Book Description
An astonishing work of fiction from France's "best young novelist" (The New Yorker), the internally acclaimed author of "Pig Tales." The premise is simple: the narrator's husband leaves to buy a loaf of bread and never returns. Like the classics By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept and Dear Diego, Marie Darrieussecq's My Phantom Husband chronicles a woman's poignant descent into madness brought on by the loss of a great love. Combining a poet's exquisite metaphors with a painter's mesmerizing visions, Darrieussecq astounds readers with her exceptional imagination and stylistic genius. Surreal yet universal in its understanding of grief, this haunting novel reminds us why the New York Times hailed this young author as "fascinating and original."
Customer Reviews:
Genius or Gibberish?.......2002-06-28
Is this a brilliant work of fiction or 150 pages of gibberish? This little book can be a tough read. Is it because of its French origin and something is lost in the translation (the French are so different from us), or is it because as a man reading it I missed the point of the female writers nuances? I have not decided yet. From the description on the cover I was expecting the story of a desparate search for a missing person. But the action (if you could call it action) takes place in the narrators fractured mind, and half way through the book you begin to question if there ever was a husband. Maybe a second reading would bring more insight into the character. If you are looking for a book with a good plot, action, dialogue and character development, look elsewhere.
one stiff novel to read.......2000-04-26
As a matter of fact, this is not a very interesting book for all readers.(pig tale would be an entertaining one).On account of the fact that in this story, lengthy part was utililised by the author to portray the transformation of the mind of the wife whose husband has been missing. At the very beginning, she's so extremely worried about her husband. But then she became anguished, disgruntled, and even had some visions not real after she realised she can't find out where her husband is.As everyone knows,it's more unbearable to us to be abandonned by our close relatives than to know they were dead, and this reflects the reality too.To be honest, you may get bored by reading this story. However, great chance upon us contemplating the purpose of our existence.

From Library Journal
This second novel by Paris native Darrieussecq (Pig Tales, LJ 3/15/97) is a short, intense inner monolog written after the narrator has accepted the abrupt disappearance of her husband. Through it we experience the narrator's complete disorientation as the finality of her husband's departure and its ramifications become apparent. The disappearance unearths her grief at the previous losses of her father and prematurely born children. The shock of this new degree of isolation throws the narrator into a state of heightened sensitivity, causing her to experience sound, colors, and physical sensations to a surreal degree, almost as though she were living in several dimensions at once. Although this might signify insanity, the narrator always seems to be aware of what is around her and what she is doing. Darrieussecq weaves humorous passages into this essentially tragic novel, giving her narrator a depth of character beyond that of a mere figure of pity. This compelling work is highly recommended for larger public and all academic libraries.ARebecca A. Stuhr, Grinnell Coll. Libs., IA

Book Description
Las Cruces wasn’t a place most travelers would think to stop. But after Lew Archer plays the good samaritan and picks up a bloodied hitchhiker, he finds himself in town for a few days awaiting a murder inquest. A hijacked truck full of liquor and an evidence box full of marijuana, $20,000 from a big time bank heist by a small time crook, corruption, adultery, incest, prodigal daughters and abused wives all make the little town seem a lot more interesting than any guide book ever could. And as the murder rate rises, Archer finds himself caught up in mystery where everyone is a suspect and everyone’s a victim.
Customer Reviews:
Sex, murder, treachery........2004-11-23
Find a Victim is a classic example of California noir. While driving from L.A. to Sacramento, ace private eye Lew Archer stumbles upon a city known as Las Cruces where sordid secrets abound. Archer is a card carrying member of the hardboiled school of criminal investigation. He's a tough customer who can take a beating as well as render one if necessary.
Early in the narrative, a truck driver is murdered. As Archer seeks to solve this particular crime, he soon learns of a complex web of betrayal and deceit which binds together a number of Las Cruces' citizens.
This novel is about the seemier side of life. Illicit sex is a recurring theme, as are greed and jealousy.
MacDonald uses a highly descriptive type of prose, much of which is quite artfully written. And there are several distinct subplots which are all tied together at the story's dramatic conclusion. Though I found the narrative to be more convoluted than necessary, I have no trouble recommending Find a Victim to anyone who likes their mysteries hardboiled.
Fast paced and Entertaining.......2003-11-14
I found this "typical" novel to be a refreshing read. If you enjoy Crime novels, then you'll enjoy "Find A Victim."
Fast Paced and Entertaining.......2003-11-14
I enjoyed this book, as "typical" as it maybe, I think it's well worth a read.
Tough guy P.I. takes a beating, but keeps on trucking.......2001-12-30
This is a typical private detective book from the post-WWII era. In it, as usual, the hero (Lew Archer) is accidentally involved in a case, and then decides to pursue the case, even though DANGER is everywhere. There is the requisite amount of hero-being-beat-up stuff, combined with hero-beating-others-up. There are the "bad" girls, and the who-knows-what-they-are girls (or 'gals', perhaps). There are the seedy denizens of the seedy town doing seedy things. And those are just the cops! There is also the seedy motel owner and his dissatisfied wife. Also on hand is the young criminal (just graduated from the juvenile delinquent ranks) and the wise old man who has seen much heartache.
I suspect this book was pretty hot when it came out, but it's almost a parody of the genre today, sad to say. I can stand about one Ross MacDonald a year, just to give me some perspective on this part of the mystery/suspense scene, and Find a Victim is it for this year.

Book Description
"Emily Petersen knew her pregnant daughter-in-law, Sheila, was a drug addict. She knew the young woman was using drugs throughout her pregnancy, and she was prepared to see the effects in her newborn granddaughter--the stiff body, the frantic eyes, the shakes. What Emily was not prepared for was becoming a mother again at 59. But when she and her husband, Carter, arrived at the hospital to see the baby, they found a social worker and two bodyguards outside the hospital room. Sheila had been arrested on drug charges, and the baby was being removed. The social worker asked Emily if she would be willing to take the child. "I came in to visit a baby," Emily told her. "I didn't come to take a baby home." But her son was in tears, begging them not to send Amanda into foster care, and neither Emily nor Carter could stand the idea of not knowing where their granddaughter was. A week later they filed for custody. "
More than a million American grandparents today are the sole caregivers for their grandchildren, thrust into unplanned second parenthood by tragedies such as drug abuse, crime, physical abuse, divorce, abandonment, and the untimely death of their own children. At a time when they should be enjoying themselves, they find their lives changed, their finances challenged, and their parenting techniques antiquated and ineffective with this new, and often traumatized, generation they must suddenly raise. Offering compassion, encouragement, and fact-filled advice, Grandparents as Parents covers everything a grandparent in this situation needs to know in order to cope with the practical, day-to-day needs of raising a child today. Cowritten by the founder of the national support group "Grandparents as Parents" (GAP) and a veteran journalist, and covering the broad range of issues associated with the personal and social aspects of raising grandchildren, the book is also an important resource for all mental health professionals who work with this burgeoning population.
A highly practical handbook, Grandparents as Parents will equip readers with the knowledge they need to immediately take control of their lives, explaining how to:
* Navigate the legal maze
* Obtain financial aid\m-\including lists of what to take to
the welfare office
* Arrange for medical care
* Kick a disruptive adult child out of the house
* Enroll grandchildren in schools and advocate for special
education
* Cope with the special demands of drug-exposed children and
identify signs of potential drug use in teenagers
* Consider counseling for emotionally disturbed children
* Start a peer support group
* Become an activist for grandparents' rights
Divided into three sections, the first part of the book discusses the changes, feelings, and problems of grandparents, adult children, grandchildren, and family in general. These chapters debunk many of the myths associated with the phenomenon of grandparents as parents and the crises that lead to it. The authors offer invaluable advice on how to overcome the feelings of isolation, grief, anger, guilt, fear, and doubt that many grandparents in this situation experience. Relating powerfully moving, highly personal, and often inspirational stories, the volume lets readers know they are not alone, while also pointing out the incomparable rewards to be gained from raising one's grandchildren.
Section II addresses the bureaucracy involved in raising grandchildren. Readers will learn how to get through the alphabet soup of AFDC, IEP, WIC, and CPS, deal with court proceedings, and obtain other services for grandchildren. In Section III, the book turns its focus to the larger community of grandparents as parents, examining the changing definition of family and the political arena in which it is being redefined. This section provides invaluable information on how grandparents can find and/or start peer support groups as well as organize for political change.
Throughout the book are point-by-point lists of how to cope in a variety of family situations. An extremely useful appendix features lists of resources for grandparents and relative caregivers, including who to call to find support groups. For those starting a group, suggested topics of conversation are provided. Readers will also find information about additional parenting resource groups, recommended reading lists, and addresses (some with phone numbers) of legal organizations and associations and political action groups.
Topical, comprehensive, and filled with essential information, this book is a must for all grandparents who are taking on the challenge of raising a new generation of children. Mental health professionals who work with this population--including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, counselors, physicians, teachers, attorneys, and family advocates--will find Grandparents as Parents an invaluable reference as well as an ideal resource for client assignment. It is also a useful supplementary text for courses in social work, psychology, gerontology, and family sociology.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource on a growing phenomenon.......1996-09-20
Written by a therapist who has personal involvement with grandparents raising grandchildren and who has organized support groups for such, this book provides a thought-provoking look at a growing phenomenon. De Toledo dicsusses how these family units are created and identifies the needs of the individuals involved. She continues by describing the legal, governmental, educational and social welfare implications of such arrangements and encourages strong support sytems. Making this even more relevant is de Toledo's generous use of anecdotes and grandparents' own words. The book concludes with appendices of resources for grandparent caregivers and conversation topics for support groups. A bibliography and index are also provided. The book is available in both hardback and paper editions.
As a grandparent who is raising three grandchildren, this reviewer found this book to be credible, insightful and informative.
Book Description
Food writer and editor Susie Quick has built a career on follow-ing the hottest culinary trends across the country. But her passion for great food goes back to a more humble place: her childhood in West Virginia. Surrounded by talented, hard-working women, Susie learned to appreciate the great homemade desserts made by her mother's 'Cake Club'-a circle of sisters, aunts, cousins, and friends who swapped recipes, shared stories, and made life a little sweeter for their community. This delightful cookbook brings together seventy-five delicious recipes from the Club-cakes, pies, cobblers, crumbles, and other treats-reflecting both tradition and the author's flair for simplicity and style. With stories and photos woven through-out, The Cake Club collects wonderful recipes, and pays tribute to a tradition of strong women and the great desserts they bring to the table.
Customer Reviews:
Great - but not exactly a gift for mom!.......2006-02-25
I recently purchased two copies of The Cake Club - one for my mother-in-law and one for my collection of cookbooks. When I received the first copy (which was directly sent to my mother-in-law) I scanned through a few pages and found the stories entertaining and recipes tempting. HOWEVER, when I received the second copy (my copy) I read the entire book from front to back and found myself in an awkward state of mind. I just sent a book with a few risque stories to my very conservative mother-in-law -- a move that will cause a bit of embarrassment and explanation, no doubt. JUST A WARNING - most stories and quotes are G-rated and delightful, but there are a few you don't want everyone in the family to read.
I have, however, tried some of the recipes and now have dog-eared favorites. One is the Coca-Cola sheet cake on page 45. Ladies, this delicious and super moist Coke & chocolate cake is a great treat when needing "comfort food." The frosting alone puts you on cloud nine.
All-in-all, the book is a super buy. Just keep in mind (for those who are conservative or plan to give the book as a gift) the book does contain some PG-13 stories... so be warned (or warn the recipient).
A PG-13 cookbook!!!.......2005-02-20
FYI to those who are not expecting sex and swearing in a cookbook-this one has both.
Delightful.......2004-10-01
This book will actuall inspire you to bake. I have never been much of a scratch cake baker but after reading through this book I just wanted to say to someone "here, I baked you a cake" so I did. I wanted to make memories too. Watch a teenage boy's eyes light up when you present him with a sumptious home made chocalate buttermilk cake (with cream cheese icing) for no reason - and on a rainy Sunday when football is on from dawn till dusk! Now that's heaven.
This book is unique becaue it is more than a cookbook. It entertwines recipes with a tribute to inspirational women in the writer's life and it's filled with stories and anectdotes you can read while you wait for your masterpeice to bake. It's a joy that you can keep handy for everything from special occasions to times when you just want to endear yourself to someone in your life.
My favorite cake recipe book, now!.......2004-08-31
This is a most delightful cookbook with the combination of wonderful sounding recipes and humorous insights into the lives of the author and her family. One of the tales about her aunt and uncle, who were always getting even with each other had me in stitches, laughing until I cried!
I haven't tested the recipes, yet, but I'm a veteran baker, and can tell most of these recipes will make it to my "favorites" list! I needed another cookbook like I need a lobotomy, but couldn't resist the ad. I'm glad I got the book!
I have made the Coca Cola Cake, before buying the book, and it is great, using the Coca Cola Icing.
The book also contains recipes for pies and some other treats, taking up the last half of the book. All very tempting, I might add.
If you like to bake and enjoy home made cakes and desserts, I highly recommend this book!
....and it's a great read.......2004-07-14
When I first started flipping through Susies new book (I already own and have spattered and tattered her "Quick Simple Food"), I was firstly seduced by the wonderful black and white photographs taken straight from her family photo album. I kicked back one Sunday afternoon with "A Proper Cup of Tea".....and read for a couple of hours, all the funny stories and memoirs that reminded me of many times in my childhood, and some of the characters that were part of that whole 60's experience I now remember from black and white photos.
I laughed out loud and have read and re-read some of my favourite chapters, dog earring the pages to share with friends later on. It's a suprisingly good read for a cook book. All this and no mention of the recipes? Haven't tried them myself yet......but as I actually shared a house with Susie in Woodstock NY one summer, I've already tested quite of few of her scrumptious sweets and believe me, there's absolutely nothing like Sister Nell's Prune Spice Cake. Oh..my...God!!!

Feng Shui - Simplified!.......2007-07-10
This book makes feng shui easy and fun! Karen Rauch Carter uses the Black Hat style which is a very simple, but effective, form of feng shui. With this book you don't need a compass, pendulum or certified feng shui expert, in order to enjoy the benefits of this timeless art. You'll be able to start making changes to your home, and your life, immediately with the easy to follow instructions that are provided.
Inside, you will find a chapter for each of the 9 sections of the Bagua. Immediate action items and a short summary are provided at the end of each chapter, which can be referred to over and over. Karen will keep you entertained though out the entire book with her quirky sense of humor! She also provides loads of examples and stories of how feng shui can improve your life. I am an antique dealer, by trade, and I own my own business. I can honestly say that after decluttering my laundry room (my prosperity area) and painting it a pretty shade of lavender, I immediately noticed and increase in sales at my shop!
Just A Tip: Make sure you read chapter 12 before you start making changes in your home, the affirmations in this chapter will make all of your actions much more effective!
Well written and easy to understand.......2007-05-20
This is probably on the top five list of good feng shui books that I've ever read. Very informative and easy to understand and follow. It's really put together nicely.
While I do think there is definately something to harmonizing the energy around you, I don't think that moving your stuff is any guaranteed way to bring a certain thing to yourself. I have a love/hate relationship to books like this. I find some really good ideas, and some I think are silly and just don't work. I know that there are other issues involved. -Like what's in a person's birth chart for example. If someone is having a difficult planetary aspect in their money house, then, no amount of moving furniture/furnishings is going to change that aspect. Although, I do think it COULD help the person deal with it better. By moving something, it could represent a shift in how one has arranged or re-arranged their thinking about the problem. So, in that way, I think it could have a beneficial side.
I found many interesting things in this book, for example, in my helpful people/travel section of my home, that's where I already have the computer (World wide web) and I just happened to have a world map there. I found a lot of other helpful information too.
This is a fun and interesting book, and it's not gonna hurt anything to give something a try afterall. Just see what works for you.
Full of facts, well written.......2007-04-12
Excellent explanations and suggestions without getting bogged down in thousands of years of history. Written in 21st century speak with humor and intelligence. The best Feng Shui book in my bookcase (I have a few) -topping Lilian Too's series. Even tells you the anecdote when the sink is in your romance corner!
Rave Reviews for this book.......2007-04-03
I LOVED this book, and I am having so much fun with this, I have completely redecorated my home, using mostly stuff I already had, and all my friends are commenting "What have you done?" "It feels different in here" and "Everything seems to flow better". I hung a cutglass windchime in my missing "family" space to energize the space as recommended, and within minutes my youngest daughter called me. Amazing! And so much FUN! Now I am waiting for my romance energy to imporove!
A lot of Nonsense.......2007-03-19
I purchase several feng shui books and this one was the easiest to understand. However, nothing happened after purchasing several hundred dollars of feng shui items. Instead it seems bad things were happening to me. I junked all the stuff. I think it's total nonsense and more like witchcraft...stay away from it.

Artaud From the Inside.......2000-12-26
I have been reading, disecting, and deconstructing Artaud for well over ten years and find this volume to be indispensible. Well worth the price. The immedicacy and visceral quality of Artaud's words are captured on paper, and where as tapes of his anguished voice might crackle and fade in time, this first hand document of his perceptual experience is truly timeless. This is not only a firmly woven tapestry for those in the know, but also a good starting point for those wondering what all the fuss is about.

Just two short years ago, The Dixie Chicks were practically unheard-of outside of Texas, but today, they're the hottest act in country music. The explosive popularity of their album Wide Open Spaces has rocketed the Chicks to the top of the charts, and in the last year alone, they have won three Grammys (Best Country Album, Best New Artist and Best Country performance by a duo or group with vocal), two Country Music Association awards and an American Music Award. Their new album is expected to do even better. Now, veteran country music writer Ace Collins has captured their whole inspiring story, from their early days playing to loyal fans in Dallas, right up to their current success and thrilling future!

The Chicks.......2000-04-15
I'm not the kind of person who likes country music, but when I heard the Dixie Chicks on the radio, I was pleasantly surprised at their music. So I bought this book and it is very interesting to read about all the things the Chicks have been through. They are strong, persistent, and fun loving women that gave modern country music a new look.
