Does Ms Morgan judge Australia because she is too ashamed to look at her own history? Surely such lessons could have been learned with the Native Peoples of America, or even with the African Americans who were taken as slaves? Does she feel justified to look down her nose at others while ignoring her own historical heritage? Shame shame Ms Morgan. People who live in glass houses should not throw stones.
Only a non-Australian who had never even bothered to visit this country would get anything worthwhile out of this rubbish.

The style and story of this book was intense and a major eye-opener for me. I found the answer for a problem I had been grappling with for some time. So, I would say this book is wonderful...no matter how the author came to aquire her knowledge of spiritual matters. I don't care if the story is "true" or not. It is deeply touching and meaningful.

1996 Morgan apologises to the Aboriginals - book support retracted
January 26: A delegation of 8 Aboriginal Elders leave for the United States to defend their religion and culture and to block the move by Hollywood executives at United Artists to turn Marlo Morgan's claims into a major motion picture [9, 26]. Morgan sold the film rights for U$1.8 million [11].
January 31: The elders receive an apology. "Morgan admitted for the first time to the eight elders that her work was fiction and a fabrication" [5, 26]. She said: "I would like to say that I'm terribly sorry and my sincere, my sincere apologies to any Australian Aboriginal person if I have offended them in any way." [10]
Dr. John Stanton (Berndt Museum of Anthropology, WA) "said the book contained misleading and damaging information about Aboriginal people" [5]. He was not sure, he said, "whether the damage the book had done to the overseas image of Aboriginal culture, which was complex, diverse and vibrant, could be ever undone." Morgan promised a written apology, which she actually never produced [6].
March 4: Burnum Burnum retracts support for Marlo Morgan [7] in a letter to the Dumbartung Aboriginal Corporation [8].
1997 Aboriginals protest during lectures in Japan
March 25: Eggington calls for "Mutant Message" and the books of two other authors to be taken from all Australian bookshelves and destroyed [14].
April 7: Dumbartung coordinates protest against Morgan's lectures in Japan. Eggington and a Bardi Elder travel there, give press conferences and appear painted and with didgeridoo and boomerangs at two venues. Morgan comments that "they represent all that is bad, and I represent all that is good". Eggington and the elders leave Japan on April 21st [26].
August 18: Burnum Burnum dies [8].
In this year another interview is published in the Golden Age (New Age magazine). Lorraine Mafi Williams, "a traditional teacher and custodian of Aboriginal culture and wisdom" talks about whether the journey was authentic and how the Aboriginal community reacted: "I honestly don't think this woman ever took a walk with anyone except perhaps as a tourist on a tour into the outback." [20]
1998 Morgan publishes a second book
June 1: Harper Collins publish "Message From Forever, A Novel of Aboriginal Wisdom", by Morgan, which she claims "is really written by Aboriginal friends telling me to please do this".
October: phenomeNEWS conducts an interview with Marlo Morgan [16] in which she claims to "have gone back periodically" to the tribe she claimed to have travelled with in the first book. Despite all the uproar there has already been up to that time, phenomeNEWS claim they "were unaware of the controversy surrounding Ms. Morgan and her book" when they did the interview...
1999 Aboriginals outraged again
January: Morgan seems not to have learned from the experiences with "Mutant Message". Her new book again outrages the Aboriginals in Australia. Morgan describes a woman giving birth, but "that is private women's business. For someone to (describe a birth) is insulting and offending to people and their cultural beliefs," says Ms Jo Willmot, chairwoman of the Uluru-Kata Tjuta board of management [13].
May: Film producer Michael Taylor is said to have "entered into agreements for the production of 'Messenger', based on the best seller Mutant Message Down Under" [15].

When reading the book I can't judge about historical correctness of it. But it's very interesting that this bad review from "an Aboriginal Woman" is not signed with a name, but "a reader".
A review like this I would assume is written by one of the descendents of those white people who were (are) so sure to do the right things with the Aborigines in the past.
Or:
A review like this I assume is written by one who is not willing to accept that there is another way of life and that very basic rules of our "civilized" society might be wrong.
There is one thing to be sure: Those, who accept the message of the book, those will be the last to blame anybody for their opposite opinion. So, why not critizing openly?

"A man has been through an experience, now he is looking for the story of his experience"
That is the starting point of this breathtaking pseudo novel. And here I am not trying to debase the book by using the word pseudo: it is just that I have the sensation that Frisch has been writing down notes aimed at something else that is supposed to be a novel. He's got the man; he's got the experiences; now he must build the story. And with this purpose, he explores every feasible event that may occur to the character.
He proposes for example: "Let's say my name is Gantenbein." and goes on, "Let's pretend I am blind". And he deals with all the possible consequences that may be derived from his assumption. What does it entail to fake blindness in the realm of everyday life, love, and friendship? Is there any room for jealousy when blindness prevents us from seeing the evidence? Now let's call the man Enderlin, let's suppose he's about to die, and let's give him a lover. And let's his lover be Gantenbein's wife. Furthermore, let's Gantenbein even be Enderlin; assume his wife is an actress, and allow her cheating blind-faked Gantenbein, and so on.
The result is a beautiful mosaic of characters that makes up the draft for the two main characters, Gantenbein and Lila, just a man and a woman, a modern couple. And of course, there is also "the situation", plotted in all imaginable ways, which may make the reader recognize him or herself sooner or later along the book.

Boring, funny or difficult to read are definetely neither accurate, nor scientifically adequate adjectives one should use to describe and classify a novel (not a book, but a novel). Frisch's Gantenbein is not to be evaluated emotionally, but rationnally. It should therefore not be grasped as a love story, or one about (so-called) human feelings, but as a text mainly dealing with the problem of identity, about a decentered I. Frisch manages to create not only an excellent experimentalist piece of art, but aswell a representation of the internal tension of personality, including extremely insightful auto-reflexive passages on Art and Literature. Definetely one of the finest writers of German language of all times.

Gantenbein tells the story of a man who sees his love and marriage falling apart. In his attempt to look for a rescue, he envisions different scenarios (which may, to the superficial reader, appear to be inconsistencies) that would help him to find a way around the unavoidable. The different scenarios are both, very funny and also insightful. This is an outstanding novel.

Gantenbein is a fantastic book. The inconsistency of the plot the other reviewer mentioned is intended and part of a certain ideology. Most of us are Gantenbeins, not being able to identify with who we are in reality and dreaming of another existence. I was disappointed when I found out that this fabulous book is not in print anymore, it would have been such a good present

I think this book is very boring and I've got a little bit tired with the plot and the characters. I found this book extremely difficult to continue reading. Also the book is full of inconsistencies. But I think there are many good ideas and themes in this book, but they none developed. I don't recommend this book at all. Not only a story unsatisfying, but the writing style is extremely annoying as well.

I Don't Like Anthologies...But I couldn't Put This One Down!.......2005-06-15
It's true, I detest Anthologies because short stories are...well, um, short. I literally cringed when I purchased this from Amazon.com because I was so afraid that I would just not be able to get into this book. Surprizingly, I was proven wrong. There is still a part of me that wishes that some of these stories were full-blown novels but that feeble thought did not prevent me from reading onward.
This is a clever collection of short stories (I still can't believe I am using those words together in the same sentence)! I am not into Lesbian Fiction so I just skimmed over those stories (but judging from the reviews I have read from others, if you like Lesbian fiction...you'll probably be happy). Even though I'm a "Slasher" that did not bother me.
I have read and re-read this book several times for the two short days I have owned it. The M/M stories in this collection are smart and sexy with juicy storylines that will challenge your thoughts (Delaney's "The Tale of Small Sarg" ) and make your pulse race (A. J. Potter's "Birthmarked").
Everything is represented here: Swords and Sorcery - "Breakheart", science fiction - "A Canopy Of Green", horror - "Roses For The Prince"...you name it. I promise you, you will not be disappointed and often times be left breathless (and in my case...wanting more).
I'm still not sure I am a new "anthologies fan" but occasionally I guess I can be pleasantly surprized every once in a while.

In the early days of science fiction and fantasy, lesbians and gays were portrayed--if at all--in an unflattering light. Even in a genre that allowed writers to explore alternate realities and societies, gay people were still depicted as one-dimensional stock characters:weak,evil and depraved creatures that reflected the cultural taboos and stereotypes of the day. Fortunately, times have changed somewhat, and many authors have written a succession of wonderful books and anthologies, showing gays and lesbians in a more positive light and as complex human beings.

If you have a narrow mind, don't read these stories--they may give you stretch marks. If your mind and heart is open, I heartily recommend this book and its brilliant and thought-provoking predecessor, WORLDS APART, by the same publisher. Unfortunately, it is out of print at this time, but well worth the search for a used copy!

This book provides an accurate reference for someone interested in this subject. It can be too truthful for someone faced with this awful disease. Therefore beware of giving it to a sufferer or carer whom you wish to shield from the facts.

The book on moles and melanoma.......2005-09-13
I got this book because I have moles and wanted to learn more about them and understand the diagnosis and treatment for melanoma.
The glossary and index were very helpful. The best aspect for me was the photos of moles and the chapter on skin warning signs.
Part I of the book starts with recognizing and preventing melanoma. Part II of the book focuses on Melanoma and the treatment. Part III is the less common types along with research.
I found this book to be a wonderful resource as I hit 45. The diagrams are useful as well.

This book was an encellent source for me and my family regarding my recent diagnosis of Melanoma. I read the entire book in one day and refer back to it very often! Highly recommended reading that is on a level everyone can understand.

This book is for anyone who has been diagnosed with Melanoma. It is written in a way that is easy to understand. Knowledge is needed with this disease since it is so different from other cancers. I found answers I haven't been able to find from my husbands oncologists. Excellent book!

This is an excellent resource for American Brilliant Cut Glass collectors. This is the second-edition of Revi's book, and is better and full of more pictures. The pictures of the cut glass are of great quality, and could not look better. THIS IS AN EXCELLENT AND RESOURCEFUL BOOK. 5 Stars.

I guess I'm a little disappointed........2007-01-29
Definitely some great pieces of glass in this book. However, I found the printing of the images rather dark and sometimes lacking clarity....the pictures are a little fuzzy or out of focus on some pages. Some pages were much better than others for photo detail. In addition, there was a large section devoted to pictures of stained glass catalogs and glass factory postcards that I didn't find particularly useful...I guess I'm a little disappointed in the book overall, despite it still being a good reference for American art glass.

This is an excellent piece of work. It will be of much interest to any serious collector of American glass. The photographs are very good, the historical perspective is to be commended, and the pricing of pieces seems to be well researched. Of course, the focus is on high end items and categories of glass so that it is not a stand alone reference for all "art glass" produced in the United States. Nor should it be. It is a fine book to be part of a collector's resources on the subject.

A jumbled up mess.......2006-01-24
One of worst of the newer "collector" books out there. There isn't even a color chart with the names, you need to deduce them by flipping through all the pages and guessing at collections of variuos colors and doing a process of elimination. Fakes are mentioned, and the author says "you'll know them when you see them". Thanks alot! All the marks aren't even listed. What about newer peices versus old?
Some Encyclopedia, more like ramblings of a collector. The medium green issue is already covered by others, the book mentions it everywhere but gives very little evidence of it (maybe the author has medium green envy?).
Not worth the bargain price spent on it. Certainly not a reference book.
p.s. I give other collector books 5 stars, so I'm not just a grump.
Huxford's Fiesta 10th Edition.......2005-08-06
I just received the 10th edition copy of Collector's Encyclopedia of Fiesta, and other related items. The new layout and design are exactly what this edition needed to set it out above the previous ones. It seems the forward is a bit lengthy. Each page is framed in the turquoise color. The new pictures are numerous!! And for those who collect New Fiesta (produced since 1986, the pages for this are expanded to include up thru Scarlet and quite a few of the pieces produced thus far in color pictures. I rate this book at 4 stars for one reason. I feel the prices are inflated and out of line. Yes, there will always be some "rare" items at high prices. There are a fair share of pictures that are the same as previous books as well.
A Good Beginning.......2005-07-10
The title of this book "Fiesta" can be a little misleading to the novice or seasoned collector. Beyond actual Fiesta and Fiestaware by Homer Laughlin the author's detail company history by delving into Harhequin, Riviera, Mexican lines, Kitchen Kraft, even promotional items and advertising.
For Fiesta identification pieces the pictures and Plate descriptions are very good. Pictures, specifically are very clear and concise while the page quality is excellent. In particular, this book will provide a very wide range of history and the wide variety of products offered by Homer Laughlin Co. over many years. Although the title suggests a book on Fiesta, this portion is limited.
If your looking for price comparisons or rule of thumb the book is weak in this department, it does not effectively handle all colors preferring to provide information strictly on the "hot" collector pieces such as 'medium green.' Of course, prices quoted in books are strictly "guides" as the internet, antique malls and live auctions mix up values on a weekly basis. Current research and personal perspective will be the true guides for market value at any given time.
Fiesta is covered in the first 73 pages of this book (pre/post 1986) and then moves on other topics or products produced. This book would be a fine starter for the novice but additional resources will need to be added for a complete library on Fiesta and Fiestaware.

Not the Most Comprehensive Guide.......2007-05-12
Nice enough book, but it is so hard to really provide a complete guide to such a broad subject. I was looking for information about Brayton Laguna blackamoors, and the offering was sparse, nothing more than a line in the index, and a brief description in the text. Maybe the author will do a book on Brayton Laguna blackamoors one day. Anyway, I returned this book because it did not fit my needs. It is hardly an encyclopedia, but rather a pretty picture book with some expanded captions as text. If you want a real tutorial on California pottery, work the search engines at eBay or Google...you can spend hours reading and looking at pictures.
California Pottery.......2007-01-15
This is an excellent book that I use often to identify pottery pieces. Not only does it contain beautiful clear photos of pottery it also provides a wonderful brief, well written, history of the various potters and potteries. Very informative indeed! I also reccommend California Pottery Scrapbook by this same auther.
Exceptional Resource.......2005-12-03
Great guide that covers a good majority of California Potteries with a good selection of works from each potter. Values are not too inflated and color pictures are wonderful. A must if you need a general guide to vintage California Pottery, a hot item right now.
Great reference for California pottery !.......2003-08-10
Being that I live in Ohio, the big pottery names here are ones like McCoy, Roseville, and Weller. I knew nothing about any of the West Coast pottery companies. I desperately needed a source of reference. I chose this book and I have not been disappointed. It covers 28 companies,gives a biography of each,shows examples of the marks used, and very clear photos of items made by each.Descriptions and values of the items shown are also included.I highly recommend this book for any pottery buyers library.

I would recommened this book to anyone interested in collecting California pottery. This book has a large selection of photos of the various types of pottery produced and the different markings used on the pottery.

a great follow-up to the first book, making ribbon leis 2 continues on its lei making path, this time challenging the reader with more complex and time-consuming leis. these may take a long time and require effort, but the finished product is truly breathtaking and very realistic. (4) Surround yourself with like-minded, equally talented partners. (5) Follow your heart, put forth your ideas, be fearless. (6) In a grid-locked Modernist era, produce fanciful, hand-drawn work. (7) Keep doing it for 50 years.
Over 25 of those years, distribute 86 issues of a self-promotional publication that still continues to inspire.
For a quarter-century, members of Push Pin Studio used every art technique -- woodcut, charcoal, watercolor, collage, pen-and-ink, color adhesive film -- to interpret subjects including Good and Evil, Black and White, and Teens and Bikers. Topics ranged from the serious ("Violence and the American Dream") to the silly ("The Mouth").
Milton Glaser has been known to say that nobody draws any more. This book, which features at least one cover and spread from each issue -- many tattered and yellowing -- may spawn a revival of the artist's hand as a design tool, and a revival of the one-color job. The first 30 or so issues of the Graphic, with a couple of virtuoso two- and three-color exceptions, are a lesson in how to do brilliant work in black on newsprint. Contrast is the designer's best friend and weapon: white space against black, tiny against huge, curlicue against justified column of type. Wit is a powerful tool, too.
A head-and-shoulders portrait of a large barnyard rooster graces the book's cover. Thickly outlined on benday-dotted background, he sports a tuxedo shirt, bow-tie, monocle, dotted beak, and bright red wattle. I'd like to think that the mascot choice has more to do with the concept of "something to crow about" than being fearful-or cuckolded. In a phone interview, Seymour Chwast set me straight by listing the bird's qualities: authoritative, prolific, sophisticated, and on-time. Ah-ha, the real meaning is "the early bird meets the deadline," with a few grains of self-mockery thrown in.
If Push Pin did not singlehandedly transform mainstream culture, as Steven Heller suggests in the introduction, it had a symbiotic relationship with it. Push Pin took from everything around them: from the Victorian, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco, from old signboards and newspapers, American primitives and wood-type specimens, from current art and music, fashion and advertising. The faces in Chwast's "Dante's Inferno" poster of 1967 echo Richard Avendon's solarized Beatles portraits. The Beatles' 1968 animated film Yellow Submarine -- and the rainbows-and-butterflies trend in animation that ensued -- owed its aesthetic to Push Pin. It will take a more diligent researcher than I to ascertain whether the color and line that burst through in the Push Pin Graphic issue 52 (and morphed into Chwast's signature style) was inspired by psychedelic rock posters, or whether the Push Pin style reached San Francisco concert promoters first.
Content aside, the Push Pin Graphic is a book well worth examining for its own design: the hefty squarish format, sense of scale and pacing, fine color and black- and-white printing on uncoated stock. The details also merit pleasurable study: old-fashioned typefaces like Cheltenham and Stymie set in old-fashioned ways like centered and flush-left-and-right; even the placement of the folios on the page. Just as the subject matter of each issue of the Push Pin Graphic mirrored goings-on in the world, the design and pacing of the book mirror the issues being featured. As the Graphic became more eclectic and colorful and began to function as self-promotion for a larger group of artists, the pages of the book become more patterned and colorful. Martin Venezky has honored the Push Pin style while designing a book that's 100 percent up-to-date.
This book may be a walk down memory lane, but it's far from an epitaph. Glaser, 75, now working on posters, books, a museum exhibition, and performance art with a political bent, recently said, "Retiring is for people who fundamentally hate what they do." Chwast, 73, added, "Every era had its doubts, but we kept going. The culture -- music, posters, films, kept rubbing off on us, and we keep reinventing it and rubbing it back on them."
If the Push Pin conviction, zest, and humor rubs off on today's readers -- and if some of them decide to shut down their computers and digital cameras for a little while and pick up a brush or pen and ink -- this book will be a great success.

An honest book from a smart man.......2007-07-09
This book is so honest, that at time it was painfull for me to listen to (I've got an audio version). The realization that I also sometimes want to escape the truth shocked me.
The book contains a lot of things you probably have heard - and not once, BUT Gene makes an old wisdom sound very convincing. He uses logic, facts, statistics and examples to make you re-think your beliefs.
He may sound cynical, but I think he really is a man who uses his brain.
I loved the audio-version - Gene is a charismatic narrator and I listend to the whole 4+ hours of audio in one sitting.
Is Gene sometimes wrong? Maybe. But everybody or almost everybody is.
But not everybody is as honest as Gene.
"If people tell you they don't want more money, they are a) lying, b) insane" - says Gene. It is true. But a lot of people lie about this even to themselves.
The book really made me look at life differently. I now see a "rebel" rock stars like Trent Reznor (a Kiss fan buy the way) or Marilyn Manson in different light - as businesspeople who spend their time earning money by selling their stuff to people, a lot of whom don't know how to spend their time.
It also made me really look at time and money and re-think the value of these resources.
I strongly recommend this book. And even you don't like some or all of Gene's OPINIONS, you still will probably find his ADVICE valid and useful. It works, baby.

No... this is not a politically 'correct' book. Its a bottom line type of book. It is refreshing in this era to have things like Money, Marriage, Sex and Business laid out as bluntly as Gene does here. even if you are familiar with these concepts, Gene's way of explaining is unique. Very cocky and very proud. Gotta love it..
There are some Kiss thoughts mixed in for balance and to get Kiss $$, but it is more or less just a mans view on life as we know it. There are good suggestions along with some ideas that you may have never thought of.. A good purchase for the modern man. I dig it.

What a fun character Gene Simmons is *g*, this book is definitely entertaining - he is so full of himself but maybe that's part of his success, he believes in himself at all times (and if he doesn't, he sure doesn't show it) - regardless, enjoy the amusing ride in Gene's world. You have to take him with a grain of salt though or he'll brush you the wrong way. Definitely not a book for narrow minded people, they might have a heart attack reading it ;p. He appears to be a natural in everything he does and when things don't work out, he takes it as "lesson learned" and moves on to the next quest, nothing seems to get him down. As for his "unmarried" state, the man is only brutally honest, this might be tough to swallow for some ladies out there. I don't know what the ladies see in him (unbelievable record there my boy) but he DOES have a good voice and I have the feeling that he can be a very smooth talker if he wants to be (listened to an interview I've found online on NPR). I would give this book 5 stars for the pure entertainment value of it but it IS to repetitious, that's my only complaint. He talks about things and then there are pages sandwiched in between with graphics and it's basically the same content again. Still, I do recommend reading it, it's highly amusing!

It was written by a woman who overcame severe dyslexia in her childhood. She's a great example of a success story.
