, but I'd guess that they'd probably do about the same amount of damage to one's head... although the claw portion appears more menacing than the "peen" (or is it the "ball"???).
multiple punches to the gut and heart at once.......1998-09-16
If you have read any of Vachss' novels with criminal-cum-savior Burke as protagonist, you should allow yourself the honor of feasting on his short stories. The title is a play on the world's take of how children are bad seeds, i.e., born with a bad streak, prone to be losers, and addled with overripe genes for destruction; this book is a one-man treatise on why that is, summarily, not true and it's done with the usual minimalist and spare style prose Vachss is by now famous for. My preference is for his short stories, and the why of that is simple: it's a shorter, more rapid, and much more heart-wrenching path to the much-welcomed truth that only Vachss seems willing to tell. For me, he is the male counterpart of the Greek mythological character Cassandra--he comes bearing the truth that no one really wants to hear, but the fact is, once heard, you can't take your eyes or ears off of him. For a nonstop, nonpareil ride into the gloom and doom of what child abuse is, where it emanates from, and possibly the solutions to fix its ugly cast upon the world, read these stories; you will weep and you will cry with joy at the sheer simplicity of it, right along with the cutting-edge prose that digs in and plants its tentacles into your heart.
A powerfully written collection of noir!!!.......1998-06-14
In his Born Bad collection of short stories, and three plays, Andrew Vachss takes the reader through an underworld which can be found in every major city, around the world. Yet is all too often, ignored by most of society. In this collection of ultra violent descriptive noir, some no more than three pages, Vachss's stories are some of the most powerful you will ever read. His prose hits you like a burst of gun fire, and it will leave many of its readers uncomfortable. Which is exactly what Vachss wants. As in all of his books, Vachss wants the reader to not only learn of, but to feel what a horrible subculture has developed in our nations cities. To feel the pain that many of our children feel, and to experience the horrors, and nightmare world in in which they live. Born Bad will do this and then some. For those who are already familiar with Vachss' books, it is a must read. And for others who are new to noir, or want to take a tour of the underbelly of the urban jungle, or "junkyard" as Vachss calls it. I recommend that you get a copy of Born Bad. This collection will not only make you stop and think, but you will never look at life and people the same way again. This year Vachss has published his latest novel Safe House. An excellent read, and I look forward to more books in the Burke series, and perhaps a Born Bad Collection 2. Vachss ranks with Raymond Chandler, James Ellroy, David Goodis, and Thomas Harris as a master of the noir genre.

Don't buy it new !.......2007-08-28
Ladies this book has some useful information, however most of the information is only helpful for those who have done little research.
This could be a good starting reference book. I did find a few things out I did not know and went to a few websites I had not considered. So for the used book price this book is worth the money.
Did you know that hair loss is one of the first signs of diabetes, and I wish this book had touched on this fact ( copyright on this book is 2000). I however, have not seen really any information other than on diabetes' websites that informs you of this and they have been updated.
He does give more possibilities than other books that were copyright dates of 2005 for natural supplements and diet. I can find hair restoration anywhere and don't think that should be so deeply covered in a book of hair loss. It should have dove deeper into diet, diabetes, and other causes.
I found the bald truth to be better than this book, it is by the same author.
Warning - don't read this book unless you're an insomniac.......2003-07-16
After reading this book I can tell you this, Stanley Kobren is certainly no expert on hair loss, but he is good at making his readers fall asleep. The book has no meaningful insight and most of the information is written mostly on a grammer school level. Don't even waste your time reading this book if you're serious about avoiding hair loss.
Doesn't even cover the basics.......2001-09-25
This is an extremely superficial book on hair loss. You can find out more on the internet in about 15 minutes than you can by reading this book. Nearly half of the book is devoted to transplants, wigs, etc. rather than talking about WHY people lose hair and what can be done about it short of these drastic measures. So many women suffer from hair loss that is treatable and this book does not offer any real help or advice. Stick to the internet and the wealth of knowledge available on hair loss sites.
Somewhat helpful.......2000-07-30
Although I liked this book, I already knew most of the information that it contained. I was somewhat disappointed that the book did not have many specific recommendations for hair loss products, i.e.: dosages, amounts, application procedures. The book also spent way too much time discussing hair transplants which are not an alternative for most women due to diffuse hair loss and unstable donor sites. The book gives far too few doctor recommendation and once again, the doctors recommended were mostly hair transplant specialist. If you are a beginner to female hair loss, you will probably find this book helpful as it does contain good basic information. I, myself, was disappointed.
Excellent Book - A Real Lifesaver!.......2000-02-25
Thank you, thank you, thank you. This book has given me hope after months of heartache and frustration. My doctors have not helped me at all, it seems like all they know about is Rogaine and nothing else.
I now have the knowledge I need to seek out alternative and new treatments that have never been mentioned to me before.
Not only do I recommend that every woman reads this book, but every doctor treating women for hair loss should read it too, you may just learn something!
Book Description
Vodka is the worlds most popular spirit as 12 million Americans can testify. In The Vodka Cookbook John Rose takes vodka out of the martini glass and into the kitchen with over 100 recipes. There's something just a little bit naughty about cooking with vodka. You tell someone there's vodka in their dinner or dessert and their eyes widen their lips curl into a smile. An ordinary meal becomes an extraordinary event. But did you know that vodka does wonderful things to food - in marinades, it tenderises meat, it is great for de-glazing pans and adding flavor, while in cream sauces it lowers the boiling point and so helps to prevent curdling and all while delivering a unique, delectable taste.Inspired by his love for cooking, his years working in Moscow, and the best vodkas in the world not necessarily in that order, John Rose has assembled over 100 uniquely invigorating recipes, from Chilli con Vodka to Glazed Confused Chicken, Kremlin Pasta to Vodka Crepes. There's something for everyone in The Vodka Cookbook. Of course, the book wouldn't be complete without some cool cocktail concoctions like the Molotov Cocktail and Vodka Sangria.

Collecting Lladro: Identfication and price guide.......2006-02-20
As a Lladro collector of more than 25 years I found this book to be most informative. Even though I have read much about Lladro there were topics covered that were new to me. A new addition would be most welcome.
A good read for Lladro enthusiast.......2005-10-25
Good book to read about Lladro porcelains but it's pretty outdated and doesn't contain samples of the newer Lladro pieces. But then again, Lladro related books are so rare, this itself is a jewel. Majority of the pictures shown here are the 'official' photographs of piece by Lladro themselves. It would have been great to see pictures taken by the author or owner as it would give a different angle and view of the pieces. I'm an avid collector and was thrilled to see many of the older pieces and read a short history about them in this book. Perhaps the author would consider to publish a newer edition?? And also source out Lladro examples from a more varied selection of collectors. A view of how they are stored in display cabinets at individual homes would be great too, to give a more personal and homely touch to the pieces. This is a great book and I'm sure it took a lot of effort to come out with it.... I would recommend it to anyone and hope that new editions will be published in the near future.
A Fantastic Resource!.......2004-04-18
For anyone who is interested in learning more about Lladró, the company, the history, the incredible artistry, "relatives" such as NAO and Zaphir, collecting and becoming better at collecting, and how to care for your collection, this book is fantastic and I highly recommend it! Peggy Whiteneck is truly an expert in this field, and has a passion for collecting Lladró that shows in every page. This second edition includes updates and new information as well as even more photos. Lladró collectors will not want to miss this!

incomplete coverage.......2002-08-20
i was/am looking for an indepth price and value guide. this book is pretty but not complete at all. i reccommend the Official Lladro Collection Identification Catalog and Price Guide by Dr. Glenn Johnson for serious collectors. If you can find it! Try Baron Rolen Jewelers in Stone Mtn. Ga.
Beautiful and informative!.......2002-07-23
Kudos to Peggy Whiteneck for a book that can be enjoyed by collectors and non-collectors alike! The author's knowledge of and respect for this wonderful artwork is apparent on every page. I have been collecting Lladro for many years, and I learned some interesting and useful things in reading this book. I read it from cover to cover on the very first day I brought it home, and have referred to it frequently since then.
This book is a thoroughly researched, beautifully photographed, well-organized and thoughtful treatment of the subject. It is a must for anyone who enjoys the beauty and artistry of Lladro! I hope this is only the beginning for Peggy!
Gorgeous Up-To-Date Treasure For Lladro Collectors.......2001-11-21

There's plenty of text, and complete item discriptions. There is even information on care and cleaning of Lladro. Information on restorations is provided and when it is worth doing. Current price ranges are shown. Lladro fans will surely enjoy this work. A very worthwhile addition to your collectibles library.
This is really interesting. And I don't collect!.......2001-11-06
I do not collect anything. (Except maybe paid electric bills, and family pictures.) I have nothing against those who do, I just never have. This book was referred to me by an acquaintance. And you know what, this is really interesting! This book is surprisingly easy to read, informative and actually enjoyable. It shows a whole world, revealing in the most beautiful manner subtle aspects of an art which would easily escape those, like I, without a trained eye. It's obvious the author's experienced. I'd like another book by her. That's a lot for a non-collector!
COLLECTING LLADRO - A MUST BUY.......2001-08-30
At last!! A book that gives great details on LLADRO. Not only the primary market but the secondary as well. Hats off to Peggy for finally getting "THE HAMMER" some recognition. We have been collecting LLADRO for over 15 years, have visited Valencia twice, and have over 600 pieces - including every clown and amost every harleguin. Most have been purchased on the secondary market. Janet Hammer is the best. I'm glad to see LLADRO has put their stamp of approval on this book, along with some of the premier collectors, by providing pictures and data. A great gift for Christmas. Hopefully this is just the first of many. Getting any kind of old info on LLADRO is difficult at best.

Facelift.......2007-06-17
Great book. I cant get enough of debbie travis.
Flawless Transaction.......2006-08-19
The book arrived in perfect condition and in a shorter amount of time than specified. Thanks!
Debbie Travis Facelift - did not live up to expectations........2006-08-02
I have a collection of five of the Debbie Travis books - this is one (Debbie Travis Facelift) that I really did not enjoy compared to the others by Debbie Travis.
This was not a very good "How to do" book - instead it only shows end results and most of the rooms shown are limited to a very eclectic or modern style of decorating. My other 4 Debbie travis books show a wide range of styles that basically can appeal to everyone and they show a variety of painting styles and decorating. For me two far more useful Debbie Travis books are Decorating Solutions which was really wonderful, and Painted House which I think is fabulous.
Great Companion Guide to her Decorating Show.......2005-12-23
This book is a good companion guide to Debbie's FaceLift show. It focuses on several of her facelift projects and includes tips and a few step-by-steps for projects. Where this book excels are the photographs of the rooms, her color choices and combinations and the "before" and "after" pictures.
The first 15 or so pages contains basic info and an intro to her Facelift team. A lot of the time it is difficult to see the before pictures because they are so small, but the main part of the book, her creations, are beautiful. Most of the designs have a contemporary, modern feel. Debbie has a great way of combining function, color and classy styling to her designs.
I think my favorite part of the books are her color choices. So many of them I would never have considered but she shows how you can select a bright yellow or a subdued steel blue and make it beautiful. The best part is that most of the projects seem "doable" without expending huge outlays of time and effort (unlike some of her Painted House books).
Before-and-after renovation pictures accompany step-by-step project hints and plenty of tips.......2005-10-10
Maybe you're renovating your house: take a look at Debbie Travis and Barbara Dingle's Facelift: Solutions To Revitalize Your Home it focuses on innovative solutions for decorating problems to turn dark or dull rooms into lively or restive retreats. Mood-inspired sections advocate choosing color schemes which work: before-and-after renovation pictures accompany step-by-step project hints and plenty of tips.
Book Description
This book is a powerful reminder that there's more than one solution to every creative problem. Author Mark Wasserman has created a unique experiment in design that is much like the process of remixing music. Top designers were given the source files to one of 37 original designs and asked to reinterpret the original art into new creations. Ultimately, the project was not about making a design better, but about different visual approaches. Besides being a visual treat, these remixes can also serve as a creative jolt for those inevitable times when designers need a little extra inspiration.
Each section starts with an original design and detailed Q&A-style captions that explain the concept and process behind the design. The following redesigns--ranging from wild freeform creations to more subtle changes--are paired with insightful interviews that give readers a rare glimpse into the creative thought process.
In all, the book features 160 designers, from 20 countries around the world. Designers involved include such notables as Stefan Sagmeister, Dave Eggers, eBoy, KINSEYvisual, Joshua Davis (PrayStation), Modern Dog, The Heads of State, WeWorkForThem, Jemma Gura, UPSO, Aesthetic Apparatus, Brent Rollins (Ego Trip), Plinko, Deanne Cheuk (neomu), 2Advanced, Nonconceptual, Jon Santos, HONEST, kozyndan, Milky Elephant, Patent Pending (SubPop), Mr. Jago, and many many more.
With page after page full of never-before-seen artwork, this book is equally at home in a designer's bookshelf, and a non-designer's coffee table.

Exercise for the Creative Imagination.......2007-06-08
This collection of original ads and the subsequent exercise done by at least 4 different design firms is a very interesting approach to an art book. I enjoyed the accompanying "interview" with each designer so you could align the feeling you got from the rework with their explanation of the approach.
So far so good..........2007-05-07
I work as a designer myself in an advertising agency and have only had this book for a short time, but really enjoy looking and reading through it. It has givien me inspiration and motivation in my own work. Also it has been a good way of seeing how other designers and artist percieve the same idea or concept. This book is great for anyone who wants to see or learn how other designers work, it's a good motivational tool.
Inspirational!.......2007-02-09
Right when I opened this book I already knew that I would be hooked. The idea that certain design work would be redesigned by other designers helps me to see that there is never one way to solving a problem. If you want a new perspective on a project you are on, perhaps this book will help!
Totally reinvents the 'redesign' genre of design books.......2004-09-30
If design books have one general fault, it is failing to keep up with the curve, the leading edge of graphic design. Things change so quickly. The subgenre of redesign books has been among the worst offenders in this area. That's because many have been content to take 15 year old designs and reconfigure them for today, in the process inadvertently passing off more or less standard results as special work. This book is a total break with this lazy tradition of contrasting your father's design and your own generation's. It does that by picking relatively recent designs for "what if" rethinking. The results play out as mind-blowing re-envisionings of already edgy design. To me that's what sets this book apart: the pieces being redesigned aren't ancient, they aren't the least bit stodgy. In most cases, the originals up for redesign could probably themselves have appeared in fairly recent design annuals, and may have, in many instances.
Rethink Redesign Reconstruct is a fresh, exciting book that stands out in a genre of the design book field that has settled into a comfortable rut. I would call it a definite must have among current design books.

Product Description
The peculiar craft of piano tuning is not the actual subject of this collection of essays set in the Arkansas Ozarks. Rather, it invites the reader to a privileged view of the idiosyncrasies of human nature as the author travels on her daily rounds from the concert halls of cities to one-room churches on isolated dirt roads. Ministering to her clientele and their pianos like an old-fashioned country doctor, the author encounters unforgettable personalities, a variety of instruments, and the breathtaking Ozarks.
Customer Reviews:
A marvelous music memoir.......2006-09-04
Very few of us have an inkling of what a piano tuner's duties might entail. Thankfully, Denele Pitts Campbell shares some of her experiences with us in this lovely memoir. "I sometimes see my professional duty as an almost sacred task, a ministration to eternal muses which give music to speak what words cannot say in questions or answers that are never clearly formed." (page 8) Wow! We accompany her on this noble mission as she travels the back roads of Arkansas to get to her customers -- the payers as well as the players. Hers is the kind of job that gets her out and traveling through the landscape, which she seems to enjoy almost as much as the pianos and people she meets along the way. She visits and performs her work at a variety of venues: private homes of all kinds, churches, schools, concert halls. Each has it own unique demands; and to say she has seen a wide variety of keyboards is the ultimate understatement. Still, one woman can only do so much, and Campbell can't create a concert-hall Steinway from a rinkey-tink mouse-house spinet. Issuing death sentences on mistreated instruments -- ones left too long exposed to the elements (dirt floors, barns, mice, snakes (!), extreme humidity, or extreme temperatures) -- is seemingly the toughest part of her job, especially if it means removing the possibility of music from a deserving but impoverished home. And the reader has to wonder: is Campbell of a dying breed, a fading past? As electronics and computers take over our lives, will our need for piano tuners diminish in return? After reading this book, one hopes not.
Excellent and well-written.......1999-08-12
This book is wonderful, gentle and moving. The author truly loves what she does, and she loves the people whose pianos she tunes.
