Book Description

Probably the most popular book in the history of the Far East, this classic sixteenth century novel is a combination of picaresque novel and folk epic that mixes satire, allegory, and history into a rollicking adventure. It is the story of the roguish Monkey and his encounters with major and minor spirits, gods, demigods, demons, ogres, monsters, and fairies. This translation, by the distinguished scholar Arthur Waley, is the first accurate English version; it makes available to the Western reader a faithful reproduction of the spirit and meaning of the original.

5 out of 5 stars Please read Monkey carefully.......2007-10-08

My father used to read this book to us as children and I have read it to all of mine. It is way more than just a story. The main story concerns an actual historical figure who was hugely significant as the monk who in the 7th century brought Mahayana Buddhism to China. In part the book is a teaching text, containing instructions on certain practices encoded into the story. The Monkey of course represents human consciousness which must be tamed before it can be useful, and the early part of the book contains an explanation of why this cannot be achieved by traditional Taoist methods alone. Having been controlled by the Buddha, Monkey is then able to gain mastery over Pigsy, who represents the gross physical body with all of its appetites. I am told that Arthur Waley's 1935 translation, while making a rollicking story, may not be strictly accurate in the scholarly sense, but I think it makes such a great read that who cares? Not only is it readable, but although written in the Ming Dynasty, it reamins as fresh and lively as any contemporary novel. Look for the hidden meanings as you read it and learn.

4 out of 5 stars Ancient Chinese Huckelberry.......2007-01-21

A blurb from The Nation describes the book as a "combination of picaresque novel, fairly tale, fabliau, Mickey Mouse, Davy Crocket, and Pilgrim's Progress." I would add to that list The Divine Comedy, The Odyssey, Huckleberry Finn, 1001 Arabian Nights and modern political satire. But despite the seemingly esoteric description, it is a light, breezy novel. The reader doesn't need to know who Lao Tzu is to laugh when he pinches Monkey and tells him "Be off with you, be off with you, and don't let me find you hanging round here [heaven] anymore." The reader doesn't need to have a few University years of Chinese fiction or philosophy under the belt before laughing at Monkey stuffing himself with the Jade Emperor's peaches. Nor, even, does the reader need to be steeped in morality, for, though having early attained immortality and, we all know, on fast track for Buddhahood, Monkey still likes to crack a dragon joke before clobbering one over the head with his cudgel in "a real garlic-pounding blow that will finish him off for good and all."
Waley's translation flows lightly, using a vernacular that is simple, easy and inviting, and, at the same time, reminiscent of the sagacity of the veteran Boddhisatvas, many of whom make guest appearances. It is a beautiful, wild, fun story centered around a stone-born ape, aka Monkey, aka "Aware of Vacuity," who tromps the world over in search of mischief, power, peaches, sacred texts and enlightenment. Strikingly similar to 1001 Arabian Nights in both form, wisdom, and content.
"I wonder whether a knowledge of the True Scriptures would not cause some improvement in them? Do you yourself possess those scriptures?'" asked the Bodhisattvas! `Yes, three baskets of them,' said Buddha," and the journey begins...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Translation of Chinese Classic.......2006-01-10

Monkey (or the Monkey King or The Journey to the West) is one of the great epic novels in Chinese culture. Set in the 6th century, but not written in the current form until the 16th century (it was part of an oral tradition before that), the story is on the surface about the pilgrimmage of a Buddhist Priest, Hsuan Tsang, and his 3 disciples/side-kicks: Monkey, Pigsy and Sandy, as they journey to India to bring back sacred scrolls from Buddha. Arthur Waley has done a truly impressive job of translating, editing, and bringing to life a selection of the stories (30 from 100 original chapters) from the original Chinese book. He retains the complete first section about Monkey: How he was born from a stone, the trouble and mischief he caused on earth and in heaven, and how he reached the title of Sage, Equal of Heaven until getting imprisoned in a stone under a mountain. Waley then presents a selection of the adventures that the 4 cohorts encounter in their journey to find the scrolls. Each of the adventures follow the same theme of encounter a difficulty, i.e., some people in trouble, help the people to overcome the difficulty, usually through magical or supernatural powers, and then move on. By translating an abridgement, it prevents this repetitive style from dragging on, and it stays fresh. In addition, to the basic story line, one learns much about ancient Chinese culture, Buddhism, and some about Taoism. Moreover, the 4 pilgrims rather than being model characters are actually quite flawed, which makes the stories fascinating, because it always requires a group effort to surpass each hurdle. This is a wonderful book. Translating from contemporary Chinese to English is difficult enough, but from 16th century Chinese, Waley has done an amazing job.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, moralistic folk tale........2005-12-30

My daughter had this book for a reading assignment during thanksgiving break and I had to get a copy for myself plus another one to share. Anyone reading Monkey will identify with the main character at some point, if not throughout, the book. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A review of my favorite book of all time.......2005-05-02

I have always enjoyed epics. My current read is The Epic of Gilgamesh (the completion of which is frequently interrupted by returns to the masterpiece you are reading about). Previous to reading Monkey, Dante's Divine comedy ranked highest on my list. My interest in the anime and manga story Dragonball (and subsequently, Dragonball Z) turned me onto the Story of Monkey and The Journey to the West.

Comedy is the word I would use to describe Monkey, moreso than Dante's work. The central character's rise to glory is so colorful and intricate, one cannot help but laugh. The introduction of Kwan-Yin brings a serious aspect to the tale and a more admirable goal, but the focus on Monkey keeps the nature of the journey in check. Despite the absurdity of the characters Monkey and Pigsy in particular (though not them alone), the story maintains a very epic feel.

This version (up until Kwan-Yin's introduction) deals very little with all the Buddhist dogma that permeates the story. Even afterward, Monkey's mission is at the forefront. The author has done a fine job making the tale accessible to everyone (being a white, American, Christian with appreciation for Buddhism and Taoism) and has cut much non-essential dialouge.

One thing I had to get used to was the structure of the text. Paragraph breaks are not always used and oftentimes, conversations are not broken up in the traditional "..." he said "..." she said" format. Oftentimes, many quotes are strung together before you know who is saying what. The style takes a little getting used to, but this book still gets 5 stars. BUY THIS BOOK! You will not regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Second in the Owen Archer Series.......2007-03-09

Candace Robb has read and researched medieval history for many years, having studied for a Ph.D. in Medieval and Anglo-Saxon Literature. She divides her time between Seattle and the UK, frequently spending time in Scotland and York to research her books.

York is very close to my own home and many of the places mentioned in the Owen Archer books are still there to be seen and of course Archbishop John Thorseby is mentioned in the records of York Minster. All this adds spice for me and helps me to picture the time and events that took place. This is the second novel in what is proving to be a captivating series.

It is the year of our Lord 1365, Owen Archer is called to the Minster Close by Archbishop Thoresby. The Archbishop is well aware that Owen has many skills to add to his expertise with the long bow. The Welsh archer also has a rare talent for detective work. While the city of York has been celebrating Corpus Christi, a man has been murdered. The man's severed hand has been delivered to Gilbert Ridley, a merchant and Owen is sent to investigate.

4 out of 5 stars The Lady Chapel.......2004-02-17

The Lady Chapel, the second Owen Archer mystery, is an enjoyable read. For me, the best part of the mystery is seeing how Owen puts together all the pieces of the puzzle to solve the crime; for the reader the mystery isn't that difficult to solve. Detective work is still new to Archer, and he is a reluctant sleuth. How he develops the skills to solve the crimes is part of the enjoyment of the series.

Candace Robb does a good job of conveying the atmosphere of medieval York, and she is very good at avoiding psychological anachronisms. Her characters don't psychoanalyze each other, and feelings and motivations are described metaphorically not analytically.

The Lady Chapel continues to develop the working relationship between Owen and Thoresby, Archbishop of York. Owen and Lucie are adapting to married life with some difficulties. This book introduces us to Jasper, a young boy, who witnesses the first murder and then must go into hiding, fending for himself. He is such a sweet, yet tough, kid; I cheered for him throughout the entire book. The Lady Chapel should be read after The Apothecary Rose in order to understand the relationships of the characters. Readers of Rose will enjoy this second installment of the series.

4 out of 5 stars OWEN IS GETTING BETTER.......2003-08-01

I read (and reviewed) The Apothecary Rose simply because I enjoy the time period (Edward III, HYW, Welsh archers, etc.)and enjoy learning about the intricacies of every-day life. Very fascinating. However, I didn't particularly like the first outing beyond the periodic history lessons - the writing style takes some getting used to because she jumps point of view from 3rd person to 1st person, which she does in The Lady Chapel - I found this to be maddening at times. Her other fault is her tendency to rely on convenience to push the mystery along. The Lady Chapel is definitely a marked improvement over the first, but still Owen is very two dimensional - we just don't know him enough to really care. I can only recommend this book to people with a taste for the period, but not for hard-core mystery fans.

      5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Mystery.......2003-05-10

Wow! Candace Robb is a marvel. Many compare her to Ellis Peters (the Brother Cadfael series), but I'd put her well before Ms Peters. Although I thoroughly enjoy Brother Cadfael and feel comfortable with his author's competence, Ms Robb is not only formally trained in historical studies/research, she's also an excellent teller of tales and a wonderful teacher as well.

Ms Robb is apparently just shy by a dissertation of her PhD, and one can see by the quality of the historical detail in the Lady Chapel and her other books, that she probably had gotten well into her paper before abandoning the project. (I've worked through MA level and know exactly how much work goes into completing the coursework, let alone the research for papers.)

She also has, if not formal training in writing, at least a very clearly defined concept of what it takes. In her "Author's Notes" at the back of Lady Chapel, she writes an excellent exposition on what it means to be an author, especially an author of historical fiction. THOSE OF YOU WRITING PAPERS for English lit, journalism, history, etc. or for those writing historical fiction themselves, TAKE NOTE: She makes some eminently quotable statements about these subjects in that chapter. For instance on the subject of character: "Many people think of history as mighty figures, epic events, and statistics. But at their best, historians bring the past to life by suggesting the motivations of the mighty....Historical novelists or dramatists go further by reducing the mighty to human scale. Shakespeare put a human face on Richard III in his fatal battle by using the fact noted by one historian, that the turning point for Richard was when he was unhorsed. The Bard lets us witness Richard's tragic awareness as he cries, 'A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse (p. 283)!'" She notes too, that it is the simple, every day character and his/her believability that brings a story to life (p. 283). Later, on the subject of motive and event, she writes, "A key element in any study in character is motive. Motive traces the trajectory of an action....What fascinates both the historian and the novelist is that any one event seen through the eyes of different participants suggests completely different motives, and it's the sum of the motives that culminates in the epic events. For a mystery writer, there is an additional fascination in how many people have motives for any crime, innocence being at times little more than a lack of opportunity (p 283)."

The engaging tales the author creates by using historical characters and detail are an artful way of encouraging the reader to find out more. Although my area of historical interest has always been the ancient world, particularly the Near East, I found myself browsing lists for books on the age of Edward III and of the so-called Black Prince Edward of Woodstock, his son. I wanted to find out more information about the period. Now that's a teacher!

The Lady Chapel is a very complex tale of murder, court intrigue, passion and deceit in the city of York. The author's descriptions of the environment create a vivid picture of life in the 14th Century. Well worth it.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2002-10-23

I read at least one book a week in many genres - historical fiction, fiction, mystery, thriller, action, fantasy - and I loved this second book in the Owen Archer series.
Lady Chapel is even better than the first! I can't wait to read the next one. Characterization is superb, you grow to know these people and care about them. The story is based on real historical facts, but honestly I couldn't care less because I get so wrapped up in the characters. My only wish in this book was that the author had put her loyalties with the reader in regard to Alice Perrer and let her fall from grace and give us some juicy vengeance. I cannot believe there aren't more reviews of Ms. Robb's Owen Archer series, they should be hugely popular! I will be recommending them to every reader I know.

5 out of 5 stars The Classic Pilates Book.......2005-04-12

This is the classic book on Pilates matwork and Pilates principles. The original, hard-backed edition has been long out-of-print and very expensive on the used book market, but well worth the money. How exciting to find it republished!

Any Pilates student or instructor will be delighted to add this most informative and useful manual to their bookshelf. It is clear, very well written, beautifully illustrated, and comprehensive. As much as I like Brooke Siler and Alycea Ungaro's books, I find myself using this book more often.

The subtitle says it all: Discovering Wine is, indeed, "a refreshingly unfussy beginner's guide to finding, tasting, judging, storing, serving, cellaring, and, most of all, Discovering Wine." If you thought you'd have to make a spectacle of yourself in public--sniffing corks, gargling bordeaux, etc.--in order to become educated on the subject of wine, relax. Author Joanna Simon makes it clear that even the most retiring persons can learn to judge wine without drawing attention to themselves. Using a combination of pictures and text, Simon describes the steps involved in tasting, serving, and storing wine. She offers suggestions for matching wines with different foods, then takes the reader on a tour of famous vineyards, explaining just what goes into a really fine vintage. Finally, she includes brief descriptions of the best-known wines from wine-growing regions the world over. So if you don't know your Asti from your Madeira, let Joanna Simon set you on the road to knowledge with Discovering Wine.

4 out of 5 stars Great Place to Begin.......2003-02-20

I'm a beginner. When I received "Discovering Wine" by Joanna Simon as a gift, I felt intimidated. Would it be stuffy or over my head?

Its strength is in the simple presentation of the facts. The chapters are clearly titled, like "Matching food with wine" and "Ways to store your wine." The writing is clean, though it comes across slightly elitist (ex: choosing 'wend' instead of 'wind,' noting a certain country produces a 'credible' variety of wine). It is balanced by an encyclopedic style, providing insight into the basics of wine appreciation.

Many countries are highlighted for their vineyards and wines. Learn which wines are made where, and how the process is distinguished from country to country.

The pictures are sharp, beautiful and informative. You'll see terraces of Germany, hills of Tuscany, and the mountains of Peru in sheer splendor and relevance.

Especially useful for me was the lexicon of tasting terms, a brief lesson on wine tasting and what to look for, and a discussion (with perfect pictures) on which glasses and decanters to use.

The weakest aspect of the book was the chapter on matching food and wine, but the weakness was not in the content, but in the brevity. Ten pages should have been 20.

I fully recommend "Discovering Wine" by Joanna Simon as a first book.

3 out of 5 stars Nice beginner book, but some tips outdated.......2001-12-27

Overall, this was a nice introduction to wine. However, it was obviously written in the early nineties, so the good year/bad year tips on many of the white wines that were not meant to age for ten years are kind of useless today (For some wines, 1987 may have been a good year if you drank it in 1991, but in 2001 it might taste a little closer to vinegar than you prefer.) But if you learn enough to know that the book you are reading is outdated, then you must have learned something. Three stars.

                      5 out of 5 stars A user friendly book.......2001-10-03

This is a really nice book, to get you started in wine appreciation.

I also bought a Perfect Sommelier, because I wanted to taste the wine as soon as I bought it, instead of waiting years for it to be cellared. Use Google to search for it.

The book really helped in locating some of the many varieties of wine that are available today. I love the 'Dummy' book too!

                      4 out of 5 stars fun.......2000-04-11

I thought that all the pictures were very helpful. There is a lot of background infomation on the countries that make wine. The reading is positively refreshing and easily read.

Unfortunately, as an amatuer wine connoiseur I wished that they would have something a little more tangible. For example I like to drink zinfandel, but there are many different companies that make zinfandel. Some are good and some are bad. I was hoping to get a list of some of the more well liked as well as less liked brand names. That way I could have more of an idea what professional wine-tasters look for. Instead of thinking that my second rate 10$ bottle of wine is the same as some 50$ bottle of wine.

                          Book Description

Collecting insulators is synonymous with collecting history. Ever since the first telegraph line was constructed by Samuel Morse in 1844, glass, plastic, and other insulators have played an important part in our technological society. They have made it possible to carry telegraph, telephone, and electrical power lines over vast distances, connecting the nation and the world. This is the first book ever to graphically demonstrate the hundreds of beautiful colors to be found on insulators throughout the world. There are over seven hundred color photographs, each with a descriptive caption to guide both the beginner and advanced collector through a huge assortment of designs and manufacturers. Each photograph carries a current value for the item shown. No other book captures the beauty found within this colorful and historical hobby.

So many people have antique insulators in their basements and attics but don't know what they are worth. Most insulators aren't worth much at all ($1-$5 a piece), but the rare few are worth hundreds to thousands of dollars to serious collectors. Before you get rid of the "old junk" in your attic make sure you know what its worth. This book is the definative authority on collectible insulators. Otherwise you'll never know if you have a "diamond in the rough" or just a box of junk.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and unique book for all kinds of crafters!.......2006-07-11

"Memories in Miniature" by Pamela Frye Hauer is so cool, I love it! It's definitely not your typical scrapbooking book. The projects are geared towards "memory crafts", (using photos and mementos), but they could all be adapted to little art pieces and other projects not using photos. The style is really fun and funky and often has a retro/artsy feel to it. The cover doesn't do justice to all the great artwork and ideas inside. This big and colorful book has 4 chapters: Family & Friends, Events & Celebrations, Babies & Children and Home & Holidays; everything is covered in here, and all the projects are really vesatile. Each project in the book is 2 pages, with full color photos including variations, instructions and many have "how-to" photos too. Plus there are dozens and dozens of additional ideas and tips throughout the book!

The projects range all the way from building and decorating many kinds of unique mini albums, all the way to jewelry, magnets, snowdomes, home items and even little games! Pamela shows how they can all be used as much more than keepsakes too- like for one-of-a-kind gifts, invitations, ornaments, home decor, favors, etc. All of her ideas can be done quick and simple by beginners, or done with as much time and detail that an advanced crafter might like to invest.

So, if you're an artist, collector, scrapbooker or crafty at all, this is a really nice-looking, well put-together and useful book to add to your library!

5 out of 5 stars Great Ideas, and this stuff's so fun to make!.......2006-06-12

Pamela Frye Hauer's "Memories in Miniature" has the best photo keepsake and gift ideas I've come across in ages! As an international flight attendant, I have traveled the world from one end to the other, and I have stacks of albums with pictures of airplanes, landmarks, and faces from every continent. I considered myself a scrapbooker of sorts, saving train tickets and cocktail napkins to put in my photo albums alongside my snapshots, and making the occasional trip to Michael's to buy suitcase stickers. My friends would peruse the first few pages of my albums before gently closing them and changing the subject. But after a friend of mine turned me on to Pamela's book ("you've got to check out her ideas!"), I compiled some new mini albums, one of travel shots and several of my nieces and nephews, with shots from bris to bat mitvahs, and I can barely keep those albums on the shelf. Now my friends oooooh and aaaah over every page, and when they get to the end, most often they start right over again. Pamela's book is packed with unique ideas and great techniques for making a big deal out of small photos. What I like best about this book is the way she taught me to look at my photos differently, and taught me I can crop the best bits out of what might be a so-so 3x5, and make eye-popping mini memories! The magnets I've made using my very own photos of the Sydney Opera House and the Panama Canal are the showpieces of my kitchen, and my sister-in-law loves the necklace I made for her with my favorite photo of her twins -- her friends are lined up with their own baby pictures begging me to make more! And the fact that she illustrates her ideas with her own memories, using photos of what are obviously her family and friends instead of clip-art landscapes and studio portraits of models, makes even her most elaborate ideas seem achievable. I have already started collecting tidbits I plan to use for my own wedding invitations and favors, and we're not even engaged yet. (fingers crossed!!) I wonder if I could get Pamela Frye Hauer to help me put my wedding album together... You WON'T be disappointed with this fun and original book, and you'll be thrilled with the results you get with your own memories!!

                              4 out of 5 stars I Love Pictures!.......2000-05-06

Although this book is a simple read with little information to the more interested reader, the photos are superb! Reading other books that are words only don't do as much justice as a good photo. Photo's don't lie-they just show it how it is and you can make your own decision from there. Excellent reference guide. Wish there were more.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to a fascinating character.......2000-01-09

The intelligently written brief biography (in German, English, and French) is magnificently illustrated with glossy photographs of Ludwig's family, friends, and architectural creations, as well as large reproductions of every likeness of the king that I have ever seen. Often, many pages of pictures intervene between paragraphs of text. For someone who knows nothing of Ludwig, this book will inspire a desire to read more. The true fan will want to have this excellent collection of photographs to augment the often crude reproductions in other books, and to see some new views of beloved sites.
