Book Description
Prepare yourself for the heart-stopping romance of newcomer Liz Carlyle. My False Heart is the luminescent love story of a chance meeting between two strangers one dark, rain-swept night in the English countryside. From that moment on, their destinies are forever changed.
When Elliot Armstrong, the dissolute marquis of Rannoch, pursues a spiteful mistress into the wilds of Essex to sever their relationship, he is surprised to find himself hopelessly lost -- in more ways than one. Inexplicably drawn to a warmly fit house along an isolated country lane, he is mistaken for an overdue guest -- but he dares not reveal his identity for fear of being tossed back out into the torrential rain, a fate he admittedly deserves. The loving family that innocently welcomes Rannoch into their midst soon challenges his cynical convictions, and ultimately, resurrects his shattered dreams.
The beautiful Evangeline van Artevalde is an artist of exceptional talent and extraordinary secrets. Isolated from society by choice, the half-Flemish refugee has fled her homeland in search of a secure haven for the children in her family. But even the Essex countryside, she finds, is not without danger. As the clutches of her aristocratic English relatives tighten, Evangeline holds them at bay by sheer force of will, unleashing her emotions only within the walls of her studio. The furthest thing from her heart is desire -- until a drenched, strikingly handsome man shows up at her doorstep late one night. Soon, Evangeline finds she can no longer confine her passions to oil paint and canvas.
Drawn by desire, Elliot and Evangeline discover a powerful love neither thought possible. But malevolent forces surround them, and soon their secrets will be exposed and their hearts tested to unthinkable limits. Only if they can forgive the past will they have a future....

Bitter, vengeful Elliot Armstrong, whose provincial ways once left him vulnerable to the cruelties of the Ton, stumbles upon an isolated country estate that overflows with warmth, love, and innocence things completely foreign to him. He quickly tumbles head over heels in lust with Evangeline van Artevalde, a complex and passionate artist who lives with her boisterous family at the estate. And while the passion between them is undeniable, neither is completely honest about who they are. A twisted take of mistaken identity ensues.

The intensity of this book really is amazing!.......2005-06-01
Perhaps for the first 75 to 100 pages I thought I was not going to really like this book. There is so much to take in. You begin with Elliot such a sweet, vulnerable and naive young man - it is so obvious that Cecily is out to trap him. Then it jumps 10 years and the Elliot that you are now reading about dealing with mistresses in such an unfeeling way?? Then comes all the debauchary and rumors and he has an 8 year old daughter from a casual affair. My goodness what could have happened to completely change Elliot from that sweet, lovestruck young lad to a complete and total rake? My heart slowly was just breaking for him - and I had absolutely no idea what happened. But he ends up - it had to be the Gods of fate - at Chatham Lodge and by chance meeting the artist Evangeline - Evie and her family are like heaven to Elliot. He is mistaken for another man who is to have his portrait painted by Evie. He pretends he is just a man Elliot Roberts (not the evil Lord Rannoch.) And the thing is you see him being the man he started out to be at the beginning of the book the sweet, loving considerate man that he would have been if so many events that he had no understanding of had not dictated his life.Evie falls for this simple man Elliot Roberts and when the truth comes out your anquish over whether she will be able to still love the dreaded Lord Rannoch will make you tear up and truly keep on reading! Oh this just becomes the most beautiful of love stories. There is much mystery and danger too but then Lord Rannoch's life had been filled with unsavory characters. He will almost loose his life because of all of the old deceptions. How interesting it was that Evie finds out truths before Elliot. I found myself just captivated by another of Liz Carlyle's intense romances. Again, I have to say if you are a Carlyle fan you will not be disappointed.
Nothing false about this book.......2004-12-14
I only discovered Ms Carlyle recently but she's become one of my favourite authors since. I'd read her later books first, but My False Heart loses nothing in quality compared to the later ones.
The yearning that Elliot displays came through extremely clearly. You will feel for them both, and what more can you ask for in a romance?
AN AUTHOR TO BE TREASURED!.......2004-09-27
I discovered Liz Carlyle quite by accident and I'm very happy. She is very skilled with words and a wonderful storyteller. While reading My False Heart I savored each word. I could not stop reading and at the same time I did not want the book to end. All the characters are unique and very well developed. The descriptions of the family's interactions and the hero and heroine's feelings and thoughts were a rare treat! I have a new favorite author. Highly recommended!
No False Romance.......2003-04-20
Ms. Carlyle has successfully captured the magical peace true love brings to the redeemed. The heroine in MY FALSE HEART, embodies the strength of the truly beautiful woman: not only in outward appearance, but as a person with so much love to give her family and friends, she is their safe harbor; one hunky rogue of a hero [must read the pond scene!] who is almost so lost in debauchery, he carries faint hope of ever becoming clean again.
It seems fate has brought Elliot Armstrong to the door of Evangeline van Artevalde and her loving, extended family. As head of her household, the home Evangeline has made for all under her roof is filled with the warmth of love, laughter and intellectual pursuits--all that has been missing from Armstrong's privileged, though wasted life.
Although the hero's reputation has been unfairly maligned by foul gossip, he fully accepts, and flaunts, the parts of his bad name he has brought upon himself. Hurt by the betrayal of a past love, Elliot Armstrong has devoted ten years of his life to living as a wastrel, little caring how it will all turn out--until Evangeline becomes his friend. He then alternates between fantasies that she will love him and shame that he could corrupt her.
Though dire obstacles threaten Evangeline and Elliot's chance at happiness, Liz Carlyle has written a lovely story about the power of love and forgiveness.
A disappointment.......2002-09-14
The main characters in this novel were well developed and the plot took some interesting twists, but on the whole I found this to be one of those novels that you skim through rather than read.
I found myself skipping over sentences, paragraphs, and even entire pages. There were long drawn out passages of narrative summaries that describing everything and anything in painful detail, and page after page of text without any dialogue or interaction between the characters to give it snap. There was an over abundance of internal dialogue that had the characters talking more to themselves than to each other, and a lot of secondary characters that were hard to keep track of (probably because I was skipping so much).
All in all (in my opinion) not a very satisfying read.

Customer Reviews:
Hang on for a wild ride!.......2007-08-10
This is certainly the best book so far in this series. The action is non-stop, and the tension just keeps increasing. We get a first-hand look at the operation of First Nation-owned gambling casinos, and the effects both good and bad that these facilities have on the First Nation tribes that have them. They bring prosperity and money for programs for the people, but they can also bring unsavoury people and companies to the casino because these people want to take advantage of he money that is being made. This book runs two parallel stories as usual. Father John is trying to determine what happened to an Arapaho who has disappeared. This Arapaho is the pit boss at the casino on the Wind River Reserve. Vicky is working as a lawyer for the casino and uncovers many secrets and frauds that get her into a pack of trouble. And of course, there are dead bodies along the way. The plot eventually melds together, and we have the formidable pair of Father John and Vicky Holden working together to uncover evil, dishonesty and also to unmask a murderer. This series keeps on getting better and better.
Killing Raven.......2006-03-03
Excellent book if you like Native American thrillers. We read a lot of the Thurlo books and Margaret Coel's books are a lot like those. The book keeps you on you seat and guessing all the time about the plot. You won't be able to put the book down once you start.
It's always a treat reading a new "Margaret Coel".......2004-11-09
This latests mystery was no exception. The plot involves a casino that has just opened on the Arapaho reservation in Wyoming. Vicki, an Arapaho lawyer, is desperate for work but not very excited when she gets offered some work by the casino -- she has some concerns about the place. In the meantime, Father John, Jesuit priest who runs the reservation mission, has been called on to say some prayers over a body that's been discovered. And that involvement leads to Father John's getting caught up in whatever is going on at the casino, as he attempts to locate someone who has gone missing. So -- you have both Father John and Vicki snooping around the casino, and since they have an unstated special regard for each other, you know their paths will cross -- and they do.
I don't know why I love Coel's mysteries so much, but it has to do with her portrayal of life on the reservation -- I feel like it's a place I know well, and that her fictional characters are real people I've met. The plotting is very good, but that's not why I read the books. My only complaints about her books are 1) enough of Vicki and Father John pining for each other -- Vicki needs to forget about him and find someone available; and 2) I don't like all the violence that usually marks the end of Coel's books -- this one being no exception.
Vicki works for the casino.......2004-01-16
Margaret Coel hits all the right notes in the latest book about Arapaho attorney Vicky Holden and the Wind River Reservation's priest, Father John. The discovery of a dead body at Double Dives brings Father John into an investigation, just as his friend Vicky is offered a job at the Indian reservation's gambling casino. Vicky has her doubts about the casino job, but she is convinced by Adam Lone Eagle, the other attorney at the casino that it would be beneficial to her people. Vicky has been barely making ends meet in her law practice, so she agrees to join Adam. As she learns more about the operation, Vicky becomes suspicious about the legality of some of its practices. The human side of gambling problems is revealed when one of Father John's employees becomes enmeshed in gambling debts. The delicate balancing act of Vicky and Father John's relationship is again addressed in this book, and the possibility of a new romance for Vicky causes them to face some issues that they have chosen to ignore in the past. The beautiful background of the Wyoming reservation, the well-defined characters, and the tightly-woven plot are all typical of this series.
Casino complications on the rez.......2004-01-12
A new casino brings friction and prosperity to the Arapahos on the sun-baked Wind River Reservation in Coel's ninth Vicky Holden and Father John O'Malley mystery.
When a white man is discovered in a shallow grave on Indian land, Fr. O'Malley worries it has something to do with the "rangers" protesting the casino, largely through intimidation. Meanwhile attorney Vicky, barely making ends meet, has been asked to do some legal work for her tribe's casino. On an elder's advice she takes the job, along with his suspicion that tribal overseers are lining their pockets illegally.
The atmosphere of menace grows as Vicky noses into places she's not wanted and O'Malley wonders what the disappearance of an Indian casino dealer has to do with the murder victim. Coel dovetails their separate investigations nicely, bringing the pair together and fanning the flames of a friendship they can't afford to nurture. The plot explores the temptations of gambling, the crime it attracts, and the dilemma it presents to impoverished Indian tribes before building to a nail-biting, over-the-top climax. The Great Plains country and modern reservation life are particularly well done in this established and thoughtful series.

More than 43 million people of all ages in the U.S. suffer from arthritis, an often disabling disease for which conventional medicine offers only limited relief from pain--and no cure. Arthritis patients are increasingly seeking alternative therapies, yet these have their drawbacks, too: though some have proven benefits, many others are expensive and work for only some, others are useless, and some are dangerous. This book aims to be a "common-sense guide through the maze of the most-used complementary therapies for arthritis, to help you choose wisely among the many options available," and it succeeds beautifully. The book lists 22 complementary therapies, from familiar ones like acupuncture, meditation, tai chi, and yoga, to less accepted treatments like copper bracelets, magnets, and bee stings (don't worry, the book isn't recommending this, only providing information). The "Nature's Medicines" section discusses more than 40 herbs and supplements.
The book describes each therapy and how it is used, presents scientific evidence and expert opinion, and gives tips on how to find a practitioner and information on costs, advice, cautions, and resources in a helpful and reader-friendly style. There are also guidelines for working with your doctor, choosing a therapist, and avoiding rip-offs. Author Judith Horstman, a two-time Fulbright Scholar and award-winning editor of Arthritis Today magazine, makes the point that complementary therapies cannot "cure" arthritis or replace proven medical treatments. They can, however, ease symptoms and improve your outlook, and may even enhance the effects of your conventional treatment. This is an extremely useful and beautifully illustrated book for arthritis sufferers seeking to expand their treatment as informed consumers. --Joan Price
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Nice overview of all the alternative therapies........2003-12-28
Nice graphics and type. Treats all therapies evenly. Basic info across all spectrums, including what to expect at your first acupuncture session, what naturopathy is, and more.
Separates hype from hope, again and again.......2001-09-25
When this book was first released, I gave a copy to my 75-year-old mother, who has osteoarthritis. Over and over, she's told me about consulting this book when trying to decide whether or not to try some remedy that a friend has suggested. She feels that it has kept her from spending a fortune on snake oil, and has made her bold enough to try alternative approaches that have been helpful, such as glucosamine-chondroitin supplements. Obviously it was the perfect gift.
An Excellent Guide For Anyone, Traditional or Nontraditional.......2001-02-21
I found this book very helpful in making sense out of the confusing array of alternative therapies out there these days. Ms. Horstman provides a no-nonsense overview of many traditional healing techniques, together with a comprehensive bibliography and medical references. The organization of the book makes it very easy to use, too. Overall, this book shows a high level of quality on all levels, and is a valuable resource for those of us in search of health and healing!
Great resource.......2000-03-13
Overall, a finely-written and much needed compendium of arthritis information. Judith Horstman did a wonderful job of sifting through the medical literature to produce an easy-to-access resource for the (often) confusing world of alternative arthritis treatments.
Invaluable Information for People Living with Arthritis.......2000-02-16
Hortsman's book is a veritable gold mine of information about living an active life with arthritis. It will prove itself useful to people who have arthritis, loved ones, and the medical community. There is so much to be learned! The information is presented in a completely accessible way. Hortsman has demystified arthritis and offered an enormous array of treatments. Resources abound. This is "must" reading for anyone who is affected by arthritis!

Happy Texan.......2000-03-28
I am often disappointed with a cookbook because the recipes are too exotic or fail to have ingredients that I already have on hand, but happily not this time. I bought this book for my sister, but after trying some of the recipes (before I gave it to her), I decided that I would just have to keep it and give her another one. I can't wait to try some more! If you like Texan/Southern cooking, this one definitely belongs in your kitchen. I particularly like the Tex-Mex section. The book is well laid out and easy to follow. I'm sure when my kids get kitchens of their own I'll want to give them a copy, until then ..... we'll just enjoy!
Customer Reviews:
A rising star!.......2003-08-13
Not as fancy as it's younger sister Stop and Smell the Rosemary, but still full of great recipes! Many many full menus in the front of the book, neat historical references to different parts of Houston, good tex mex section; good game recipes and seafood recipes. Really a great book and a great price!
AHSOME!!!!.......2002-09-24
Best cookbook ever and I have an extensive collection. Have worn out two and now seeking my third copy.

Customer Reviews:
I'd have to agree with the last reviewer.......2007-07-09
This does seem like an overpriced advertisement-only magazine. Not a lot of information for those who are already collectors, and those new to the field will get little more than some nice pictures. But the pictures are very nice, so I'll give it 2 stars.
Save Your Money!!.......2002-11-21
If you are a serious collector then put your money towards another watch. This book shows no/little pricing. In many cases it is a paid advertisement of the watch companies - products and technical descriptions are not shown/listed. You can get more info from a companies website/product catalog. Very disappointing book. It is a slick high glossy collection of photos - you get neither a good coffee table book nor a technical reference. I gave it to the dog to play with - at least someone is enjoying it.

Give new life to your furniture--sofas, armchairs, dining chairs, director's chairs, deck chairs, daybeds, headboards, dressing tables, futons, footstools, blanket chests, folding screens--with the good-looking projects in this well-presented book. Basics are fully covered: working with color, pattern, and texture; measuring all types of furniture; and preparing the cutting layout. Each individual slipcover project is thoroughly explained, with directions on measuring the specific piece of furniture, a cutting diagram, a set of detailed step-by-step instructions accompanied by clear diagrams, and photos of the finished products. Though a few of the more tailored pieces require some degree of sewing experience, many of the items can be successfully achieved by the novice.
Customer Reviews:
Not for the Beginner.......2000-06-03
Slipcover Magic is a complete book that includes many beautiful and detailed slipcover styles. I am at beginning stages of sewing--therefore I needed more detail explaining calculating yardage, pin fitting, and construction techniques. For a more experienced seamstress this is probably a great resource. However, I felt that it lacked the simple details I needed in order to proceed with my basic slip cover project. Simple Slipcovers by Sunset provided the basic detail I was looking for.
Great help.......2000-05-03
I found this book to not only help me with a sofa slipcover color selection, but also with the overall look/theme of my living room. I recommend it highly.

Customer Reviews:
Wood Bible.......2007-05-12
This little book has a lot of great information about all different kinds of wood along with color photos. Since I am taking a Woodworking class and plan to take others it will come in handy for making a decision about which wood to use for my next project.
Could be Better.......2007-04-04
Not bad. Lots of color photos, and basic information about each species, but a bible it is not..more like Cliff Notes.
I would like to see examples of finished pieces of some of the species, and I couldn't find many of the species I was looking for. While I understand it will not contain every concievable wood, it was lacking information about all five of the species I was looking for, each of which was available at my local hardwood supplier and woodworking store.
Not bad for a basic reference, but you could get better information by doing a Google search of your particular wood.
Great book to help identify woods........2006-07-28
I am constantly trying to figure out what kind of wood I'm trying to work with and this book helps immensely in that. The color pictures give a great identification of both finished and unfinished wood.
Disappointing.......2006-05-30
I bought this book because a quick glance showed the the photos are very good. As one reviewer noted, most woods includes a full page photo that is split in half, one showing unfinished, one showing finish.
However, the book doesn't offer much practical advice for working the wood. A lot of the lesser used species include advice like "Gluing: Little is known, best to experiement on scraps." Uhh, thanks?
The reason I purchased a reference book was so that if I use something uncommon, I could look up things I don't know. Instead, the author, an editor of a woodworking magazine no less, tells me that the only thing his book is good for is the pretty pictures. This is especially true of the section called "Secondary Woods"--substamtially lacking in useful information.
Why isn't there a book that compilies USEFUL information about a wood?
Some of the photos on unique aspects, such as quarter sawn surfaces and figure, do not illustrate the wood well. For example, the photos of figured cherry, curly maple and crotch mahogany don't even start to illustrate the beauty of these woods. The spalted maple photo makes one think that spalted maple should be used for heating the house. The burl photos do a very good job however. (Why is bog oak listed under diseased wood?)
Also, there are inconsistent names used. For example, American elm is listed with the note that it is "often referred to as white elm" but later in the description it is referred to as "gray elm". So, is this just a typo or is there another type of elm called "gray".
Finally, the information provided is not very consistent. For example, Some woods have information regarding assembly (screwing, nailing, gluing) others don't. The omission of assembly information is inexplicable and rather unforgiveable. Anyone who buys woods will assemble it, won't they?
Another example, under Dutch elm, it says that it must be given "the opportunity to move when used as a panel or tabletop". Don't you need to do this with all wood? And if so, why isn't mentioned with any other wood? Is Dutch elm special?
And here's a list of woods not covered that probably should be: aspen, big leaf maple (aka oregon maple), ipe, lyptus, pernambuco, myrtle, claro walnut, peruvian walnut, granadillo, black acacia, red gum, canarywood, regular/american chestnut, mesquite,, goncalvo alves, cypress, box elder, lacewood, leopardwood, olive, lauan/phillipine mahogany, kwila, doussie, alaskan yellow cedar, port orford cedar, vera/argentinian 'lignum vitae' and sycamore.
If I could, I change my rating to 1 star.
BTW, the picture for horse chestnut is wrong.
Good reference book for the beginner and expert woodworker.......2006-03-16
Very good book, can be used as quick reference guide when trying to choose a wood to build any furniture, I found very useful the fact that it shows the wood appearance with and without finish so one figure out how the colour will change when a finish is applied.
For the ecological concious woodworker it tells you those species that are endangered. It describes the characteristics of each wood, hardness, grain, workability etc.
The only drawback I found was that I would have appreciated that in addition to the latin name and english one it should show the name of the wood in other languages
Book Description
The seventies had album covers, the nineties had 'zines. Today, the coolest graphic design is underfoot, on the decks of skateboards around the country. As books like Thrasher and the recent indie cult hit film Dogtown and Z-Boys prove, skateboarding is one of the most popular extreme sports today. And as its popularity has grown, so has interest in the actual graphics on the boards themselves-the different designs are coveted by boarders, covered by magazines, and serve as one of the most creative vehicles for graphic designers today.
Boards is the first book to focus on the unique art of skateboard design, featuring hundreds of color photos covering the work of today's hottest board designers, including Birdhouse (Tony Hawk's company), Girl (Spike Jonze's company), Chocolate, Zoo York, Enjoi, and 5Boro. As most boards are produced in limited runs and distributed locally, even the most die-hard boarders will have only seen a fraction of the decks included here. In addition to Q&A's with the designers, Boards features action shots of some of today's hottest boarders, making it a must-have for every fan.

Good coverage of the art of skateboard decks with most of the major designers included. Excellent interviews with the designers themselves and their approach to their work.Recommended reading to any collector of this art form.

are you kidding? MTV put out a book on skate art? don't even read any further, don't even think of getting this piece of junk. Look further and you will find something better for sure.

Anything else on the subject is far better. This is a poor slap-together that has no relevance to boards or board art. Looks like some first year asian art student's last minute hodge-podge before semester end. If you want the best, buy Sean Cliver's book "Disposable" instead.
Art of the skateboard.......2005-12-13
While I normally am pretty anti-MTV in terms of skateboarding (as MTV is the most mainstream of all mainstream), this book does an okay job of displaying the art of skateboarding in a cool and innovative way. Sure it may not be the most comprehensive of ALL books EVERYWHERE in terms of skateboarding, skate history, etc. But it does a good job at showing what it's got. The shots and art in this book are beautiful. I've always been a fan of aesthetics, "eye candy" you know? Which is one of the reasons I think our skateboard shop online does so well (
www.myboardshop.com ), the gear and clothing we sell is pleasing to the eye. If you like the clothing we sell, you'll probably like this book. I recommend it for the price; can't go wrong.
Non-Skater's View of Skateboard Art.......2004-10-28
I bought this book not because I am a huge fan of skateboarding but because I find the art interesting. This is defintely a good overview of skateboard art. The book includes a large number of skateboard designs, including a number of series by notable companies like Zoo York and Birdhouse. Even curious non-skateboarders will enjoy just paging through. The book authors also worked very hard on the graphic design; the pages have a sleek, embellished look that adds to the book's style but does not detract from the featured artwork. A few comments from a select few skateboard artists are also included, but they add little to the book; the book's strength is definitely in its artwork.
Overall, the book is a good introduction to skateboard art. However, I did notice that some skateboard companies (Zoo York, for example) were featured much more prominently than others, and it seemed as though some companies' artwork were missing. While this is a good book for casual fans, it may disappoint some skateboard enthusiasts a little.
